What they said

Nida Dar, Player of the Match: It was a slow start for us. Bismah told me we need to get a partnership. It was a good wicket for the batters. I needed to hit to my strong areas. I told her (Bismah) you go for singles and doubles. Last three-four overs, it was low scoring. We need to work on that aspect.

Bismah Maroof: It was an important game for us. We executed well. Nida batted and bowled really well. We just wanted to make a partnership. Nida played a crucial innings and helped us get to a good total. We were looking for gaps. We didn't assess the conditions really well. We all executed the plans well today.

Harmanpreet Kaur: I think in the middle we were trying to give other batters a chance. That cost us today. It was a chaseable target. In the middle overs, we were not able to rotate the strike. For me it is important that whoever is new to the side, they get enough games before the WC. It was a great oppurtunity for others. We don't take any team lightly. It is part of the game. They played good cricket and deserved to win. We need to work on areas and be strong.

Women's Asia Cup: Pakistan end India's winning run, beat arch-rivals by 13 runs in low-scoring contest

Jhulan Goswami's last international match turned out to be a humdinger at Lord's. India took on England in the third and inconsequential tie, of the three ODIs, at the iconic ground with an unassailable lead in the series. With the series already in India women's grasp, they still wanted to give a memorable farewell to the legendary pacer.

Being asked to bat first, India were dismissed for 169 in 45.4 overs with Smriti Mandhana and all-rounder Deepti Sharma scoring half-centuries. In reply, England were reduced to 65&nbsp;for 7 and were on the back foot. Nonetheless, Charlie Dean kept the hosts in the hunt and the last-wicket stand troubled the Indian bowlers. From 118-9, England were 153 for 9 before Deepti ran Charlie out. Before the ball was released from Deepti, Charle left the crease -- something she was doing regularly doing her inning -- and paid the price.

As the cricketing fraternity continues to remain divided with regard to the&nbsp;run-out, which is within the laws of the game, skipper Harmanpreet Kaur opened up on the dismissal. "See, we were noticing these things from the last couple of games. She was taking a long stride, she was taking undue advantage. I think it was Deepti's awareness, she was noticing it and we were discussing it," Harmanpreet said in a press conference before the Women's Asia Cup 2022.

Harman added, "But it wasn't in our plans to get her out like that. Everybody was there to win the game. Whenever you are on the ground, you just want to win at any cost. What's most important is that you have to play within the rules. Whatever we have done, it is within the rules. Whatever happened, has happened."

Earlier, Deepti had told the reporters on returning to India, "It was a part of our plan because we had warned her and she was doing it again and again. Whatever we did was as per the rules. We had also told the umpire about it."

'She was taking undue advantage' - Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur on Charlie Dean run-out

Harmanpreet Kaur-led India infliced a 3-0 whitewash over hosts England by winning the third and final ODI by 16 runs at Lord's on September 24 (Saturday). In a low-scoring thriller, India were dismissed for a paltry 169 in 45.4 overs after being asked to bat first. In reply, the Indian bowlers stood tall and reduced England to 118-9 before Charlie Dean-Freya Davies' last-wicket stand kept England alive in the run-chase.

In the 44th over of the run-chase, all-rounder Deepti Sharma dismissed Charlie by running her out as the English batter kept leaving her crease at the non-striker's end at regular intervals during her knock. Seeing the batter taking advantage by leaving the crease beforehand, Deepti pulled off a run-out to take India to a 16-run win in Jhulan Goswami's farewell game.&nbsp;

While the run-out is clearly within the laws of the game, the dismissal sparked a huge debate online. On her return to India, Deepti told reporters that Harman &amp; Co. had warned Charlie for leaving the crease before they pulled off a run-out. Now, Charlie Dean (who was dismissed for 35) has finally reacted to her dismissal.

In a post on Instagram, Charlie hinted at accepting her fault. Posting a number of pictures from the iconic game at Lord's , she captioned, "An interesting end to the summer. What an honour it is to play at lords in England colours. I guess I’ll just stay in my crease from now on."

With a lot of hullabaloo regarding the dismissal, the&nbsp;Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) -- regarded as the custodians of both laws and spirit of the game -- shared a statement saying, "Whilst yesterday was indeed an unusual end to an exciting match, it was properly officiated and should not be considered as anything more."

Meanwhile, many former and active cricketers have also shared their opinions on the run-out by Deepti. The likes of R Ashwin, Jason Gillespie, Alex Hales, Tabriaz Shamsi, etc. have backed the dismissal whereas the likes of Michael Vaughan, Matthew Hoggard, Sam Billings, etc. criticised it.&nbsp;

Harmanpreet Kaur-led India infliced a 3-0 whitewash over hosts England by winning the third and final ODI by 16 runs at Lord's on September 24 (Saturday). In a low-scoring thriller, India were dismissed for a paltry 169 in 45.

On her return to India, Deepti told reporters that Harman & Co. had warned Charlie for leaving the crease before they pulled off a run-out. I guess I’ll just stay in my crease from now on." Meanwhile, many former and active cricketers have also shared their opinions on the run-out by Deepti. 'I'll stay in my crease from now on' - Charlie Dean reacts to her run-out dismissal by Deepti Sharma

India women's cricket team faced England in the third and final ODI, at Lord's, on Saturday (September 24) with a 2-0 lead in their kitty. With Jhulan Goswami playing her last international match, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian eves were desperate to give her a fitting farewell and not become complacent with the series already in their pocket.

Opting to bowl first, England dismissed India for a paltry 169. Smriti Mandhana (50) and Deepti Sharma's 68 were the only stand-out batting performances. Later,&nbsp;the Indian bowlers rose to the occasion and reduced the hosts to 65 for 7. From thereon,&nbsp;Charlotte Dean (47) led her side's recovery&nbsp;before Deepti ran her out as the former kept leaving her crease at the non-striker's end at regular intervals. After resorting to the controversial dismissal, which is within the laws of the game, Deepti addressed the reporters after returning to India.

"It was a part of our plan because we had warned her and she was doing it again and again. Whatever we did was as per the rules. We had also told the umpire about it," Deepti told reporters after arriving in India.

