Shivam Mavi made a dream debut with a relentless display of fast bowling as his four-wicket haul made the difference in India's narrow two-run win over a spirited Sri Lanka in the first T20I on Tuesday.

India batters found the Sri Lankan spinners hard to put away before Deepak Hooda (41 not out off 23) and Axar Patel (31 not out off 20) took the hosts to 162 for five.

The Sri Lankans surely had the firepower to chase down 163 but Mavi's strikes at the front and back end of the innings tilted the game in favour of the home team.

The game went down to the wire with spinner Axar Patel managing to defend 13 runs in the final over. Mavi ended with envious figures of four for 22 in four overs.

The fighting knocks from skipper Dasun Shanaka (45 off 27) and Chamika Karunaratne (23 not out off 16) went in vain as Sri Lanka ended 160 all out in 20 overs. This is the lowest total India have defended at the high-scoring Wankhede Stadium.&nbsp;

Skipper Hardik Pandya decided to bowl the first over and the pressure created by him helped debutant Mavi at the other end. Hardik bowled full tilt and hardly gave anything away, conceding only 12 runs in his three-over spell.

Mavi's moment to cherish came in his first over as he showed remarkable composure to strike back after being hit for two fours by Kusal Mendis. Having already got a life in Hardik's first over, Pathum Nissanka had no clue about Mavi's beauty of a delivery that jagged back in to shatter the stumps.

In his second over too, Mavi got hit for a couple of fours before he had Dhanajaya de Silva caught at mid-on. It became 47 for three in the eighth over when Ishan Kishan took a brilliant catch running backwards after Charith Asalanka mistimed a pull off Umran Malik.

Pacer Harshal Patel got lucky with his first wicket as a dangerous-looking Mendis found the deep point fielder before getting rid of Bhanuka Rajapaksa with a slower ball, leaving Sri Lanka struggling at 68 for five in the 11th over. Hardik had to leave the field briefly after taking Rajapaksa's catch.

Hasaranga and skipper Shanaka made the game interesting with a quickfire 40-run stand off 23 balls. Hasaranga put the pressure back on the Indians by smashing Yuzvendra Chahal for back-to-back sixes over mid-wicket, reducing the equation to a very gettable 56 runs off 36 balls.

Mavi was brought back to break the threatening partnership and that is what he did by having Hasaranga caught at mid-off.&nbsp;Shanaka kept Sri Lanka in the game singlehandedly before falling to Umran in the 17th over.

The game somehow went down to the last over with Chamika Karunratne providing a ray of hope for the visitors. With Hardik unable to bowl his fourth over after a fall on the field, Axar was called in to defend 13 in the final over.

Earlier, Hooda and Axar shared an unbeaten 68-run stand off 38 balls for the sixth wicket after India found themselves at a shaky 94 for five at the high-scoring Wankhede Stadium.

Playing his first international innings since the double hundred in Bangladesh, Kishan (37 off 29) went ballistic in the first over itself that yielded 17 runs.

Searching for some swing, right-arm pacer Kasun Rajitha pitched it up and Kishan was quick to flick it over deep square leg for a massive six. Then a slower ball was hit down the ground for four before Kishan pulled Rajitha for another boundary.

Shubman Gill (7), who made his T20 debut alongside Mavi, began his innings with a delightful cover driver off Dilshan Madhushanka.

Shanaka introduced spin in the third over via Maheesh Theekshana and he delivered with the wicket of Gill who missed a straighter one from the mystery spinner to be trapped in front of the stumps. Hoping against hope, Gill wasted a review in the process.

India's best T20 batter Suryakumar Yadav (7) too perished cheaply, leaving the hosts at 41 for two in the powerplay. Playing his first game in front of his home crowd, Surya went for his usual scoop shot but mistimed it to be caught at short fine leg by Bhanuka Rajapaksa off Chamika Karunaratne.

Sanju Samson (5) wasted another opportunity by mistiming a slog off Dhananjaya de Silva.

The spinners stemmed the flow of runs in the middle overs with India collecting only 26 in overs 10-15 with the loss of Kishan and skipper Hardik Pandya (29 off 27), who could not find his range after starting with a couple of exquisite stokes on the off side.

Coming in at number six, Hooda tried to change the course of the innings with back-to-back sixes over deep midwicket off Theekshana. He targeted the same area against Hasaranga in the next over, depositing him for a maximum.

He had good support from Axar as the duo helped India get to a fighting total.

Ind vs SL 1st T20I: India overcome Lanka challenge by two runs to gain 1-0 lead in the series

Ishan Kishan ended 2022 with a bang by becoming only the fourth Indian -- seventh overall -- to slam an ODI double ton during the Indian tour of Bangladesh in December. Playing the third and inconsequential tie due to regular captain Rohit Sharma's thumb injury, the 24-year-old made the most of the opportunity and slammed a majestic 131-ball 210, laced with 24 fours and 10 sixes. Thus, Ishan made a big statement with India stepping into 2023, i.e. an ODI World Cup year with Men in Blue set to host the mega event.

Ahead of India's first international assignment in 2023, the BCCI selection committee -- under outgoing chief Chetan Sharma -- announced the national side's white-ball squads for their home series versus Sri Lanka, starting on January 03. While there was no mention of first-choice Rishabh Pant -- a first-choice keeper-batter across formats -- Kishan found his name in both the squads. With Shikhar Dhawan dropped, India still has&nbsp;quite a few batters who can accompany Rohit at the top. But, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir is crystal clear that Kishan deserves to partner Rohit in ODIs..

As quoted by Cricinfo, Gambhir said that the discussion about who should be Sharma's partner at the top should be over following Kishan's blitz. "I'm amazed we're discussing this, because someone's got a double-hundred in the previous innings," Gambhir pointed out when asked to name his choice on who should open with Rohit. "The discussion is over. It has to be Ishan Kishan. Someone who can get a double-hundred in those conditions against a reasonable attack - especially at [their] home - should play."

"He got what 200 by the 35th over mark? You can't look at anyone beyond Ishan Kishan. He has to be given a longer run. He can keep wickets as well, so he can do two jobs for you. So for me, that discussion shouldn't be there. If someone else had got a double-hundred, I think we would've gone gung-ho over that individual, but it's not the case with Ishan Kishan. Because we still continue to talk about other players. For me, that debate is over," he asserted.

Further, Gambhir mentioned his ideal India XI at this moment. "It's very difficult to look beyond Rohit and Ishan Kishan to open the batting, Virat at three, Surya at four, [and] Shreyas at five, because he's been incredible in the last one-and-a-half years. Yes, he's had issues against the short ball, but he's been able to manage it. You can't be the best against everything but if you're able to manage it and got the numbers going for you, you can't look beyond Shreyas at No. 5 and Hardik [Pandya] at 6."

India, under Hardik Pandya, will host SL in three T20Is -- from January 3 in Mumbai -- before the ODI series kicks off on January 10.

