He further said that India had been "schooled too long to visualise progress and modernity as a rejection of our heritage and traditions."

The minister stressed the need for having an impact at the societal level. "To that it is essential that we ourselves, the younger generation, are fully aware of the value and significance of our heritage. This can be articulated at various levels, but most importantly, it should have an impact at the societal level," he said.
He noted that in the last decade, India had shown everyone that it had the capabilities, confidence, and commitment to advance development across the board.
"It has shown that the age-old problems of poverty, discrimination, and lack of opportunities can indeed be addressed. On the global stage, it has established itself as an independent power, but one committed to global good, especially the well-being of the global south," he added.

Russian President Vladimir Putin held his annual press conference on Thursday (December 19), where he addressed both national and international media. For the second consecutive year, the event was combined with the "Direct Line" programme, allowing ordinary Russians to send in over 1.5 million questions.
During the conference, Putin agreed with India's perspective on BRICS, describing it as a "non-Western" group. He said that BRICS does not work against any country but instead focuses on the interests of its member nations.
Citing Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar’s statement that "BRICS isn’t anti-Western. It’s just not Western," Putin called the statement "the best" and added that the group has no negative agenda.

Speaking about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Putin mentioned that he enjoys warm relations with the leader, reflecting the strong ties between Russia and India.
Jaishankar’s statement, which Putin referred to, was made during a panel discussion at the Munich Security Conference on 17 February 2024. The panel included US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.
When asked about India’s ability to maintain relationships with diverse partners such as the US, Europe, and Russia, Jaishankar rejected the notion that BRICS, dominated by Beijing and Moscow, was “anti-Western”.
"I think it's important today to make a distinction between being 'non-West' and 'anti-West'," Jaishankar said. He added, "I’d not only characterise India as a country that is non-West but one which has extremely strong relations with Western countries, getting better by the day." He also added that this characterisation might not apply equally to other BRICS members.

Jaishankar also addressed how India balances its relationship with Washington while continuing trade with Moscow. He said that India’s foreign policy is not purely transactional, saying, "We get along with people, we believe in things, we share things...but there are times when you are located in different places, different levels of development, different experiences, all of that gets."

The Quad is growing and its agenda makes it one of the "most expansive" inter-governmental frameworks, and the incoming Donald Trump administration is unlikely to reduce support for the coalition, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Friday.

The Quad is growing and its agenda makes it one of the "most expansive" inter-governmental frameworks, and the incoming Donald Trump administration is unlikely to reduce support for the coalition, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Friday. In an interactive session at the India-Japan Forum here, Jaishankar recalled how Trump's first tenure as the US president supported the shaping of the Quad and its subsequent growth. The Quad, comprising India, the United States, Australia and Japan, has been focusing on ensuring peace, stability and inclusive growth in the Indo-Pacific against the backdrop of China's growing military muscle-flexing in the region. Also read: 'Exposes duplicity,' India slams Pakistan, demands action against Pulwama attack mastermind Masood Azhar "In 2017, it was the first year of the Trump administration when it (Quad) started at the vice-minister's level. Then in 2019, it was again under the Trump administration that it moved from the vice-minister's level to the foreign minister's level," Jaishankar said. "And there is every reason for us to expect that they would say we got it right the first time, it's done well and therefore, we should keep with it," he added. India is scheduled to host the next Quad Summit in 2025. The Quad is growing and its agenda makes it "one of the most expansive sort of inter-governmental coordination that is today in evidence", Jaishankar said. On India's ties with China following the eastern Ladakh border row, Jaishankar referred to the implementation of the latest disengagement arrangement and said challenges remain with regard to de-escalation on the Line of Actual Control (LAC). "Our entire relationship with China was predicated on the fact that the border areas would remain peaceful and stable and we had agreements to ensure that. In 2020, the Chinese chose to bring a lot of forces to the border areas and obviously, we responded with counter-deployments," he said. Referring to the completion of the disengagement process, the external affairs minister said it took almost four years and a half. "We still have challenges left with us. We still have to de-escalate because what we have done is disengage forces from close proximity," he said. Jaishankar suggested that the focus will now be on de-escalation as a very large number of forces are still deployed in the region. "Now, we have to sit down and discuss with China how we rebuild our relationship and that is an exercise that still has to be undertaken," he said. The eastern Ladakh military standoff between India and China began in May 2020 and a deadly clash at the Galwan Valley in June that year resulted in a severe strain in ties between the two neighbours. The face-off effectively ended following the completion of a disengagement process from the last two friction points of Demchok and Depsang under an agreement finalised on October 21. Two days after the pact was firmed up, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held talks on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in the Russian city of Kazan. At the meeting, the two sides agreed to revive several dialogue mechanisms, including the Special Representatives' dialogue on boundary questions. India's special representative for the dialogue is National Security Advisor Ajit Doval while the Chinese side is headed at the talks by Foreign Minister Wang Yi. On India's ties with Japan, Jaishankar highlighted the significance of the partnership between the two countries in the area of semiconductors. "Japan is revitalising its semiconductor sector and India, after a very long period of neglect, has also announced a semiconductor mission.... Lot of things are happening," he said. "Both of us also happen to work with Taiwan. I am seeing the beginnings of something potentially important here," the minister added. "As far as Israel is concerned, it is a country with which we have a strong record of cooperation in national security. It is also a country that has stood by us at different moments when our national security was under threat. When we take any decision, we will bear in mind the larger circumstances but we will be guided by our national security interests," he said.

