Dr Geingob’s remarkable journey of service to Namibia began as a freedom fighter, advocating for the nation’s independence from colonial rule. Over the years, bilateral engagements between the two nations have flourished, encompassing various sectors including politics, trade, culture, and development cooperation.

The historic Cheetah relocation project, a project under which the big cats were introduced in India, received crucial support from the Namibian government. As part of this initiative, Namibia gave eight cheetahs to India. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally received these cheetahs, and they were subsequently released into the Kuno Wildlife Sanctuary in September 2022.&nbsp;

India’s commitment to supporting Namibia’s development journey is evident in various initiatives, including investments in key sectors such as mining, manufacturing, and services.&nbsp;

Additionally, India extends support to Namibia in defence, health, energy, and agriculture sectors, offering numerous capacity-building opportunities to Namibians through scholarship programmes and other capacity-building schemes.

Beyond bilateral engagements, India and Namibia have collaborated closely in multilateral fora, amplifying each other’s voices on global issues of mutual concern. The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) raised its world economic growth forecast for 2024, on Monday (Feb 5) and lifted the outlook for India’s economy as well. However, the Paris-based organisation warned that the conflict in the Middle East posed a threat to global growth as disruptions in Red Sea shipping may increase consumer prices.

<h2>About India’s growth forecast</h2>

According to the OECD’s latest growth forecast, the Indian economy is expected to grow 6.2 per cent which is up from 6.1 per cent predicted in its November report. Meanwhile, the prediction for 2025 in both reports remained unchanged at 6.5 per cent.&nbsp;

The OECD’s latest report noted that “clear signs of strong near-term momentum continue in India, relative weakness in Europe, and mild near-term growth in most other major economies.”&nbsp;

India is also expected to expand steadily over the next two years, according to the OECD, due to “strong investment growth” and GDP rising by more than six per cent per annum.&nbsp;

The report also noted that in countries like Brazil, India, Indonesia, Mexico and South Africa, the inflation is expected to ease and converge on or towards the central bank targets by the end of next year.&nbsp;

<h2>What about global growth?</h2>

According to the Paris-based organisation, the global economy is on course to hold up better this year than expected with world economic growth expected at 2.9 per cent, which is up from 2.7 per cent predicted in its previous forecast.&nbsp;

Global growth “proved unexpectedly resilient” in 2023, reaching 3.1 per cent, according to the report and the inflation declined faster than anticipated.&nbsp;

“The global economy has shown real resilience amid the high inflation of the past two years and the necessary monetary policy tightening. Growth has held up, and we expect inflation to be back to central bank targets by the end of 2025 in most G20 economies,” said OECD Secretary-General Mathias Cormann, in a statement.&nbsp;

The global growth is also said to have been expanded as the United States economy is expected to grow 2.1 per cent in 2024 which is up from 1.5 per cent predicted in OECD’s November forecast as lower inflation boosted wage growth and is expected to trigger interest rate cuts, said the organisation.&nbsp;

The growth forecast for the US economy for 2025 remained unchanged at 1.7 per cent.&nbsp;

<h2>The Middle East factor</h2>

According to the OECD, the attacks on Red Sea shipping lanes by Yemen’s Houthi rebels and the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza could add to inflationary pressures.&nbsp;

Houthis have said that they are targeting Israel-linked ships in solidarity with the Palestinians. Meanwhile, the US and the United Kingdom have responded with strikes against the Houthis.&nbsp;

“High geopolitical tensions are a significant near-term risk to activity and inflation, particularly if the conflict in the Middle East were to disrupt energy markets,” said the OECD report.&nbsp;

Similarly, OECD chief economist Clare Lombardelli, noted that the attacks on Red Sea shipping are already affecting the trade. “Freight rates have more than doubled since the end of last year,” Lombardelli said at a news conference.&nbsp;

The OECD warned that the increase in shipping costs, if persistent, could add 0.4 percentage points to consumer prices inflation after about a year.&nbsp;

The US State Department said earlier that it has made a determination approving the possible foreign military sale to the government of India of the MQ-9B Remotely Piloted Aircraft and related equipment for an estimated cost of $3.99 billion.

"This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by helping to strengthen the US-Indian strategic relationship and to improve the security of a major defence partner which continues to be an important force for political stability, peace, and economic progress in the Indo-Pacific and South Asia region," said DSCA in a notification.

To address possible concerns surrounding whether US would be arming India, the agency has clearly shared that provision of the remotely piloted aircraft will "not alter the basic military balance in the region."

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems will be the principal contractor for the deal.

"Implementation of this proposed sale will not require the assignment of any additional US Government or contractor representatives to India. There will be no adverse impact on US defence readiness as a result of this proposed sale," DSCA said.

MQ-9B SkyGuardian: India moves closer to securing US approval for drones

India has recently unveiled its interim budget for the upcoming fiscal year, allocating $580 billion for various expenditures commencing on April 1. The budget, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, reflects the economic priorities of the nation. But what goes into earning every rupee that contributes to this massive financial plan?

Breaking down the sources of income, it is revealed that 28 paise of every rupee comes from government borrowings. Income tax follows closely, contributing 19 paise, while Goods and Services Tax (GST) contributes 18 paise. The corporate sector adds 17 paise, and customs and excise duties together contribute 9 paise. The remaining 9 paise come from various other sources, showcasing a diverse revenue stream.

