“I was with Israelis, and there were guards all the time. The Jews who were with me were treated more harshly. Sometimes they were beaten with electrical cables,” said the Thai national, as quoted by Times of Israel.&nbsp;

He said the compound where they were held was “quite large”.

He recalled how he would walk around counting steps to pass the time, Israeli media quoted him as saying. “One pita a day. Sometimes there were cans of tuna that the four of us shared,” he said, adding that there was very little food for the hostages to eat.

He added, “Sometimes there was a piece of cheese. Once, they let us shower.”

Two more Thai workers were set free on Tuesday (Nov 28), bringing the total number of Thai nationals released to 23.

“I went around to speak to various countries who can connect with the Hamas group to explain that the Thai workers are innocent, they are not involved in politics, they are not part of anyone's conflict, and they probably don't even know how the situation came to be, who's fighting with whom. They were there to earn a living,” the Thai FM told Reuters.&nbsp;

Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen and Thai minister visited 17 freed Thai hostages at the medical centre where they were being treated upon their release.

For the past two days, new infections have been dropping, with major hotspots&nbsp; Maharashtra, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh reporting a fall in new cases.

The number of active cases have&nbsp;declined as well. It has fallen by 30,000. For the first time in 61 days, India has reported a decline in active cases. It now stands at 3.7 million, almost 20 million people have recovered.

However, there is no fall in the number of fatalities since once again India has reported almost 4,000 deaths in a day.

The pandemic has killed close to 250,000 people in India.&nbsp;The drop in positive cases is a promising sign.&nbsp;However, it cannot be said India has touched the peak. The country's positivity rate remains around 21 per cent, which means more than one out of five people are testing positive.

India needs to bring down the positivity rate to less than five per cent. Only then&nbsp;it will have the second wave be under control.

India needs to test more. On Sunday, India had conducted just 1.47 million tests which is the lowest this month. Monday was an improvement with over 1.8 million tests conducted in the last 24 hours.

In the past two weeks, India has conducted more than 1.9 million tests in a day multiple times. However, the vaccination curve has peaked. The vaccinations were on a high in April.

India has been administering close to two million doses a day with over 170 million shots given so far and just 2.7 per cent of India's population has got both shots.

Maharashtra has stopped vaccination for those above 18. The state says it will only inoculate those above 45 years of age because it does not have enough doses even as the Centre has asked state governments to prioritise those waiting for their second jab.

Freed hostage says she met Hamas chief Sinwar in Gaza, asked how he wasn't 'ashamed' of himself

Seventy-eight-year-old Ruthy Munder was among the hostages who were released by Hamas, a Palestine-based group that has been designated&nbsp;a terrorist organisation by many nations including the US and the UK. Sky News posted a video crediting Channel 13 News Israel, in which Munder can be heard saying that she spent the entirety of her time with her daughter, Keren, and grandson, Ohad Munder-Zichri. She also said that Ohad celebrated his ninth birthday in captivity.

Munder was seen in a video released by the Israeli government on Saturday (Nov 25) of those who were released from captivity in Gaza on Friday.

Hamas has released around 60 Israeli women and children as part of the deal which took effect on Friday. They have also released several other foreign nationals. In return, Israel freed Palestinian detainees from prisons.

But more than 160 other hostages taken in the Hamas attacks on October 7 are still held in the Gaza Strip. Dozens have even gone missing.&nbsp;

<h2>'Poor nutrition and solitary confinement'&nbsp;</h2>

Israeli hostages have not spoken directly to the media about the conditions they were kept in. The hospitals have been asked to not reveal any details about the hostages and their experiences.&nbsp;

But some details are emerging. As quoted by the news agency AFP, Ronit Zaidenstein, head of the medical team at Shamir Medical Centre where 17 released Thai nationals were treated, said they had been fed "very unnutritious food" in captivity.&nbsp;

"The people who came to us lost a significant amount of their body weight in such a short time - 10 per cent or more."&nbsp;

Margarita Mashavi, a doctor at Wolfson Medical Centre, which is one of the main facilities caring for freed hostages, said those she spoke to described being kept several stories underground. The remarks came in an interview which is now taken offline.

"They didn't give them light. They gave it to them for only two hours," she was quoted as saying by the Ynet news site on Monday.&nbsp;

The patient said her meals consisted of "rice, canned hummus and fava beans, and sometimes salted cheese with pita, but not more than that. No fruit, no vegetables, no eggs," she said.&nbsp;

"Even when they asked for a pencil or pen to write in order to pass the time, the Hamas men didn't allow it because they were afraid they would transmit information in writing, so they were without television or reading, and therefore passed the time only in conversation with one another," Mashavi said.&nbsp;

Darkness, hunger & poor sanitation: Hamas kept Israeli hostages in ‘horrible conditions’

Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur and owner of social media platform X (formerly Twitter) has said that he wants to 'help' destroy Hamas. Musk is currently in Israel, just weeks after he received flak from civil rights group which said that he amplified antisemitism on X. Musk is due to discuss combating antisemitism in the online world. He is also likely to comment on Starlink satellite service in Gaza and AI safety.

