Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) squared off against each other in match 5 of the IPL 2022 edition on Tuesday evening (March 30). Being asked to bat first, the Sanju Samson-led RR franchise posted a mammoth 210 for 6 in 20 overs. In reply, the RR bowlers restricted SRH to 149 for 7 as they romped past the 2016 winners courtesy an impressive 61-run win at the MCA Stadium, Pune.

From RR's perspective, the likes of Jos Buttler (35) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (20) got the franchise off to a good start before skipper Samson's 55, Devdutt Padikka's 41 and Shimron Hetmyer's 13-ball 32 propelled RR to a 200-plus total. Among their bowlers, Yuzvendra Chahal's three-fer and two wickets apiece from Trent Boult-Prasidh Krishna kept the SRH camp on the back foot from the word go.

It was a forgettable outing for SRH, who conceded plenty of no-balls, were hammered by the RR batters whereas the likes of skipper Kane Williamson, Nicholas Pooran, Rahul Tripathi, Abdul Samad, etc. all fell flat. Aiden Markram's 57*, Umran Malik (2 for 39), Washington Sundar's 14-ball 40 and Bhuvneshwar Kumar's economical spell were their only positives.

IPL 2022: SRH skipper Kane Williamson fined Rs 12 lakh for slow over-rate against RR

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) got off to the worst possible start in their run-chase against Rajasthan Royals (RR) in match number five of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Tuesday (March 29). SRH lost their skipper Kane Williamson cheaply on just 2 off 7 balls in the second over after a controversial decision from the third umpire.

After Rajasthan Royals posted a huge total of 210 runs on the board riding on brilliant knocks from their captain Sanju Samson (55), Devdutt Padikkal (41) and Shimron Hetmyer (31), SRH were looking to get off to a flyer in the run-chase. However, SRH were left reeling on 9/3 inside 4 overs in the Powerplay after losing three wickets in quick succession.

Indian pacer Prasidh Krishna drew the first blood for RR in the second over when he managed to get a nick off Williamson's bat which flew straight towards RR wicket-keeper Samson. Samson failed to pluck the catch as the ball slipped out of his gloves before being caught by Padikkal at slips.

However, the on-field umpires referred to the third umpire to review the catch and the replays clearly showed that the ball had touched the ground before going into Padiikkal's hands. But to everyone's shock, the third umpire gave the decision in the bowling team's favour as Williamson was asked to head back to the pavilion.

The third umpire's decision left many irked on social media as fans lashed out at the third umpire terming the decision a 'horrible' one. Check out some of the reactions -

'Horrible decision': 3rd umpire slammed after Kane Williamson's controversial dismissal against RR in IPL 2022

Kane Williamson-led Sunriers Hyderabad (SRH) will take on Rajasthan Royals (RR) in their opening game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Tuesday (March 29). The two sides will lock horns at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune and will be looking to get off to a winning start this season. Both Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad had failed to make it to the playoffs last year.

SRH endured a woeful campaign as they managed to win only three out of their 14 matches to finish at the bottom of the points table last year.
SRH have revamped their squad by roping in the likes of Nicholas Pooran, Marco Jansen, Washington Sundar and Rahul Tripathi among others. SRH have been one of the most consistent franchises in the IPL over the last few years and will be looking to make it to the playoffs once again this season.

On the other hand, Rajasthan Royals also parted ways with some of the big names like Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer among others but have managed to replace them with some brilliant signings. RR acquired Trent Boult, Yuzvendra Chahal, Devdutt Padikkal, Shimron Hetmyer and R Ashwin at the mega auction last month, who can all be game-changers for the Sanju Samson-led side.

IPL 2022: Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Rajasthan Royals - Head to head record, trivia, stats and squads

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will be looking to start afresh when they lock horns with Rajasthan Royals (RR) in their opening game of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Tuesday (March 29). Sunrisers Hyderabad had a disappointing campaign in IPL 2021 last year as they finished at the bottom of the table after managing only three wins in their 14 league matches.