'Israel stood by India during national security threats,' Jaishankar briefs parliament on Israel-Hamas war

Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said Tuesday (Dec. 3) that the ties between New Delhi and Beijing have seen improvement in the recent past, saying the next priority for the two nations would be continuing de-escalation.

The Indian minister was addressing the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament, on India-China ties.

Jaishankar added that ties between the two Asian neighbours can’t be normal without peace at the border. He also urged China to respect the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the de facto border between the two nations.

“Recent developments that reflect continuous diplomatic engagements have set Indo-China ties in the direction of some improvement. Disengagement has been achieved in full in eastern Ladakh," the Indian foreign minister said.

Jaishankar in his address said that peace and tranquility along the LAC had been disturbed “as a result of Chinese actions” but recent developments indicate improvement in ties. However, Jaishankar also stressed that China continues to illegally occupy 38,000 square km of the Indian territory.

A Russian air strike killed two civilians in northeastern Ukraine's Sumy, this as per President Zelensky, who in a video on the Telegram messaging app informed that rescue operations were underway at the site after multiple rocket system strikes hit a car service station. Meanwhile, India's external affairs minister Dr S Jaishanker who was also in Italy to attend the G7 foreign ministers meeting once again called for restraint asserting that one is not going to find a solution from the battlefield and at some stage will have to come to the table...the sooner they do it the better because the rest of the world is being affected.

Expressing concerns over the escalating situation in West Asia, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday said that India has been in regular touch with both Israel and Iran to "advocate constraints" and "enhance communication" in an attempt to resolve the conflict between the two countries.

In his opening remark at the MED Mediterranean Dialogues Conference in Rome, Italy, the Foreign Minister reiterated India's strong condemnation of terrorism, and the abduction of hostages by Hamas, and affirmed support for reaching a ceasefire.

Jaishankar, however, also emphasised the need to abide by international humanitarian law and called large-scale civilian casualties "unacceptable."

"Today I focus my remarks on the conflicts. The situation in the Middle East is obviously deeply concerning, both for what has happened and what may still come. India unequivocally condemns terrorism and hostage-taking. It also regards large-scale civilian casualties in military operations to be unacceptable. International humanitarian law cannot be disregarded in immediate terms. We should all support a ceasefire," EAM Jaishankar said.

'India unequivocally condemns terrorism, in regular touch with Israel, Iran': Jaishankar at Rome conference

Canada has blocked social media pages of Australia Today, a prominent media outlet, India’s Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Thursday (Nov. 7), stressing that this highlights the hypocrisy of Canada’s 'freedom of speech'.

This comes after the presser of India’s EAM Jaishankar and his Australian counterpart Penny Wong was covered by Australia Today.

“We understand that social media pages have been blocked. This happened hours after EAM Jaishankar, Australia FM Wong's presser. We were surprised. Highlights the hypocrisy of Canada's freedom of speech,” Randhir Jaiswal said during a weekly briefing.

Canada censors Australia Today over Jaishankar’s presser, India blasts Ottawa’s ‘hypocrisy’

India's External Affairs Minister (EAM) Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, said on Saturday (Nov 2) that friendships in the modern world are no longer exclusive, pointing to the evolving multipolar global landscape. Speaking at a book launch in New Delhi, Jaishankar highlighted India's aim to be a “Vishwamitra” or a friend to as many countries as possible.

