How India aims to protect key infrastructure amid rise in cyber attacks from across the border

After a pause of four days, Amarnath Yatra has started via both routes, Pahalgam and Sonmarg. A cloud burst had triggered a flash flood that resulted in death of 16 pilgrims. Many are still missing. Amarnath Shrine Board has not shared any data about missing yatris. Indian Air Force has said that 80 per cent of the rescue operation is over.

Officials say that the rescue operation is being carried out at the flash flood site as well as the river flowing from Amarnath cave to Baltal base camp. Although the authorities say that there are very slim chances of finding any survivors.

“I think a major effort has already gone through. They have already cleared the opening of the yatra again. We think in a day or two we will be able to clear the area for anything else," said Air Commodore Pankaj Mittal, air force station, Srinagar.

More than 30 people are feared to be missing and trapped under the debris that came along with the flash floods in the area. So far, the authorities with Amarnath Shrine Board have not released any details about the missing people.

Earlier, camping within 5 kilometres of the Amarnath Cave was prohibitted. But last few years have seen tents and community kitchens being permitted close to the Amarnath Cave.

Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir has called for a probe into this.

“We hope the government will explain what happened and how, and a commission would be set up to investigate. Why were the tents put up at such risky places? It should be investigated? The question is that so far, I don't think the tents were ever placed at the location before this. It is the for the first time. It should be investigated, and It can be a human error," said Farooq Abdullah, former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.

The questions are also raised with regard to the failure of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags for Yatris. The government and Shrine board had claimed that every Yatri taking the pilgrimage would be tracked all through the routes with the help of technology and these RFID cards. But reports are that they have not found a single missing Yatri with the help of these RFID cards. However, the Indian army was seen using sniffer dogs, high tech radars and avalanche trans-receivers to look for the bodies under the rubble.

Authorities have not so far released details about the missing people at the site of the flsh flood. This has caused concern among the people.

Sixth meeting of deputy NSAs underway at Colombo Security Conclave in Kochi

As fast as people connect to the glorious world of the Internet, it's clearly visible how some people are using social media for political use. Social media has become a platform for hate speech. In recent days we have heard a lot about freedom of speech. From comedian Munawar Faruqui to EX –Bharatiya Janata party spokesperson Nupur Sharma, many came into the headlines for hurting religious sentiments and their people supported them by saying "they have freedom of speech".

As we all know that “freedom of speech” comes under article 19(1) of the Indian constitution, and it gives freedom to every Indian citizen to speak and write their opinions. But here's a question: does it allow for hate speech?

To understand this it's important to know what hate speech is.

What is Hate Speech?

According to the Law Commission of India, hate speech has not been defined in Indian law till now.

However, legal provisions in certain legislations prohibit select forms of speech as an exception to freedom of speech. Every word that is not responsible, speech that hurts any sentiments can be considered hate speech, and for that law works on some IPC sections to punish. Here Article 19(2) enters.

Article 19(2) restricts freedom of speech

India is a diverse and democratic country, where many religions, castes, and creeds live. Article 19(2) was introduced so that no one should be hurt, ensuring that no one can misuse their freedom of speech. This article is subjected to certain restrictions, namely, sovereignty and integrity of India, the security of the State, friendly relations with foreign States, public order, decency or morality or in relation to contempt of court, defamation or incitement to an offence. This clearly shows that Freedom of speech doesn't allow the spread of hate speech.

How section 295(A) plays a Role

A person who intentionally and maliciously attempts to offend the religious sentiments of any class of Indian citizens, or insults their religion or religious beliefs, is punished under section 295A of the Indian Penal Code-1860.

This Section shows how hate speech is not acceptable in the Indian constitution.

From July 1, new labour codes can be implemented across the country. It can impact your salary, working hours and weekly offs. The Centre has finalised the four codes related to wages, social security, industrial relations and occupational safety. Now it is up to the states to implement them. According to the code, the concerned company must have to pay the full and final dues within two days of the employee’s last working day after their resignation or termination of employment services. Officials said in December that "the new wage code would be introduced next year, i.e., 2022".

