<p>"I’m surprised this administration finds it acceptable to celebrate Diwali, when their support of the current atrocities against Palestinians represent(s) the exact opposite of what this holiday means to many of us." She added: "I refuse any invitation from an institution that supports the collective punishment of a trapped civilian population – 50 per cent of whom are children."</p>

<p>Diwali is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists all across the world in the honour of Lord Ram's return to his birthplace Ayodhya 20 days after he defeated demon king Ravana who had abducted his wife Sita, the princess of Mithila. Poet Rupi Kaur declines invite to White House's Diwali celebrations amid Israel-Hamas war

<p>A video of a former IDF soldier was shared on social media in which he was seen supporting the Palestinians amid the escalating Israel-Hamas war. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the video, the former IDF soldier – identified as Leif Manson – was seen carrying a Palestinian flag and expressing his disappointment with Israel.</p>

<p>In the video, the former soldier said, “I am probably the only person with a Palestinian flag and I am also the only Israeli citizen here. Around, 40 years ago I was a soldier in the IDF. At that time, everybody wanted a peace settlement with Egypt to be made and the next step was to have peace with the Palestinians.”</p>

<p>He further spoke about the attempted assassination of Bassam Shakaa in 1980, in which the Palestinian leader lost both his legs.</p>

<p>The female border police officer, Elisheva Rose Ida Lubin, was pronounced dead after she was admitted to a hospital in critical condition. Another police officer who was with the deceased suffered moderate injuries, Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported.</p>

<p>The suspected attacker was later shot dead, police said.</p>

<p>"A terrorist armed with a knife arrived at Shalem police station and stabbed a female soldier... border police forces neutralised the terrorist by shooting," police said in a statement.</p>

<p>The assailant was a resident of the east Jerusalem neighbourhood of Issawiya. The police said that "another suspect" was arrested near the scene of the attack.</p>

US says it shares goals with India to prevent spreading of Israel-Hamas war

<p>The US Secretary of State Antony Blinken landed in Israel's Tel Aviv on Friday (Nov 3) in what is his second trip to West Asia this week, days after his much-criticised&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/shuttle-diplomacy-blinken-meets-jordanian-king-palestinian-president-abbas-in-amman-646310">shuttle diplomacy</a>&nbsp;in the region failed to yield geopolitical results aimed towards a purported&nbsp;de-escalation of Israel-Hamas war and access to&nbsp;humanitarian aid into Gaza Strip.</p>

<p>Blinken&nbsp;is expected to push the Israeli government for "humanitarian pauses" in its assault on Gaza amid Biden administration's purported efforts for the release of Hamas-held hostages.</p>

<p>While attack by the Hamas terrorists led to the brutal killings of more than 1,400 Israelis, mostly civilians, the retaliatory action by Israel has killed&nbsp;more than 8,500 people, two-thirds of them women and children, according to the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry.</p>

<h2><strong>Antony Blinken's second West Asia visit in less than three weeks</strong></h2>

<p>Blinken's second wartime visit to West Asia is aimed at seeking&nbsp;"urgent mechanisms" to reduce regional tensions over the Israel-Hamas war.</p>

<p>"Secretary Blinken will travel to Israel on Friday for meetings with members of the Israeli government, and then will make other stops in the region," State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said.</p>

<p>Antony Blinken's previous visit to the region concluded on October 15, in what came to be known as "shuttle diplomacy" for the sheer number of&nbsp;trips and meetings the US Secretary of State had with the leaders of a host of countries, including Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Egypt.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The US diplomat made&nbsp;over a dozen stops in Jordan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt and back in Israel.</p>

<p>Blinken's shuttle diplomacy failed to claim even partial success.</p>

<p>While the war between Israel and Hamas continues to rage, leading to multiple crises in the blockaded Palestinian region, the humanitarian aid inside Gaza via Egypt's Rafah crossing went over two weeks after the conflict first began in the region.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But the biggest diplomatic setback for the Biden administration came when US President Joe Biden's West Asia visit was forced to be cut down to only Israel. The development occurred after Jordan unilaterally called off&nbsp;a four-way summit between Joe Biden and the&nbsp;leaders of&nbsp;Amman, Cairo and Ramallah—the de-facto administrative capital of Palestine Authority.</p>

<p>Jordan called off the summit immediately after Israel was blamed for an attack on an hospital in Gaza but Tel Aviv&nbsp;denied any role and blamed a 'misfired' rocket by Islamic Jehad for the hundreds of casualties in the incident.&nbsp;<br />

The death toll at the hospital was also described as "exaggerated" by the Western intelligence agencies. However, the four-way leaders' summit was called off despite Biden administration's&nbsp;deployment of its Secretary of State Antony Blinken for diplomatic engagements in the region in the immediate days following the beginning of the war between Israel and Hamas.</p>

<p>The development was described as a sign of Washington's waning political capital in the region.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The Jordanian government’s cancellation of President Biden’s trip serves as a glaring indicator of the United States’ waning political capital in the Middle East," Raed Jarrar, Advocacy Director at Washington-based Democracy For The Arab World Now (DAWN) non-profit, had told WION.</p>