On the other hand, former Indian captain-turned-commentator Anjum Chopra told ANI, "I see no fault of anyone in that is within the laws of the game. She appealed. The umpires gave Charlie Dean out. So, I don't see any controversy being created. If a player is clean bowled, you don't go up with the umpire to check whether the player is bowled or not and then create a controversy oh! You know you are only supposed to dislodge one bail of the stumps. So, I think it is pretty baseless. I see no reason why a controversy should be there. It is very much within the laws. It can happen with an Indian player as well tomorrow. If players from other nationalities can run out another, if he or she is backing up. I saw the game. I have seen ball-by-ball. So, I don't know exactly what happened when but it is pretty irrelevant. I don't see any reasoning for being upset with Deepti Sharma or taking away from the fact that it took the sheen from Jhulan Goswami's last game."

Deepti Sharma opens up on Charlie Dean's run-out, reveals she was 'warned'

Jhulan Goswami, one of the legends of Indian cricket, has confirmed her retirement plans on Friday (September 23). The legendary pacer has revealed that she will call it quits from international cricket after Harmanpreet Kaur &amp; Co.'s third and final ODI versus England at Lord's on Saturday (September 24).

"I haven't decided. So far the BCCI hasn't officially come out with an official announcement, let that come first then I will decide. Right now, I am retiring from international cricket," Jhulan revealed in a press conference while answering whether she will feature in next year's Women's IPL

Jhulan, who has accounted for 44, 253 and 56 scalps in Tests, ODIs and T20Is respectively, was part of India's memorable ODI World Cup campaigns in 2005 and 2017, when they ended as runners-up in both the occasions. Not winning a World Cup medal remains her biggest regret. "I have played two World Cup finals but couldn`t win the trophy. That remains my only regret because you prepare for World Cup for four years. There is a lot of hard work. For every cricketer, it is a dream-come-true moment to win a World Cup," she stated in a virtual pre-match press conference

'I am fortunate to play the sport'

"When I started I never thought of playing for such a long time. It was a great experience. I am fortunate to play the sport. Honestly, coming from a humble background and a small town like Chakdah (in West Bengal`s Nadia district), I didn`t know anything about women`s cricket. My best memory is when I got the India cap and bowled the first over because I never imagined (that I will play for India). The journey was difficult as I had to travel for two-and-half hours by local train one way every day for training," Jhulan asserted.

Speaking about the moment that she will cherish and remain with her forever, the 39-year-old Jhulan revealed, "When I started, it was different. Those days, we used to represent the women`s cricket association of India and now, we are under the umbrella of BCCI. We are fortunate enough; every time BCCI supports us and they always come forward to support us. At the same time, the best memory, was when I received the maiden India cap from my captain was a wonderful feeling. Bowling that first over, that was the most important moment of my life. "I always dreamt of playing for the country. In 1997, the first time I saw the Women`s World Cup final at Eden Gardens, it was between Australia and New Zealand," she added."I was a ball girl for that match, and then I dreamt that I might represent my country for the first time. That is how I started, representing the country is the biggest moment of my life," she further added.

Jhulan remains one of the pioneers of women's cricket in India, along with Mithali Raj. Her knack for chipping in with wickets at crunch situations, bowling the tough overs, and spearheading the bowling unit for such a long time stands out. She is known for her pace, accuracy and will go down as one of the legends in women's cricket (with most ODI wickets and most scalps in 50-over World Cup as well -- 43). Being an active cricketer at the&nbsp;age of 39 for any pacer remains an astonishing feat, hence, Jhulan can be proud of her glittering career.

Jhulan Goswami set to retire; India's Lord's ODI vs England to be her final appearance

Led by Harmanpreet Kaur`s fifth ODI century, India women`s cricket team defeated England by 88 runs in the second ODI at the St Lawrence Ground in Canterbury to clinch their maiden limited overs series in the country in 23 years. The Indian skipper registered her second-highest ODI score — an unbeaten 111-ball 143, an innings which included 18 boundaries and four sixes. Harmanpreet's master class hundred powered India to post their all-time second-highest total of 333/5, after being put into bat on September 21. England were in control till the end of 40 overs, but a late surge by India turned into a nightmare for England's young bowling attack.

England got an early breakthrough as Kate Cross cleaned up Shafali Verma cheaply for eight. But Smriti Mandhana and No.3 Yastika Bhatia were quick in recovery. Mandhana didn't hold back on the attack. The southpaw crunched four boundaries and a six and even crossed the 3000 ODI-run mark en route her knock of 40 before she was trapped leg before by Sophie Ecclestone's left-arm spin. She, however, had steadied the innings with two handy partnerships in the company of Yastika Bhatia and Harmanpreet.

At 99 for 3, India still had a lot of build on, and the Indian skipper ensured the momentum wasn't handed over to the hosts. In the company of Harleen Deol, she added 113 runs for the fourth wicket. Lauren Bell got the much-needed breakthrough in the 40th over before witnessing as well as being on the receiving end of Harmanpreet's ballistic onslaught.

Soon enough, Renuka Singh knocked off Sophia Dunkley's offstump with an incoming delivery to leave the hosts down on 12 for 2 in the fourth over.

Alice Capsey's counter attack helped England pull themselves back from a poor position, but Indian bowlers kept chipping in with wickets quickly. Emma Lamb was trapped leg before by another incoming delivery from Renuka in the eighth over to help India keep control of the proceedings.

With victory firmly in sight, Harleen, D Hemalatha and Shafali also rolled their arms over for a few overs, and combined to return with three wickets in 32 balls as England were bundled out for 245.

ENG v IND: Harmanpreet Kaur's classy 143 propels India to maiden ODI series win in England

India posted a record total with the help of the Indian captain`s fifth ODI century and Harleen Deol`s maiden ODI fifty in the second ODI match of the series against England on Wednesday. Captain Harmanpreet led from the front and played an innings of a lifetime helping India set a record chase for England. India ended their first innings with 333 runs with the help of brilliant innings from Kaur, Harleen Deol and Mandhana.

After being invited to bat first by England, India lost opener Shafali Verma in the second over, as the batter once again failed to secure a big inning. The batter struck two boundaries in the first over and looked set for a big score but was clean bowled by Kate Cross. Kate made an excellent start to her 50th ODI, dismissing Shafali in her first over for eight runs, leaving India at 12/1 in the second over of the match.

Yastika Bhatia made her way to the crease and stitched an important 54-run partnership with the in-form Smriti Mandhana to deny any wicket to the hosts till the 10th over, taking the score a healthy 60/1 at the 10-over mark. Both the batters kept the scoreboard ticking at a good rate, scoring boundaries regularly. Mandhana in the process also completed 3000 ODI runs and became the fastest Indian woman to get there. Charlotte Dean then dismissed Yastika Bhatia in the 12th over to give England a much-needed breakthrough, as the pair looked threatening to take the game away from the hosts. Dean took a superb catch of her own bowling to dismiss Bhatia for a score of 26 from 34 deliveries and left India at 66/2 in the 12th over of the innings.

