Iran was hit by a 5.2 magnitude earthquake late Friday (June 21), sending tremors through the region. According to the reports, the earthquake hit the area near Iran’s Semnan at 5:49 local time, with the depth recorded at 10 km.This comes amid Israel and Iran engaging in a deadly war as Israel on June 13 launched Operation Rising Lion, with an aim to target Iran’s nuclear facilities, top military officials and nuclear scientists.According to Iranian local media, no casualties were reported and the damage was minimal, which triggered concerns over nuclear testing. As war between the two nations escalated, the earthquake’s proximity raised concerns for speculation over possible nuclear activity. Moreover, the quake’s timing as well as its proximity to Semnan reflects more chances of a possible nuclear testing, as it is a site known for its missile and aerospace infrastructure, raising concerns on social media after the quake.<h2>Iran’s seismologic history</h2>Seismologically, Iran is highly active due to its position on the Alpine-Himalayan seismic belt. 'YOU'RE IN DANGER': Trump warns reporters when asked about Israel-Iran war

Israel has estimated that its military operations against Iran have delayed Tehran’s potential to develop a nuclear weapon by “at least two or three years”, Israel’s foreign minister said in an interview published on Saturday (Jun 21). Gideon Saar told the German newspaper Bild that Israeli strikes, which targeted hundreds of nuclear and military sites, have shown “very significant” results. The attacks have also killed Iran’s top military commanders and nuclear scientists.&nbsp;“According to the assessment we hear, we already delayed for at least two or three years the possibility for them to have a nuclear bomb,” said Saar. “The fact that we took out those people who led and pushed the weaponisation of the nuclear program is extremely important,” he added.&nbsp;“We already achieved a lot, but we will do whatever we can do. We will not stop until we will do everything that we can do there in order to remove this threat.”&nbsp; After Israel launched drone and missile attacks on June 13, Iran launched retaliatory strikes on Israel. While Tel Aviv has claimed that Iran was pursuing nuclear weapons, Tehran has denied the claims consistently.&nbsp;Saar added that the Israeli government had not “defined regime change” in the Islamic Republic as “an objective in this war.” He added, “At least until now, we didn’t do that.”&nbsp; In a similar statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Thursday (Jun 19) that a change of Iran’s regime was not a goal of Israel’s attacks, but could be a result.&nbsp;“The matter of changing the regime or the fall of this regime is first and foremost a matter for the Iranian people. There is no substitute for this,” Netanyahu said in an interview aired on Kan public television. “And that’s why I didn’t present it as a goal. It could be a result, but it’s not a stated or formal goal that we have.”

