With national elections&nbsp;due in India in the next couple of months,&nbsp;Prime Minister Narendra Modi appeared in poll mode as he took on the opposition (Indian National Congress) calling its rule 'corrupt' and said that India was now "moving forward with confidence"

"Congress is corrupt; it can't think of a future; India failed to thrive under Congress," said the prime minister&nbsp; addressing the 'Viksit Bharat, Viksit Rajasthan' (Developed India, Developed Rajasthan) programme through video conferencing.

"After independence, today this golden period has come. India has this opportunity to leave behind all the disappointments from 10 years ago. India is moving forward now with confidence," he added.

Speaking further, the Prime Minister recalled how&nbsp;people&nbsp;talked about&nbsp;"scams and bombings" before the&nbsp;NDA (Natgional Democratic Alliance) government under his leadership came to power in 2014.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"People in India used to wonder what would happen to them and to the country. During the Congress regime, this was the atmosphere..." said the PM.

He accused the Congress of working with a single-point agenda of 'anti-Modi' rather than contributing to the nation's development.

"They spread such things against Modi, which divide the society. When a party gets trapped in the vicious circle of nepotism and dynasty politics, the same thing happens to it. Today everyone is leaving Congress, only one family is seen there," said the PM.

Rajasthan, which till 2023 elections was ruled by the&nbsp;Congress, voted in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

PM Modi expressed gratitude to voters in Rajasthan for this and thanked people of the state for giving a grand welcome to French President Emmanuel Macron, who visited India recently.

While talking about what the new state government under BJP, did after coming to power, he said, "During the regime of the previous government in Rajasthan, there used to be frequent paper leaks, and youth used to get affected by this. To investigate this, an Special Investigation Team was formed as soon as the BJP came to power. The Central Government has formed a stringent law against those who indulge in paper leaks..."

"Several people from every Assembly of Rajasthan have joined this important program, I congratulate all of you... A few days ago, the grand welcome you gave to the President of France in Jaipur echoed throughout India and France...," the PM added.

As part of its ambition to displace China as the global supply chain hub, India is setting up a warehouse facility, named 'Bharat Mart', in the United Arab Emirates.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UAE Vice President Mohamed bin Rashid al Maktoum laid the foundation stone for the facility on Wednesday.

'Bharat Mart' is expected to be a platform for exporters to showcase their products under one roof, according to media reports. Once the concept is finalised, the facility is expected to be operational by 2025.

Moreover, 'Bharat Mart' is all set to rival China's warehousing facility called 'Dragon Mart'.

The facility, covering an area of over 100,000 square meters, will be set up in Dubai's Jebel Ali free zone, which is managed by DP World.&nbsp;

'Bharat Mart' will have retail showrooms, warehouses, offices, and other facilities. It will accommodate various categories of goods, ranging from heavy machinery to perishable items.

Reports also suggest there are also plans to establish a digital platform for buyers across the globe.

'Bharat Mart' is likely to further strengthen bilateral trade by leveraging Jebel Ali Port’s strategic location and strength in logistics.

India-UAE trade has been on the rise since the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement came into effect in 2022. &nbsp;

In 2022-23, the first year of the agreement, bilateral trade reached a historic high of around $84.5 billion.&nbsp;

Both countries are aiming to double their non-petroleum trade target to $100 billion by 2030.

The facility is also expected to play a key role in promoting the exports of India’s micro, small and medium sectors. It will provide them with a platform to reach international buyers in West Asia, Africa and Eurasia.

The legislative assembly in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday (Feb 14) passed two resolutions, one against the proposed delimitation exercise, the other against the proposed 'One Nation&nbsp;One Election' system. The resolutions found overwhelming support with even Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) having to voice support.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin termed the delimitation exercise a 'punishment' for states with smaller population

"The delimitation exercise is a 'punishment' for states that have a smaller population. The number of constituencies in both the houses of Parliament and in the Assemblies are cut down for such states that reduce population," he said.