The wicket of Bhatia brought the Indian captain at the wicket. She was involved in a 33-run stand with Mandhana, before Sophie Ecclestone stuck the pad of the opener. Smriti missed the ball while attempting a sweep, which saw her downfall in the 20th over. The southpaw played yet another handy knock of 40 runs from 51 deliveries, involving one six and four boundaries. Indian total at the end of the 20th over was 104/3, with Harleen Deol joining the Indian captain. The duo resorted to an attacking approach and did not allow the English bowlers to settle down with their line and lengths. Both the batters played some eye-pleasing shots and took the Indian total over the 200-run mark in the 40th over. Kaur reached her half-century in style as she deposited the ball over the mid-wicket boundary with her signature slog sweep shot. The Indian captain clinched her 18th ODI fifty in the 37th over of the match of Dean`s bowling.

Kaur and Deol shared a 113-run stand for the fourth wicket to put India in the driver`s seat.

At the 40-over mark, India's score read 212/4 setting a tremendous platform for the batters to exploit the last phase of the match. Pooja Vastrakar joined Kaur who looked determined to plunder the English bowlers at the fag end of the innings. Vastrakar played aggressive shots along with the captain to take India past the 250-run mark in the 45th over. Both players put their foot down on the pedal and looked to score quick runs, dismantling the English attack. India all-rounder Vastrakar lost her wicket to Freya Kemp in an attempt to score boundaries in the 46th over. Kaur kept going and notched her fifth century in ODIs with a single of Ecclestone in the 47th over.

The batter scored her second century as the Indian captain. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has set aside a window in March 2023 for the first-ever edition of women's Indian Premier League (IPL) and the process to get the show on the road is underway, as per board president Sourav Ganguly. As per ESPNCricinfo, the board has made changes to its women's domestic cricket calendar to make way for women's IPL.

The women's season that generally goes on from November to April has been advanced by a month, with the season set to begin on October 11 with T20 competition and end in February 2023 with an inter-zonal ODI competition.

Since 2018, BCCI has been organising the Women's T20 Challenge. What started as a one-off exhibition match between two teams in the first season is now a three-team competition. Many players from outside India have also joined the competition. But despite this, the clamour to have a much bigger competition just like men's IPL is growing among players and fans for a while.

Earlier in February this year, Ganguly had stated that the women's IPL would be held next year. "We are at the level of formulation to have a full-fledged WIPL. It is certainly going to happen. I strongly believe that next year i.e. 2023 will be a very good time to start a full-fledged women's IPL which will be as big and grand a success as men's IPL.

Owners of IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals and Barbados Royals, The Knight Riders Group have expressed their interest in getting involved in the tournament and owning a women's IPL team.

The inaugural edition of the women's Caribbean Premier League (CPL), which is scheduled to happen alongside the men's tournament later this year will feature three teams, including Trinbago Knight Riders owned by Knight Riders Group. BCCI is expected to hold a discussion on matters related to women's IPL at its annual general meeting in September this year. Much of the planning around the tournament will be around sale of its media rights.

Due to India's improving and great performances at major ICC events over the recent years, the enthusiasm for women's cricket in India is at a never-seen-before high. The latest of these performances was the Women in Blue clinching a silver medal in the recently-concluded Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. Moreover, senior Indian players like Smriti Mandhana, Harmanpreet Kaur and former Indian skipper Mithali Raj have been supportive of the idea of women's IPL.

Raj in fact expressed a desire to come out of retirement to participate in the tournament. "I am keeping that option open. I have not yet decided. There are a few more months to go before the Women's IPL happens. It would be lovely to be part of the first edition of the Women's IPL," she had said while speaking on ICC's 100% Cricket podcast earlier in July.

The much-awaited Commonwealth Games 2022 edition has kicked off in Birmingham on Friday (July 29). The showpiece event started with an eye-catching opening ceremony in Birmingham where PV Sindhu and men's hockey captain Manpreet Singh were India's flagbearers.

The Indian contingent comprises several star athletes such as Sindhu, Manpreet Singh-led Indian men's hockey team, Bajrang Punia, Mirabai Chanu, etc. The mega event is a special one for the cricket fans as well as the sport makes its return at the event&nbsp;this time around. For the unversed, cricket was part of the 1998 Games in Kuala Lumpur. Back then, India failed to even enter the semi-finals -- under Ajay Jadeja -- as South Africa, Australia and New Zealand clinched gold, silver and bronze, respectively. This is the first edition where the women's cricket is part of&nbsp;the&nbsp;Quadrennial Games.

Thus, Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar hailed the comeback of cricket at the marquee tournament. He wrote on Twitter, "Wonderful to see cricket back in the Commonwealth Games. Hope this takes our beautiful game to newer audiences. Best wishes to@BCCIWomen’s team for their #CWG22 campaign."

CWG 2022: From PV Sindhu to Bajrang Punia! Full schedule of Indian athletes in showpiece event

On Wednesday (July 27), PV Sindhu added another feather to her illustrious hat as the 27-year-old superstar shuttler has been named as India's flagbearer for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, to kick off in Birmingham on July 29.

It was touted to be a two-way battle between Neeraj Chopra and Sindhu for being the flagbearer before the shuttler was given the responsibility by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). Neeraj, for the unversed, has bowed out of the showpiece event due to a groin injury which he sustained during his silver-medal win in the men's javelin throw final at the recently-concluded World Atheltics Championships.

"It's a great honour to be bestowed with the responsibility to lead the contingent and hold the flag at such an august gathering. I'm extremely happy and I wish all my fellow contingent all the best for the Games. I would like to thank IOA also for choosing me as the flag-bearer," Sindhu said after the announcement here on Wednesday.

Sindhu was India's flagbearer at the last edition, in Gold Coast, where she returned with a silver medal in the women's singles. This time around, the two-time Olympic medallist will be eager to secure the elusive gold medal.

"The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is delighted to announce shuttler PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist, as the Flagbearer of Team India at the Opening Ceremony," the IOA had said in a statement.

"Two other highly deserving athletes were considered to be Team India's Flagbearer: weightlifter Ms Mirabai Chanu and boxer Ms Lovlina Borgohain, who are both Olympic medallists," it added.

