<p>In a sharp dig at China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) debt trap, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that "connectivity initiatives should always respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries." The Indian foreign minister made these remarks&nbsp;at the SCO Head of Government meeting in Kyrgyzstan on Wednesday (Oct 26).</p>

<p>EAM Jaishankar said, "India is keen to partner with Member States for sustainable, mutually beneficial and financially viable solutions. As we strive to improve trade within the region, we need robust connectivity and infrastructure. India has accorded utmost priority to these domains in its own developmental journey, at the same time connectivity initiatives should always respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries."</p>

<p>Jaishankar said, "We should bear in mind that the Global South should not be saddled with unviable debt arising from opaque initiatives. I am confident that the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor and the International North–South Transport Corridor could become enablers in bringing economic prosperity to the region."</p>

<p>"The ripple impact of what is taking place right now in the Middle East is still not entirely clear... In different regions, there are smaller happenings whose impact is not inconsequential... There is also the less formal version that is very pervasive, terrorism which has long been honed and practised as a tool of statecraft... Any expectation that conflicts and terrorism can be contained in their impact is no longer tenable. A big part of this is clearly economic, but do not underestimate the danger of metastasis when it comes to radicalism and extremism. No danger is too distant anymore," Jaishankar reportedly said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>EAM Dr S Jaishankar said, "The unipolar world is a distant history. The bipolar world was even more distant in the bipolarity of the US-Soviet Union. And I don't think US China will really end up bipolar. I think there are too many, as I said, too many next-run powers with sufficient clout and autonomous activity and regions of their own dominance and privacy..."</p>

And I think you can see that happening in Africa as well," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jaishankar's address was not limited to discussing global challenges as he also spoke of the progress made over the years and the continuous emergence of new issues.</p>

<p>According to the state-run Vietnam News Agency (VNA), both sides reaffirmed the importance of maintaining peace, stability, security, safety, and freedom of navigation and aviation, and compliance with international law in the East Sea, resolving disputes based on international law, especially the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), in a veiled reference to China.</p>

<p>Jaishankar made these remarks at the 'Celebrating Colours of Friendship' event organised by the Embassy of India in Washington on Saturday, which was attended by several hundred Indian-Americans.</p>

<p>“There is one clear message today that our relationship is at an all-time high. But as they say in America, you ain't seen anything yet. So, we are going to take this relationship to a different level, to a different place,” he said at the India House.</p>

<h2><strong>'US played key role in success of G20'</strong></h2>

<p>Jaishankar also credited the success of the G20 Summit in New Delhi to the US.</p>

<p>“As the host, when things go well, the host always gets the credit. It's reasonable. But, the G20 could not have come together if all the members of the G20 did not work for its success," he said</p>

<p>"I think particularly, I must say, because I'm in this country today, the contribution, the support and the understanding that we got from the United States to make a successful G20, I think that is something I would certainly like to recognise in public in Washington DC,” Jaishankar added.</p>

<p>“So, it may have been our success in a literal way, but I think it was the G20 [nations] success. To me, it was also a success of the India-US&nbsp;partnership.… Please keep giving this partnership the support it needs, the support it deserves and the support it expects. And I can promise you that this relationship, like the Chandrayaan, will go to the Moon, maybe even beyond,” he said.</p>

<h2><strong>'India-US bond unique'&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Jaishankar said that what makes the US and India ties unique is the human bond between the two countries.</p>

<p>In the midst of strained diplomatic ties between India and Canada, India's Foreign Minister S Jaishankar took a jibe at the Canadian government and said that Ottawa's attitude towards terrorists, extremist people who openly advocate violence was 'very permissive'.</p>

<p>"This has been an issue of great friction for many years with Canada. But in the last few years, it has come back very much into play because of what we consider to be a very permissive Canadian attitude towards terrorists, and extremist people who openly advocate violence. And they have been given operating space in Canada because of the compulsions of Canadian politics."</p>

<p>While speaking on the India-Canada row in Washington, Jaishankar stated that the Indian diplomats do not feel safe going to the embassy because of the current situation prevailing in the country.</p>

<p>"Yes, I spoke to NSA Jake Sullivan and (US Secretary of State) Antony Blinken about Canada. They shared US views and assessments on this whole situation... I think hopefully we both came out of those meetings better and forward," he said.</p>

