After their latest song ‘Dynamite’ became a global hit post its launch in August, in a recent interview to NDTV, BTS members said, First of all, thank you for the love and support, even though we haven’t been there. It’s crazy these days. I think we can’t say just one thing. BTS to fans in India: We want to be there, say namaste, sing and dance together

Big Hit Entertainment, the management label of popular South Korean boy band BTS, debuted at double its initial public offering (IPO) price on Thursday, as investors scrambled for a piece of the country`s largest listing in three years.

Big Hit shares opened at 270,000 won, valuing the company at about 9.6 trillion won (6.4 billion pounds), compared with an IPO price of 135,000 won per share last month.

The stock rose as much as 30% in early trade to 351,000 won, compared with a 0.3% fall on the benchmark KOSPI. That puts the company on track to join the all-time top 10 debuts on the South Korean stock market, based on first-day closing prices.

South Korean retail investors earlier this month laid out 58.4 trillion won in orders for Big Hit shares, falling just short of a record 58.55 trillion won for the retail portion of Kakao Games` listing in September.

Big Hit relies heavily on BTS, with the Billboard-topping group accounting for 87.7% of the label`s revenue in the first half of 2020, according to a regulatory filing.

The seven-member boy band has a huge global fan base, which the label has promoted effectively through social platforms and online performances since in-person performances were cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Analysts say the company has proved itself extremely online savvy, using Youtube and social media for market infiltration. It also has an unprecedented level of control over its revenue streams via its Weverse fandom platform that distributes BTS content and sells merchandise, which has the potential to draw in other artists.

"Big Hit has a different business model than the other big three K-Pop labels, JYP, SM and YG," said Nam Hyo-ji, analyst at KTB Investment & Securities. "Although not completely free from the effect of COVID-19, it`s freer than other labels."
BTS earned a Guinness World Records title for most viewers for a livestreamed performance after its first paid online concert in June drew nearly 757,000 from 107 countries.

The listing ceremony at the Korea Exchange (KRX), attended by Big Hit founder and co-CEO Bang Si-hyuk, was broadcast live on the label`s Youtube channel. The listing makes the BTS members multimillionaires, with each granted shares worth as much as 24 billion won according to early trade.

Members of hugely popular South Korean K-Pop band BTS are expected to become multimillionaire shareholders after receiving shares in their label, Big Hit Entertainment, as it prepares an initial public offering (IPO) that could raise up to 962.6 billion won ($811 million).

This week, BTS scored Korea`s first-ever no 1 spot on the main US Billboard music chart with breezy disco hit 'Dynamite'. Their first all-English language single hit the spot for mainstream U.S. pop fans, with a Youtube video garnering more than 284 million views already.

Big Hit CEO and largest shareholder Bang Si-hyuk last month gave 478,695 common shares to the seven BTS members, or 68,385 per each, "to strengthen long-term partnership with major artists and boost morale", Big Hit said in a regulatory filing on Wednesday.

Each BTS member would get 9.23 billion won of shares, or 64.6 billion won altogether, if the IPO is priced at the top of its range in October.

The stock gift may be interpreted as an attempt to bind the BTS members and the label more closely together, said Kim Hyun-yong, analyst at eBEST Investment & Securities.

Big Hit plans to offer about 7.1 million shares at an indicative price range of 105,000-135,000 won per share.
The pricing potentially values the company at up to 4.8 trillion won ($4.04 billion), considering convertible preferred stocks plus common shares, analysts said.

"The stock could perform well upon listing, as there`s a lot of liquidity in the market now... Then it depends on Big Hit`s results, but the lack of physical concerts due to COVID-19 will likely have negative impact," said Nam Hyo-ji, analyst at KTB Investment and Securities.

Big Hit relies heavily on BTS, with some 87.7% and 97.4% of its revenue in the first half of 2020 and 2019 respectively coming from the group, the filing said.

With BTS members expected to enter mandatory military service for South Korean men in coming years, the label has worked to address market concerns that it needs to diversify its revenue streams.

"There is the military issue, but if there is no legal exemption, Big Hit is expected to either set up units with the remaining members or pursue solo acts while they serve in the military," said Kim Hyun-yong.

Popular K-pop group BTS is known for its Korean hits. The band though are stepping out of their comfort zone to release a new single in English for their fans, who like to call themselves ARMY.

The popular boy band shared the news on V LIVE, a Korean live stream broadcasting app, saying that they "wanted to share some positive energy" amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The song will get a digital release in August, the band revealed.

"We have prepared a new single for ARMY, set for August 21. We are preparing an album for the second half of this year, but decided to first release a single because we wanted to reach our fans as soon as possible.

"Due to COVID-19, people around the world have been going through tough times and we wanted to share some positive energy with our fans," the group said in the statement.