Turning the focus to expenditures, one-fifth of the government's budget goes into paying interest on loans, reflecting the economic challenge of managing existing debt. As a federal country, every 16 paise earned is shared with the states and union territories, emphasising cooperative fiscal responsibility.

Government schemes account for at least 24 paise. Pensions and subsidies make up 10 paise, while defence spending constitutes 8 paise. Finance Commission-related fund transfers and other expenses collectively take away the remaining 22 paise.

This comprehensive breakdown of how each rupee is earned and spent provides a glimpse into India's economic health and its ambitious goal to emerge as a developed country by 2047. &nbsp;

Executing the orders of an Indian local court, the administration of the northern city of Varanasi on Thursday morning (Feb 1) allowed Hindu devotees to worship in the basement or 'Vyaas Ji ka Tehkana' in the southern part of the Gyanvapi mosque complex. Prior to the morning pooja (worship), Varanasi's District Magistrate, S Rajalingam, and Commissioner of Police, Ashok Mutha Jain held a meeting around midnight in the nearby Kashi Vishwanath Dham premises and chalked a plan for the devotees to offer service without any impediment. A passage was cleared and barricades put up on both sides to facilitate smooth access to the southern cellar, ensuring unhindered observance of the rituals. Vishnu Shankar Jain, one of the attorneys representing the Hindu side in the case took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to confirm the start of rituals. "The SG has complied with the orders of the court. Shayan arti done by a pujari of KVM Trust after putting up idols. An Akhand Jyoti started in front of them. Daily Arti of all above deities- Morning Mangla Arti, Bhog Arti, evening arti, late sunset evening aarti, Shayan aarti," wrote Jain. The SG has complied with the orders of the court. "We saw the Nandi bull. We have been waiting since yesterday to offer prayers. The temple should be built. Watch | Gyanvapi verdict: Court allows Hindus to offer prayers in Gyanvapi mosque's basement × What did the court say? The Varanasi District Court on Wednesday (Jan 31) granted permission for Hindu devotees to worship inside the sealed 'Vyas ji Ka Tehkhana' area in the basement of the disputed Gyanvapi mosque. "Today's decision raises hopes that one day the entire complex will be ours. After today's court order, we will talk to the district administration tomorrow," said Kashi Vishwanath Trust chief Nagendra Pandey after the verdict. In the basement of the mosque, there are four 'tehkhanas' or cellars. Currently, one is under the ownership of the Vyas family, the former residents of the premises. Vyas has filed a petition requesting permission to access the cellar and resume the pooja, claiming that it was stopped arbitrarily by an order of a former state government. With an aim to boost participation of women in the country's workforce, India's Ministry of Labour and Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD) have launched a survey to gather details about female workers already part of the workforce. The government has also issued an advisory on the matter.

The Employee's Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), which is one of world's largest social security agencies, has begun sending a survey on mobile devices in India. The survey is being sent via SMS, WhatsApp and even e-mails. The survey includes a questionnaire which has questions about the recipients' workplaces and support they provide to female workers. The survey also asks the recipients to rate their workplaces and asks about facilities such as late-night transportation, internal committee for handling sexual harassment complaints, childcare centres and more.

“The employers’ rating survey (is) to help us gauge the progress and efforts of employers based on specific facilities," said a senior WCD ministry official as quoted by Mint.

“This initiative is a step towards accountability and recognition of those who actively contribute to a more inclusive work environment."

The DoS is an umbrella body, which covers the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the space sector regulator IN-SPACe (Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre), other related centres, associated academic and research institutions, etc.&nbsp;

As per the data shared in the Demand for Grants document, this proposed budget allocation of Rs 13,042 crore&nbsp;for 2024-25 is a step up from the revised estimate of $1.33 billion (Rs 11,070 crore) for 2023-24. While this is an increase of 17.8 per cent, it would take considerable time to know how much of this proposed sum&nbsp;would be allocated eventually.

However, when comparing the proposed budget allocation for 2023-24 (Rs 12,543 crore&nbsp;or approx $1.56 billion)and the proposed allocation for 2024-25 (Rs 13,042 crore&nbsp;or approx $1.63 billion), the hike is barely Rs 500 crore&nbsp;or approximately $62 million, which translates to four per cent&nbsp;hike.

It is noteworthy that the government-run Indian space agency ISRO has been assigned significantly challenging technological tasks by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In October 2023, Prime Minister Modi set a roadmap for ISRO's future endeavours and even stated specific deadlines for these projects.&nbsp;

Setting up a ‘Bharatiya Antariksha Station’ (Indian Space Station) by 2035 and sending the first Indian to the Moon by 2040, are among the targets. Therefore, it raises questions about whether such a modest proposed hike in funding would be adequate to meet the challenges that have been put forth.&nbsp;

The Department of Space had also been asked to develop a roadmap for Lunar exploration, which would encompass a series of Chandrayaan missions, the development of a Next Generation Launch Vehicle (NGLV), construction of a new launch pad, setting up human-centric laboratories and associated technologies. In addition to this, Prime Minister Modi has also called upon Indian scientists to work towards interplanetary missions such as a Venus orbiter and a Mars lander.&nbsp;