New Wage Code Implementation Date

It is expected to be implemented from July 1, 2022. Once the new codes are introduced, the take home salary would be lesser as the PF contribution would go up. Employees may have to work for 12 hours a day as the Labour Ministry made it clear that the requirement for a 48 hour weekly work is compulsory. There are also talks about working four- day in a week.

New Wage Code 2022: Full and Final Payment in just 2 Days

Currently, the complete settlement of salary and dues are done after 45 days to 60 days from an employee's last working day, and in some cases, it goes up to 90 days. But, according to the new rules, a company must pay the full and final settlement of wages and dues within two days of an employee's last working day following their resignation, dismissal or removal from employment and services.

New Labour Code (2022): Changes in working hours

Under the new labour codes, employees would be allowed to get three week-offs. But, employees would have to work for not more than 48 hours. Employees who work for 8 hours every day will get only one week off. However those who work for 12 hours every day will get three week-offs. Those who work 9 hours per day will get 2 week-offs. Hence, the offs depend on the work hours respectively. The new codes also allow increase in the maximum number of overtime hours from 50 hours to 125 hours.

What will be the impact on salaried employees by new wage code?

1. New wage code to impact your salary. Your in-hand salary will be reduced after implementation of Wage Code

The government's notification on Code on Wages 2019 may reduce the take-home pay while components like PF might rise based on some factors.

2. New wage code to impact your allowance component that is a part of your salary

But, the employees would not be able to get more than 50 percent of their salary in the form of allowance.

3. After implementation of new Wage Code, PF will be higher

This also means that there will be a consequent rise in PF contribution of the employee.

4. New wage code could bring about a longer working hour, though your week off will be more than 2 in that case.

Though it is compulsory to work for 48 hours, the week off may increase depending on working hours.

5. After the implementation of new wage code, there could be big changes in Earned Leave policy

30 holidays in 1 year are now allowed in Government departments, however, defense employees would get 60 holidays in a year.

New Leave Policy introduces in Wage Code

The maternity leaves for female employees will increase to 26 weeks. Also, companies cannot place them on the night shift without their consent. Proper facilities and security should have to be ensured. Also as mentioned above, Earned Leave Policy might be impacted the most. employees in India may be able to enjoy a four-day workweek, as opposed to the current five-day workweek from 2022-23. Weekly-offs would depend on the number of working hours. If this code is implemented, the labour force will be entitled to leaves after every 180 days against 240 days earlier.

Hence the new labour code has many advantages for the employees. Some people consider that certain changes should be made in the laws, while some are eagerly waiting for it to be implemented. The new rules also talk about Work from home which was implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic. The new rules have been drafted to improve the well-being of employees.

Andaman and Nicobar islands recorded 22 earthquakes in 24 hours. The earthquakes were of the magnitude 3.8 to 5.0. The National Center for Seismology said that the earthquakes were reported in the Andaman sea, starting from 5.42 am on Monday with the most recent one being in the south-eastern coast of Port Blair of a magnitude of 4.3, at 8.05 am today, i.e., July 6. There were no reports of any loss of life or damage to property due to the earthquake. But, such a huge number of earthquakes in just a span of 24 hours indicates the destruction that can be caused in the future. Earthquakes in the sea can also result in tsunamis, which can cause even more damage.

What causes an earthquake?

There are tectonic plates present in the earth which are constantly moving. But sometimes they can get stuck at their edges due to friction. According to Usgs.gov, when the stress on the edge overcomes the friction, there is an earthquake that releases energy in waves that travel through the earth's crust and cause the shaking that we feel. A seafloor earthquake is called a submarine earthquake. They generate by far the most dangerous tsunamis, caused by the sudden displacements over large areas.

What is happening in Andaman and Nicobar?

Continuous tremors are felt on the island, due to a series of earthquakes occurring in the Andaman sea. Though the earthquakes didn't cause any harm or casualties, still so many frequently occurring earthquakes are a cause of concern. If the magnitude would have been high, it may even cause Tsunamis. More than 20 earthquakes were reported in the past 24 hours. Hence being an island, the area is in much more threat.

