<p>The delimitation would take nearly four months. This means that general elections in Pakistan cannot be held within 90 days of the dissolution of the provincial and national assemblies.</p>

Pakistan: Imran Khan's PTI to challenge delimitation decision in Supreme Court

<p>The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has released a new promotional video for the upcoming ODI World Cup in India after they faced severe criticism on social media for excluding former skipper Imran Khan. The PCB on Thursday, August 17 released a new promotional video, contrary to the August 14 video, using former Prime Minister and World Cup-winning captain Imran Khan’s visuals. The PCB had earlier avoided using Imran’s visuals in the video published on Independence Day, due to the ongoing political turmoil in the nation.</p>

PCB releases new promotional video featuring Imran Khan after social media backlash

The Pakistan cricket board has been forced to republish a promotional video highlighting the country's key achievements in the sport as the initial video released on Pakistan's Independence Day didn't have a single visual of Imran Khan. The former Captain Waseem Akram led the backlash against the PCB for airbrushing the former prime minister but also Pakistan's greatest cricketer out of the earlier video three days after uploading the original clip on the microblogging site X formerly known as Twitter. The PCB has put out an updated version which they call the complete version the PCB attempted to do damage control by claiming some important Clips had been omitted due to time constraints.

Pakistan cricket board includes Imran Khan in a new tribute video

The Pakistan cricket board is facing flak for omitting Imran Khan from a tribute video. Was the omission deliberate?

<p>Former Pakistan speedster Wasim Akram slammed the national board on Wednesday, August 16 over a controversial video published on the occasion of Independence Day of the country. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) released a video highlighting the achievements of the nation in cricket, but much to the surprise avoided using Imran Khan’s visuals. Akram took strict note of the video and demanded an apology on the matter after Imran’s visuals were avoided being used.</p>

Pakistan former PM Imran Khan’s nephew arrested

The latest setback for former prime minister Imran Khan his nephew Hassan Niazi has been arrested from the country's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. But according to sources, he is an active member of Pakistan's Tehreek-e-Insaaf and is a lawyer who was picked up from his house after several days of hoarding.

Trouble mounts for Ex-Pakistan PM Imran Khan

<p>The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) shared a video on Pakistan cricket on the country's 76th Independence Day on Monday (August 14).&nbsp;The two-minute 21-second clip traced back to Pakistan's international cricket debut in 1952 and captured some of their biggest moments, such as the&nbsp;historic ODI World Cup triumph in 1992 till the 2022 T20 World Cup where Babar Azam-led Men in Green reached the final.</p>

<p>However, the video has not been well-received by the Pakistan cricket fans. The short clip is facing a severe backlash as it did not involve Imran Khan, the national captain and former prime minister who led Pakistan to their first-ever mega title during the 1992 ODI World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.</p>

<p>The caption of the video reads, "Making history isn't just about one day; it's about the legends we create and the tales we script. Pakistan Cricket Team – a legacy that echoes through time."</p>

<p>The viral clip comprised some big names from Pakistan cricket such as Javed Miandad, Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, Waqar Younis, Shahid Afridi, and Babar.</p>

<p>It displayed some of their glorious moments in 1992 win, the 2009 T20 World Cup victory and&nbsp;2017 Champions Trophy win, where they trounced India in the summit clash. However, Imran -- a veteran of 88 Tests and 175 ODIs -- was nowhere to be found.&nbsp;</p>

However, the video has not been well-received by the Pakistan cricket fans. The short clip is facing a severe backlash as it did not involve Imran Khan, the national captain and former prime minister who led Pakistan to their first-ever mega title during the 1992 ODI World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. The caption of the video reads, "Making history isn't just about one day; it's about the legends we create and the tales we script. Pakistan Cricket Team – a legacy that echoes through time." The viral clip comprised some big names from Pakistan cricket such as Javed Miandad, Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, Waqar Younis, Shahid Afridi, and Babar. It displayed some of their glorious moments in 1992 win, the 2009 T20 World Cup victory and 2017 Champions Trophy win, where they trounced India in the summit clash. However, Imran -- a veteran of 88 Tests and 175 ODIs -- was nowhere to be found. <p>The US government put pressure on Pakistan to remove Imran Khan when he was the prime minister over his neutrality towards the Russia-Ukraine war, ‘The Intercept’ reported on Wednesday (Aug 9), citing a secret diplomatic cable obtained from a Pakistani military source.</p>

<p>The diplomatic cable cites a meeting between the US State Department officials and Pakistan’s ambassador to the US on March 7, 2022, where Khan’s stance on the Russian invasion was discussed.</p>

Diplomatic cables reveal US pressured Pakistan to remove Imran Khan

Here, we bring you the news that is trending across WION's social media platforms - Diplomatic cables reveal US pressured Pakistan to remove Imran Khan, What is direct-to-mobile technology?, Pakistan man cleans world's second tallest peak to pay tribute to his father, Why is South Korean government arranging blind dates?