Since 2018, ISRO has been working on executing its maiden human spaceflight mission, under a programme known as 'Gaganyaan'. This is an entirely indigenous effort to ferry Indian astronauts (specially trained Indian Air Force test pilots) to space and bring them back safely. Along with routine launch activities and satellite building for India’s own needs, ISRO would also have to carry out research and development on new technologies and components that would enable them to achieve their future goals. The Indian finance minister also spoke about how the government will adopt economic policies that foster and sustain growth and facilitate inclusive and sustainable development.&nbsp;

<h2>Focus on green energy</h2>

In the interim Budget, the finance minister has allocated significant resources to bolster the green energy sector including a viability gap funding to harness offshore wind energy, setting up coal gasification and liquefaction projects, and so on.&nbsp;

The gap funding would be used for the development of one gigawatt (GW) of offshore wind energy, which would reduce India’s reliance on fossil fuels.&nbsp;

Additionally, the Indian government also plans to set up coal gasification and liquefaction projects capable of processing 100 metric tonnes (MT) by 2030, which will help reduce imports of natural gas, methanol, and ammonia.

The government has said that it would mandate the blending of Compressed BioGas (CBG) in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) for transportation and Piped Natural Gas (PNG) for domestic use. These measures are aimed at reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality.&nbsp;

India Budget 2024: ‘Garib, Mahilayen, Yuva, Annadata,’ key takeaways from Sitharaman’s speech

Budget 2024: The budget of a country as huge as India is likely to include a lot of number-crunching and complex descriptions of matters. But provisions for youth is one area everyone has their eyes on. As she presented the interim Budget 2024, India's Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman spoke about steps PM Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Partry (BJP) government had taken to benefit the youth.

During her speech in the Parliament of India, she appeared to project the government's vision for the Indian youth. This particular budget, though called interim, is important as general elections are due in India in a matter of months. Public perception, especially in election year indeed matters.

At first, the finance minister took a review of government activities&nbsp;so far in this area.

She said in her speech that India's prosperity is dependent on adequately equipping and empowering the youth. She said that the new education policy (National Education Policy 2020) has ushered in transformational changes.

"PM ScHools for Rising India (PM SHRI) are delivering quality teaching, and nurturing holistic and well-rounded individuals," she said.

Sitharaman then spoke about the Skill India Mission, saying that the programme has so far trained 1.4 crore (14 million) Indian youngsters and has been reskilling and upskilling 54 lakh (5.4 million) youths.

"[The mission has] established 3000 new ITIs. A large number of new institutions of higher learning, namely 7 IITs, 16 IIITs, 7 IIMs, 15 AIIMS and 390 universities have been set up," said Sitharaman.

She talked&nbsp;about what the government has done to encourage entrepreneurship among youth.&nbsp;

At first, the finance minister took a review of government activities so far in this area. She talked about what the government has done to encourage entrepreneurship among youth. "The PM Mudra Yojana has sanctioned Rs 43 crore loans (USD 5.1 million) aggregating to 22.5 lakh crore for the entrepreneurial aspirations of our youth. Besides that, Fund of Funds, Start Up India, and Start Up Credit Guarantee schemes are assisting our youth," she said, adding that through their entrepreneurial skills, Indian youths are becoming 'rozgardata' (employment providers). India Budget 2024 | 250 million people came out of poverty in the last 10 years: FM Sitharaman

As the world’s fifth-largest economy waits for the interim budget scheduled to be presented on Thursday (Feb 1) by the Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, all eyes are on the infrastructure sector, particularly railways. Over the years, the current government has allocated thousands of crores to the development of the country’s railways, and this year is expected to be no different.

<h2>Railway Budget 2023-24</h2>

The Indian Railway Ministry was allocated a record $28.9 billion (Rs 2.4 lakh crore) in budgetary support for the financial year 2023-24. The minister said the amount was nine times what was allocated in the FY 2013-14.&nbsp;

Between April 1, 2023, and December 31, 2023 – in the first nine months of the fiscal year, the Indian Railways witnessed a record capital expenditure (capex) with 75 per cent of the total allocated capex budget spent, according to the official data.&nbsp;

This also includes a massive $22 billion (Rs 1.85 lakh crore) which had been allocated for capital expenditure in the current fiscal taking the total to $31.5 billion (Rs 2.62 lakh crore).&nbsp;

The 75 per cent of the total allocated funds spent amounts to a whopping $23.6 billion (Rs 1.95 lakh crore) which according to the government, was dedicated to infrastructural development and passenger safety of the Indian Railways. &nbsp;

The funds are also dedicated to crucial projects such as the development of new rail lines, the doubling of existing lines, gauge conversion, and the enhancement of passenger amenities, said the government.

The allocated funds were to be used to build new trains, and railway tracks as well as increase passenger facilities and ramp up the infrastructure to a world-class level.&nbsp;

In 2023, the Indian Railways witnessed dozens of new Vande Bharat trains, along new routes, as well as the redevelopment of railway stations.&nbsp;

The announcement on Thursday is only an interim one and it will provide an outline of what can be expected for the actual budget after the 2024 general elections when the new government takes over.&nbsp;

Analysts, as per media reports, are optimistic that the upcoming budget will witness a surge in the capex spending on infrastructure, especially the railway sector.&nbsp;

It is also believed that the proposed India-Middle East-Europe economic corridor – an ambitious project to connect India, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Europe – will not only give a major boost to the sector but also be a long-term growth driver.

Therefore, rail stocks are expected to keep up the momentum in 2024 as well.&nbsp;

Budget 2024: What to expect for India’s railway sector?