"We can't accept delimitation based on the census...Due to unavoidable reasons, if the number of seats based on population were to increase, it would be maintained at the present ratio of the constituencies between the states in the state assemblies and both houses of parliament fixed based on the population of 1971," he said.

BJP supported the sentiment.

"Fear is understandable and reasonable in future if our voice and rights become less if the number of seats are reduced. Tamil Nadu BJP understands the concern of that Resolution," said BJP MLA Vanathi Srinivasa.

<h2>What is the proposed delimitation exercise: Key points</h2>

Delimitation refers to rearranging number of seats and boundaries of constituencies in the state for parliament and state assemblies.

The delimitation was expected to be carried out after each census but the process was frozen in 1971 in order to encourage states to implement population control measures.

It has been seen in last few decades that population growth rate in north Indian states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar etc. has been more compared to that in southern Indian states.

Historical moments often arrive without warning and they bring about dramatic changes to our&nbsp;political landscape. I believe we are living in those times. It has been one year since I visited&nbsp;India for the first time as Foreign Minister. I am glad to be back to discuss and seek ways to&nbsp;respond to the challenges we face with our Indian friends, my counterpart S. Jaishankar and&nbsp;other key representatives in Delhi. I cherish also the opportunity to be able to participate in the&nbsp;prestigious Raisina Dialogue forum.

Coming to India means meeting old friends&nbsp;we share a rich past and want to build a common&nbsp;future with. Czech-Indian relations date back long before 1947, when diplomatic relations were&nbsp;officially established.

The first decades of the 20th century laid foundations of the world-renowned Czech Indology.&nbsp;Soon after the establishment of an independent Czechoslovakia in 1918, we opened our consulates in Mumbai and Kolkata. They contributed to the robust intensity of our relations, which gradually expanded after India's independence.&nbsp;

Business and trade cooperation has been the main pillar of our relations for decades and&nbsp;continues to be so. Many people in India know the traditional Czech brands such as Škoda, Tatra&nbsp;and Bata. A number of people-to-people, cultural, personal and traditional economic ties bind&nbsp;us together, and I try to recall them at every meeting with my Indian partners.&nbsp;

We have the base to build on. Our rich past is, however, not what defines the current Czech-Indian relations or where I see their potential. Czech Government commits our foreign policy&nbsp;to strengthening ties with democratic partners, while it explicitly mentions India. Within the&nbsp;EU, my country is among five member states with their national strategies on the Indo-Pacific&nbsp;region. It was then only natural to designate the Indo-Pacific as one of our geographical&nbsp;priorities when we held the Presidency of the European Union two years ago.

As our two countries face a rapidly evolving global landscape, the need for a stronger, ever more strategic approach to our partnership has become critical to advancing our bilateral&nbsp;cooperation and seeking ways to address the shared security challenges.

We are sharp-eyed to violations of international law. Czechia stands in solidarity with Ukraine that is heroically defending its territory against Russian aggression. The security in Europe and&nbsp;Asia are interlinked.&nbsp;

In the Indo-Pacific region, too, there are actors that conduct themselves unilaterally and erode&nbsp;our rules-based international order violating the UN Charter in its letter and in the spirit. I refer&nbsp;to the DPRK’s missile launches. We are also concerned over actions that increase tensions&nbsp;across the Taiwan Strait. We wish to cooperate with our Indo-Pacific partners in addressing&nbsp;these security challenges together.

India as an ever more important power on global scene has a right for its voice to be heard and&nbsp;taken into account. With this right comes also the responsibility for the world stability.&nbsp;

India and Czechia must make every effort to transform the crises we face into opportunities. It&nbsp;is vital to deepen our partnerships, decrease undesirable dependencies and open the gates for&nbsp;diversified and secure supply chains. There is a lot of discussion about weakening globalisation,&nbsp;but we should rather talk about its changing patterns and recognise that there are new regional&nbsp;players emerging, including the so-called minilaterals, e.g. QUAD.