The seven-piece boy band comprising of Jin, Jungkook, RM, Suga, J-Hope, V and Jimin, is also planning to release a new album later this year.

This is not the first time that BTS has sung an English song. The musicians have previously released English-language songs 'MIC Drop' and 'Waste It On Me,' with Steve Aoki. Yet the band has stated that the recording in their non-native tongue was 'a new challenge'.

"We thought that the song sounded perfect as it is in English. We recorded the guide version and felt that the result was something totally new and fresh. We also needed a breakthrough during these unforeseen times. This is a new challenge for us as well," they added.

The news comes days after it was announced that BTS would be among the artists performing for the 2020 iHeartRadio Music Fest, which is set to air September 27.

In a strong statement of support for the Black Lives Matter movement that is trending worldwide, Korean pop band BTS made a progressive move by calling out racism.

BTS took to their Twitter profile as they shared a statement of solidarity with the Black community. Written both in Korean and English, they said, "We stand against racial discrimination. We condemn violence. You, I and we all have the right to be respected. We will stand together. #BlackLivesMatter."

It is one of the rarest times when BTS has taken a political stand. They generally steer away from making such statements and maintain a clean image.

BTS is extremely popular around the world, having generated chartbusting music that has broken records.

Soon after the post went out, the ARMY staggered in support of the stance. They, in fact, flooded the toxic hashtags with memes and other content to drown out the hateful messaging and started trending #WhiteLivesMatter, #BlueLivesMatter and #MAGA.

BTS took to their Twitter profile as they shared a statement of solidarity with the Black community. Written both in Korean and English, they said, "We stand against racial discrimination. We condemn violence. You, I and we all have the right to be respected. We will stand together. #BlackLivesMatter." It is one of the rarest times when BTS has taken a political stand.

The manager of South Korea`s popular boyband BTS has issued an apology on behalf of one of its members who went to a bar in April flouting the government's advice of stepping out due to the outbreak of coronavirus.

The country is trying to contain a recent coronavirus outbreak around Seoul`s club scene.

Jungkook, the BTS` main vocalist, visited a restaurant and a bar in the Itaewon neighbourhood with friends on April 25, the boyband`s management Big Hit Entertainment said on Monday.

A new cluster of virus cases emerged in that neighbourhood this month as social distancing measures eased on May 6, prompting authorities to delay school reopening and close bars and clubs again.

"We have no excuse that we placed the artist`s personal life before we were able to emphasize the importance of social distancing. We bow our head in apology," the company said.

The 22-year old, who was there before the first case among Itaewon clubgoers was confirmed, is not showing any symptoms and has tested negative for the coronavirus.

"He is also deeply regretting on how he did not follow social distancing measures seriously."

South Korea has been lauded for its quick and effective response to the pandemic but the resurgence of cases has raised concerns about the second wave of infections.

Before the rules were eased on May 6, authorities had allowed clubs and bars to stay open as long as they complied with strict social distancing measures, while advising people not to visit them.

Local media reported three other boy band members were with Jungkook during that outing, including Cha Eun-woo of Astro, Mingyu of Seventeen and Jaehyun of NCT.

The managers of all three issued statements confirming they were in Itaewon on the same day as Jungkook, apologising for their failure to follow social distancing measures. Jaehyun posted a handwritten apology on social media.

It’s April Fool’s Day and K-pop singer Kim Jae-joong thought to use this day to play a prank on his fans but it didn’t go as planned. Taking to social media, Kim Jae-joong announced on Instagram that he had contracted the novel coronavirus and then revealed after an hour that he was just joking.

But the ARMY was not in a mood to laugh.

Kim, a former member of the boy band boy band TVXQ as well as the trio JYJ, first announced in Korean today, “I’ve been infected with Covid-19. This was all due to my carelessness, for ignoring the advice provided by the government and all those around me. It’s a wonder how significantly one person’s actions can affect the greater society. I am apologetic toward those who may have also been inflicted with the virus because of me … I am being hospitalised.”

In another post an hour later, Kim revealed the announcement was an April Fool’s prank -- that he intended to make fans aware of the dangers of the pandemic. He then said, “To have someone you love or someone precious to you be infected with a virus is a heartbreaking thing. Despite that fact, there are so many people who are still roaming the streets, acting as if it won’t ever happen to them. Many of my acquaintances and staff are also seeing their loved ones testing positive for the virus … Although this prank went quite far for a simple April Fool’s joke, many people still became worried about me in a short period.”

He added, “This is definitely not something that only happens to other people. I wanted to tell everyone that protecting yourself is also the solution to protecting others. I will receive all punishment that I am due for this post. I hope you will all stay healthy.”

