Indian bowlers rattled New Zealand batsmen to dominate the fifth and final ODI on Sunday.

Pacer Mohammed Shami provided India with the breakthrough in the fourth over to dismiss opener Henry Nicholls as the hosts chase a target of 253 runs. After few overs, Shami struck again to clean bowled Colin Munro for 24 runs.

Apart from Shami, Hardik Pandya, who performed well with the bat for India, bowled a beautiful delivery to send Ross Taylor back to the pavilion early.

The hosts' score stood at 104 runs for the loss of three wickets after 25 overs.

Earlier, Ambati Rayadu's patient 90 and Hardik Pandya's 45-run cameo powered India to a decent 252 total against New Zealand in the fifth and final ODI at the Westpac Stadium, Wellington on Saturday.

Pandya faced just 22 balls to hit 45 runs which included two boundaries and five sixes. He was caught out while trying to hit a six.

Rayudu, meanwhile, slammed a crucial half-century to lift India after early strikes. The batsman was going strong against the New Zealand attack was also dismissed while trying to hit a big shot.

India's current no 4 was sent back to the pavilion 10 runs short to his century which included eight boundaries and four sixes.

Earlier, Rayudu and Vijay Shankar revived Indian innings after the visitors lost four wickets for just 18 runs in the fifth and final ODI against New Zealand on Saturday. The partnership, however, ended after Shankar was run-out for 45.

Opting to bat, India lost both its openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan early. The two departed for 2 and 6 runs respectively.

Relying on skipper MS Dhoni, who returned to the squad after missing two ODIs due to injury, was clean bowled. He faced a total of six balls and made just one run.

Meanwhile, India's Test sensation Shubman Gill once again failed to score big for his side and got caught off Matt Henry after making just seven runs.

While Matt Henry accounted for Rohit and Gill, Trent Boult dismissed Dhawan and Dhoni.

Earlier, Martin Guptill was ruled out with a back injury and has been replaced by Colin Munro, who was dropped for the fourth ODI, which New Zealand won, after a string of failures.

India lead the five-match ODI series 3-1. The inclusion of Munro is the only change in the New Zealand side with swing bowler Tim Southee again unwanted.

India have MS Dhoni back behind the stumps after the master finisher missed the previous two matches because of a hamstring twinge, and they have also brought back quick bowler Mohammed Shami.

"The average score here is around 230-240, but if you bat well you can get 300," Rohit Sharma said.

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson said he was happy with the toss outcome because he wanted to bowl first "to see if we can get a bit out of the pitch early on".

5th ODI: Shami, Pandya dominate New Zealand batsmen; are 104/3 after 25 overs

Pushed out of their comfort zone by some incisive swing bowling in challenging conditions, a jolted India will gain confidence from Mahendra Singh Dhoni's return as they aim to finish the five-match series against New Zealand on a high.

India's most experienced ODI player was out with hamstring injury during the last two matches and his return couldn't have been timed better after their inexplicable collapse for 92 in Hamilton.

A 4-1 margin will look much better than 3-2 but it will be easier said than done at the Westpac Stadium in Wellington.

The windy conditions here could just be the shot that Trent Boult would need as he again marks his run-up.

And that's where Dhoni's presence will be a factor in that middle order which still doesn't rock solid if skipper Virat Kohli isn't around.

Assistant coach Sanjay Bangar confirmed that Dhoni is fit and available for the game.

"Yes, he is fit and will be playing the fifth ODI," Bangar told reporters on the eve of the game.

Dhoni's calmness in anchoring the innings will be priceless and young Shubman Gill might make the way in the playing XI as the World Cup preparations hit full swing.

The Hamilton match was an eye opener where Ambati Rayudu, Kedar Jadhav and Dinesh Karthik failed to prove a point that they can stand up and be counted if Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan fail on a given day with Kohli also not around.

However, Bangar said it was an one-odd failure.

"The middle order has rose to the occasion many times and delivered. Yes some situation has been trying but it is not that the middle order hasn't performed," Bangar said.

