Sports Minister Kiren Rijiju sends good wishes to team India ahead of semi-final vs New Zealand

India head coach, Ravi Shastri, lauded team India's performance ahead of the India-New Zealand semi-final match on Tuesday in the ongoing ICC Men's Cricket World Cup.

In a video posted by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Twitter, Shastri praised Indian players for their brilliant performance in the tournament.

Shastri hailed Rohit Sharma and said that he is one of the greatest ODI players. The 32-year-old Indian batsman has been in great form in the World Cup so far scoring 647 runs from eight innings. Sharma is the only batsman who has scored five centuries in the ongoing tournament.

He has broken Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara's record for scoring the most centuries in a single edition of the World Cup. Sharma has been providing a steady start to the Indian innings and he has the ability to accelerate when required.

"He is one of the greatest ODI players, whether he has scored runs in the competition or not. Just seeing his records over the year, three double hundreds in ODI, no one has done that and he is been really consistent for India," Shastri said.

Shastri further praised India bowlers for their spirited performance in the World Cup so far.

He complimented Mohammad Shami's bowling spell against Afghanistan where he clinched a hat-trick.

"Chahal has got a great temperament as he attacks the batsmen and looks for a wicket, that was the need of the hour. The team that improved like hell, Afghanistan. The match went down to the wire and you needed something special and Shami delivered for us," he said.

Speaking about the need to have good bowlers, he said, "In this format of the game, we got to have good death bowlers who can take wickets and restrict the opponent, and in Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar we got two good ones," he added.

Shastri hailed all-rounder Hardik Pandya and said he is one who can bat and can also deliver 10 overs when required.

"He has come along as a bowler, we are getting full 10 overs out of him. He reads the condition well, knows where to use the off-cutters and the slow bouncers. So, his reading of the game is good which is a massive help for the side when you have the batsman as flamboyant as him who can also bowl," Shashtri said.

Shastri concluded and said our job is to get out and perform as an individual and as a team.

India vs New Zealand washout, frustrated fans come up with funny memes

Inclement English weather claimed yet another World Cup match after India's group game against 2015 finalists New Zealand was called off without a ball being bowled at Trent Bridge on Thursday.

A soggy outfield from overnight showers had already delayed the start of the contest between the tournament's only two unbeaten side.

Umpires Marais Erasmus and Paul Reiffel carried out almost hourly inspections in the intermittent drizzle before finally throwing in the towel in the afternoon.

The umpires said, "It's been unfortunate but that's the way it is. The groundstaff did their best but the weather 48 hours prior to today made it really difficult for them."

This was the fourth match to be either called off or abandoned in the rain-hit tournament with many questioning the absence of reserve days for group matches.

World Cup: India and New Zealand split points after Trent Bridge washout

New Zealand's steady supply of left-handed batsmen will come in handy in Thursday's World Cup match against an Indian team without that variety in their top order, senior Kiwi batsman Ross Taylor said on the eve of the match.

Opener Shikhar Dhawan's injury has not only robbed India of a left-right pair at the top of their order but has also left the two-times champions without a southpaw in the top half of their batting.

In contrast, New Zealand have three left-handers in their top six, including opener Colin Munro.

"Obviously Shikhar is a big loss to India," Taylor told reporters at Trent Bridge on Wednesday.

"He and Rohit Sharma have a very good partnership, and I think they complement each other well because they're right and left-handed.

"I think we've had a similar balanced side for a long time, and when you do have a right-left hand combination, it does put pressure in different ways on the bowling opposition."

A left-right combination forces bowlers to alter line and length while the fielding captain is also compelled to tinker with field settings every time the batsmen change ends.

Taylor said such variety in the batting lineup was necessary to make the most of the World Cup grounds.

"A lot of these grounds in the UK have a short boundary to one side, and if you've got two right-handers or two left-handers, you can't exploit it as much...

"It's traditionally a short boundary here. If that is the case, then hopefully we can exploit it with the right and left-handers."

A lot will depend on how New Zealand fare against the wrist-spin of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav but the 35-year-old Taylor reckoned the duo might bowl slightly more defensively at Trent Bridge.

"Shorter boundaries can sometimes play in the minds of the spinners, one might spin a little bit more defensive, but with the weather around and so much uncertainty, we'll just have to wait and see," he said.

The 2015 finalists have made a perfect start in their quest for a maiden World Cup title, winning their first three matches before the tournament was hit by poor weather, which has already resulted in three matches being either called off or abandoned.

