Many Indian cities are also experiencing higher night temperatures because of the urban heat-island effect. At the start of April, IMD forecasted a harsh and arid summer over most parts of the country in April-June. This heat wave might last for ten to 20 days. A cyclonic circulation over east Afghanistan and another over northwest Rajasthan may cause scattered rainfall with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Uttar Pradesh on April 29. Moreover, there are chances of hailstorms over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, and heavy rainfall in Jammu, Kashmir and Muzaffarabad. Assam's cyclonic circulation may cause rainfall or snowfall in Arunachal Pradesh. Rainfall is expected in Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura during April 29 and May 3. During a news conference, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, the Director General of IMD, said: "According to the rainfall data from 1971 till 2020, we have introduced new long-period average and normal. According to this normal, from June 1 to 30 September, the average of the total rainfall of the entire country will be 87 cm."&nbsp;

The official release also mentioned that the normal cumulative rainfall, however, does not guarantee uniform temporal and spatial distribution of rain across the country, with climate change further increasing the variability of the rain-bearing system.&nbsp;

The IMD chief further said that the data from 1951 to 2023 shows that India experienced above-normal monsoon rainfall on nine occasions when La Nina followed the El Nino event.&nbsp;

IMD's release mentioned that moderate El Niño conditions are prevailing over the equatorial Pacific region currently. Several climate model forecasts have indicated that El Niño conditions are likely to weaken further to neutral El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) conditions in the early part of the monsoon season and La Niña conditions are likely to develop during the second half of monsoon season.&nbsp;

The neutral Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) conditions are prevailing over the Indian Ocean at present. As per the climate indicators, positive IOD conditions are likely to develop during the later part of the southwest monsoon&nbsp;season.&nbsp;

The report also mentioned that the winter and spring snow cover extent over the Northern Hemisphere as well as Eurasia has a "generally inverse relationship with the subsequent Indian summer monsoon rainfall".&nbsp;

The northern hemisphere snow cover areas during January to March 2024 were observed to be below normal.&nbsp;

However, the focus should be on moderate health concerns for vulnerable people e.g. infants, the elderly, and people with chronic diseases.&nbsp;

Warm night conditions are very likely to prevail in isolated pockets over Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Marathwada and North Interior Karnataka on April 5 and April 6.&nbsp;

The Indian financial capital city of Mumbai has been witnessing unusual weather patterns over the past few weeks from hot afternoons to light rain and now some of the lowest temperatures that it has seen in years. On Sunday (Mar 3), Mumbai recorded its lowest maximum daytime temperature for the first time in 12 years.&nbsp;

<h2>Low temperatures in Mumbai</h2>

For the first time since March 2012, Mumbai recorded the lowest maximum daytime temperature of 28.8 degrees Celsius which is less than four degrees below the normal average for this time of the year.&nbsp;

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) observatories in the city’s Santacruz and Colaba areas, on Sunday, recorded the 28.8 degrees Celsius temperature which is also just one and a half degrees higher than the lowest maximum temperature for March recorded in 2006 at 27.3 degrees Celsius.&nbsp;

The Indian financial capital city, on Monday (March 4) morning also recorded a minimum temperature of 17.9 degrees Celsius at the Santacruz observatory which is the lowest temperature in the month of March since 2020. The temperature of 17.9 degrees Celsius is also two degrees below normal. &nbsp;

<h2>Cold weather to continue?</h2>

According to multiple media reports citing IMD officials, the cool weather is expected to continue for the next couple of days.&nbsp;

The minimum temperature is expected to hover around 18 degrees Celsius while the maximum could be around 30 degrees Celsius over the next 48 hours, according to the head of IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre, Sunil Kamble.

The IMD official has attributed the recent cold weather and current wind patterns to northerly winds and snowfall in the northern part of India, in recent weeks.&nbsp;

Gujarat received widespread unseasonal rain accompanied by thunderstorms on Sunday. Citing data from the State Emergency Operation Centre, PTI reported that 220 of 251 talukas of Gujarat received up to 50 mm of rainfall in 10 hours since 6 am. Ahmedabad received 15 mm of rainfall for two hours in the morning.