"When required, more often than not whenever it has been put in a situation, it has delivered, maybe the last game was an aberration," the assistant coach in charge of batting, added.

With the three-match T20I series ahead and also the World Cup round the corner, India will have to address this weakness to ensure that their much-vaunted batting doesn't crumble on an odd day when the condition aids swing bowling in England.

Rohit has already described it as 'one of the worst batting performance' by the team and he would like to lead by example by quickly getting over the disappointment with another fiery opening stand with Shikhar Dhawan on Sunday.

Having returned from provisional suspension post his loose talk on a TV chat show, Hardik Pandya gave ample display of his importance in the ODI team and he will look to continue to deliver.

It will be interesting if Mohammed Shami comes back for the final game with Bhuvneshwar Kumar getting the rest.

The team management might also want to test Mohammed Siraj as Khaleel Ahmed wasn't very impressive in the last game.

Although the series is done and dusted, the fourth ODI win gave a new lease of life to New Zealand's campaign and they will look to dish out another superlative performance before going into the T20I series.

Opener Henry Nicholls, who replaced Colin Munro in the fourth ODI, made an unbeaten 30 to provide solidity at the top, while Ross Taylor looked in good touch en route his 93 and 37 not out in the last two innings.

New Zealand, however, is likely to miss out opener Martin Guptill who suffered a back injury during practice.

In the bowling department, Boult has swung his way with a five-wicket haul while Grandhomme seemed to have regained confidence with his three-wicket haul in the last match.

Back into the New Zealand fold, all-rounder James Neesham and spinner Todd Astle have made a decent start with one wicket each in the fourth game.

Playing XI:

India: Rohit Sharma (captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Mahendra Singh Dhoni (wk), Kedar Jadhav, Dinesh Karthik, Vijay Shankar, Shubman Gill, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Siraj, Khaleel Ahmed, Ravindra Jadeja, Hardik Pandya.

New Zealand: Kane Williamson (c), Todd Astle, Trent Boult, Colin de Grandhomme, Lockie Ferguson, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Tom Latham (wk), Colin Munro, Jimmy Neesham, Henry Nicholls, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, and Ross Taylor.

India's most experienced ODI player was out of the last two games with a hamstring injury.

"Yes, he is fit and will be playing the fifth ODI," Bangar told reporters on the eve of the game.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli was granted rest for the remaining two ODIs and three T20I after India won the third ODI also and clinched the five-match series.

There was a point when India were 40 for the loss of seven wickets just because the top-batsmen failed to play along with the swing. New Zealand dismissed India's top five players in quick succession to dominate the fourth ODI on Thursday. With just 13 overs into the game, India has already lost six wickets and have made just 35 runs. Put into bat, 'Men In Blue' lost opener Shikhar Dhawan for just 13 runs. Minutes later, stand-in skipper Rohit Sharma also lost his wicket for seven. Both the openers were dismissed by Trent Boult, taking India's score to 23 for the loss of two wickets after eight overs. But the damage did not stop there as Colin de Grandhomme struck twice to put his side in a commanding position. He first dismissed Rayudu and took Karthik's wickets in two successive deliveries. 4th ODI: Dhawan, Rohit depart early; India 23/2 after eight overs

India's stand-in captain Rohit Sharma Thursday said the performance against New Zealand in the fourth ODI was one of the worst performances with the bat.

Electing to field, Kiwi pacer Trent Boult displayed a phenomenal spell of bowling and clinched five wickets while Colin de Grandhomme's disciplined bowling wreaked havoc in India's batting line-up to bowl them out for mere 92.

Despite having a long batting line-up, India failed miserably as only two batsmen, Shikhar Dhawan (13) and Hardik Pandya (16), managed to reach double digits.

It was the lower order chinaman Kuldeep Yadav (15) and leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal who contributed with the bat and scored 15 and unbeaten 18 runs respectively to raise the target.