<p>"The Canadian PM made some allegations initially privately, and then publicly. And our response to him, both in private and public-- what he was alleging was not consistent with our policy. And that if he had, if his government had anything relevant and specific they would like us to look into, we were open to looking at it. Now, that's where that conversation is at this point in time," he added.</p>

<h2><strong>UN experts' concerns and India's reply&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>In early September, United Nations experts raised the alarm about "reports of serious human rights violations and abuses in the Northeast State of Manipur in India, including alleged acts of sexual violence, extrajudicial killings, home destruction, forced displacement, torture and ill-treatment".</p>

<p>In a statement, they said that there is an “inadequate humanitarian response” in the Indian state of Manipur after May clashes between Meitei and the Kuki ethnic communities. However, India rubbished the statement and termed it "unwarranted, presumptive, and misleading."</p>

<p>The law and order situation has once more become tense in Manipur.&nbsp;This comes in the wake of protests after two students were brutally murdered by suspected armed men. Manipur has been rocked by ethnic violence since May. Over 160 people have been killed while tens of thousands have been displaced.</p>

<p>The violence started after a court ordered the state government to consider extending special economic benefits and quotas in government jobs and education enjoyed by the tribal Kuki people to the majority Meitei population as well.</p>

He started his address by rendering India's support to the UNGA's theme of rebuilding trust and reigniting Global solidarity. He also hailed India's G20 success while adding that the world is witnessing exceptional periods of turmoil.

<p>"There is a growing sentiment in the world and the Global South in a way embodies it. But there’s also political resistance. Those occupying positions of influence are resisting pressure to change", said EAM Jaishankar during the event hosted by the Observer Research Foundation, in collaboration with the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, United Nations India and the Reliance Foundation.</p>

<p>"They will mouth the right things, but the reality is still today, it’s a world very much of double standards," he added.</p>

<p>Speaking about the Global South and India’s G20 Presidency, Jaishankar highlighted how India was ‘the voice of the Global South’ and how it steered the global conversation back to global growth and development issues by getting the G20 to talk about what the world wanted to talk about, the real problem of the G20.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“To get the G20, to talk about what the world wanted to talk about, that was the real problem with the G20. Our Prime Minister put it very well, he said first let’s talk to the people who are not going to be on the table. Let’s find out what they have to say. This is why, we were the voice of the Global South. I think it gave us the basis to say, look we have spoken to 125 countries and this is really what is troubling them and that is why we need to focus on this issue”, said Jaishankar.</p>

<p>“I think there's clearly a sense of history. There is much of the Global South coming from a world that was colonized. There is a sense of geography. Not all countries in the South are part of the Global South. And, I think there's also the mindset. So, the Global South is an expression, in a way, of a certain solidarity and generosity and sort of a sharing spirit community. I think if you're part of the Global South, you know it," he added.</p>

<p>Talking further, the Minister also said that the Global South ate less wheat and more millets.<br />
“In the name of the market a lot of things are done, like in the name of freedom a lot of things are done,” said EAM Jaishankar.</p>

<p>In his Europe’s mindset comment from last year, where he said that “Europe’s problems are the world’s problems but the world’s problems are not Europe’s problems”, EAM Jaishankar said that "particular statement had a particular context" while also listing five big problems which is troubling the entire world.</p>

People will say debt, SDG resourcing, climate action resourcing, digital access, and I would say it could be nutrition, gender,” said EAM Jaishankar.</p>

<p>“If you look between SDGs redevelopment, woman-led development, the digital public infrastructure, these are actually going to be the issues determined to the global progress of the next decade. Why I said this, I must also recognise, at the G20, that slot of European countries and other G20 nations, you know once you kind of reason with them and focus on them, I think everybody came on board. So, it took a country or a set of countries really to make that effort and bring the global conversation back on track,” he added.</p>

<p>Referring to the full consensus achieved by the New Delhi Declaration, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that many people were surprised when India was able to get everybody together.<br />
“On the G20 Summit, a lot of folks were still surprised that we actually got everybody together. I don’t think they completely expected that. So there will be one set of people who are still wondering how that happened”, said EAM.</p>

<p>“The other part, which I think includes some people with me here now has appreciated that we got the G20 to focus on the Global South and that the job for which the G20 was created, which was global growth and development, we got them to refocus on it and with particular attention to the Global South. We did that partly by organizing a Global South summit in advance,” he added.&nbsp;</p>

