IND vs ENG: Debutant Akash Deep rips apart England's top order on Day 1 of Ranchi Test - Watch

Former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn has asked Indian fans to not worry about Jasprit Bumrah's workload management after the pacer opted to rest for the India-England fourth Test in Ranchi, which gets underway on Feb 23 (Friday). The speedster was released from the Indian squad ahead of the penultimate Test to manage his workload with Mukesh Kumar coming in his place.

Steyn feels fans should not worry about Bumrah's workload as he opined that there is good communication between the pacer and the Indian team management, adding he deserves to take some rest in between given the amount of cricket and travel.

Speaking to TOI, Steyn said, "I don't know how his workload is going right now. I suppose being an Indian player there is going to be a lot of workload. There is a lot of cricket in India these days. The Indian team is playing a lot of cricket and people want to play against them. They are travelling most of the time. So, there is a huge percentage of the bowlers who will be bowling a lot of overs. Bumrah could be one of those guys. But he is being managed quite well."

He mentioned, "There is good communication with Bumrah himself about what he wants to do, when he wants to play and when he takes time off. It seems like India really doesn't miss him because the stepped-in bowlers are up to the standards. It is a very good thing about Indian fast bowling."

'Don't worry about Jasprit Bumrah, he is...': SA legend Dale Steyn on the pacer skipping Ranchi Test

Ahead of the fourth and penultimate Test versus India, England captain Ben Stokes has been left stunned with the pitch for the Ranchi Test. The match gets underway on Friday (Feb 23) at the JSCA Stadium in Ranchi and Stokes claimed that he has 'never seen something like this before' while talking about the pitch on offer.

On the eve of the fourth Test, Stokes told BBC Sport, "I've never seen something like that before. I have got no idea so I don't know what could happen. If you looked down one side of opposite ends it just looked different to what I am used to seeing, especially out in India. It looked green and grassy up in the changing rooms, but then you go out there it looked different: very dark and crumbly and quite a few cracks in it."

On the other hand, vice-captain Ollie Pope pointed out a significant feature of the pitch, noting an abundance of rough patches outside the "right-hander's off stump" which will likely assist India's premier spinner R Ashwin. "It kind of looks like one half is good and then there's a lot of platey cracks at the other. At the minute, it looks like batting from the far end, there's rough outside the right-hander's off-stump. For example, Ashwin's going to bowl from that end from over-the-wicket because he might want to bowl it into the rough," Pope was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

He added, "And from this end, it's outside the left-hander's off-stump. That's how we see it at the minute. I think we will see what happens tomorrow after the Indian team has looked at the wicket, then make a decision from there."

England trail the five-match series 1-2 after a whopping 434-run loss in the third Test in Rajkot. Stokes opined on the huge loss, saying that England have left behind the Rajkot drubbing and are looking forward to the remaining two games to win the series 3-2. In this regard, Stokes claimed, "It's sport. You get plaudits when it goes well and not when it doesn't. It's part of it, I've been around long enough to know that, but we crack on. Defeats like last week can have a bigger effect on the team that it needs to be. But I'm comfortable with how I addressed that. I know it's the next game that counts. Me, as a person, and I'm sure every player in the dressing room has reflected in some way on that game. But in terms of the result, no."

'Never seen something like that': Ben Stokes stunned by Ranchi pitch before India vs England 4th Test

India's batting coach Vikram Rathour opened up on the Ranchi pitch ahead of Rohit Sharma & Co.'s fourth and penultimate Test versus England, which gets underway on Feb 23 (Friday). A lot has been said and written about the Ranchi pitch, which is said to have a lot of cracks. It is expected to assist the spinners the most so far in the ongoing five-match series.

With India resting ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah, it is a strong indication that the Ranchi pitch will favour spinners. Thus, Rathour also joined the bandwagon and commented on the pitch in the pre-match presser on Thursday (Feb 22). The batting coach admitted that the surface will offer spin but isn't sure by when the spinners will come into play.

"Every time we play in India, there's a question mark on the pitch. It's a typical Indian wicket. There are cracks. It will turn. But how much and from when we aren't sure," Rathour said to the reporters.