SRH had sacked David Warner as their captain midway through their campaign in IPL 2021 before appointing Kane Williamson as their permanent skipper. Warner was released by the franchise along with ace spinner Rashid Khan as SRH retained only three players ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction last month. They retained Williamson along with two uncapped Indian talents - Umran Malik and Abdul Samad to build a squad from the scratch.

SRH spent big at the mega auction and roped in some big names like Nicholas Pooran, Marco Jansen, Aiden Markram and Romario Shepherd among others. They also bought back their pace duo of the experienced Bhuvneshwar Kumar and yorker specialist T Natarajan.

The one-time champions further bolstered their squad by also roping in the likes of Washington Sundar, Rahul Tripathi and Kartik Tyagi among others, who are all expected to play a key role for the franchise this season. While Tripathi is likely to open the batting with Williamson, Sundar will strengthen the middle-order.

SRH also paid big for uncapped Indian all-rounder Abhishek Sharma, who can be destructive with the bat on his day and can also be handy with the ball. He is one of the strong contenders to open the batting with skipper Williamson but SRH might opt for Tripathi to bat at the top with Sharma in the middle order. Pooran and Markram can take the no.3 and 4 spot respectively followed by Sharma and Samad as finishers.

Sundar in the lower-middle order will allow SRH to bat deep and have a solid depth in their bowling department. Romario Shepherd can be the other all-rounder in the side and a lot will depend on his form with the bat. New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson ruled out of South Africa series due to long-standing elbow injury

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson may miss the upcoming two-match Test series against South Africa at home, said a report by stuff.co.nz. Williamson has been out of action since the Kanpur Test against India in November 2021 as he continues his recovery from an elbow injury.

"While Kane Williamson is making useful progress in his rehabilitation from an elbow injury which has ruled him out of the last three tests for the Black Caps, the Test series against the Proteas starting in Christchurch on February 17 is likely to be regarded as too early to push him into top-flight action," said the report.

It is now expected that opener Tom Latham, who captained the team in Tests against Bangladesh, will continue in the role for the Tests against South Africa. The squad, which will be announced later in the week, will be the first time the Blackcaps will feature in Test cricket minus Williamson and a retired Ross Taylor since January 2008.

"But New Zealand Cricket would continue to take a cautious approach, wanting to slowly ease him along with his recovery to ensure there are no setbacks. It`s understood the two Tests may provide too taxing a workload for the 31-year-old at this stage and potentially risk his fitness for the rest of a busy year for the Black Caps, which includes a three-Test series away to England in June and the Twenty20 World Cup starting in Australia in October," further said the report.
Williamson has been troubled by elbow injury since early 2021, when he had to sit out of the three ODIs against Bangladesh in March. Later in June, Williamson again was ruled out of the Birmingham Test against England due to the elbow issue.

Williamson then captained New Zealand to winning the World Test Championship in Southampton and being runners-up in the Men`s T20 World Cup at the UAE in October-November.
But the elbow injury`s recurrence resulting in late pull-out before the second Test against India in Mumbai meant that Williamson, 31, is now giving full attention to recovering from the injury.

Joe Root

England may have lost the Ashes as Australia established an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-Test series, but Root has had a year to remember, scoring 1855 runs in 18 international matches at an average of 58.37 (six centuries).

Root, who has firmly established himself as the backbone of England's batting in Test cricket, has regularly been the lone man standing for the team. His year began with a 228-run knock against Sri Lanka in Galle, and only got better since then.

He backed up his achievements against Sri Lanka with a remarkable performance against India in Chennai, scoring a magnificent 218.

He maintained his form against India in the second leg of the Test series at home, accumulating 564 runs in four matches and three hundreds. His batting performance also helped him reach the top of the ICC Test Player Rankings, where he was later overtaken by Australia's Marnus Labuschagne.

