The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Imran Khan's appeal to challenge the National Accountability Ordinance (NAO), 1999 changes was accepted by the Supreme Court (SC), which also revoked them on Friday. The reserved judgement was released by a three-judge panel led by Chief Justice Bandial and including Justices Ijazul Ahsan and Syed Mansoor Ali Shah. The Islamabad High Court is set to announce its verdict on Tuesday on former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan's plea seeking the suspension of his three-year jail term in the Toshakhana corruption case.

High Court suspends Imran Khan's conviction in Toshakhana Case

After Pakistan's jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan's sentence was suspended on Tuesday (August 29) in the Toshakhana case, Shehbaz Sharif reacted on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

After the verdict was announced post-hearing on the case, the former premier lashed out at the Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP), Umar Ata Bandial saying that he tried saving the "blue-eyed boy" or "Ladley" Imran Khan.

However, he also said that the verdict is not final as the sentence is only "suspended, not terminated".

In a post on X, Sharif wrote, "Chief Justice's message of 'Good to see you' and 'Wishing you good luck' reached Islamabad High Court. Before the decision comes, everyone knows what the decision will be, so it should be a momentary concern for the justice system. If a clear message is received from the higher judiciary, then what else should the subordinate court do?" (English translation of his post on X read)

He further criticised the verdict saying that "the role of justice system will be written in the dark chapter of history".

Shehbaz Sharif also condemned its alleged biases in favour of Imran Khan by drawing parallels with rulings in the Nawaz Sharif case. "A monitoring judge was appointed to ensure the punishment of Nawaz Sharif, the Chief Justice himself became a monitoring judge to save Ladley," he wrote in his post on X, adding, "Scales tilted to one side and a justice system that undermines justice are not acceptable."

Session judge report reveals Pakistan ex-PM Imran Khan’s jail conditions

Pakistan: President Arif Alvi denies signing of key laws

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) arrested Shah Mahmood Qureshi from his home in the federal capital in the cypher leak case under the Official Secrets Act of 1923 minutes after he unambiguously stated in a news conference on Saturday that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founding Chairman Imran Khan was irreplaceable and that the party was united under his vision.

Pakistan's former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi was arrested on Saturday. Since May 9, this is the third time that Qureshi has been arrested by Pakistani authorities.
Shah Mehmood Qureshi is described as a close aide to cricketer-turned-politician who himself remains arrested since earlier this month after a court convicted him in the Toshakhana case related to illegal selling of state gifts during his prime ministerial tenure.

What is Shah Mehmood Qureshi accused of?

According to the FIR, on March 7, 2022, the then-foreign secretary received a cipher dispatched from Washington. Imran's close aide and Pak's former finance minister, Asad Umar, arrested under Official Secrets Act

Pakistan’s former prime minister Imran Khan was booked under the Official Secrets Act 1923 for allegedly leaking the details of a confidential diplomatic cable from the country's embassy in the US.

The 70-year-old, who is currently serving a three-year jail term in a corruption case, was booked under Section 5 of the recently amended act following a first information report (FIR) registered by the counterterrorism wing of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), The News reported quoting sources.

The FIA filed the case after finding his deliberate involvement in misusing the cipher (a classified diplomatic document), the report said

It is said that the case was filed a few days ago, but the authorities have declined to share a copy of the FIR.

More trouble for Imran Khan

Offences under Section 5, if proved in a court of law, involve punishment of imprisonment from two to 14 years, and in some cases even a death sentence.

Khan, in the days before he was ousted due to no-confidence motion, had cited the cipher to allege US’ involvement in toppling his government.

He had brandished the cipher at a public rally to back his claims. The US has time and again denied such allegations, terming them “categorically false”.

Dawn newspaper later reported that former principal secretary Azam Khan handed over the cipher to the PTI chief, who later told him that he had misplaced it and did not return it despite repeated requests.
