Operation Sindoor Anniversary: IAF Shares Special Video On First Anniversary

New Delhi: In February, Indians and Pakistanis met in Doha for Track 2 talks even as, officially, the ties between the two countries remain frosty. The Doha round was not the first in recent months, but it comes at a time when ties remain cold, as India remains concerned over cross-border terrorism supported by Pakistan in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack. For India and Pakistan, the backchannel track 2 has been continuing for decades. At one point, nearly 20 such dialogues ran simultaneously. Inputs from these help make an assessment when ties remain snapped, as they are currently. No breakthrough is expected from such engagement, but it is seen as a channel of informal communication away from public glare. No press releases are issued, no statements are made after these meetings, and above all, no one will confirm or deny them. The Neemrana Dialogue has been, in the past, one of the longest-running dialogues, bringing together voices from both sides. Track 2 is not new. The term, coined in 1981 by American diplomat Joseph Montville, describes informal, non-structured talks between non-officials, often former officials, journalists, business leaders, and civil society voices. The goal is to build trust, test ideas, and create space for understanding, away from the glare of politics and media. Unlike Track 1, formal government-to-government negotiations like the Camp David Accords, Track 2 offers deniability and flexibility. A hybrid version, Track 1.5, mixes serving officials (acting unofficially) with outsiders. This pattern repeats globally when relations sour. For example, the Oslo Accords, the initial phase (1993), when unofficial meetings in Norway between Israeli academics and PLO representatives took place. After the deadly 2020 Galwan Valley clash, India and China froze much official contact. But Track 2 exchanges helped keep lines open. High-level signals of thaw followed: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the SCO summit in Tianjin in 2025. Direct flights resumed in October 2025 after five years. Cross-border trade mechanisms and people-to-people contacts are slowly returning. Xi may even visit India for the BRICS summit later this year. In 2022, when war broke out in Ukraine, India quietly engaged in Track 2 and Track 1.5 forums with Europeans, Russians, and Ukrainians. Civil society groups and former officials explored humanitarian solutions and de-escalation ideas while New Delhi maintained its public stance of strategic autonomy. Even with Canada, when ties were at a low point after accusations over the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, pragmatism prevailed after track 1.5 diplomacy. Meetings between PM Modi and Prime Minister Mark Carney at the G7 in June 2025 and G20 in November helped stabilise ties. High commissioners returned. Carney’s visit to India in early 2026 delivered concrete outcomes: talks on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) to push bilateral trade towards $50 billion by 2030, plus cooperation in energy, critical minerals, defence and nuclear issues. Political differences were set aside for economic and strategic gains. From Pakistan to China, from Canada to conflicts, Track 2 diplomacy has proved its worth in a fractured world. It does not replace official talks but provides an opportunity to exchange notes and sometimes be part of heated debate, but above all it also provides space for quiet conversations. In some cases, it may provide a channel of communication; in other cases, seeds for future breakthroughs.

India on Monday (Mar 16) struck a careful but pointed note at the United Nations, calling for a fight against religious discrimination that is not limited to one faith. Speaking at an event jointly organised by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the United Nations Alliance of Civilisations (UNAOC) on International Day to Combat Islamophobia, Indian Ambassador Harish Parvathaneni took a pointed dig at Pakistan. 'What about Ahmadiyyas?': India slams Pakistan at UN for 'fabricating imaginative tales of Islamophobia'

India on Wednesday (Feb 25) slammed Pakistan at the 61st Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, with a pointed remark noting that Islamabad must be "hallucinating or living in la la land" if it believes development in Jammu and Kashmir was not real. The comment came during India’s Right to Reply at the session in Geneva, where New Delhi pushed back against allegations raised by Pakistan and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
India slams Pak's ‘hallucinations’, reiterates Kashmir an ‘integral and inalienable’ part of territory
India's representative Anupama Singh accused Islamabad of recycling propaganda and said the OIC had allowed itself to become an "echo chamber" for one member state. "We categorically reject these allegations," she said, adding that Pakistan’s repeated claims “reek of envy.”Singh also reiterated India's position on Jammu and Kashmir and said that it "was, is, and will always remain an integral and inalienable part of India." She said the region's accession in 1947 was "completely legal and irrevocable," grounded in the Indian Independence Act and international norms."The only outstanding dispute regarding this region is the illegal occupation of Indian territories by Pakistan," she noted, calling on Islamabad to vacate areas under its control.Watch what India's representative Anupama Singh said here:

