After a tough year for Korean pop stars with news of suicide and more, there's finally something that you can be happy about.

According to a new announcement, South Korean boy group EXO member Chen has something sweet up his sleeve. He will soon be getting married to his girlfriend who is not from the world of fame as they expect their first child together.

Chen, whose real name is Kim Jongdae made the happy announcement via a handwritten letter to EXO's fancafe. He wrote in the letter that he has a ‘girlfriend’ with whom he would like to be with “the rest of [his] life”.

Chen wrote that he has discussed his decision with his management company SM Entertainment and his fellow EXO members before choosing to share the news publicly.

Soon after his public announcement came, SM Entertainment also released a statement confirming that Chen will be marrying his girlfriend in a private ceremony.

EXO fans, known as EXO-Ls, have come out in support of their idol. This comes as a major surprise because on earlier occasions, fans have criticised the pop industry stars for marrying or choosing to date publicly.

Read his statement here:

"Hello, this is Chen.

I am writing this because I have something to tell our fans. I don’t know how to start this, and I’m very nervous. Although these words are not enough, I’m writing this letter because I want to honestly tell our fans, who gave us so much love, first.

I have a girlfriend I want to spend the rest of my life with. I was worried and concerned about the situations that would arise as a result of this decision, but I had been discussing with the agency and our members because I wanted to announce the news at least a little bit earlier so I wouldn’t surprise you with the sudden news.

Then, a blessing came my way. I am also taken aback, as I cannot do what I had planned with the agency and members, but this blessing has given me more strength. I couldn’t lose any more time thinking about when or how I should announce this, so I mustered up my courage.

I’m really thankful for my members for genuinely congratulating me after hearing this news, and I deeply thank our fans for sending me so much undeserving love. I will never forget this feeling of gratitude, do my best in my place without changing, and return the love you have given me. Thank you always.”

On another note, Korean pop has been mired with controversies after several music stars committed suicide last year citing mental health issues and cyber trolling. Sulli, Goo Hara committed suicide last year as sex scandals also rocked the country's music world. Also see: Controversy, lies and videotape: K-pop world rocked by scandals

Singer in K-pop boyband BTS investigated after car crash 'error'

Sulli, a former South Korean singer-actress, was a rare taboo breaker in a world where K-pop stars` every move is strictly monitored by their management, but her death has exposed the dark side of the industry that propelled a global craze.

She unveiled her romantic relationship at the height of her career as a member of top girl group f(x) and was vocal about not wearing a bra, defying both the K-pop world`s careful brand management and conservative social attitudes towards young women - and provoking a stream of online comment. Also see: After Sulli, now online haters turn to K-pop star's ex boyfriend

Before her death on Monday aged 25, Sulli, whose real name was Choi Jin-ri and who police said was suffering from severe depression, spoke out strongly against cyber bullying.

Colleagues and experts said her death revealed the constant barrage of malicious online comments faced by young female artists in the public eye.

"She wasn`t just an issue-maker but I hope she will be remembered as a women`s rights activist who was free-spirited, who could truly speak her mind," said Kwon Ji-an, a fellow South Korean singer and painter.

Sulli`s most recent public appearance had been in a television programme in which K-pop stars spoke about their experiences with malevolent online postings.

Kwon, 35, better known by her stage name Solbi, was also subjected to cyber insults in 2009, when she was a member of K-pop group Typhoon, after being wrongly identified in a sex video that went viral online.

The incident triggered intense depression, social phobia and panic disorder, Kwon said.

She sought therapy and learned painting, which was meant to be a way of "survival" but eventually became another career.
"I was too young and socially immature to digest all the glamour and changes in the environment, and there`s no self-medication whatsoever," Kwon said.

"Then how do you respond to all of those vicious online comments? If you explain, they`ll dismiss it as an excuse, and if you fight, they`ll dislike you even more."

LAW CHANGE CAMPAIGN

Kwon called for a change in the anonymous comment culture on the Internet, which critics has long blamed for cyber bullying.
In South Korea, local web portals such as Naver and Daum are a major channel of news consumption, which allow users to leave comments without revealing their real names.