<p>Biden and King Abdullah II "discussed urgent mechanisms to stem violence, calm rhetoric, and reduce regional tensions," a White House statement said.</p>

<p>It added that the two leaders "agreed that it is critical to ensure that Palestinians are not forcibly displaced outside of Gaza" and that Biden had "confirmed unwavering US support for Jordan and His Majesty's leadership."</p>

<p>Blinken has called upon a&nbsp;potentially "revitalised" Palestinian Authority to retake the control of Gaza if Israel succeeds in its goal of toppling Hamas. But for that, regional partners&nbsp;— including Qatar which hosts a number of Hamas leaders designated as terrorists by the West&nbsp;— must come on-board.</p>

<p>"At some point, what would make the most sense would be for an effective and revitalised Palestinian Authority to have governance and ultimately security responsibility for Gaza," Blinken told a Senate hearing on October 31.</p>

<p>"Whether you can get there in one step is a big question that we have to look at. And if you can’t, then there are other temporary arrangements that may involve a number of other countries in the region," Blinken said. "It may involve international agencies that would help provide for both security and governance."<br />

The UN Security Council is now in a perpetual logjam state as the US, Russia and China display their peculiarly tangential and frequently conflicting positions best illustrated by symbolic planets in the Hindu astrological chart. The vote in the General Assembly always mattered little compared to the veto in the Security Council, but what is happening now in West Asia should make us look up the organisation's peacekeeping role, which I did. <p>To cut the long story short, the UN Peacekeeping actually began in 1948 precisely where all the bloody action is now to police a ceasefire between Arabs and Israelis. Since then it has been all over the planet mostly to police ceasefires as colonial exploitation gave way to ethnic strifes and civil wars bearing the indelible marks of a has-been imperialism turning into a never-say-die shadow colonialism.</p>

<p>The UN officially says its peacekeeper role changed after the end of the Cold War circa 1991 (Has it, really?). It has been to places like the former Yugoslavia, Angola, and Somalia and lists among the Peacekeeping Forces' tasks an objective to "stabilise the security situation". And it also says with an official straight face: "The nature of conflicts also changed over the years. UN Peacekeeping, originally developed as a means of dealing with inter-State conflict, was increasingly being applied to intra-state conflicts and civil wars."</p>

<p>I want to ask how one would describe the current conflict in Palestine. It is nothing but a prolonged civil war between two national communities that claim stakes to the same ancient homeland - divided by religion, language and heritage but not by territory. A two-state solution widely seen as the right way out implies that geographically intertwined nation-states are at war. The Israel-Hamas conflict has both inter-State and intra-state characteristics. Either way, the UN has to play some sort of a peacekeeping role that goes beyond the policing of a ceasefire that is simply not happening.</p>

<p>Along with hundreds of kids and civilians, we also see irony dying a thousand deaths at Gaza in a world in which a veto-empowered Russia can bomb Ukraine and kill civilians in an ostensible "de-Nazification" act that enlists support from a private army named after a Nazi favourite composer, Wagner!&nbsp;</p>

<p>That digression to Ukraine is just a drone's eye view of the planet to show that we are now seeing a world in which geopolitics has become a theatre of the absurd. It would be funny were it not for the tragic destruction and deaths that we are witnessing day after day in Gaza. If there was ever a need to airdrop powerful military support to keep the peace, it is now and the place is exactly where it all began in 1948.</p>

<p>But who will bell the cat? US President Joe Biden and Russian strongman Vladimir Putin are now two of a kind. China remains mysteriously torn between being a stealthy expansionist and a wannabe deal-maker. France is fighting its own internal monsters like a latter-day Don Quixote. The answer is indeed blowing in the wind.</p>

Missing in action: As Gaza burns, a failing UN needs Dylan's wake-up call

<p>Egypt will treat badly wounded Palestinians after letting them into the country through the Rafah crossing, AFP reported Wednesday (Nov 1).</p>

<p>The announcement from Egypt’s medical and security forces came Tuesday as Israel continues pounding Gaza with full force, which has so far resulted in the death of more than 8,500 people, including 3,500 children.</p>

<p>The border authority in Hamas-ruled Gaza earlier said that Egypt has allowed accommodating at least 81 of the most badly wounded Palestinians.&nbsp;</p>

<p>All of them will cross into Egypt through Rafah starting Wednesday, the only passage not controlled by Israel.</p>

<h2><strong>Egypt to build special field hospital&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>As per media reports, Egypt is building a special field hospital, with an area of 1,300 square metres (about 14,000 square feet), where these Palestinians will be taken care of.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The hospital is being built in the city of Sheikh Zuweid in northern Sinai, about 15 kilometres (nine miles) from Rafah.</p>

<p>Hamas, in a separate statement, claimed more than 400 people had died in the Jabalia strikes, although it could not be verified by WION independently.</p>