During the event, India's foreign minister said that what one nation may consider freedom, another might interpret as interference. “What is perceived as freedom by one nation can be viewed as interference by another. The fact is that sensitivities like sovereignty and territorial integrity will always be a factor in evaluating partners,” Jaishankar said, as quoted by news agency ANI.

“Some friends may also be more complicated than others. They may not always share the same culture of mutual respect or ethos of diplomatic etiquette. We have, from time to time, seen comments on our domestic issues,” the minister added.

Stressing India’s openness to partnerships, Jaishankar described India as an adaptable civilisation, one that welcomes ties with various nations. “India is today positioning itself as a Vishwamitra. We seek to be friends with as many as possible... If you look deeper, there are cultural and historical factors at work as well, including the fact that we are not a dogmatic civilisation,” the EAM said.

He also listed the benefits seen by India’s QUAD allies—the United States, Japan, and Australia—who, he suggested, had overcome past historical reservations through their alliance with India.

“The US, Japan, and Australia have benefitted from the QUAD. They are examples of overcoming the hesitations of history. UAE and Israel are from a region that is being engaged comprehensively at last. Russia and France are statements of multipolarity, ours as much as theirs,” he said.

Jaishankar credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and interest as crucial in driving these diplomatic shifts over the past decade.

Top 10 world news: Iran-Israel tensions; Indian foreign minister reacts to LAC deal with China, and more

Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar Thursday (Oct 24) pitched for reforms at established global institutions to create an equitable world order. Speaking at the BRICS Summit in Russia’s Kazan, the top Indian diplomat repeated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message of peace, saying it was not an era of war.

“How do we create a more equitable global order? First, by strengthening and expanding platforms of an independent nature, and by widening the choices in different domains and minimising undue reliance on those that can be leveraged. This is really where BRICS can make a difference for the Global South," the foreign minister said.

He added that more members should be added to the UN Security Council in both the permanent and the non-permanent categories. "Second, by reforming established institutions and mechanisms, especially the UN Security Council, in the permanent and the non-permanent categories. So too the multilateral development banks, whose working procedures are just as outdated as that of the UN," S Jaishankar added.

Indian EAM Jaishankar Reviews Bilateral Ties With Lankan Leadership

India's External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar said on Saturday (Oct 5) that there are no plans to engage in talks with Pakistan during his upcoming visit to the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting.

The EAM stressed that his trip to Pakistan was purely for the SCO summit. "Yes, I am scheduled to go to Pakistan in the middle of this month and that is for the meeting of the SCO — the heads of government meeting," he said during the Sardar Patel Lecture on Governance organised by the IC Centre for Governance in New Delhi.

Jaishankar also addressed the likely media attention surrounding the visit due to the nature of India-Pakistan relations. "I expect that there would be a lot of media interest because the very nature of the relationship is such and I think we will deal with it. But, I do want to say it will be there for a multilateral event, I mean I am not going there to discuss India-Pakistan relations. I am going there to be a good member of the SCO. Since I am a courteous and civil person, I will behave myself accordingly," the EAM said.

Jaishankar further added that this year's SCO summit is being hosted in Islamabad, as Pakistan, like India, recently joined the organisation. He added, "Normally, the Prime Minister goes to the high-level meeting, the heads of state, that’s in line with the tradition. It so happens that the meeting is taking place in Pakistan, because, like us, they are a relatively recent member."

During his speech, Jaishankar also appeared to indirectly criticise Pakistan, blaming it for the lack of progress in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).

He said, "At the moment SAARC is not moving forward, we haven't had a meeting of SAARC for a very simple reason - there is one member of SAARC who is practising cross-border terrorism at least against one more member of SAARC, maybe more... Terrorism is something which is unacceptable and despite a global view of it if one of our neighbours continues to do it - there cannot be business as usual in SAARC."

"That's the reason why the SAARC meeting has not happened in recent years - but it doesn't mean that the regional activities have stopped. In fact, in the last 5-6 years, we have seen far more regional integration in the Indian subcontinent," he added.

India remains firm on its stance of not holding bilateral talks with Pakistan until it puts an end to cross-border terrorism.