Speaking after losing the game, Rohit said, "One of our worst performances with the bat in a long, long time. Something we didn't expect. You got to give credit to the NZ bowlers."

"At times, you need to absorb pressure (when asked about how to bat in swinging conditions). We need to blame ourselves for it. Things were looking good at that stage. It was about applying ourselves," he added.

"We played some bad shots as well. It`s always challenging when the ball is swinging. Having a good run in the limited formats for a number of series. Everyone knows what went wrong. When you are playing for your country, you try to give your best. Good teams usually keep ticking the boxes and today we didn't tick the right boxes," Rohit concluded.

India were reeling at 55/8 when Kuldeep and Chahal forged a small but crucial 25-run partnership. Chahal was also the top-scorer for India.

The host chased down the target in just 14.4 overs to end their losing streak. The five-match series is now 3-1 with the last ODI being played on Sunday.

New Zealand picked two uncapped players in all-rounder Daryl Mitchell and pacer Blair Tickner for the three-match T20 International series against India starting February 6 here.

Regular skipper Kane Williamson was Wednesday named captain of the 14-strong squad after skipping the one-off T20 against Sri Lanka. The Black Caps are currently competing in a five-match one-day series against with India and have conceded a 0-3 lead.

"Doug Bracewell, brought in as a replacement for the injured Jimmy Neesham ahead of the most recent T20 against Sri Lanka, has retained his place in the squad," New Zealand Cricket said in a statement.

India will be led by Rohit Sharma in the series as Virat Kohli has been rested to manage his workload.

Mitchell and Tickner have been rewarded for their good performances in New Zealand's domestic T20 league -- the Super Smash.

Mitchell scored a 23-ball 61 for Northern Knights against Central Stags recently and was also in good form for New Zealand A in one-day cricket.

Tickner will be part of the Kiwi squad for the final T20I as a replacement for Lockie Ferguson, who is there for the first two matches.

"Both Daryl and Blair have been rewarded for the strong form they've produced in domestic cricket," said Gavin Larsen, the New Zealand selector.

"Daryl has shown his value with the bat and also tends to bowl at some tough times for the Knights, and Blair is well-respected among his team-mates and opponents alike as someone who bowls a heavy ball at good pace," he added.

The three-match series will be double-headers alongside women's matches between the two sides on the same pitch.

New Zealand induct two rookies in team for T20I series against India

India defeated New Zealand by seven wickets in the third ODI of their ongoing five-match series and took an unassailable 3-0 lead at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui on Monday.

The two teams will again lock horns for the fourth ODI on Thursday and India will eye a 4-0 lead in the five-match series. It will be India's biggest series win (across formats) in their 52 years of touring New Zealand having first visited the country back in 1967.

Rohit Sharma, who will be leading the side after skipper Virat Kohli was given rest, will be eager to make his 200th appearance for India.

Chasing an easy target of 244 runs, the Indian top-order batsmen produced a flawless performance in the 3rd ODI to guide their side to victory, with seven overs still left in the match.

Meanwhile, Mahendra Singh Dhoni's hamstring injury is not known but according to team sources, there is nothing much to worry about. A decision on Dhoni's availability will be taken before the toss tomorrow.

Indian fans could also get a glimpse of the talented Shubman Gill, who displayed a spectacular show in tests against Australia, in the senior team jersey.

Coach Ravi Shastri and Sharma might just give Gill a go in order to find a better option at No 4, where Ambati Rayudu has done a decent job so far.

The bowling department also looks settled with Kuldeep Yadav (8 wickets in 3 games) and Yuzvendra Chahal (6 wickets in 3 games) accounting for 14 wickets so far in the series.

Mohammed Shami, who has won back-to-back Man of the Match awards, could be given some rest as he has been playing non-stop since the start of the Australia Test series.

In case Shami is rested, Khaleel Ahmed or Mohammed Siraj could be given another chance to stake their claim for the reserve pacer's slot available in the World Cup squad.

4th ODI: India eye biggest series win on New Zealand soil

Former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar was impressed by Hardik Pandya's contribution in the third One-Day International against New Zealand. He said that Pandya's presence covers all bases for the side.

