"We found that's not the case—while their behaviour might shift slightly when they're high, our evidence indicates that they are not lazy or lacking in motivation at all."</p>

<p>In a series of trials, participants were given a choice: a simple task sorting numbers for a small payment, or a more complex math problem for a bigger reward. Interestingly, regardless of whether they were under the influence of cannabis or not, chronic cannabis users opted for the challenging task at similar rates.</p>

<p>According to a new study presented at the ESCMID Global Congress in Barcelona between April 27 and 30, patient toilets in UK hospitals have more contamination than staff toilets, of which women's bathrooms were the cleanest, while unisex and unisex-disabled toilets were the most contaminated.</p>

<p>The research team found harmful bacteria, fungi and multi-drug resistant germs lurking on the surfaces of toilets in UK hospitals, including floors, ceilings and door handles. They collected microbe samples from the toilets in three general hospitals in Lanarkshire in the United Kingdom. They swabbed several surfaces in six kinds of toilets - male and female for staff and patients and disabled and unisex, around four hours after being cleaned. These surfaces included the flush, handrails, door handles, faucets, floor, shelves, tops of doors and air vents.</p>

<p>After testing these samples, the research team discovered that most of these surfaces hosted dangerous bacteria, including <em>E. coli </em>and <em>Staphylococcus aureus</em>. They also had several species that cause infections in the bloodstream, chest, urinary tract and diseases like pneumonia. Most patient toilets had drug-resistant superbugs (strains of bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites that have grown resistant to medications commonly used to treat infections, like antibiotics).</p>

<p>Due to this evolved resistance, infections caused by superbugs can cause prolonged illnesses and more hospitalisations. For instance, <em>Staphylococcus aureus</em> has developed resistance against Methicilin and <em>Mycobacterium tuberculosis</em> is a multidrug-resistant superbug.</p>

<p>Stephanie Dancer, a consultant biologist at NHS Lanarkshire and study researcher, said, "Every type of toilet in all three hospitals receives the same cleaning (type and frequency) every day but given our findings, we think that patient toilets should be cleaned more often."</p>

<p>The unisex toilets were the most contaminated and had the highest levels of microbes on their surfaces. Bone health plays a vital role as there is higher risk of osteoporosis among women in postmenopausal women owing to lesser oestrogen levels and poor exposure to sunlight which is a source of Vitamin D.”</p>

<p>“Similarly, risk of autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus etc. is high among women for unknown reasons. Urinary tract infections and urinary incontinence (leak)are slightly higher among women due to differences in the anatomy. Also, sexual health is one more aspect which is often neglected.”</p>

<p>He said that raising awareness about gender specific health issues can help to streamline screening, diagnosis and treatment protocols in an efficient way.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Dr. Mohammed Afzal Siddiqui, Manipal Hospital Goa, wants the world to know that men are the weaker sex even though they are physically built stronger. He said, “Women tend to live longer than men and are more likely to suffer from diseases like chronic pain, UTI’s, migraines, multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, mental health disorders etc. Men live shorter and are more likely to develop chronic diseases and at a younger age than women."</p>

<p>"Men are more likely to develop cardiovascular diseases, Parkinson's disease, gout, renal stones, pancreatic cancers etc. Of the diseases that affect both genders but differently are heart attacks, sexually transmitted infections, migraines, hair fall, acne, mental health disorders etc. e.g. women are more likely to die of a heart attack than men, migraines are 3-4 times more common in women, depression, stress anxiety disorders are more common in women.”</p>

<p>There is enough research that shows that biological and social factors impact women's health differently from men, particularly in conditions like diabetes and heart disease. These unique challenges are influenced by biological, social, and environmental factors.&nbsp;<br />

<p>The problem perpetuates amongst women more because they internalise it more than men usually. Mental health differences arise because women don’t talk about it much which then leads to chronic debilitating conditions. <p>Ohio's Case Western Reserve University molecular biologist Erin Cohn and his colleagues looked into 1,823 compounds of unknown toxicity and discovered two types of chemicals which either killed or paused the maturation of cells known as oligodendrocytes under laboratory conditions.</p>

<p>Oligodendrocytes are a kind of neurological support cell. These cells wrap around the neurons to form an insulating covering which ensures that brain signals are moving at a speed.</p>

<h2><strong>What are the chemicals doing to brain cells?</strong></h2>

<p>The experts identified one of the two chemical classes as quaternary compounds, which are used in wipes, hand sanitisers, disinfectant spray and personal care products like toothpaste and mouthwash for killing bacteria and viruses. The users, while using these products, can ingest or inhale the chemicals.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The other chemical class identified was organophosphates. These chemicals, which serve as flame retardants, are commonly present in textiles, glues, and household items like electronics and furniture.</p>

<p>Humans can absorb the fat-soluble organophosphates through the skin which&nbsp;can then reach the brain.</p>

<p>In the experiments carried out on mice, an oral dose of one of three quaternary compounds was given to them and days later they found detectable levels of those chemicals in the brain tissue.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It was also found that less numbers of oligodendrocytes were present in the brains of the animals after they were administered 10 daily doses of one type of quaternary compound known as cetylpyridinium chloride. This was administered during the brain development's key period.</p>

<p>"We found that oligodendrocytes – but not other brain cells – are surprisingly vulnerable to quaternary ammonium compounds and organophosphate flame retardants," said Cohn.</p>

The experts identified one of the two chemical classes as quaternary compounds, which are used in wipes, hand sanitisers, disinfectant spray and personal care products like toothpaste and mouthwash for killing bacteria and viruses. The users, while using these products, can ingest or inhale the chemicals. The other chemical class identified was organophosphates. These chemicals, which serve as flame retardants, are commonly present in textiles, glues, and household items like electronics and furniture. Humans can absorb the fat-soluble organophosphates through the skin which can then reach the brain. It was also found that less numbers of oligodendrocytes were present in the brains of the animals after they were administered 10 daily doses of one type of quaternary compound known as cetylpyridinium chloride. This was administered during the brain development's key period. "We found that oligodendrocytes – but not other brain cells – are surprisingly vulnerable to quaternary ammonium compounds and organophosphate flame retardants," said Cohn.
