External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will visit the United States from 24 to 29 December, marking the first high-level official visit to the US following President-elect Donald Trump's victory in the presidential elections.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has announced that the minister will engage in discussions with his counterparts on significant bilateral, regional, and global issues.

“He will be meeting counterparts to discuss key bilateral, regional and global issues. During the visit, EAM will also chair a conference of the Consul Generals of India in the USA,” the MEA stated in an official release.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier congratulated President-elect Trump on his "historic election victory." In their first communication after the election results, Trump said that "India is a magnificent country and PM Modi is a magnificent man."
Following their conversation, Modi posted on X, “Had a great conversation with my friend, President @realDonaldTrump, congratulating him on his spectacular victory. Looking forward to working closely together once again to further strengthen India-US relations across technology, defence, energy, space and several other sectors.”
In another post, Modi wrote, “Heartiest congratulations my friend @realDonaldTrump on your historic election victory. As you build on the successes of your previous term, I look forward to renewing our collaboration to further strengthen the India-US comprehensive global and strategic partnership. Together, let’s work for the betterment of our people and to promote global peace, stability and prosperity.”
The visit comes amid allegations of bribery and fraud brought up by US authorities against Indian billionaire Gautam Adani. Addressing the issue, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said at the time, “We are aware of these allegations, and I would have to refer you to the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) and DOJ (Department of Justice) about the specifics of those allegations against the Adani Group.”
Commenting on India-US relations, she added, “What I will say is, on the US and India relationship, we believe that it stands on an extremely strong foundation, anchored in ties between our people and cooperation across a full range of global issues. And so what we believe, and we're confident about, is that we'll continue to navigate this issue, as we have with other issues that may have come up."

"And there is every reason for us to expect that they would say we got it right the first time, it's done well and therefore, we should keep with it," he added. India is scheduled to host the next Quad Summit in 2025. In 2020, the Chinese chose to bring a lot of forces to the border areas and obviously, we responded with counter-deployments," he said. We still have to de-escalate because what we have done is disengage forces from close proximity," he said. Jaishankar suggested that the focus will now be on de-escalation as a very large number of forces are still deployed in the region. "Now, we have to sit down and discuss with China how we rebuild our relationship and that is an exercise that still has to be undertaken," he said. Members would recall that the amassing of a large number of troops by China along the LAC in eastern Ladakh in April-May 2020 resulted in face-offs with our forces at a number of points. Expressing concerns over the escalating situation in West Asia, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday said that India has been in regular touch with both Israel and Iran to "advocate constraints" and "enhance communication" in an attempt to resolve the conflict between the two countries.

In his opening remark at the MED Mediterranean Dialogues Conference in Rome, Italy, the Foreign Minister reiterated India's strong condemnation of terrorism, and the abduction of hostages by Hamas, and affirmed support for reaching a ceasefire.

Jaishankar, however, also emphasised the need to abide by international humanitarian law and called large-scale civilian casualties "unacceptable."

"Today I focus my remarks on the conflicts. The situation in the Middle East is obviously deeply concerning, both for what has happened and what may still come. India unequivocally condemns terrorism and hostage-taking. It also regards large-scale civilian casualties in military operations to be unacceptable. International humanitarian law cannot be disregarded in immediate terms. We should all support a ceasefire," EAM Jaishankar said.

During the event, India's foreign minister&nbsp;said that what one nation may consider freedom, another might interpret as interference. “What is perceived as freedom by one nation can be viewed as interference by another. The fact is that sensitivities like sovereignty and territorial integrity will always be a factor in evaluating partners,” Jaishankar said, as quoted by news agency ANI.

“Some friends may also be more complicated than others. They may not always share the same culture of mutual respect or ethos of diplomatic etiquette. We have, from time to time, seen comments on our domestic issues,” the minister added.

If you look deeper, there are cultural and historical factors at work as well, including the fact that we are not a dogmatic civilisation,” the EAM said.

He also listed the benefits seen by India’s QUAD allies—the United States, Japan, and Australia—who, he suggested, had overcome past historical reservations through their alliance with India.&nbsp;

“The US, Japan, and Australia have benefitted from the QUAD. They are examples of overcoming the hesitations of history. UAE and Israel are from a region that is being engaged comprehensively at last. Russia and France are statements of multipolarity, ours as much as theirs,” he said.

Jaishankar credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and interest as crucial in driving these diplomatic shifts over the past decade.

Speaking at the BRICS Summit in Russia’s Kazan, the top Indian diplomat repeated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message of peace, saying it was not an era of war.

“How do we create a more equitable global order? First, by strengthening and expanding platforms of an independent nature, and by widening the choices in different domains and minimising undue reliance on those that can be leveraged. This is really where BRICS can make a difference for the Global South," the foreign minister said.

He added that more members should be added to the UN Security Council in both the permanent and the non-permanent categories. India's External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar said on Saturday (Oct 5) that there are no plans to engage in talks with Pakistan during his upcoming visit to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting.

The EAM&nbsp;stressed that his trip to Pakistan was purely for the SCO summit. "Yes, I am scheduled to go to Pakistan in the middle of this month and that is for the meeting of the SCO — the heads of government meeting," he said during the Sardar Patel Lecture on Governance organised by the IC Centre for Governance in New Delhi.

Since I am a courteous and civil person, I will behave myself accordingly," the EAM said.

Jaishankar further added that this year's SCO summit is being hosted in Islamabad, as Pakistan, like India, recently joined the organisation. He added, "Normally, the Prime Minister goes to the high-level meeting, the heads of state, that’s in line with the tradition. It so happens that the meeting is taking place in Pakistan, because, like us, they are a relatively recent member."

During his speech, Jaishankar also appeared to indirectly criticise Pakistan, blaming it for the lack of progress in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).

He said, "At the moment SAARC is not moving forward, we haven't had a meeting of SAARC for a very simple reason - there is one member of SAARC who is practising cross-border terrorism at least against one more member of SAARC, maybe more...