"I said at the start of the tournament that luck is going to play a part," Taylor said.

"England is a beautiful place, but it's not famous for good weather. In saying that, there's still a long way to go in this tournament. I'm sure there's going to be rained out games that could have freaked us along the way."

New Zealand to reap left-right benefit against India: Ross Taylor

New Zeland defeated India in the warm-up match for the Cricket World Cup 2019 on Saturday at the Oval by six wickets.

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor struck half-centuries each as the team chased down the target in 37.1 overs.

"The wicket didn't have enough in the second innings. Very good innings." said the losing captain Virat Kohli after the match.

"In a tournament like WC, the lower order has to score at times if the top-order gets out quickly. Hardik batted well, MS absorbed the pressure well and Jadeja played well," he added.

Earlier, Trent Boult took four wickets as the 'Men in Blue' were dismissed for just 179 after Indian skipper Virat Kohli opted to bat first.

Left-arm seamer Boult, who removed openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan for two apiece to leave India 10 for two, finished with figures of four for 33.

Ravindra Jadeja (54) and Hardik Pandya (30) were the only India batsmen to make it past 19.

India captain Virat Kohli fell for 18 to medium-pacer Colin de Grandhomme when the star batsman was clean bowled by a ball that cut back in off the seam as he aimed towards midwicket.

Kohli's men were in danger of being dismissed for under a hundred when MS Dhoni, the captain of the India side that won the 2011 World Cup, fell to Southee to leave his team on 91 for seven.

But Jadeja's 50 ball innings, featuring six fours and two sixes, helped rally the tail.

India, however, were still bowled out with nearly 10 overs of their innings remaining, with James Neesham taking three for 26.

New Zealand beat India by four runs in third T20, take series

A shoddy batting performance by the middle-order saw Indian women lose a nail-biting second T20 International against New Zealand by four wickets and concede the three-match series here Friday.

The Indian women had earlier lost the first Twenty20 International by 23 runs in Wellington.

Needing a win to keep the series alive, Indian women posted a modest 135 for 6 despite being 72 for 2 after the first 10 overs.

Chasing a modest target, New Zealand made a heavy weather of the chase before scampering home off the last ball of the match losing six wickets.

"I think we should give credit to our bowlers, it wasn't a good total but still they fought for us. We were 20 runs short, They played better cricket than us. We just need to learn from our mistakes and play better," India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur said after the match.

Jemimah Rodrigues slammed a 53-ball 72 that included six boundaries and one six but India scored only 63 runs in the back 10 to end up 20 runs short, which became their undoing.

The White Ferns lost two quick wickets -- opener Sophie Devine (19) and Caitlin Gurrey (4) by the seventh over with the scoreboard reading 40.

But then Suzie Bates (62) and Amy Satterthwaite (23) joined hands and the duo stitched 61 runs for the third wicket to get New Zealand women back into the track.

Left-arm orthodox bowler Radha Yadav (2/23) and medium pacer Arundhati Reddy (2/22) bowled well for Indian women in the middle overs to take the match down to the wire.

Reddy, in fact, brought India women back into the match with twin blows in the 18th over -- first dismissing a set Bates and then accounting for Anna Peterson for a first ball duck to bring India back into the contest.

New Zealand needed nine runs off the last over and Katey Martin smacked Mansi Joshi for a boundary off the first ball to bring down the equation to five off five.

Joshi, however, got her revenge by getting through the defence of Martin in the next ball.

But it was not to be India's day as some sloppy fielding and sensible batting by Hannah Rowe and Leigh Kasperek took New Zealand home.

"We probably should have done that lot easier than what we did. But I am happy. Feels like it's been a while since we won a series," New Zealand captain Amy Satherwaite said.

Earlier, Jemimah, with in-form opener Smriti Mandhana (36 off 27), Rodrigues added 63 runs for the second wicket to lay the base for the total after the visitors lost opener Priya Punia (4) early.

Invited to bat, India women struggled to put up partnerships and the one between Mandhana and Rodrigues saved the visitors' from humiliation.

When Mandhana and Rodrigues were at the crease, India women were going great guns as the duo played fearlessly to put together 71 runs in 9.1 overs before the visitors lost Mandhana.

Mandhana's dismissal brought in Harmanpreet but the skipper didn't last long and perished after scoring only five runs.

India women lose 2nd T20 to New Zealand; concede series

India defeated New Zealand by seven wickets in the second Twenty20 international at Auckland's Eden Park on Friday to level the series at 1-1.

