Two groups of mice were used in the study,&nbsp;young ones around four months old, and older ones aged around 18 months.&nbsp;

Some mice in each age group received a daily low dose of THC across a period of 28 days, and the effects were compared to age-matched controls.

The mice treated with THC showed a boost in mTOR activity in the brain and the production of more of the proteins necessary to form new synapses between neurons.

The mTOR activity in fat tissue dropped in the same way that it does with a calorie-controlled diet: In other words, the body starts to dial down some of its production processes in ways that have previously been shown to slow down biological ageing too, said a release on the study.

With just one shot, CDO-7N-1 was found to induce robust immune response in mice, hamsters and macaques, said its developers, who published their findings in Nature Communications journal on Monday (Aug 26).

The lab test animals were protected from SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, as well as its variants like beta, delta and omicron XBB.1.5, said the researchers.&nbsp;

“The vaccine induces strong memory responses in the nasal mucosa, offering long-term protection for up to a year or more. It’s been designed to be administered as single dose, ideally as a booster vaccine, as a safe alternative to needles with no adverse reactions in the short or long term,” he said.

This is a live-attenuated vaccine, meaning it contains the entire virus, thereby providing broad immunity, in contrast to a single antigen, which is used in many other vaccine platforms.

“Unlike the mRNA vaccine, which targets only the spike protein, CDO-7N-1 induces immunity to all major SARS-CoV-2 proteins and is highly effective against all major variants to date," said Liu.

“Importantly, the vaccine remains stable at 4°C for seven months, making it ideal for low- and middle-income countries.”

“For some people social media and gaming offer a lifesaving space. Games provide a space for people to connect, and to combat other feelings that exist in their lives such as loneliness, anxiety, and depression,” said Knibbs, a psychotherapist who specialises in cybertrauma and online harms.

She said people told her how their online communities make them feel like they are with people who understand them, see them and have the same interests.

The book, part of the new Ask The Experts in Psychology series in partnership with the British Psychological Society,&nbsp; says the first step is to understand the tricks that technology companies use to get you addicted to their apps and devices.

They "create products that deliberately tap into our innermost desires and needs so as to keep our attention on those products,” she says.

And those needs are the desire to be recognised, seen, valued, loved and needed, and the fear of missing out or FOMO.

5. Find out if your technology use is helpful and purposeful or not. Are you using this "in a mindful and purposeful way", so that you can feel more in control?

6. Notice the kinds of things that you seek out online, engage with, scroll past, or hover on

In a world-first, lung cancer vaccine trials have been launched in seven countries, which could revolutionise the way the deadly disease is treated, and possibly prevented.

Janusz Racz, 67, became the first patient in Britain to get the jab, which can kill lung cancer and prevent its recurrence.

The vaccine, called BNT116, is for treating the most common form of cancer: non-small cell lung cancer or NSCLC. The mRNA cancer immunotherapy for NSCLC, developed by BioNTech, was administered on Racz at University College London Hospital on Tuesday (Aug 20).&nbsp;

Baby food pouches, which grew in popularity by a whopping 900 per cent in the last 13 years, were also among the unhealthiest products assessed, with fewer than 7 per cent meeting total sugar recommendations.

While examining the food packaging, the study found bad marketing practices too. At least one prohibited claim was found in the packaging of 99.4 per cent products.

These claims included ‘non genetically modified’ (70 per cent), ‘organic’ (59 per cent), ‘no BPA’ (37 per cent), and ‘no artificial colours/flavours’ (25 per cent).

Casey Harrell, 45, used the brain-computer interface or BCI that interpreted his brain signals and turned them into text, which was then read by a computer, with 97 per cent accuracy, which makes this device the most accurate of its kind.

“Our BCI technology helped a man with paralysis to communicate with friends, families and caregivers,” said neurosurgeon David Brandman of University of California, Davis, where the experiment was conducted.

Brandman described it as "the most accurate speech neuroprosthesis (device) ever reported.”

Harrell used the system in both prompted and spontaneous conversational settings, a release from UC Davis said on Wednesday (Aug 15).

In both cases, speech decoding happened in real time, it said.

"The decoded words were shown on a screen and read aloud in a voice that sounded like Harrell’s before he had ALS. The voice was composed using software trained with existing audio samples of his pre-ALS voice," it said.

<h2>How the man with ALS was able to 'speak'</h2>

The 45-year's speech was hard to understand and he required others to help interpret for him.&nbsp;

For the experiment, sensors from the BCI were implanted in Harrel's&nbsp;brain in July 2023. These included four microelectrode arrays inserted in the part of his brain responsible for coordinating speech, which could record brain activity from 256 cortical electrodes.

The researchers essentially 'recorded' him from the part of the brain that’s trying to send commands to the muscles.

"We are basically listening into that, and we’re translating those patterns of brain activity into a phoneme — like a syllable or the unit of speech — and then the words they’re trying to say,” said neuroscientist Sergey Stavisky.&nbsp;“We’re really detecting their attempt to move their muscles and talk.”

The brain signals are then interpreted by machine-learning programmes in the device.

<h2>Why this is a breakthrough</h2>

The experiment offers hope for people who want to speak but can’t.