US officials and President Trump’s allies have emphasised that the final call on whether or not to enter a war rests with him, expressing confidence in his judgment. As Trump increasingly signals potential US involvement in the ongoing conflict, some members of Congress are working to reassert their authority under the War Powers Act, according to an Al Jazeera report. But questions lie ahead. What is the legal framework that governs America’s entry into war? Can Trump commit the US to a conflict without Congress’s approval? Know what laws say that govern decisions about war in the US The War Powers Act, also known as the War Powers Resolution, was enacted by the US Congress on November 7, 1973, overriding a veto by then-President Richard Nixon. This legislation was designed to limit the president’s authority to deploy US military forces abroad without first consulting and notifying Congress. Here are 10 important points about the War Powers Act The War Powers Resolution of 1973 (also known as the War Powers Act) is a congressional resolution designed to limit the US president’s ability to initiate or escalate military actions abroad. Section 1 of the US Constitution, which sets the legislative branch of the government and outlines its duties, empowers Congress to “declare war”. Article II of the Constitution designates the president as the “commander in chief” of the armed forces. The Act was a reaction to the Vietnam War and Korean War, where presidents had escalated military actions without formal war declarations. The president must notify Congress within 48 hours of committing US armed forces to military action. In addition, armed forces may remain engaged for up to 60 days, with an additional 30-day withdrawal period, unless Congress approves further involvement or declares war. Ever since its passage, the 1973 law has been considered deeply ineffective by some critics, labelling it as more of a political tool for lawmakers to voice dissent than as a real check on power. Therefore, congressional resolutions to end unauthorised military involvement can be vetoed by the president, and overriding the veto requires a two-thirds majority vote in both the House and Senate. Every president since its passage has viewed the Act as unconstitutional, arguing it infringes on the executive’s role as Commander-in-Chief. Its practical effectiveness is debated—many presidents have complied selectively or ignored its requirements. The Act has been invoked during military interventions in Libya (2011), Iraq, and Syria, among others, sparking ongoing debate about executive vs. legislative war powers Will this Congress stop Trump from waging war with Iran? During the first term of Trump, Congress attempted to limit his war powers for the first time since the Vietnam War. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) confirmed on Thursday (June 19) that Iran fired cluster bombs in response to an increase in civilian casualties. The attacks with scattered small bombs mark the first use of cluster munitions in the ongoing conflicts between Iran and Israel.The Israeli military reported that a missile fired from Iran on June 19 exploded about 7 kilometres above ground, releasing around 20 submunitions over an 8-kilometre area in central Israel. These unguided munitions fall to the ground and are designed to explode on impact.“They are egregious weapons with their wide-area destruction, especially if used in a civilian populated area and could add to the unexploded ordnance left over from conflicts,” said Daryl Kimball, executive director of the Arms Control Association.<h2>What are cluster bombs?</h2>According to a report in NDTV, the cluster bomb is designed in a way that releases smaller bombs or “submunitions” covering wider areas. This bomb opens mid-air and is scattered into multiple smaller explosives across a broad target zone, instead of detonating in a single explosion.As per the HT report, cluster munitions can scatter smaller bombs over a wide area, posing long-term risks to civilians, as some take a longer time to detonate. Unexploded cluster bombs can cause casualties and harm unintended targets long after the conflict ends, and their removal is often costly and challenging.These bombs lack precision in targeting and can be affected by environmental factors like weather, potentially hitting unintended areas beyond the intended military target.<h2>When were cluster bombs first used?</h2>The cluster munitions were first used during World War II. In addition, a large number of stockpiled cluster munitions were designed during the Cold War to destroy multiple military targets scattered over a wide area, such as tanks or to kill or injure soldiers, according to the International Committee of the Red Cross.Earlier in March 2025, Ukraine’s eastern region of Dobropillia was attacked by Russia with cluster bombs targeting the centre of the town, which claimed the lives of 11 people, injuring 40.Several media reports confirm that the Convention on Cluster Munitions was established in 2008 to prohibit the use, production, transfer and stockpiling of cluster munitions. It was signed by 123 nations, excluding Russia, Ukraine, and the United States. Through this convention, it also required members to destroy existing stockpiles of cluster munitions. &nbsp;&nbsp;