New Zealand set India a modest total of 159 and the tourists overhauled it in 18.5 overs, finishing at 162 for three as captain Rohit Sharma top-scored on 50.

Indian paceman Krunal Pandya was the man of the match, taking three for 28, while New Zealand's best performer Colin de Grandhomme scored his first T20 half-century.

Sharma has become the highest run scorer in the T20I history and also became first India and the third overall player to smash 100 sixes in T20 cricket.

Windies' Chris Gayle and New Zealand Guptill have slammed 103 sixes each.

Earlier, Krunal Pandya struck thrice that helped India to restrict the hosts at a competitive total.

Krunal's 3/28 in 4 overs earned him player of the match award. He dismissed Colin Munro (12) and skipper Kane Williamson (20) to peg the Black Caps back.

In between, Krunal also got the controversial wicket of Daryl Mitchell (1), who fell prey to an umpiring howler, when 'Hotspot' showed a clear inside edge onto the pads.

However, Colin de Grandhomme then counter-attacked, scoring a blistering 50 off 28 balls, adding 77 runs with Ross Taylor (42 off 36 balls) for the fifth wicket.

Once De Grandhomme was sent back to the dug-out by Hardik Pandya (1/36 in 4 overs) and Taylor was run-out, New Zealand's chances of a big total went up in smoke.

It was a much-improved performance by the Indian bowlers with Bhuvneshwar Kumar (1/29 in 4 overs) removing Tim Seifert (12) in the very third over with a fuller delivery, inducing an inside edge to Mahendra Singh Dhoni behind the stumps.

At 50 for 4, it was De Grandhomme, who took charge as he attacked Yuzvendra Chahal (0/37 in 4 overs), hitting him for a couple of sixes.

When he was just about threatening to take the game away, De Grandhomme smacked one straight to covers in skipper Rohit's hands.

India bowled 35 dot balls, which could well be decisive in the final context of the match.

Rohit Sharma, Krunal Pandya help India beat New Zealand to level series

India on Friday bounced back with a clinical performance in the second T20 International against New Zealand and stand-in skipper Rohit Sharma said it was a result of quickly learning from their mistakes.

India suffered their biggest ever defeat in T20s in terms of runs at Wellington on Wednesday but the visitors went to the second game with the same team.

The captain led from the front, scoring 50 off 29 balls to ensure a seven-wicket win for India, their first in a T20 on New Zealand soil.

"Very pleased to see how we bowled, and we were quite clinical with the bat as well. We have quality in our side, but we executed our plans better today, after learning from our mistakes," said Rohit at the post-match presentation.

"It's important to understand the mistakes that we made - it's been a long tour for everyone. So we didn't want to put a lot of pressure on the boys, just go in there with a clear mind."

The series decider will be played at Hamilton on Sunday.

"It's going to be a cracker of a game in the 3rd T20I, but nothing to take away from New Zealand, they're still a quality side," Rohit said.

New Zealand posted 158 for the loss of eight wickets and skipper Kane Williamson felt his team could have done better with the bat.

"It was slightly more tricky to bat (here), but 20 more runs at the death would have been better. It wasn't a 180-200 wicket for sure, but the opening partnership from India just took it away," said Williamson.

"It's important that as a side we are aware of the good bits we have done and put that into practice every time we come out to bat. Today it wasn't our day to be honest," he added.

India's Rohit Sharma becomes highest run-scorer in T20 cricket

The second Twenty20 International match between India and New Zealand became controversial when batsman Daryl Mitchell fell to a debatable LBW call.

An inside edge, that was apparent even without the Hotspot technology, was given LBW out by the third umpire.

Mitchell, who made his debut in the first T20I in Wellington, was given out LBW to Krunal Pandya in the seventh over of New Zealand's innings by the on-field umpires and opted for a review on the insistence of his skipper Kane Williamson, who was at the non-striker's end.

Mitchell and Williamson were sure that there was an inside edge but there wasn't any spike on snicko but the TV replays clearly showed there was an inside edge.

Also, a huge spot on the Hotspot could also be detected as the ball passed the bat but eventually he was still given out by third umpire Shaun Haig.

The issue also triggered a debate on the spirit of the game because the only way Mitchell could have survived was if Rohit had called him back after replays on the big screen made it clear that there was an inside edge before the ball hit the batsman's pads.

But the Kiwis, bestowed the spirit of the game award by the ICC quite often, had to accept the controversial call.

