Ousted Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan's Pakistan-Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) replaced Khan as party head and appointed a barrister named Gohar Khan as the party chief on Saturday (Dec 2).

Imran Khan, who remains in prison since August 2023 after conviction in a corruption case, claims that the charges against him have been strategically crafted to prevent him from participating in the upcoming elections. In Pakistan, the military-intelligence nexus, dubbed as establishment, continues to remain the real power behind the semblance of democracy that emerges from Islamabad's Prime Minister's Office.

Khan has suggested that the 'establishment' ousted him at Washington's direction in April 2022, and subsequently ensured his imprisonment in the coming months.

PTI lets go founder Imran Khan as party captain to save 'bat' for elections

A Pakistani court has ordered the open trial of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan inside the jail premises, which will be open to the media and public.

The special court in Islamabad said that Khan’s trial on charges of leaking state secrets will start afresh on Friday, his lawyer said, according to Reuters news agency.

The court’s order was in response to the documents submitted by the government which sought the trial inside the jail premises citing threats to his life.

<h2>Court takes note of threat to Khan's life</h2>

"Threat assessments, particularly in the present case, where one of the accused is a former prime minister cannot be disregarded lightly by this court,” the order stated on Tuesday (Nov 28).

The open trial will be held at Adiala Jail premises, about 34 km (21 miles) from the capital Islamabad, where Khan has been jailed since the end of September.

Judge Abual Hasnat Zulqarnain said that five family members of Khan, and former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi who is also an accused in the case, will be allowed to attend the proceedings along with the public and media.

The trial of the state secret case, also called the cypher case, was being held in jail but the Islamabad High Court last week declared it illegal.

<h2>Case pertains to leaking of state secrets&nbsp;</h2>

The case pertains to a diplomatic cable – or cypher – sent to Islamabad by a former Pakistani ambassador to the United States, which substantiates Khan’s claims that his removal from office last year was orchestrated by his political opponents and the Pakistani military in collusion with the US.

The US and Pakistani authorities reject the charge.

The 71-year-old cricketer-turned-politician has been embroiled in political and legal battles since he was ousted as prime minister in April 2022. He was jailed for three years in August for unlawfully selling state gifts while in office from 2018 to 2022.

After the graft conviction, the country’s poll body later imposed a five-year ban on Khan contesting elections.

Khan, however, denies any wrongdoing and has said all the charges against him, including the graft case and the leak of the cable, were manufactured at the behest of the military to prevent him from participating in the Feb 8 general election.

In a significant turn of events, Khawar Farid Maneka, the ex-husband of Pakistan's former prime minister Imran Khan's wife, Bushra Bibi, filed a case on Saturday (Nov 25), accusing the former first couple of fornication and fraudulent marriage.

The complaint was submitted in the court of Islamabad East Senior Civil Judge Qudratullah, citing sections 34, 496, and 496-B of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Khawar Maneka, recently granted bail in a graft case, reiterated in his statement under section 200 of the Code of Criminal Procedure that Imran Khan was responsible for ruining his married life.

The court issued notices to three witnesses mentioned in the case, including Istekham-i-Pakistan Party member Awn Chaudhry, Mufti Muhammad Saeed who officiated the nikah, and Maneka's house employee Latif. They are directed to appear before the court on November 28, as reported by PTI.

He also claimed that Khan would call Bushra Bibi at late hours, with separate contact numbers and mobile phones provided for communication.

Maneka stated that he divorced Bushra Bibi on November 14, 2017. According to him, the alleged offense of fornication occurred between Imran and Bushra, followed by a staged marriage on January 1, 2018.

The legal development occurred after strong criticism from Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party leaders, questioning the moral necessity of Maneka's interview. Meanwhile, PML-N adversaries seized the opportunity to criticise the former premier.

Morning news brief: Israel-Hamas war latest, Uttarakhand tunnel rescue op, and more

Imran Khan, Pakistan's only Cricket World Cup-winning captain-turned-ousted prime minister, may lose the bat as the electoral symbol of his Pakistan-Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) political party. The development comes after the Election Commission of Pakistan on Thursday (Nov 23) warned PTI to hold intra-party polls within three weeks or it will lose its electoral symbol.&nbsp;

But since Imran Khan's supporters pulled off a 'mini-intifada' in May against Pakistan's powerful military, a number of high-profile exits from the PTI have rocked the boat of populism Khan was sailing in.

Since August 2023, Khan has been in custody following a conviction in a corruption case, among dozens of cases lodged against him since he was ousted from power after a parliamentary no-trust vote in April 2022.&nbsp;

<h2>Imran Khan's potential loss of Bat: What does it mean?</h2>

Pakistan has one of the lowest literacy rates in South Asia, with some of Imran Khan's strongholds in the predominantly tribal Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province particularly backwards in terms of Human Development Indicators. Voters in these tribal areas identify Khan's party primarily with its bat symbol. Given Khan's acclaimed record as one of the finest cricketers Pakistan has ever produced, his party is identified with the Cricket Bat across Pakistan.&nbsp;

In fact, 'Ballay pe thappa' (Stamp on the Bat) was the defining rallying call for Khan's supporters in 2018 when the PTI chief, then backed by Pakistan's army-intelligence complex, managed to put together a coalition to be in Islamabad's Prime Minister's Office.&nbsp;

The loss of the bat may very well translate into a loss of identity for embattled Khan's Pakistan-Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).&nbsp;

<h2>How exactly can PTI lose its Bat symbol?</h2>

On August 3, 2023, just two days before Khan was arrested after a court sentenced him to three years in jail for illegally selling state gifts, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had warned PTI that it could be declared ineligible to obtain an election symbol if the intraparty elections are not organised.

According to Pakistan's Dawn newspaper, the ECP mentioned in the notice that it had already served two notices to the PTI, asking the party to conduct intra-party polls, but it failed to do so.

The intra-party elections in PTI were reportedly due on June 13, 2021, but were not conducted.&nbsp;

Pakistan news channels have gained notoriety over the years for panellists and news anchors getting under each other's skin. Routine video clips of studio fights, both verbal and physical do the rounds of the internet. This time, a similar incident has gone viral where Senator Afnan Ullah Khan, representing the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), and Sher Afzal Khan Marwat, a prominent figure associated with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have ben seen getting in on the act. During a political talk show, things got heated between the two leaders and soon, the profanity-laden monologues gave way to fistfights, leaving both, the broadcasters and the audience puzzled. During the Kal Tak programme hosted by popular TV host Javed Chaudhary, the PML-N senator accused PTI chief Imran Khan of wrongdoings and holding backdoor talks with the military brass. Marwat didn't take the arguments lying down but instead of countering using facts, stood up on his seat and landed a stinging blow on Khan's head. While the two leaders turned pugilists as they engaged in a heavyweight boxing round, the crew and the host attempted to pull them apart to no avail. It was only after both leaders had their fill that they were separated but continued mouthing expletives at each other.