As tensions escalate between Israel and Iran, an age-old pizza theory has resurfaced. Open sources on the internet are being used to track the pizza outlet around the Pentagon. Now, along with a lot of classified files, the administrative building of the US Department of Defense (DoD) has come under the scanner for a certain theory. The ‘Pentagon Pizza Index’ – this is believed to indicate that a conflict or a major activity is either underway or about to happen. But, how does this add up? According to the data shared, four pizza outlets: We, The Pizza, Domino’s Pizza, District Pizza Palace and Extreme Pizza showed an unusual surge in orders. It also happens to be the same day Israel unleashed aerial strikes on Iran. Now, that's either a sheer coincidence or probably food for thought. The Home Front Command of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that Iran launched at least one ballistic missile carrying a cluster bomb warhead at central Israel on Thursday after the Israel Fire and Rescue Authority sent out an urgent message saying that some of the miniature warheads have landed but have not exploded. As the Israel–Iran conflict dominates global headlines, another war—now over 1,200 days old—continues to quietly erode Europe’s economic resilience. The prolonged Russia–Ukraine war, once considered a distant geopolitical challenge, has morphed into a domestic economic burden for major European economies.&nbsp;&nbsp;Germany, long the industrial powerhouse of the continent, is now grappling with the fallout of cutting its energy ties with Moscow.&nbsp;According to data cited by Reuters, Germany’s GDP grew just 0.4 per cent in the first quarter of 2025, while industrial production declined 0.2 per cent in March year-on-year, and energy-intensive industries shrank 2.3 per cent. Germany’s annual GDP forecast for 2025 stands at 0.0 per cent, with a modest recovery to 0.7 per cent in 2026, as per projections from the country’s Federal Statistical Office.<h2>The gas that powered Germany’s factories</h2>While Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has claimed that “the German economy is on the brink of recession,” as quoted by Reuters, the statement—though politically loaded—touches on an underlying truth. Europe’s competitiveness for decades had leaned heavily on cheap Russian pipeline gas. That is no longer an option.&nbsp;Since the Ukraine war began, Europe has rapidly shifted to alternate supplies, notably liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States and Qatar. However, LNG has proven costlier, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which lack the financial muscle to secure long-term supply contracts, as reported by Reuters and Bloomberg.&nbsp;Lawmakers in Germany have repeatedly warned that SMEs—considered the backbone of the nation’s economy—face disproportionately higher risks from sustained energy inflation.<h2>Energy shock beyond Germany</h2>The strain isn’t limited to Germany. Bloomberg reports that Austria, Hungary and Slovakia, which were heavily reliant on Russian crude and gas, are now facing bottlenecks in energy supply and manufacturing. All three nations have seen a decline in industrial activity since early 2023, based on EU-wide trade and production data.&nbsp; To respond, the European Central Bank has reduced borrowing costs to support economic activity, especially in energy-intensive sectors, as noted in a recent ECB policy brief reviewed by Reuters.<h2>Chemical, metal and auto sectors under strain</h2>Industries heavily dependent on a consistent energy supply, such as chemicals, metals and automobiles, are the hardest hit. German automaker Volkswagen has reportedly scaled down operations in certain facilities, citing high energy costs, as per Reuters.&nbsp; However, the ripple effect is deeper in the supply chain. Component manufacturers and mid-sized suppliers—often family-owned and operating on tight margins—are facing existential threats, according to analysis by the IFO Institute for Economic Research.<h2>Green energy goals face headwinds</h2>Europe’s long-term plan to pivot towards renewable energy is also encountering challenges. The green transition—while a strategic necessity—is proving expensive and politically difficult.&nbsp; As quoted by Bloomberg, analysts say delayed infrastructure, limited private investment, and regulatory uncertainty have slowed momentum. This is weakening the EU’s position against energy-rich and manufacturing-competitive economies like the United States and China.<h2>Strategic de-industrialisation?</h2>Economists now warn of a larger trend: a slow but steady de-industrialisation of Europe. As per a recent Reuters analysis, energy-intensive sectors are relocating production or downsizing operations, risking long-term competitiveness.<h2>A warning from Ukraine’s frontlines</h2>The economic fallout from the Ukraine war illustrates a global truth: regional conflicts can reshape global trade, disrupt domestic industry, and upend national economic models.