Development versus crisis
Singh's sharpest remark came when she pointed to recent infrastructure projects in the region, including the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest railway bridge, inaugurated last year."If the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest bridge, inaugurated in Jammu and Kashmir last year, is fake, then Pakistan must be hallucinating or living in the 'La-la-land'" Singh said.Contrasting what she described as Jammu and Kashmir's expanding development budget with Pakistan’s economic troubles, she then claimed that the Union Territory's development budget was "more than double the recent bailout package", the size of Pakistan’s recent IMF bailout package.Responding to Pakistan's criticism of India’s democratic record in the region, Singh said it was "hard to take lectures on democracy from a country where civilian governments rarely complete their terms." She pointed to voter participation in recent elections as evidence that people in Jammu and Kashmir have "rejected the ideology of terrorism and violence" for development.Singh also accused Pakistan of continuing to back militancy in the region, calling it "relentless state-sponsored terrorism."

US President Donald Trump has claimed that during last year’s military escalation between India and Pakistan, as many as 11 jets were shot down — a figure he repeated while asserting he helped broker a ceasefire by threatening trade penalties. India has consistently rejected any third‑party mediation in the conflict, saying de‑escalation was agreed directly between the two militaries.

A newly released report by a Swiss defence think tank says that India’s Operation Sindoor in May 2025 fundamentally changed the air power balance in South Asia, ending with New Delhi securing effective control of the skies and forcing Pakistan to agree to a ceasefire within four days. The study, published by Switzerland’s Centre for Military History and Perspective Studies (CHPM) and written by military historian Adrien Fontanellaz, reconstructs in detail the 88-hour aerial confrontation between India and Pakistan from May 7 to May 10. It stands out as one of the most thorough independent examinations of the conflict to date. According to the report, India ultimately dismantled Pakistan’s air defence posture and strike capability, finishing the conflict on its own strategic terms. Operation Sindoor followed a deadly terror attack on civilians in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which Indian authorities attributed to Pakistan-based terrorist organisations. The report says that India’s political leadership authorised a response designed to be highly visible and forceful, accepting escalation risks to re-establish deterrence. Also Read: UAE pulls back from Pakistan airport deal. Here's what reports are saying
When did Operation Sindoor happen?
In the early hours of May 7, the Indian Air Force conducted coordinated precision strikes against major terrorist hubs associated with Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba. Facilities in Bahawalpur and Muridke were hit using long-range weapons, with damage assessments confirming extensive destruction. The Swiss study notes that the scale, depth, and joint planning of these attacks exceeded any previous Indian response. Pakistan reacted, leading to one of the largest aerial confrontations in the region in recent decades. Dozens of aircraft from both sides were involved across multiple fronts. Leveraging Chinese-origin PL-15 missiles, airborne early warning platforms, and networked targeting, the Pakistan Air Force inflicted losses on Indian formations during the first night. India's air superiority during Operation Sindoor forced Pakistan for ceasefire: Swiss think tank

