Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar on Monday (May 13) reacted to the arrest of the fourth alleged Indian national in Canada in connection with the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

Jaishankar said the Canadian authorities have not shared any data with India that is relevant enough to be investigated by New Delhi. Amandeep Singh, 22, a resident of Brampton,&nbsp; Surrey&nbsp;was arrested in Canada last week and charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. As per reports, he&nbsp;is believed&nbsp;to be one of the two gunmen who opened fire on Nijjar on June 18 last year.

"I also read that another arrest has been made...We have long maintained that if any event or violence in Canada has any evidence or information that is relevant to be investigated in India, we are open to investigating it. To date, we have never received anything specific or worthy of being investigated by our investigative agencies...," Jaishankar said.

‘Never received relevant info from Canada’: Jaishankar slams Ottawa over Nijjar killing case

India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday (May 11), recalled the 1998 Pokhran nuclear tests conducted under the leadership of then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and stated that the decision by the NDA government has ever since ensured the country's national security.

On the event's 26th anniversary, he also asserted that the current ruling government was following the previous 1998 NDA government's footsteps and working vigorously towards countering terrorism and fortifying border infrastructure.

Taking to his official X handle, the EAM wrote, "This day in 1998, an NDA Government finally exercised India's nuclear weapon option. That momentous decision has since ensured our National Security. The current NDA Government has built on that foundation, robustly countering terror and building our border infrastructure."

He underlined that the political choices made by the respective governments were eventually made taking into consideration the future of Bharat.

Indian foreign minister S&nbsp;Jaishankar dismissed US President Joe Biden's comment that xenophobia was hobbling the South Asian nation's economic growth, as reported by The Economic Times on Saturday (May 4).

During a round table hosted by the newspaper on Friday (May 3), Jaishankar said that India's economy is not faltering and that it has been a society that is very open.

"This is the reason we have the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which is to open up doors for people who are in trouble. I think we should be open to people who have the need to come to India, who have a claim to come to India," Jaishankar said, referring to a law that allows immigrants who have fled persecution from neighbouring countries to become citizens.

Earlier this week, Biden stated that xenophobia in China, Japan, and India was impeding economic growth in those countries. He contrasted this with the positive impact of immigration on the US economy, highlighting that welcoming immigrants contributes to America's economic vitality.

"One of the reasons why our economy's growing is because of you and many others. Why? Because we welcome immigrants," Biden said during a fundraising event for his 2024 re-election campaign, which coincided with the start of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday (Apr 15) expressed concern over the rise in the deaths of Indian students overseas.

He said that even though such cases were unconnected, as many of the students were killed due to personal reasons and many died in accidents, they were still a matter of huge concern for the government.

Jaishankar on being questioned about the rise in the number of Indian students being targeted in attacks in foreign countries, said, “Obviously, in every case, wherever anything unfortunate has happened to the students, it is of great tragedy for the family, and a big concern for us but...our embassy or consulate has looked at every case and they're actually unconnected."

He then said that embassies have been directed to stay in touch with the students and also provide information to them about the cities and the areas that they should avoid travelling to.

He added that there are 11 lakh to 12 lakh Indian students living in various countries.

“Student welfare is very important. Like I said, every Indian going out, you have Modi's guarantee. Student welfare is particularly important for us,” Jaishankar said.&nbsp;

India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday (Apr 1) took a dig at China over its claims on Arunachal Pradesh stating that changing names would not have any impact on the fact that the northeastern state is, was and will always be a part of India.

"If today I change the name of your house, will it become mine? Arunachal Pradesh was, is and will always be a state of India. Changing names does not have an effect," Jaishankar said while addressing a press conference in Gujarat.

"Our army is deployed at the Line of Actual Control...," added EAM.

Jaishankar's remarks came following China's claim where it dubbed the Indian State as Zangan and called it an "inherent part of China's territory".

