Pakistan PTI Chief Imran Khan has been arrested again and has been sentenced to three years in prison. This will bar him from contesting the elections for the next five years and a fine of over a hundred thousand Pakistani Rupees has also been imposed on him. But what's his crime? Well, he is being convicted for illegally selling State gifts. Watch to know more.

Pakistan: Imran Khan moved to Attock Jail in Punjab Province

Pakistan's ousted Prime Minister Imran Khan was arrested on Saturday for the second time in less than three months. Khan was arrested after a court sentenced him to three years in prison for illegally selling state gifts -- dubbed Toshakhana case -- and banned him from politics for the next five years.

Last time when Khan was arrested on May 9, the massive protests by his supporters had gripped the country. The unprecedented visuals showing rioting protesters demonstrating near country's military installations had stunned observers since military-intelligence syndicate is dubbed as 'the establishment' has reigned supreme since 1947 when the country first came into being after a bitter partition from India.&nbsp;

<h2>Imran Khan's latest arrest: What does it mean?</h2>

Experts cited in the media say that the verdict by court, if not repealed by higher courts, could eliminate Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) alliance's leader and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's rival in the national election. While the election schedule has not been announced as yet, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has proposed that the&nbsp;National Assembly will be dissolved on August 9.

"Police have arrested Imran Khan from his residence," Khan's lawyer, Intezar Panjotha, was quoted as saying by Reuters. "We are filing a petition against the decision in high court."

Lahore Police Chief Bilal Siddique Kamiana said that Khan was being transferred to the capital, Islamabad. However, after various reports, Imran Khan was later on moved to the notorious Attock jail in Attock and&nbsp;not in Adiala Jail of Rawalpindi.&nbsp;

<h2>Imran Khan arrest: Response from PTI</h2>

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) called for peaceful protests but there was limited public response at the time of filing this report.

The arrest remains the latest in a series of blows that have weakened Khan's political standing, after the events since May 9 (the last time when he was arrested) resulted in fragmentation of his party.

Khan's political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), said it had filed another appeal to the Supreme Court earlier on Saturday.

<h2>Don't sit silently at home: Imran Khan</h2>

Imran Khan has denied any wrongdoings and in a pre-recorded video address released by his party he asked supporters to protest peacefully.

"By the time you hear this statement, they will have arrested me. I have only one appeal: don't sit silently at home. I am struggling for you and the country and your children's future," he said.

Khan's deputy in PTI&nbsp;and Pakistan's former foreign minister, Shah Mahmood Qureshi said their leader had been denied a fair trial.

"We have to struggle for his freedom - we have to fight legally and politically and move in a peaceful way in line with Imran Khan's directives," he said in a video address.

The party's top decision-making body met Saturday and called for nationwide peaceful protests, according to a statement.

Pakistan's information minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said Khan's arrest had followed a full investigation and proper legal proceedings in a trial court.&nbsp;

"He has been found guilty of corrupt practices by hiding the benefits he accrued from national exchequer wilfully and intentionally," the verdict said.

"He cheated while providing information about gifts he obtained from Toshakhana (the state gift repository) which later proved to be false and inaccurate."

<h2>Imran Khan's re-arrest: Why August 5 did not turn out like May 9?</h2>

In the aftermath of May 9 protests, thousands of Khan's aides and supporters were arrested.

Many pro-Khan parliamentarians were also arrested. Later, they distanced themselves from Khan, with many either jumping the side or resigning from politics altogether.

Following the crackdown in the wake of May 9 events, this time around, not many leaders turned out to lead supporters to demonstrate against their party's top leader's arrest.

<h2>Toshakhana case</h2>

Khan was convicted by the court in a case that was first investigated by the election commission, which found him guilty of unlawfully selling state gifts while serving as Pakistan's prime minister.

He was accused of misusing his office to buy and sell gifts in state possession that were received during visits abroad and worth more than 140 million Pakistani rupees ($635,000).

Khan has been charged in a series of cases since being ousted from Prime Minister's Office after a parliamentary no-confidence vote in April 2022.

Once criticised for being under the thumb of powerful generals, Khan's ouster that year came amid worsening relations between him and then army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa.

Decoding Imran Khan: From flamboyant cricketer to hardline politician

Pakistan's former prime minister Imran Khan faced a major setback in the Toshakhana corruption case. Islamabad's top court has rejected Imran Khan's plea against trial proceedings in the criminal complaint and this comes just two days after the court rejected the former prime minister's request to stay the trial in the case which was being heard at an Islamabad Sessions Court.