The England team management is also expecting a lot of spin to be on offer. They have already named their playing XI for the Ranchi Test (including three spinners): Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope (vc), Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes (C), Ben Foakes (wk), Tom Hartley, Ollie Robinson, James Anderson, Shoaib Bashir

4th Test: 'Every time we play in India, there's question mark on...' - Indian batting coach on Ranchi pitch

Former England captain-turned-commentator Nasser Hussain has urged Ben Stokes & Co. to play 'smart cricket' and adapt well in the upcoming fourth and penultimate Test versus India in Ranchi. The Ranchi Test kicks off on Friday (Feb 23) with the visitors in a do-or-die spot as they have conceded a 2-1 lead to India following the Rajkot drubbing.

Hussain mentioned that England cannot just rely on their Bazball approach and schooled them that Test cricket is all about adapting and playing smartly. In his coloum for the Daily Mail, Hussain wrote, "You can't just fall back on the old 'this is the way we play' mantra, because Test cricket is all about adapting to conditions - especially in India, where the nature of the pitch can change almost overnight during the course of a five-day Test. If you get in, you need to make it count. Look at the first three Tests: England won the first after Ollie Pope's magnificent 196, before India hit back with successive double-centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal and 131 from Rohit Sharma."

In addition, Hussain cited England's use of the short-ball technique in last year's home Ashes as an example of how well they recovered to draw the five-match series 2-2 after falling behind in the opening two Tests. Stokes & Co. fell behind 0-2 in the series but staged a remarkable comeback eventually. Thus, Hussain feels the visitors have to prove to the critics that Bazball is all about smart cricket.

"They've done it before. Think back to the Ashes, where they became better at playing the short ball after that hook-happy collapse at Lord's. Bazball, as they keep telling us, is about smart cricket, not headless cricket. They need to prove that point again now," opined Hussain.

The ex-cricketer also opened up on Jonny Bairstow's struggles in the ongoing series, where he has managed only 102 runs in six innings at 26. "For Bairstow, the key - as it is for so many visiting batters in India - is to get through those first 20-30 balls when it's turning and Ravindra Jadeja is spearing them into your pads, making it tough to sweep. If he can do that, he can be destructive, but he has to give himself a chance. Perhaps the fact that he has a point to prove will bring out the best in him," Hussain added.

Jurel hoping to meet MS Dhoni in Ranchi

"I was just watching him and I stood up and started thinking is this MS Dhoni standing in front of me? My first interaction with him was in IPL 2021 which was my first season. At that time, I was pinching myself to see whether it was a dream. My dream is to meet Mahi bhai, especially after the match after an international game. Whenever I have talked to him, I have always learned something new from him so I hope that I get a chance to meet him during the fourth Test at Ranchi," Jurel said in a video posted by BCCI.

Like Dhoni, Jurel also keeps gloves for India and will look to follow in the footsteps of the legendary player. At just 23, the wicketkeeper-batter is considered one of the rising stars of the nation and could be in for a long stint with the national team. Jurel scored 46 runs in the only innings against England in Rajkot while he did not come out to bat in the second innings.

It is expected that Jurel will keep his place in the Playing XI for the Ranchi Test after KL Rahul was ruled out of the match. The news of Rahul and Bumrah missing out on the fourth Test was made officially on Tuesday (Feb 20) with the latter rested for the match. Rahul’s exclusion will be an added benefit for Jurel as he looks to extend his stay with the national side.

Considering Ishan Kishan and KS Bharat are out of contention for a place in the Test team, the Uttar Pradesh batter will look to pounce on the opportunity. Rahul remains the toughest competition for Jurel to make the Playing XI; however, his lack of fitness means that the Rajasthan Royals’ IPL star will get an extended run in his absence.

Details 🔽 #TeamIndia | #INDvENG | @IDFCFIRSTBank https://t.co/0rjEtHJ3rH pic.twitter.com/C5PcZLHhkY — BCCI (@BCCI) February 20, 2024 × Jurel hoping to meet MS Dhoni in Ranchi "I was just watching him and I stood up and started thinking is this MS Dhoni standing in front of me? ALSO READ | IND vs ENG: Unfit KL Rahul out of fourth Test; Jasprit Bumrah rested, BCCI confirms It is expected that Jurel will keep his place in the Playing XI for the Ranchi Test after KL Rahul was ruled out of the match.