&nbsp; For Europe, the decision to wean itself off Russian gas was a moral and strategic necessity. Under Operation Sindhu, 110 Indian students have returned to the capital, New Delhi, from Iran after a journey that spanned three days. The situation between Israel and Iran is currently hostile and not conducive for the students to continue pursuing their degrees. West Asia, already a region defined by volatility and longstanding tensions, has once again been thrust into the international spotlight following the latest escalation in the Israel-Iran conflict.&nbsp; On June 13, 2025, Israel launched Operation Rising Lion, a targeted military strike aimed at neutralising Iran's nuclear sites and weakening its regional military dominance.&nbsp; The operation resulted in the deaths of several top Iranian military commanders, including General Mohammad Bagheri, General Hossein Salami, and General Amir Ali Hajizadeh—key figures overseeing Iran's armed forces, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and its ballistic missile program, respectively.<h2>A new chapter in the Israel-Iran conflict</h2>This military operation represents one of the most significant confrontations between Israel and Iran in decades. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu justified the action as a necessary step to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, which Israel views as an “existential threat”.&nbsp; The timing of the strikes also follows a series of escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, particularly since the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on Israel. Tehran’s support for militant proxies such as Hezbollah and Hamas has long been a thorn in Israel’s side.&nbsp;Additionally, Iran lost an important ally in Syria with the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime in December 2024, further weakening its regional influence. While Israel's actions have left Tehran reeling, it is uncertain whether the latest strikes will ignite widespread domestic unrest that could force a change in government. Although there have been some protests in Iran, they are primarily in response to Israeli aggression, rather than a direct challenge to the ruling regime.<h2>The geopolitical repercussions in the region</h2>Beyond the immediate consequences for Israel and Iran, the fallout from Operation Rising Lion is being felt throughout West Asia. Iran's nuclear ambitions have long been a source of anxiety for its Sunni Arab neighbours, who fear that a nuclear-capable Iran would lead to a regional arms race, with countries like Saudi Arabia likely to pursue their own nuclear weapons programmes.&nbsp; The stakes are high, and Israel’s strike has eased some of these concerns by weakening Iran’s nuclear capabilities, at least for the time being. However, the immediate reaction in the Gulf has been one of condemnation. Countries like Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Oman have voiced opposition to Israel’s actions, leaving them in a precarious position.&nbsp; On one hand, Iran and its proxy forces have been a challenge to regional stability, but on the other, Iran has also acted as a counterbalance to Israel’s military dominance in the region. With Israel’s growing influence and a potential shift in US policy under President Donald Trump, the Gulf states are now forced to reconsider their relationships with both Israel and Iran.Former Indian diplomat Mahesh Sachdev notes that the Sunni Arab world harbours little affection for either Israel or Iran. A stronger, more assertive Israel could potentially force Gulf states to normalise ties with the Jewish state under the framework of the 2020 Abraham Accords, a peace agreement that had already begun to reshape the regional diplomatic landscape.India, which has strong ties with both Israel and Iran, finds itself in a delicate position as it watches the unfolding events with cautious attention.<h2>India's delicate balancing act</h2>India has historically treaded carefully when it comes to West Asia, largely due to its complex relations with both Israel and Iran.&nbsp; On one hand, India shares “civilisational ties” with Iran, and the two countries have had a longstanding partnership on matters of energy, trade, and regional connectivity. Iran has also been an important energy partner for India, although the country ceased importing oil from Iran under US sanctions imposed during the Trump administration. On the other hand, India has been a steadfast partner of Israel, particularly since formal diplomatic ties were established in 1992. The relationship has flourished across various sectors, including defence, agriculture, and technology.