"Zangnan has been China's territory since ancient times. This is an undeniable fact,"&nbsp;said Senior Colonel Wu Qian, spokesperson for China's Ministry of National Defence.

The Chinese Defence Ministry released a statement saying that Beijing "never acknowledges and firmly opposes" the "so-called Arunachal Pradesh illegally established by India."

After this, India rebuffed Beijing's "baseless arguments" and "absurd claims" and asserted that the northeastern state was an "integral and inalienable part of India."

<h2>US opposes China's claims on Arunachal Pradesh</h2>

Earlier, the United States had condemned China over its claims on the northeastern state and said that it "strongly opposes" any attempts made by Beijing to advance territorial claims across the Line of Actual Control.

“The United States recognises Arunachal Pradesh as Indian territory and we strongly oppose any unilateral attempts to advance territorial claims by incursions or encroachments, military or civilian, across the Line of Actual Control,” said State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel.

The Ministry of External Affairs in an official statement also noted that the people of Arunachal Pradesh will “continue to benefit” from India’s development programmes and infrastructure projects.

“We have noted the comments made by the Spokesperson of the Chinese Defence Ministry advancing absurd claims over the territory of the Indian State of Arunachal Pradesh. Repeating baseless arguments in this regard does not lend such claims any validity,” said the official spokesperson of MEA, Randhir Jaiswal.

“Arunachal Pradesh was, is and will always be an integral and inalienable part of India. Its people will continue to benefit from our development programmes and infrastructure projects,” the statement added.

India is offering specialised training to Philippines Coast Guard personnel: EAM S Jaishankar

External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, who is on a formal visit to Manila, said on Tuesday that India firmly supports the Philippines in upholding its national sovereignty and will continue to further enhance cooperation in various fields, including defence and security.

'We firmly support Philippines in upholding its national sovereignty': EAM Jaishankar in Manila

India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Sunday (Mar 24) said&nbsp;“a terrorist is a terrorist” and one should never allow terrorism to either be excused or defended just because people were using a different explanation for it. &nbsp;

His remarks at an interaction with the Indian community in Singapore came in the wake of the terror attack in a Moscow theatre that left nearly 140 people dead.

In response to a question about how Indian officials handle delicate and linguistically disparate subjects with their international counterparts, Jaishankar stated that many countries bring their own cultures, traditions, and at times their ideas to the table while engaging in diplomatic discussions.

"It's also natural that there will be different viewpoints. And what diplomacy is about is to find a way of reconciling it and coming to some kind of agreement," he said.

However, he said there were some issues like terrorism where clarity persists and there is no scope for confusion.

"You can take it in any language, but a terrorist is a terrorist in any language," he said.

"Never allow something like terrorism to be excused or defended because they're using a different language or a different explanation," he said.

His comments could also be an apparent reference to China which has in the past dismissed proposals put forward by India and the US at the United Nations Security Council to blacklist several Pakistan-based terrorists, including Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist Sajid Mir.

He said there can be issues where two countries can genuinely have different viewpoints and there "will be issues when they are used as a cover as an excuse as a justification."

He then said that one should just know how to spot the difference and figure out a way to deal with it.

<h2>Jaishankar dismisses China’s claims on Arunachal Pradesh</h2>

Rebuffing China's claims regarding Arunachal Pradesh as “ludicrous”, Jaishankar on Saturday reiterated that the state was a “natural part of India”.

Responding to China's opposition to Indian leaders visiting the state and its repeated claims on Arunachal Pradesh, Jaishankar said that it was not a new issue.

“This is not a new issue. I mean China has laid claim, it has expanded its claim. The claims are ludicrous, to begin with, and remain ludicrous today,” he said in response to a question on the Arunachal issue after delivering a lecture at the NUS Institute of South Asian Studies.

He further underlined that Arunachal Pradesh was a “natural part of India.”&nbsp;

“So, I think we’ve been very clear, very consistent on this. And I think you know that is something which will be part of the boundary discussions which are taking place,” he stated.