This phase, the report says, gave Islamabad an early narrative advantage despite being tactically limited in scope. Where all did the Indian Air Force hit in Pakistan? Nikkhil Advani’s latest web series, Freedom At Midnight Season 2, which was released last week, is a must-watch for the times we live in. In an era of war, where bigotry has become an intrinsic part of everyday life, the series urges us to look back in order to understand what truly holds a diverse country like India together.Without sermonising or softening the truth, it highlights the social fabric on which India was founded—one woven with ideals of peace, harmony, and secularism. The show, based on Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre's expansive novel by the same name, talks of the incidents and decisions that paved the way for India’s independence and the formation of Pakistan. Brilliantly adapted by writer Abhinandan Gupta, the show beautifully highlights the pain and the anguish of not just the people but also our leaders during the partition of India- a decision which was taken by a handful of men but defined the future of millions of people.
Humanising our leaders
Partition has been a subject of interest for many writers and filmmakers over the years. It has been 78 years since India got its freedom, but Partition remains one of the most harrowing incidents in history- scars of that moment have left deep wounds on families for generations. Season 2 begins with Mountbatten ordering Sir Radcliffe to do the needful and draw the lines that would divide the Hindu and Muslim populations into two countries. While Mountbatten seemed nonchalant, it is Sir Radcliffe who seemed reluctant (or so says the show). How to divide people who have lived together in harmony for generations? How to remove people from their origin? A task that seemed monumental and heavy on Radcliffe’s shoulders despite years of experience. While the first season concentrated on the incidents and moments that led to the Independence, season two shows Independent India grappling with a multitude of problems. The partition that has torn apart the country, the accession of princely states into the newly formed union, and the Hindu-Muslim riots that ravaged the streets of Calcutta and Lahore. It is a time when both India and Pakistan are taking the first steps as independent nations. While there are celebrations on the streets, the series shows the leaders in anguish- especially Nehru- conscious of how they have had to lose out on a huge chunk of the population and land to satisfy Jinnah’s wishes and carve out Pakistan. Jinnah, for obvious reasons, is shown as this mad egotistical man, who was adamant to have a Muslim state- the writers also add a human side to the maglanomaniac. A poignant scene shows Jinnah looking lonely at his home in India, one last time as he leaves for Pakistan. No words are spoken, but actor Arif Zakaria, who plays Jinnah in the show, emotes through sheer expressions, delivering how even the toughest of men had a softer side- especially when it came to one’s home and motherland.
Freedom, but at what cost?
Freedom at Midnight, in fact, has some of the most poignant moments, which constantly make you realise that the decision of Partition was not an easy one- and one that never let the leaders rest easy. As Nehru (Sidhant Gupta) delivers the historic ‘At The Stroke of Midnight’ speech at the parliament, celebrations erupt across the nation. Men and women take to the streets to celebrate, and Gandhi(Chirag Vohra) is shown lying in an empty room, facing the wall, unwilling to celebrate the moment that would define Indian history and a moment that he had yearned and strived for decades. The beauty lies in the detailed screenplay, which shows Gandhi tearing up at the stroke of midnight as India makes its tryst with destiny. The emotions are perhaps due to a sense of failure, for he is conscious of how the much yearned-for independence has come at a cost.
The problematic neighbour
Freedom at Midnight was released a month after the country was treated to a blitzkrieg called Dhurandhar. Most of us have watched Aditya Dhar’s detailed, somewhat gory and very long spy thriller. Dhar’s film and Advani’s series both show the complexities that come with having Pakistan as a neighbour. But the treatment is starkly different. Dhar’s film pumps the adrenaline, making you feel aggressively angry towards the neighbour. Freedom of Midnight instead makes you question the divisive politics that the leaders sought in order to get freedom in the first place. A moment in the series has Nehru and Jinnah standing in their respective homes, perhaps reflecting on what has led to the decision of partition, while Gandhi’s voice looms over in the background, foretelling how a decision of a handful of men will cost the future of billions in both countries. The poignant moment makes you think hard. Was the two-nation theory really worth it? For over seven decades, the two countries have been warring, and there have been more losses than gains for both countries. Back then, people lost their homes, their childhood, and their wealth due to partition; now, people lose their lives and homes due to war and cross-border terrorism. It's a choice that one must make- which costs us more, to live peacefully or constantly wanting to be at war. Before anyone jumps in to question whether the show is pro-Pakistan, it must be reiterated that the show is actually pro-peace, pro-secularism, where a PM Nehru is shown constantly pushing for the secular fabric of the newly formed democratic country. Sure, it shies away from naming Nathuram Godse as Gandhi’s murderer instead resorting to a show figure, and instead concentrates on a certain Pahwa- a man anguished at Gandhi’s empathy towards the Muslim brothers in post- partition India, but the show constantly reiterates how the leaders could never fully be free from the burden that Partition bore. It came with a cost, and as Gandhi points out, its impact continues to dominate the politics of the subcontinent, decades later. Freedom at Midnight, Season 1 and 2, are streaming on Sony Liv.

