Seven from two families killed after landslide in Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka

A landslide near Shirur village in Uttara Kannada district in southern India's state of Karnatakaon Tuesday (July 16) killed three individuals while four others are feared dead. The incident occurred on National Highway 66, according to officials.
Karnataka Revenue Minister Krishna Byre Gowda said that a total of seven people, including four members of a single family, are believed to have died in the landslide triggered by incessant rains.
A police officer told Press Trust of India that three bodies have been recovered so far, including those of 47-year-old Lakshman Naik and his 36-year-old wife Shanti Naik, who operated an eatery along the highway.
The search operations continue for the remaining victims, feared to be Roshan (11), Avantika (6), and Jagannath (55).

Witnesses cited by the Press Trust of India reported that a section of the hill collapsed onto the roadside eatery.
Local police, along with the National Disaster Response Force and other agencies, are conducting rescue operations despite ongoing rains.
The incident has led to the suspension of vehicular traffic on the affected road.
Following directives from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, district in-charge Minister Mankal S Vaidya rushed to the scene.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) was criticised for their construction methods on National Highway 66. The NHAI is accused of not taking care of construction norms during its construction tasks at an overly steep hill cut.
Senior police officers and Uttara Kannada District Deputy Commissioner Lakshmi Priya also visited the site. It is expected to take over 24 hours to clear the debris with ongoing rains hampering efforts, said officials.
In the wake of the tragedy, the Karnataka government has announced a compensation of ₹5 lakh for the next of kin of those killed in the landslide.