Czechia and India in the words of their respective Prime Ministers are now in a strategic&nbsp;partnership on innovation. What does that entail? We are actually opening a new and exciting&nbsp;chapter in our relations now. We shall engage in novel bilateral projects in a number of&nbsp;economic and scientific fields; the people-to-people cooperation must flourish. We shall and&nbsp;we will look for new ways and new ideas to make our cooperation truly nimble and innovative.&nbsp;

There is a great potential for us to focus on high value-added sectors, products and advanced&nbsp;services. Both countries will support joint initiatives aimed at know-how and technology&nbsp;exchange. Joint research projects and applied research must be at the forefront.

Czech companies, experts, and universities can bring unique and reliable solutions to India,&nbsp;helping to address shared challenges and drive mutual prosperity. For instance, Czech expertise&nbsp;in aerospace and space technologies can contribute to India's ambitions in space industry and&nbsp;satellite-based applications.

Let us build on our success stories like Czech radars that cover more than 90% of India’s civil&nbsp;airspace. In line with the “Make in India” strategy, we are looking for new opportunities, for&nbsp;example in transportation or defence industrial cooperation.

I believe that deepening our cooperation can create new opportunities for shared growth and&nbsp;prosperity for both Czechia and India. Together, we can use our strengths and expertise.

Czechia-India strategic partnership: From a rich past to fostering innovation

In a bid to address severe airspace congestion at Mumbai Airport, the central government has imposed flight restrictions, caused by various factors, including non-scheduled flight operations during peak hours.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation revealed that, despite the escalating air traffic post-pandemic, the airport had failed to take sufficient measures.

The ministry said that the airport operator did not take steps to streamline and regulate the air traffic movements to resolve this problem, therefore forcing it to step in.

"The airport operator, being the slot provider as well as the manager of slots for the airlines, should have proactively taken steps to streamline and regulate the air traffic movements, to resolve this problem. However, since no such action was initiated by them, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has had to step in," it said.

The airport is operated by Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL).

The ministry said that the airport "suffers from congestion and excess capacity on its runways, which inadvertently leads to air space congestion, where flights are forced to hover over the city for a long duration of around 40-60 minutes."

The ministry further said that considering that an aircraft on average consumes 2000kg of fuel per hour, such a long duration of circling time causes significant wastage of fuel for the aircrafts ranging from 1.7 kilolitres of jet fuel (approximately costing around Rs 1.8 lakh) for a 40-minute circling time in air to around 2.5 kilolitres of jet fuel (approximately costing around Rs. 2.6 lakhs) for a 60-minute circling time.

"It is to be understood that such an increase in fuel costs would eventually be borne by the consumers. This also has a cascading effect on the efficiency of airports operations leading to a longer wait time, inordinate delays, affecting both passengers and airlines adversely," it said.

In order to remedy such air space congestion, an analysis was conducted by Airport Authority of India (AAI), which found that air traffic permitted per hour during the 6 hours of High Intensity Runway Operations (HIRO i.e. from 8 am to 11 am and 5 pm to 8 pm) was almost equivalent to air traffic permitted per hour during the remaining 18 hours of the day.

In addition to the above slots, general aviation and military aircraft operations were also allowed without any restrictions.

"Besides, owing to presence of transverse runways, operation of non-scheduled flights further increases air traffic congestion during peak hours," it said.

The restrictions reduce air traffic movements from 46 to 44 per hour during HIRO periods and from 44 to 42 per hour during non-HIRO periods. General aviation aircraft operations are also limited during HIRO periods. The government expects Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) to promptly ensure the cooperation of all airlines with these prescribed restrictions.

The causes of congestion were identified as excessive slot distribution with limited time margins, non-adherence of slots by airlines, and non-scheduled operations during peak hours. While the airport is operating at full capacity, the government emphasised that the airport operator should have proactively taken steps to regulate air traffic movements.