Earthquakes reported in other areas of India

Other than Andaman and Nicobar islands, an earthquake was also reported in Assam at 11.03 am on July 7. Other than that earthquake in Karnataka was also reported a few days back, which was the third one in the week in the state. While just four minutes earlier, Sullia taluk in the Dakshina Kannada district also experienced tremors recording 2.2 on the Richter scale. Manoj Ranjan, the commissioner of Karnataka's disaster management authority, said that "This type of earthquake does not create any harm to the local community, though there might be slight shaking, the chances of occurrence of earthquakes are very less and the possibility of damage is low".

Such frequent earthquakes are not a good sign. Experts have already warned that earthquakes, much higher in magnitude, which can cause a lot of damage may occur in the future. It is high time now that we start protecting and conserving our environment, otherwise many other disasters may occur in the future.

India's consumer protection authority, known as the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) banned hotels and restaurants from levying any service charge on bills. The order came out on Monday. The authority said that the ban is put because of the increased complaints of the customers, who are forced to pay the service charge. CCPA has released a list of new guidelines regarding the same. Paying the charge or a tip is totally the customer's voluntary decision and they cannot be forced to pay the same. The department of consumer affairs (DoCA) also earlier said that it would develop a framework soon to ensure regulation of service charge and make sure that customers do not face any problems regarding the same. It negatively impacts consumers on a regular basis.

What are the new CCPA’s guidelines for restaurants and hotels?

Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued five major guidelines regarding the restaurants and hotels levying a heavy service charge on bills and forcing people to pay it. They are as follows:-

(i) Service charge shall not be added automatically or by default in the bill by any hotels or restaurants.

(ii) The Service charge shall not be collected by any other name from the consumers.

(iii) The hotel or restaurant must inform the customer that to pay the service charge is voluntary, optional, and at the consumer’s discretion and they shall not force a customer to pay the same.

(iv) The hotels or restaurants cannot deny entry or services to a customer based on the collection of service charge.

(v) No service charge should be collected in the name of GST or adding it along the food bill's total amount in any way.

What is Service Charge by Hotels and Restaurants?

Restaurants often add a 5 per cent to 15 per cent tip to a customer's bill under a "service charge" category. It is the amount to pay for the work of the person who comes and serves you. In 2017, the government had said, "As per the approved guidelines on service charge, service charge is totally voluntary and not mandatory now. However still they were adding service charge even in some other name, because of which customers face a lot of problems and even there was a case in Noida recently, in which a person was beaten to death due to some fight over paying the service charge.

Which Indian Law do these guidelines come from?

The CCPA has issued these guidelines under the Section 18 (2) (I) of The Consumer Protection Act, 2019. These guidelines come in addition of the 2017 guidelines by the government, which announced that service charge is completely voluntarily. A meeting was held on June 2, by the Department of Consumer Affairs under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution with restaurant associations and consumer organisations regarding the levying of service charges, after which it was announced that soon a framework would be released to solve the problems the customers are facing.

As a customer why these guidelines on service charge important?

The guidelines are very important for the customers because this can prevent them from being forced and sometimes even harassed to pay the service charges. Customers should be fully aware of these guidelines and should even make other people aware of it, so that they know about their rights. They can even lodge a complaint with the National Consumer Helpline number, which is 1915. Complaint can also be filed with the district collector or with the Consumer Commission.

Response from Hotels and Restaurants side after introducing these guidelines on service charge

During the meeting on June 2, that was held by the by the Department of Consumer Affairs under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution with the restaurant associations and consumer organisations, the hotel and restaurant representatives said that levying service charge is a “matter of individual policy” and that there is “no illegality in levying such a charge”. They also supported the levying of service charge saying that it would help the government as well as tax is also paid on it.

The government has recommended restaurants to pay fair wages to employees instead and increase product prices to meet the cost, instead of forcing customers to pay the service charge. Customers all over the country are very happy with the government's decision and got a sigh of relief. There is a hope that maybe now the customers can dine-in without any problems can enjoy without worrying about the service charge.

Doctors and experts, seeing the rapidly rising cases have started worrying about a 'Fourth wave' and are constantly urging people to take precautions to prevent the infection from spreading.
Why we should take the current COVID-19 situation seriously?

