Chief of Defence Staff General NS Raja Subramani on Wednesday (Oct 04) announced a two-year extension of the engagement period under the Centre's Agnipath scheme, a move that lets the majority of Agniveers stay in service and eventually join the Armed Forces. Under the updated scheme, 75 per cent of Agniveers who were earlier set to exit will now be offered an additional two-year engagement period, after which willing recruits can be enrolled into the Armed Forces. The announcement came as the first batch of Agniveers nears the end of its four-year tenure."Today is a very significant day for the Indian Defence Forces and for our 'Agniveers'. In a moment of pride for India, a new World Bank report has highlighted how the country has recorded one of the world’s fastest declines in poverty.According to the report, India has made remarkable progress in reducing poverty across different parameters. A staggering 49.6 crore people were lifted out of poverty between 2011 and 2023, as the share of those living on less than $4.2 per day fell from 57.7 per cent to 16.1 per cent. This is expected to decline further to 12.1 per cent by 2028.When it comes to extreme poverty, which measures people living on less than $3 per day, India has also made significant progress. The figure fell from 27.1 per cent in 2011 to 2.6 per cent in 2023.While living standards improved across most states, households in a contiguous belt stretching from Uttar Pradesh to West Bengal account for about 57 per cent of India's poor population. But what is behind India's success story?According to the World Bank, rising employment is one of the key factors. Between 2017 and 2023, 13.4 crore more people got jobs. This was nearly twice the growth in the working-age population.

Crucially, much of this gain was driven by more rural women entering the workforce. This, in turn, raised the number of earning members per household. The report also highlighted that labour force participation and employment rates remain resilient. The World Bank has also attributed India's drastic poverty reduction to stronger consumption growth and expanded social transfers, including food subsidies.Apart from subsidised ration, the Government of India has been providing five kilograms of free ration every month to at least 81 crore beneficiaries since the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020.Speaking at a public event marking 25 years in public service, PM Modi presented India's achievement on the poverty front as a reflection of the collective efforts of 140 crore Indians.Amid the substantial reduction in poverty, the World Bank also issued a note of caution. The gap between the country's highest-paid and lowest-paid workers remains high, with the top 10 per cent earning around 13 times more than the bottom 10 per cent.Nevertheless, the World Bank's report signals how India is effectively dealing with challenges as it races towards becoming the world's third-largest economy.

The Ministry of Communications has unequivocally stated its position on the regulatory framework for satellite communication services. The Ministry said that India's policies in this sphere are fair and non-discriminatory. Three residents of Gujarat who disappeared in Ethiopia while allegedly travelling towards the United States through an illegal migration network have made it back to India, bringing an anxious search by their families to an end. Rutvik Jansari, Mamta Chavda and Mayuri arrived at Mumbai airport around 3 am on Thursday (Oct 1) and were later headed towards Mehsana, police said. Their return was facilitated through coordination between Indian authorities and the Ministry of External Affairs.<h2>What happened after they left Gujarat?</h2>The three had set out from Gujarat on September 20, allegedly after paying intermediaries a huge sum to organise their journey to the US. Their route reportedly passed through Jaipur and Abu Dhabi before they reached Ethiopia.Their families were unable to contact them after September 22. Concern over their whereabouts led Mamta’s father, Kirit Chauhan, to approach Langhnaj police.“They reached Mumbai airport at 3 am on Thursday (Oct 1) with the help and coordination of the Ministry of External Affairs and other local authorities. They are on their way to Mehsana, their hometown,” Langhnaj Police Inspector Ankush Gehlot told IANS.<h2>‘Khan’ allegedly demands Rs 1 crore</h2>The disappearance took a more serious turn when a man identifying himself as “Khan” allegedly contacted the families. He reportedly demanded Rs 1 crore for the trio’s release.Rutvik’s grandfather, Kanubhai Jansari, had previously claimed that Rs 60 lakh was paid after the three were allegedly taken captive. Despite the payment, the alleged ransom demand reportedly continued.Police are examining a possible connection to the Baba Khan network.“The abductors have reportedly been found to be from the Baba Khan network. The matter is currently being investigated,” Gehlot said.<h2>Police investigate intermediaries</h2>The police investigation has also turned its focus towards the intermediaries who allegedly arranged the journey.According to the complaint, the families initially contacted a person known as Jitubhai. He allegedly introduced them to Mehsana-based agent Alpesh Patel, who then connected them with Bhargav Patel from Vadodara. The alleged cost of the journey was around Rs 75 lakh per person. Family members had earlier told reporters that they paid approximately Rs 70 lakh each.Mamta had reportedly made six unsuccessful attempts to secure a US visa. Her husband, Chiragkumar, had travelled to America roughly six months earlier on a student visa.<h2>Gujarat’s recurring illegal migration cases</h2>The incident is part of a wider pattern involving Gujaratis taking risky routes in attempts to reach the US. In 2022, four members of a family from Dingucha froze to death while trying to enter the US from Canada. A Mehsana family drowned in the St Lawrence River in 2023 during another attempted crossing.More recently, in May 2025, a Mehsana family was aboard a vessel that capsized off California while allegedly attempting to enter the US from Mexico.Investigators are now examining the alleged abduction, the ransom calls and the intermediaries who arranged the trio’s journey.