India’s squad for Sri Lanka T20Is: Hardik Pandya (Captain), Ishan Kishan (wk), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav (VC), Deepak Hooda, Rahul Tripathi, Sanju Samson, Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Harshal Patel, Umran Malik, Shivam Mavi, Mukesh Kumar.

The discussion is over: Gambhir feels 'it has to be Ishan Kishan' who should open with Rohit in ODIs

Ishan Kishan created history by becoming the fourth Indian to enter the 200-run club in ODIs during the India-Bangladesh series in the latter's own backyard. Kishan opened the innings in the third ODI, on December 10 in Chattogram, with Shikhar Dhawan, in regular captain Rohit Sharma's injury, and made the most of his chances by slamming a mammoth 131-ball 210; the fastest and youngest to score a 200 in the format.

After the knock, the 24-year-old Kishan is expected to don the blues for a long time and has a strong chance to stake his claim in India's white-ball sides following his marathon inning versus the Bangla Tigers. Coming from Jharkhand, he is reckoned as the next-big-thing for India after MS Dhoni. Dhoni, who put Jharkhand on the map, had a stellar career for Team India -- with 17,266 international runs, 829 dismissals and leading India to three ICC titles -- has been Kishan's idol and the youngster reacted to him being compared with MSD.

Speaking to OneCricket, as quoted by News 18, Kishan said, "I love Gilchrist’s batting and wicketkeeping but about Dhoni Bhai; I’ve seen him on and off the field. The way he keeps his calmness intact and meets everyone. So, these things also matter in life, like how you function and get to know such a big player who functions in what way. So, I think, he has helped me a lot to understand those things."

Kishan added, "I take it [comparison with Dhoni] in a very positive way. I think, ‘Ok. If people are comparing me with MS, that means I’ve got something in me that’s why they want me to see at his place.’ So, I feel, If I can do 70 percent of what he has done for the country, I’ll be happy. Because he has done enough. He made us win ODI &amp; T20 World Cups and the Champions Trophy. There are so many things and even I want to be in that situation where I can make my team win."

Kishan will be looking forward to India's upcoming white-ball series, at home, versus Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Australia before IPL 2023. The left-hander will want to remain consistent and aim for few more daddy hundreds to cement his place in the side.

If people are comparing me with MS Dhoni, I’ve got something in me, says Team India opener Ishan Kishan

India's ongoing tour of Bangladesh saw Ishan Kishan create history. Kishan featured in India's playing XI in the third and final ODI, with regular captain Rohit Sharma being injured, and opened the innings with Shikhar Dhawan. He looked in his elements from the word go and smashed a magnificent 131-ball 210, laced with 24 fours and 10 sixes, to become the fourth Indian to enter the 200-run club in ODIs.

Kishan became the youngster and fastest to score an ODI double ton. Overall, he became only the seventh to join the elite club -- comprising legends such as Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rohit, etc. Despite his recent heroics, the 24-year-old remains grounded and is destined for more success. Recently, a fan requested Ishan to give an autograph on his cellphone -- above MS Dhoni's. To this, the youngster won hearts with his gesture.

Kishan said in a video shared on Twitter, “Mahi bhai ka hai signature aur uske upar bol rahe hain mera karne…mereko thoda ho nahi raha hai&nbsp;(This is Mahi bhai’s signature and you are telling me to sign above it. I can’t do this). "Mahi bhai ka signature hai upar, abhi humlog utna pahunche nahi hai wahan par…neeche karta hun “I have not reached the level of MS Dhoni, I will sign in the bottom)," added the Indian keeper-batter. WATCH - 'I can’t do this': Ishan Kishan wins hearts, refuses to sign autograph above MS Dhoni's

Ishan Kishan made the headlines by slamming a memorable 210 in India's third and inconsequential ODI versus Bangladesh on December 10. Coming in place for injured Rohit Sharma, Kishan opened the innings with Shikhar Dhawan and looked impressive from the word go. Losing Dhawan early, the swashbuckling left-hander stitched a mammoth 290-run second-wicket stand with Virat Kohli (113) to help India post 409-8 before KL Rahul &amp; Co. won by a massive 227-run margin.&nbsp;

Kishan, thus, became only the fourth Indian to hit a double century in the 50-over format. Overall, he became only the seventh batter to join the elusive double-hundred club. After his splendid knock, Kishan's father recently revealed the advice he gave to him.&nbsp;Speaking to The Indian Express,&nbsp;Pranav Kumar Pandey -- Kishan's father -- said,&nbsp;"Jab century maarta hai mai jyada kuch nahi bolta, puri duniya se shabaashi mil rahi hoti hai (When he scores runs, I don’t say much to him because he receives the congratulatory message from everyone)."

"He called me after the match, and I told him, ‘next match you will again start from zero. Don’t let this double hundred get into your head," Pandey added. The 24-year-old Ishan wasn't part of India's 2022 T20 World Cup squad despite being in the scheme of things for quite long time. Recalling the conversation he had with his dejected son, post the T20 WC squad announcement, Pandey revealed, "He was dejected, he was tense, and I have never seen him like that ever. He is a fun-loving kid, but when he was not picked, he was sad. At home, he would not sleep; he would walk on the terrace at night."

Ishan has added to the selection headache with his superb knock versus the Bangla Tigers. It will be interesting to see if he now pips Dhawan and Shubman Gill, having a good run across formats, to open in the forthcoming white-ball home series versus Sri Lanka and New Zealand starting from early 2023.

Ishan Kishan made the headlines by slamming a memorable 210 in India's third and inconsequential ODI versus Bangladesh on December 10. Coming in place for injured Rohit Sharma, Kishan opened the innings with Shikhar Dhawan and looked impressive from the word go.

Coming in place for injured Rohit Sharma, Kishan opened the innings with Shikhar Dhawan and looked impressive from the word go. Losing Dhawan early, the swashbuckling left-hander stitched a mammoth 290-run second-wicket stand with Virat Kohli (113) to help India post 409-8 before KL Rahul & Co. won by a massive 227-run margin. Kishan, thus, became only the fourth Indian to hit a double century in the 50-over format. Overall, he became only the seventh batter to join the elusive double-hundred club. After his splendid knock, Kishan's father recently revealed the advice he gave to him. 'Don't let this 200...' - Ishan Kishan's father reveals advice he gave to his son after his mammoth knock

Veteran India&nbsp;opener Shikhar Dhawan has had a poor run with bat against Bangladesh in the ODIs, and with Ishan Kishan now scoring his maiden double hundred (210) batting at the top, it looks like we have seen the last of Dhawan in this format. As per a report from PTI, as soon as the new selection committee will be formed, a decision regarding Dhawan’s future will be taken.

