Former foreign minister and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said on Monday that India should abide by the Indus Waters Treaty and share water fairly, or else Pakistan will wage a war and ensure that our people get water from all six rivers”. Delhi unilaterally suspended the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), which governs the usage of the Indus river system, on April 23 after 26 innocent civilians were killed by Pakistan-based terrorists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. In light of the growing tension between India and Pakistan, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on Tuesday (Jun 17) announced that this year no Sikh pilgrim group would travel to Pakistan for the annual observance of Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s death anniversary.Every year, the SGPC organises religious visits to various historic gurdwaras in Pakistan, including Gurdwara Dera Sahib in Lahore, where the 19th-century Sikh ruler’s samadhi (memorial) lies. This year’s trip, scheduled around the June 29 anniversary, has now been officially called off.
What did the SGPC say?
Speaking to ANI, SGPC official Harbhajan Singh Vakta explained that the decision has been taken in light of the rising tensions between India and Pakistan in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack, in which 25 civilians were killed by terrorists."Every year, the SGPC sends a group of Sikh pilgrims to Pakistan for religious visits. One of these visits is for Maharaja Ranjit Singh's death anniversary, which is observed there on June 29. This year, we sent a batch of passports to Delhi for clearance to go to Pakistan. But now, SGPC has decided not to send the group. Our secretary officially announced this decision yesterday. Due to the current situation between the two countries, the group will not be sent this time," Vakta said.He added that the SGPC will return the passports to applicants after June 20. "People can collect their passports from our travel department after that date," he said. This development comes amid rising diplomatic and security concerns as the terror attack and subsequent military actions along the border have strained bilateral relations, prompting tighter security protocols around cross-border travel.Last year, Pakistan issued 509 visas to Sikh pilgrims from India for the same occasion. Investigators indicate that one of the prime handlers, named Ehsan-ur-Rehman alias "Danish", was a visa officer at the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi and was constantly in touch with Singh. In a shocking confession, Singh also admitted to having given his laptop to Danish at one of their meetings.Jasbir attended the Pakistan National Day event in Delhi on Danish's invitation, where he met Pakistani Army officials and vloggers. The DGP said that after Jyoti Malhotra's arrest, the accused, Jasbir, had attempted to erase all traces of his communications with these PIOs to avoid detection. Further investigations are underway to dismantle the broader espionage-terror network and identify all collaborators, he added.

According to sources close to the case, Jasbir Singh is said to have travelled to Pakistan at least six times in the past few years, each time meeting allegedly with ISI-connected people. Investigators indicate that one of the prime handlers, named Ehsan-ur-Rehman alias "Danish", was a visa officer at the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi and was constantly in touch with Singh. In a shocking confession, Singh also admitted to having given his laptop to Danish at one of their meetings. Jasbir attended the Pakistan National Day event in Delhi on Danish's invitation, where he met Pakistani Army officials and vloggers. The accused has also travelled to Pakistan on three occasions, including in 2020, 2021 and 2024, and came into direct contact with ISI officers, who subsequently cultivated and recruited him to carry out espionage activities within India, he added earlier. The DGP said that after Jyoti Malhotra's arrest, the accused, Jasbir, had attempted to erase all traces of his communications with these PIOs to avoid detection. Further investigations are underway to dismantle the broader espionage-terror network and identify all collaborators, he added.

The airstrikes of Operation Sindoor at Pakistan's Murid Air Base might have hit a reportedly underground facility, newly published high-resolution satellite images revealed. Satellite image released on Wednesday (May 28) captured widespread destruction of the Murid air base in Pakistan, including a three-metre-wide crater 30 metres from a Pakistan Air Force underground facility and damage to the roof of a building next to unmanned aerial vehicle hangars.

"This complex is heavily protected with double fencing, its own watchtowers and access control indicating its high-value nature as a target. The earth-protected entrances suggest this site might serve as storage for special equipment or as a hardened operational shelter for personnel, capable of withstanding heavy bombardment," he said. According to geo-intelligence analyst Damien Symon with the Intel Lab, the location of the crater near the underground structure has raised whispers that India targeted deep-buried targets, likely associated with Pakistan Air Force command-and-control activities or drone command. According to satellite imagery, precision-guided munitions and deep-penetration targeting were reportedly used to hit the perimeter defenses of the Air Base. If damages to the Murid Air Base are established, this would be the first instance in which India sought to incapacitate underground military infrastructure in Pakistan. Damages were also observed on the roof of the command-and-control building close to the UAV hangar. According to Symon, the hangar roof displays unmistakable signs of internal damage and a direct hit. The Murid air base is 150kms from the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. It is located in Pakistan's Chakwal, supporting the Sargodha air base and the Nur Khan air base in Rawalpindi.

The video has raised questions. While Callum, a foreigner, walked around Lahore alone without apparent concern for his safety, Jyoti was guarded. This video has fueled suspicions about the access and special treatment Jyoti enjoyed during her visits to Pakistan. Reports suggest she was invited to exclusive parties where she mingled with Pakistan’s security and intelligence officials. Authorities say Jyoti has admitted to maintaining contact with some of these officials even after returning to India. Her electronic devices are now being scrutinised by police to determine what information she may have shared with Pakistani handlers. Investigators are also probing her finances. They’ve uncovered that Jyoti lived a lifestyle far beyond her apparent means. She consistently flew first-class, stayed at luxury hotels, and dined at high-end restaurants, with trips to Pakistan that appeared to be ‘sponsored’.

The US Defence Intelligence Agency in its worldwide threat assessment report for 2025 has said that Pakistan regards India as an existential threat and will continue to pursue its military modernisation effort, including the development of battlefield nuclear weapons, to offset India’s conventional military advantage. Pakistan is modernising its nuclear arsenal and maintaining the security of its nuclear materials and nuclear command and control. Pakistan almost certainly procures WMD-applicable goods from foreign suppliers and intermediaries. The report also says that Pakistan primarily is a recipient of China’s economic and military largesse, and Pakistani forces conduct multiple combined military exercises every year with China’s PLA, including a new air exercise completed in November 2024. Foreign materials and technology supporting Pakistan’s WMD programs are very likely acquired primarily from suppliers in China, and sometimes are transshipped through Hong Kong, Singapore, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates. However, terrorist attacks targeting Chinese workers who support China-Pakistan Economic Corridor projects has emerged as a point of friction between the countries; seven Chinese nationals were killed in Pakistan in 2024. The report also says that Prime Minister Narendra Modi defense priorities will most likely focus on demonstrating global leadership, countering China, and enhancing New Dehli’s military power. India views China as its primary adversary and Pakistan more an ancillary security problem to be managed, despite cross-border attacks in mid-May by both India’s and Pakistan’s militaries. On the topic of ties between India and Russia, the report says that India will maintain its relationship with Russia through 2025 because it views its ties to Russia as important for achieving its economic and defense objectives and sees value in the relationship as a means to offset deepening Russia-China relations. Under Modi, India has reduced its procurement of Russian-origin military equipment but still relies on Russian spare parts to maintain and sustain its large inventory of Russian-origin tanks and fighter aircraft that form the backbone of its military’s ability to counter perceived threats from China and Pakistan. The Defense Intelligence Agency comes under the US Department of Defense and specialises in military intelligence. The report under the Pakistan section went on to says that during the next year, the Pakistani military’s top priorities are likely to remain cross-border skirmishes with regional neighbors, rising attacks by Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan and Baloch nationalist militants, counterterrorism efforts, and nuclear modernization.