Despite no Neeraj, India have a lot of strong medal-contenders such as Sindhu (whose event kicks off on August 3), Mirabai Chanu (weightlifting), Bajrang Punia (wrestling), Lovlina Borgohain (boxing), Manika Batra (table tennis), India's hockey teams (men and women), women's cricket team, etc.

SL-W vs IND-W: Deepti Sharma's all-round blitz takes India to 4-wicket win over Islanders in 1st ODI

Post Mithali Raj's international retirement, the Indian women's cricket team returned to the 22-yard cricket strip on Thursday (June 23). India started their Sri Lanka tour, with the three-match T20I series opener at the&nbsp;Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, Dambulla. This was also their first-ever appearance on the pitch following the heartbreaking 2022 Women's World Cup exit, early this year.&nbsp;

In the first T20I, Harmanpreet &amp; Co. opted to bat first on a tricky surface. Despite losing Smriti Mandhana for 1, Shefali Verma provided some kind of a start for the visitors for a run-a-ball 31. From thereon, the onus fell on skipper Harman who contributed with a 20-ball 22. However, Jemimah Rodrigues -- on a comeback trail -- impressed the most as she was India's highest run-scorer (27-ball 36) whereas the likes of wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh, Deepti Sharma and fast-bowling all-rounder Pooja Vastrakar chipped in with handy runs down the order as India posted 138 for 6 in their full quota of overs.&nbsp;

In reply, Sri Lanka kept on losing wickets at regular intervals as their top order failed to seize the momentum.&nbsp;Kavisha Dilhari was the top-scorer of the match, returning with a 49-ball 47, however, none of the Lankan batter looked settled and, hence, struck at below 100. Only&nbsp;Ama Kanchana and Anushka Sanjeewani struck at slightly over 100 when the run-chase had already gone out of hand.

After the win, Player-of-the-Match Jemimah said at the post-match presentation, "The pitches are similar to back home in Mumbai and I just applied myself, played my natural game. I love this country and it is a privilege for us to come and play some cricket here. Lot of support from the crowd and Sri Lankan cricket board as well."

Jemimah Rodrigues, Radha Yadav shine as India women beat Sri Lanka women to win 1st T20I by 34 runs

Another day, another World Cup heartbreak for India. On Sunday (March 27), India were up against South Africa in their last league stage encounter in the Women's World Cup, in New Zealand, to book the fourth semi-finals spot.&nbsp;

It was a good start to the must-win game&nbsp;for Mithali Raj's troops. India won the toss and opted to bat first at the picturesque Hagley Oval, Christchurch. The coin toss' decision turned out to be correct for the Indian eves as they rode on an impressive 91-run opening stand between Shafali Verma-Smriti Mandhana. Fifties from Mandhana, Shafali and Mithali propelled India to 274/7 in 50 overs. While Proteas had already qualified and were sure to end at the second spot, they also needed a win to return&nbsp;to winning ways before the knockouts. Nonetheless, it was a herculean task. They had to face 30 overs of spin&nbsp;to complete the second-best run-chase in World Cup history.&nbsp;

India inflicted a run-out early in South Africa's run-chase. Further, they overcame a 125-run second-wicket stand between in-form Laura Wolvaardt-Lara Goodall, pulled off a comeback with regular fall of wickets only to stutter in the concluding stage of the match. A last-ball defeat, with a no-ball twist on the penultimate delivery, sealed India's fortunes in what was a bittersweet campaign.

Was it always coming?&nbsp;

Prior to the World Cup, India toured England and Australia last year. In addition, they arrived in New Zealand much before and&nbsp;played a T20I and five ODIs versus the host nation in February. Having been accustomed to conditions for quite long, they slowly gained some mileage in the CWC'2022 edition. However, they&nbsp;never came to their very best against Australia, England, and New Zealand; paying a heavy price ultimately. The three losses to big teams made their progress tougher. No settled XI, lack of exposure as a batting unit, inability to play big shots at will, and the missing venom in the pace battery, with too much reliance on Jhulan Goswami, marked their inevitable downfall.&nbsp;

It has still only been a day since India's heartbreaking exit. Probably, criticism can wait for a bit longer. The manner of the defeat, which was of the barest of margins, will surely dent the young girls. Nonetheless, these young guns such as Sneh Rana, Shafali, Meghna Singh, Pooja Vastrakar, Richa Ghosh, Yastika Bhatia, etc. can keep their heads high. As former India women's coach WV Raman rightly pointed out in his tweet, 'the glory is not in falling, but rising every time you fall'.

Despite the loss, what are the positives? Well, to force the BCCI to 'propose' Women's IPL is probably the biggest takeaway for the Indian eves. Moreover, the Mitahlis, Jhulans, Mandhanas, Harmanpreet, etc. have set the base for women's cricket. As a result, India's nucleus is still strong and, thus, they have impressed in all ICC events since the last ODI World Cup, even though they remain trophy-less. With back-to-back heartbreaks in close finishes, India need to work on their temperament. Nonetheless, nothing is lost. It might seem to be the case. But there should be no hesitance in falling as the rise is never too far away.

In the virtual post-match conference, Mithali looked at the brighter side and said, "There will be generations of players coming and going, the team definitely will have to get going after every World Cup, there is always a change in the team, in the dressing room. There'll be fresh faces in, there will be some experienced players in - so I think every team has to go through this process of rebuilding a team after the World Cup, especially after the one day World Cup, so that they prepare for the coming World Cups in another four years. And I guess we are no different, probably the Indian team also will probably go through the same transformation."

As clichéd as it may sound, these are tough times. But there will be light at the end of this tunnel. Very soon, we shall find the&nbsp;missing pieces of the puzzle. Another day, another World Cup heartbreak for India. On Sunday (March 27), India were up against South Africa in their last league stage encounter in the Women's World Cup, in New Zealand, to book the fourth semi-finals spot. It was a good start to the must-win game for Mithali Raj's troops. India won the toss and opted to bat first at the picturesque Hagley Oval, Christchurch. The coin toss' decision turned out to be correct for the Indian eves as they rode on an impressive 91-run opening stand between Shafali Verma-Smriti Mandhana. Fifties from Mandhana, Shafali and Mithali propelled India to 274/7 in 50 overs. While Proteas had already qualified and were sure to end at the second spot, they also needed a win to return to winning ways before the knockouts. Nonetheless, it was a herculean task. They had to face 30 overs of spin to complete the second-best run-chase in World Cup history. 🚨 MUST WATCH 🚨 Drama 🔁 Agony 🔁 Ecstasy An all-access, behind-the-scenes look at an epic India-South Africa finale 🔥#CWC22 pic.twitter.com/U4yMELBbfH — ICC (@ICC) March 28, 2022 × ALSO READ | We are proud of you: Virat Kohli reacts after Mithali Raj-led India bow out of Women's World Cup Was it always coming? Mithali Raj reacts to retirement rumours after Women's WC 2022 elimination

Their destiny in their own hands, India will go all out to brush off an inconsistent run and seal a semifinal berth in the Women's World Cup when they play South Africa in a do-or-die match here on Sunday.