Jaishankar dials Russian counterpart Lavrov, expresses condolence over loss of lives in Moscow terror attack

Jaishankar, responding to China's opposition to Indian leaders visiting the state and its repeated claims on Arunachal Pradesh, said that it was not a new issue.

“This is not a new issue. I mean China has laid claim, it has expanded its claim. The claims are ludicrous to begin with and remain ludicrous today,” he said in response to a question on the Arunachal issue after delivering a lecture at the NUS Institute of South Asian Studies.

“So, I think we’ve been very clear, very consistent on this. And I think you know that is something which will be part of the boundary discussions which are taking place,” he stated.

Jaishankar’s remarks come days after the Ministry of External Affairs dismissed the assertions made by the Chinese defence ministry.

“We have noted the comments made by the Spokesperson of the Chinese Defence Ministry advancing absurd claims over the territory of the Indian State of Arunachal Pradesh."

“Repeating baseless arguments in this regard does not lend such claims any validity. Arunachal Pradesh was, is and will always be an integral and inalienable part of India. Its people will continue to benefit from our development programmes and infrastructure projects,” the MEA said in a statement.

The Chinese foreign ministry had earlier objected to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Arunachal Pradesh.

“We reject the comments made by the Chinese side regarding the visit of the Prime Minister to Arunachal Pradesh. Indian leaders visit Arunachal Pradesh from time to time, as they visit other States of India,” the MEA said in a separate response last week.

<h2>Pakistan sponsoring terrorism at 'industry level'</h2>

Jaishankar during his three-day visit to Singapore also highlighted that Pakistan was sponsoring terrorism almost at an "industry level".

He further asserted that India will not overlook terrorists and "will not skirt this problem anymore".

"Every country wants a stable neighbourhood...if nothing else, you want at least a quiet neighbourhood," he said in response to a question on India's ties with Pakistan.

He laid emphasis on the fact that how Pakistan was sponsoring terrorism against India and was using it as "an instrument of statecraft".

"It's not a one-off happening...but very sustained, almost at an industry level...So what we have come to conclude is that we have to find a way of addressing (the menace), that dodging the problem gets us nowhere, it only invites more trouble," he said.

"I don't have a quick instantaneous fix (to this issue). But what I can tell you is that India will not skirt this problem anymore. We are not going to say, 'well, that happened and let's continue our dialogue'...we have a problem and we must be honest enough to face up to that problem, however difficult it is...we should not give the other country a free pass, saying there's nothing they can do about it or it's a very hard problem, or there's so much else at stake that let us overlook," he asserted.

Jaishankar stated that in India now "the mood is not to overlook terrorists".

Jaishankar’s remarks come days after the Ministry of External Affairs dismissed the assertions made by the Chinese defence ministry. “We have noted the comments made by the Spokesperson of the Chinese Defence Ministry advancing absurd claims over the territory of the Indian State of Arunachal Pradesh." “Repeating baseless arguments in this regard does not lend such claims any validity. Also read: India slams China for 'absurd' and 'baseless' comments over Arunachal Pradesh tunnel Pakistan sponsoring terrorism at 'industry level' Jaishankar during his three-day visit to Singapore also highlighted that Pakistan was sponsoring terrorism almost at an "industry level". (With inputs from agencies)

Jaishankar dismisses China’s claims on Arunachal Pradesh, calls them ‘ludicrous’

India's External Affairs Minister has reiterated New Delhi's position on the war in Ukraine stating that the conflict needs to be resolved through dialogue. Watch to know more.