"While Mumbai Airport is running at its full capacity, it was found that the persistent congestion was caused due to, excessive slot distribution with limited time margins on behalf of the airport operator, non-adherence of the slots on behalf of the airlines and non-scheduled operations during peak hours," it said.

Tower Semiconductor, a leading Israeli chipmaker, has reportedly submitted a proposal to the Indian government for the establishment of an $8 billion chip manufacturing plant in the country. <o:p></o:p>

According to a report by Indian Express published on Sunday, the proposed facility aims to produce cutting-edge 65 nanometre and 40 nanometre chips, catering to diverse sectors such as automotive and wearable electronics.<o:p></o:p>

This move follows a meeting held in October 2023 between India’s Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, and Tower Semiconductor’s CEO, Russel C Ellwanger. <o:p></o:p>

Discussions during the meeting revolved around potential collaborations between Tower Semiconductor and India in the chip manufacturing domain, indicating the company's keen interest in bolstering its presence in the Indian market.<o:p></o:p>

If approved, Tower Semiconductor's proposal could mark a significant stride towards realising India's ambitions of becoming a global hub for chip manufacturing. <o:p></o:p>

The Indian government’s $10 billion chip manufacturing scheme, which offers a 50 per cent capital expenditure subsidy to successful applicants, aims to incentivise and accelerate investments in this crucial sector.<o:p></o:p>

Previously, Tower Semiconductor had expressed interest in setting up a $3 billion chip plant in Karnataka in partnership with the international consortium ISMC. <o:p></o:p>

However, this plan was put on hold due to the impending merger between Tower Semiconductor and Intel. <o:p></o:p>

Now, with renewed focus, the company seeks to solidify its footprint in India's burgeoning tech landscape.<o:p></o:p>

In parallel with Tower Semiconductor's proposal, CG Power and Industrial Solutions announced a strategic partnership with a unit of Japanese chipmaker Renesas Electronics and Thailand's Stars Microelectronics. <o:p></o:p>

The collaboration aims to establish a semiconductor facility in India at an investment of $222 million.<o:p></o:p>

The proposed venture will focus on setting up an outsourced semiconductor assembly and testing (OSAT) facility, a crucial component in the chip manufacturing process.<o:p></o:p>

In the joint venture, CG Power will hold the majority stake of 92.34 per cent.<o:p></o:p>

Renesas Electronics America and Stars Microelectronics will hold stakes of 6.76 per cent and 0.9 per cent, respectively.<o:p></o:p>

While India currently lacks indigenous chip manufacturing capabilities, initiatives like those proposed by Tower Semiconductor and CG Power signal a promising future for the country's tech industry. <o:p></o:p>

With global players eyeing India as a lucrative destination for chip production, the nation is poised to emerge as a key player in the global semiconductor market. <o:p></o:p>

Notably, other contenders like Foxconn and Vedanta are also vying to establish chip manufacturing facilities in India, highlighting the growing competition and potential for growth in this sector.<o:p></o:p>

This comes two weeks after Kumar ditched JDU's alliance with Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and formed a new government with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

The JD(U) chief, on Jan 28, took oath as chief minister of the east Indian state of Bihar for the record ninth time, cutting ties with the combined opposition's INDIA alliance.

JD(U) national secretary Rajiv Ranjan Prasad said, "Under the leadership of CM Nitish Kumar, we will get the majority and the government will complete its tenure."

Security was heightened outside the residence of Tejashwi Yadav, the Leader of the Opposition in the Bihar Assembly, on Sunday (Feb 11).

The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) claimed that the police personnel "wanted to enter (Tejashwi's) residence on any pretext and orchestrate untoward incidents against party MLAs".

"Nitish Kumar has sent thousands of police and surrounded Tejashwi ji's residence from all sides. They want to enter the residence on any pretext and do untoward incidents with the MLAs," read a post on the official X handle of RJD.