So far in the tournament, the 2017 runners-up haven't fired in the manner they would have like to.

With three wins and as many losses India, who are in the fifth spot with six points in the overall standings, find themselves in a must-win situation heading into their final league match.

Their semifinal chances were dented when West Indies, who are also vying to advance to the knockout stage, and South Africa's match was washed out with the former moving up to seven points earlier this week.

A win on Sunday will see India advance to the last four, and a point from the game will also work for the Mithali Raj-led side, as they have a superior NRR (+0.768) than West Indies (-0.890).

In case India lose to South Africa, their only hope of advancing to the semifinals will be if England, who have a better NRR (+0.778), also lose their last league stage match to Bangladesh and finish on a lower NRR. That seems unlikely, though.

But the 'Women in Blue' would want to hold all the cards and also get a two-match winning momentum going into the semifinals.

India's inconsistent batting came to the fore yet again in an otherwise 110-run win against Bangladesh, and skipper Raj would be keen to improve on that aspect against a challenging South African bowling attack.

"Tomorrow is a crucial game and everyone knows that. They are all ready to give their 100 percent. Whoever goes out to bat goes out thinking we have to get partnerships and back each other," Shafali Verma said at the pre-match press conference.

"We want good partnerships in tomorrow's match as a batting unit.The bowling and fielding has become quite good. We have improved as a team," she added.

Raj herself has been struggling with the willow. She has four single-digit scores in the tournament.

Potentially playing her last game for India should they not make the semis, the 39-year-old veteran would be eager to get some runs under her belt, and ensure that her team makes the cut.

Smriti Mandhana, barring the century against West Indies, has also looked scratchy. Shafali got some much-needed runs against Bangladesh while Yastika Bhatia has slotted herself perfectly at No. 3.

Vice-captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been India's most consistent performer with the bat while all-rounders Pooja Vastrakar and Sneh Rana have shown they can be counted on to score quick runs down the order.

The batters will need to fire as a group to get the better of South Africa who have only lost one match in the tournament.

The bowling department, which has looked lacklustre at times, put up a much-improved show against Bangladesh. The move to bring in spinner Poonam

Yadav in place of pacer Meghna Singh paid off for India.

However, it remains to be seen if India persist with two pacers, three spinners strategy at the Hagley Oval, which has a balanced track where the bowlers will have to be disciplined with their line and lengths.

South Africa, on the other hand, have already qualified for the semifinals. They sit second in the overall standings, behind Australia.

However, batting remains a concern for the Proteas. Laura Wolvaardt has been South Africa's stand-out batter. Skipper Sune Luus has three half-centuries while Marizanne Kapp has played a few cameos.

Women's World Cup: Semifinal berth at stake as India face South Africa in do-or-die clash

The race for the semi-finals have intensified with each passing day in the ongoing ICC Women's World Cup in New Zealand. While Meg Lenning-led Australia were the first team to book a slot in the semis, they have been joined by South Africa as the Proteas Women made it to the top four following their washout encounter versus West Indies on Thursday (March 24).

Talking about the West Indies-South Africa clash, only 10.5 overs of play was possible before rain played spoilsport to allow the South Africans to go through. West Indies also moved up to occupy the third spot in the points table and remain alive in the semi-finals race, however, they&nbsp;will need either India or England to lose a game to qualify. Before talking about Mithali Raj-led India's chances for the semi-finals, here's a look at the points table:

<img alt="CWC'22 Points Table" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="61873224-f1e6-424d-912b-fada43be29c2" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/CWC%20PT.PNG" />

With Australia and South Africa already through to the semis, the remaining two spots have three contenders in the form of West Indies, England and India. Pakistan is&nbsp;out of the tournament whereas Bangladesh&nbsp;have an almost impossible task even if they win both games (against Australia and England, respectively) as their NRR is very poor. Hosts New Zealand need a humongous win and, hence, are almost out.&nbsp;

Defending champions England need to win their remaining game to get to 8 points and hope India lose to South Africa. Finally coming to the two-time runners-up Women in Blue, the result in the West Indies-South Africa game is&nbsp;a huge blow to India's chances. They not only need a win in their last league stage encounter -- versus South Africa -- but&nbsp;even with a victory, India might lose out on a semi-final slot as England have a better NRR after a thumping&nbsp;win versus Pakistan.&nbsp;A defeat against the Proteas and England's win will knockout Mithali &amp; Co.

EXPLAINED! How things have complicated for India in CWC 2022 semi-finals race after SA-WI washout

Mithali Raj-led India returned back to winning ways in the ongoing ICC Women's World Cup, in New Zealand, with an NRR-boosting win over minnows Bangladesh on Tuesday (March 22). After back-to-back defeats versus England and Australia, respectively, India faced the Bangla Tigers and finished the game with a massive 110-run win at&nbsp;Seddon Park, Hamilton.

Talking about the encounter, India opted to bat first and rode on a good start by openers Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana. After the end of the 74-run opening stand, the innings progressed ahead with Yastika Bhatia's 50 and vital knocks from the likes of Pooja Vastrakar, Sneh Rana and wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh as India posted 229/7 on a tricky surface.

Despite Ritu Moni's three scalps and skipper Mithali's golden duck, India had a good total to defend versus the inexperienced line-up. Sneh's four-fer and contributions from other bowlers helped India maintain the pressure as the Bangladeshi line-up folded for a paltry 119 in 40.3 overs to concede an easy win for the Indian team.

How can India make it to the semi-finals?

Post the big win over Bangladesh, India have bolstered their chances of making it to the top-four. They have been helped with some recent results, with South Africa losing to Australia and West Indies going down to Pakistan, and now need to only ensure a win in their last league stage match to progress ahead. For the unversed, India can also make it to the semis despite a loss versus South Africa, on March 26 (Saturday), on NRR but will have to fight it out versus other contenders, such as&nbsp;West Indies (one game remaining) and England (with two matches left).

