<p>Indian External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar on Saturday (Feb 17) said what Palestinian militant group Hamas did on October 7 was an act of terrorism. Speaking on the sidelines of the ongoing Munich security conference, the Indian minister also warned Israel that it should be mindful of civilian casualties and observe international humanitarian law in Gaza.</p>

<p>“We must be clear that what happened on October 7 was terrorism,” S Jaishankar said, adding, “No caveats, no justification, no explanation, it was terrorism.”</p>

<p>“It is important that Israel should have been very mindful of civilian casualties and that it has an obligation to observe international humanitarian law,” the EAM said.</p>

<p>The number of Palestinians killed during the war in Gaza has surpassed 28,000 people, according to the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza.</p>

<p>Speaking of the hostages, Jaishankar said their release was important to secure a peace deal.</p>

<p>“The return of hostages is today imperative,” he said while sharing the stage with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.</p>

<p>Jaishankar further talked about the need to establish a humanitarian, sustainable corridor in Gaza to provide relief material to the Gazan population.</p>

<p>Jaishankar also talked about the need to have a long-term solution to the Israel-Gaza conflict. He said India’s commitment towards a two-state solution has been unwavering and it was more urgent than ever to secure a solution.</p>

<p>“Eventually, there has to be a permanent fix, a long term fix, otherwise you’re going to see reoccurrence. India has certainly believed in a two-state solution, we maintain that position from many decades,” Jaishankar said. “And today many more countries in the world feel not just the two-state solution is necessary but it is more urgent than it was before,” he added.</p>

We try to explain what are the different pulls and pressures that countries have. it's very hard to have that unidimensional relationship," Jaishankar said.</p>

I mean, the feeling is that if a body like the G20 could add a member, surely this should serve as an inspiration for other bodies, not least the United Nations," Jaishankar said.</p>

The move came following visiting External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar's meeting with Iran's Minister of Roads and Urban Development Mehrdad Bazrpash where the two held discussions over establishing a "long-term cooperation framework" for the port, a strategic maritime facility situated on the southeastern coast of Iran.</p>

<p>Jaishankar, who is on a two-day visit to Iran as part of the ongoing high-level exchanges between the two sides, took to his official X account and shared that both the ministers also exchanged views on the International North-South Transport Corridor.</p>

<p>Bazrpash additionally proposed setting up a joint transport committee for the expansion of bilateral cooperation, stating that the formation of the committee would boost&nbsp;the transit capabilities&nbsp;and usage of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), as per Iran's Tasnim News Agency.</p>

<p>In August 2023, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with Iranian President Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi where the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing bilateral cooperation and leveraging Chabahar Port to its full potential as a centre for connectivity.</p>

<h2><strong>Chabahar Port and India's connectivity initiatives</strong></h2>

<p>The Iranian port of Chabahar plays a significant role in India's connectivity initiatives as it provides a more economical and stable route for trade between India, Afghanistan, and Central Asia.&nbsp;</p>

<p>INSTC is a multi-modal transportation route that connects the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean to the Caspian Sea via Iran and then travels via St. Petersburg, Russia, to northern Europe.</p>

<p>According to MEA, India has utilised the Chabahar port to ship 75,000 MTs of wheat as humanitarian food assistance to Afghanistan in the year 2020. In 2021, India supplied 40,000 litres of environment-friendly pesticides to Iran to fight the locust menace. The port has also been utilised by the Central Asian Countries to access the global market and has increased trade and economic opportunities for the traders of the region.</p>

<p>Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar along with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov hailed "very steady and strong" New Delhi-Moscow relations,&nbsp;stating that the ties are based on strategic convergence and geopolitical interests and that they are mutually beneficial.</p>

<p>Jaishankar at a joint press briefing with Lavrov said that both sides had a "very good session of talks".</p>

<p>“I think today what clearly came out was that India-Russia relations remain very steady, remain very strong, they are based on our strategic convergence, on our geopolitical interests, and because they are mutually beneficial,” he said.</p>

<p>“For us, Russia is a valued partner, a time-tested partner. It is a relationship from which both India and Russia have benefitted enormously,” Jaishankar said while responding to a question.</p>

<p>“My presence here today and the fact that all the developments that I have pointed out including our growing trade, investments, our military-technical cooperation, our connectivity projects, I think all of this will give you a good sense of the importance and value that we attach to the relationship,” he added.</p>

<p>Talking about the North-South transport corridor, Jaishankar said that it was in the interest&nbsp;of the entire global economy. “It is in our interest and not just in our interest, I think in the interest of the global economy that this corridor progresses. And we will give it the highest priority,” he said responding to another question.</p>

<h2><strong>India-Russia trade exceeds USD 50 billion</strong></h2>

<p>Jaishankar, further highlighting the significant progress made, said that the bilateral trade had surpassed USD 50 billion.</p>

<p>He also emphasised the potential for further growth and the need to provide trade ties with a more sustainable character.</p>

<p>“We appreciate the fact that our trade is at an all-time high. We crossed $50 billion turnover last year. We expect to exceed that this year. And what is important is that this trade is more balanced. It is sustainable, and it provides for fair market access,” Jaishankar said.</p>