'It is still a world of double standards': EAM Jaishankar takes dig at ‘dominant’ nations

<p>External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met with the foreign minister of Armenia, Ararat Mirzoyan on the sidelines of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Sunday in New York.</p>

<p>Armenia and India's relations have been established since New Delhi recognized the independent Republic of Armenia on December 26, 1991, and after that, an ambassador in Moscow was concurrently accredited to Yerevan.</p>

<p>Earlier, in September, the India Eurasia Trade Council (IETC) organized the India-Armenia Conference 2022 in Bengaluru where participants discussed with the Ambassador of Armenia the issues and prospects of the bilateral economic cooperation and presented several interesting proposals aimed at jointly implementing them.</p>

Jaishankar meets counterparts from Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina on sidelines of UNGA

<p>Indian Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar said Saturday (September 23) that India "walks the talk" when it comes to South-South cooperation. He made these comments while addressing India-UN for Global South: Delivering for Development in New York.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Indian foreign minister also spoke on how the G20 Summit hosted by New Delhi laid a foundation to look at development prospects with optimism.&nbsp;However, he also called India's G20 Presidency challenging owing to “very sharp East-West polarisation and a very deep North-South divide.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>During his address, Jaishankar said, “Your presence means a lot to us. It also expresses the sentiments that you feel for India and underlines the import of South-South cooperation. We met just a few weeks after the New Delhi G20 Summit, a summit which took place on the theme of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future'.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Now, it was a challenging summit. It was actually a challenging presidency, and it was challenging because we were confronting a very sharp East-West polarisation as well as a very deep North-South divide. But we were very determined as the Presidency of the G20 to make sure that this organisation on which the world really had put so much hope was able to get back to its core agenda,” he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jaishankar laid particular emphasis on how the development of Global South was India's top agenda at the G20 Summit. It is to be noted that India has always been a strong supporter of increasing South-South cooperation. This is even more evident as the African Union joined the G20 bloc this year.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He said that it is becoming clearer that geopolitics calculation is impacting basic requirements of countries like food and energy. The minister also affirmed that India will be a partner, contributor and collaborator to deal with development challenges.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jaishankar&nbsp;said that G20's "core agenda was of global growth and development. So it was appropriate that we started our G20 Presidency by convening the voice of the Global South Summit. An exercise which involved 125 nations of the south of which most of you in some capacity participated."&nbsp;</p>

It was actually a challenging presidency, and it was challenging because we were confronting a very sharp East-West polarisation as well as a very deep North-South divide. But we were very determined as the Presidency of the G20 to make sure that this organisation on which the world really had put so much hope was able to get back to its core agenda,” he added. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday began a nine-day visit to the US, primarily to attend the annual session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York and to host a special event on Global South.

<p>Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that there is a need to shed the “West is the bad guy” syndrome, as he said that they are not flooding goods on a massive scale in Asia and Africa, in an indirect reference to China.</p>

<p>In an interview to Indian news channel Asianet on Sunday (Sept 17), Jaishankar further said that his remarks should not be seen as a defence of the Western countries.</p>

<p>He was in Thiruvananthapuram as part of the launch of the&nbsp;PM Vishwakarma scheme.</p>

<p>"It is not the West which is flooding Asia and Africa with goods on a massive scale. I think we need to get over the syndrome of the past that the West is the bad guy and on the other side are the developing countries. The world is more complicated, the problems are much more complicated than that," the minister said in response to a question by former Indian diplomat TP Sreenivasan, who interviewed Jaishankar for the channel.</p>

<h2><strong>China's&nbsp;trade and economic policies</strong></h2>

<p>He said the issue today was the building up of a strong sense, over the last 15-20 years, over the inequities of globalisation where countries saw their products, manufacturing and employment come under stress due to their markets being flooded by cheap goods — an indirect reference to the Chinese trade and economic policies.</p>

<p>The minister said this underlying resentment and pain of those countries regarding the global economy was building up for the last 15-20 years and the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukraine conflict resulted in prices of energy and food items going up.</p>

<p>“So, there was a sense of anger building up in countries about them being used as an extractive resource to fuel the economy of another nation and added that the West was not to be blamed for that,” he added.</p>