Despite failing to convert his starts into large scores, Root was England's finest batsman in the first three Ashes Tests against Australia.

Root's biggest knock this year has been a 218 in the heat of Chennai against a top-tier Indian spin attack. In 377 deliveries, Root smashed 19 fours and two sixes, effectively neutralising the threat posed by Ravichandran Ashwin and company.

His effort helped England to a massive first innings total of 578, which helped them win the match by 227 runs.

Shaheen Afridi

Pakistan bowler Shaheen Afridi's 78 wickets in 36 internationals at an average of 22.20 and best bowling statistics of 6/51 have seen him dismiss some of the top batsmen in all three forms of the game. He was at his best in the T20 World Cup in the UAE, when he wowed the crowd with his speed and talent.

Kane Williamson

Kane Williamson's 693 runs in 16 internationals, along with his leadership, helped New Zealand win the ICC World Test Championship Final against India in Southampton. Williamson also contributed significantly with the bat in the game, scoring 49 runs in the opening innings. He followed it up with an unbeaten 52 in the 139-run chase, leading his team to lifting the mace.

Williamson also led the Kiwis to the T20 WC final, where they lost to Australia by 8 wickets.

Mohammad Rizwan

With 1,915 runs in 44 internationals and 56 dismissals, Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan dominated the roost this year in the shortest version of the game. Rizwan scored 1,326 runs in 29 matches at an average of 73.66 and a strike rate of 134.89. Apart from his achievements with the bat, he was as steady as ever behind the wickets, playing a major role in Pakistan's march to the T20 World Cup semi-finals.

On December 20, the Amazon Prime Video made another giant leap as it announced that it will start exclusively streaming cricket matches. The popular OTT platform have forged a partnership with the New Zealand Cricket and will live stream matches of the Black Caps starting January 2022.

In an exclusive interaction with www.wionnews.com's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo, spin-bowling all-rounder Mitchell Santner was thrilled to bits seeing the new alliance and said, "That's awesome. To see NZ cricket in another platform is outstanding. We have some diehard Indian fans who are keen to watch the Kiwis play Bangladesh at home, they can tune in early hours."

Further, Santner also opened up on India-NZ cricketing rivalry, which has been a talking point in the 22-yard cricket strip in recent times. With the NZC's matches now set to be live streamed on the OTT platform, the popularity of the Kiwis' line-up will be bolstered further. Hence, Santner spilled the beans on the Ind-NZ cricketing relations and said, "Yeah, it will only get better. We both fight pretty hard on the field but outside, everyone is pretty keen to sit down and have relaxing conversations (off the field). We are very lucky to play in the IPL and to share a change room with guys you have grown up watching is pretty cool. To play under MS Dhoni is been a massive one for me. To also bowl alongside Ravindra Jadeja is not a bad thing as well, being a left-arm spinner myself. "

Santner also recalled New Zealand's 2019 ODI World Cup final loss at the hands of England. While the contest was tied even in the Super Over, the Black Caps lost in terms of boundary count. Recalling how the Kiwis learned from their experience and used it to good effect to clinch the inaugural WTC finale, Santner said, "I think being there personally was very tough to swallow. you come so close....you can obviously look back at few different moments and can say 'this could have happened or that', but we channalised that (in the right way) and served as a motivation to be there and go one step further to beat India (in the WTC final).
Santner opened up on how NZ have become a dominant team across formats and have done exceedingly well in recent ICC tournaments. EXCLUSIVE | We fight hard on field but have relaxing conversations off it: Santner on India-NZ rivalry

After New Zealand had abandoned Pakistan tour right before the toss of the tour-opener was set to take place on September 17, there were severe criticism of the NZC. However, looks like bygones are now bygones as the New Zealand Cricket Board (NZC) and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have reached a conclusion as the Black Caps are set to tour Pakistan twice in late 2022-early 2023 and also return for more limited-overs fixtures in April 2023.