"He was very, very impressive. You know why this team management wants him in the side. He actually fills that little blank that was there. This allows the team to be balanced. He covers all the bases for the team," Gavaskar told Star Sports.

"He's bowled a very good line, he has used the bouncers to very good effect. He has been like a live wire on the field. That's the plus that Hardik Pandya brings to the team. He is such an outstanding fielder. He will get you some impossible catches, get you some terrific run-outs and then with the bat and the ball, he does well," he added.

Opener Smriti Mandhana led the chase for India with familiar panache after a feisty bowling performance that steered the side to a series-clinching eight-wicket triumph over New Zealand Women in the second one-dayer here Tuesday.

Opting to field, India produced an excellent effort to bowl out New Zealand for a paltry 161 in 44.2 overs before player of the match Mandhana (90 not out) and skipper Mithali Raj (63 not out) stitched a 151-run unbroken third-wicket stand to guide the team to an easy win.

The duo resurrected the Indian run chase from 15 for 2 after the early loss of opener Jemimah Rodrigues (0) and Deepti Sharma (8).

"It feels great but I think our bowlers deserved the player of the match award more than me. I will give it away to our bowlers, they did a great job to restrict New Zealand on a good wicket," Mandhana said in the post-match presentation.

The 22-year-old Mandhana has been in excellent form in recent times and Tuesday's half century was her eighth in the last 10 ODI innings. She hit 105 in the first match of the ongoing series.

On Tuesday, she took just 82 deliveries in her unbeaten knock of 90.

Raj, on the other hand, faced 111 deliveries in her sedate knock 63. But, she was a perfect counterfoil to the aggressive Mandhana.

Raj completed the run chase in style with a six as India reached to 166 for 2 in 35.2 overs.

"I am happy with the way the team is shaping up. I have always enjoyed batting in challenging conditions. It wasn't easy, it required patience here. Smriti is in good form and somebody had to give her support," Raj said.

News brief: Big stories of the day

New Zealand won the toss and opted to bat first in the third One-Day International (ODI) against India at Mount Maunganui's Bay Oval on Monday.

After winning the toss, New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson said his team would hopefully benefit (from the pitch) in the first hour.

"We do know that If we play our best cricket, we can beat anybody. It's important we execute our plans as best as we can," he said.

There was just one change in New Zealand's playing XI with Mitchell Santner coming in for Colin de Grandhomme.

Williamson added that spin had been effective through the series and that the Bay Oval pitch will help spinners.

While Indian captain Virat Kohli, who look to seal the five-match series said, "This pitch will get slower and slower but under the lights, we felt the ball came on better, we won't mind bowling first."

India will enter the stadium with two changes in the playing XI, MS Dhoni has a sore hamstring so he has been replaced by Dinesh Karthik.

India have thrust recalled all-rounder Hardik Pandya as he replaced Vijay Shankar.

Pandya was sent home when from Australia earlier this month following allegedly sexist remarks made on a television chat show.

But he was rushed to New Zealand to rejoin the side after the suspension was lifted last Thursday.

"He brings great balance to the team. He can give you 5-6 overs and also play the big shots as well. It's brilliant, especially if you look at our away performances," said Virat on Pandya's addition.

IND vs NZ, 3rd ODI: Hardik Pandya back in playing XI, Kiwis choose to bat first

India captain Virat Kohli on Monday hoped all-rounder Hardik Pandya will come out a "better cricketer" and scale new heights after making a promising return from the suspension that followed his sexist remarks on a TV show.

Pandya, who is still facing an inquiry for his loose talk on women, did not get to bat in the third ODI against New Zealand here Monday but the 25-year-old bowled and fielded with purpose, taking two crucial wickets and a brilliant catch to send back home skipper Kane Williamson.

Kohli, after having condemned the comments made by Pandya and K L Rahul on the chat show, on Monday reserved words of encouragement for the all-rounder.