Asia One, launched after the India-Pakistan conflict of May 2025, after the Pahalgam terror attack by Pakistan-trained terrorists, was seen as part of Pakistan's information warfare and was used to spread misinformation. Many of its correspondents have been regularly churning out anti-India misinformation. A recent report by the channel was fact-checked by India's Foreign Ministry.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal triggered a sharp reaction on Monday (December 8) with a pointed remark about Pakistan’s internal political situation, suggesting that “democracy and Pakistan don’t go together.” His comment came during the ministry’s weekly briefing, when he was asked about the deteriorating democratic climate in Pakistan, particularly regarding former prime minister Imran Khan and the ongoing unrest. Jaiswal said India is closely monitoring developments across the border but chose not to elaborate. “We monitor everything happening in Pakistan. As for democracy, you said it is weakening there. Democracy and Pakistan don't go together, so it’s best not to say more,” he remarked.
On Pakistan–Afghanistan border tensions
Addressing a separate question about recent clashes along the Pakistan–Afghanistan border, Jaiswal expressed India’s concern over reports of Afghan civilian deaths. “We have seen reports of border clashes in which several Afghan civilians have been killed. We condemn such attacks on innocent Afghan people. India strongly supports the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence of Afghanistan,” he added. At least five people were killed after heavy gunfire was exchanged between Pakistani and Afghan forces on Friday, news agency Reuters reported, worsening relations following the collapse of peace talks the previous weekend.
Watch the video here

Escalating political turmoil in Pakistan
Jaiswal’s comments coincided with escalating political tensions in Pakistan. Earlier in the week, Pakistan’s military issued an unusually blunt criticism of Imran Khan. Military spokesperson Lt. Gen. Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry, without naming him directly, described the imprisoned ex-prime minister as a “mentally ill” narcissist, according to the news agency Associated Press. The military’s statement came a day after Khan posted on X, calling Army Chief Gen. Asim Munir a “mentally unstable individual” whom he blamed for the breakdown of Pakistan’s constitutional order. Khan, 73, has been incarcerated since 2023 following a corruption conviction and continues to face several legal challenges. His party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), has repeatedly demanded consistent access for his family and supporters amid persistent speculation over his health and circulating false rumours of his death. Last week, authorities at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi allowed Khan’s sister, Uzma Khanum, to meet him, according to Dawn. Meanwhile, PTI activists staged protests outside the Islamabad High Court and the jail, decrying restrictions on visitation and demanding greater transparency regarding Khan’s condition.

'Democracy and Pakistan don't go together': India reacts sharply to Pakistan’s deepening political crisis

On Pakistan–Afghanistan border tensions Addressing a separate question about recent clashes along the Pakistan–Afghanistan border, Jaiswal expressed India’s concern over reports of Afghan civilian deaths. John Kiriakou, a former CIA officer and whistleblower, recently shared an extraordinary story of how he received threats from Pakistan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, following comments he made about the India-Pakistan conflict. India has once again taken a firm stance against Pakistan at the United Nations, during a Security Council debate focused on women, peace, and security. In his speech, India’s permanent representative to the UN, Parvathaneni Harish, accused Pakistan of continuing its ‘delusional tirades’ against India, particularly regarding Jammu and Kashmir. Harish remarked that Pakistan’s unrelenting claims over Kashmir were baseless and urged the international community to see through Pakistan’s manipulation. He also condemned Islamabad for its dismal record on women’s rights, highlighting the country's historical violations. "Pakistan’s claims are an exercise in hyperbole, designed to mislead the world,” Harish said. He referred to Pakistan’s 1971 military operation, Operation Searchlight, as an example of Pakistan’s disregard for human rights, citing the systematic genocide and mass rape of over 400,000 women by Pakistani forces during the operation.
Watch the video here