The official Twitter handle of the PCB shared the development with one and all on Monday (December 20) and wrote, "Brace yourselves! New Zealand to tour Pakistan for two Tests and three ODIs in December/January 2022-23 and will return in April 2023 for 10 white-ball matches. Exciting, right?"

Exciting, right?" 2 Tests, 8 ODIs, 5 T20Is: Babar Azam-led Pakistan to host Kane Williamson's New Zealand in 2022-23

The year 2021 was filled with plenty of cricketing action. The calendar year saw the inaugural ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final being held, where Kane Williamson-led New Zealand won the title. Apart from that, there were plenty of action and drama which came from the purest format, in the form of India-England Tests (both men's and women's), India vs Australia Tests (both in men's and women's), Pakistan-Bangladesh series, Sri Lanka-West Indies series, etc.

With the year coming to an end, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra picked his Test team of 2021. Chopra's team included some star-studded names and comprises four Indians. However, Captain Virat Kohli found no mention in his line-up.

For the unversed, Kohli didn't have a great year with the bat. While he led India with aplomb in the England series (both home and away) and a series win over New Zealand at home, he failed to cross the triple-figure mark and amassed only 483 runs, with four fifties, at 28.41. Hence, Chopra's list included Rohit Sharma (India's highest run-getter in 2021), Rishabh Pant, R Ashwin and Axar Patel.

Rohit compiled 906 runs, at 47.68, and is the second-highest run-getter overall. Ashwin leads the list of most wickets in Tests in the calendar year (52 scalps) whereas Axar accounted for 36 wickets (fourth overall). Pant, on the other hand, scored 706 runs with five fifties and one hundred (second-most by an Indian) and also showed vast improvement a a keeper. Both Pant and Ashwin have a chance to better their numbers in India's only Test remaining in 2021; i.e. the South Africa Test series opener in Centurion on December 26. Meanwhile, Rohit and Axar have been ruled out of action due to injury concerns.

Speaking about the top-order, Chopra's XI comprised Rohit, Sri Lanka captain Dimuth Karunaratne, Joe Root and NZ's skipper Williamson.

He said in a video on his YouTube channel, "The first name coming to my mind is Rohit Sharma. It was a huge year for him, it was the year in which he fell in love with the longest format. He has also made runs which also includes a double century. He was playing well against West Indies also. He might not be too pleasing on the eye but scores runs.".

"There was no contest at No.3. Joe Root is part of this team. He is the best Test batter of 2021, miles above the rest. He is just in a different league altogether. He gave amazing performances, whether it was the double century in India or Sri Lanka. At No.4, I have got Williamson. He scored a double century against Pakistan and he won his team the final. He played a very important knock in the final as well. Kane Williamson is also the captain of this team," Chopra further asserted.

For the middle-order, Chopra named Fawad Alam, Pant, Ashwin and Axar. "My team has Fawad Alam. It is a story of persistence, that he will keep on playing whether you select him or not. He has made runs, the noticeable performances being 109 against South Africa, 140 against Zimbabwe and 124 against West Indies. The keeper is Rishabh Pant. I was thinking about Jos Buttler as well but no one was close to him. The sort of performances Rishabh Pant has given - 101 against England, 89 at Gabba and a ninety in Sydney as well. He has been very very good."

"After that, I am picking two Indians (including Axar). Ravichandran Ashwin - he has taken a lot of wickets. He was brilliant in India against England. He made a century against England as well. He is the no.1 spinner in Test cricket, there is no doubt about it."

Updated World Test Championship points table after India vs New Zealand series

India and New Zealand faced each other in the two-match Test series opener at Green Park, Kanpur. The sporting track ensured that pacers, spinners as well as the batters had something to extract from the 22-yard cricket strip as the match lived upto expectations and resulted in a riveting draw.