India and England are set to lock horns in the fourth and penultimate Test at the JSCA Stadium, Ranchi with Rohit Sharma-led hosts leading the series 2-1. Ahead of the fourth Test, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that Jasprit Bumrah has been released from the squad to manage his workload. Hence, the team management is likely to play uncapped pacer Akash Deep in place of Bumrah.

Akash Deep impressed the Indian team management with his bowling during India A versus England Lions matches, where he claimed 10 wickets in two red-ball games in Ahmedabad. While India have also included Mukesh Kumar in the squad -- who played the Visakhapatnam Test and partnered Bumrah -- the home side are willing to try Akash ahead of Mukesh. Mukesh didn't impress in the second Test, in Vizag, where he was expensive and claimed only one wicket (of tailender Shoaib Bashir).

Talking about Akash, the 27-year-old fast bowler has partnered Mukesh for Bengal in red-ball cricket. He has scalped 104 wickets from 30 first-class games, at an average of 23.58.

Ind vs Eng: Pacer Akash Deep likely to debut in Ranchi Test in Jasprit Bumrah's absence - Report

England’s dream of continuing the unbeaten Test series run under skipper Ben Stokes is facing a serious challenge after the visitors were humbled by India on Sunday (Feb 18) in the Rajkot Test. Stokes, who has yet to show his all-round skills with the ball, is now likely to take matters into his own hands as he prepares for the do-or-die contest in Ranchi. According to England head coach Brendon McCullum, the English World Cup-winning all-rounder is fit and could bowl if he's legitimately able to during the remaining two Tests.

McCullum on Stokes bowling

"Well, it's good that he's actually getting into a state where he thinks he might bowl," McCullum said. "But Ben is clever; he's really clever as well. He won't bowl unless he thinks he's legitimately able to bowl. The problem would be if he starts getting into a spell and then he can't get out of the spell. So we'll see what unfolds. If he does get that bit between his teeth, then let's see where the danger lies there and try and pull him away from it. But it's a good sign."

Why England are missing Stokes’ bowling?

England have so far utilised only two speedsters during the series with Mark Wood and James Anderson shuffling the pack. However, the visitors have missed the services of Stokes with the ball whenever either of the bowlers are to be rested during the spell. In the opening two matches, England played with only one speedster before bringing in both Wood and Anderson for the Rajkot Test. So far in the series, Stokes has scored 180 runs in six innings and has averaged 30 overall in the series.

Stokes will next lead England in the Ranchi Test which starts on Friday (Feb 23) knowing a defeat would crush their dreams of winning a Test series on Indian soil. IND vs ENG: Ben Stokes likely to bowl in Ranchi, Dharamsala Tests as England face do-or-die situation

Former England captain Joe Root has faced huge backlash for his form in the ongoing Test series against India as he continues to struggle with bat. Root, one of the legends of English cricket, has seen a slump of form during the India tour where he has featured more with the ball than the bat. In his defence, former England player Mark Butcher has stated that the “bowling workload” has taken its toll on the player which has seen him struggle during the series.

Butcher defends Root

“I’ve thought that that thinking, going back in time to when people were talking about Joe Root being the lone spinner for England in more seam-friendly conditions and said that that was nonsense. I still think that having him having to do so much work as a frontline spin bowler is not likely to yield the sort of results that you’d expect from him with the bat," Butcher was quoted as saying by Wisden.

So far in the series, the 33-year-old has scored 77 runs in six innings while he has bowled 89 overs during the same period. He is averaging 14 with the bat and 43 with the ball, which has clearly indicated a lack of confidence in the batter. If things continue to be on the downhill, Root could face competition for his place in the squad with just two more matches to go in the series.