"The people of Bihar are watching the misdeeds of Nitish Kumar and the police. Remember, we are not among those who fear and bow down. This is a struggle of ideology and we will fight it and win because the justice-loving people of Bihar will oppose this police repression. Jai Bihar! Jai Hind," the party added.

Reacting to RJD's claims, BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain said the police were merely doing their job.

"If you (Tejashwi Yadav) kidnap the MLAs and any MLA's relative file a complaint, the police will surely come. If you (Tejashwi Yadav) keep any MLA tied up in your house, the police will surely take action. They (police) are only doing their job," Hussain said.

He further added that no MLA from his party or JD(U) was missing, stating that the Opposition was only spreading rumours.

"RJD and Congress are only spreading confusion. The JD(U) and the BJP will together prove majority on the Assembly floor. No one (MLAs) is out of reach and everyone is in touch with us. They are spreading canards. All NDA MLAs are together. They should stop worrying about our MLAs and focus on their missing legislators," the BJP leader added.

(With inputs from agencies)

Russian envoy to India, Denis Alipov on Saturday (Feb 10) stated that the United States was making attempts to threaten Moscow's relationship with New Delhi via sanctions even though his country continues to be India's "reliable and time-tested friend".

"In India, Russia enjoys a solid reputation as a reliable, sincere, well-intentioned, time-tested friend. Such an image was initially shaped due to the major contribution of the USSR to Indian socio-economic development, and it largely persists to this day," Alipov said during an interview with news agency RT.

"US officials who come here do not hesitate to directly state that they are pursuing the goal of tearing New Delhi away from Moscow. They are even making threats with secondary sanctions. Some Indian partners are forced to exercise caution, sometimes, frankly speaking, excessively, but there are also a significant number of those for whom such an approach is unacceptable." he added.

<h2>'Have never conditioned cooperation on politics, not interfered in domestic affairs'</h2>

The Russian envoy, stressing upon the strong bilateral relationship, stated that the New Delhi-Moscow ties, unlike the Western allies, have never "conditioned cooperation on politics" nor did the two sides ever meddle in each other's domestic affairs.

"Our ties continue to steadily expand in a wide range of areas according to our converging national interests. But unlike our Western partners, we have never conditioned cooperation on politics, have not interfered in domestic affairs, and have always maintained mutually respectful and trusted relationships. Therefore, even now we mainly see a growing desire to keep working together and finding ways to overcome well-known impediments caused by destructive unilateral approaches," said&nbsp;Alipov.

"It should be noted that over the recent years, the number of such contacts has increased manifold, and they are becoming more and more meaningful, including distributing information detailing the economic and investment potential and promising areas for interaction. It is indicative that the current bilateral trade turnover, which at the end of 2023 may exceed $60 billion, is several times higher than the pre-sanctions figures," he added.

Alipov also urged for immediate reforms of the United Nations and its agencies whilst making a strong case for India's inclusion as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

"We are of the view that India as a permanent member of the Security Council could make a significant contribution to promoting balance as well as an agenda focused on the interests of the world majority, primarily the countries of the Global South," the Russian envoy said.

Russia and India have had a strong strategic alliance based on similar interests and historical ties for decades now.

As per the Russian news agency, large-scale defense cooperation lies at the heart of the alliance with both countries participating in cooperative military exercises, co-development of cutting-edge military platforms, and technology transfers.&nbsp;

India's Home Minister Amit Shah while addressing the 17th Lok Sabha on Saturday (Feb 10) spoke about the border issue at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Ladakh claiming that Beijing made attempt&nbsp;to replicate the 1962 war with New Delhi.

Shah restated the Union Government's stance on the matter in Parliament, asserting that India had "not lost out on any territory" in the military confrontation with the Chinese soldiers. &nbsp;

“China tried to do what it did in 1962," news agency PTI quoted Amit Shah as saying in Lok Sabha. “Our leadership displayed resolve and not an inch of India's land was lost," he added.