"In life, there are only two ways to deal with a situation like that. Either you hit rock bottom or you can learn from the situation and see it as a motivation to make things right," said Kohli after leading India to a series-sealing seven-wicket win over the Black Caps.

"For a cricketer, there is nothing more dear than game. You put all your energy in the game, if you respect the game, the game will respect you back. There is no rocket science."

The Indian skipper said Pandya showed the required intensity in his comeback game and is already on the road to redemption.

"You don't need do anything extra (in a situation like Pandya's). Whoever comes out of it positive, his career can scale new heights, like we have seen with many cricketers in the past.

"I hope he goes on that right path and emerges as a better cricketer and I think he can do that,"said Kohli.

Pandya was sent back home from Australia earlier this month after BCCI suspended him and Rahul pending an inquiry.

It seemed that he would also miss the entire tour of New Zealand but the Committee of Administrators (CoA) revoked their interim suspension last week and now their fate will be decided by an Ombudsman who is yet to be appointed by the Supreme Court.

Kohli said any team in the world would love to have Pandya.

"It is very very good to have him. He provides balance to the team. The way he bowled today showed that he went back and was practising his skills. You can tell with his intensity, he picked up two crucial wickets as well.

"He is someone who will give you those important contributions in all three departments. The team also looks much more balanced with him around. He is in a good head space and I hope he can continue with that," added Kohli.

Controversy can help Hardik Pandya scale new heights in career: Virat Kohli

India captain Virat Kohli, known for his fitness and strict training, dropped an easy catch of a New Zealand player Ish Sodhi in the third One-Day International on Monday.

In the 47th over, when the hosts were struggling after losing quick wickets, Sodhi was trying hard to push the run rate.

While trying to hit a big shot, Sodhi edged the ball high up on Mohammed Shami's delivery but Virat, the fielder under the ball, missed to grab the opportunity.

Virat immediately put his hands up and apologised.

He, however, took a catch of the same batsman in the same over without making any mistake at the long-on.

Even Virat Kohli drops catch, Twitterati can't believe it

Virat Kohli bowed out of the New Zealand tour with India in an unbeatable position after they won the third one-day international by seven wickets in Mount Maunganui on Monday.

With India up 3-0, world player of the year Kohli is to be rested for the remaining two matches and the following Twenty20 series.

Kohli's 60 off 74 deliveries and a 113-run partnership with Rohit Sharma saw India chase down their 244-run target with seven overs to spare.

It gave the tourists back-to-back series wins against Australia and New Zealand and ensured they will be a force to be reckoned with in the World Cup later this year.

With an unassailable lead in the five-match series, Kohli signed off his tour Down Under on a high with a first ODI series win in New Zealand in 10 years.

However, it is to be noted that prior to this, India played just one series here since the one in 2009.

Sharma top-scored with 62 while Ambati Rayudu was unbeaten on 40 and Dinesh Karthik on 38.

New Zealand, batting first, posted their highest score and longest innings in the three matches so far but they still fell short of 50 overs, their last wicket falling with six balls remaining.

Ross Taylor (93) and Tom Latham (51) gave the innings credibility but proved no challenge for the visitors.

Sharma's first wicket partnership of 39 ended when Shikhar Dhawan edged Trent Boult to the lone slip Taylor to be gone for 28.

Kohli then joined Sharma and the pair swatted the attack around the ground in their century stand for the second wicket.

New Zealand, taking a leaf from the India playbook, brought two spinners into the match after the tourists' spin twins Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal took the bulk of the wickets in the first two matches.

Ish Sodhi proved expensive but Mitchell Santner was tight and cleverly deceived Sharma to finish with one for 45.

Santner sensed Sharma was ready to dance down the wicket and served up a slower ball that deceived the opener, who was stumped by Latham.

Kohli, who averages a century every 5.6 innings, was due a big knock in New Zealand after posting 45 and 43 earlier in the series, but his attempt to drive Boult to the cover boundary was well caught by a leaping Henry Nicholls.