EAM Jaishankar: 'We do not believe this is an era of war'

India's External Affairs Minister, Dr. S Jaishankar, robustly addressed accusations of India being a regional bully during a recent book launch event in New Delhi. Responding to queries about India's stance, he said that countries deemed as "big bullies" do not extend substantial assistance to their neighbours in times of need, in a comment directed at New Delhi's timely assistance to Sri Lanka during the country's economic crisis early on in 2022.&nbsp;

Jaishankar underlined India's significant support, stating, "Big bullies don’t provide a whopping aid of USD 4.5 billion to help neighbours when in distress. Big bullies don’t supply vaccines to other countries when Covid&nbsp;is on or make exceptions to their own rules to respond to food demands or fuel demands or fertiliser demands because some war in some other part of the world has complicated their lives."

During the event, the minister highlighted the positive shifts in India's relations with neighbouring countries, citing advancements in power grids, road infrastructure, and port usage. The 'neighbourhood first' policy is&nbsp;the premier foreign policy focus of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration under which India maintains good relations with countries in its immediate neighbourhood.

He specifically pointed to improved bilateral relations with countries such as Bangladesh and Nepal, emphasising the growth in trade, investments, and travel with nations like Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and the Maldives.

‘Bullies don’t help’: Jaishankar puts emphasis on India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy

India: EAM Jaishankar slams Pakistan, says 'SAARC' in trouble due to Pakistan's terrorism

Ahead of the formation of a new government in neighbouring Pakistan, India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday ruled out any immediate possibility of revival of regional grouping SAARC given Islamabad's "toolkit" of using terrorism in different ways, including against other members of the bloc.

In an interactive session at a think-tank, Jaishankar, without directly naming Pakistan, said the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) is in trouble as one of its member nations has been relentlessly backing terrorism.

"If you ask me whether I see a future for SAARC, in some ways, actually you are asking me if I see a future for that country. Because if that country does not really let go of those kinds of options in its armoury or its toolkit, then it is not just SAARC which is in danger. I mean, very frankly, you are looking at the state of that country as well," he said.

To a question on whether India is perceived by its neighbours as a bully, Jaishankar countered, saying, "A big bully does not provide USD 4.5 billion when the neighbours are in trouble. Big bullies do not supply vaccines to other countries when Covid (pandemic) was on and make exceptions to their own rules to respond to food demands, fuel demands, fertiliser demands because some war in some other part of the world has complicated their lives." Jaishankar was speaking at the Ananta Aspen Centre.

The external affairs minister said the SAARC is in trouble as one of its members has been supporting terrorism.

"The SAARC is in trouble basically because -- how do you have a regional organisation when one member does not hide the fact, in fact, sometimes proclaims the fact that they undertake, I am using the most neutral word possible, violent actions against other members?," he asked.

"If we are to sit as a group, but you reserve the right to attack me in the night, how long are we going to sit as a group? We have kind of obfuscated this issue for too long," Jaishankar said.

The SAARC is a regional bloc comprising India, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

"We found excuses that there is a constituency out there, there is a reason for why they are doing it. The bottom line is that we have to be clear in our own minds. Is it the view that we should proceed with SAARC even if one member of SAARC actually has training camps, trains terrorists, pushes them across (the border), supports them in different ways?," he further asked.

"It was heading for a crisis. It was just a certain succession of events, finally precipitating what happened," Jaishankar said.

The external affairs minister added: "Our problem in the neighbourhood, very honestly, is with one country." At the same time, he said "in diplomacy, you always hold out hopes", adding "who knows one day what the future holds".

The SAARC has not been very effective since 2016 as its biennial summits have not taken place since the last one in Kathmandu in 2014.

The 2016 SAARC Summit was to be held in Islamabad. But after a terrorist attack on an Indian Army camp in Uri in Jammu and Kashmir on September 18 that year, India expressed its inability to participate in the summit due to "prevailing circumstances".

The summit was called off after Bangladesh, Bhutan and Afghanistan also declined to participate in the Islamabad meet.

The external affairs minister said unlike the SAARC, cooperation under the BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) is moving ahead.

"I think there is today an appetite to grow under BIMSTEC," he said.