It is very important to take necessary precautions in order to prevent the COVID-19 infections. Not just the citizens, but the governments should also imply the required restrictions and formulate new guidelines. The cases are increasing day-by-day all over the country, and the infection rate is also high. Doctors and experts have warned and feared about a 'Fourth wave' and that if we don't take the necessary precautions now, the situation may worsen and we may land in the same state as we were before.

There are no restrictions as such on travel and people are travelling domestic as well as foreign frequently. This is also one of the reasons of the rise in COVID-19 cases. Other than the states mentioned, other states like Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Punjab, Chhattisgarh, etc. are also reporting increasing cases every day. It is high time now that we start performing COVID-19 appropriate behaviour, otherwise the situation may deteriorate.

General Motors (GM) said on Friday it had called off the sale of a shuttered Indian plant to China's Great Wall Motor after they failed to obtain regulatory approvals, amid a tougher stance by New Delhi towards investments from Beijing.

GM struck a deal in January 2020 to sell the plant to Great Wall, with the Chinese SUV-maker expected to pay up to $300 million as part of a broader plan to invest $1 billion to establish a presence in India's growing car market.

The agreement, which was extended twice, expired on June 30.

"We have been unable to obtain the required approvals within the time frame of the deal," George Svigos, executive director of communications at GM International, told Reuters.

"Our strategy in India remains unchanged and we will now explore further options for the sale of the site," he said, adding the company "hopes to achieve a price that reflects the value of the asset".

"Great Wall Motor will keep its attention to the Indian market in the future and continue looking for new opportunities," the Chinese automaker said in a statement on Friday, while confirming the termination of the plant deal.

GM's deal with Great Wall was agreed just months before India toughened its stance in April 2020 on investment from neighbouring countries including China, making them the first major casualty of the move that has held up billions of dollars of capital inflow in sectors such as automobiles and technology.

"It is hoped that the relevant countries will properly honor their commitment to openness and cooperation and provide a fair, just and non-discriminatory business environment for foreign investors,” China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs told Reuters when asked to comment on the matter.

The move draws a line under a more than two-year effort by GM and Great Wall, forcing the U.S. firm to restart its hunt for a buyer while it continues to spend money on maintaining some machinery and tooling in the factory.

Asked if the plant could be used to make electric vehicles, Svigos said it was suitable for a number of industrial uses, including by non-automotive companies, and GM would explore all options.

Happy Doctor’s Day 2022: Quotes, messages, wishes, greetings, and images to share with friends and family

On June 26, the results of the byelections for three Lok Sabha seats and seven assembly seats in five states, including Delhi, were announced.

Simranjit Singh Mann of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) won the byelection in Sangrur, the constituency of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections, by a margin of more than 5,000 votes.

And in the nation's capital, Durgesh Pathak of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) won the Rajinder Nagar byelection by more than 11,000 votes.

AAP performed very poorly in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections, when it won no parliamentary constituencies, despite its victories in the assembly elections in 2015 and 2020.

Questions are now being raised about whether AAP can claim to be a national party given that it is the only regional party to have offices in two states, as many as Congress. Its influence and ambition are expanding. But will it translate into votes, given that AAP has never been able to gain traction in Lok Sabha elections?

In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, AAP won only one of the more than 40 seats it ran for across nine states and union territories. It fielded candidates in Delhi, Chandigarh, Bihar, Goa, Punjab, Andaman and Nicobar, Haryana, Odisha, and Uttar Pradesh. However, only Bhagwant Mann, a contender from Sangrur in Punjab, had a chance of winning. And on June 26, AAP lost the by-election for that seat as well.

In an open letter to volunteers after the 2019 defeat, Arvind Kejriwal, the maverick leader of AAP and Delhi chief minister, had said, "Ground study following the election has identified two key causes. The atmosphere that pervaded the nation first affected Delhi as well. Second, voters perceived this "big election" to be a contest between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi."

It implies that Kejriwal has never had a compelling platform for the national election. Voters never imagined that Modi and Kejriwal would be competing in this. In 2014, Modi defeated Kejriwal by a large margin of 337,000 votes to win the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat.

Is AAP capable of filling the void left by Congress?

The AAP did very well in the last three Delhi elections and then won Punjab by capitalising on the farmer movement. There is a chance that AAP might succeed the Congress as the main opposition party in India.