On Saturday, young keeper-batsman Ishan Kishan opened alongside Dhawan in absence of injured Rohit Sharma and smashed a world record of hitting the fastest double hundred in ODIs in 127 balls. Kishan’s inning was filled with intent and bravery, something that was missing in Dhawan’s approach of late. This historic knock will not only seal Ishan’s place in the XI for the upcoming series, it will also put Dhawan’s spot under scrutiny considering 50 over World Cup at home next year.

"A call on Shikhar's future will only be taken after new selection committee is appointed. But head coach Rahul Dravid and skipper Rohit Sharma's views can't be ignored," a senior BCCI source privy to developments told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

With other young players like Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad waiting in the wings, it will be interesting to see what combination the new selection committee goes ahead with. KL Rahul’s new batting position in the ODIs could play a role here knowing the management looks keen on sticking with Rahul instead of Pant in the middle order for now.

Shikhar Dhawan has been a stalwart of&nbsp;Indian cricket for around a decade now. Other than doing extremely well for India in the ICC tournaments (2013, 2015, and even 2017), Dhawan is also India’s third-highest run-getter (6793) among current crop of players including Rohit Sharma (9454) and Virat Kohli (12471) in ODIs. The left-handed batter from Delhi made his ODI debut against Australia in 2010.

India`s 227-run victory in a dead-rubber was effectively set up by left-handed opener Ishan Kishan smashing the fastest double hundred in the history of men`s ODI cricket in 126 balls, breaking the previous record of 138-ball double-century by West Indies` Chris Gayle in the 2015 ODI World Cup against Zimbabwe in Canberra.

When he got out for 210 off 131 balls, converting his maiden ODI ton into a double-hundred, Kishan had more records against his name -- the highest individual score by a batter in men`s ODIs in Bangladesh, as well as the highest score by an Indian batter outside of the home. His 210 is also the third-highest individual score by an Indian men`s batter in this format.

Kishan, 24, also became the fourth Indian to hit a double hundred in ODIs after Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Rohit Sharma as well as the seventh men`s batter overall to achieve the feat, alongside Gayle, Martin Guptill and Fakhar Zaman. He`s also the youngest to hit a double hundred in menis ODI cricket. Ishan&nbsp;also added 290 runs for the second wicket with Virat Kohli, who made his 44th ODI hundred, and his first in the format since August 2019, also his 72nd international hundred, through a 91-ball 113 as India made 409/8 in their 50 overs.

Chasing 410 was always going to be difficult for Bangladesh. Axar Patel broke the 33-run opening stand on the first ball of the fifth over when Anamul Haque holed out to long-off. Three overs later, Litton Das hit straight to the mid-off fielder off Mohammed Siraj. Axar got his second wicket as Mushfiqur Rahim went for the sweep but was castled. Eight overs later, Yasir Ali was trapped lbw by Umran Malik in a successful review by India. Shakib Al Hasan was accumulating runs in his steady flow but chopped onto his stumps off Kuldeep Yadav.

As Mahmudullah was trapped lbw by Washington Sundar and burnt a review while Mehidy Hasan Miraz didn`t produce any heroics with the bat, the result was all but a foregone conclusion as India registered a crushing victory.

BAN vs IND 2022: Ishan Kishan's 210 powered India to 227-run win in 3rd ODI

India opener Ishan Kishan slammed his maiden 200 in the 3rd ODI against Bangladesh in Chattogram on Saturday. Playing only his 10th ODI, Ishan entered an elite list of Indian cricketers who have hit 200 or more in One-Dayers. While he is the youngest and the quickest ever to achieve this feat among all, Ishan is still the fourth Indian batter on the list after Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Rohit Sharma.

His mind-blowing innings of 210 off 131 balls included 24 fours and 10 massive sixes. Hailing the knock, Sehwag and former India coach Ravi Shastri among others tweeted about Ishan's milestone. While Sehwag wrote this is the approach team India need to adapt going ahead in ODIs, Shastri said Ishan has shown what youth can do and that he has grabbed his chance&nbsp;with both hands. Harsha Bhogle and former India seamer Munaf Patel also tweeted, heaping praises on the youngster.&nbsp;

On the other hand,&nbsp;former India skipper Virat Kohli also notched up a&nbsp;ODI hundred after a gap of more than 1200 days. With this, he completed his 44th ODI ton, and&nbsp;surpassed legendary Ricky Ponting on the list of most centuries in international cricket. While Sachin still stands tall with 100 international tons to his name, Virat has completed 72 hundreds across formats.

India, after being asked to bat first in the final ODI scored a mammoth 409 for 8, their highest-ever score on the Bangladesh soil. As India had already lost this 3-match series 0-2, they will aim to win this match to boost dressing room's confidence.&nbsp;

Virender Sehwag, Ravi Shastri among others hail Ishan Kishan on maiden 200 in 3rd ODI vs Bangladesh

Smashing many records, Ishan Kishan on Saturday became the seventh player in the world to hit a double hundred in ODI history, and he did it at a record pace. He reached the milestone of hitting a double ton in just 126 deliveries, breaking the record (138 balls) set previously by Chris Gayle against Zimbabwe.&nbsp;

The double century came against Bangladesh during the third ODI here in Chattogram.&nbsp; Kishan joins the small yet illustrious list of Indians to have smashed a double century. Previously,&nbsp;Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and&nbsp;Rohit Sharma have reached the milestone.

While Tendulkar and Sehwag have scored a double century in ODI once, current Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has achieved the feat thrice, including the highest ever score of 264.&nbsp;

Martin Guptill, Fakhar Zaman and&nbsp;Chris Gayle are the other players to have reached the incredibly rare landmark.&nbsp;

Ishan Kishan now also has the highest strike rate of over 160 among all the ODI double centurions.

Kishan also broke the record for the highest score by an Indian against Bangladesh in an ODI. The previous record was held by Virender Sehwag who had smashed 175 during the opening game of the 2011 World Cup.&nbsp;

Kishan also smashed 10 sixes, breaking&nbsp;the record of Sourav Ganguly's seven sixes against Bangladesh.&nbsp;

If it wasn't for Rohit Sharma's injury, Kishan would not have broken into the playing XI. However, the southpaw grabbed the opportunity with both hands and has now staked a solid claim for opener duties ahead of the 2023 50-over World Cup scheduled in India.&nbsp;

Put into bat first, India were once again off to a shaky start as Shikhar Dhawan departed on the lowly score of three in the fourth over. However, that was to be the only consolation for the Bangladeshi side as Ishan&nbsp;Kishan came into his own after reaching the half-century mark.&nbsp;

Smashing many records, Ishan Kishan on Saturday became the seventh player in the world to hit a double hundred in ODI history, and he did it at a record pace. He reached the milestone of hitting a double ton in just 126 deliveries, breaking the record (138 balls) set previously by Chris Gayle against Zimbabwe.