Opting to bat first, Ajinkya Rahane-led Team India posted 345 all-out, riding on Shreyas Iyer's 105 and fifties from Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja. In reply, NZ made 296 whereas India set up a stiff 284-run target for the visitors, courtesy a vital 49-run first-innings lead.
Match prediction: The red soil at the Wankhede Stadium is expected to aid the spinners as the match would go on. Spin is sure to play a huge role in the second and final Test. Batters are expected to cherish the surface after settling in but batting won't remain easy during the last few days of the contest.

While it is always tough to make a prediction against the Kiwis in the longest format, India will still start as favourites as they came close to a win in the first Test. Their superior record at the venue, winning 11 and losing seven, will keep them in good stead.

Kane Williamson, two uncapped Indian players retained by SRH, PBKS let go off KL Rahul

David Warner joined the Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise in 2014. Soon, he became a regular in the line-up and led the side to their solitary title in the 2016 edition. Warner remained the face of the franchise ever since but an ordinary season in the IPL 2021 edition, where he also had some issues with the team management, took things downhill and the swashbuckling left-hander hasn't been retained by the SRH franchise.

All the eight existing IPL franchises shared their list of retained players on Tuesday evening (November 30). SRH have retained only three players, such as captain Kane Williamson, Abdul Samad and pacer Umran Malik. Hence, along with Warner, the Hyderabad franchise also released the likes of Rashid Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jonny Bairstow.

India and New Zealand locked horns with each other in the series opener of the two-match Test series at Green Park, Kanpur. The match had plenty of action and drama as the sporting pitch ensured that pacers, spinners as well as batters had something to extract from the 22-yard cricket strip.

Opting to bat first, Ajinkya Rahane-led Team India rode on Shreyas Iyer's 105 and fifties from Ravindra Jadeja and Shubman Gill to post 345 all-out. In reply, NZ were all-out for 296 after half-centuries from Tom Latham and Will Young. Rahane & Co. then declared their second innings at 234-7, courtesy fifties from Iyer and Wriddhiman Saha, as the Kiwis were given a stiff 284-run target. They went to stumps on Day 4 needing 280 more to win whereas India were nine wickets away from going 1-0 up.

Day 5 commenced with the Kiwis going to the lunch break without losing a wicket. However, India initiated their collapse as Black Caps went from 79/1 to 155/9. Nonetheless, Indian bowlers couldn't get rid of the last-wicket pair for the visitors as the match ended with Williamson & Co. 165/9.

India should have bowled them out: Former Pak captain disappointed as India fail to win Kanpur Test vs NZ

India and New Zealand played out a humdinger of a first Test at Green Park, Kanpur. The series opener ended in a riveting draw with Kane Williamson-led New Zealand being 165/9 in pursuit of 284 set by Ajinkya Rahane-led India. When the fifth and final day commenced, all three results were possible as Kiwis needed another 280 runs whereas the home side were in search of nine more wickets.

While New Zealand played out the morning session without losing a single wicket, they surrendered the momentum from thereon. From 79 for 1, NZ were reduced to 155-9 before debutant Rachin Ravindra (18 not out off 91 balls) and Ajaz Patel survived 52 deliveries, for the final wicket, to ensure a draw.

The second and final Test will now begin on December 3, at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, where regular captain Virat Kohli will walk into the playing XI after being rested for the series opener. While India may tweak their bowling combination, mainly replacing Ishant Sharma with another pacer, they are likely to go ahead with five bowlers. Hence, the axe will fall on one of their batters.

Among them, Mayank Agarwal and Ajinkya Rahane had an ordinary run in the Kanpur Test. While Cheteshwar Pujara also couldn't do much, he played a lot of deliveries in the first essay and is likely to hold onto his spot. Thus, former Indian all-rounder Madan Lal recently named the player who should be dropped for the Mumbai Test.