Despite its stability, India has struggled to create economic growth and jobs, end hunger, malnutrition, and poverty, as well as to ensure gender parity, good urban governance, and a reduction in social stratification, among other things.

Such failures offer a remarkably wide range of opportunities for reforms that address these pressing issues and so build new voter bases for a party.

However, the current parties, particularly the Congress, did not present a different paradigm.

The AAP fills this void by proposing an alternative system of government that lowers living expenses and raises the disposable incomes of the average person through welfare reforms.

However, in order to penetrate the ruling party's support base, AAP needs a robust organisational structure throughout the nation. Elections for the Lok Sabha will take place in 2024. If they truly want to be a national party and the dominant opposition in national politics, they must begin the preparatory process in full force.

In the initial years, AAP was dismissed as a Delhi-only party, meaning it would not grow in the rest of India. But it has managed to take control of Punjab, one of the biggest states. Now the question is, will AAP remain a north Indian party?

The next elections would be a litmus test to answer that question.

This weakened, the Group of 7 (G7) countries, the world’s wealthiest, will converge in Germany’s Bavarian Alps to discuss pressing matters like the Russian invasion of Ukraine, sanctions on Russian oil, economic and environmental crises.

On Sunday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will host this year's G7 summit of leaders from France, the United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, Canada, and the United States, at a five-star hotel in Elmau.

Apart from that, other countries such as India, Argentina, Indonesia, Senegal and South Africa have also been invited as part of the grouping’s efforts to broaden the engagement.

Though Ukraine will be the top of the agenda, there are also other pressing issues that will be discussed.

Price cap on Russian oil?

According to Politico, US and other West allies have expressed disappointment that their sanctions are being skirted by countries like India and China—who have turned out to be the biggest buyers of Russian crude due to the discounts being offered by Moscow.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has proposed to tackle this issue with a price cap, meaning the West might lift the embargo for those countries that accepted to only buy Russian oil at an agreed maximum price.

US officials claim that Russia and its oil-purchasing partner countries are struggling to find insurance for tankers, and that the price cap can be used as a leverage in exchange for sanctions relief.

‘Climate club’ and post-Covid economic recovery

At the G7 summit, the German government intends to promote international climate cooperation by establishing a climate club. This club is envisioned to foster the implementation of the Paris climate goals, and better coordinate carbon pricing and other schemes for reducing emissions.

A bigger session with the invited countries and international organisations will discuss ways to make a “clean and just transition to climate neutrality”.

The countries will also deliberate on ways to secure energy supplies and control the global soaring fuel prices. They will also brainstorm on the COVID-19 pandemic, strengthening preparedness and response, and improving the global health architecture.

They will also discuss the darkening global economic outlook, the official said - the challenge being controlling government spending without sending the economy into shock.

‘Climate club’ and post-Covid economic recovery At the G7 summit, the German government intends to promote international climate cooperation by establishing a climate club.
India's northeastern state of Assam is suffering from heavy flooding. All major rivers are in spate, affecting over 5 million people and claiming 11 more lives. Bank erosion caused by the river Brahmaputra is one of the major reasons why Assam gets flooded every year. Due to erosion, the width of the river increases and it changes its course. Meanwhile, a video is becoming viral of a newborn baby being moved safely in a basket, which people said reminded them of Lord Krishna. The government and national disaster agencies are constantly giving Asaam floods updates and requesting people to stay indoors. Barpeta is the worst-hit district with over 1.2 million people being affected due to floods in the area. This was followed by Darrang with over 400,000 people hit by the deluge and Nagaon with over 440,000 people affected. Authorities are running 1,425 relief camps and distribution centres in over 25 districts. Also, 3.4 million animals remain affected in inundated areas, while 5,232 have been washed away by floods.

Besides, seven more people went missing across five districts, the Assam Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said in its report. Rescue operations are underway. Over 1 lakh people are displaced. Three new fatalities were recorded in Darrang, two in Nagaon -- police personnel who got washed away while trying to rescue marooned people, and one each in Cachar, Dibrugarh, Hailakandi, Hojai, Kamrup and Lakhimpur. Seven people were reported missing, with two each in Udalguri and Kamrup and one each in Cachar, Darrang and Lakhimpur.