At present, both West Indies and defending champions England are in contention with 6 and 4 points, respectively. Thus, India will have an eye on the two teams' respective remaining games as well.

After the Bangladesh win, captain Mithali said at&nbsp;the post-match presentation, "It was important to get partnerships as it wasn't a surface where a new batter could get going instantly. We did well to get to 230 after losing those early wickets. Having all-rounders definitely gives the cushion of batting deep and it's good in a tournament like this. You want bowling options and also someone down the order to contribute with the bat. Selectors have also been on the same page in bringing more all-rounders. For a long time, we've always banked on our spinners and we have quality spinners. Today's surface did help them a lot too. Wouldn't say we are spin-dominant, it also depends on the opposition we're playing. We haven't played a game in Christchurch yet, so that's a challenge. It's an important game for India and we would want to do well in all departments."

ALSO READ | Women's WC 2022: Rana, Bhatia shine as India thrash Bangladesh by 110 runs to keep semi-final hopes alive How can India make it to the semi-finals? Post the big win over Bangladesh, India have bolstered their chances of making it to the top-four. They have been helped with some recent results, with South Africa losing to Australia and West Indies going down to Pakistan, and now need to only ensure a win in their last league stage match to progress ahead. For the unversed, India can also make it to the semis despite a loss versus South Africa, on March 26 (Saturday), on NRR but will have to fight it out versus other contenders, such as West Indies (one game remaining) and England (with two matches left). At present, both West Indies and defending champions England are in contention with 6 and 4 points, respectively. Thus, India will have an eye on the two teams' respective remaining games as well. ALSO READ | Women's World Cup: Pakistan outclass West Indies by 8 wickets in rain-curtailed game to register first win After the Bangladesh win, captain Mithali said at the post-match presentation, "It was important to get partnerships as it wasn't a surface where a new batter could get going instantly.

EXPLAINED! Here's how India can qualify for CWC 2022 semi-finals after big win vs Bangladesh

Mithali Raj-led India have had a topsy-turvy ride so far in the ongoing ICC Women's World Cup. The two-time runners-up thrashed Pakistan in their tournament-opener before falling flat against hosts New Zealand. India bounced back in style versus the daunting&nbsp;West Indies line-up before losing to England in their fourth outing in the showpiece event in New Zealand.

On Wednesday (March 16), India faced defending champions England at Bay Oval, Mount&nbsp;Maunganui. Opting to bowl first, England rode on&nbsp;Charlotte Dean's 4 for 23 as the big guns such as Smriti Mandhana, Harmanpreet Kaur, Mithali, Deepti Sharma and the likes fell flat as India were dismissed for 134 in 36.2 overs. In reply, England finished the run-chase with four wickets in hand in 31.2 overs.&nbsp;Natalie Sciver's 45 and skipper Heather Knight's 53 led the charge of England as they finally opened their account after three successive defeats.

After the defeat, India find themselves in a tight spot to enter the semi-finals of the CWC 2022 edition. With three big games left, Mithali &amp; Co. will need to revamp at the earliest to finish at the top four. Here's how they can make it to the semi-finals despite the England drubbing:

For the unversed, a&nbsp;total of 4 wins are deemed enough to qualify for the knockouts. Thus, India need two more wins -- from three games -- to enter the semis. With India to play Australia, Bangladesh and South Africa, respectively, they are still very much in chance to enter the next round even if they lose to the invincibles and so far unbeaten team Australia. As long as the Women in Blue do not lose by a huge margin versus the Aussies, wins against the other two opponents should&nbsp;be just enough&nbsp;to enter the semi-finals. Nonetheless, the face-offs versus the Bangla Tigers and South Africa won't be a cakewalk by any means whatsoever.

Talking about Bangladesh and South Africa, the former has only one win -- having beaten Pakistan -- whereas the Proteas are&nbsp;unbeaten, so far,&nbsp;after three outings. Thus, India have their task cut out to win at least two and not lose any game by a big margin.

Above all, they need to address their inconsistency and pull up their socks to progress ahead and become serious contenders.

After the England loss, Mithali said at&nbsp;the post-match presentation, "We definitely didn't have partnerships and it didn't go our way despite getting what we wanted after losing the toss. When you lose you always think you are short on runs. Getting 200 could have had the match go either way. Every game we've done well as a fielding unit. It is a department where we have improved. We need to work very hard with our batting. It is an honour to play alongside Jhulan Goswami. It is difficult for any fast bowler to play at this level consistently."

EXPLAINED! Here's how Mithali Raj's India can make it to CWC 2022 semi-finals after England drubbing

Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur slammed twin centuries as India produced a splendid batting display to notch up a comprehensive 155-run win over West Indies and bring their campaign back on track at the ICC Women's ODI World Cup here on Saturday.

While Mandhana smashed her fifth ODI hundred, a sensational 123 off 119 balls studded with 13 fours and two sixes, Kaur had 10 hits to the fence and two maximums in her 107-ball 109, which was her fourth ton and the first since hitting 171 not out against Australia in the 2017 World Cup.

The duo forged a 184-run stand for the fourth wicket, India's highest partnership for any wicket at the women's World Cup, to help the team post its highest total in the history of the showpiece event, a challenging 317 for eight after skipper Mithali Raj won the toss and elected to bat.

The 2017 edition finalists then returned to dismiss West Indies for 162 in 40.3 overs to keep themselves in contention for the knockout stage.

By virtue of this win, India now lead the eight-team standings with four points from three games, ahead of Australia, New Zealand and South Africa because of a better net run rate.

Chasing the stiff total, West Indies were off to a flier with openers Deandra Dottin (62) and Hayley Matthews (43) putting up 100 runs in 12.1 overs but the spin-pace duo of Sneh Rana (3/22) and Meghna Singh (2/27) put the breaks by rocking the top-order, as the Caribbeans slumped to 114 for four in 19th over.

Pooja Vastrakar (1/21) and Rajeshwari Gayakwad (1/24) then got into the act, removing Shemaine Campbelle (11) and Chinelle Henry (7) as the Windies slumped to 134 for six.

Gayakwad and Rana then combined to run-out Aaliyah Alleyne (4), while Jhulan Goswami (1/43) returned to get rid of Anisa Mohammed (2) and become the all-time highest wicket-taker in the women's World Cup with 40 wickets in her kitty.