Earlier on Sunday, Manorama Mohanty, the director of the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) centre in Ahmedabad, said the rain forecast was only for Sunday.

"It will abate by tomorrow and remain concentrated in some parts of south Gujarat and Saurashtra districts," Mohanty told reporters.

Earlier, the IMD said that rain was being caused due to a cyclonic circulation lying over the northeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Saurashtra and Kutch regions.

The weather bureau added that apart from light rainfall forecast for Monday in some parts of south Gujarat and Saurashtra districts, the state would experience dry weather from Tuesday.

Light to moderate rain or thundershowers are very likely to occur at a few places in the districts of North Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada."

Furthermore, there is a high chance of heavy rainfall in isolated parts of Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Tripura, coastal Tamil Nadu, and Kerala on September 28 and 29.&nbsp;

Similar weather conditions are likely to prevail over parts of Odisha, Chhattishgarh, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Karnataka, and Goa on September 30 and October 1.&nbsp;

IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra addressed a virtual press conference on Thursday (August 31). He said that September was likely to witness normal rainfall in the range of 91-109 per cent of the long-period average of 167.9 mm.

However, Mohapatra added that even if rainfall in September remains on the higher side, the seasonal rainfall (June-September) average is expected to be below normal.

He said that the development of El Nino in the equatorial Pacific Ocean was the most important reason behind the less rainfall in August.

However, he added that the Indian Ocean Dipole - the difference in sea surface temperature of the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal - had started turning positive. This he said, may potentially counter the impact of El Nino.

The director general said that the Madden Julian Oscillation - the eastward-moving pulse of clouds and the rainfall in the tropics was turning favourable for the Monsoon in India and it will possibly lead to the revival of the Monsoon.

In central India, the rainfall in August was around 164.5 mm compared to the previous lowest rainfall record of 172.8 mm in 1905.

Peninsular India recorded 73.5 mm of rain in August as compared to the previous lowest rainfall record of 89.4 mm in 1905.

In August this year, there was a 36 per cent rainfall deficiency. The month was also hot in addition to being dry.

The all-India average for maximum temperature was 32.09 degree&nbsp;Celsius. Normally, the average is 31.09 degree&nbsp;Celsius. The all-India average mean temperature was 28.40 degree&nbsp;Celsius compared to 27.55 degree&nbsp;Celsius, which is the case normally.&nbsp;

Figures under both these heads were highest for the month since 1901.

Citing experts, the report said the break in monsoon, which had started nearly a week back, was likely to continue till Wednesday (August 16). "It's a classical break in the monsoon that we are seeing for close to a week now. It may last till around August 16, when a low-pressure system may form over the Bay of Bengal followed by another a few days later," veteran meteorologist M Rajeevan told the publication. Rajeevan said these systems were likely to bring rain to states such as Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and some adjoining areas, as per the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) forecast. However, the veteran meteorologist pointed out that widespread rainfall across the country was unlikely after August 20. IMD issues fresh rain alerts Meanwhile, the IMD issued fresh rain alerts on Friday. In a statement, the IMD said, "Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall likely to continue over Uttarakhand during next 5 days and over Bihar, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Assam & Meghalaya during next 2 days and isolated heavy rainfall thereafter for subsequent 3 days." "Subdued rainfall activity likely over rest parts of the country during next one week and likely revival of active Monsoon conditions thereafter," the statement added. The weather bureau said it is likely there would be light/moderate scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall over Himachal Pradesh till Sunday, over Uttarakhand till Tuesday (August 15), over Punjab and Haryana till Sunday, and over West Uttar Pradesh till Monday (August 14). In east India, "Light/moderate fairly widespread to widespread rainfall with isolated heavy rainfall activity very likely over Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim during 11th -13th August; over Gangetic West Bengal on 12th & 13th and over Jharkhand on 12th & 13th August. The Brihanmumbai Municipal&nbsp;Corporation (BMC) in its evening bulletin said that in the last 24 hours, Mumbai&nbsp;has witnessed some 26 incidents of tree falls, six incidents of house collapse and 15 incidents of electricity short-circuits.&nbsp;