But now the posts have been deleted from his Instagram page.

One fan wrote, “Why are you posting a false statement such as this? I hope you are punished. I regret even listening to your music as a child.”

“Did you ever wonder how many others would be hurt by this rash post?” another commented. “I am really disappointed.”

The world is a global village.

As most people quarantine in their homes amid the coronavirus outbreak, all celebrities are coming up with some way to entertain themselves and their fans.

In an interesting new addition, Korean Pop band BTS have now launched a new web series so as to teach their fans Korean so that their music can be understood by all including the lyrics. What a time to do that right, considering we all have so much time in our hands?

BTS were formed in Seoul in 2010 and have since gone on to break all music records, becoming the first Korean band to enter mainstream music industries of the world. As their popularity rises, BTS are now hosting 30 lessons on the social media app Weverse from March 24.

The episodes are "designed to make it easy and fun for global fans who have difficulty enjoying BTS' music and contents due to the language barrier," said their record label in a statement.

While most would think that they designed these lessons during quarantine, the label said that they had it planned way before. The idea came about after the band's passionate fanbase called for English subtitles to be added to their videos.

"There are only limited ways our fans could learn Korean with ease. Big Hit has created Korean learning media using artist content for a more rewarding and immersive experience for our fans," said Big Hit's founder, Bang Si-Hyuk.

Each of the three-minute episodes will focus on simple Korean grammar and expressions, with the lesson plan developed by Professor Heo Yong of the Department of Korean Education at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies; and researchers at the Korean Language Content Institute.

K-pop sensation BTS' label picks JPMorgan, others for IPO - media

The young stars in South Korean boy band BTS said on Monday the theme of their new album dealt with how they overcame doubts and fears encountered since they burst on the K-Pop scene seven years ago.

Having performed at the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles last month, BTS stands at the forefront of South Korean pop music and has helped gather an international audience for the genre.

On Friday, the band released "Map of the Soul: 7", its fourth album. The 20 tracks include collaborations with Sia and Troye Sivan.
Plans for a large media event in Seoul for the album were ditched due to the coronavirus health scare in South Korea, but the band instead livestreamed a news conference based on preregistered questions.

"Sometimes we were uncertain, sometimes we were lost. Every time that happened, the shadows and fear inside us grew," rapper Suga told the news conference aired via YouTube.

"But it`s been seven years. I think we have grounded ourselves now, and we learned how to do that, the difficulties and wounds we face and fight them."

Though several young K-Pop stars have struggled with cyber bullying and depression, Suga did not elaborate on what difficulties BTS faced.

But the group, whose seven members are in their Twenties, took an unexpectedly long vacation last year to "recharge".

When asked about the comment by Bong Joon-ho, director of the Oscar-winning "Parasite", who recently said BTS was 3,000 times more influential than him, Suga said he was an avid fan of Bong`s work and hoped more South Korean artists would be introduced to the world.

Leader and rapper RM likened K-pop to a "giftbox" integrating music, dance, video and interaction with fans, saying the personal elements the band infuses in its music might have boosted its global popularity.

"We try to instil personal stories in our music and dance and I think the concerns and feelings that we have resonate with people around the world," he said.

But making music is a "constant battle to show your weakness and fight the fear of expressing your fear," he added.

"Sometimes we were uncertain, sometimes we were lost. Every time that happened, the shadows and fear inside us grew," rapper Suga told the news conference aired via YouTube. "But it`s been seven years. I think we have grounded ourselves now, and we learned how to do that, the difficulties and wounds we face and fight them." Though several young K-Pop stars have struggled with cyber bullying and depression, Suga did not elaborate on what difficulties BTS faced. BTS broke into the US market in 2017 and was the first Korean group to win a Billboard music award. It is set to launch a new world tour in April, kicking off in Seoul.

It’s never a dull day in the lives of Korean pop stars. In a follow up to Korean pop star having been charged with South Korea’s anti-prostitution law, he now may have to join the country’s army and face trial in a military court.

Former Big Bang member Seungri whose real name is Lee Seung-hyun, was indicted on charges of violating laws on prostitution, illegal gambling and foreign currency trading.

On Tuesday, the state-run Military Manpower Administration announced that it has sent Seungri documents asking him to report for 21 months of mandatory military service, a requirement for all able-bodied men in South Korea because prosecutors had ended their investigation of him.

In a statement, the Military Manpower Administration said that it was concerned a protracted trial in civilian courts would hamper its effort to equally apply the military obligation on Seungri, 29.

It said Seungri’s case will be handed over to a military court if he joins the military.

For those unversed, in South Korea, men eligible for military service are allowed to delay their conscription five times under certain conditions before they become 3. This delayed time can, however, not exceed two years.