Earlier, opener Yastika Bhatia scored a quick 31 off 21 balls, laced with six boundaries, to give the team a good start along with Mandhana.

Bhatia and Mandhana put on 49 runs for the opening stand in 6.3 overs but once she departed, Mithali Raj (5) and Deepti Sharma (15) also followed suit, leaving India tottering at 78 for three.

While Bhatia was caught and bowled by S Selman, Mithali was caught by Shamilia Connell at mid-wicket off Matthews in the 10th over.

India scored 62 for two in the powerplay with Deepti Sharma (15) making a promising start but Matthews took a one-handed stunner at first slip to get rid of the all-rounder.

Mandhana and Kaur then joined hands and steadied the innings as India amassed 100 runs in 20 overs. The duo picked the ones and twos and also got the boundaries regularly to keep the scoreboard ticking. Mandhana scored her first fifty off 66 balls with five fours in the 27th over, while the second fifty came in 43 balls.

The left-handed opener picked up her first maximum in the 33rd over when she produced a straight down the ground six off Selman. She smashed another six in the 37th over long-on off Aaliyah Alleyne.

With the two batter scoring at a good pace, 200 was up in the 36th over. Mandhana reached her 90s with a boundary and got a life when she was dropped by Alleyne on 96. She also survived an LBW appeal before reaching her century with another four off Matthews.

With Kaur also going great guns, India crossed the 250-mark in no time. Mandhana was dismissed in the 43rd over when she found Selman at deep mid-wicket but Kaur took the onus on herself and steered the team across the 300-mark even as India kept losing wickets in pursuit of quick runs.

Kaur, who also got a reprieve on 20, reached her three-figures with a single in the 47th over before edging an Alleyne delivery to keeper Campbell.&nbsp;

Women's World Cup 2022: Mandhana, Kaur hit tons as India register massive 155-run win over West Indies

India women's head coach Ramesh Powar said that the batting performance of the team in the first 20 overs against New Zealand surprised him.

At the same time, Powar was confident that his side will bounce back after New Zealand trashed India by 62 runs in the ICC Women's ODI World Cup on Thursday.&nbsp;

"It was one of those days when things didn't go our way. Honestly, I was also surprised by the way we batted in the first 20 overs. If you look back at the last six games which we played against New Zealand, we were executing our plans well. I think it is the pressure of the World Cup but I don't want to give any excuses," said Ramesh Powar in the pre-match virtual press conference.

Powar explained how India's batting has been improved since the last three tours and now the team have been scoring more than 280 runs.

"Nothing different. It's been a process for a while. If you have watched us in the last six months or last three tours, we've been improving as a batting unit, we used to struggle to get to 220 and have been scoring 270-280. It is up to the individuals now. As I always say, it is the players who go out there and face that pressure and come out of it with their own skills and character," added Power.

Powar believes that the match against West Indies is a great opportunity for the team India to get back to winning ways.

"This is the right time to put your hand up and put up performances as we have been training for the last six months. We've been to England, Australia and came to NZ early, we got every practice opportunity which was needed. So, it is time as a group to stand up and deliver," he pointed.

He further added that the Mithali Raj-led side is well aware of how to perform well against the variation of bowling attacks in the World Cup.

Head coach Ramesh Powar 'surprised' by India's batting performance in first 20 overs against NZ

India and New Zealand locked horns with each other in match 8 of the ongoing ICC Women's World Cup, at the Seddon Park, Hamilton, on Thursday (March 10). After a spirited win over arch-rivals Pakistan, by 107 runs, Mithali Raj-led Indian eves were expected to get a tougher competition from the home side, who eventually beat them by 62 runs to now have two wins from three encounters.

The Indian bowlers managed an early breakthrough, after Mithali &amp; Co. opted to bowl first, but couldn't stop the Kiwi top and middle-order from setting up a good score. At one point, the White Ferns were oncourse to get beyond the 280-run mark, India restricted them to 260-9 in 50 overs. Pooja Vastrakar's 4-fer stood tall but Jhulan Goswami also remained economical (9-0-41-1). She also accounted for a wicket, with a peach of a yorker to dismiss Katey&nbsp;Martin. In the last over of NZ's innings, Goswami's top-notch yorker led to Martin's departure (41) and the latter also acknowledged her with a fist-pump.

In the run-chase of 261, India were never in the hunt due to a slow and timid approach by the batters. Harmanpreet Kaur's 63-ball 71 was the only shining aspect whereas the likes of Mithali and Yastika Bhatia struck at below 60 and 50, respectively, to add pressure on the scoreboard.

After the defeat, Indian captain Mithali&nbsp;said at the post-match presentation, "I think after those early wickets, they got a good partnership going and it seemed like 280 would be on the cards. But we did well to pull things back at the end. It was a chaseable score, provided the top order managed the run rate properly. We needed one of the batters to bat deep. There was a lot of extra bounce under lights, nothing unplayable but we could have done better. The batting needs to get better. The bowlers have done well today, they did well last game too. The batting has to step up."

India will next face West Indies on March 12 (Saturday), at the same venue.

The Indian bowlers managed an early breakthrough, after Mithali & Co. opted to bowl first, but couldn't stop the Kiwi top and middle-order from setting up a good score. At one point, the White Ferns were oncourse to get beyond the 280-run mark, India restricted them to 260-9 in 50 overs. Pooja Vastrakar's 4-fer stood tall but Jhulan Goswami also remained economical (9-0-41-1). She also accounted for a wicket, with a peach of a yorker to dismiss Katey Martin. In the last over of NZ's innings, Goswami's top-notch yorker led to Martin's departure (41) and the latter also acknowledged her with a fist-pump. Mithali Raj-led India kicked off their campaign in style in the ongoing ICC Women's World Cup 2022 edition, being held in New Zealand. Facing arch-rivals Pakistan in their tournament-opener, Indian eves stormed past the Bismah Maroof-led side by 107 runs to commence their journey in the showpiece event in an emphatic manner.

In their next game, i.e. match 8, Mithali &amp; Co. will face&nbsp;Sophie Devine-led New Zealand cricket team in a bid to remain unbeaten in the tournament. The mega event has already thrown in a few surprises and has witnessed some close contests and the same is expected between the two big teams on Thursday (March 10). India have faced New Zealand in the run-up to the tournament. While India lost the one-off T20I and also the following five ODIs, 4-1, they managed to win the final and inconsequential 50-over fixture. Thus, India will be confident while facing the home side.