The Indian diplomat’s remarks came in response to a speech by Pakistan’s counsellor at the UN, Saima Saleem, who discussed the suffering of Kashmiri women under Indian rule. Saleem claimed that sexual violence in Kashmir has been used as a weapon of war for decades, and emphasised the role of international organisations such as Human Rights Watch in documenting these alleged violations. Saleem also argued that excluding Kashmiri women from the women, peace, and security agenda undermines the legitimacy of the UN’s work, as the Jammu and Kashmir dispute is a central issue for the Security Council.
What was Operation Searchlight?
Operation Searchlight was a military operation conducted by the Pakistani Army in 1971, aimed at quelling the independence movement in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). The operation resulted in the deaths of between 300,000 to 3,000,000 people, with reports of mass sexual violence and systemic rape affecting up to 400,000 women. The atrocities of Operation Searchlight prompted millions of refugees to flee to neighbouring India, which intervened militarily in support of East Pakistan’s independence, leading to the creation of Bangladesh.
India’s rebuke of Pakistan’s PM at UN
This latest verbal exchange comes after India sharply criticised Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the UN General Assembly. Sharif presented wrong facts regarding Operation Sindoor and Pakistan's supposed victory during the May standoff between the two countries.

Air Chief Marshal AP Singh on Saturday credited India's political will for the success of Operation Sindoor against Pakistan, saying no restrictions were put on the military. 'We had full freedom': IAF chief lauds 'political will' during Operation Sindoor

Air Chief Marshal AP Singh on Saturday revealed the extent of damage the Indian military wreaked on the Pakistan Air Force during Operation Sindoor in May. He said the Indian forces downed at least five Pakistani fighter jets and another large aircraft during the four-day-long conflict. While six aircraft were shot down in the air, at least two were destroyed on the ground. Among the likely Pakistani casualties was an Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS), which was crucial for Pakistan's air strength. "We have at least five fighters' confirmed kills and one large aircraft, which could be either an ELINT aircraft or an AEW &C aircraft, which was taken on at a distance of about 300 kilometres. This is the largest ever recorded surface-to-air kill that we can talk about," he said. Air Chief Marshal Singh, speaking at the annual 16th Air Chief Marshal LM Katre Lecture in Bengaluru, said the Russia-made S-400 air defence system shot down the Pakistani aircraft. "Our air defence systems have done a wonderful job. The S-400 system, which we recently bought, has been a game-changer. The range of that system has kept their aircraft away from their weapons like those long-range glide bombs that they have; they have not been able to use any one of those because they have not been able to penetrate the system," he added.

In May, India destroyed nine terrorist bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. Islamabad reacted with attacks on Indian civilian areas and military installations. The Indian military thwarted most of these attacks and later attacked air bases deep inside Pakistan. After four days of intense conflict, Pakistan's DGMO was forced to call his Indian counterpart, urging a cessation of hostilities. ACM AP Singh said none of the Pakistani aircraft could come close to the Indian borders because of India's robust air defence. "None of their aircraft could come anywhere near the boundaries of Akash and even MRSAM. All their aircraft were taken on by LRSAM because they were trying to stay away, but still, they were within our range at times, and that is the opportunity targets that we got. As far as our offence was concerned, that night we didn't have any hold bar and we decided that we would go attack at Pan Front, we would stretch resources. The idea was once again not to attack one particular airfield and decimate that airfield. The idea was to give him that feeling or give him that indication that look, we can attack you deep inside, at will, wherever we want to...Bholari, an AEW&C hangar, was attacked," he added.