In the wake of Sulli`s death, fans flocked to the website of the presidential Blue House to file a petition urging the adoption of a real-name online comment system. A spate of related bills have for years been pending in parliament amid heated debate.

A poll by survey firm Realmeter released on Wednesday showed nearly 70% of South Koreans supported the scheme, while 24% opposed.

"The freedom of expression is a vital value in democratic society, but insulting and hurting someone else`s dignity is beyond that limit," said Lee Dong-gwi, a psychology professor at Yonsei University in Seoul. "There need to be far harsher penalties for those who violate that law."

The number of cases of cyber defamation or insult has almost doubled from 2014-18, police data shows.

An association of South Korean entertainment management companies issued a statement on Wednesday vowing to pursue sterner legal action for "verbal violence" online.

Kwon has now found peace thanks, in part, to painting. When she released a new single album in 2017, she even sought to express her sufferings by dousing herself with black paint on the stage like a performance artist.
Also see: After Sulli, now online haters turn to K-pop star's ex boyfriend Before her death on Monday aged 25, Sulli, whose real name was Choi Jin-ri and who police said was suffering from severe depression, spoke out strongly against cyber bullying. If you explain, they`ll dismiss it as an excuse, and if you fight, they`ll dislike you even more." LAW CHANGE CAMPAIGN Kwon called for a change in the anonymous comment culture on the Internet, which critics has long blamed for cyber bullying. "There need to be far harsher penalties for those who violate that law." The number of cases of cyber defamation or insult has almost doubled from 2014-18, police data shows. "I`d gotten treatment out of desperation that I really wanted to live," Kwon said. "I don`t get hurt any more even though I see those malevolent online comments, but now is time to discuss it as a serious social issue."

South Korean pop star Seungri arrived at court Tuesday to await a decision on whether he should be arrested over charges including prostitution in a snowballing sex scandal.

South Korean pop star Seungri arrived at court Tuesday to await a decision on whether he should be arrested over charges including prostitution in a snowballing sex scandal. The 28-year-old singer from popular boy band BIGBANG and his business partner are accused of arranging sex services for potential investors and rich clients at a nightclub owned by the pair. Dressed in a sharp black suit, Seungri -- real name Lee Seung-hyun -- quickly walked past a mob of reporters at the Seoul Central District Court, tight-lipped as he brushed off questions. Police investigations have shown that Seungri and his partner procured a dozen prostitutes for a group of Japanese investors in 2015 at their upmarket Burning Sun nightclub, according to Yonhap news agency. In Pictures: Controversy, lies and videotape: K-pop world rocked by scandals The pair also allegedly embezzled around 530 million won (US$450,000) from the business and face charges of violating sanitary codes at Burning Sun, where drug peddling was allegedly commonplace and women are said to have been regularly raped. Seungri -- who announced his retirement from showbusiness in March as the scandal ballooned -- has denied the charges. Other stars have been embroiled in the allegations, which have cast a shadow over the K-pop industry after investigations into Seungri revealed an online chatroom where a handful of male celebrities shared illegally filmed sex videos. Two other figures have announced their retirements from the entertainment industry amid an ongoing probe.

South Korean court to rule on K-pop star Seungri's arrest

Yuuka Hasumi put high school in Japan on hold and flew to South Korea in February to try her chances at becoming a K-pop star, even if that means long hours of vocal and dance training, no privacy, no boyfriend, and even no phone.

Hasumi, 17, joined Acopia School in Seoul, a prep school offering young Japanese a shot at K-pop stardom, teaching them the dance moves, the songs and also the language.

She is one of an estimated one million other K-pop star wannabes, from South Korea and abroad, hoping to get a shot at super competitive auditions by major talent agencies that will take on just a select few as "trainees".

"It is tough," Hasumi said in Japanese, drenched in sweat from a dance lesson she attended with 15-year-old friend Yuho Wakamatsu, also from Japan.
"Going through a strict training and taking my skill to a higher level to a perfect stage, I think that`s when it is good to make a debut," she said.

Hasumi is one of 500 or so young Japanese who join Acopia each year, paying up to $3,000 a month for training and board.