The Narendra Modi government will be presenting its final budget of its second tenure on Thursday (February 1). Ahead of the budget, the middle class of the country is once again looking towards Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for announcements that might ease the burden on their pockets.

WION takes a quick look at some of the announcements that the middle class can expect from the budget.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<h2>Making taxation regime middle-class friendly</h2>

Although the tax regime is unlikely to be altered, the middle class would be hoping that the government shows some leniency. Ever since the Modi administration changed the taxation scheme to push more taxpayers into the new regime, there has been a sense of discontentment.&nbsp;

The majority views the new tax regime&nbsp;as disincentivising savings as those investments available in the old tax regime do not apply to those who opted for the new tax regime. Since the middle class is big on savings, government could raise the basic exemption limit by at least Rs 50,000 under both regimes.&nbsp;

Moreover, if the restriction pertaining to the mandatory requirement&nbsp;of forgoing of house rent allowance (HRA) deduction by salaried individuals is eased,&nbsp;it could pivot more taxpayers to the new regime.&nbsp;

<h2>Temper inflation</h2>

The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) went bust in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections due to sky-high inflation rates that pushed the middle class to the edge. Hence, the interim budget assumes greater importance. The budget should focus on mitigating food supply volatility and reduce India's inflation.&nbsp;

<h2>More employment</h2>

Often seen as a catalyst for change, the middle class will hope that Sitharaman's budget delivers more employment opportunities. With elections in focus, there is a sense of anticipation that the government will announce measures that create more employment avenues for the youth.&nbsp;

Affordable housing has long been the dream of the middle class. However, the dream has taken a slight hit after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) [India's central bank] pushed forward the loan rates to tame inflation.

If the interim budget can manage to trim the interest rates on home loans, it would be a massive statement and further strengthen the BJP's hold on its most efficient vote bank. Apart from low-interest rates, subsidies in the housing sector may also go a long way.&nbsp;

The Narendra Modi government will be presenting its final budget of its second tenure on Thursday (February 1). Ahead of the budget, the middle class of the country is once again looking towards Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for announcements that might ease the burden on their pockets. WION takes a quick look at some of the announcements that the middle class can expect from the budget. Making taxation regime middle-class friendly Although the tax regime is unlikely to be altered, the middle class would be hoping that the government shows some leniency. Ever since the Modi administration changed the taxation scheme to push more taxpayers into the new regime, there has been a sense of discontentment. The majority views the new tax regime as disincentivising savings as those investments available in the old tax regime do not apply to those who opted for the new tax regime. Since the middle class is big on savings, government could raise the basic exemption limit by at least Rs 50,000 under both regimes. Moreover, if the restriction pertaining to the mandatory requirement of forgoing of house rent allowance (HRA) deduction by salaried individuals is eased, it could pivot more taxpayers to the new regime. Temper inflation The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) went bust in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections due to sky-high inflation rates that pushed the middle class to the edge. Hence, the interim budget assumes greater importance. The budget should focus on mitigating food supply volatility and reduce India's inflation. More employment Often seen as a catalyst for change, the middle class will hope that Sitharaman's budget delivers more employment opportunities. With elections in focus, there is a sense of anticipation that the government will announce measures that create more employment avenues for the youth. India Budget 2024: What announcements middle class can expect from interim budget

The International Monetary Fund (IMF), on Tuesday (January 30) improved its forecast of growth of global economy citing "resilience" from major economies including India. The updated global growth figure is 0.2 percentage points higher than its previous forecast in October. The IMF said that Indian economy may grow by 6.5&nbsp;per cent, up by 0.2 per cent.

"We had simultaneously less inflation and more growth," IMF chief economist Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas told reporters ahead of the report's publication as quoted by AFP.

"It's not just a US story. There was a lot of resilience in many, many parts of the world in the last year and going into 2024," he said, highlighting countries including China, Russia, Brazil and India.

Despite the fresh revision indicating hope for the global economy, the IMF has said that the global growth is likely to remain below 3.8 per cent, the recent historical average. The factors it cited were elevated interest rates, waning government support in the wake of withdrawal of the Covid pandemic and low productivity.

The world body has kept overall inflation outlook unchanged at 5.8 per cent. In advanced economies, the inflation is predicted to be 2.6 per cent this year. There is a decrease of 0.4 per cent from the forecast in October.

In case of developing economies, the average annual inflation is predicted to be 8.1 per cent. This is 0.3 percentage points up from the previous prediction.

<h2>US, China behind the boost</h2>

The IMF has said that performance by the United States and China has been behind the increased outlook. Both countries' growth prospects in 2024 saw a significant boost. This means that US and China will experience less substantial slowdown than previously predicted.

The IMF has predicted that the US economy will grow by 2.1 per cent this year.

In absolute terms, the percentage figure is less than 2.5 per cent predicted in 2023 but IMF has attributed this to "statistical carryover effects from the stronger-than-expected growth outcome for 2023."

In case of China, its economy is expected to hit a growth of 4.6 per cent. This is down from 5.2 per cent last year but the latest figure is better than what was previously anticipated.

<h2>Gloom in Europe</h2>

Things might look brighter in the US, China and other Asian countries, the picture in Europe doesn't look very encouraging.

The IMF has highlighted "notably subdued growth in the euro area."