Army led rescue operations are also going on in Assam. An army team helped evacuate a cancer patient in her 40s, stuck at her flooded home in Kamrup district’s Palepara vilage for three days, and sent her to an advanced healthcare centre in Guwahati. Three people in their 90s were also evacuated to safety from Kadamtola and Holapara village in Baksa district. They have rescued over a 100 people.
Over 10,000 people have been rendered homeless in Tripura due to the flooding caused by incessant rainfall since Friday. Union Home Minister Amit Shah also called up Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to enquire about the state of affairs, officials said. However, the situation has deteriorated further on Monday with the death toll rising. In all, 810 relief camps and 615 relief distribution centres have been opened in all the affected areas. According to a report by ASDMA, a total of 2,31,819 people are staying in the relief camps while over 1,13,485 hectares of crops have been damaged. The water in five rivers -- Brahmaputra, Kopili, Beki, Pagladiya, Puthimari -- is flowing above the danger level at several places.

Meanwhile, a video is becoming viral of a newborn baby being moved safely in a basket, which people said reminded them of Lord Krishna. The government and national disaster agencies are constantly giving Asaam floods updates and requesting people to stay indoors.
Will Rakesh Jhunjhunwala’s Akasa Air bring revolution in Indian Aviation Industry?

Due to the Covid pandemic, the aviation sector is facing a huge downfall, leaving many people in the industry unemployed. However, the launch of Akasa air especially due to its ultra low cost, may result in a boom for the industry. Many people wish to travel by air but can't because of the high ticket cost, but if the price lowers, the sale of tickets will increase and help the aviation sector to grow. It will also help provide employment to more people. If the tickets become low cost, people would want to travel more frequently. All this can bring a revolution in the aviation sector.

Will Akasa Air work on the Wizz Air and Ryan Air Model in India?

Ryan Air and Wizz Air are both Europe-based airlines that also provide people with low cost travels. Due to this, they are proving to be a boom for the aviation sector there, and are getting a lot of customers. However there is a neck-to-neck competition between both of them, on which one is better. Akasa air also works on a similar model. However in India, Akasa would be the first ultra low cost airline, and everyone wants to see what it serves.

What strategy will be taken by existing airlines in India after Akasa Air launch?

With the launch of the ultra low-cost airline, Akasa air, the existing airlines like Indigo, Vistara, Spice Jet, etc. are expected to face further pressure. However, in response to the launch of low cost airline, they can also start to lower their ticket prices and improve their services. The tough competition would also force the other airlines to perform better than they were doing before, which may also aid in the growth of the aviation sector after the pandemic damages. Speaking at the post-earnings conference call on July 27, IndiGo’s CFO Jiten Chopra said: “The strength of our balance sheet is our biggest defence in the fight against Covid19 and we will continue to enhance this strength by focusing on cost reduction, liquidity enhancement and capacity addition”. CAPA said that it expects Indian airlines to lose a consolidated $4.1 billion in FY2022, similar to that in FY2021.

Everyone is excited to travel in the ultra low cost airline, and to see will it prove to be a boom for the aviation sector. Akasa Air: Why is everyone waiting for Rakesh Jhunjhunwala’s airlines?

Tata-owned Air India is considering ordering nearly 300 narrowbody jets, which may potentially become one of the most significant orders in the history of commercial aviation, as the airline plans to expand its fleet under new ownership, reported Bloomberg.

Bloomberg quoted an anonymous source who claimed that Air India might order Airbus SE's A320neo family jets, Boeing Co.'s 737 Max models, or a mix of both. Even though discounts are typical during such large purchases, a deal for 300 737 Max-10 jets could be approximately worth $40.5 billion.

Since Airbus commonly dominates the skies in India, Boeing winning a narrowbody order will be a massive triumph for the manufacturer. In the world's fastest-growing aviation market before the pandemic, airlines such as IndiGo, operated by InterGlobe Aviation Ltd is the world's largest customers for Airbus best-selling narrowbodies, ordering more than 700, along with others including Vistara, Go Airlines India Ltd. and AirAsia India Ltd. who fly planes from the same European manufacturer.