He reached the milestone of hitting a double ton in just 126 deliveries, breaking the record (138 balls) set previously by Chris Gayle against Zimbabwe. The double century came against Bangladesh during the third ODI here in Chattogram. Kishan joins the small yet illustrious list of Indians to have smashed a double century. Previously, Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and Rohit Sharma have reached the milestone. While Tendulkar and Sehwag have scored a double century in ODI once, current Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has achieved the feat thrice, including the highest ever score of 264. Martin Guptill, Fakhar Zaman and Chris Gayle are the other players to have reached the incredibly rare landmark. Ishan Kishan smashed double hundred in ODI. What a memorable day for him.#IshanKishan #INDvsBAN pic.twitter.com/3g3Ir957t4 — Cricket & Football Master (@Master__Cricket) December 10, 2022 × Ishan Kishan now also has the highest strike rate of over 160 among all the ODI double centurions. Kishan also broke the record for the highest score by an Indian against Bangladesh in an ODI. The previous record was held by Virender Sehwag who had smashed 175 during the opening game of the 2011 World Cup. Kishan also smashed 10 sixes, breaking the record of Sourav Ganguly's seven sixes against Bangladesh. A knock to remember from Ishan Kishan ✨#BANvIND | https://t.co/SRyQabJ2Sf pic.twitter.com/xh3Es9Jc4X — ICC (@ICC) December 10, 2022 × If it wasn't for Rohit Sharma's injury, Kishan would not have broken into the playing XI. However, the southpaw grabbed the opportunity with both hands and has now staked a solid claim for opener duties ahead of the 2023 50-over World Cup scheduled in India. Put into bat first, India were once again off to a shaky start as Shikhar Dhawan departed on the lowly score of three in the fourth over. However, that was to be the only consolation for the Bangladeshi side as Ishan Kishan came into his own after reaching the half-century mark. Kishan's blistering innings came to end at 210 after he had already added a mammoth 290 runs for the second wicket with Virat Kohli. Kishan's innings was laced with 24 fours and 10 maximums. Rohit Sharma-led India is set to kick off their campaign in the T20 World Cup 2022 edition with their first game versus arch-rivals Pakistan on October 23 at the iconic MCG, Melbourne. Team India reached Australia for the showpiece event early this month and have already played three warm-up games, with two against Western Australia XI.&nbsp;

Winning two of their three warm-up games, so far, India will meet New Zealand on October 19 (Wednesday) at Brisbane in their last practice game before their opening fixture in the main draw of the tournament. For India, they enter the ICC event as the No. 1 ranked side and have been in form in T20Is since their debacle in last year's edition. The likes of Rohit, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Shami, Suryakumar Yadav, etc. will be crucial to India's chances Down Under.

India's final 15-man squad for T20 World Cup 2022:

Standby players -&nbsp;Shreyas Iyer, Ravi Bishnoi, Shardul Thakur, Md Siraj

While the 15-man main squad and reserve list have plenty of match-winners for Team India, here's looking at Men in Blue's star-studded XI featuring players who are not part of the showpiece event Down Under:

India's missed-out XI: Shikhar Dhawan, Prithvi Shaw, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan (wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Venketesh Iyer, Deepak Chahar, Ravindra Jadeja, Umran Malik, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah

The above XI shows the depth of India's squad and the abundance of talent in the Indian camp. The experienced trio of Shikhar Dhawan, Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah missed out with the latter two being injured whereas Dhawan has been sidelined from T20Is. The younger lot such as Prithvi Shaw, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan are destined to take over from the likes of KL Rahul, Rohit and Kohli but for now, they didn't find a spot.&nbsp;

Chahar missed out again due to back issues after being named in the reserves. Meanwhile, Samson and Kuldeep are part of the second-stringed white-ball Indian team but weren't considered for the T20 WC. Meanwhile, Venkatesh Iyer went down the pecking order as soon as Hardik Pandya was deemed fully fit in early 2022.

Lastly, Umran has featured in only a handful of T20Is, indicating that he still needs to learn a lot and more exposure to be considered for such a marquee event.

From Shikhar Dhawan to Jasprit Bumrah: Star players who are not part of India's T20 World Cup squad

Ishan Kishan's terrific knock in the second ODI against South Africa in Ranchi left South Africa legend Dale Styen mighty impressed. After witnessing Kishan's heroics with the willow, Styen issues a warning to Rishabh Pant and India's other middle-order batters stating that they should be wary of the young left-hander.

Kishan has been around the Indian setup for a while now and his amazing hitting prowess is a secret to none. The talented southpaw can single-handedly take down bowling attacks on his day and packs a punch with his sensational strokes. He was in sublime touch during the second ODI against South Africa and missed out on a well-deserved hundred by a whisker.

Kishan slammed a brilliant knock of 93 runs off 84 balls laced with seven sixes and four fours in the second ODI against the Proteas as India defeated the visitors by seven wickets to level the three-match series 1-1. En route to his 93-run-knock, Kishan slammed a boundary and two consecutive sixes off a single over from fast bowler Anrich Nortje, leaving Steyn in awe of his stroke-making abilities.

"I actually played with him way back in the IPL, when he was like a baby. We nicknamed him Justin Bieber because he was like this absolute rockstar. I've watched him go and get better. For a short and small man, he packs an incredible punch. These sixes off (Anrich) Nortje aren't small sixes. They're pure timing and muscle," Steyn said on Star Sports talking about Kishan's knock.

"And just the ability to recognise when to take on the bowler... he is a great player and guys in that premium Indian team, Rishabh Pant, all the other guys in similar position, they will have eyes on the back of their heads knowing that Ishan Kishan is coming for their spot," Steyn said on Star Sports after the third ODI," he added.

Kishan was a regular in India's T20I team last year but fell down the pecking order due to a lack of chances and intense competition for spots. While Pant is currently India's first-choice keeper-batter in the shortest format and is with the rest of the squad in Australia ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022, Kishan was part of the ODI squad for the South Africa series.

Kishan's performances against the Proteas once again made many stand up and take notice of his incredible hitting abilities. The left-hander will be hopeful of remaining consistent and making the most of the opportunities coming his way to regain his spot in the T20I and the main ODI squad.

Ishan Kishan is coming for their spot: Dale Steyn issues warning to Rishabh Pant and others

Shikhar Dhawan-led India demolished South Africa in the third and final ODI, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi, on Tuesday evening (October 11). After levelling the series with an impressive seven-wicket win in the second and penultimate ODI, Dhawan &amp; Co. locked horns with the Proteas with all to play for both the sides.

Opting to bowl first, India bundled out the David Miller-led SA for a paltry 99 in 27.1 overs, their fourth-lowest ODI score (lowest versus the Men in Blue). After Md Siraj-Washington Sundar's early strikes, and an economical spell from Avesh Khan, Kuldeep Yadav joined in and wreaked havoc by returning with match figures of 4.1-0-18-4. The wily spinner, who also accounted for 22 wickets in IPL 2022 (fifth overall), has had a good run in 2022. After his superlative performance versus South Africa in the ODI series decider, questions were raised as to why the 27-year-old isn't part of the Rohit Sharma-led India's T20 World Cup squad.