Boult proved the most economical of the New Zealand bowlers with two for 40.

Pandya delivered figures of two for 45 in 10 overs and choked the run flow during the middle overs. Pandya was sent home when from Australia earlier this month following allegedly sexist remarks made on a television chat show. But he was rushed to New Zealand to rejoin the side after the suspension was lifted last Thursday. "He's someone who has provided a really good balance to the side. He can give you five or six overs and pick up wickets, and then his hitting power everyone knows," said Virat on Pandya's addition.

Indian cricket team's New Zealand tour has appeared to be a one-way contest. The spin attack in skipper Virat Kohli’s arsenal has made the Kiwis batting line-up appear feeble and weak. As the two teams meet again for the third ODI on Monday, the men in blue will look to seal the series, already having a 2-0 lead in the five-match ODI series.

The third ODI is also likely to see the return of Hardik Pandya, who was suspended along with KL Rahul for his controversial remarks. The all-rounder's return will ensure balance in the ODI side, something even Kohli has admitted time and again.

His replacement Vijay Shankar, who was only given two overs in the second ODI, did not create the impact and Pandya, at No. 6, could prove useful in the batting department as well.

New Zealand will look to find the solution to the wrist-spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal, who accounted for 12 of the 20 wickets in the first two ODIs.

While Kuldeep claimed two four-wicket hauls, Chahal returned with two wickets in both the matches. Seamers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami have also contributed well in New Zealand’s demolition.

Meanwhile, in the batting department, India have benefitted with the return of Shikhar Dhawan to form. He scored an unbeaten 75 in the first ODI before making 67-ball 66 in the second game. Vice-captain Rohit Sharma made up for a poor show in the first ODI by bringing up his 14th century stand with Dhawan.

For the Black Caps, none of the other batters could convert their starts except captain Kane Williamson had top-scored in the first ODI with his 36th half-century, and all-rounder Doug Bracewell made a 46-ball 57.

India defeated New Zealand by 90 runs in the second One-Day International at Bay Oval on Saturday, taking a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.

However, focusing on the upcoming cricket World Cup, Indian skipper Virat Kohli said that scoring some quick runs in the middle overs is one area India need to work on ahead of the big tournament.

"Clinical performance again. We were really balanced with the bat. 325 was par. Not something you feel comfortable considering New Zealand's batting. But it was good to put up a balanced performance," Kohli said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

He added, "I made a conscious effort after the second drinks break to take some risks. Once I got out, the new batsman had to take time. These are the things we need to look into with the World Cup nearby."

"We would like to score those 15-20 runs extra but at the same time, good to see us chip our way to a balanced total," said Virat.

Going into World Cup, Virat Kohli says Team India need to score extra runs in middle overs

Virat Kohli tries to find joy in the simplest of things in life when he is not focussed on winning matches for India.

And nothing can beat a romantic getaway with wife Anushka by his side on a full moon night.

The insane fan following that both Kohli and his wife, a leading actress in Hindi films enjoy in India, it becomes difficult to enjoy their own little time away from public glare.

However, on tour in a scenic country like New Zealand, the Indian captain enjoys those long walks with his lady love and not being identified.

"Look me and my wife like to do normal things. We just like to go out for walks," Kohli told Sky Sports in an interview, which has also been uploaded by bcci.Tv.

"If we are in a place like Napier, it's beautiful. (One of the nights), We were at the Marine parade, enjoying full moon sitting on the bench and just talking.

"It's actually the simplest thing that gives us joy purely because we are always in the public eye and we are always doing things in-front of people. To get away and not known by anyone is something that we both like," the Indian captain said.

With 64 international hundreds, Kohli is expected to break all international records but he admits that he never thought 10 years back that he will come this far.

"When I started, if someone had told me that 10 years down the line, I would be here in my career, I would have never believed them. I play the game because of the joy that I have and purely for the love of the game and the passion that I have for playing for my country," he said.