&nbsp;Israel has been a key supplier of advanced military equipment to India, including drones and missiles, which have been used in operations against Pakistan, particularly during the 2019 Operation Sindoor.India's position on the Iran-Israel conflict is shaped not only by its strong bilateral ties with both nations but also by the need to safeguard its interests in the wider Gulf region. Approximately 9 million Indians live and work in the Gulf states, making the safety and security of the expatriate community a priority. Furthermore, the region plays a vital role in India's energy supply, particularly in terms of oil and natural gas.India’s foreign policy is aligned closely with the Gulf states’ concerns about Iran, especially as Tehran has continued to exert its influence through proxy groups in Lebanon (Hezbollah), Syria, and Iraq.&nbsp; The recent escalation has only deepened India’s commitment to its strategic relationship with Israel, despite the Gulf states’ condemnation of Israel’s actions.<h2>The IMEC and its delays</h2>India’s ambitions for regional connectivity are heavily tied to the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), which was announced in 2023.&nbsp;The project, which seeks to connect South Asia, West Asia, and Europe through a comprehensive network of transport, renewable energy, and digital infrastructure, is seen as a game-changer for India’s trade and economic prospects. The IMEC project was born out of the vision for peace and cooperation in the region following the Abraham Accords and the creation of the Israel-India-US-UAE (I2U2) grouping.&nbsp; However, the current crisis has cast a shadow over the project’s implementation. The ongoing conflict has created additional uncertainty, delaying key infrastructure developments and complicating logistics in the region.&nbsp;Shipping routes through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, critical for global trade, have been disrupted by ongoing threats from Iranian-backed Houthi rebels, forcing many ships to take longer routes and incur higher costs.Although the IMEC project remains a priority for India, the new geopolitical risks introduced by Israel’s strikes on Iran may cause delays and potentially force a reevaluation of its timeline.<h2>Oil, trade, and markets</h2>The Israel-Iran conflict has already had a significant impact on global markets, particularly oil prices. As tensions rose, Brent crude oil prices surged by 7 per cent, hitting $75 per barrel, with analysts predicting a potential spike above $100 per barrel if the conflict escalates further.&nbsp; The surge in oil prices has ripple effects across the global economy, as higher energy costs lead to increased prices for everything from consumer goods to air travel.West Asia is a major hub for global oil production and maritime trade, and any disruption to shipping routes, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz (which handles a quarter of the world’s oil trade), could have far-reaching consequences.&nbsp;Iran had recently threatened to block the strait, and although this remains unlikely, analysts are monitoring the situation closely.Rising oil prices are also expected to increase shipping insurance premiums, which will ultimately be passed on to consumers.&nbsp; The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned that every 10 per cent increase in oil prices could raise inflation in advanced economies by 0.4 percentage points, adding to the financial strain on consumers and businesses. The disruptions in maritime trade are already being felt, as the Houthi rebels’ attacks have forced many vessels to take longer routes, increasing travel times and costs.&nbsp; This not only delays shipments but also affects global supply chains, which are already fragile due to other geopolitical factors such as the ongoing war in Ukraine. The sudden escalation also rattled the markets around the world, with the S&amp;P 500 falling 1.1 per cent, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropping 1.8 per cent, and European and Asian indices mirroring these declines. Volatility spiked as the VIX—often called the market’s “fear gauge”—surged past the critical 20-point anxiety threshold.Investors also flocked to safe-haven assets such as gold and the US dollar, which typically perform well during crises. Spot gold was up 0.38 per cent, while gold futures for August delivery gained 0.41 per cent, following respective June 13 increases of 1.4 per cent and 1.5 per cent. The US dollar index climbed 0.3 per cent on June 13 and was up another 0.1 per cent by June 16 morning, outperforming other traditional safe currencies like the Swiss franc and Japanese yen.The escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict has triggered a volatile mix of geopolitical, economic, and energy market concerns. The ongoing uncertainty in the region is a significant source of risk for global trade and oil markets and could further complicate India's strategic initiatives in West Asia, including the IMEC project.India's ability to navigate this complex situation, balancing its interests with Israel and Iran while safeguarding its goals, will be crucial in shaping the future of West Asia and South Asia's economic landscape.&nbsp; The road ahead remains fraught with challenges, but it is clear that the geopolitical dynamics of this conflict will continue to reverberate across the global economy for the foreseeable future.

