<p>Various towns famous for vacations in summer surpassed their usual temperatures in May. In Shimla, the daytime temperature has consistently been recorded above the seasonal norms, causing concern among residents and tourists alike.</p>

<p>A red alert indicates heavy to extremely heavy rain of more than 20 centimetres (cm) in 24 hours. On the other hand, an orange alert indicates&nbsp;very heavy rain of 11 cm to 20 cm.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A yellow alert means heavy rainfall between 6 cm and 11 cm.</p>

<p>The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in a press release, on Wednesday (May 22) warned that the heat wave is likely to continue for the next five days.</p>

<p>"Heat wave to severe heat wave conditions most likely to continue over plains of Northwest India and Heat wave conditions over north Madhya Pradesh &amp; Gujarat State during next 5 days," said the weather department.</p>

<p>This comes as power demand&nbsp;across India witnesses a significant rise. On Wednesday afternoon, national capital&nbsp;Delhi clocked its peak power demand of 8000 MW at 3:42 pm. This, as per reports, is&nbsp;the highest ever in the history of the national capital.</p>

<p>Just a day earlier, Delhi had created another record with its peak power demand reaching 7,717 MW on Tuesday afternoon amid intense summer heat, said discom officials.</p>

<h2><strong>Maximum temperature may rise</strong></h2>

<p>On Tuesday, as per IMD, "maximum temperatures were in the range of 44-47°C at many places in Rajasthan; in some places across Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and&nbsp;Gujarat state; in isolated pockets over West Uttar Pradesh; in the range of 40- 44°C in many places over Punjab, Odisha and&nbsp;interior Maharashtra; in some parts of East Uttar Pradesh and&nbsp;Chhattisgarh; in isolated pockets of Telangana."</p>

<p>The temperatures will "very likely" rise by 2-3°C over the next five days, it adds.</p>

<p>"Gradual rises by about 2-3°C in maximum temperatures very likely over many parts of Central India and Maharashtra during next 5 days."</p>

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a severe heatwave alerts for Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Chandigarh, predicting that heatwave to severe heatwave alerts will persist over the next five days.

<p>As per IMD, a heatwave is declared when the maximum temperature surpasses 40°C in the plains; 37°C in coastal regions and 30°C in hilly regions, even as the deviation from normal is between 4.5°C and 6.4°C above the average maximum.</p>

<p>This will be followed by other parts of northern India and Bihar experiencing similar conditions over the next five days, the weather forecasting agency added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At the same time, temperatures in other parts including northwest India and Gujarat will go up to two to three degrees. This increase in heat is because of weakening western disturbances which is a weather pattern responsible for keeping the temperature down.</p>

<p>“There is no immediate chance of rain. There is also a subsidence of hot air, which is heating the surface due to an anticyclone over northwest India. Soon, there will be an advection of hot air towards UP and Bihar also. Conditions will remain very hot for the next seven days,” said M Mohapatra, director general of IMD.</p>

<p>Advection is the transfer of heat through the horizontal movement of air which is more significant than the vertical movement. In the middle latitudes, day-to-day variation in weather is caused by advection only.</p>

<p>"Forecasts indicate that western India, including the National Capital Territory of Delhi, will experience a period of intense heat from May 18-20, 2024. The event will include unusually warm nighttime temperatures, which can intensify the risk of heat-related illness and death," the Climate Central group said in an analysis.</p>

<p>Human-caused climate change made these conditions much more likely,&nbsp; Climate Central said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“There is an anticyclone over West Rajasthan and Pakistan, causing the incursion of hot air from Balochistan and Thar desert. Heatwaves have started in parts of Rajasthan and some parts of Delhi also met the heatwave criteria on Wednesday. The area impacted by heatwaves will increase,” said Mahesh Palawat, vice president, of climate and meteorology at Skymet Weather.</p>

<p>Contrary to this, the weather in south of India has been better with instances of rain across peninsular India.</p>

<p>This is due to the cyclonic circulation over Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu and the adjoining southern fringes of the state.</p>

<p>This circulation outlined the likelihood of widespread light to moderate rainfall alongside thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep and south Karnataka over the next seven days.</p>

Heatwave to intensify in north India, south to see rainfall: IMD, Climate Central warn

<p>Southwest Monsoon is likely to arrive over Kerala around May 31, setting the stage for the four-month rainfall season crucial for India's farm-based economy.</p>

<p>"This year, the Southwest Monsoon is likely to set over Kerala on May 31 with a model error of four days," the India Meteorological Department said on Wednesday.</p>

<p>"This is not early; it's close to the normal date," IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said.</p>

<p>The date of monsoon onset over Kerala has varied widely over the last 150 years, the earliest being May 11, 1918, and the most delayed being June 18, 1972, according to IMD data.</p>

<p>The rain-bearing system arrived in the southern state on June 8 last year, May 29 in 2022, June 3 in 2021 and June 1 in 2020.</p>

<p>Last month, the IMD had forecast above-normal rain in the monsoon season in India with favourable La Nina&nbsp;conditions expected to set in by August-September.</p>

<p>Parts of the country battled brutal heat in April, with maximum temperatures shattering records in several states and severely impacting health and livelihoods.</p>

<p>The crippling heat is straining power grids and drying up water bodies triggering drought-like conditions in parts of the country. A prediction of above-normal monsoonal rainfall, therefore, comes as a huge relief to the fast-developing South Asian nation.</p>

<p>The monsoon is critical for India's agricultural landscape, with 52 per cent of the net cultivated area relying on it. It is also crucial for replenishing reservoirs critical for drinking water, apart from power generation across the country.</p>

<p>June and July are considered the most important monsoon months for agriculture because most of the sowing for the Kharif crop takes place during this period.</p>