Among the G7 nations, Germany is on path to become the slowest-growing economy with growth of just 0.5 per cent this year. This will follow a 0.3 per cent contraction in 2023.

Ahead of India's upcoming budget, all eyes are on capital expenditure (capex) as the government continues to&nbsp;focus on&nbsp;infrastructure projects. With the current fiscal year projecting a government spending of around $120 billion; analysts are optimistic that the upcoming budget will witness a surge of at least 10 per cent in capex.<o:p></o:p>

Government's big infra push<o:p></o:p>

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Indian government has significantly upped its game in capex. The figures have more than doubled since the 2020-21 budget, highlighting a remarkable commitment to fortify the nation's economic foundation. This boost in government spending has played a pivotal role in ensuring India's economic resilience amid the global slowdown.<o:p></o:p>

Key role of capex in development<o:p></o:p>

Capital expenditure primarily channels funds into critical infrastructure projects, such as roads and railways. Beyond immediate economic stimulus, this investment aims to enhance productivity, job creation, and stimulate long-term demand and trade.<o:p></o:p>

The private sector, which faced subdued capex between 2020 and 2022 due to global uncertainties, has seen a positive shift. In the April-September 2023 period, India's private businesses announced capex exceeding $75 billion. This marked a staggering 40 per cent increase compared to the ten-year average, indicating a robust economic outlook for the country.<o:p></o:p>

Analysts' expectations<o:p></o:p>

Analysts are closely monitoring the interim budget, recognising its potential to shape private capex. While 2023 showcased a remarkable rebound for the private sector, the upcoming budget is expected to provide crucial cues that will influence the trajectory of private investment in the nation.<o:p></o:p>

The collective surge in both government and private capex underscores India's economic buoyancy. Increased investment in infrastructure and development projects is set to not only fortify the economy but also position India as a key player in the global economic landscape.<o:p></o:p>

The Madras High Court on Tuesday directed the Tamil Nadu government to place signs in all Hindu temples, explicitly stating that non-Hindus are restricted beyond the 'Kodimaram' (flagpole) area. It also said that Hindus have the fundamental right to profess and practice their religion.

Justice S Srimathy of the HC's Madurai Bench issued this judgement while considering a plea from D Senthilkumar, who sought exclusive access for Hindus to the Arulmigu Palani Dhandayuthapani Swamy temple in Tamil Nadu's Dindigul district and its sub-temples.

In addition to restricted access, the petitioner requested the installation of display boards at temple entrances conveying this limitation.

<h2>What would the boards say?</h2>

The court specified that the boards should indicate that "non-Hindus are not allowed inside the temple after Kodimaram."&nbsp;

Non-Hindus claiming access to a particular deity must provide an undertaking affirming their faith and commitment to Hindu customs, said the court.

"The respondents are directed not to allow the non-Hindus who do not believe in Hindu religion. If any Non-Hindu claims to visit a particular deity in the temple, then the respondents shall obtain an undertaking from the said non-Hindu that he has faith in the deity and he would follow the customs and practices of Hindu religion and also abide by the temple customs and on such undertaking the said non-Hindu may be allowed to visit the temple."

The judgement also stressed the importance of maintaining temple premises in accordance with rules and customs.

"The respondents shall maintain the temple premises by strictly following the agamas (temple rules), customs and practices of the temple," said the judge, as reported by PTI.

Further, rejecting the respondents' plea to limit the order to the Palani temple the court said: "But the issue raised is a larger issue and the same ought to be applicable to all Hindu temples, hence the plea of the respondents is rejected. As stated supra, these restrictions would ensure communal harmony among different religions and ensure peace in the society."&nbsp;

"Therefore the State Government, the HR&amp;CE department, the respondents and all persons who are involved in temple administration are directed to follow the directions to all Hindu temples."&nbsp;

<h2>Alleged incidents that hurt Hindu sentiments</h2>

The court referred to incidents of non-Hindus allegedly entering temples and engaging in activities contrary to Hindu customs. This included reports of people bringing in non-vegetarian food into Arulmighu Brahadeeswarar Temple premises and bringing in "their sacred book" near the sanctum&nbsp;sanctorum of the Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple.&nbsp;

"People belonging to other religions have the right to profess and practice their religion. But the customs and practice of their respective religion cannot be interfering with and any interference ought to be curtailed."

"The temple is not (a) picnic spot or tourist spot. Even in Arulmighu Brahadeeswarar Temple, Thanjavur the other religion people are allowed to admire and appreciate the architectural monuments of the temple, but not after Kodimaram."

"While admiring the architectural monuments the people cannot use the premises as picnic spot or tourist spot and the temples premises ought to be maintained with reverence and as per agamas. Therefore, the rights guaranteed under the Articles are not granting any right to the respondents to allow the other religion people if they do not have any faith and belief in the Hindu religion. Moreover, the rights are guaranteed to all religions and there cannot be any bias in applying such rights," said the court.

It emphasised the need to protect the fundamental rights guaranteed under the constitution and ensure the sanctity of Hindu temples.

India: Madras High Court directs placement of signs restricting non-Hindus in temple premises

India has come a long way in its start-up story. From just 350 in 2014, India had over 90,000 start-ups in 2023. At least 111 of them are unicorns - start-ups that are valued over $1 billion. India now has the third-largest start-up ecosystem in the world.&nbsp;

Despite these glitzy numbers, 2023 was a less-than-ideal year for the start-up ecosystem in India.&nbsp;

Only two start-ups turned unicorn last year - quick delivery service Zepto and financial services Incred. The 'unicorns' are considered important since they act as a catalyst for the larger ecosystem and help usher in more investments.