Nonetheless, Kuldeep isn't disappointed. In the post-match press conference, he said, "I am not disappointed about missing out on the World Cup because I am more focussed on the process. I am seeing how I can improve match by match. I am not disappointed as the ones who were selected are among the best."

'I am not disappointed' - Kuldeep Yadav reacts after not being part of India's T20 World Cup squad

Shikhar Dhawan-led India beat South Africa by seven wickets in the second and penultimate ODI at the JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi on Sunday evening (October 09). After losing the series opener by nine runs, India have now levelled the series with one game to go at the national capital, i.e. New Delhi on Tuesday evening (October 11).

With a host of regular players in Australia for the T20 World Cup, from October 16, Dhawan &amp; Co. came from behind to restrict SA for 278 for 7 in 50 overs, after Keshav Maharaj-led Proteas were well-placed at 215 for 4 in 38 overs. Post half centuries from Aiden Markram and Reeza Hendricks, Md Siraj's 3 for 38 restricted the visitors who chose to bat first despite dew set to make its presence felt in the second-half.

In reply, India were 48-2 but a solid 161-run third-wicket stand between centurion Shreyas Iyer (113 not out off 111 balls) and Ishan Kisha's 93 took the Men in Blue past the finish line. Iyer stayed till the end, with Sanju Samson unbeaten on 30, to take the home side to an easy win eventually. The right-hander has been in terrific form in ODIs in 2022, with four half-centuries and a ton (his second in the format). With his well-compiled knock helping India, Iyer joined Virat Kohli in a unique list.

Iyer joins Kohli &amp; Co.

Iyer became only the second Indian batter after Kohli to score an ODI ton at Ranchi. The former Indian captain has two centuries, both in ODIs, at the venue (one against Australia in 2019 and the other versus Sri Lanka in late 2014). Overall, Iyer became the fourth batter&nbsp;as the list also includes Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews and Australian opener Usman Khawaja who have scored hundreds at the venue.&nbsp;

At the post-match presentation, Iyer said, "When I went into bat, felt that the wicket was playing good. The talk between me and Ishan was to play the ball on merit, build a partnership. Tomorrow is going to be a travel day, and then the match. Let's see what is in store for me (regarding his fitness for next game). I'm not someone who changes according to the bowler. I am someone who changes on instinct and believing in myself."

Meanwhile, Dhawan thanked his counterpart Maharaj to have opted to bat first and said, "Worked perfectly well for us, thanks to Keshav that he chose to bat (smiles). Glad that dew came in at the right time. Ishan and Shreyas batted so well, that partnership was so nice to watch. It was coming on nicely, but it stayed low. Plan was to take on the bowlers in the first 10 overs as we knew it could get difficult in the middle overs. When the dew came, you could see that it got easier. Very satisfied with the bowling unit, they are all young and these are good learnings for them. Especially Shahbaz. All the young boys, I'm so proud that they showed so much maturity."

Overall, Iyer became the fourth batter as the list also includes Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews and Australian opener Usman Khawaja who have scored hundreds at the venue. The talk between me and Ishan was to play the ball on merit, build a partnership. Tomorrow is going to be a travel day, and then the match. Let's see what is in store for me (regarding his fitness for next game). I'm not someone who changes according to the bowler. I am someone who changes on instinct and believing in myself." Meanwhile, Dhawan thanked his counterpart Maharaj to have opted to bat first and said, "Worked perfectly well for us, thanks to Keshav that he chose to bat (smiles).

Ind vs SA, 2nd ODI: Shreyas Iyer joins Virat Kohli in unique list after 113 not out in Ranchi

Rohit Sharma-led India's T20 World Cup-bound players left for Australia last week. After finishing their three-match T20I series versus South Africa, which they&nbsp;won 2-1, Rohit &amp; Co. left for the marquee tournament with the Shikhar Dhawan-led Indian ODI locking horns with the Proteas in the 50-over series at home.

Losing the first ODI by nine runs, in pursuit of 250 in a 40-over contest, India had to win the second and penultimate encounter to keep the series alive. With many of their regulars in Australia for the T20 WC preparations, the talk was that Dhawan-led India's side is a second-stringed side or a B-team, hence, will find it difficult to level the series.

After India rode on Shreyas Iyer's 113 not out, Ishan Kishan's 93 and Md Siraj's 3 for 38 to win the second ODI by seven wickets, Kishan revealed what motivated India ahead of the Ranchi face-off on Sunday (October 9). Speaking at the post-match press conference, the swashbuckling left-hander said, "I heard people talking that we are the B-side, we are not so much capable of beating South Africa's full strength side. I heard these comments and we're really upset about it, so we wanted to play our A-game today."

Kishan stitched a match-winning 161-run third-wicket stand with centurion Iyer. Both came together with India reduced to 48-2 in pursuit of 279, after Keshav Maharaj-led SA opted to bat first. Looking at his intent also gave me a lot of clarity and lot of positivity," Kishan stated on the partnership.

'Heard we are the B-side' - Ishan Kishan on what inspired Shikhar Dhawan's India ahead of 2nd ODI vs SA

Shreyas Iyer struck a sublime century while Ishan Kishan displayed his brute force against a formidable South African attack to set up a series-levelling seven-wicket win for India in the second ODI here on Sunday. Mohammed Siraj led an inexperienced Indian bowling lineup brilliantly to restrict South Africa to 278/7 after the visitors opted to bat.

Iyer made his second ODI hundred (113 not out off 111) and shared a match-winning 161-run stand with Kishan (93 off84) to ensure a comfortable win in 45.5 overs for a second-string Indian team. The 24-year-old Kishan looked like a transformed batter and showed different layers of his batting by switching to beast mode after a responsible start.

The lefthander smashed seven sixes and four boundaries in his career-best knock from 84 balls, while Iyer played the perfect foil. The designated vice-captain of the series, Iyer, has been in top form in ODIs, having slammed one century and four fifties in his last six innings.

Locked one-all after two matches, both teams will play the series decider in Delhi on Tuesday. At India's optional nets ahead of the game, Ishan had made his intentions clear when he clobbered a loose ball with brute force, ramming into the grill of the MS Dhoni pavillion.

On match day, the stage was just perfect for the diminutive batter to boss at his homeground. India needed 231 from 41.1 overs when a classy-looking Shubman Gill (28; 26b) perished to a gravity-defying low catch by Rabada on his follow-through.

Kishan came in and was at his vigilant best. He ran hard for singles and overcame a hostile bowling spell from Nortje when he was clocking 145-plus clicks on a slow Ranchi wicket. The lefthander however did not panic as he reached 29 off 46 balls.

South Africa then started operating with spinners with stand-in skipper Maharaj looking to dismiss Kishan for a second successive time.