IND vs ENG: Former England cricketer highlights 'bowling workload' as key factor in Joe Root's poor form

India thrashed England by 434 runs on Day 4 of the third Test, in Rajkot, on Sunday (Feb 18). Batting first, India were tottering at 33-3 on the opening day before centuries from skipper Rohit Sharma (131) and Ravindra Jadeja (112) propelled India to 445. In reply, Ben Duckett's 153 stood out for England as they folded for 319 before India set a whopping 557-run target for the visitors, riding on Yashasvi Jaiswal's 214. Eventually, Jadeja's 5-fer enabled India's big win as England got dismissed for a paltry 122.

After India's thumping victory, their biggest Test win in terms of runs, veteran stumper Dinesh Karthik made a big claim. He feels the Rajkot Test is a statement win for captain Rohit, who has been under fire as a red-ball leader of late. Former England batter Kevin Pietersen had recently hit out at Hitman during the first Test in Hyderabad (which the hosts lost by 28 runs) for his relaxed on-field attitude and overall tactics.

"I would say that this is a statement victory for Rohit Sharma. They did not have Ashwin when they bowled in the first innings of the Test match. That is a big miss in India. In spite of that, he has made this Test match happen. There were few murmurs in the last two Tests that he had not led the team well and at times he let the game drift," Karthik said on Cricbuzz.

"He made a strong comeback in Vizag. In Rajkot Ben Duckett made it really hard for him in the first innings, but he still found a way to comeback. Now add the others, the Rahuls, the Kohlis, the Shamis, the Pantsl; Rohit has led this team very well and he has found answers to questions that Bazball raised in the first Test match in Vizag," he further added.

We have got class in our bowling, the message was to stay calm and I'm really proud of how we came back the next day. When those things happen, it's a delight."

India's win in Rajkot is being appreciated more because they were without Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul, both out of action due to injury concerns, whereas Virat Kohli has not taken part in the series yet due to personal reasons. Moreover, R Ashwin had to withdraw from the Test match after the end of second day's play, due to a family emergency. While he had returned to Rajkot on the fourth day, Jaiswal and Jadeja (ending with match figures of 7 for 92) ensured India did not require his services as they thumped England without dropping much sweat.

Ind vs Eng: Rajkot Test is a statement win for 'under-fire' Rohit Sharma, feels veteran stumper Dinesh Karthik

India thrashed England by a whopping 434-run margin on Day 4 of the third Test in Rajkot on Sunday (Feb 18). Despite reeling at 33-3 on the opening day, Rohit Sharma-led India showed a lot of character to bounce back and win the Test by a handsome margin. After the game, former Indian batter-turned-commentator Sanjay Manjrekar heaped praise on India's young batters who dominated the English bowlers in Rajkot.

Yashasvi Jaiswal led the charge amongst the young Indian batters with a fine 214 in the second innings (his second double ton of the series). Moreover, debutant Sarfaraz Khan slammed 62 and 68* whereas Dhruv Jurel, also playing his maiden Test, came good with a vital 46 in the first innings. Shubman Gill also stood tall with an impressive 91 in the second innings.

Many young batters stood tall for India after centuries from skipper Rohit (131) and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja (112) on Day 1 of the Test match. Thus, Manjrekar lauded India's young batters, who played with an attacking intent and were confident from the word go versus the English bowlers.

Manjrekar praised England's attacking batting approach but cautioned them for their ordinary bowling, which was taken to the cleaners by young Indian batters. He said on ESPNCricinfo, "I respect England's approach and they are doing the world of Test cricket a great good, not just the team. But the worry for them going into the next 2 Tests is the bowling attack. The big takeaway on Day 4 was how their bowling was massacred by young Indian batters with hardly any Test experience."

“The biggest problem England will face will be with their inexperienced spinners, who have done phenomenally well. But it’s just too much of a burden to carry for these young shoulders with hardly any first-class experience. I don't see them suddenly getting India 150 all-out and can't see India giving them rank turners that other opposition teams have got," he further opined.

England’s bowling was massacred by young Indian batters - Manjrekar’s big statement after Rajkot Test

England lost the third Test to India, in Rajkot, by a whopping 434-run margin. This became the second biggest defeat for England in Tests and they now trail the five-match series 2-1. After the third Test, former England captain-turned-commentator Nasser Hussain schooled Ben Stokes & Co. Hussain feels England should not considering tweaking their famous Bazball approach but need some reflection and improvement before heading into the final two Tests.

