<p>In a press release on Tuesday (April 17), IMD noted that maximum temperatures were in the range of 40-42°C over many parts of the plains of Northwest India, Central and East India and 35-40°C over many parts of the rest of the country except over Western Himalayan Region (22-25°C) and islands (30-34°C). Maximum temperatures were above normal by 3-5°C over many parts of East and Northeast India.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Heatwave:</strong> The weather department stated that the heat wave conditions are prevailing in isolated pockets over Gangetic West Bengal for the last six days, coastal Andhra Pradesh for the last four days and Bihar for the last three days.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per the report, Northwest India is expected to witness a rise in maximum temperatures by 2-3°C during the next three days and there will be a gradual fall by 2-4°C during the subsequent two days and a rise by 2-4°C thereafter. Meanwhile, the heatwave conditions are very likely in isolated pockets over Punjab, Haryana, West Uttar Pradesh on April 18, and East Uttar Pradesh on April 18 and April 19.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In East India, no significant change in the maximum temperatures is expected in the next five days. On the other hand, the southern part will see a rise in maximum temperatures by about 2°C (Andhra Pradesh and Telangana) in the next five days.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Rainfall:</strong> The weather department also predicted that light or moderate scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with thunderstorms is very likely over Western Himalayan Region during the next five days and isolated to scattered rainfall over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi and Rajasthan from April 18 to 20.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The warnings were issued after a report emerged that at least 13 people died at a Maharashtra government event while being exposed to the sun for several hours.&nbsp;</p>

<p>IMD states that in the yellow warning areas, the temperature is moderate and heat is tolerable for the general public, but there is a moderate health concern for vulnerable people e.g. infants, the elderly, and people with chronic diseases. It is advised to avoid heat exposure and wear lightweight, light-coloured, loose, cotton clothes. And also cover the head with a cloth, hat or umbrella.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, in the orange alert regions, the temperature is high and there's an increased likelihood of heat illness symptoms in people who are either exposed to the sun for a prolonged period or doing heavy work. People must drink sufficient water, even if not thirsty and use ORS or other drinks to stay hydrated.&nbsp;</p>

<p>M Mohapatra, director general of IMD said, "When the winds blow from the eastern side or from the direction of Bay of Bengal then there is some clouding at times which bring down temperatures over the eastern states. But hot, dry winds from the northwest are blowing over east India, which has comparatively higher humidity levels due to their location. So, people in the eastern states need to take heat prevention measures adequately."&nbsp;</p>

However, March was also the 12th coolest since 1951, the first time that IMD gridded data and also the complete opposite of its preceding month which was the 13th warmest since over seven decades ago.&nbsp;</p>

According to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), Mumbai's AQI at 11:55 am was 86. The city earlier had been recording "poor" and "very poor" air-quality index (AQI) for the last few days.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The SAFAR dashboard showed Worli's AQI at 66, Andheri's at 61, and Mazgaon's and Malad's AQI at 80&nbsp;and 75 respectively. However, no change was reflected in Colaba's AQI, which remained at 139.</p>

<p>As per weather experts, an AQI between zero and 50&nbsp;is considered to be 'GOOD,' 51-100 is 'SATISFACTORY' and 'MODERATE' is if it's between 101-200.</p>

<p>On the other hand, AQI between 201 and 300 is considered to be 'POOR,' 301-400 'VERY POOR' and 'SEVERE' if it's between 401 and 500.</p>

<p>It's very unusual for Mumbai to witness rains in the month of March. The Indian Meteorological Department, the westerly wind and moisture incursion from the Arabian Sea might be the reason behind this weather change.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said some parts of Mumbai received 20-25 mm of rain early morning between 7 and 8 am on Tuesday. It added that Mondavi fire station and Byculla fire stations reported 28 mm and 23 mm rainfall respectively.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Eastern suburbs like Mulund, Gavanpada, and Bhandup Complex reported 20 mm and 19 mm rainfall respectively. While, in the Western suburbs, Dahisar fire station and Chincholi fire station reported 18 mm and 14 mm rainfall, respectively.&nbsp;</p>

In a warning for fishermen, it was stated that winds would be gusting at speeds of 45-65kmph in parts of the Bay of Bengal. <p>The India Meteorological Department has issued an ‘orange alert’ in Delhi and other neighbouring locations for severe heatwave conditions with temperatures ranging from 44 to 47 degrees Celsius, reported by ANI.</p>

<p>The national capital has been experiencing severe heatwaves in recent days. On Saturday (June 4), Delhi saw searing summer heat, with the temperatures exceeding 47 degrees Celsius. Mungeshpur saw a temperature reaching 47.1 degrees Celsius, while Pitampura recorded 46.5 degrees Celsius.&nbsp;</p>

Shall continue for four more days. We advise people to venture out carefully as heat spells are very severe.”</p>

Monsoon arrives in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, temperatures to drop in northern India

<p>Indian Government's Union Ministry of Education has encouraged schools to start courses early in the morning and decrease work hours to enable children cope with the heatwave sweeping throughout the country.</p>

<p>The announcement comes as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts another heat wave in Delhi starting on Friday. High temperatures are causing problems in most sections of north, central, northwest, and east India.</p>

<p>According to the Ministry's guidelines, school hours may begin early and end before noon. It stated that the start time might be as early as 7:00 a.m., and the amount of school hours per day could be reduced.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the Ministry, sports or other outside activities that expose students to direct sunlight should be altered in the early morning. It was suggested that school assemblies be held in a covered location or in classrooms with shorter intervals.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the Ministry, comparable precautions may be used during dispersal after school has ended.</p>

<p>In an advisory the ministry, urged school officials to limit outside activities and ensure that student stay hydrated during the school hours. It further stated that teaching and non-teaching staffs to be trained to administer first aid in case a student suffers of mild heat-stroke.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The guidelines also recommended&nbsp;schools to relax its uniform policies like neck ties and allow students to wear light coloured cotton clothes and allow students to wear Canvas shoes instead of leather.</p>

Children carrying tiffins may be advised not to carry food that can turn stale quickly… in every period, teachers should remind students to sip water from their water bottles.”</p>

<p>Schools are told to prepare strong first-aid facilities and ensure proper availability of oral rehydration solutions and plan for a speedy access to health centres nearby in emergency. &nbsp;</p>

<p>From shrubs to flowers, Kumar has grown a variety of 20 crops and believes he is doing his "own small bit" for the environment.</p>

<p>He acquired seeds from his acquaintances and roadside and planted them on his autorickshaw after putting a mat and some soil on its roof.</p>

<p>According to Kumar, his fellow drivers have been asking him for tips to impress customers.</p>

<p>Since 2010, more than 6,500 people have been killed by heatwaves in India. Climate change, which traps carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, is making them harsher and more frequent across South Asia.&nbsp;</p>

Under its influence from January 4-7, there could be rainfall or snowfall at most places over the western Himalayan region like J-K, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