The school also fixes auditions for its candidates with talent management companies that have been the driving force behind the "Korean-wave" pop culture that exploded onto the world stage in the past decade with acts such as global chart topping boy band BTS.

The influx of Japanese talent that is reshaping the K-pop industry comes at a time of increasingly bitter political acrimony between the two countries that has damaged diplomatic ties.

That the tension has done little to dent the K-pop craze among Japanese youth, and the willingness by Korean agencies to take on Japanese talent, speak to the strength of the ties between their people, according to one long-time observer.

"They`re nuts about BTS over there in Japan," said Lee Soo-chul, board member of Seoul-Tokyo Forum, a private foundation with members of diplomats and business executives from both countries.

K-pop groups, and veteran Korean musicians, are selling out concert halls throughout Japan, said Lee, a former head of Samsung Group`s Japanese operations. "There is no Korea-Japan animosity there."

DEEP FREEZE
Tensions rooted in Japan`s 1910-1945 colonisation of Korea have risen after South Korean court rulings against Japanese firms for forced labour, and amid a perception in Korea that Japan`s leadership has not adequately atoned for its colonial past.

But the popularity of Korean culture and K-pop music is on the rise in Japan, with many fans and artists saying they are not bothered by the diplomatic tension.

“I might get criticized for being Japanese, but I want to stand on a stage and make (South Koreans) know Japanese can be this cool,” said Rikuya Kawasaki, a 16-year-old Japanese K-pop star hopeful who auditioned unsuccessfully in Tokyo for Acopia School.

For schools and agencies, Japan`s music market - the second largest after the United States and bigger than China - is a big prize and many have been on a campaign to recruit Japanese talent.

"It will be good if Japan and South Korea will get along through music," Hasumi told Reuters during a break from her Korean language class.
Some Japanese transplants have already made it big. The three Japanese members of the girl band Twice helped make the group the second most popular act in Japan, after BTS.

Their success has prompted JYP Entertainment, the South Korean agency backing Twice, to plan the launch of an idol group comprising only Japanese girls.

JYP declined to comment for this story.

Agency officials are reluctant to discuss their success in Japan and the infusion of Japanese talent, wary of fuelling a politically charged backlash, industry sources said.

HARD ROAD TO STARDOM
There`s no shortage of Japanese hopefuls willing to train under talent agencies` watchful eye, some having left successful careers back home in search of K-pop fame.

"I’ve heard stories about no free time or not being able to do what I want. But, I think all of K-pop stars who are now performing have gone down the same road," said Nao Niitsu, a 19-year-old college freshman from Tokyo.

During a visit to Seoul paid for by her mother, herself a die-hard BTS fan, Niitsu auditioned for 10 agencies and was accepted by five.

Debut is elusive, unlike in Japan where it is easier for idols to get a start and then can hone their skills and work on their appeal with the fans.

Miyu Takeuchi said it wasn`t a difficult decision to leave a 10-year career with a top idol band AKB48 back home in Japan to sign with the K-pop agency Mystic Entertainment in March as a trainee.

Even with her experience, she has seven hours of vocal training a day and two-hour dance lessons twice a week, plus early morning Korean lessons.
She is not allowed to have a boyfriend but she says she has no regrets, despite the fact there is no guarantee she will make it.

"I don`t know how long my training period will be, but it has to reach a point where my coaches and management company say `Miyu, you are a professional!`"

K-Pop stardom lures Japanese youth to Korea despite diplomatic chill

The way to an Indian's heart is clearly through some good old fashioned Bollywood music. Popular K-Pop group IN2IT are touring in India along with guest star AleXa. A part of their IN2ITxION tour, the band's first show was in Mumbai on 15th April.

K-pop has a considerable amount of fan following in India and the Mumbai event was naturally packed as fans of the band came to sing along with their favourite K-pop artists. But the surprise of the night came when the band along with AleXa performed to hit number 'Bole Chudiyan' from the film 'Kabhi Khushi Kahbie Gham'.

AleXa, dressed in a lehenga-choli opened the song while band members of IN2IT joined in later and copied Hrithik Roshan's steps from the original song to the hilt. Needless to say the crowd went berserk in excitement. Here, watch the video.