But Kishan took the attack on the left-arm spinner and smashed him for three sixes including two in four balls.
The only blip in his innings was when he mistimed one to Rabada but this time he dropped a sitter.

In the next delivery, Kishan took a blow on his elbow that seemingly unsettled him before he fell agonisingly short of a maiden century. Earlier, Aiden Markram (79 off 89 balls) and Reeza Hendricks (74 off 76) looked in control of the proceedings in the middle overs.

But Siraj triggered the collapse and also took a stunning forward running catch to dismiss a dangerous-looking Heinrich Klaasen (30).

He mixed up the slower ones intelligently, bowled with a tight line and length and did not even give the in-form David Miller (35 not out) a chance to put him away. He conceded only three runs in the 50th over to end with figures 10-1-38-3.

From being 169/3, which came courtesy a 129 run-a-ball partnership by Hendricks and Markram, South Africa lost three quick wickets with some clever field placements and bowling rotation by India skipper Shikhar Dhawan.

Even the in-form Miller struggled to get going at the death and Siraj came out on top as they scored just 57 runs from the last 10 overs with the loss of two wickets.

Debutant Shabaz Ahmed jumped in joy after bagging his maiden international wicket as he trapped Janneman Malan in front of the stumps.

It seemed a perfect start for India with the visitors' score reading 40/2 after 10 overs which had just seven boundaries on a dull and dry JSCA wicket.

But what followed was a composed and calculative approach by the middle-order duo of Markram and Hendricks who were happy to bide time, play out dot balls and forge a partnership.

From 20th over onwards, they stepped it up, picking odd boundaries every over and in no time they reached their respective fifties -- Hendricks in 58 balls, and Markram in 64 balls.

Hendricks smashed Kuldeep over wide long-on in the 27th over as they started to make their intentions clear.
But thankfully for India, Hendricks got out to a loose short-pitched delivery from Siraj.

It opened the gates for India and with some smart captaincy by Dhawan they managed to sneak in three wickets for 46 runs including that of a dangerous-looking Klaasen.

Iyer, Kishan slam brilliant knocks as India beat South Africa by 7 wickets in 2nd ODI to level series

South Africa all-rounder Keshav Maharaj has hailed Team India's incredible talent pool and refuted the claims that the Proteas are currently playing against a second-string Indian in the ongoing ODI series. India are currently locking horns with South Africa in a three-match ODI series at home with the team being led by Shikhar Dhawan in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma.

South Africa made a winning start to the series after clinching the first game by 9 runs to go 1-0 up. The Indian team is without all of their T20 World Cup-bound players, including the likes of Rohit, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul among others. Meanwhile, India are also missing the likes of Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah who are out with injuries.

However, the Indian team is still full of quality showcasing the incredible depth of India's talent pool. There are likes of Ishan Kishan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sanju Samson, Kuldeep Yadav, Avesh Khan and Mohammed Siraj among others who are part of India's ODI squad against South Africa making them a formidable unit despite missing a host of first-choice players.

Having said that, a lot of the guys have IPL and have international experience. There are world-class performers out there,"&nbsp;said Maharaj in the press conference ahead of the second ODI between the two teams in Ranchi on Sunday.

"It's always nice to play well against India. Obviously, you want to prepare yourself. They have a world-class batting lineup," he added.

They can field 4-5 international teams: South Africa's Keshav Maharaj hails India's extraordinary talent pool

Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel returned as India announced their squad for the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia next month. The Men in Blue have named a strong 15-man squad after their disappointing campaign in the recently-concluded Asia Cup 2022 where they failed to make it to the final.&nbsp;

While Bumrah and Harshal have made their comeback&nbsp;into the squad, India have also retained the experienced Dinesh Karthik as the specialist finisher while roping in Axar Patel as a like-to-like replacement for the injured Ravindra Jadeja. Yuzvendra Chahal will lead the spin attack alongside veteran R Ashwin.

Much to the surprise of many, there are not many changes in India's squad for the T20 World Cup in Australia this year when compared to the last edition of the tournament which was staged in the UAE. India have made a total of only six changes from the 15-man squad that featured in the World Cup last year where the Men in Blue endured a disastrous campaign.

This comes as surprise as the Indian team had been experimenting significantly under new skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid with the future in mind. Several youngsters have been given the opportunity to showcase their talent on the big stage for India in the last few months but not many have managed to make the cut.

Here is a look at the changes in India's T20 World Cup 2022 squad from last year:

Ins - Dinesh Karthik, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal, Harshal Patel, Deepak Hooda, Axar Patel

Outs - Ishan Kishan, Mohammed Shami, Rahul Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Varun Chakravarthy, Ravindra Jadeja

Ravindra Jadeja would have been a certain pick in India's squad this year had he not undergone knee surgery recently. He has been replaced in the team by Axar, who might not be a first-choice starter. Karthik has come in for Ishan Kishan, who has failed to retain his spot due to a lack of chances and his inconsistent performances.

Yuzvendra Chahal's exclusion was a surprise last year and he has been roped back in at the expense of Rahul Chahar, who failed to impress in the World Cup last year. India have gone with an extra a-round option in the form of Deepak Hooda this time around instead of having an extra spinner - Varun Chakaravarthy.

Who is in, who is out? A look at changes in India's squads for T20 Word Cup 2021 and 2022

KL Rahul-led India outplayed Zimbabwe in all three departments of the game to register a 13-run victory at the Harare Sports Club here and clinched the three-match ODI series by 3-0 on Monday. Sikandar Raza`s crucial knock of 115 runs went in vain as Zimbabwe failed to stop India from completing a 3-0 sweep. Chasing a target of 290, Zimbabwe got off to a decent start as their openers Takudzwanashe Kaitano and Innocent Kaia tried to play big shots. But the duo could not stand in front of the brilliant bowling of Deepak Chahar dismissed Kaia on 6 runs. Takudzwanashe Kaitano was in red-hot form, smashing Indian bowlers for big shots but his innings were cut short as he walked off the ground due to injury. Tony Munyonga came in his place. Sean Williams and Munyonga developed a much-needed partnership for their team as they took their team`s total beyond the 50-run mark, Munyonga smashing two fours in the spell of Deepak Hooda.