Setback for ex-Pakistan PM Imran Khan in Toshakhana case

Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan's trial over charges that he illegally sold Toshakhana (state) gifts was temporarily halted by a Pakistani high court on Friday.&nbsp;

The temporary halt, as per a Reuters report, comes after the high court asked a trial court to look into a complaint filed by the country's election commission.

As per the PTI (Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf) party chief's lawyer Naeem Panjhuta and several local TV news outlets, the HC instructed the trial court to see if the inquiry against Khan constituted a criminal proceeding.&nbsp;

While it is yet not known when the trial will resume, the halt, as per the news agency report, is expected to be brief.&nbsp;

<h2>A guilty verdict</h2>

According to the Reuters report, legal experts predict that a guilty verdict in the case could mean the end of Khan's political career, as it may bar him from Pakistan national elections, which are due to be held in November this year.

The legal team of the Pakistani opposition leader had earlier challenged the election commission's complaint. They argued that it was not a criminal case and that the judge conducting the trial was biased against Imran Khan.

However, in spite of this allegation, the High Court turned down Khan's appeal to remove the trail court judge from the case.

<h2>What the trial is about</h2>

The trial relates to an inquiry conducted by the Pakistani election commission. The EC found Khan guilty of unlawfully selling state gifts from during his stint as the Pakistani prime minister from 2018 to 2022.&nbsp;

The Toshakhana case alleges that the former PM purchased gifts, including an expensive Graff wristwatch — which he had received during his premiership — at a discounted price from the state depository called Toshakhana, and later selling them for profit.

For hiding proceeds from the sale of the gifts, he was disqualified from holding public office for five years.

However, in spite of EC's guilty verdict, the PTI chief denies any wrongdoing.

The accusation concern gifts amounting to more than 140 million Pakistani rupees ($635,000).&nbsp;

Pakistan High Court temporarily halts Imran Khan Toshakhana graft trial

Imran Khan, the former prime minister of Pakistan, said in an interview that the military of the South Asian nation is frightened of the elections&nbsp;scheduled later this year.&nbsp;

In crisis-hit Pakistan, general elections are scheduled to be held in less than 60 days after the dissolution of the National Assembly, which will be dissolved on August 13.&nbsp;

During the interview with BBC HARDtalk published on Thursday (August 3), Khan said that "fascists" are leading the country into the "dark ages".&nbsp;

Khan was ousted in a parliamentary vote of confidence last year, and ever since, the cricket hero turned politician has been embroiled in a string of court cases and several key leaders and members of his party have also been arrested&nbsp;besides himself since&nbsp;the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) launched protests and rallies against the government.

According to him, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is "the only party that was not created by military dictators" and is still intact.&nbsp;

Experts and political analysts have said that Khan was ousted because he fell out with the powerful military, which tends to decide who will rule the 220-million South Asian nation. It was also said that during the period of time when Khan was becoming the mainstay in the Pakistani political area, he had the backing of the army.&nbsp;

During the interview, the 70-year-old said, "How come, despite the establishment openly going against us, trying to dismantle us, how come after we are out of government, we won 30 out of 37 by-elections?"&nbsp;

The former prime minister said, "Normally, it happens when you're out of power for quite a while. But instead, what happened was the party's popularity kept growing" as he noted that the establishment had hoped that his removal from power would weaken the party.&nbsp;

He said, "They have tried everything. They have put 10,000 people in jail, including women and peaceful protesters. And worse, they have tortured people."&nbsp;

<h2>Khan's legal cases&nbsp;</h2>

Towards the end of last month, Pakistan's Supreme Court rejected Khan's plea that his trial on charges of unlawfully selling state gifts be halted on concerns over the merits of the trial and that the judge hearing it was biased. According to legal experts mentioned by news agency Reuters, a possible conviction in the case could end Khan's political career.&nbsp;

The Supreme Court asked Khan to go back to the Islamabad High Court to seek a ruling over his objections.&nbsp;

Imran Khan, the former prime minister of Pakistan, said in an interview that the military of the South Asian nation is frightened of the elections scheduled later this year.