Musk said one of the challenges in tackling anti-semitism was "ultimately stopping the propaganda that is convincing people to engage in, you know, murder", as quoted by Yahoo News.

In an online chat with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, who said that Hamas must be destroyed, Musk said: "There's no choice".

Monday (November 27) was the last day of four-day truce brokered between Israel and Hamas. Talks were on to further extend it, after which Qatar had&nbsp;announced that the truce has been extended by two more days.

On Sunday, Hamas released 17 of the hostages in its custody. The released prisoners included a 4-year-old Israeli-American girl. Hamas has till now, released 58 prisoners. Israel in exchange, has freed 117 Palestinian prisoners.

<h2>Open to extending truce, says Israel</h2>

Israel meanwhile, said on Monday that it was open to extending the four-day truce with Hamas in case the group continues to release hostages. There is mounting international pressure to extend the pause in fighting.

Qatar says dozens of Israeli hostages have gone missing in Gaza

The man accused of shooting and injuring three university students of Palestinian descent in the US city of Burlington, Vermont over the weekend pleaded not guilty to attempted murder charges on Monday (Nov 27).

The suspect, identified as 48-year-old Jason J Eaton, was arrested on Sunday, a day after the attack and appeared in court in Burlington where the judge had also ordered him to remain held without bond.

The shooting, which took place on a street near the University of Vermont, is being seen as a suspected “hate-motivated crime” by the police.

<h2>About the condition of victims</h2>

The three friends were identified in court documents as Hisham Awartani, Tahseen Aliahmad and Kinnan Abdalhamid, all aged 20. They all remain&nbsp;under medical care&nbsp;with gunshot wounds to the spine, chest and buttocks, respectively.&nbsp;

Two are in stable condition while the third sustained more serious injuries, as per officials.&nbsp;

The court documents also said two out of the three who were shot recounted they were wearing keffiyehs – the traditional black and white Palestinian scarf – and one of them said that they were talking in a mix of English and Arabic when the gunman confronted them.&nbsp;

The victims told the police that they were shot while strolling about a block from the house of Awartani’s grandmother, following an afternoon at a bowling alley, according to a police affidavit filed in support of the charges, reported Reuters.

All three live in different cities but were staying with Awartani and his relatives in Burlington for Thanksgiving. The police said that all three are of Palestinian descent with two of them being US citizens and the third a legal American resident.&nbsp;

All three were graduates of the Ramallah Friends School, a private Quaker school in the occupied West Bank and were now attending universities in the northeast US, their families said.&nbsp;

<h2>What happened in court?</h2>

Eaton appeared for his arraignment in Chittenden County Criminal Court in Burlington via a video feed from the county jail where he has been detained since his arrest.&nbsp;

He was charged with three counts of attempted second-degree murder which is punishable by a prison sentence of 20 years to life if convicted.&nbsp;

The 48-year-old was seen dressed in an orange jumpsuit at his three-minute arraignment after he was taken into custody by an agent of the US &nbsp;Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

The law enforcement official was greeted by the suspect, who held his hands out with palms upturned and said to the officer, “I’ve been waiting for you,” according to the police affidavit.&nbsp;

Taking to social media X, IDF Arabic-language spokesman Avichai Adraee said the family is currently being held in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis.

“Children and babies under the age of one who have not seen the light of day for more than fifty days are being held captive by Hamas, [who] treats some of them like loot and in some places has transferred them to other terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip,” Adraee wrote.

It was unclear exactly when the transfer occurred or which faction was holding them.

Meanwhile, relatives of the family have urged negotiators to "do whatever they can" to get them home.

"Azam Khan's 50 per cent fine imposed by match officials has been reviewed and waived off by the Pakistan Cricket Board," PCB said in a release.&nbsp;

It was during the National T20 Cup 2023-24 match between&nbsp;Karachi Whites and Lahore Blues at the National Stadium in Karachi on Sunday (Nov 26) that Azam was reprimanded for his actions.

Meanwhile, the Israeli finance ministry, as per Bloomberg, reported that the war is costing the economy close to $270 million every day.

Separately, the Calcalist financial newspaper citing preliminary finance ministry figures, earlier this month, said that the war will cost Israel $51 billion. The estimate, which equals up to 10 per cent of the country’s GDP, was premised on the war lasting between eight to 12 months.&nbsp;

Israel’s Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said that the government was readying an economic aid package for those affected by Palestinian attacks that will be “bigger and broader” than during the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp;

While the Israeli government is still in the midst of hammering out the new budget, Governor Amir Yaron, speaking about the decision, warned about the fiscal ramifications of the war which the country would have to endure for at least a medium-term and urged caution.