"If I get attached to stats that means my graph is going down and there is something wrong in my head. Personally, I can't play in that sort of mindset. I can't stand on the field thinking that I have to do something for myself."

INDvsNZ: India opt to bat in 2nd ODI at Bay Oval

INDvsNZ, 2nd ODI: India register biggest ODI victory in New Zealand, here are major takeaways from match

Openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan inspired the 90-run win for India in the second One-Day International (ODI) against New Zealand at Mount Maunganui on Saturday.

With the win, India registered their biggest ODI victory in New Zealand. India's previous biggest one-day victory in New Zealand had come in 2009 when team India defeated New Zealand by 84 runs at Hamilton.

India made 324 for four with Sharma making 87 and Dhawan 66 in a 154-run partnership.

For his crucial contribution, Rohit Sharma was given Player of the Match award.

After receiving the award Rohit talked about his performance, he said, "Good feeling but more importantly, we won the match. We didn't know how the pitch will behave."

New Zealand kept losing wickets on regular intervals during their run chase as they were all out for 234 with more than nine overs remaining.

Kuldeep Yadav took a four-wicket haul.

All of the top-six New Zealand batsmen got starts in pursuit of a target of 325 that was achievable on a good pitch that offered true bounce and pace.

The hosts, however, were unable to really build any fruitful partnerships as India took wickets at times just when New Zealand appeared to be getting a slight edge in their pursuit.

Yadav destroyed New Zealand's middle order as he dismissed Tom Latham (34), Colin de Grandhomme (three) and Henry Nicholls (28) in quick succession to end any hopes of them leading a rear-guard recovery.

New Zealand's inconsistent batting - they were unable to last their full complement of overs for the second successive match - was not the only concern for coach Gary Stead as India's batsmen also highlighted the lack of penetration of their bowling attack.

India lead the five-match series 2-0 with the third match to be played in Mount Maunganui on Monday.

INDvsNZ, 2nd ODI: India beat New Zealand by 90 runs at Bay Oval

After a near perfect beginning, India would look to tighten the noose around a struggling New Zealand with a barrage of spin in the second ODI on Saturday.

New Zealand batsmen looked all at sea against India's spin duo of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal in their own backyard following a fiery spell from pacer Mohammad Shami in the opening ODI on Wednesday.

The hosts seemed rusty against a team coming off a historic tour of Australia and know beating an in-form India will be a steep climb at the Bay Oval.

Before the sun stopped play for more than 30 minutes in the series-opener, the Indian bowlers made merry with Kuldeep and Chahal sharing six wickets.

Both the wrist-spinners hunt in a pack and would be itching to have another go at the Black Caps.

Watch: Ahead of 2nd ODI, Team India gets traditional 'Maori' welcome at Bay Oval

Opener Shikhar Dhawan on Friday said the fast-tracking of Prithvi Shaw and Shubman Gill into the Indian team shows that the upcoming talent is "maturing" faster than ever before, increasing competition within the team.

While Shaw made his Test debut in October, Gill earned a maiden call-up for the ongoing ODI series against New Zealand. Both batsmen had starred in India's triumphant campaign in the U-19 World Cup in New Zealand 12 months ago.

Ahead of the World Cup, the competition within the team is fierce, especially in the middle-order.

"I think the youngsters are maturing really quickly in Indian cricket and that creates a lot of competition in the team, everyone has to be on their toes," Dhawan said ahead of the second ODI against New Zealand here on Saturday.

"Someone like a Prithvi Shaw, the way he came into the Test team and scored a century and 70 runs against the West Indies, it shows that our bench strength is also very good. So even among the 15 (squad members), we have very high competition."

On the personal front, the opener is back among runs following a lean run in the ODI series against Australia. En route his unbeaten 75 on Wednesday, Dhawan completed 5000 runs in the 50-over format.

"The milestone (5000 runs) means that I'm playing well and I am grateful for it," he said.

Did he make any changes to his game from the ODIs in Australia? "I think Australian and New Zealand conditions are quite similar. I feel that I'm an experienced player now, I came here a few years ago. So you know what to do and what not to do (in New Zealand). I know my technique suits all sorts of wickets, so I just back myself.

