Pope Francis cancelled at the last minute his attendance at the Good Friday procession at Rome's Colosseum, in what the Vatican described as a bid "to preserve his health" ahead of more Easter week engagements.

Francis' agenda for the next two days consists of an Easter Vigil service on Saturday evening and an Easter Mass and the twice-annual "Urbi et Orbi" (to the city and world) message and blessing on Sunday morning.

The 87-year-old's sudden no show is likely to renew concerns about his declining strength. Francis uses a cane or a wheelchair to move around due to a knee ailment, and suffers from repeated bouts of bronchitis and influenza.

Good Friday leads on Sunday to Easter, the most important and joyous date in the Church's liturgical calendar - commemorating the day Christians believe Jesus rose from the dead.

The Vatican announced the pope's absence from the "Via Crucis" (Way of the Cross) procession just as it was about to start, saying in a statement he would follow it remotely from his Vatican residence.

Francis, who had looked fitter this week after weeks in which he struggled to speak in public and cancelled some meetings, also missed the procession last year, after recovering from a four-day hospital stay for bronchitis.

<h2>Focus on women</h2>

The Via Crucis at the Colosseum is a re-enactment of Jesus' death by crucifixion, in which participants take turns in holding the cross as they walk in and around the ancient Roman arena, stopping to pray and hear meditations.

Nuns, priests, a hermit, charity workers, migrants and disabled people were among those who took part in the service, held in a landmark monument believed to have been a place of martyrdom for early Christians.

Francis personally wrote the meditations for this year, a first in his 11-year papacy. They included praises for meekness and forgiveness in response to acts of evil, and prayers for persecuted Christians and war victims.

The pope, who has called for the Church to become less male-dominated, also hailed the women who helped Jesus while he carried the cross, and pleaded for "those (women) who in our own day are exploited and endure injustice and indignity".

In another sign of his focus on women, Francis on Thursday performed the foot-washing ritual, which recalls Jesus' gesture of humility to his apostles at the Last Supper, in a women's prison in Rome.

Earlier on Friday, the pope joined cardinals and bishops for the Passion of the Lord service in St Peter's Basilica, which featured chants in Latin recounting events from Jesus' arrest to his burial.

In previous years, Francis would start the service prostrating himself on the floor of the basilica, but his frail state no longer allows him to do so. Instead, he arrived in a wheelchair and prayed silently in front of the main altar.

The family of a CRPF soldier from Odisha's Khurda district made a life-saving decision on Monday. Following his brain death, they chose to donate his heart and liver, to two individuals in need of organ transplants.

The soldier, Krushna Chandra Mahabhoi, served as a havildar in CRPF in Jammu and Kashmir. He was battling a chronic kidney disease and undergoing dialysis for two years.

Mahabhoi was declared brain-dead at a private hospital on March 20. &nbsp;Dr Alisha Choudhury of the private hospital said, “After his brain death, we sought permission from the family members for organ donation and they agreed. Subsequently, arrangements were made for that.”

The soldier's heart and liver were transported to Kolkata and Mumbai, respectively, offering a new lease of life to two individuals in critical need. Initially, the family was hesitant about doctors taking out Krushna Chandra Mahabhoi's organs, but his wife helped change the family's mind.

A brain tumor is the growth of abnormal cells in the brain or the area near it including nerves, pituitary gland, pineal gland, and membranes that cover the surface of the brain. Sometimes it can happen in the brain tissue as well. Brain tumours can be cancerous (malignant) or it can be non-cancerous (benign). However, both of them can be potentially life-threatening.

On the other hand, movement disorders refer to a cluster of neurological conditions that can either cause increased movements or decreased movements. For the unversed, brain tumours that are specifically affecting the brainstem, can sometimes cause various movement disorders.

Link between brain tumour and movement disorder

The link&nbsp;between brain tumours and movement disorders depends on the tumour's location in the brain and its impact on the surrounding areas. If the tumour has occurred in the cerebellum, it might interfere with the motor control resulting in tremors, stiffness or difficulty with coordination. Moreover, these tumours can put pressure on the brain tissues as well, which can further worsen the movement of the body. In these conditions, the healthcare professional needs to look after both tumour-related and movement-related symptoms.