In the age of hyper-connectivity, truth moves swiftly — but lies move swifter. A tweet, a doctored photo, or even a single misleading statement can cascade on social media, stir emotions, and create narratives ahead of the facts catching up. Geopolitical crises and wars have never not been information wars, but now, with Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Telegram, and TikTok, speed, reach, and impact of disinformation have never been higher. We are an age where a tweet can either destroy or make a career. The stakes are enormous — not only for public individuals, but for regular folks whose lives can be irreparably altered by a viral lie. And the conflicts of our times — India–Pakistan tensions, the Iran–Israel conflict, the Russia–Ukraine war — have demonstrated just how perilous this online wildfire can be.
Why social media is a misinformation machine?
The design of social media itself is based on virality, not verification. Instant reach, no vetting: Anybody can share anything, and it could be seen by millions in minutes — without being checked. Algorithms amplify outrage: Material that evokes high emotions gets promoted to the top of a feed. Sadly, false or misleading information tends to be more emotive than accurate news. Echo chambers make the belief stronger: Individuals often follow those who share their view, and this makes misinformation "common knowledge" in those circles. This is fatal during times of war or crisis, when emotions are already high and people are eager to get updates.
Case Studies: Misinformation in contemporary conflicts
India–Pakistan: At the time of high-tension Indian–Pakistani military confrontations, manipulated videos and Photoshopped images have consistently gone viral. In 2019, during the Balakot airstrikes incident, random footage of old military operations was shared as "breaking news." Memes, fabricated quotes, and attributed statements fueled public opinion on both sides and added to the hostilities. Iran–Israel: When the tensions between Iran and Israel escalated, social media overflowed with mistranslations, doctored photographs, and even AI-composed "battlefield" pictures. Some of them were tweeted by popular handles and even caught by minor news websites before being corrected. When the misinformation propagated, the retractions hardly reached a quarter of the initial crowd. Russia–Ukraine: Few, if any, wars in the modern era have witnessed the weaponisation of disinformation as extensively as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Political figures were duped with deepfake videos, footage of past combat being recycled as "current" incidents, and made-up casualty figures were circulated extensively. These were intentionally designed by state or state-sponsored actors to manipulate narratives and shape global opinion.
The reputation impact
It's not only governments and militaries that are impacted. One post here can ruin a reputation in a night. Reporters have been trolled, threatened, and discredited from out-of-context screenshots or doctored quotes. Celebrities and public figures have been hammered for comments they never made — simply because someone uploaded a realistic fake. Average citizens have been "doxxed" or hassled after being mistakenly identified in viral war videos. In such a weather, silence is sometimes more secure than voice — but even silence may be seen as taking sides.
The bottom line
Social media is not evil by nature — but it is by nature susceptible to being manipulated. In times of war, the truth tends to get destroyed first, and algorithms that prioritise speed over accuracy only make that poorer. The world we now inhabit requires a new type of literacy: the capacity to filter fact from fiction at the pace of a scroll. Whether you are a reporter, an elected official, or simply a regular user, one post can destroy or solidify your credibility. Caveat emptor — because in this digital space, the ill-advised line at the wrong time can alter everything. Disclaimer: The views of the writer do not represent the views of WION or ZMCL. The monsoon session of the Indian Parliament kicks off on Monday (Jul 21). As per reports the Indian Parliament is set for a stormy monsoon session, as the opposition INDIA bloc prepares to grill the Narendra Modi government on contentious issues like national security lapses and US President Donald Trump's repeated claims of brokering a "ceasefire" between India and Pakistan during the recent tensions, to voter rights and Jammu & Kashmir's statehood. Amid demands for an all-party meeting, the Centre has reportedly indicated its readiness to discuss issues of "great importance to the nation," saying it would "never shy away from a discussion".
Opposition mounting an attack on the Modi government?
Reports suggest that the opposition INDIA bloc, from which the Aam Aadmi Party recently exited, is gearing up to confront the government on a raft of issues it claims are being mishandled or suppressed. At the heart of the opposition's agenda is the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and the Indian military's subsequent response—Operation Sindoor. The INDIA alliance is demanding answers from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on both the operation and what it calls a glaring intelligence failure that led to the death of 26 civilians. In an online strategy meeting on Saturday, 24 opposition parties have agreed to a joint plan to target the government over at least eight key concerns. 'Vote bandi': Opposition to grill Modi government on Pahalgam, Trump, and more during Parliament Monsoon session

