Panahi says he is not afraid to return home Jafar Panahi, 64, is known for his outspoken criticism of the Iranian government and has been banned from filmmaking in Iran since 2010. He has also faced several prison sentences over the years. Despite his legal troubles, Panahi told the Cannes audience he would be returning to Iran. “Tomorrow we are leaving,” he said on Saturday when asked if he feared being arrested again. “Not at all.” On Sunday, he shared a photo on Instagram with his crew, writing: “Travellers return home.” Only the second Palme d'Or for an Iranian filmmaker Panahi’s victory marks just the second time an Iranian director has received the prestigious Palme d’Or. The first was Abbas Kiarostami in 1997 for Taste of Cherry. His latest film was widely praised throughout the week at Cannes, topping several critics’ polls ahead of the awards ceremony.

France’s Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, had praised dissident filmmaker Jafar Panahi’s Palme d’Or win as “a gesture of resistance against the Iranian regime's oppression.”

Russia-Ukraine talks: As Trump toured the Middle East, Russia and Ukraine planned for talks in Turkey. Suspense over Russian president Vladimir Putin's presence in Istanbul continued till the last moment and his no-show became the biggest headline. Later, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also cancelled his visit and talks were held between delegations of the two countries. Amid these developments, a confident Trump said, "And he wasn’t gonna go … He wasn’t going if I wasn’t there. And I don’t believe anything will happen, whether you like it or not until he and I get together. But we are gonna have to get it solved because too many people are dying." 5. Suffering in Gaza: Trump did not meet his biggest regional ally, Israel during this tour. In a rare acknowledgement of the sufferings in Gaza, Trump said, "There’s a lot of people starving, a lot of bad things going on." 6. Grand welcome and bonhomie: From Riyadh to Abu Dhabi, Trump received a grand welcome and his bonhomie with the Gulf leaders was picture-perfect. In Riyadh, royal-purple-carpet was rolled out for the US president, and Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman broke royal protocol by personally greeting the president on the tarmac. In Abu Dhabi, he received a traditional Emirati welcome including a hair-flip Al-Ayyala dance and visited the Abrahamic Family House and mosque calling it all an "incredible culture." In Doha, Trump’s motorcade from the airport was flanked by bright red Tesla, cybertrucks and riders on horseback.

The suspicions arose when Iran was found to have secret facilities in 2002. Following this, an agreement was made, called the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which Iran and almost all other countries signed.&nbsp;
As per the agreement, countries can use non-military nuclear technology for medicine, agriculture and energy, but does not allow the development of nuclear weapons.
Later, all the further nuclear talks goes back to 2018, when Trump unilaterally withdrew the US from the Iran nuclear deal and sent a letter to Iranian leadership, proposing talks. <h2>Trump against Iran nukes - Reasons explained</h2>
In 2018, Trump withdrew the US from the JCPOA, also known as the Iran nuclear deal, and reimposed economic sanctions, which infuriated Tehran.&nbsp;
He also criticised the deal as "defective at its core". Not just that, the US president also warned Iran of military action if the talks do not succeed.
<h3>'Funding terror groups'&nbsp;</h3>
The US president accused Iran of using financial relief from the deal to fund terrorist groups, including Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis running and military operations in the Middle East.&nbsp;
<h3>'Maximum pressure campaign'</h3>
Trump then launched a "maximum pressure" campaign aimed at crippling Iran&rsquo;s economy and pushing it for a new agreement.&nbsp;
<h3>'Most destructive force'</h3>
Trump sees Iran as a major destabilising force in the Middle East, calling it the "most destructive force". He believes that if Iran will develop nuclear weapons, it would increase the risk of nuclear proliferation.&nbsp;
At last, Trump's push for opposing Iran to have nuclear weapons is majorly because of regional stability, the potential for increased US security threats and Iran's aid to terror groups.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/tags/iran">Iran</a>&nbsp;and the United States concluded the fourth round of nuclear talks in Oman on Sunday (May 11) without any breakthrough in a public standoff over enrichment. However, both sides have confirmed plans for future negotiations.