Three hundred planes will take several years or even decades to produce and deliver. Airbus builds close to 50 aircraft in a month and plans to increase production to 65 per month by 2023 and then to 75 in a month by 2025.

Also, a plea is filed in Supreme Court against India's military hiring scheme which terms it 'illegal'. With trains in Bihar being set on fire, to violence in Telangana, Punjab, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and many other states, the situation remains tense.
What is the Agneepath Scheme and What are the key changes made by Centre?

Agneepath Scheme is a recruitment process announced by the Indian government in which youths between the ages of 17-and-a-half and 21 years would get an opportunity to work with the Indian armed forces. It will be a four-year commitment at the end of which 25 per cent of the recruits will be retained for regular service. The recruits will be called 'Agniveers'.

In other news, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said his government will provide “guaranteed” employment to ‘Agniveers’ after their four year stint in the armed forces. Khattar said, “I announce that anyone (the Agniveers) who wants to join Haryana government services, they will be given a guaranteed job, no one will go without a job. We take guarantee for this.” The chief minister said the ‘Agniveers’ will be absorbed in the state’s Group C services and in the police force. BJP leader Harduik Patel and Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Culture Arjun Meghwal also came out in support of the scheme on Monday, saying they will help 10 Agniveers at a personal level.

The Agniveers will get a monthly salary of Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000, with 75 per cent of them who get demobilised after four years getting a "Seva Nidhi" exit package of Rs 1.17 million. However, the government has made some changes in the scheme, in light of the ongoing protests and confusion among the youth. The upper age limit has now been increased to 23 only for this year due to problems caused in hiring because of the pandemic. Also, proposal to reserve 10 per cent of the job vacancies in the Ministry of Defence has been approved. Also, Union minister Amit Shah has announced that his ministry has decided to give priority to "Agniveers" who will have completed their four years.

Why is the youth protesting against the scheme?

One of the main reasons for protests is the flow of misinformation throughout social media. Internet services are also suspended in states like Haryana and Bihar. However, the government as well as the armed forces are trying to clear out information regarding the scheme. The primary concern among the youth is that the scheme would make the rest 75 per cent of the recruits that would be demobilized, ineligible for pensions, and with an uncertain future, as they would be limited to work for four years. It is also being criticised for failing to provide permanent jobs or healthcare benefits after they retire.

Agneepath Scheme Protest: Why are youth protesting against the Agneepath scheme? All you need to know

India's annual monsoon rainfall has finally arrived. It covered more than half of the country and conditions are for it to advance into central, northern and western regions this week, the weather department said on Monday. Monsoon will help people to get a relief from the scorching heat especially in Delhi NCR, as well as it will benefit farmers. Monsoon will accelerate the production of crops. Sowing of cotton, soybean, corn and paddy has lagged in key producing states, but could accelerate now, according to experts. The monsoon has covered all of southern and eastern India and most of the central state of Madhya Pradesh, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in a statement. "Monsoon has revived. This week many regions in southern and central India would get heavy rainfall", an IMD official said. According to a Reuters report, the monsoon which accounts for nearly 70 per cent of India's annual rainfall and is the lifeblood of its 2.7 trillion dollars agriculture-dependent economy arrived on the coast of southern Kerala state on May 29, two days ahead of usual. Its progress later stalled for over a week.

The India Meteorological Department confirmed the arrival of the Southwest Monsoon in Karnataka on Tuesday while the government said it has already prepared a checklist to deal with emergencies. Karnataka is likely to witness “normal to above normal” rainfall, which is about 82 per cent. Although it set in on time, the southwest monsoon has slowed significantly over the past week in Karnataka, affecting sowing activities especially in North Karnataka districts. In the week ending June 14, the state recorded a 66 per cent shortage in rainfall it received just 14mm of rain as against a normal of 42mm.

Monsoon is very important for India, mainly because of its large agricultural dependence. However, Monsoon has started to slow down in some states, including Karnataka, which may lead to slowing down of the production of crops. Not only for agriculture, but Monsoon also helps people to get relief from the heat. Some areas are also experiencing floods due to heavy rains like Assam and even in Bangladesh. People hope that the weather remains pleasant and they can enjoy going out.