Overall funding dried up.&nbsp; In 2023, startups received $4.2 billion in late-stage funding. This was a 73 per cent drop from 2022. Had it not been for December, this figure would have been much higher.&nbsp;

Late-stage funding refers to funds infused to start-ups that show steady revenue growth.&nbsp;

The weak venture capital activity worldwide played a role in 'funding winter', with investments falling to its lowest level in the last seven years.&nbsp;

Moreover, last year saw at least eight big start-ups facing markdown in their valuations. Unsustainable business models, especially after the pandemic-driven boost in 2021 and 2022, and frequent regulatory crackdowns were some of the reasons for the markdowns.&nbsp;

The recent reports of layoffs at IPO-bound start-ups Swiggy and Flipkart have only added to the uncertainty in the ecosystem.&nbsp;

WION&nbsp;spoke to a number of start-up founders to get a sense of what lies ahead for India’s startup sector.&nbsp;

Outlook for 2024 and beyond<o:p></o:p>

Ashish Bhatia, Founder and CEO, India Accelerator, is optimistic about the next five years, seeing them as the era of "exciting possibilities".&nbsp;

"It is a time where startups can grow like never before, bring in fresh ideas, and bounce back from challenges stronger than ever," says Bhatia.&nbsp;

Debleena Majumdar, Vice-President of Strategy and Research at the Artha School of Entrepreneurship, does not expect any immediate or drastic changes in the start-up ecosystem.&nbsp;

But she expects more inclusivity in the ecosystem in the next few years. A recent WISER report shows that women occupy more senior roles at startups compared to corporates, but only five in 10 women end up at director-level positions at the end of a decade.&nbsp;

"A more inclusive ecosystem could mean a higher presence of women founders, more localised entrepreneurship across sectors and more pathways for value creation, from mergers, acquisitions to well planned IPOs," she says.&nbsp;

Samyak Chakrabarty, Founder of ed-tech platform Workverse, predicts a major shift in perspective of both founders and investors, when it comes to valuing a start-up.&nbsp;

"Start-ups and investors will move from chasing valuations to creating real value - for customers, employees and selves. The initial startup boom was fuelled by the 'burn more than you earn' approach which eventually led to more failures than sustainable success stories," Chakrabarty said.

Chakrabarty's statement is a reminder of the perennial struggle that start-ups face to turn a profit. An Inc42 analysis shows that 82 out of the 112 top start-ups recorded a combined loss of nearly $7 billion dollars last year.&nbsp;

Harkunwar Singh, Co-founder and CEO of ed-tech platform Novatr, believes that the next few years will be a "great time" for tech-first edtech/up-skilling startups.

With over 230 million students in the k-12 system, India is a huge untapped market for the education and skills sector. It is estimated that the sector will be worth $313 billion by 2030, fuelled by cheap data and internet penetration.&nbsp;

"Increasing internet accessibility and the demographic dividend of a burgeoning youth will boost entrepreneurship and make way for innovative solutions that address the diversity of needs in our country," argues Singh.&nbsp;

While&nbsp;funding crunches, regulatory complexities, and problems securing skilled talent exist, he adds that the ecosystem will remain resilient.&nbsp;

Yamini Bhat, CEO and Co-founder of fin-tech start-up Vymo, says start-ups will be in a recovery phase in 2024. Investors, she adds, will look out for logically innovative startups with strong control of their finances.&nbsp;

"Increasing focus on deep-tech start-ups and how their applications can impact the broader industry," she says, adding that start-ups focusing on clean energy and climate change could define the ecosystem in the future.&nbsp;

A new report by data intelligence firm Tracnx has dubbed the 2013-2023 period as the “decade of growth in tech start-ups”. However, a Nasscom-Zinnov report shows that cash flow issues and low customer demand were among the top challenges faced by the tech start-up sector last year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Tech entrepreneurs like Darshil Shah, Founder and Director, TreadBinary, feel that pivoting to innovative technologies such as Generative AI and advanced data analytics would be the future.&nbsp;

"A supportive ecosystem and government initiatives would create a conducive environment for start-ups over the next five years," he adds.&nbsp;

Budget expectations&nbsp;<o:p></o:p>

Given the Modi government’s push for entrepreneurship and start-ups, a lot rides on the upcoming interim budget.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bhatia seeks a dedicated fund to help finance start-ups in the emerging industries, adding that the budget must focus on improving the ease of doing business and enhancing innovation.&nbsp;

“The budget, rather than being just a set of numbers, holds the potential to act as the catalyst that propels Indian startups into a new era of unprecedented innovation and global influence,” he argues.&nbsp;

Majumdar says that the Interim Budget needs to provide increased support to entrepreneurs in India's hinterland, often called 'Bharat' by India-watchers.&nbsp;

"Access to credit for small and medium businesses in 'Bharat' remains one of their key growth challenges. The government also needs to enable more multimodal infrastructure access for seamless movement of goods and people in rural and semi-urban India," she adds.