IND vs NZ, 1st T20I: New Zealand lose two quick wickets, are 169/4 after 16 overs

Rohit Sharma-led team India would look to take that ODI winning momentum into the three-match T20 series as the homestretch of a memorable three-month tour of Australia and New Zealand appears.

India didn’t lose a series in Australia and would hope to keep that run going in New Zealand also.

Following their biggest series, 4-1, win in New Zealand, India would be eager for a first-ever T20I series win as well.

“We too are humans and our bodies need a bit of rest. Of course, we would be looking to win the series and carry the momentum back home for the Australia series,” opener Shikhar Dhawan said on the eve of the game.

Young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant would make a difference especially with plenty of calls for his inclusion in the World Cup squad.

Pant was not part of the ODIs might return tomorrow and can utilise the opportunity to stake a claim for a World Cup spot.

Veteran Mahendra Singh Dhoni is also back in the T20 format and his performance will also be keenly monitored.

India's Test sensation Shubman Gill failed to show his cricketing prowess in the ODIs. However, in Kohli's absence, he might get to bat at number three again.

New Zealand will be desperate to turn things around after a 1-4 drubbing. They do hold an upper hand over India in the shortest format. They had defeated India 2-0 in the 2008-09 in the sole bilateral series played on New Zealand soil till date.

However, they won't have the services of premier fast bowler Trent Boult, who has been rested. It will be interesting to see what rookie all-rounder Daryl Mitchell and pacer Blair Tickner do in their debut series.

Probable Squads:

New Zealand: Kane Williamson (capt), Doug Bracewell, Colin de Grandhomme, Lockie Ferguson, Scott Kuggeleijn, Colin Munro, Daryl Mitchell, Mitchell Santner, Tim Seifert, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, Blair Tickner, James Neesham.

India: Rohit Sharma (capt), Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant, Dinesh Karthik, Kedar Jadhav, MS Dhoni, Krunal Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Siddarth Kaul, Khaleel Ahmed, Shubman Gill, Vijay Shankar, Hardik Pandya, Mohammad Siraj.

Rohit Sharma-led team India would look to take that ODI winning momentum into the three-match T20 series as the homestretch of a memorable three-month tour of Australia and New Zealand appears.

Guptill will be replaced by all-rounder Jimmy Neesham, who also featured in the final two ODIs against India in the recently concluded five-match series.

"Unfortunately Martin hasn't recovered in time for this Twenty20 series which is very condensed with three games over five days," New Zealand coach Gary Stead was quoted as saying by stuff.Co.Nz.

"It's a shame as he's obviously a big part of our white-ball sides, but we've got to look at the big picture and ensure he gets the injury right."

Guptill sustained injury prior to the final ODI against India and now will be eyeing a return against Bangladesh in a series starting next week.

The three-match T20 series against India starts on February 6 at Wellington, followed by the second match at Auckland's Eden Park on February 8 and the final game at Hamilton on February 10.

The New Zealand squad also includes rookie all-rounder Daryl Mitchell, who is the son of former All Blacks coach John Mitchell.

India's Ambati Rayudu slammed a crucial half-century to lift India after early strikes jolted the visitors on Saturday.

Rayudu along with Vijay Shankar revived Indian innings after the visitors lost four wickets for just 18 runs in the fifth and final ODI against New Zealand. The partnership, however, ended after Shankar was run-out for 45.

Opting to bat, India lost both its openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan early. The two departed for 2 and 6 runs respectively.

Relying on former Indian skipper MS Dhoni, who returned to the squad after missing two ODIs due to injury, didn't prove worthy as he was clean bowled. He faced a total of six balls and made just one run.

Meanwhile, India's Test sensation Shubman Gill once again failed to score big for his side and got caught off Matt Henry after making just seven runs.

While Matt Henry accounted for Rohit and Gill, Trent Boult dismissed Dhawan and Dhoni.

Earlier, Martin Guptill was ruled out with a back injury and has been replaced by Colin Munro, who was dropped for the fourth ODI, which New Zealand won, after a string of failures.

India lead the five-match ODI series 3-1. The inclusion of Munro is the only change in the New Zealand side with swing bowler Tim Southee again unwanted.

India have MS Dhoni back behind the stumps after the master finisher missed the previous two matches because of a hamstring twinge, and they have also brought back quick bowler Mohammed Shami.

"The average score here is around 230-240, but if you bat well you can get 300," Rohit Sharma said.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson said he was happy with the toss outcome because he wanted to bowl first "to see if we can get a bit out of the pitch early on".