“Previous speech BCI systems had frequent word errors. This made it difficult for the user to be understood consistently and was a barrier to communication,” Brandman said. “Our objective was to develop a system that empowered someone to be understood whenever they wanted to speak.”&nbsp;

"The first time we tried the system, he cried with joy as the words he was trying to say correctly appeared on-screen. We all did," said neuroscientist Sergey Stavisky who was part of the study.

 
“At this point, we can decode what Casey is trying to say correctly about 97 per cent of the time,” Brandman said.&nbsp;

"The analysis revealed consistent nonlinear patterns in molecular markers of ageing, with substantial dysregulation occurring at two major periods occurring at approximately 44 years and 60 years of chronological age," said the study.&nbsp;

They found cardiovascular disease, lipid and alcohol metabolism changes at the 40-year transition, and shifts in "immune regulation and carbohydrate metabolism" during the 60-year transition.

Risk of diseases accelerate at specific points in human lifespan.

The study pointed out that in the US,&nbsp; atherosclerosis, stroke and heart attacks are are up 40% between the ages of 40 and 59. It rises to about 75% between ages 60 and 79 and reaches &nbsp;86% at 80 years and above.

Neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s have distinct "turning points" around the ages of 40 and 65, respectively.

Oropouche Virus Outbreak: Europe has reported first-ever cases of Oropouche infection, weeks after at least two women in Brazil died of the viral fever in the first-ever casualties of the tropical disease.

Health officials in Europe have issued travel warnings to tourists after cases of Oropoche have been reported in people returning from Brazil and Cuba.

There were at least 19 cases of Oropouche virus disease reported for the first time in Europe. Among these, 12 were in Spain, five in Italy and two in Germany. All these were imported cases, with 18 infected people having travelled to Cuba and one to Brazil.

Oropouche virus (OROV) disease is&nbsp;the most prevalent insect-borne viral disease in South America after Dengue virus.

OROV disease has been reported in South America, Central America and the Caribbean this year, mainly in Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Peru and Cuba.&nbsp;

There have been nearly 7,300 cases in Brazil in 2024 as against 832 last year.

Brazilian health officials have reported that Oropouche&nbsp;can be transmitted from mother to child, and was thought to be the cause of several birth defects and miscarriages in Brazil.

The newborn cartilage contained natural biopolymers - collagen II and proteoglycans- which enable pain-free mechanical resilience in joints, it said in a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The bioactive materials were used for driving the self-organisation of nanoscale fibres into bundles that mimic the natural architecture of cartilage, it said.

The goal was to create an attractive scaffold for the body’s own cells to regenerate cartilage tissue. Inspired by the "rage rooms" to pursue this study, first author Sophie Kjærvik, a communication scientist at Virginia Commonwealth University, wanted to debunk the theory of expressing anger to cope with it.

"We wanted to show that reducing arousal, and actually the physiological aspect of it, is really important," explained Kjærvik.&nbsp;

The team also focused on the cognitive aspects, examining cognitive behavioural therapy, which can be one way of defusing rage. However, they may not be effective for everyone.

It was discovered that arousal-boosting activities did not reduce anger, while some, like jogging, even increased it. Researchers suggest exertion may be more beneficial if the activity is fun like ball sports.

"It's really a battle because angry people want to vent, but our research shows that any good feeling we get from venting actually reinforces aggression," said Bushman.

The researchers found that while some people gradually get better from long COVID, in others the condition can persist for years. Many people who developed long COVID before the advent of vaccines are still unwell.

“Long COVID is a devastating disease with a profound human toll and socioeconomic impact,” said Janko Nikolich, MD, PhD, senior author of the paper, director of the Aegis Consortium at the U of A Health Sciences, professor and head of the Department of Immunobiology at the U of A College of Medicine – Tucson, and BIO5 Institute member.

“By studying it in detail, we hope to both understand the mechanisms and to find targets for therapy against this, but potentially also other infection-associated complex chronic conditions such as myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia.”

People can lower their risk of developing long COVID by avoiding infection – wearing a close-fitting mask in crowded indoor spaces, for example – taking antivirals promptly if they do catch COVID-19, avoiding strenuous exercise during such infections, and ensuring they are up to date with COVID vaccines and boosters.

“Long COVID is a dismal condition, but there are grounds for cautious optimism,” said Trisha Greenhalgh, lead author of the study and professor at Oxford’s Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences. “Various mechanism-based treatments are being tested in research trials. If proven effective, these would allow us to target particular subgroups of people with precision therapies. Treatments aside, it is becoming increasingly clear that long COVID places an enormous social and economic burden on individuals, families, and society. People can lower their risk of developing long COVID by avoiding infection – wearing a close-fitting mask in crowded indoor spaces, for example – taking antivirals promptly if they do catch COVID-19, avoiding strenuous exercise during such infections, and ensuring they are up to date with COVID vaccines and boosters. “Long COVID is a dismal condition, but there are grounds for cautious optimism,” said Trisha Greenhalgh, lead author of the study and professor at Oxford’s Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences. “Various mechanism-based treatments are being tested in research trials. If proven effective, these would allow us to target particular subgroups of people with precision therapies. Treatments aside, it is becoming increasingly clear that long COVID places an enormous social and economic burden on individuals, families, and society.