On the other hand, New Zealand have already had a topsy-turvy start to their campaign in the World Cup. While the hosts lost to West Indies by three runs in the tournament-opener, they bounced back and returned to winning ways with a 9-wicket win (DLS method) over Bangladesh. They will also be upbeat while facing Mithali &amp; Co. due to their recent performances against the Women in Blue. However, another loss will dent their confidence and, hence, the home side might feel some pressure.

Match prediction of match 8 between India-NZ:&nbsp;It is difficult to predict a winner at this time. So far, both sides have not played a single game at Seddon Park, Hamilton. The only game played at the venue in the tournament was a high-scoring affair. If the track favours the batters, India's middle and lower order -- along with their strike-rates -- will be crucial. Momentum-wise, India have the edge whereas recent records tilts the equation towards NZ.

IND vs NZ, WWC 2022 match prediction: Who will win between India and New Zealand?

Despite millions of fans watching on from either side of the border, both India and Pakistan captains are treating their match-up in the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2022 as just another game.

For India's Mithali Raj, the match is the chance to build momentum as India go for a first World Cup title.

"I think as a team we are excited to get into the World Cup and starting our campaign tomorrow. It's the first game, we are not looking at it as it's Pakistan we are playing against, we're looking at a team which has come prepared and we are equally prepared to put our best foot forward and we want to set a momentum going into the tournament, so that's how we look at our first game," said Mithali, as reported by ICC.

"Every time we play a World Cup, every game is very different - different locations, different conditions, different opponent. We've tried to give everybody a go in the warm-up game, so that everybody gets into the rhythm, they form the core players - and for tomorrow's game I think all of them have been watching the first opening game and everybody has their set plans," she added.

As Raj embarks on her sixth World Cup, a record for the women's event, she shared a message for the Women in Blue.

"I think as a team, we need to get in with a clean slate, confident unit. And believe that we can always turn things around and play according to the situation. It's very important when you have a longer tournament - important to be present. Be aware on the ground and play according to the situation," said Raj.

Pakistan and India will meet in an ODI for the first time since the 2017 ICC Women's Cricket World Cup, but for Pakistan skipper Bismah Maroof it will be nothing out of the ordinary.

"We are well prepared and we had good practice sessions and good warm-up games and I think the things we haven't done well in the last year, we have spoken about. Whoever takes the pressure well and plays to their strength - that team will win. We`re hoping for a good match tomorrow," said Maroof.

Only time will tell which side will come out on top, but despite what the two skippers say the hopes of the two nations are pinned on a win for their side.

Women's WC 2022: Pakistan have come prepared, can't take them lightly, says Indian skipper Mithali Raj

Mithali Raj-led India women endured a forgettable run in the just-concluded five-match ODI series versus hosts New Zealand ahead of the ICC World Cup. While the visitors prevented a series whitewash, they weren't upto the mark in the first four games to lose the series 4-1.

Despite a big series loss, India had some players rising up to the challenge throughout the course of the five ODIs. Stumper Richa Ghosh, who is also part of India's squad for the upcoming Women's World Cup, stunned one and all with her range of shots during a scintillating 26-ball 50 (52) in the fourth and penultimate ODI.

The 18-year-old Richa's innings was filled with 4 fours and an equal number of sixes, at 179.31, as she made a strong statement before the mega event. Despite India falling short by 63 runs in pursuit of 192 in the rain-curtailed 20-over aside contest, Richa made heads turn and revealed MS Dhoni as her idol.

"It felt really great as it was my first 50. The last time I got out for 44 in Australia but here I was able to continue and reach half-century. "During my childhood, I used to look up to my father. I used to practice with him at that time, so I was influenced by his aggressive batting approach. When I began watching matches of Team India, I started following MS Dhoni as I was impressed with his power-hitting abilities with the bat coupled with effective wicket-keeping behind the stumps. He is my idol,"&nbsp;Richa added.

Half-centuries from Smriti Mandhana, Harmanpreet Kaur and Mithali Raj helped India avoid a series whitewash by registering a six-wicket victory over New Zealand in the fifth and final ODI here on Thursday.

Mandhana (71 from 84 deliveries) and Harmanpreet (63 from 66) helped pace India`s run chase and Mithali (54 not out from 66) provided the finishing touches, as the visitors successfully chased down New Zealand`s handy total of 251/9 with four overs remaining.

It was India`s only victory of the five-match ODI series, with New Zealand claiming a 4-1 series triumph ahead of the ICC Women`s Cricket World Cup next month, according to a report on ICC`s official website.

With skipper Sophie Devine (34) and in-form batter Amelia Kerr (66) scoring with ease early in proceedings, it looked like the Kiwis were on track to set India an even larger target for victory.

But India`s spinners helped put the clamps on the hosts during the middle overs, with Rajeshwari Gayakwad (2/61), Deepti Sharma (2/42) and Sneh Rana (2/40) picking up six wickets between them to ensure the home side could only scramble past 250 in their final over.

Smriti got on top of the New Zealand bowlers early in the reply, putting the loss of fellow opener Shafali Verma (9) behind her to ensure India stayed well inside the required run rate.

When Smriti fell in the 29th over it provided New Zealand a glimmer of hope, but Harmanpreet steadied the ship with an excellent knock that put the victory target within sight.

While Harmanpreet fell to Hannah Rowe in the 43rd over, it was too little too late as Mithali ensured the visitors cruised home to avoid an embarrassing series whitewash.

NZ v IND: Smriti, Harman, Mithali's fifties help India avoid series whitewash, win 5th ODI by 6 wickets

Mithali Raj-led Indian&nbsp;team will face New Zealand in the fifth and final ODI on Thursday (February 24). So far, the visitors have been winless in their tour Down Under ahead of the forthcoming ODI World Cup. Thus, Mithali &amp; Co. will be eager to sign off on a high and prevent a series whitewash prior to the mega event.

The Indian women's team have looked good in patches, however, they have failed to keep up the momentum throughout a single game and are starring on the brink of a 5-0 scoreline. In the rain-marred fourth and penultimate ODI, India invited the hosts to bat first in a 20-over aside contest. Chasing 192, India were all-out for 128 to lose by 63 runs.

Thus, the fifth and final ODI will give the Indian eves another chance to revamp and put up a good show before the focus shifts to the World Cup. Meanwhile, the White Ferns will aim to go for the kill and also test some other players who have not appeared in the first four games.
