Earlier, England skipper Jos Buttler won the toss and elected to bat first. The decision proved right as the openers added 50 runs in just the first six overs. Salt and Duckett were looking good after adding 75 runs for the first wicket before three wickets fell for two runs in nine balls, derailing the innings.
Joe Root and Jos Buttler tried to steady the innings, but Ravindra Jadeja trapped Root LBW shortly after England went past the 100-run mark. Buttler then was joined by Jacob Bethell, and the pair added 59 runs for the fifth wicket before Axar Patel dismissed Buttler for 52—the highest individual score for England.
Liam Livingstone was next to go as Rana took his third wicket, putting England on the backfoot as the last 15 overs approached them. Mohammed Shami, playing his first ODI since the 2023 ODI World Cup final, then clean-bowled Brydon Carse soon after England breached the 200-run mark.
Jadeja returned to attack and removed Bethell, who scored a fine 51—his second ODI fifty. Jofra Archer then played some good shots and scored 21 not out off 18 balls, including three fours and a six. England were eventually bowled out for 248 in 47.4 overs.
Apart from Harshit, Jadeja also took three wickets but gave away just 26 runs in nine overs against Rana's 53 in seven.

Most recently, Rohit played for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy but failed there as well, scoring just three and 28 runs in two innings during the match against Jammu and Kashmir last month. It was Rohit's first Ranji Trophy match in about a decade.
Before that, the Indian skipper failed miserably in a Test tour of Australia. He had missed the first Test due to the birth of his second child and played the next three matches. Rohit could manage only 30 runs in six innings before sitting himself out of the final Test in Sydney.
Virat Kohli also didn't live up to expectations on the Australia tour and scored only 190 runs. He hit a ton in the first innings of the first Test in Perth but managed just 90 runs after that on the rest of the tour.
The India star was also part of Delhi's Ranji Trophy match against Railways but managed just six runs before being bowled through the gates. It was Kohli's first Ranji Trophy match since 2012.

India's mystery spinner Varun Chakaravarthy has joined the India squad in Nagpur - venue of the first of three ODIs against England scheduled to be played on February 6. Varun was not part of the original squad which had Kuldeep Yadav as the only specialist spinner apart from three spin all-rounders in Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar.
Varun joining the squad comes on the back of his Player of the Series performance in recently-concluded five T20Is against England. He ended up taking 14 wickets in the series - the most among both sides.

His inclusion comes after coach Gautam Gambhir's insistence. Notably, Chakaravarthy also plays IPL for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) - a side Gambhir mentored to title in last season before becoming India coach. During that season, Chakravarthy had taken 21 wickets.
"Gambhir insisted on adding Varun Chakravarthy to India squad for England series," sources close to the development told WION.
"The Men’s Selection Committee has added Varun Chakaravarthy to India’s squad for the upcoming 3-match ODI series against England," read the official release from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Recently, retired offie Ravi Ashwin also backed Chakaravarthy for making it to India's Champions Trophy squad as well.
"We are all talking about whether he should have been there (Champions Trophy squad), I am thinking there is a chance he might be there. I have a feeling he might make it. There is a chance because all teams have named only a provisional squad. So, he might get picked," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

England skipper Jos Buttler took another dig at India all-rounder Shivam Dube after losing the five T20I series 4-1. Post India vs England 5th T20I in Mumbai, Buttler made a rather sarcastic remark about Dube and also posed a question on India's medical staff.
“He’s pulled up pretty well from a nasty blow on the head, hopefully he’s OK,” Buttler said.
“I’m sure he must have been happy with the risk he took or their medical staff were. Maybe a question for them,” he added.

What is all the drama?

Buttler's remarks after the final T20I were in reference to the hit Dube had encountered in the fourth T20I after which he was replaced by Harshit Rana as concussion sub. The England skipper questioned Rana as Dube's replacement and called out the match referee for the same.

Dube, who had scored a crucial fifty in the 4th T20I, also managed a quick-fire 30 in the 5th match. India posted 247 in Mumbai and won the match by 147 runs - their second-biggest win in T20Is.
The England skipper, however, was adamant about their style of playing and insisted that they'd continue with it.
“We certainly won’t change the way we want to play, we need to keep backing that, be even more committed and be desperate to do well and execute that,” Buttler added.
“If we’re going to fall, I’d rather fall on the proactive side. Hopefully, over time you get more comfortable with that and play better.”
England managed just one win in five T20I games with that attitude. The downfall of the English side is alarming, especially as they won the T20 World Cup in 2022.

Samson managed just 51 runs in the series with a highest of 26 while SKY could score only 28 runs in five games with a best of 14. India, however, won the series 4-1.

"Same ball, same field, same shot, same mistake, same dismissal. I can understand it happening in one or two games, but this is surprising," Ashwin on his YouTube channel.
"When you know a tactic is being used against you, it becomes your responsibility to find a new answer. It is very surprising from both players," said the recently retired offie.