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday (Jul 12) ruled out the possibility of nuclear escalation during the recent cross-border conflict with India, stating that Islamabad's nuclear arsenal was solely for "peaceful purposes and self-defence". Speaking to a group of students in Islamabad, Sharif said Pakistan responded to Indian military strikes with "full might" during the four-day confrontation, which followed the deadly April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, India, that killed 26 civilians. The Pakistani PM also revealed the number of casualties Pakistan suffered in the conflict with India.
'Not for aggression'
The Pakistani prime minister said that Islamabad's nuclear programme was "solely for peaceful purposes and national defence, not for aggression." Looking back at the four-day military confrontation with neighbour India, he claimed that 55 Pakistanis were killed during Indian military strikes under Operation Sindoor — a coordinated offensive targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The strikes on May 7 targeted nine terror hubs, including in Bahawalpur, a known stronghold of the banned Jaish-e-Mohammad group. He said that India has set a "new normal" in responding to terror attacks by hitting back in a way that terrorists understand. “Talks and terror cannot go together, terror and trade cannot go together, and water and blood cannot go together,” he had said during the televised address. Meanwhile, Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has posed the idea that Pakistan's nuclear arsenal should be under the surveillance of the UN's atomic energy agency: "I wanted to raise this question for the world: are nuclear weapons safe in the hands of a rogue and irresponsible nation?" he said, adding "I believe that Pakistan's atomic weapons should be brought under the surveillance of the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency)".

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday (Jul 12) ruled out the possibility of nuclear escalation during the recent cross-border conflict with India, stating that Islamabad's nuclear arsenal was solely for "peaceful purposes and self-defence". 'Nukes for peace, not aggression': Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif rules out nuclear escalation with India, admits 55 killed in Operation Sindoor

Pakistan’s former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has hinted that Pakistan would not have any issues with the extradition of 'individuals of concern if India is refusing to comply with certain basic elements.' Soon after his statement, it was pointed out that there is no extradition treaty between India and Pakistan. However, there are two ways in which Islamabad can still extradite terrorists to India: India proposed an extradition treaty with Pakistan in 2004, which Islamabad has not yet responded. India also made a formal extradition request for terrorists living in Pakistan in 2023, but Islamabad acknowledged it but has not responded positively. In fact, in both cases, it has highlighted that there is an absence of a formal extradition treaty between the two countries. However, as per international law of double criminality, individuals can be extradited even if there is no agreement on extradition agreement between the two countries. Though the process is lengthy, political will can at least start the process - something that seems highly unlikely in the current political situation in Pakistan.
Bilawal Bhutto's remark about the extradition of terrorists to India
Speaking to Al Jazeera, Bilawal, who also heads the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), said that such a move could be part of a “comprehensive dialogue” between the two countries, where terrorism is discussed as a key issue. "India is refusing to comply with certain basic elements that require that conviction to take place," Bilawal alleged, pointing to the need for Indian witnesses to testify in Pakistani courts. "If India is willing to be cooperative in that process, I am sure there will be no hurdle in extraditing any individual of concern", he added. "As part of a comprehensive dialogue with Pakistan, where terrorism is one of the issues that we discuss, I am sure Pakistan would not be opposed to any of these things," he said. On being asked to disclose the whereabouts of Saeed and Azhar, the PPP chief said, “It is factually not correct that Hafiz Saeed is a free man; he is in the custody of the Pakistani state,” adding that Islamabad has been unable to arrest Azhar. “It is our belief that he is in Afghanistan," Bilawal said. “If and when the Indian government shares information that he is on Pakistani soil, we will be more than happy to arrest him," he added.
Hafiz Saeed and Masood Azhar
Hafiz Saeed - the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack mastermind, and Masood Azhar are among India's most wanted terrorists. Saeed is currently serving a 33-year sentence for terror financing and has reportedly been lodged in Lahore's Kot Lakhpat Jail since 2019. However, reports suggest that his jail term is a show-off by the Pakistani administration to avoid FATF blockage, while in reality, he enjoys free hand. Azhar is the mastermind of several terror attacks in India, including the 2001 Parliament attack, the 2016 Pathankot airbase strike, and the 2019 Pulwama terror attack. India released Azhar from its custody in 1999 as part of a hostage swap deal during the Flight 814 Kandahar hijack. Both LeT and JeM have been banned by Pakistan, according to the National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA). Azhar is also a UN-designated global terrorist and has been proscribed by NACTA and living in an undisclosed place for the last many years.