“Alongside the need to provide a budgetary response to needs created by the war, in emergency times as well there is considerable importance to maintaining a responsible fiscal framework,” said Yaron, as quoted by Bloomberg.&nbsp;

A report published by HAARETZ on Monday (Nov 27)&nbsp;mentioned that the use of prescription drugs to treat depression and trauma increased in the month after the Israel-Hamas war started.&nbsp;

As per the report, Clalit Health Services said the number of prescriptions issued to treat those conditions between September and October grew by 11 per cent. This particular health service is the HMO which, as per the report, treats more than half of all Israelis and around 80 per cent of those living in the war-torn north and south.&nbsp;

The report also mentioned that the rise is seen in prescriptions, which included psychiatric drugs and tranquilisers, such as antidepressants and antianxiety drugs from the SSRI family, and also the drugs from the benzodiazepine family.&nbsp;

As per the report, the HMOs stated that in most of the new cases, the prescribed drugs are for short-term use and are aimed at treating anxiety. They are not necessarily a long-term solution. People are also buying over-the-counter preparations and nutritional supplements with a focus on relaxation and stress reduction.

Another health service, the Maccabi Health Services, which insures some 2.6 million Israelis, said as mentioned in the report that the number of prescriptions it was making for anti-depressants and trauma and tranquillisers had risen 20 per cent in the first months of the war.&nbsp;

As quoted, Dr Tali Shmueli, Maccabi's chief psychiatrist, said: "Not everyone who visits a doctor will necessarily leave with a prescription. There are those for whom a reassuring call or a referral to call therapy is enough. There are those who will be directed to use natural sedatives. Such preparations are not addictive, have no side effects and can help for a certain amount of time."&nbsp;

Shmueli said that "many of those seeking help don't really need psychiatric medication. However, in cases where we really see that someone is not functioning, we give a prescription for medication".&nbsp;

“We really feel attacked,” said the Rabbi, adding that the community wouldn’t be intimidated.&nbsp;

<h2>Police investigation</h2>

Montreal police’s arson squad is leading the investigation and the hate crimes unit has been advised but is not yet actively involved in the investigation, reported CBC News. The law enforcement officials are also reportedly reviewing CCTV footage from the area.

Police have arrested the gunman who shot and injured three university students of Palestinian descent in the US city of Burlington in Vermont on Saturday evening (Nov 25).

The suspect was identified as 48-year-old&nbsp;Jason J. Eaton.

The shooting is being seen as a suspected "hate-motivated crime." 
 
Eaton lived in an apartment building near the site of the shooting.&nbsp;

He was&nbsp;detained around 3:30 pm (local time) on Sunday at the site of the attack, the&nbsp;Burlington Police Department said.

What do we know about the incident?

The incident took place on a street near the University of Vermont where the suspect, who was described as a “white man with a handgun,” without saying anything “discharged at least four rounds from the pistol" fled on foot, said the police.&nbsp;

But according to a pro-Palestinian NGO, the suspect was not silent.

The assailant opened fire after he began to shout at and harass the three men who were speaking Arabic, said the Institute for Middle East Understanding.

The police confirmed that two of the young men were wearing keffiyehs – the traditional black and white Palestinian scarf – when they were attacked.&nbsp;

The incident comes amid a rise in anti-Islamic and antisemitic incidents across the US since the beginning of the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza.&nbsp;

“In this charged moment, no one can look at this incident and not suspect that it may have been a hate-motivated crime,” said Burlington Police Chief Jon Murad, in a statement.&nbsp;

The local police chief said that they are already in touch with “federal investigatory and prosecutorial partners” to prepare for the next steps if the incident is proven to be a hate-motivated crime.&nbsp;

<h2>About the victims</h2>

The victims were identified by their families as Hisham Awartani, a student at Brown University in Rhode Island; Kinnan Abdel Hamid, a student at Haverford College in Pennsylvania; and Tahseen Ahmed, who attends Trinity College in Connecticut.&nbsp;

All three were graduates of the Ramallah Friends School, a private Quaker school in the occupied West Bank and were now attending universities in&nbsp; northeast US.&nbsp;

Two of the students were visiting the home of the third student’s family in Burlington for Thanksgiving.

“Two are stable, while one has sustained much more serious injuries,” said the police speaking about their condition.&nbsp;

The victims’ families issued a joint statement urging the authorities to investigate the shooting as a hate crime.&nbsp;

“As parents we are devastated by the horrific news that our children were targeted and shot,” said the victims’ families. It added, “We call on law enforcement to conduct a thorough investigation.”

The advocacy group American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee also called for the incident to be investigated as a hate crime.&nbsp;

“The surge in anti-Arab and anti-Palestinian sentiment we are experiencing is unprecedented, and this is another example of that hate turning violent,” said ADC National Executive Director Abed Ayoub.&nbsp;

The White House said President Joe Biden had been briefed on the shooting.

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders called the attack “shocking and deeply upsetting,” adding, “hate has no place here, or anywhere.”

‘Let Gaza burn’: Teacher in New York school under fire for remarks on social media

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced on Sunday (Nov 26) that a total of 17 hostages were released by Hamas and handed over to the Red Cross. In a post on X, the IDF said, "Based on information that was received from the Red Cross, 14 Israeli hostages and three foreign national hostages have been transferred to the Red Cross."