Since the inception of the border crisis, India has maintained that no encroachment of land has taken place by the Chinese troops. However, opposition parties, along with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi have launched scathing attacks against the Modi government over “letting China acquire Indian territory.”

The standoff which began in late April-May 2020 resulted in a violent skirmish in the Galwan Valley on June 15, 2020, which further claimed the lives on both sides of the border.

This was the first time in over 40 years that people were killed in a border which resulted in fatalities.

The action killed at least twenty Indian soldiers.

The average time to clear projects increased to 316 days from 86 days between 2011 and 2014.

"We corrected all misgovernance, and focussed on reforms," Sitharaman said, adding the average environment clearance time for projects has come down to 70 days.

‘Sonia Gandhi acted like super PM’: Nirmala Sitharaman launches scathing attack on opposition

India's Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday (Feb 9) said that the White Paper which was tabled by the government in Parliament was a "serious document" and showed the dedicated efforts by the Modi government to bring the economy "back on rails" after almost a decade of "economic mismanagement" of the UPA government.

Responding to the debate on the White Paper in Lok Sabha, Sitharaman spoke of the measures taken by the Modi government to bolster self-reliance in defence and also expedite environmental licenses for more rapid economic development.&nbsp;

"I challenge anyone who says this document is baseless. Everything is with evidence. I challenge anyone who says that we have kept the White Paper which has no proof," Sitharaman said amid interruptions by opposition members.

"The White Paper is a serious document for documentary evidence for everything that is said in it and prepared with an intention of informing the House of the 10 years' dedicated effort to get the government work in such a way that the economy is back on rails and also progress in such a way that our aspirations can be met," she added.

Another blow to INDIA bloc? RLD chief Jayant Chaudhary hints at alliance with NDA

India is on the brink of finalising a trade agreement that could potentially unleash a wave of investment worth $100 billion over 15 years from a select group of European nations. <o:p></o:p>

A Bloomberg report cited sources familiar with the negotiations who revealed that the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), comprising Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein, have decided to invest in India as part of a trade pact currently in the advanced stages of discussion.<o:p></o:p>

Although the specific terms are yet to be disclosed, the foundational framework of the deal has been established, with deliberations now focusing on the precise investment amount.<o:p></o:p>

While India aims for a legally binding commitment, European officials suggest the figure may be presented as a target without legal obligation. <o:p></o:p>

If finalised, this agreement would mark a historic milestone as India secures an unprecedented investment commitment within a free trade agreement.<o:p></o:p>

Switzerland's Economy Minister Guy Parmelin hinted at the progress made, indicating that the deal's outline has been agreed upon. <o:p></o:p>

However, official details are pending legal clarifications, with efforts underway to expedite the signing process before India's anticipated elections slated for April. <o:p></o:p>

Despite attempts to reach out to India's commerce ministry, there has been no immediate response regarding the matter. <o:p></o:p>

Acknowledging the ongoing negotiations, the Swiss economy ministry emphasised that the agreement's text is yet to be finalised, withholding specific details at this juncture.<o:p></o:p>

Nevertheless, significant consensus has been reached on key areas such as patent protection and innovative investment promotion measures.<o:p></o:p>

Norway's government opted not to comment on the deal's specifics, maintaining discretion amidst the ongoing discussions. <o:p></o:p>

As Switzerland emerges as India's foremost trading partner within the EFTA bloc, with bilateral trade reaching $17.14 billion in the 2022-23 fiscal year, this prospective agreement holds immense significance for both parties.<o:p></o:p>

For the EFTA nations, the agreement, after 16 years in the making, promises expanded opportunities to export processed foods, electrical machinery, and engineering products to India, potentially reaching a market of 1.4 billion people. <o:p></o:p>