Imran Khan, the former prime minister of Pakistan, said in an interview that the military of the South Asian nation is frightened of the elections scheduled later this year. In crisis-hit Pakistan, general elections are scheduled to be held in less than 60 days after the dissolution of the National Assembly, which will be dissolved on August 13. During the interview with BBC HARDtalk published on Thursday (August 3), Khan said that "fascists" are leading the country into the "dark ages". Khan was ousted in a parliamentary vote of confidence last year, and ever since, the cricket hero turned politician has been embroiled in a string of court cases and several key leaders and members of his party have also been arrested besides himself since the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) launched protests and rallies against the government. According to him, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) is "the only party that was not created by military dictators" and is still intact. Experts and political analysts have said that Khan was ousted because he fell out with the powerful military, which tends to decide who will rule the 220-million South Asian nation. It was also said that during the period of time when Khan was becoming the mainstay in the Pakistani political area, he had the backing of the army. The former prime minister said, "Normally, it happens when you're out of power for quite a while. But instead, what happened was the party's popularity kept growing" as he noted that the establishment had hoped that his removal from power would weaken the party. He said, "They have tried everything. They have put 10,000 people in jail, including women and peaceful protesters. And worse, they have tortured people." Pakistan: Imran Khan says military afraid of election; 'fascists' leading nation into 'dark ages'

Pakistan's Supreme Court on Wednesday (August 2) rejected former prime minister Imran Khan's plea seeking an immediate halt in the Toshakhana case's trial court proceedings.

Pakistan's Supreme Court on Wednesday (August 2) rejected former prime minister Imran Khan's plea seeking an immediate halt in the Toshakhana case's trial court proceedings. The Supreme Court has summoned officials of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for Friday. On Wednesday, the ECP deferred the indictment of Khan in the case and he is now expected to be charged at the next hearing on August 22. Khan, the chairperson of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), approached the apex court on Monday against the Islamabad High Court's decision not to grant a stay on the trial court's proceedings. In his application, Khan contended all pending petitions before the high court would become ineffective if the judge hearing the case proceeded with recording his statement under Section 342 since no stay had been granted by the high court against the challenges to the jurisdiction of the trial court. The Toshakhana case The Toshakhana case accuses Khan of buying gifts, including an expensive Graff wristwatch, he received as the prime minister, at a discounted price from the state depository called Toshakhana and selling them for a profit. The reference filed by lawmakers of the ruling government alleged that the PTI chairperson did not disclose details of these gifts he retained. The case-related complaint was filed under the Election Act 2017, and Khan was summoned to appear in person and was required to record his statement under Section 342. According to a report by Dawn, the ECP initiated contempt proceedings against Khan and top PTI leaders Asad Umar and Fawad Chaudhry last year for allegedly using “intemperate” language against the chief election commissioner and the electoral watchdog. However, in January, the Supreme Court allowed the ECP to continue proceedings against them. But instead of appearing before the poll commission, the three leaders challenged the ECP's notices and contempt proceedings in various high courts. The leaders also sought from high courts a declaratory relief from the charges. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan's bail was extended in three cases regarding violence outside the Federal Judicial Complex (FJC) and the Islamabad High Court (IHC). On Wednesday (July 19), an Islamabad anti-terrorism court (ATC) extended Khan's bail in these three cases until July 26, according to a report by Dawn. In the last proceedings, the court issued bailable arrest warrants for Khan, the chairperson of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and summoned him on Wednesday. Khan reached the courtroom accompanied by his legal team. The Dawn report said that as the hearing in the case began, ATC Judge Abul Hasnaat Muhammad Zulfikar addressed the police, asking them to declare the suspect innocent if he was innocent or present any evidence they had. The judge warned that if the investigation was conducted properly, he would personally summon the police inspector general. Khan's lawyer argued that the PTI chairperson was wrongly implicated in the cases. “If there is nothing against him, then let us know, and we will withdraw our bail plea,” the lawyer added. As both sides furnished their arguments, Judge Zulfikar extended Khan's bail in the three cases. Toshakhana case: Islamabad HC reserves verdict on Khan's petition The report also said that the Islamabad High Court reserved its verdict filed by Imran Khan challenging the maintainability of a criminal complaint against him for allegedly concealing details of the Toshakhana gifts. Imran’s counsel, Khawaja Haris, informed the high court that the sessions court pronounced its verdict merely 15 minutes after hearing arguments from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), without allowing the former prime minister’s legal team to present their version. Haris said their request to postpone the hearing from July 8 to July 10 was also rejected. He argued that if a high court sends a case back to the trial court, it should be referred to a different court instead. Chief Justice Aamer Farooq asked about the next date of the sessions court hearing. The counsel replied that it was fixed for Thursday, the report added. Pakistan: Ex-PM Imran Khan's bail extended in three terrorism cases until July 26: Report

After the chaos of May 9, Pervez Khattak, who was the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's secretary general and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa's chief minister under the PTI administration, resigned from his position as the party's provincial president. Pervez Khattak, a close ally of deposed premier Imran Khan, announced on Monday that he has founded a new political party called "Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Parliamentarians."