Chakrabarty argues that the biggest enabler for start-ups will be if the mindset of the Income Tax department and the Registrar of Companies can evolve and be more adaptive to realities of young companies.&nbsp;

“If the government wants more start ups to receive funding, the IT authorities need to be briefed that this is as much the country's gain as it is that of private entities,” he says.&nbsp;

Singh wants the upcoming budget to support incubation centres, foster collaboration with academia, or offer skills training programs relevant to the start-up ecosystem.&nbsp;

“The government’s vision of making India a developed country by 2047 will require concentrated investment into the education as well as the infrastructure sector,” he adds.&nbsp;

Bhatt adds that the Interim Budget must focus on grants and incentives for research and development in tech space, including fintech, clean energy, cyber security, agritech and robotics.

The tech start-ups anticipate a forward-looking 'Make in India' approach. The Interim Budget, Shah&nbsp;argues, must emphasise on streamlining Advanced Pricing Agreements (APAs) and Mutual Agreement Procedures (MAPs).&nbsp;

Both relate to global agreements between taxpayers and national administrations that offer greater transactional certainty.&nbsp;

“Clarity in these areas is expected to foster innovation and collaboration, aligning seamlessly with the 'Make in India' initiative,” the&nbsp;TreadBinary CEO adds.

"Start-ups and investors will move from chasing valuations to creating real value - for customers, employees and selves. The initial startup boom was fuelled by the 'burn more than you earn' approach which eventually led to more failures than sustainable success stories," Chakrabarty said. Chakrabarty's statement is a reminder of the perennial struggle that start-ups face to turn a profit. An Inc42 analysis shows that 82 out of the 112 top start-ups recorded a combined loss of nearly $7 billion dollars last year. Harkunwar Singh, Co-founder and CEO of ed-tech platform Novatr, believes that the next few years will be a "great time" for tech-first edtech/up-skilling startups. With over 230 million students in the k-12 system, India is a huge untapped market for the education and skills sector. It is estimated that the sector will be worth $313 billion by 2030, fuelled by cheap data and internet penetration. "Increasing internet accessibility and the demographic dividend of a burgeoning youth will boost entrepreneurship and make way for innovative solutions that address the diversity of needs in our country," argues Singh. While funding crunches, regulatory complexities, and problems securing skilled talent exist, he adds that the ecosystem will remain resilient. Yamini Bhat, CEO and Co-founder of fin-tech start-up Vymo, says start-ups will be in a recovery phase in 2024. Investors, she adds, will look out for logically innovative startups with strong control of their finances. "Increasing focus on deep-tech start-ups and how their applications can impact the broader industry," she says, adding that start-ups focusing on clean energy and climate change could define the ecosystem in the future. A new report by data intelligence firm Tracnx has dubbed the 2013-2023 period as the “decade of growth in tech start-ups”. However, a Nasscom-Zinnov report shows that cash flow issues and low customer demand were among the top challenges faced by the tech start-up sector last year. Tech entrepreneurs like Darshil Shah, Founder and Director, TreadBinary, feel that pivoting to innovative technologies such as Generative AI and advanced data analytics would be the future. "A supportive ecosystem and government initiatives would create a conducive environment for start-ups over the next five years," he adds. Budget expectations Given the Modi government’s push for entrepreneurship and start-ups, a lot rides on the upcoming interim budget. Bhatia seeks a dedicated fund to help finance start-ups in the emerging industries, adding that the budget must focus on improving the ease of doing business and enhancing innovation. “The budget, rather than being just a set of numbers, holds the potential to act as the catalyst that propels Indian startups into a new era of unprecedented innovation and global influence,” he argues. Majumdar says that the Interim Budget needs to provide increased support to entrepreneurs in India's hinterland, often called 'Bharat' by India-watchers. "Access to credit for small and medium businesses in 'Bharat' remains one of their key growth challenges. The government also needs to enable more multimodal infrastructure access for seamless movement of goods and people in rural and semi-urban India," she adds. Chakrabarty argues that the biggest enabler for start-ups will be if the mindset of the Income Tax department and the Registrar of Companies can evolve and be more adaptive to realities of young companies. “If the government wants more start ups to receive funding, the IT authorities need to be briefed that this is as much the country's gain as it is that of private entities,” he says. Singh wants the upcoming budget to support incubation centres, foster collaboration with academia, or offer skills training programs relevant to the start-up ecosystem. “The government’s vision of making India a developed country by 2047 will require concentrated investment into the education as well as the infrastructure sector,” he adds. Bhatt adds that the Interim Budget must focus on grants and incentives for research and development in tech space, including fintech, clean energy, cyber security, agritech and robotics. The tech start-ups anticipate a forward-looking 'Make in India' approach. The Interim Budget, Shah argues, must emphasise on streamlining Advanced Pricing Agreements (APAs) and Mutual Agreement Procedures (MAPs). Both relate to global agreements between taxpayers and national administrations that offer greater transactional certainty. “Clarity in these areas is expected to foster innovation and collaboration, aligning seamlessly with the 'Make in India' initiative,” the TreadBinary CEO adds.

The United States issued a record 1.4 million visas for Indians in the year 2023, which is the highest so far, slashing the visitor visa appointment wait time&nbsp;by 75 per cent.

The US Embassy and Consulates in India released a statement saying that now Indians represent one out of every 10 US visa applicants around the globe.