Furthermore, the EFTA bloc's pharmaceutical and medical devices sectors are poised to benefit significantly from this deal.<o:p></o:p>

The United Arab Emirates is also contemplating a substantial investment of up to $50 billion in India, further underlining the country's attractiveness to foreign investors. <o:p></o:p>

The proposed investment from EFTA countries is expected to primarily stem from private enterprises and state-backed entities, targeting existing and upcoming manufacturing ventures. <o:p></o:p>

Sources familiar with the discussions anticipate over 1 million job opportunities to be generated in India as a result of this investment influx.<o:p></o:p>

In addition to facilitating investment, the agreement aims to streamline the movement of Indian professionals to the EFTA bloc and enhance market access for select agricultural products. <o:p></o:p>

Despite Switzerland's traditional stance of protecting its agricultural sector, negotiations suggest a willingness to consider easier market access for Indian rice due to Switzerland's nominal domestic production.<o:p></o:p>

India nears landmark $100 bn investment pact with Switzerland, Norway

The Narendra Modi government released a white paper, claiming their strategic policies, commitment to reforms, and strong leadership led to India's economic transformation over the past decade on Friday.

Shifting gears

The document contrasts the current regime with the previous United Progressive Alliance (UPA) era, blaming "policy paralysis, fiscal irresponsibility, and corruption" for India's earlier struggles.

It credits the BJP-led government with propelling the nation from the "Fragile Five" to the world's fifth-largest economy through sound economic management.

UPA's legacy

The white paper criticises the UPA government for jeopardising macroeconomic stability, citing high inflation and irresponsible fiscal deficits.

The 2014 banking crisis, attributed to undisclosed bad loans, is labelled as a significant UPA legacy.

A Credit Suisse report highlighting "significant undisclosed liabilities" is used to emphasise the crisis's severity.

Modi's reform agenda

The document claims the Modi government tackled the banking crisis head-on, increased capital spending, and achieved fiscal consolidation upon taking office.

These measures, it argues, not only improved India's international standing but also paved the way for sustained high growth.

Investing in the future

The government claims to have addressed challenges inherited from the UPA era while investing in both the foundation and superstructure of the economy.

The white paper underlines that fiscal consolidation and improved government spending quality were achieved without compromising on welfare programs, citing statistics and observations from multilateral institutions as support.

Discipline amid crisis

Acknowledging that some improvements were influenced by external factors, the document criticises the UPA's "reckless lending" and ensuing bad loans crisis.

It commends the Modi government's ability to maintain fiscal discipline even during the pandemic and achieve faster-than-expected fiscal consolidation, attributing this to their "political capital."

Centralised approach

The white paper subtly attributes the success to a centralised approach under the current government, highlighting improved implementation of welfare and infrastructure programs.

It cites a shift from sporadic coverage to "saturation coverage," ensuring basic necessities reach beneficiaries through targeted support.

The share of capital expenditure in total spending has also increased, with efficiency in utilisation boosted by a "Whole of Government" approach leveraging Gati Shakti and Pragati initiatives.

Decoding the Modi government's white paper on Indian economy

Republican politician and US presidential contender Nikki Haley has said India perceives Washington as 'weak', which is one of the reasons why New Delhi&nbsp;has allied&nbsp;with Russia.&nbsp;

Speaking to&nbsp;Fox Business News, the Indian-American presidential aspirant lauded India&nbsp;for 'playing smart' in the current global situation and choosing its allies.&nbsp;

"I have got to say, I have dealt with India too. I have talked with (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi. India wants to be a partner with us. They don't want to be a partner with Russia," said Haley.

"The problem is, India doesn't trust us to win. They don't trust us to lead. They see right now that we're weak," she added.

The former South Carolina governor asserted that it was the military cooperation between the two nations that made it easier for New Delhi to pivot towards Moscow.&nbsp;

"India has always played it smart. They have played it smart, and they have stayed close with Russia because that's where they get a lot of their military equipment," she said in response to a question.