"I don't think so," said Lal on Sports Tak when asked if Rahane will be part of the playing XI for the final Test. "Shreyas Iyer scored valuable runs in both innings, and then Pujara is a batter who has scored runs. He may have not scored big hundreds but Pujara has stayed at the wicket and scored runs. The same cannot be said about Rahane though. So I feel that if you are to make a change, there is only one person whose place Virat can take, which is Ajinkya Rahane," he pointed out.

Shane Warne left baffled, points out India's 'strange tactic' during Day 5 of drawn Kanpur Test

India and New Zealand produced a thrilling end to the first Test at Green Park, Kanpur on Monday (November 29). At the start of the day's play, all three results were on the cards as hosts Ajinkya Rahane-led India needed 9 wickets whereas the Black Caps required 280 more for a win (being 4 for 1).

While New Zealand started the day's play on a bang, going into the lunch session without losing a wicket at 79/1, before Umesh Yadav's strike in the second session led to the Kiwis' collapse. From 79 for 1, the NZ batting line-up slipped to 155 for 9 before the last-wicket stand, between debutant Rachin Ravindra and Ajaz Patel, bailed the Kiwis out of a crisis as they survived 52 balls to ensure a riveting draw.

Thus, world cricket had a close eye on the series opener between India and New Zealand, due to the topsy-turvy contest witnessed at Kanpur. As the pitch had everything for pacers, spinners and batters, the contest went down the wire with plenty of drama and action in the last half hour. Hence, many tweeted regarding the proceedings in Kanpur.

Glenn Maxwell, Australia's limited-overs all-rounder, also tweeted on the IND-NZ Test match. He wrote, "Anyone else watching INDvNZ. How good's Test cricket?" His tweet went viral in no time as the all-rounder also got a reply from Aussie great Shane Warne (who agreed with him and stated how keenly he is awaiting the start of Ashes 2021).

None like The Wall! Rahul Dravid donates generously to groundstaff for sporting track in Kanpur Test

India and New Zealand were involved in a thrilling first Test at Green Park Stadium, Kanpur. Electing to bat first, Ajinkya Rahane-led India posted 345 all-out whereas New Zealand were bundled out for 296 in their first essay. In their second innings, India declared at 234-7, giving the Kiwis a stiff 284-run target. Riding on Tom Latham's 52 and Rachin Ravindra's 18 not out, off 91 balls, the visitors ensured a draw in the last half hour of Day Five.

Ahead of the second and final Test, at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, India have some selection issues to address. With regular captain Virat Kohli set to return for the series finale, on December 3, the Rahul Dravid-led think tank will have to drop a batter from the top or the middle-order. In this regard, former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer has suggested an 'out-of-the-box' name who can accompany Shubman Gill at the order, if Mayank Agarwal is dropped.

“It’s a toss-up between Mayank Agarwal and Ajinkya Rahane. I would think on those two. That’s the toss-up that Virat Kohli has to make. Whether he wants to go with Mayank Agarwal and give him another go or whether [he thinks] Ajinkya Rahane hasn’t got enough runs in the last 10-12 Test matches after that Melbourne Test so he goes out. It’s a tough call, definitely a tough call. It depends on whom the sword falls on,” said Wasim Jaffer in a chat with ESPNCricinfo.

“I think I will open with Saha if at all Mayank Agarwal goes out because then everybody bats out of their position. Pujara will open and then Ajinkya Rahane will bat at some other position… If Saha opens then everyone bats at the same position. And you can do that in Indian conditions with Saha. Is it a long-term call? Definitely not because India will go to South Africa. So, they’ll have to reconsider their top-six for Mumbai,” concluded the meme-specialist.

Given that spinners have been the go-to-bowlers, India is likely to retain R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel. On the other hand, they are most likely to again go ahead with two pacers, hence, the axe will fall on one of the batters. Given that Mayank returned with scores of 13 and 17 in the series opener, the right-hander might lose his spot whereas Saha can be an interesting choice as a makeshift opener.