"In 2023, the US Embassy and Consulates in India processed a record-smashing 1.4 million US visas. Demand across all visa classes was unprecedented, with a 60 per cent increase in applications compared to 2022. Indians now represent one out of every ten US visa applicants around the world," the statement read.

With more than 7,00,000 applicants, visitor or B1 and B2 visas now recuperate to represent the second-highest number of applications in the history of the US Mission.

The improvements made in the process and the increase in the number of staff members have been dubbed as the reason behind increased efficiency in the process.

Reportedly, the appointment wait time for visitor visas has come down to only 250 days around the country from an average of 1,000 days with minimal wait time in all categories around the country.

The US consular team in India issued over 140,000 student visas in the year 2023, which is more than in any other country in the world setting a record for the third consecutive year.

“Taken individually, Mumbai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, and Chennai now stand as the top four student visa processing posts in the world. As a result of these surging numbers, Indian students have become the largest group of international graduate students in the US and make up more than a quarter of the over one million foreign students studying in the US,” the statement said.

<h2>'Employment visas remain top priority'</h2>

The US Embassy and Consulates furthermore added that employment visas remain a top priority.

Consular Team India consolidated most petition-based visa processing in Chennai and Hyderabad to increase efficiency, leading to the processing of over 3,80,000 employment visas for Indians and their family members in 2023 and allowing the US Mission to "maintain a minimal appointment wait time" for the visa applications.

In another significant development, a pilot program in 2024 would allow eligible H1B holders to renew their visas in the United States, further simplifying the process for this group.

The ones who have a pending immigrant visa petition and are ready for scheduling can now obtain an appointment within the standard, pre-pandemic appointment window, it stated.

"The US Mission continues to invest in the future of consular services in India and explore ways to provide more efficient and convenient services. These investments have included the opening of a new USD 340 million facility in Hyderabad in March 2023, the announcement of two new consulates in Ahmedabad and Bangalore, continued capital improvements to our facilities around the country, and the permanent assignment of more consular officers to India," the US Embassy and Consulates said in the statement.&nbsp;

A teenage girl preparing for the competitive Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) died by suicide on Monday (Jan 29) in India's Kota city.

She left behind a note to her parents saying she was sorry, calling herself a “loser”.

“Mummy, papa I can't do JEE. So I suicide,” the note scribbled in English said, according to police.

“I am a loser. I am worst daughter. Sorry mummy papa. Yahi last option he (this is the last option),” the note found in Niharika Singh's room added.&nbsp;

She was reportedly due to appear for the examination in a day or two.

This is the second suicide case reported in less than a week's time in Rajasthan's Kota, which is also known as the coaching hub of the country.

The incident was reported on the very day Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his annual interaction with the students preparing for their school board examinations, advised the students and their parents to not let the stress of the competition get to them.

"Lot of parents keep giving examples of other children to their children. Parents should avoid doing these things," PM Modi said.

Niharika, who lived in Shiv Vihar Colony in the city's Borekheda police station area at her family residence, was to appear for her JEE test on January 30 or 31, said circle officer DSP Dharmveer Singh.

She, according to the police, was the eldest of three sisters and her father is a security guard at a private bank in Kota.

As per news agency PTI reports, the deceased's cousin said that Niharika, who had repeated her 12th standard due to low scores, was under immense pressure for the upcoming JEE exam. However, she devoted nearly seven or eight hours to her studies every day.

Niharika's grandmother raised an alarm after she got no response knocking at the door of the 18-year-old's room.

She was found hanging from the ventilation window above the door when her family forced open the room.

In 2023, nearly 26 students allegedly committed suicide in Rajasthan's Kota where children come from different parts of the country to prepare for competitive exams like the National Entrance Exam (JEE) for admission to top engineering colleges.

“I am a loser. I am worst daughter. Sorry mummy papa. Yahi last option he (this is the last option),” the note found in Niharika Singh's room added. The bilateral relations between Maldives and India soured ever since the island's new President Mohamed Muizzu pivoted towards China. Yet another sign of this came when the island nation's government sent a lower-level representative to India's Republic Day reception in Male. Sheryna Abdul Samad, the junior foreign minister, alongside Male Mayor Adam Azim were the only two notable faces at the reception hosted by the Indian High Commission in Maldives. This is stark contrast to the past, where even presidents of the country attended the event held annually at the embassy. The absence of senior Maldivian political leaders suggested that Muizzu's office was sending a message to New Delhi. -MoS MoFA Sheryna Abdul Samad attends India's Republic day reception hosted by the Indian High Commission -Muizzu Govt sent no senior minister at the reception -First time representation at a low level, reflecting the Govt's view on India ties -Male Mayor @adamazim present https://t.co/DbBVArOhLS — Sidhant Sibal (@sidhant) January 29, 2024 × For comparison, it was former Maldives president Ibrahim Mohamed Solih who attended last year's reception. May the unbreakable bonds of friendship that have long existed between Maldives and India go from strength to strength," said Solih. The Maldivian president giving a cold shoulder to India at an all-important event should not come as a surprise. A recent report by the European Union stated that the current ruling coalition of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and the People's National Congress (PNC) used anti-India sentiments to win the elections held last December. "EU Election Observation Mission observers noted instances of derogatory language, directed towards the president [former leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih], on the side of PPM-PNC. Their campaign included anti-Indian sentiments, based on fears of Indian influences and anxiety regarding a presence of Indian military personnel inside the country," read the report.