<h2><strong>Not defending West</strong></h2>

<p>He, however, quickly pointed out that he was not defending the West and said that the way manufacturing is being leveraged and subsidised, it is affecting the manufacturing of many nations’ economies.</p>

<p>However, India's manufacturing, agriculture, scientific achievements like the Chandrayaan-3 mission, ability to vaccinate, etc,&nbsp;all of that has created a sense among the Global South, which includes the African Union, "that one of us has the ability to stand, grow and progress".</p>

<p>"So, they identify with us in a way that they do not with other people," Jaishankar said.</p>

<p>Commenting on why Chinese President Xi Jinping skipped the G20 summit in New Delhi, Jaishankar said the reasons were up for speculation.</p>

<p>In an interview with ANI, Jaishankar said, "It is a different world, a different India. It is a different Prime Minister. It is a different government. And that is why you have all that you haven't seen in the past."</p>

<p>When asked about a consensus on G-20 joint communique, Jaishankar said that&nbsp;G-20 is a collective exercise.</p>

I mean, for me, anybody would try to put across their national position, try to maximise their negotiating position if you would. I think you should wait and see what actually happens in the negotiation, not prejudge it purely in terms of what may be said on one occasion. <p>Speaking on India taking up the voice of the Global South to G20, the minister said that no other presidency had aimed at getting developing countries together.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"No other G-20 presidency has tried to get together developing countries who are not on the table and say -- please come, sit with us, tell us what are your concerns. And we will distil those concerns and place them before the G-20. That is a unique exercise," the foreign affairs minister said.&nbsp;<br />

"I see it more for India as a responsibility, that we have the responsibility today in a very difficult world. How do you bring people together? <p>Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning reportedly said, "At the invitation of the government of the Republic of India, Premier of the State Council Li Qiang will attend the 18th G20 Summit to be held in New Delhi, India, on September 9 and 10."&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, no explanation was provided for President Xi's absence.</p>

<p>On the Russian front, President Vladimir Putin opted not to attend the summit, with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov representing Russia instead.</p>

Jaishankar says G20 Summit to be defined by positions taken, not leaders' attendance

<p>India's foreign minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday (Aug 29) called out China's "absurd claims" for showing Indian territories as theirs in the new so-called "standard maps" issued by Beijing.</p>

<p>Speaking at a conclave in the capital New Delhi city, Jaishankar said that it was an "old habit" of China to put out maps claiming territories that don't belong to them, and added that the Modi government is very serious about the issue.</p>

<p>"China has put out maps with territories not theirs. Old habit. Putting out maps with parts in India doesn't change anything. Our government is very clear about territory. Making absurd claims does not make other people's territories yours," Jaishankar told NDTV channel.</p>

<p>The "standard maps" 2023 edition was issued by Beijing on Monday (Aug 28) which showed certain Indian areas, like Arunachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Aksai Chin region as part of China.</p>

<p>It also laid claim to Taiwan and some regions of the disputed South China Sea. Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Brunei have all claims over the latter.</p>

<p>"We have today lodged a strong protest through diplomatic channels with the Chinese side on the so-called 2023 "standard map” of China that lays claim to India’s territory."</p>

<p>"We reject these claims as they have no basis. Such steps by the Chinese side only complicate the resolution of the boundary question”.</p>

<h2><strong>Comes after Modi-Xi meeting&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>The provocative map was released just a few days after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese leader Xi Jinping met on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, where both leaders called for de-escalation of tensions in eastern Ladakh near the Indo-China border.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, this is not the first time that China has put out maps showing Indian territories as its own. And each time, the Indian government has strongly retorted to their illegal claims.&nbsp;<br />

New Delhi has repeatedly told Beijing that "Arunachal Pradesh was, is, and will always remain an integral and inalienable part of India".</p>

<p>In April this year, China renamed 11 places in Arunachal Pradesh, referring to them as "Zangnan, the southern part of Tibet".</p>

<p>In a written reply to Lok Sabha, the foreign minister said over 17,50,000&nbsp;people have renounced their Indian citizenship since 2011.&nbsp;Jaishankar laid out detailed data on the number of Indians who gave up their citizenship over the years since 2011.</p>