As per the department, residents complained about landslides as well.&nbsp;

Two people lost their lives this week. Two men, Premlal Nirmal, 30, and Kaushal Doshi, 38, died due to injuries caused by tree&nbsp;falls.&nbsp;

Additionally, a 36 years old woman in Thane,&nbsp;and a teenager named Rehan Shaikh were reported injured due to a building collapse.&nbsp;

Mumbai received an average rainfall of 93mm, while the eastern and western suburbs experienced 127mm and 123mm of rainfall respectively.&nbsp;

The department also said that Dahisar received 154.5mm, Bhayander in Thane district experienced 128.0mm, and Juhu Airport and Ram Mandir recorded 71.5mm and 76.5mm&nbsp;respectively.

The IMD earlier issued an orange alert, predicted heavy to hefty rainfall in six districts of Maharashtra, and said that Mumbai is expected to witness relatively less intense showers.&nbsp;

The department also issued an orange alert for the districts of Thane, Raigad, Palghar, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, and Nashik, indicating the possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall in a few places.

The weather department predicted a cloudy sky with light rain or thundershowers for these three days.&nbsp;

In its forecast, the IMD said, "Light to moderate rain and thundershowers are expected to hit Delhi in the coming days, and the sky condition will remain generally cloudy." According to Business Today, the weather agency also issued a yellow alert for NCR regions including Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, and Gurugram.&nbsp;

The department further said that light or moderately widespread rainfall with isolated thunderstorms and lighting is very likely to prevail over the western Himalayan region on June 24 and 28. In the plains of northwest India except Rajasthan, the rainfall might occur between June 25 and 28.&nbsp;

Moreover, the department also said that isolated heavy rainfall is likely to occur in&nbsp;West and East Uttar Pradesh during June 24-26 and 25-27, respectively. Predicting rainfall in Rajasthan, the Met Department said that rain is likely to prevail during June 25–28.

The rainfall comes as Uttar Pradesh suffers through searing heat, due to which several individuals also lost their lives. The maximum temperature reached above 45 degrees Celsius.&nbsp;

Along with the national capital, India's weather department predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Maharashtra over the next two days. The IMD issued a yellow alert for the state capital Mumbai along with other areas like Thane, Palghar, and Sidhudurg, predicting heat and very heavy rainfall for the next 4-5 days.&nbsp;

An orange alert for Raigad and Ratnagiri has also been issued.

In conversation with news agency PTI, an IMD official said that a low-pressure system formed in the Bay of Bengal, cyclonic circulation over Gujarat's Kachchh region, and an active trough spread over Maharashtra to coastal Karnataka would bring in heavy to very heavy rainfall.&nbsp;

The weather department predicted a cloudy sky with light rain or thundershowers for these three days. In its forecast, the IMD said, "Light to moderate rain and thundershowers are expected to hit Delhi in the coming days, and the sky condition will remain generally cloudy." According to Business Today, the weather agency also issued a yellow alert for NCR regions including Noida, Ghaziabad, Faridabad, and Gurugram. The department further said that light or moderately widespread rainfall with isolated thunderstorms and lighting is very likely to prevail over the western Himalayan region on June 24 and 28. In the plains of northwest India except Rajasthan, the rainfall might occur between June 25 and 28. Moreover, the department also said that isolated heavy rainfall is likely to occur in West and East Uttar Pradesh during June 24-26 and 25-27, respectively. Predicting rainfall in Rajasthan, the Met Department said that rain is likely to prevail during June 25–28. The rainfall comes as Uttar Pradesh suffers through searing heat, due to which several individuals also lost their lives. The maximum temperature reached above 45 degrees Celsius. IMD predicts heavy downpours in Mumbai Along with the national capital, India's weather department predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Maharashtra over the next two days. The IMD issued a yellow alert for the state capital Mumbai along with other areas like Thane, Palghar, and Sidhudurg, predicting heat and very heavy rainfall for the next 4-5 days. An orange alert for Raigad and Ratnagiri has also been issued. In conversation with news agency PTI, an IMD official said that a low-pressure system formed in the Bay of Bengal, cyclonic circulation over Gujarat's Kachchh region, and an active trough spread over Maharashtra to coastal Karnataka would bring in heavy to very heavy rainfall. Dr Mrityunjay Mohapatra, IMD's Director General, said that the southwest monsoon has advanced into parts of Maharashtra, Gujarat, UP, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttrakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and even Ladakh on June 25. In a rare event, the monsoon on Sunday covered both Delhi and Mumbai together. While it hit the national capital two days earlier than schedule, its entry into the financial capital is two weeks late, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). "The Southwest Monsoon has advanced over Mumbai and Delhi today (June 25)," an IMD official said.