The conflict has already caused disruptions in global trade, with rising oil prices and shipping delays. While the immediate impact is significant, the full extent of its impact on global markets, particularly oil and trade, will depend on the duration and scope of the confrontation.

India's delicate balancing act India has historically treaded carefully when it comes to West Asia, largely due to its complex relations with both Israel and Iran. On one hand, India shares “civilisational ties” with Iran, and the two countries have had a longstanding partnership on matters of energy, trade, and regional connectivity. Iran has also been an important energy partner for India, although the country ceased importing oil from Iran under US sanctions imposed during the Trump administration. On the other hand, India has been a steadfast partner of Israel, particularly since formal diplomatic ties were established in 1992. The relationship has flourished across various sectors, including defence, agriculture, and technology. Israel has been a key supplier of advanced military equipment to India, including drones and missiles, which have been used in operations against Pakistan, particularly during the 2019 Operation Sindoor. India's position on the Iran-Israel conflict is shaped not only by its strong bilateral ties with both nations but also by the need to safeguard its interests in the wider Gulf region. Approximately 9 million Indians live and work in the Gulf states, making the safety and security of the expatriate community a priority. Furthermore, the region plays a vital role in India's energy supply, particularly in terms of oil and natural gas. India’s foreign policy is aligned closely with the Gulf states’ concerns about Iran, especially as Tehran has continued to exert its influence through proxy groups in Lebanon (Hezbollah), Syria, and Iraq. The recent escalation has only deepened India’s commitment to its strategic relationship with Israel, despite the Gulf states’ condemnation of Israel’s actions. The IMEC and its delays India’s ambitions for regional connectivity are heavily tied to the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), which was announced in 2023. The project, which seeks to connect South Asia, West Asia, and Europe through a comprehensive network of transport, renewable energy, and digital infrastructure, is seen as a game-changer for India’s trade and economic prospects. The IMEC project was born out of the vision for peace and cooperation in the region following the Abraham Accords and the creation of the Israel-India-US-UAE (I2U2) grouping. However, the current crisis has cast a shadow over the project’s implementation. The ongoing conflict has created additional uncertainty, delaying key infrastructure developments and complicating logistics in the region. Shipping routes through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, critical for global trade, have been disrupted by ongoing threats from Iranian-backed Houthi rebels, forcing many ships to take longer routes and incur higher costs. Although the IMEC project remains a priority for India, the new geopolitical risks introduced by Israel’s strikes on Iran may cause delays and potentially force a reevaluation of its timeline. Oil, trade, and markets The Israel-Iran conflict has already had a significant impact on global markets, particularly oil prices. As tensions rose, Brent crude oil prices surged by 7 per cent, hitting $75 per barrel, with analysts predicting a potential spike above $100 per barrel if the conflict escalates further. The surge in oil prices has ripple effects across the global economy, as higher energy costs lead to increased prices for everything from consumer goods to air travel. West Asia is a major hub for global oil production and maritime trade, and any disruption to shipping routes, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz (which handles a quarter of the world’s oil trade), could have far-reaching consequences. Iran had recently threatened to block the strait, and although this remains unlikely, analysts are monitoring the situation closely. Rising oil prices are also expected to increase shipping insurance premiums, which will ultimately be passed on to consumers. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has warned that every 10 per cent increase in oil prices could raise inflation in advanced economies by 0.4 percentage points, adding to the financial strain on consumers and businesses. The disruptions in maritime trade are already being felt, as the Houthi rebels’ attacks have forced many vessels to take longer routes, increasing travel times and costs. This not only delays shipments but also affects global supply chains, which are already fragile due to other geopolitical factors such as the ongoing war in Ukraine. The sudden escalation also rattled the markets around the world, with the S&P 500 falling 1.1 per cent, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropping 1.8 per cent, and European and Asian indices mirroring these declines. Volatility spiked as the VIX—often called the market’s “fear gauge”—surged past the critical 20-point anxiety threshold. Investors also flocked to safe-haven assets such as gold and the US dollar, which typically perform well during crises. Spot gold was up 0.38 per cent, while gold futures for August delivery gained 0.41 per cent, following respective June 13 increases of 1.4 per cent and 1.5 per cent. The US dollar index climbed 0.3 per cent on June 13 and was up another 0.1 per cent by June 16 morning, outperforming other traditional safe currencies like the Swiss franc and Japanese yen. The escalation of the Israel-Iran conflict has triggered a volatile mix of geopolitical, economic, and energy market concerns. The ongoing uncertainty in the region is a significant source of risk for global trade and oil markets and could further complicate India's strategic initiatives in West Asia, including the IMEC project. India's ability to navigate this complex situation, balancing its interests with Israel and Iran while safeguarding its goals, will be crucial in shaping the future of West Asia and South Asia's economic landscape. The road ahead remains fraught with challenges, but it is clear that the geopolitical dynamics of this conflict will continue to reverberate across the global economy for the foreseeable future.