‘It’s time for introspection’

In his column for the Daily Mail, Hussain wrote, "Sure, England got away with it in the first Test when they conceded a huge 190-run lead and turned things around... But on the Subcontinent, matches like that are the exception, not the rule and if you get behind it's very hard to catch up...It's a time for introspection. It's a time for the basics - taking your catches, making big scores in the first innings."

"Bazball is not attack, attack, attack. Occasionally, you must absorb pressure and this was a time to do so, forcing Bumrah into a second spell, making Jadeja bowl more and more. An opportunity for England to make India really miss Ashwin," Hussain further stated.

Hussain added, "If England don't consider tweaks, Bazball just becomes a cult that can't be questioned...I am not asking them to alter their mantra, just to review the last couple of matches and ask themselves: how can we improve?"

After being asked to bowl first, England had India reeling at 33-3 on the opening day of the Rajkot Test before Indian captain Rohit Sharma's 131 and Ravindra Jadeja's 112 propelled the hosts to 445. In reply, Ben Duckett stood out with an impressive 153 but England only managed 319, conceding a vital 126-run lead. ‘It’s time for introspection’ In his column for the Daily Mail, Hussain wrote, "Sure, England got away with it in the first Test when they conceded a huge 190-run lead and turned things around... But on the Subcontinent, matches like that are the exception, not the rule and if you get behind it's very hard to catch up...It's a time for introspection. It's a time for the basics - taking your catches, making big scores in the first innings." "Bazball is not attack, attack, attack. Occasionally, you must absorb pressure and this was a time to do so, forcing Bumrah into a second spell, making Jadeja bowl more and more. An opportunity for England to make India really miss Ashwin," Hussain further stated. Also read: Ind vs Eng: Rajkot Test is a statement win for 'under-fire' Rohit Sharma, feels veteran stumper Dinesh Karthik Hussain added, "If England don't consider tweaks, Bazball just becomes a cult that can't be questioned...I am not asking them to alter their mantra, just to review the last couple of matches and ask themselves: how can we improve?" After being asked to bowl first, England had India reeling at 33-3 on the opening day of the Rajkot Test before Indian captain Rohit Sharma's 131 and Ravindra Jadeja's 112 propelled the hosts to 445. In reply, Ben Duckett stood out with an impressive 153 but England only managed 319, conceding a vital 126-run lead. England faced a poor Day 3 in the ongoing Rajkot Test against India after the visitors were made to pay for silly mistakes with both bat and ball on Saturday (Feb 17). Former England captain Alastair Cook did not sit back in criticising his side as they went from 207/2 to 319 all out. According to Cook, England won’t win many matches if they face a collapse of that order. At Stumps on Day 3, India had a lead of 322 runs and still have eight wickets in hand. Is it an opportunity lost? England have been poor with the bat - they've lost eight wickets for 116 today and you don't win many matches when you collapse like that in the first innings,” Cook said while speaking to Sky Sports. "To win Test matches you have to be good for such long periods of time. India were poor yesterday but they've been very, very good today,” the former skipper added. England starting the day at 207/2 lost Ben Duckett (153) early in the first session while Root (18) and Jonny Bairstow (0) also departed cheap. India entered Day 3 with no Ashwin as the spinner withdrew from the match due to personal reasons. India lost Rohit Sharma early when he was dismissed for 19 as the hosts made a poor start to their innings. Rohit was leg-before on 19 as Joe Root got the better of him in the 12th over.

However, the batter then decided to withdraw and retired hurt on 104 and returned to the pavilion after the conclusion of the 44th over. The back issue adds more woes to Team India as they are already without Ravichandran Ashwin who had withdrawn from the remaining Test match on Friday due to personal issues.

