At Safdarjung, Delhi's base weather station, the mercury soared to 40.2 &deg;C. Ridge and Ayanagar weren't far behind, as per news agency PTI, they clocked in at 41 &deg;C. Even Palam and Lodhi Road, usually considered slightly cooler pockets, reported highs near 39 &deg;C, said the IMD.
This was officially the first heat wave of the season. The IMD defines a heatwave as a situation in which temperatures reach at least 40&deg;C in the plains or there's a deviation from normal of 4.5&deg;C to 6.4&deg;C.

The year 2024 was the warmest on record in India since 1901, with the average minimum temperature settling 0.90 degrees Celsius above the long-period average, the IMD said on Wednesday.
The annual mean temperature in 2024 was 25.75 degrees Celsius, 0.65 degrees above the long-period average.
The average maximum temperature stood at 31.25 degrees Celsius, 0.20 degrees above normal. The average minimum temperature was 20.24 degrees Celsius, 0.90 degrees above normal, according to India Meteorological Department (IMD) Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.
The year 2024 surpassed 2016, which recorded a mean land surface air temperature of 0.54 degrees Celsius above normal, making it the warmest year since 1901.

Mohapatra said the rise in minimum temperatures in 2024 was "quite high".
"Long-term data shows most parts of the country are witnessing a rising trend in minimum temperatures, particularly in post-monsoon and winter seasons," he said.
The IMD said La Nina conditions, characterised by cooler ocean surface temperatures in the central Pacific Ocean and usually associated with colder winters in north India, were expected to develop in January but would be short-lived.

Experts warn that the world is now entering a phase during which temperatures will consistently exceed this threshold.

2024 warmest year in India since 1901, says IMD

The Indian national capital Delhi was lashed by showers throughout Friday (Dec 27), recording 41.2 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours up to 8:30 am on Saturday (Dec 28). This is the highest single-day December rainfall in the past 101 years, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Chennai city and 16 districts of Tamil Nadu, the Union territory of Puducherry, have been issued an Orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall (12-20 cm), while 10 other districts have been issued a Yellow alert for heavy rain (7-11 cm).&nbsp;

In meteorology, a low-pressure area is associated with rainfall, stormy weather, rough sea conditions, and gusty winds.&nbsp;

The IMD maintains that the system is likely to move west-northwestwards towards the southern coast of Tamil Nadu, following which it will weaken into a 'low-pressure area' around Friday, 13th December. For Friday, a yellow alert for heavy rainfall has been issued for 12 districts spanning the western and southern regions of Tamil Nadu.&nbsp;

With winds forecast to be gusting at 55 kmph until Saturday, 14th December, fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing out along the Tamil Nadu Coast. Similar conditions are expected to prevail along parts of the Kerala coast as well, and a warning has been issued for fishermen.&nbsp;

Over the last 24 hours, a maximum of 18 cm of rainfall has been recorded in Kodiayakarai, Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu. Chennai city and adjoining regions have also witnessed around 10 cm of rainfall.&nbsp;

In light of the rainfall alert, five teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are on standby for deployment, with 30 personnel in each team.

The month of November 2024 recorded the second warmest for the country and warmest for northwest India in 123 years, since 1901, said IMD. The above-normal average temperatures were attributed to the lack of western disturbances.&nbsp;

On Thursday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a heavy rainfall warning for a few districts in Gujarat. Speaking to the news agency ANI, IMD scientist Ramashray Yadav said that the heavy rainfall warning had been issued for Jamnagar, Dwarka, Morbi, and Kutch districts. "The deep depression lies 60 km (kilometres) northwest of Bhuj, 80 km northeast of Naliya. It is moving at the speed of 3 km/hr. Given this system, Saurashtra and Kutch are likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall," Yadav said. "In the last 24 hours, 30 cm of rain was recorded in Kutch and 29 cm in Dwarka. From June 1 this year, the whole of Gujarat has received 852 mm rain against the normal 577 mm rain...," he added. Army deployed for rescue operations Six columns of the Indian Army were conducting rescue operations in the worst-affected areas as the flood-like situation continued in parts of Gujarat due to incessant rainfall. CM Patel reviews flood preparedness Also on Thursday, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel arrived at the Gandhinagar State Emergency Operation Center to review the state's flood preparedness.