Pakistan: Ex-Imran aide Pervez Khattak floats new party

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief and former Pakistan Prime Minister,&nbsp;Imran Khan on Friday said that he will create a new political party to contest the upcoming general elections and will also win them, in the event of a possible ban on his current party, Dawn reported citing Nikkei Asia.

In the wake of violent protests on May 9 in the country, that led to&nbsp;a lot of destruction, and the succeeding clampdown on the demonstrators and the PTI, many authorities had called for a ban on the party.

As per reports, Pakistan Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah had said that putting a ban on the party was the only solution.

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif had said that the move in this direction was being considered. Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman and Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had also said that his party will not defy any move to impose a ban on the PTI.

On being questioned about the impact of a possible ban on his electoral future by Nikkei Asia, Imran said, “If they remove the party then we will form a party with a new name and still win the elections.”

Imran was quoted as saying that “Even if they disqualify me and throw me in jail, the party will still win”.

The PTI chief further underlined to the outlet that his base of supporters “remains intact”, asserting that national politics had “fundamentally changed”.

When asked about the continued crackdown of his party, the former Pak PM said that the government was “still trying to break it through intimidation”.

He further said that the general elections would be “completely discredited” if his party candidates weren't allowed to participate.

“This will make the elections useless and subsequently there will be even more destabilisation in the country,” he was quoted as saying.

<h2>Imran Khan seeks guarantee from IMF over timely elections</h2>

Imran Khan sought a guarantee from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) that the general elections in the country would be held at its scheduled time, according to a report by Geo News, after a delegation of the IMF met Khan at his Zaman Park residence in Lahore.

Quoting sources, Geo News reported that Khan asked the IMF to ensure that the general elections, scheduled to take place in October, will be held on time. “What guarantee can you (IMF) give that the elections in the country will be held on time,” the PTI chairperson was quoted as saying in the huddle.

During the meeting, which lasted more than an hour, the two sides discussed the recent staff-level pact agreed upon between Pakistan and the global lender, with Khan extending his full support to it.&nbsp;

In an address via a video link, Imran said PTI has agreed to “endorse the standby arrangement” with the IMF until elections were held and a new government was formed.

“Obviously, when a new government comes, they will hold talks with the IMF according to their own programme,” he added.&nbsp;

Apart from Imran, the IMF team met with other PTI members, including Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Shaukat Tarin, Omar Ayub Khan, Sania Nishtar, Shibli Faraz, Taimur Jhagra and Muzammil Aslam.

“We welcome the SBA (standby arrangement) to preserve macroeconomic stability by anchoring external financing and sound policies ahead of the national elections due in the fall of this year and until a new government is formed," said senior PTI leader Hammad Azhar.&nbsp;

Imran Khan vows to form new political party if PTI gets banned

Pakistan registered a whopping 79 percent spike in terror attacks in the first six months of 2023 compared to the corresponding period last year, a prominent think-tank said here on Monday.

Pakistan sees 79% rise in terror attacks in first half of 2023: Report

Pakistan’s top election body on Tuesday issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against former prime minister Imran Khan in a case of contempt.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) also issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against former Information and Broadcasting Minister Fawad Chaudhry for the same offence.

The ECP had initiated contempt proceedings last year against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Khan and former party leaders Chaudhry and Asad Umar for allegedly using “intemperate” language against the electoral watchdog and its head, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC).

The arrest warrant order against Khan and Chaudhry was passed by a four-member ECP bench headed by member Nisar Durrani after the two PTI leaders failed to appear before it on Tuesday despite several warnings.

However, Umar was spared after his counsel told the ECP that his client had another case to attend and a medical appointment, requesting an exemption from appearance.

The election commission accepted the request and directed the lawyer to submit a formal plea in this regard but it issued non-bailable arrest warrants against Khan and Chaudhry and adjourned the hearing till July 25.

The ECP had asked the PTI leaders to appear in person or through their counsels to explain their position but instead, they challenged the ECP notices and contempt proceedings in higher courts.

After lengthy proceedings, the Supreme Court in January allowed the ECP to continue proceedings against Khan, Chaudhry and Umar. Subsequently, the ECP decided to frame charges against them.

Khan, 70, has been facing scores of cases in various courts after he was removed from power in April last year.

Chaudhry, once a diehard supporter of Khan, quit PTI over the May 9 violence carried out by the party supporters.