The Men in Blue bowled out the visitors for 253 runs. India then added 255 more runs to their big lead and set a target of 399 runs. Although Zak Crawley once again shone with the bat, he didn't receive much assistance from his teammates. England ultimately fell 106 runs short of the required total and were bundled out on Day 4.
England look set to make wholesome changes to their squad for the third Test match against India. Mark Wood is likely to be included in the playing XI again after being a part of the opening Test against India in Hyderabad. Skipper Ben Stokes has hinted that the team is looking to field two pacers in the Rajkot Test starting on Thursday (Feb 15) at the Niranjan Shah Stadium. This equation could result in Vizag debutant Shoaib Bashir missing out on a place.

England set to recall Mark Wood

"The reasons why we would look at Jimmy and Woody would be I just like to have a point of difference. And India is never a three-seamer option," captain Ben Stokes said in a pre-match conference.

"Obviously having Woody's high pace, and if we were to go with two seamers again, it would give a bit more rest to Woody as he was that sole seamer in the first Test. So managing his workload. If we were to go with two seamers, we might be able to get a bit more versatility and use Woody how we want to use him out here and not worry he's the only seamer."

Although England have trimmed their options to 12, they will only announce the Playing XI on Wednesday after final inspection of the pitch. It is also expected that Rehan Ahmed will be in the Playing XI despite encountering visa troubles upon arriving on Monday. Ahmed, who with the rest of the England squad was in Abu Dhabi during off days, only had a single entry visa.

"I don't mean to say anything disrespectful to the question. IND vs ENG: We shouldn’t label that as positive or negative - Ben Stokes on Virat Kohli’s absence

Ahead of the third Test versus England, in Rajkot, Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja feels Ben Stokes & Co. are not 'one of the most difficult teams'. England have given a good account of themselves in the opening two Tests versus hosts India. They won the series opener, in Hyderabad, by 28 runs despite conceding a whopping 190-run lead and gave a tough fight in their chase of 399 in the second Test in Visakhapatnam before losing by 106 runs. The series is currently levelled at 1-1 with the final three Tests expected to be close affairs.

In a pre-match presser, Jadeja spoke at length on England and said had India not committed 'small mistakes' in the Hyderabad Test, the scoreline could have been 2-0 in hosts' favour. "I won’t term England as one of the most difficult teams. It hasn't been easy for other teams to come to India and play. If it wasn't for small mistakes in second innings of first Test, we wouldn't have lost."

Jadeja will be the local boy in the upcoming Rajkot Test. His experience will come in handy for India. Speaking about the pitch and conditions, the veteran all-rounder said, "Here the wicket is flat and hard, but it depends on what they have prepared. Sometimes you get 37 wickets in three matches (days), but this wicket looks good." He added, "The wicket behaves differently in every game. Sometimes it stays flat, sometimes it turns, sometimes it plays well for two days and then turns. I believe it will play well first and then slowly it will break and the ball will turn."

England have already announced their playing XI for the Rajkot Test, with Mark Wood returning in place of Shoaib Bashir. Meanwhile, India will be without the injured duo of Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul whereas Virat Kohli remains out of action as well, citing personal reasons, thus, the home side have a task in hand to remain ahead in the five-match series.

IND vs ENG 3rd Test: Check weather and pitch report from Rajkot ahead of Thursday's match

England have announced their playing XI for the third Test versus India which gets underway in Rajkot on Thursday (Feb 15). Mark Wood has been recalled in the playing XI whereas Shoaib Bashir has been left out. Wood was part of England's 28-run win in the first Test in Hyderabad, however, England went ahead with James Anderson as the only pacer in the second Test in Visakhapatnam, which the visitors lost by 106 runs. For the third Test, England will field two seamers in Wood and Anderson whereas their spin department will comprise Tom Hartley, Rehan Ahmed and Joe Root.

England captain Ben Stokes will also be playing his 100th Test when his side takes on Rohit Sharma-led India in the Rajkot Test. Thus, he will be eager to make a mark with his all-round skills and captaincy decisions. The visitors have backed their batting unit -- with Ollie Pope and Zak Crawley being their top performers so far -- but will need more from the likes of Stokes, Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow. On the other hand, all eyes will be on their spin trio of Hartley (who accounted for 7 for 62 in the final innings in Hyderabad), Rehan Ahmed (who recently dealt with visa issues while re-entering India) and Root.