The monsoon, which had a slow start, has now made swift progress, covering numerous regions, including some parts of Maharashtra, entire Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, northeast India, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, east Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, most parts of Himachal Pradesh, and some parts of Haryana, according to an IMD official.

Normally, the rain-bearing system reaches Kerala by June 1, Mumbai by June 11, and the national capital by June 27.

Although the monsoon has covered a significant portion of north India, including Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and a large part of Jammu and Kashmir, on schedule or slightly ahead, it is currently running 10-12 days behind schedule for a considerable part of central India, where a significant number of farmers heavily rely on it.

D S Pai, a senior scientist at the IMD, explained that Cyclone Biparjoy had impacted the monsoon's progress over southern India and the adjoining western and central parts of the country.

He said, "Since the system absorbed most of the moisture, the monsoon's progress along the west coast was slow." However, the Bay of Bengal branch of the monsoon, responsible for bringing rains to the northeast and east India, remained stronger between June 11 and June 23.

Pai attributed this to a low-pressure system that formed over the Bay of Bengal in mid-June and the remnants of cyclone Biparjoy, which aided the monsoon's advancement over east India.

Pai noted that the Arabian Sea branch of the monsoon is now gaining strength with a low-pressure system developing over the Bay of Bengal. "The monsoon may cover the entire Maharashtra and some parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan on Sunday," added the senior meteorologist.

He said that it represents a new pulse of the monsoon, and rapid progress is expected.

India: Monsoon arrives in Delhi, Mumbai together, says IMD

The Indian Meteorological Department on Wednesday issued a rainfall warning for 11 Indian states. As per the weather agency, heavy rain is expected to begin in Gujarat today (June 15) due to the red alert that was issued earlier for the Saurashtra and Kutch coasts.&nbsp;

The Twitter post read, “VSCS Biparjoy over the Northeast Arabian Sea at 0530 hours IST on June 15, 2023, about 180km west-southwest of Jakhau Port (Gujarat). To cross Saurashtra, Kutch, and adjoining Pakistan coasts between Mandvi and Karachi near Jakhau Port by evening of June 15 as a VSVS.”

The weather department on Wednesday also issued heavy&nbsp;rain warning in its press release stating, light to moderate rainfall at most places, with heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at isolated areas very likely over Devbhumi Dwarka, and heavy to very heavy at isolated places over Kutch, Porbandar, Jamnagar, Rajkot, Junagarh, and Morbi districts of Saurashtra and Kutch from&nbsp;June 14.

In a tweet shared by the IMD, the post said that cyclone "Biparjoy" would cause rain to fall in Delhi during the next few days. The storm will provide significant relief from the heat because the temperature in certain city areas was over 45 degrees Celsius. In comparison, the mercury on Tuesday almost reached 50 degrees Celsius in some areas.&nbsp;

The national capital might experience a little rain or drizzle beginning Thursday (June 15), but the IMD predicted that the capital might witness heavy rain and thunderstorms on Sunday (June 18). It added that similar rain portions are expected in Haryana, Rajasthan, west Uttar Pradesh, and south Karnataka.&nbsp;