<p>He further said that the&nbsp;two countries also discussed cooperation in their relationship with the Russian Far East.</p>

<p>He said that he expects a delegation from the Far East to participate in the Vibrant Gujarat meeting in January.</p>

<p>“We discussed long-term arrangements. We are today, in our trade, energy, fertilizers, and cooking coal are very big components of that. How do we reach long-term arrangements in that regard was a big part of our discussion. We discussed mutual investments, and the need to progress on a bilateral investment treaty,” he said.</p>

<p>“We spoke about railways yesterday, about industrial zone infrastructure. And we have agreed that the negotiations between India and the Eurasian Economic Union for a free trade agreement will be resumed in the second half of January this year,” he said, referring to his meeting with the co-chair of the India-Russia Intergovernmental Commission, Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, on Tuesday.</p>

<p>“We also spoke about connectivity; connectivity from western India through the International North-South Transport Corridor. Also connectivity from eastern India, from Chennai to Vladivostok and the polar route. We discussed various related areas where India’s polar capabilities could be enhanced in collaboration with Russia,” he added.</p>

<p>He then said that civil aviation and tourism were also touched upon during the discussions between both sides. “We would like to see more Russian tourists in India. We have increased the number of flights from India every week, from 52 to 64. We are open to increasing it further.”</p>

<p>Lavrov said that the ties between both countries are based on mutual respect and that it was good to see that the relations were consistently making progress.</p>

<p>“We express our heartfelt gratitude to our Indian counterparts for their aspiration to take a responsible approach in considering and resolving regional and global issues, primarily focusing on national interests, the interests of equal and fair international cooperation. This approach is also characteristic of India’s position on the ongoing processes in and around Ukraine, and we have also talked about it,” Lavrov said.</p>

<p>He further lauded India's G20 presidency, adding that Russia backed India’s candidacy for the UN Security Council.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The New Delhi G20 Summit that took place last year was a true triumph of India’s foreign policy; it was a triumph of multilateral diplomacy, which has become possible, to a decisive degree, because the G20 Chair did not allow making the outcome document unilateral. The outcome document reflects the balance of interests,” he said.</p>

<p>Jaishankar, earlier on Wednesday (Dec 27), held wide-ranging talks with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov in Moscow where he said that the relations between both countries reflect geopolitical realities, strategic convergence and mutual benefit.</p>

<p>India's External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar, who is in Russia on a five-day visit, once again exuded confidence in the relations between New Delhi and Moscow saying that the ties have remained unfazed even as it is not the same with geopolitical dynamics between other countries over many decades.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jaishankar arrived in Moscow on Christmas (Dec 25) and he is due to hold talks with his counterpart Sergey Lavrov on Wednesday (Dec 27) where one of the top priorities&nbsp;will remain the ongoing Israel-Hamas war and Russia-Ukraine crisis that will complete its second year in February next year.</p>

<p>"To me, what is exceptional about India-Russia relationships. From the early 50s, for 70-80 odd years. There have been big changes in this period. The Soviet Union became the Russian Federation, big changes have happened in world politics, Russia has transformed, and India has grown. <p>India's External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar on Sunday (Dec 17) opened up about allegations made by the United States and Canada regarding pro-Khalistani elements saying that both the issues were not the same.</p>

<p>He further stated that India was ready to look into the matter as it is a responsible country.</p>

<p>While speaking at the Rotary Institute 2023 event in Bengaluru, Jaishankar asserted that India is willing to take into consideration the concerns shared by any other country referring to the allegations imposed by Canada about the alleged link of "agents of the Indian government" in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.</p>

<p>"I think everybody knows that India is a country where we are very responsible, very prudent in what we do and the whole issue for us has been that we have always maintained that. If any country, not just Canada, if any country has a concern and gives us some input or some basis for that concern, we are always open to looking at it," he said, adding, "This is what countries do."</p>

<p>"So we very sincerely have told the Canadians saying that look it's up to you, I mean your choice whether you would like us to pursue it, further look into it or not," he added.</p>

<h2><strong>US indictment of Nikhil Gupta</strong></h2>

<p>Jaishankar, speaking on US indictment of Indian national Nikhil Gupta in connection with a foiled murder plot to kill Khalistani separatist and leader of the banned Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) outfit Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, underlined that at the time America raised the issue, some specific things were brought to India's notice and that New Delhi was looking into it.</p>

<p>Earlier in November, the United States had charged Gupta with murder-for-hire over a conspiracy to assassinate Pannun, who is a dual citizen of America and Canada, the US attorney's office in Manhattan said in a statement.</p>

<p>US Attorney Damian Williams announced charges against Gupta, who was arrested by Czech authorities in the month of June this year in conformance to the bilateral extradition treaty between the United States and the Czech Republic.</p>

<p>Following this development, MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi released a statement saying that the case, allegedly linking Gupta to an Indian official was a "matter of concern" and was contrary to government policy.</p>

<p>On the other hand, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said alleged the involvement of "agents of the Indian government" in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.</p>

<p>However, India has rebuffed the claims calling them "absurd and motivated".</p>