Haley, however, added that all of America's friends would return once it starts leading again. She said the US needed to start building&nbsp;alliances as the 'friends' were going out on their own to fend off the Chinese challenge.&nbsp;

"When we start to lead again, when we start to get the weakness out and stop putting our head in the sand, that's when our friends, India, Australia, New Zealand, all of them will -- and Israel, Japan, South Korea -- all of them want to do that. Japan gave themselves a billion-dollar stimulus to become less dependent on China," Haley said.

The Assam government has proposed to merge the state boards for Classes 10 and 12 into one single entity to manage secondary education on Wednesday.

The state government introduced the Assam State School Education Board Bill, 2024 in the Assembly to create a new body to control the education system till Class 12 in the state.

According to the bill, the Board of Secondary Education, Assam, (SEBA) and the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) will be merged to create a new body -Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB).

The bill has been brought to "regulate, supervise and develop Secondary Education in the state of Assam by merging the existing Board of Secondary Education, Assam, and Assam Higher Secondary Education Council", the preamble of the legislation stated.

The ASSEB will be headed by a chairman, to be nominated by the government. An individual vice chairman will look after each division under the chairman and he or she will be nominated by the government.

The new board will have a total of 21 members, who will have a three-year term and it can be renewed for an equal period.

"The objective is to introduce the Assam State School Education Board Bill, 2024 to develop, regulate and supervise the standards and quality in school education in the state of Assam," Education Minister Ranoj Pegu said in the Statement of Object and Reasons of the Bill.

The merger decision was taken at a meeting of the state cabinet earlier in November last year, chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Notably, the SEBA conducts the Class 10 board examination, while the Class 12 examinations are looked after by the AHSEC.

The move comes after the leaking of at least two question papers in the Class 10 board examinations by SEBA in 2023. The general science and Assamese papers were leaked in March last year.

This forced the SEBA and government to reschedule the examinations of general science, all subjects of Modern Indian Languages (MIL), including Assamese, and English (IL).

"She will be much missed for her sense of humour, plain speaking, and commitment to a range of causes linked to race, immigration and dignity of dying. She will be remembered especially for founding and setting up the Memorial Gates in central London dedicated to the memory of non-white soldiers from the Commonwealth who fought in the two great wars,"&nbsp;it notes.

Lord Karan Bilimoria, Chair of the Memorial Gates Council, expressed his sadness at the passing away of Baroness Flather the "driving force" behind the memorial and someone he knew for 30 years for breaking "one glass ceiling after another."

"I will always be grateful to her as she was the person who brought me into Parliament for the first time when she started an initiative called Asian Link', which brought in young Asians to events she organised with Cabinet ministers speaking, at the House of Lords," shared Bilimoria in his tribute.

"She was a unique personality and a force of nature. Shreela was always proud of being Indian and Asian. She was an inspiration to me and to so many and paved the way for so many of us. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her,"&nbsp;he said.

In sharp&nbsp;contrast to the economic developments in Pakistan which finds itself navigating challenging financial waters, seeking a $3 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), India has announced the interim budget of $14 billion for Jammu and Kashmir. The proposed Interim Budget for Jammu and Kashmir, amounting to Rs 1.18 lakh crore, which is approximately $14.16 billion, significantly surpasses the financial assistance provided to Pakistan by the IMF.

India’s budget proposal, unveiled on a day marked by Pakistan’s so-called “Kashmir Solidarity Day,” represents a substantial commitment to the economic development of Jammu and Kashmir. The budget, which amounts to approximately $14.16 billion, dwarfs IMF’s recent bailout announcement to Pakistan by 4.72 times, underlining India’s financial dedication to the region’s growth and stability.

The Union Territory Government is committed to pursue the path of accelerated and inclusive growth which enables its citizens to shape their destiny and discover new aspirations.”