"I haven't worked on any footwork or technique specifically for New Zealand and even if I have, I won't tell. Once you are experienced, your mind is calm and at ease."

On his stand with captain Virat Kohli at Napier, he said: "The good thing about batting with Virat is that we rotate the strike very well and that is one thing that keeps up the pressure (on opposition)."

Upon their arrival in Tauranga, the Indian team was welcomed with the traditional Haka dance. Dhawan loved the experience.

"I like embracing other cultures. The Haka dance is famous in New Zealand and to watch it here, it was a totally different experience and I am very grateful that the locals came and performed the Haka here.

"The entire team enjoyed it, we took their blessings and we hope these blessings will work for us tomorrow," Dhawan added.

India lead the ODI series 1-0 after an eight-wicket win in Napier.

Apart from ODI, Virat has also been rested for the subsequent Twenty20 international series against New Zealand.

Ahead of the ICC World Cup 2019, BCCI is keen to manage Kohli's workload.

After the New Zealand series, India set to continue their preparation for the tournament with a limited-overs home series against Australia starting on February 24.

"Considering (Kohli's) workload in the last few months, the team management and senior selection committee is of the view that it would be ideal for him to get adequate rest ahead of the home series against Australia," the board said in a statement.

Recently, Virat became the first player in history to win the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy for ICC Cricketer of the Year, the ICC Men’s Test Player of the Year, and the ICC ODI Player of the Year awards in the same year following an extraordinary 2018.

Apart from the three prestigious awards, Kohli was also named captain of the ICC Test and ODI teams for the year.

Kohli scored 1,322 runs at an average of 55.08 in 13 Tests with five hundreds during the calendar year while in 14 ODIs he amassed 1202 runs at an astonishing average of 133.55 with six centuries. He also scored 211 runs in 10 T20Is.

While there will be no replacement named for Kohli, his deputy Rohit Sharma will lead the side in the Hamilton and Wellington ODIs before the succeeding three-match T20I series that begins on February 6.

India vs New Zealand: Virat Kohli rested for final two ODIs, T20 series

Indian openers were playing a patient inning while chasing a paltry 157 set by New Zealand at the McLean Park, Napier, before Rohit Sharma lost his wicket. He was dismissed off Doug Bracewell after making just 11 runs.

With Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli at crease, India's score stands at 62/1 after 13 overs.

Earlier, left-arm chinaman Kuldeep Yadav clinched four wickets to restrict New Zealand to a paltry 157 runs.

The host innings ended in just 38 overs with skipper Kane Williamson scoring the highest runs.

Williamson slammed a brilliant half-century to put up a decent fight but failed to find any partner at the other end as wickets kept falling at regular intervals.

Earlier, right-arm leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal dismissed Ross Taylor and wicketkeeper-batsman Tom Latham in quick succession to put India in a dominating position. Kedar Jadhav too managed to take a wicket, thanks to a brilliant catch by Kuldeep Yadav.

Pacer Mohammed Shami struck twice to dismiss New Zealand's openers early.

Opting to bat, the host lost Martin Guptill and Colin Munro for five and eight runs respectively. Both the players suffered the same fate and were clean bowled by Shami. Meanwhile, skipper Kane Williamson is going strong but requires a partner at the other end to put up a decent target for India.

Speaking after winning the toss, Williamson said, "Looks a good surface here and we want to put a score on the board. We know India are a good chasing side but we want to put runs on the board and I'm sure the surface will play the same throughout. Just the one spinner - Mitch Santner is back and also Doug Bracewell is in. It's about balancing the side, seam-bowling all-rounder is needed and that's what Bracewell comes in. I think it will be a fair pitch regardless of whether you're bowling seam, spin or batting. We were good in the SL series but want to keep improving. Looking for a good series to be played in the right spirit."

India, on the other hand, recently ended the Australia tour by creating several historic records.