Samson, who has become a regular fixture at the top post the World Cup win in 2024, has played 17 matches since Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's retirement from T20Is and scored 487 runs at a strike rate of 171.
While the wicketkeeper-batter has been able to score one fifty and three hundreds in those games including two consecutive ones, he has failed to enter double digit figure in seven of those matches with four ducks as well.
SKY, on the other hand, has failed even more - scoring just 261 runs at a strike rate of 160 with two fifties in 16 matches since the T20 World Cup victory. The India skipper last scored a 25+ runs in an innings in October 2024 against Bangladesh in October 2024.

IND vs ENG, 4th T20I live streaming: When and where to watch India vs England live on laptop, TV

England legend Kevin Pietersen has backed Sanju Samson to flourish despite his failure in the latest T20I against the visitors on Tuesday (Jan 29). According to Pietersen, the wicketkeeper-batter has nothing to worry about and has the mentality to succeed in the format. England beat India by 26 runs in the third T20I on Tuesday and they now trail India 1-2 in the five-match series.

Pietersen backs Samson

“I think mentally he's sound. I really like Sanju Samson as a batter. I actually love him. I was pretty surprised that he hasn't had more of a consistent role over the last few years. Yes, he's got a game here at the top of the order, but listen, these things happen. Things happen so quickly in the shortest form of the game,” Pietersen told the broadcasters after the match.
India were beaten in the Rajkot T20I having won earlier in Kolkata and Chennai as Samson endured form. The Rajasthan Royals captain has been in great form recently, having scored two centuries in the South Africa tour, but failed to replicate the same on Tuesday. The 30-year-old was dismissed for three and with question marks on his batting technique.

England dominate India in Rajkot

While Samson’s form has been the talking point, England kept their hopes of winning the series alive with a dominating win. Having scored 171/9 in 20 overs, England restricted India to 145 and trimmed the hosts' lead in the series. Ben Duckett was the top scorer for England with 51 runs off 28 while Liam Livingstone also contributed with 43.
India on the other hand struggled with batting and were 85/5 at one stage before the mini-revival. Hardik Pandya top scored with 40, but lack of support at the other end saw the Men in Blue end on a losing note.
The two sides next meet on Friday (Jan 31) in Pune as India will have another opportunity to pocket the series while England could take the series to the decider if they end up on the winning side.

Sports, Cricket: According to Kevin Pietersen, Sanju Samson has nothing to worry about and has the mentality to succeed in the T20I format for India.

Pietersen backs Samson “I think mentally he's sound.

IND vs ENG: Tilak Varma leads from front as India beat England in Chennai T20I; take 2-0 lead in series

Team India could have a major scare as they prepare for the second T20I against England on Saturday (Jan 25) with Abhishek Sharma reportedly injured in training. According to media reports, Abhishek did not bat in training due to an injury he sustained on Friday after twisting his ankle. Abhishek is India’s first-choice opener alongside Sanju Samson and is highly unlikely to play in the Chennai T20I.

Abhishek doubtful for Chennai T20I

According to a report from Cricbuzz, Abhishek twisted his ankle in training, making him unavailable for batting on the eve of the Chennai T20I. In case he is unable to recover, the Indian team management will have to search for a replacement as they look to extend their lead in the series. India won the opening T20I by seven wickets, where Abhishek scored 79 runs and was the architect-in-chief with the bat.
Sanju Samson scored 26 off 20 before Tilak Varma (19) and Hardik Pandya (3) completed the formalities.
At the time of writing, the team management had yet to comment on the situation, meaning Abhishek is not officially ruled out of the Chennai contest.

Cricket Sports: The visitors made only one change in their side after suffering a seven-wicket defeat in the series opener. Jamie Smith has also been added to the squad

Pacer Brydon Carse will replace Gus Atkinson in England's playing XI for the second T20I against India at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Saturday (Jan 25). The visitors made only one change in their side after suffering a crushing seven-wicket defeat in the series opener in Kolkata on Wednesday. Wicketkeeper Jamie Smith has also been added to the 12-player squad, England Cricket informed on X. In the first T20I, Atkinson had a miserable day in the middle as he conceded a staggering 38 runs in his two overs. He didn't finish his full quota of four overs as Abhishek Sharma's 34-ball 79 sealed the victory for India with 43 balls to spare. After the loss, England captain Jos Buttler said they will assess conditions for the upcoming games of the series. "There was a little in the wicket early on, didn't expect that, but if you came through that phase it was a good pitch and a fast-scoring ground. Some really good players in there, we'll be better for the run-out. Jof looked good, superstar, looked threatening, Mark Wood bowled fast, exciting. We want to be aggressive and watchable, but venue to venue got to assess conditions. Enjoyment of the game is always there, I'm enjoying the environment. I'm a big McCullum fan, always have been. Enjoying working with him," Buttler said in the post-match interaction.