US pressured Pakistan to remove Imran Khan | What is direct-to-mobile technology?

<p>After Imran Khan's arrest and subsequent political ban, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party finds itself at a critical juncture. Its future hinges on capitalising on its core strengths even without Imran Khan's immediate presence.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As the nation navigates uncertain waters, the dynamics between parties will significantly shape Pakistan's political trajectory.</p>

<p>Michael Kugelman, Director of the South Asia Institute at the Wilson Center in Washington&nbsp;offered&nbsp;WION an insightful analysis of the potential scenarios and implications for PTI's future, the party's internal dynamics, and the broader political landscape in Pakistan.</p>

<p>According to Kugelman, PTI faces a formidable challenge following Imran Khan's removal from the political scene.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"PTI is in a tough spot. The entire party has been hollowed out, and with Khan out of the picture it's essentially anchorless for the time being," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, Kugelman pointed&nbsp;out that PTI still enjoys advantages such as "public support and anti-incumbency sentiment". "If it's given enough space to operate in, it still has a chance of making electoral gains."</p>

<h2><strong>Hinging on military relations</strong></h2>

<p>The expert noted that the party without Imran Khan could make electoral gains "if its remaining leadership is able to improve ties with the military."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Its current leader, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, has a good record of relations with the army. So unless PTI is banned, it has a chance to stay relevant. PTI will likely play the long game as well: Try to hold things together and maintain morale at the top and among the support base, and plan for Khan's eventual release from prison."&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Anti-establishment sentiment in voters&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Kugelman underscored the fact that PTI's strength is intrinsically tied to Imran Khan's persona.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Even if PTI is weakened, it will remain a challenge for the state, and especially the army. PTI's large and growing support base is angry and harbors anti-establishment sentiment, and yet there's no outlet to channel that sentiment. It won't vote for the PDM parties or for a new party with former PTI leaders. It wants Khan."</p>

<p>Khan's absence, the expert said&nbsp;poses an "existential loss for the party." "Let's be clear, PTI revolves around Khan and Khan revolves around PTI. He is the party, and the party is him."</p>

<h2><strong>So what PTI will look like post-Imran Khan?&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Kugelman suggested that PTI should be able to survive. "Shah Mehmood Qureshi is someone with experience as a politician and diplomat, and he gets along well with the military. The PTI support base will respect the fact that he refused to cave to the establishment's pressure, as many PTI leaders did, and he stayed with the party. So in theory, Qureshi can be a stabilizing force, or at least a bridge meant to hold down the fort until Khan returns--if he does return."&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Broader political dynamics in Pakistan&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Kugelman offered a nuanced perspective on the broader political landscape in Pakistan.&nbsp; He envisions a form of "status quo politics emerging from this crisis."&nbsp;</p>

<p>While PTI's anti-establishment sentiment has put the military on the defensive, thanks to the "Khan effect", Kugelman does not foresee a fundamental change in the hybrid arrangement where civilian and military leaders shared power.</p>

<p>"We have seen two successive administrations embrace a hybrid regime... and I don't see that changing. A hybrid regime 3.0 could be coming soon."&nbsp;</p>

<p>He further pointed out that the ongoing tensions between the PML-N and PPP parties suggest that a clear ruling coalition might not emerge from the next election.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"One area to watch is the PDM parties: The PML-N and PPP are at odds on several issues, including the election date. This suggests they may not agree to serve in another ruling coalition together. The election likely will not result in a clear majority, and a weak coalition is a strong possibility."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The expert said that a weak coalition would play to the military's advantage as it is "easier to exploit", enabling them to exert more influence.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"That's a movie we've seen before."&nbsp;</p>