The "josh" is definitely high in the Indian cricket squad as the Men in Blue claimed their biggest series win on New Zealand soil, overcoming a disastrous start to earn a hard-fought 35-run win in the in the fifth and final match at Wellington's Westpac Stadium.

The 4-1 scoreline is the best that India have achieved in New Zealand across formats since they started touring the country in 1967.

After winning the series, team India mentioned the famous phrase of recently released and highly successful Vicky Kaushal-starrer Bollywood movie 'Uri: The Surgical Strike'.

The film is based on the 2016 Indian Army`s surgical strikes in Pakistan following the attacks in Jammu and Kashmir`s Uri town.

In a video shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, the Indian cricket team was asked - "How's the josh?"

"High Sir!" replied the jubilant players.

At 18 for four, India were heading towards another sub-100 total before the middle-order batsmen fought back to post a fighting total of 252. In a video shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, the Indian cricket team was asked - "How's the josh?" "High Sir!" replied the jubilant players. Watch the video here: Looks like the "JOSH" in the squad is "HIGH SIR" 🗣️ 📢 'HOWS THE JOSH' - @vickykaushal09 😉😉#TeamIndia pic.twitter.com/bzsB5EelBd — BCCI (@BCCI) February 3, 2019 × At 18 for four, India were heading towards another sub-100 total before the middle-order batsmen fought back to post a fighting total of 252. The 98-run stand for the fifth wicket between Ambati Rayudu (90 off 113) and Vijay Shankar (45 off 64) was the highlight of the middle-order fight back. Hardik Pandya's 45 off 22 balls also went a long way in India posting a challenging target and his two wickets later on showed why he is such an important member of the team.

'How's the josh?' Team India is asked after winning New Zealand series. Answer of course is 'High sir!'

India lead the series overall 3-1.

IND vs NZ, 5th ODI: Early wickets rattle India, are 18/3 after 9 overs

Sachin Tendulkar has no hesitation in terming India as favourites going into the World Cup but what makes him happier is the team's ability to be competitive "in any part of the world and on any surface".

The Indian ODI team under Virat Kohli has won three bilateral away series against South Africa (5-1), Australia (2-1) and New Zealand (4-1) with only defeat coming against England.

"I have gone on record saying that we have a perfect balance in the team where we will be competitive in any part of the world or on any surface," Tendulkar told PTI in an interview on Sunday.

"As far as our chances are concerned, I will not hesitate in saying that we are the favourites," said Tendulkar.

England, the World Cup hosts, had a torrid time against West Indies in Tests but the ODI outfit will be a different proposition on their home turf.

"It's all about getting the early momentum. My judgement on the toughest contenders would be England, while New Zealand would be the dark horse," he opined.

New Zealand may have been outplayed in the just-concluded ODI series but can prove to be a handful in the mega event.

"I know New Zealand have struggled in this series but it's a good unit, one needs to be on their toes," he said.

The suspended duo of Steve Smith and David Warner will be back in the international fold on March 29 and Australia will be as dangerous as any other team.

"I think Australia at full strength will be a formidable side. With Smith and David Warner back in the team and their other bowlers coming back into the ODI squad, it will be a competitive side," said Tendulkar.

But a few bad overs could spell doom for them as it happened during the recent series.

"But in one-day matches, it's such that when you have a couple of bad hours, 50 per cent of the match gets slipped away."

In Kolkata for marathon flag off, Tendulkar spoke about the young athletes who have done well for the nation in recent times.

He hailed the recent success of women athletes like Hima Das, Dutee Chand and Swapna Barman at the Asian Games and said the sport has proved to be an excellent tool for women empowerment.

He referred to India's Rio Olympics 2016 performance where India had won only two medals, both of them by women -- wrestler Sakshi Malik (bronze) and PV Sindhu (silver) in badminton.

"It's been fantastic through sports. Now for a number of years, we have seen women have brought glory to our nation. I see parents being more flexible in their thought process now. It's not just about becoming a doctor, a lawyer or engineer. There are a multiple things you can do today," the cricket icon said.

"That's how it should be. It's great for India. I always believed that the platforms provided for both men and women should be equal. This starts from the grassroots level. It should start right from the bottom and from thereon there should be equal opportunities for both," he said.

Tendulkar went on to fondly remember his childhood coach Ramakant Achrekar who passed away at the age of 87 last month.

"I hate using this 'was' word that comes to him. Losing Achrekar Sir will always be a permanent void.

"It was a wonderful time with him, that is how I would want to remember him. Wherever I'm in my life right now it's because of him and my family members. He was like family," he signed off.