The Supreme Court on Friday (Sep 18) questioned the efficacy of complete prohibition on liquor, pointing to five consequences it said are often associated with such bans, including loss of government revenue, the cost of enforcement, police corruption, illegal distilling and a resulting drug menace.A bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and K Vinod Chandran made the observations while striking down Rules 18A and 18B of the Maharashtra Poisons Rules, 1972. The provisions restricted the purchase of methanol and required manufacturers to add a bitterant and colourant before selling it to non-drug manufacturers. The rules were introduced after the 1991 Mumbai hooch tragedy, in which 93 people died after consuming spurious liquor containing methanol. While allowing petitions filed by several chemical manufacturers, including the Indian Chemical Council, the bench examined whether Maharashtra's safeguards actually addressed the risk of methanol being diverted for making illicit liquor. Also read | <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/tirupati-laddu-ghee-adulterated-with-chemicals-says-ed-supplier-arrested-1789798536488">Tirupati Laddu ghee adulterated with chemicals, says ED, supplier arrested</a><h2>Gujarat's prohibition model under scrutiny</h2>The court referred to Gujarat while discussing the broader question of prohibition and its unintended consequences.“History bears eloquent testimony to the fact that a complete alcohol ban often drives the liquor trade underground, increasing the prevalence of unregulated, lethal brews,” the bench said.It noted that Gujarat has maintained a strict prohibition policy since its formation in 1960 but has nevertheless witnessed at least 10 major mass hooch tragedies, resulting in more than 600 deaths. The court also referred to recent incidents in Bhavnagar in Gujarat and Sagar in Madhya Pradesh, where around 13 and 15 people respectively died after consuming illicit liquor. “These should be a reminder for the authorities to wake up and act,” the bench said.<h2>SC rejects Maharashtra government's defence</h2>The Maharashtra government had defended the methanol-related rules as a measure to prevent diversion and reduce the possibility of fatal hooch tragedies. The Supreme Court, however, held that the requirement to add bitterant and colourant lacked a rational and proximate connection with that objective.“The state failed to indicate that this practice of putting such additives would discourage or rather dissuade continuous usage of methanol or affect its chemical composition so it cannot be used in making spurious liquor,” the bench said. The court also questioned how the measure would prevent the manufacture of illicit liquor using other adulterants. It stressed that while the prevention of methanol-related deaths was a legitimate public health objective, measures adopted by the state still had to meet constitutional standards of reasonableness and proportionality. Also read | <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/nandigram-arrest-row-congress-cries-vendetta-rival-trinamool-says-warrants-must-be-executed-1789800390247">Nandigram arrest row: Congress cries vendetta, rival Trinamool says warrants "must be executed"</a><h2>Rules violate constitutional rights</h2>The bench said financial hardship or commercial inconvenience alone would not be enough to invalidate a law. Meta India representatives appeared before India’s National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) after the child rights body summoned the company’s managing director and head over serious allegations involving Instagram advertisements.

The inquiry follows a BBC investigation that alleged paid Instagram advertisements were being used to promote child sexual exploitation and abuse material, with users reportedly directed to Telegram channels where such material was allegedly sold.

The NCPCR took suo motu cognizance of the report and later opened a formal inquiry after reviewing Meta’s response. Separately, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed Delhi Police to investigate the allegations and examine whether Meta and other concerned entities complied with mandatory reporting obligations under the POCSO Act.