After Imran Khan's arrest and subsequent political ban, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party finds itself at a critical juncture. Its future hinges on capitalising on its core strengths even without Imran Khan's immediate presence. As the nation navigates uncertain waters, the dynamics between parties will significantly shape Pakistan's political trajectory. Michael Kugelman, Director of the South Asia Institute at the Wilson Center in Washington offered WION an insightful analysis of the potential scenarios and implications for PTI's future, the party's internal dynamics, and the broader political landscape in Pakistan. According to Kugelman, PTI faces a formidable challenge following Imran Khan's removal from the political scene. "PTI is in a tough spot. The entire party has been hollowed out, and with Khan out of the picture it's essentially anchorless for the time being," he said. However, Kugelman pointed out that PTI still enjoys advantages such as "public support and anti-incumbency sentiment". "If it's given enough space to operate in, it still has a chance of making electoral gains." Hinging on military relations The expert noted that the party without Imran Khan could make electoral gains "if its remaining leadership is able to improve ties with the military." "Its current leader, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, has a good record of relations with the army. So unless PTI is banned, it has a chance to stay relevant. PTI will likely play the long game as well: Try to hold things together and maintain morale at the top and among the support base, and plan for Khan's eventual release from prison." Anti-establishment sentiment in voters Kugelman underscored the fact that PTI's strength is intrinsically tied to Imran Khan's persona. "Even if PTI is weakened, it will remain a challenge for the state, and especially the army. PTI's large and growing support base is angry and harbors anti-establishment sentiment, and yet there's no outlet to channel that sentiment. It won't vote for the PDM parties or for a new party with former PTI leaders. It wants Khan." Khan's absence, the expert said poses an "existential loss for the party." "Let's be clear, PTI revolves around Khan and Khan revolves around PTI. He is the party, and the party is him." So what PTI will look like post-Imran Khan? Kugelman suggested that PTI should be able to survive. "Shah Mehmood Qureshi is someone with experience as a politician and diplomat, and he gets along well with the military. The PTI support base will respect the fact that he refused to cave to the establishment's pressure, as many PTI leaders did, and he stayed with the party. So in theory, Qureshi can be a stabilizing force, or at least a bridge meant to hold down the fort until Khan returns--if he does return." Broader political dynamics in Pakistan Kugelman offered a nuanced perspective on the broader political landscape in Pakistan. He envisions a form of "status quo politics emerging from this crisis." While PTI's anti-establishment sentiment has put the military on the defensive, thanks to the "Khan effect", Kugelman does not foresee a fundamental change in the hybrid arrangement where civilian and military leaders shared power. "We have seen two successive administrations embrace a hybrid regime... and I don't see that changing. A hybrid regime 3.0 could be coming soon." He further pointed out that the ongoing tensions between the PML-N and PPP parties suggest that a clear ruling coalition might not emerge from the next election. "One area to watch is the PDM parties: The PML-N and PPP are at odds on several issues, including the election date. This suggests they may not agree to serve in another ruling coalition together. The election likely will not result in a clear majority, and a weak coalition is a strong possibility." The expert said that a weak coalition would play to the military's advantage as it is "easier to exploit", enabling them to exert more influence. "That's a movie we've seen before." Endgame for Imran Khan as Pakistan's election commission bars him from politics till 2028

<p>Pakistani government officials at the Attock Jail have decided to conduct a security audit of all the employees after it was found that an alleged "coded conversation" took place between a jail official and former prime minister Imran Khan.</p>

<p>The&nbsp;Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief has been lodged in the historic Attock jail ever since he was convicted by the Islamabad trial court in the Toshakhana case.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to Pakistani media reports, the jail administration was not able to decipher some of the conversations between the staffer and Khan while going through the recordings. Consequently, the biodata of over 150 prison staff has been recalled&nbsp;to be sent to the Special Branch and other institutions for security clearance.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The historical&nbsp;Attock Jail, built in 1906, has previously witnessed several Pakistani political bigwigs being lodged on its premises. Being an ancient facility, the jail can only house 1,000 prisoners, with 700 currently residing inside the boundaries.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, owing to Khan's high-profile status and the security risks associated, the jail authorities are planning&nbsp;to transfer more than 100 prisoners from the jail to Adiala and other jails.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Khan's party has approached the&nbsp;Islamabad High Court seeking his transfer to Adiala and A-Class facilities.</p>

<h2><strong>Imran Khan's message</strong></h2>

<p>After the arrest, a pre-recorded video of Khan was released by his party wherein he urged his supporters to not stop protesting.</p>

<p>“My Pakistanis, by the time this message reaches you, I will be arrested and put in jail. My only appeal to you is not to sit quietly at home. The struggle that I am going through, it is not for myself, it is for you. This struggle is for your generations. If you don't stand up for your rights, (but) live the life of a slave...Mind you, slaves have no life of their own. Slaves are like ants on land.