The blistering partnership could not stand long as Williams fell prey to Axar Patel`s spell after scoring 45 runs. Sikandar Raza then came to the crease. Raza started his stint on the pitch on an aggressive note as he smashed Indian bowlers all around the ground. Ryan Burl then was sent back to the hut by Kuldeep Yadav after scoring 8 runs. Luke Jongwe joined Raza as he tried to anchor a partnership to keep the momentum going in his team`s favour. Jongwe teh fell prey to Kuldeep Yadav`s spell after scoring 14 runs in 13 deliveries. While hammering Men in Blue Raza brought up his half-century in 61 deliveries. Raza in red-hot form smashed Shardul Thakur in the 39th over to gather 20 runs in six deliveries. Brad Evans and Raza notched up the partnership of fifty runs while taking their team a step closer to the win. After the 44 over the equation went down to 64 runs needed in 42 balls. Raza then went ahead to slam a century against India in 88 delivery. Zimbabwe suffered a big blow Shardul Thakur dismissed Raza after scoring 115 runs in 95 balls. In the last over Avesh Khan departed Victor Nyauchi to help India capture the three-match ODI series by 3-0 with 13 run victory over the host. Earlier, a superb maiden hundred by batter Shubman Gill and a half-century by Ishan Kishan powered India to 289/8 at the end of their 50 overs. The day was extremely memorable for the Indian batters as they smashed Zimbabwe all over the park, Gill (130) and Kishan (50) in particular. Brad Evans (5/54) got his maiden five-wicket haul and all the big stars under his kitty, but there were not much positives for Zimbabwe other than that they could restrict India to a below-300 total.

Electing to bat first, India was off to a solid start. Openers KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan rotated the strike really well, going big only occasionally. Dhawan was more aggressive of two as he got some neat hit crossing the fence for a four. Rahul focused mainly on strike rotation and giving himself some game time. At the end of 10 overs, India was at 41/0 with Dhawan (25*) and Rahul (12*) at the crease. Zimbabwe had a slight edge over India in the next ten overs as India`s run-making was not really fast. The duo crossed the fifty-run stand in 74 balls. The 63-run stand between the duo was broken after Brad Evans`s delivery edged Rahul`s bat and went shattering his stumps. KL`s stay ended in 45-ball 30 runs, with only one four and six, not exactly a stay he was hoping for.

Shubman Gill was the next batter on the crease. At the end of 20 overs, India was at 77/1 with Dhawan (39*) and Gill (4*) at the crease. Though Gill and Dhawan kept the scoreboard ticking for a while, their stand lasted only 21 runs. Evans got his second wicket in the match as a leading edge off Dhawan`s bat was caught by Sean Williams at the cover region. Dhawan was back in the hut after a 68-ball 40. Ishan Kishan was next up on the crease. An amazing drive by Kishan on the first ball of the 25th overtook India past the 100-run mark. Gill and Kishan continued to pile up runs, bringing up their 50-run stand and reached the 150-run mark in 35 overs. Gill was looking in fine touch and brought up his half-century in 51 balls, his fourth in ODIs. The duo also brought up their hundred-run stand in 99 balls. The duo`s assault did not end even after that as they kept scoring runs.

Kishan brought up his second half-century in ODIs off 61 balls. Ishan Kishan was run out in the 43rd over for 50 off 61 balls. The new batter Deepak Hooda was also dismissed for one of three balls by Evans, who struck for the third time in the innings. Gill brought up his maiden hundred in 82 balls. Sanju Samson was the next up on crease. He could score only 15 runs off 13 balls before Luke Jongwe cleared him. At this point, half of the side was back in the hut for 256 runs.Gill kept going and his next partner was Axar Patel, who could not last long either as he was dismissed by Victor Nyauchi for just 1.Gill departed for a well-made 130 off 97 balls and it was Evans who got his wicket after he was caught by Innocent Kaia at long-off.

Evans got his fifth wicket of the day after Shardul Thakur was caught by Nyuachi for 9 at mid-off. At the end of 50 overs, India finished at 289/8 with Deepak Chahar (1*) and Kuldeep Yadav (2*). Brad Evans was the best bowler for the hosts for the day, taking 5/54. Jongwe and Nyauchi got one wicket each.

Brief Scores: India 289/8 (Shubman Gill 130, Ishan Kishan 50, Brad Evans 5/54) against Zimbabwe 276 all out (Sikandar Raza 115, Sean Williams 45; Avesh Khan 3-66).

KL Rahul-led India outplayed Zimbabwe in all three departments of the game to register a 13-run victory at the Harare Sports Club here and clinched the three-match ODI series by 3-0 on Monday.

India and West Indies will now shift focus to the T20Is as both sides meet each other in the five-match series opener on Friday (July 29) in Trinidad. After whitewashing the Windies in the three ODIs, India will now see the return of their regulars such as captain Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, etc. as they start as favourites versus the inconsistent Windies.

However, it isn't an unknown fact that the shortest form of the game is West Indies' most preferred format, comprising several power-hitters. WI vs IND: When and where to watch West Indies vs India 1st T20I match - IST time and streaming details

Shikhar Dhawan-led India whitewashed Nicholas Pooran's West Indies in the three-match ODI series finale, on Wednesday (July 27) at Port-of-Spain, Trinidad. In a rain-curtailed game, India were right on the money and walked past the Windies by a mammoth 119-run margin to inflict a clean sweep over the hosts.&nbsp;

Thus, Dhawan &amp; Co. created history as the second-stringed side led India to its maiden ODI series whitewash over West Indies away from home. Talking about the contest, India opted to bat first and rode on Dhawan's 58, Shubman Gill's 98 not out and Shreyas Iyer's 34-ball 44 to post 225-3 in 36 overs. The revised target&nbsp;for&nbsp;West Indies was a challenging one, being asked to chase&nbsp;257 in 35 overs. In reply, the home side were never in the hunt and got dismissed for a paltry 137 in 26 overs with Yuzvendra Chahal (4 for 17), Shardul Thakur and Md Siraj -- with both pacers returning with two scalps each -- shining with the ball.

India locked horns with West Indies in the second and penultimate ODI, in Trinidad, on Sunday (July 24) with an aim to take an unassailable 2-0 lead. After Shai Hope's century and Nicholas Pooran's 77 propelled the Windies to 311/6, with hosts opting to bat first, Shikhar Dhawan-led Men in Blue were in a spot of bother in their run-chase and were&nbsp;reduced to 79/3.&nbsp;

After half-centurions Sanju Samson-Shreyas Iyer's 99-run fourth-wicket stand kept India alive, Axar Patel's 35-ball 64 not out took India past the finish line, with two balls to spare,&nbsp;in a close encounter as visitors won by two wickets and also clinched the ODI series. After the close victory, India's stand-in captain Dhawan led the charge in the dressing room as Indian players celebrated wildly.&nbsp;

The Iyer-Samson partnership made a huge difference. There was a run-out. But these things happen. Boys are learning. Thanks to the support staff as well. They have been doing a tremendous job. WI vs IND: When and where to watch West Indies vs India 1st ODI match - IST time and streaming details

Team India have reached Trinidad for the upcoming three-match ODI series versus Nicholas Pooran-led West Indies, which gets underway on July 22. India&nbsp;left for the West Indies tour soon after the conclusion of their all-format tour of England, which ended on July 17.