<p>He said 2,25,620 Indians renounced their citizenship in 2022, 1,63,370 in 2021, 85,256 in 2020, 1,44,017 in 2019, 1,34,561 in 2018, 1,33,049 in 2017, 1,41,603 in 2016, 1,31,489 in 2015, 1,29,328 in 2014, 1,31,405 in 2013, 1,20,923 in 2012 and 1,22,819 in 2011.</p>

<p>"The number of Indian nationals exploring the global workplace has been significant in the last two decades. Many of them have chosen to take up foreign citizenship for reasons of personal convenience," the minister said.&nbsp;</p>

More than 87,000 Indians gave up citizenship till June this year, says Jaishankar

<p>A terrorist figurehead&nbsp;based out of Canada who propagate separation of India's Punjab region, issued a threat to target India's foreign minister Dr S. Jaishankar, home minister Amit Shah and Indian High Commissioner to Canada Sanjay Kumar Verma.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The threat was issued by Gurpatwant Singh Pannu of proscribed Sikh for Justice (SFJ) outfit through a video in which he accused New Delhi of abetting to the murder of another terrorist figurehead Hardeep Singh Nijjar.</p>

The threat was issued by Gurpatwant Singh Pannu of proscribed Sikh for Justice (SFJ) outfit through a video in which he accused New Delhi of abetting to the murder of another terrorist figurehead Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Pannun holds twin passports of US and Canada, and is wanted by National Investigation Agency (NIA) under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Pannun is the legal advisor and spokesperson for banned Sikhs for Justice. Terrorist threatens to target India's foreign minister Jaishankar, home minister Amit Shah

<p>India's External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar met his Myanmar counterpart Than Swe on Sunday and discussed initiatives that can be taken in order to enhance the connectivity between the two countries. Their discussions centred around the India-Myanmar-Thailand trilateral highway, further underlining the importance of ensuring peace and stability in the border areas.</p>

<p>Jaishankar, who had arrived in Bangkok from Indonesia on Saturday, also met Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai.</p>

<p>He said that the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway had been a "very difficult project" because of the situation in Myanmar and that it was the government's priority to find ways to resume it.</p>

<p>Taking to Twitter, he said, "Met H.E. U Than Swe on the sidelines of the Mekong Ganga Cooperation (MGC) meeting in Bangkok today. Our discussions focused on connectivity initiatives that have a larger regional significance. These will also be discussed at the MGC meeting this afternoon. Stressed the importance of expediting projects that have faced challenges in the recent past, especially the India-Myanmar-Thailand trilateral highway. Underlined the importance of ensuring peace and stability in our border areas. These have been seriously disturbed recently and any actions that aggravate the situation should be avoided."&nbsp;</p>

<p>He met the Myanmar Foreign Minister on the sidelines of the Mekong Ganga Cooperation (MGC) Mechanism meeting.</p>

<p>MGC is one of the oldest mechanisms of the lower Mekong region and is guided by India's Act East Policy.</p>

<p>He further said that the issues related to human and drug trafficking were also raised in the meeting.</p>

<p>"Flagged concerns about human and drug trafficking. Urged stronger cooperation among relevant parties for the early return of trafficked victims. As an immediate neighbor, India is concerned about the humanitarian situation in Myanmar. Proposed people-centric initiatives aimed to address the pressing challenges. India supports the democratic transition process in Myanmar and highlights the need for return of peace and stability. We will closely coordinate our policy with ASEAN in this regard," he further added.</p>

<p>Approximately 1,300 km long highways are currently in the works and once constructed will enhance trade ties between Myanmar and Thailand.</p>

<p>After the meeting, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Myanmar also released a statement saying that during the meeting with the Indian External Affairs Minister, the Union Minister discussed&nbsp;the Myanmar Government’s efforts to ensure peace, prosperity and democracy in line with the Five-Point Roadmap and latest developments of Myanmar.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"They also cordially exchanged views on matters pertaining to the promotion of longstanding friendly bilateral relations between the two countries and the expansion of mutually beneficially cooperation in the areas, among others, border area development and security, connectivity as well as closer collaboration in the regional and international fora including the Mekong-Ganga Cooperation and the BIMSTEC," the statement read.</p>

<p>After meeting Than Swe, Jaishankar met Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Thailand, Don Pramudwinai.</p>

<p>"Continuing our conversations from Jakarta. Pleased to meet Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai of Thailand today. Look forward to the Mekong Ganga Cooperation (MGC) meeting this afternoon," Jaishankar tweeted.</p>