Both proceedings are currently focused on establishing the facts and determining whether any legal or regulatory obligations were breached.

IIT researchers called to help relocate Lord Khade Hanuman idol safely after all efforts fail

In what devotees are calling a miracle, all efforts to remove a 170-year-old Lord Hanuman idol in Ujjain, a city in the state of Madhya Pradesh, for an upcoming festival failed. Simhastha 2028 is set to take place in Ujjain from March 27, 2028, to May 27, 2028. It is celebrated every 12 years in the city. For this purpose, authorities are widening roads. The 170-year-old Khade Hanuman temple is also supposed to be relocated. A special vehicle was arranged to shift the 8-foot idol of Lord Hanuman, which is in a standing pose in the temple.&nbsp;While workers removed parts of the temple, locals say the idol itself did not budge despite hours of effort. Three teams reportedly worked for 48 hours to remove the Hanuman idol but failed. It has been over four days since work started, and engineers are left scratching their heads for a solution.&nbsp;&nbsp;They used all kinds of heavy machinery to safely remove the idol, but nothing worked. The scene turned emotional for devotees who flocked to pay their obeisance to the monkey god. Some people also claim that as workers tried to move the idol, nearly 50 monkeys gathered at the site. &nbsp;

<h2>Mystery of the Ujjain Lord Hanuman idol - Why is it not moving?</h2>&nbsp;While devotees are calling it a miracle, saying that the lord does not want to move, engineers are faced with a tough task. Some reports on the internet suggest that the reason why engineers are finding it extremely hard to remove the idol is that it is deeply embedded in a fragile subterranean foundation. It is likely connected to old interlocking stone structures. Extreme force can crack this ancient stone. So they have stopped the use of heavy excavators and have instead deployed advanced underground scanning technology to safely inspect the base. Meanwhile, the temple priest, Mahesh Bairagi, told local outlet MP Tak that this should be taken as a sign from God that he does not want to leave this place. "I humbly request authorities to understand the situation. Even if it is crucial to remove the idol, they should take all precautions to ensure that it is re-established just like it is right now. Unless they find a safe way to do that, officials should force it."&nbsp; Some stories about the temple also claim that the temple and the idol could be much older than 170 years. Authorities do not find themselves in a catch-22 situation, where they have to navigate through people's devotion and also make the ground changes needed for the Simhastha 2028 festival.

The 170-year-old Khade Hanuman idol in a temple in Ujjain has remained stuck in its place despite all efforts to remove it. Even the heaviest machinery has not been able to budge it a bit. While devotees think it is a miracle, the secret likely lies in its ancient foundation.

Delhi Traffic Police have begun rehearsals for foreign leaders and their motorcades, with restrictions covering more than 35 roads and 22 diversion points. Commuters in central, south and southwest Delhi could face diversions, temporary road closures and longer travel times.

Major routes including Sardar Patel Marg, Janpath, Ashoka Road, Mathura Road, Lodhi Road and Africa Avenue are among those affected by the traffic plan. The biggest disruption is expected as foreign leaders and delegations begin arriving around September 10, with restrictions potentially continuing until their departure around September 14.

Adding to the challenge, heavy rain has already caused waterlogging in parts of Delhi, including areas near Indira Gandhi International Airport, while further rain and thunderstorms are forecast around the summit period.

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat addressed a Universal Oneness celebration event at Madison Square Garden in New York, where he spoke about unity, coexistence, religious diversity and humanity.

During his address, Bhagwat said that a person who identifies as a Hindu but believes there should be no Muslims in Bharat does not truly understand Hinduism. He reiterated the idea that Muslims are an integral part of Indian society and highlighted a broader philosophy of universal brotherhood.

Bhagwat also spoke about the diversity of religions and their different rituals and practices. He said that while religious paths may differ, humanity remains one and people ultimately seek the same divinity.

Referring to the traditional Indian idea of unity, Bhagwat said that religions may be different but humanity is one, adding that truth is one even though people may understand and express it in different ways based on their experiences and beliefs.

The RSS chief’s remarks also drew mixed reactions in New York, with protesters gathering outside Madison Square Garden and describing the event as a political stunt.

During his visit, Jaishankar is expected to co-chair the 27th session of the India-Russia Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation with Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov.