The conflict has already caused disruptions in global trade, with rising oil prices and shipping delays. While the immediate impact is significant, the full extent of its impact on global markets, particularly oil and trade, will depend on the duration and scope of the confrontation.

Third attack on Israel would cripple Iran's economy, says Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledged on Sunday to take a "firm" stand against Hezbollah's actions and to block any attempts by the group to rearm, according to a statement from his office, while visiting the northern border with Lebanon.

Addressing the soldiers stationed at the border, Netanyahu said, "I want to be clear: with or without an agreement, the key to restoring peace and security in the north, the key to bringing our northern residents back home safely, is first and foremost to push Hezbollah back beyond the Litani River, secondly to target any attempt to rearm, and thirdly to respond firmly to any action taken against us."

In a separate development, on Sunday, protesters in Tehran burned Israeli and US flags outside the former American embassy, commemorating the 1979 hostage crisis, a pivotal event in US-Iran relations. The US military announced on Saturday that American B-52 bombers had arrived in the Middle East as part of a military reinforcement to caution Iran.

Meanwhile, Iran’s president commented on a possible ceasefire between its allies and Israel on Sunday, saying that it "could influence" Tehran’s reaction to recent Israeli attacks on Iranian military positions.

"If they (the Israelis) reconsider their behaviour, accept a ceasefire and stop massacring the oppressed and innocent people of the region, it could affect the intensity and type of our response," Masoud Pezeshkian stated, as reported by IRNA, Iran's state news agency. He said that Iran "will not leave unanswered any aggression against its sovereignty and security."

Netanyahu vows ‘firm’ response to Hezbollah attacks; Iran says won’t leave Israeli aggression ‘unanswered’

The United States announced on Sunday (Oct) 13 that it will deploy an advanced anti-missile system to Israel, along with US troops to operate it, to strengthen the country’s air defences following Iranian attacks earlier this month.

The United States announced on Sunday (Oct) 13 that it will deploy an advanced anti-missile system to Israel, along with US troops to operate it, to strengthen the country’s air defences following Iranian attacks earlier this month. President Joe Biden asked Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin to authorise "the deployment of a Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery and associated crew of US military personnel" to Israel. "The THAAD Battery will augment Israel's integrated air defence system. This action underscores the United States' ironclad commitment to the defence of Israel, and to defend Americans in Israel, from any further ballistic missile attacks by Iran," said Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder in a statement on Sunday. This is not the first time the US has deployed THAAD to Israel, having previously done so in 2019 during joint exercises and following the Hamas-led attack on Israel on 7 October 2023, according to the statement. US to deploy anti-missile system THAAD in Israel to ‘defend Americans’ against future Iranian attacks

U.S. officials believe Israel has narrowed down targets in its potential response to Iran's attack this month to military and energy infrastructure,&nbsp;NBC&nbsp;reported on Saturday.

The Middle East remains on high alert for further escalation in a year of war as Israel battles Iran-backed groups Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in Gaza. Tehran, a major oil producer, has threatened Israel with severe consequences if the Islamic Republic is attacked.

Israel has repeatedly said it will respond to Iran's missile barrage on Oct. 1, which was launched in retaliation for Israel's military operations in Gaza and Lebanon and the killings of a string of Hamas and Hezbollah leaders.

There is no indication that Israel will target nuclear facilities or carry out assassinations, the&nbsp;NBC&nbsp;report said, citing unnamed U.S. officials and adding that Israel has not made final decisions about how and when to act.

U.S. and Israeli officials said a response could come during the current Yom Kippur holiday, according to the report.

U.S. officials believe Israel has narrowed down targets in its potential response to Iran's attack this month to military and energy infrastructure, NBC reported on Saturday. There is no indication that Israel will target nuclear facilities or carry out assassinations, the NBC report said, citing unnamed U.S. officials and adding that Israel has not made final decisions about how and when to act. U.S. and Israeli officials said a response could come during the current Yom Kippur holiday, according to the report. Israeli officials have not publicly commented on the report.