In regular captain Rohit Sharma's absence, out due to rest, Shikhar Dhawan is in-charge of the side and the left-hander will once again get a chance to lead the Men in Blue after the 2021 Sri Lanka tour. Interestingly, it is believed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have spent a whopping sum for the Indian team's flight to West Indies. As per a report in the Times of India, BCCI booked a chartered flight for the team's travel from England to the Caribbean island.

"The BCCI spent Rs 3.5 crore on the chartered flight which took Team India from Manchester on Tuesday afternoon to Port of Spain (the capital of Trinidad and Tobago) by 11.30 pm IST. The reason a chartered flight was booked for the team was not Covid-19. It's difficult to book so many tickets in a commercial flight-the Indian contingent includes 16 players and members of the support staff, including head coach Rahul Dravid. There are players' wives who have travelled to the Caribbean too," the source told TOI on Wednesday (July 20).

"Normally, in a commercial flight, this expense would've been around Rs 2 crore. A business class ticket from Manchester to Port of Spain would be around Rs 2 lakh. A chartered flight is more expensive, but it's a logical option to take. Most top football teams have a charter now," the source further&nbsp;added.

ENG vs IND: When and where to watch England vs India 1st T20I match - IST time and streaming details

Rishabh Pant endured a difficult patch in the T20I series against South Africa at home where he also led the Indian team in the absence of Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul. However, the wicket-keeper batter was quick to bounce back and was among the runs in the recently-concluded Edgbaston Test against England where he notched up a stunning century in India's first innings and followed it up with a fifty in the second.

While he has been dominating in Test cricket over the last few years, Pant, who made his T20I debut for India back in 2017, is yet to establish his credentials for the Men in Blue in the shortest format. Known for his aggressive brand of cricket and swashbuckling style, Pant is arguable one of the best hitters around. However, he has failed to do justice to his talent in T20Is for India.

Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer believes Pant should be promoted to the top of the order to unlock his potential in T20Is for India. India currently have a number of contenders for the opening slot in T20Is with captain Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul as first-choice pairing and the likes of Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad also in the fray.

In reply, Ishan Kishan's 26, off 11 deliveries, Deepak Hooda's 47 not out and captain Hardik's 12-ball 24 led India to a comfortable seven-wicket win to take a 1-0 lead. Will Ireland bounce back to level the series and avoid a clean sweep?

IND vs Ire: When and where to watch India vs Ireland 2nd T20I - IST time and streaming details

Ireland put up a spirted fight but India proved too strong for the home team to win the rain-hit opening T20I by seven wickets here on Sunday. Harry Tector's counter-attacking 64 not out off 33 balls took Ireland to 108 for four after the rain reduced the game to 12 overs a side.

India were always ahead of the run rate in the chase and with contributions from Ishan Kishan (26 off 11), Deepak Hooda (47 not out off 29) and skipper Hardik Pandya (24 off 12), cruised to victory in 9.2 overs.

Kishan continued his good form to get India off to a quick start. The first over of the innings went for 15 runs as Kishan collected couple of fours and a six off Joshua Little.

In a rather surprising move, Deepak Hooda came to open alongside Kishan in place of Ruturaj Gaikwad. He found his rhythm after a scratchy start and put up a match-winning 64-run stand with Hardik.

Just when it seemed Indian were running away with the contest, Craig Young got rid of Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav (0) in successive deliveries to raise hopes for his team.

Kishan's stumps were rattled in another attempt to get a full ball out of the park. Returning to the side after an injury break, Suryakumar got a beauty first up that seamed back to trap him in front of the stumps.

However, Hardik and Hooda kept going for their strokes and a 21-run over from Andy Mcbrine put India back in control. While Hardik departed after hitting three sixes, Hooda stayed till the end to hit the winning four. His innings comprised two sixes and half a dozen boundaries.

Earlier, India opted to bowl in overcast conditions but soon after the rain arrived, delaying the start of play by more than two hours and 20 minutes. The conditions were ripe for Bhuvneshwar Kumar to make the ball talk and he did just that in the opening over of the match.

The wily operator got the ball to swing both ways before an inswinger breached the defence of Ireland skipper Andrew Balbirnie. Skipper Hardik Pandya got himself into the attack in the second over and took two balls to dismiss the dangerous Paul Stirling.

After hitting the first ball over cover, Stirling went for the same shot but mistimed to be caught at mid off. Avesh Khan then had Gareth Delany caught behind in his first over to leave Ireland at 22 for three.

India were expected to run through the opposition but Ireland staged a spirited recovery through Tector, who went for the offensive against the Indian pacers, including debutant Umran Malik. All eyes were on the Indian pace sensation but he had a rather nervous start to his international career.

He dragged his third ball down the leg side and it raced to the boundary off Lorcan Tucker's (18 off 16) pads. Two balls later, Tector played a beautiful straight drive off a full delivery. Malik dragged the next one short but Hector was ready to pull it for a six.

Tucker smashed two successive sixes off Hardik to give further impetus to the innings. The last over of the innings yielded 17 runs and pushed the total past 100 with Tector collecting a boundary from a reverse hit off Avesh before smashing a full toss for six over deep cover.

Deepak Hooda, Hardik Pandya guide India to 7-wicket win over Ireland in rain-affected 1st T20I

Hardik Pandya-led India were off to a winning start in the first T20I versus Ireland at The Village, Dublin on Sunday evening (June 26). After opting to bowl first, Hardik &amp; Co. got early scalps but were asked to chase 109 in a rain-curtailed 12-over contest, which they won by seven wickets courtesy of Deepak Hooda's 47 and captain Hardik's blitz.

During the Ireland innings, Dinesh Karthik was the No. 1 wicketkeeping choice despite the squad comprising Ishan Kishan and Sanju Samson. Thus with DK keeping wickets, in Rishabh Pant's absence, former Indian opener Aakash Chopra has made a big statement. He feels DK keeping wickets is a big statement made by Team India ahead of the 2022 T20 World Cup, to be held in Australia later this year.&nbsp;

"Dinesh Karthik is keeping, which means no Ishan Kishan, and Sanju Samson didn't get an opportunity also. What does it mean, that he is now your primary keeping option if Pant is unavailable, that's a big statement, that's a big endorsement," Chopra said on his YouTube channel. In addition, the ex-Indian player&nbsp;heaped praise on opener Kishan who played&nbsp;a crucial cameo, 11-ball 26, in the series opener to set the tone for Pandya-led India in a tough run-chase.

<section>
"Ishan Kishan played a short knock but a knock which showed that he is cut above the rest. He has the ability to sight the ball early, the might to play the big shots and if you want to search for a disruptive opener, he is the guy, he is putting his hand up all the time," he added.&nbsp;

For the unversed, Ishan returned&nbsp;with most runs (206) at 41.20, including&nbsp;two fifties, in the India-South Africa T20Is at home. Thus, he has carried his form in the Ireland series and will aim for a big score in the series finale, which will take place at the same venue on Tuesday evening (June 27).