<p>"And I can also tell you the global sentiment. I mean, today, if you ask 200 countries in the world, do you want reform or don't you want reform? <p>India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar raised the longstanding concerns of the country regarding the presence of pro-Khalistani extremism in Britain with the top leaders of the country and appealed to them to remain alert against misuse of freedom of expression and speech.</p>

<p>Jaishankar, who concluded his five-day visit to the UK on Wednesday, called it "timely" after various cross-party engagements were held amid progress on the free trade agreement negotiations, reported Indian news agency PTI.</p>

<p>“We have long-standing concerns about extremist and sometimes even violent activities of various forces, including those who propagate Khalistan,” Jaishankar stated.</p>

<p>While holding a meeting with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Jaishankar extended Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's best wishes. The two leaders expressed satisfaction with the positive momentum in strengthening the relationship between India and the United Kingdom.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We have been trying to get the government here to understand that while we as a fellow democracy certainly understand the importance of freedom of expression, and of speech, they should be on guard against the misuse of these freedoms,” Jaishankar stated.</p>

<p>Speaking about the violent protests held at India House in March, the minister stated that the “gravity of the situation is sharply recognised” and that the government had expected requisite protection to be provided to its diplomatic mission so as to conduct their activities in an unrestricted way.</p>

India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar raised the longstanding concerns of the country regarding the presence of pro-Khalistani extremism in Britain with the top leaders of the country and appealed to them to remain alert against misuse of freedom of expression and speech. Jaishankar, who concluded his five-day visit to the UK on Wednesday, called it "timely" after various cross-party engagements were held amid progress on the free trade agreement negotiations, reported Indian news agency PTI. “We have long-standing concerns about extremist and sometimes even violent activities of various forces, including those who propagate Khalistan,” Jaishankar stated. While holding a meeting with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Jaishankar extended Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's best wishes. The two leaders expressed satisfaction with the positive momentum in strengthening the relationship between India and the United Kingdom. EAM talks about requisite protection for diplomatic mission in UK Speaking about the discussions held with cabinet ministers and Opposition leaders in the UK, Jaishankar stated that India's concerns regarding pro-Khalistan extremism were discussed with UK Home Secretary James Cleverly and National Security Adviser (NSA) Tim Barrow. “We have been trying to get the government here to understand that while we as a fellow democracy certainly understand the importance of freedom of expression, and of speech, they should be on guard against the misuse of these freedoms,” Jaishankar stated. Speaking about the violent protests held at India House in March, the minister stated that the “gravity of the situation is sharply recognised” and that the government had expected requisite protection to be provided to its diplomatic mission so as to conduct their activities in an unrestricted way. In his meeting with Home Secretary Cleverly, the Indian minister stated that the two leaders “underscored the need for close collaboration on combating violent extremism and radicalism and agreed to deepen and expand dialogue on these and other shared concerns”. Talking about the 14th round of negotiations on the FTA which is slated ahead, Jaishankar said, “We have made substantial progress, but I don't think it would be prudent of me to make predictions or to put timelines. I think both sides are very aware of the importance of the FTA and will make the utmost effort to get there. So, we have to take it as it happens.” (With inputs from agencies)

<p>During a conversation hosted by the High Commission of India in London, titled 'How a billion people see the world,' Jaishankar discussed India's impactful position in global affairs.</p>

<p>EAM Jaishankar said, "So we've actually softened the oil markets and the gas markets through our purchase policies. We have, as a consequence, actually managed global inflation. I'm waiting for the thank you."</p>

<p>The minister explained that India's approach to oil purchases prevented a surge in global oil prices, preventing potential competition with Europe in the market.</p>

<p>He elaborated, "When it comes to the purchase...I think the global oil prices would have gone higher because we would have gone into the same market to the same suppliers that Europe would have done and as we discovered Europe would have outpriced us."</p>

<p>While acknowledging India's significance in the global markets,&nbsp;Jaishankar noted, "We saw that in the LNG markets where actually many supplies which were traditionally coming into Asia were diverted to Europe and in fact at least India was a big enough country to command some respect in the markets but there were much smaller countries who didn't even get responses to their tender in Paris because the LNG suppliers were no longer interested in dealing with them."</p>

<p>"They have bigger fish to fry," the EAM added.</p>

<p>In addressing India's stance on the Russia-Ukraine war, Jaishankar highlighted the balance between principles and interests.</p>

<p>"We have learned the hard way that people speak of principles...But they are tempered by interest. In this particular case, we have a very powerful interest to keep our relationship with Russia."</p>

<p>"But also India seems to find itself in a geopolitical sweet spot between east and west. So perhaps you could talk a little is about how India suddenly appears to be top of the heat, and then how is India going to exploit that position?" he asked Jaishankar.</p>

<p>In response, the EAM said, "I would say there's a momentum because there's a certain process which we are in the middle of at this point of time."</p>

<p>He also went on to elucidate several notable recent achievements of India ranging from handling of "COVID to the economic changes, the recapitalisation of banks, the effort to boost exports, the renewed business confidence, the socioeconomic changes, and a massive embrace of digital technology."</p>