Early Diagnosis &amp; Treatment

Brain tumours and movement disorders are diagnosed with a physical and neurological exam. On the basis of the symptoms, the medical expert may perform blood tests, radiological investigations like MRI and/or CT scan, electromyography (to check muscle strength), electroencephalogram (to check the electrical system of the brain) etc.&nbsp;Moreover, a biopsy can also be done to differentiate between nerve and muscle conditions.&nbsp;
Treatment for different brain tumours totally depends on the symptoms, size and location of the tumour in the brain.&nbsp;

Some of the treatment options include:

•&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Microscopic brain surgery: The most common treatment for brain tumours is surgery where the cancer cells are removed without causing any damage to the healthy parts of the brain. However, the removal of cancer cells completely depends upon the location of where the tumour is located in the brain. These surgeries are usually done under microscopic and Neuronavigation guidance at dedicated neurosurgical centres

•&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Awake craniotomy: It is a type of procedure performed on the brain tumour while you are awake. In this treatment, a small opening is done in your skull which allows access to the brain. However, the patient is under anaesthesia but the medical expert may ask certain questions to monitor the activities in the brain.&nbsp;

•&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Radiation therapy: This treatment uses powerful energy beams to kill the tumour cells in the brain. However, each beam is not much powerful but the point where the beams meet gets a large dose of radiation that eventually kills the tumor cells. &nbsp;

•&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Chemotherapy: Here strong medicines are used to kill the tumor cells. In this therapy, the medicines can be either taken in the form of pills or can be injected into the veins. Sometimes, the medicine is injected into the brain tissue while performing surgery.&nbsp;

Understanding the link between brain tumour and movement disorder

India's tech industry, a jewel of the nation's economic rise, is flickering with a hidden illness.

A recent study by Onsurity, a leading employee healthcare platform, in collaboration with the Knowledge Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), exposes a troubling reality.

Titled&nbsp;Burying the Burnout: Decoding the Health Challenges of India's Tech Geniuses,&nbsp;the study reveals that 43 per cent of Indian tech professionals grappling with work-related health issues.

What’s the root of the problem?

Long work hours, a relentless beast plaguing the industry.

As per the study, over 50 per cent&nbsp;of tech professionals in India are stuck to their desks for an average of 52.5 hours weekly, in contrast to the national average of 47.7 hours.

Consequently, a major 55 per cent of these professionals report that these extended hours are ruining their health.

From digestive woes like acidity and gut problems to musculoskeletal issues like back and neck pain, the consequences are widespread.

Disrupted sleep cycles, muscle stiffness, eyesight problems, weight gain, and frequent headaches are just a few additions to this concerning list.

Mental health under siege

Mental health takes an even harsher beating in this demanding environment.

Nearly half (45 per cent) of tech professionals surveyed confessed to battling stress, anxiety, and depression.

Sleep, a crucial pillar of well-being, crumbles under the pressure.

Over a quarter (26 per cent) experience sleep disturbances, with more than half (51 per cent) averaging a meagre 5.5 to 6 hours of nightly rest.

The impact spills over into personal lives as well, with 74 per cent of tech professionals forced to sacrifice family time and important celebrations due to unrelenting work demands.

A wake-up call for tech companies

Yogesh Agarwal, Founder and CEO of Onsurity, sounded the alarm.

"As India's tech muscle propels our economic growth, nurturing the environment where these professionals thrive becomes paramount," he said.

"Ignoring the daily struggles of our workforce not only makes tech jobs less appealing but also hinders the true potential of these bright minds. Our findings are a wake-up call for tech companies. We need a significant shift, with well-being placed at the forefront for these crucial teams."

Rethinking Employee Well-being: A business imperative

Is Indian tech talent burning out? Here’s what’s wrecking employee health

The period immediately following childbirth, known as the postpartum period, typically lasts around two months. It is common for women to experience joint pain in various parts of their body during this time. This pain can affect any joint, including the lower back, knees, hips, and hands, and may be accompanied by stiffness, swelling, and redness. It is important to understand that while these symptoms may make one feel older suddenly, they are often the result of hormonal changes and the physical strain of childbirth.

Causes of Postpartum Joint Pain

One of the primary reasons mothers experience joint pain after childbirth is the weight gain that occurs during pregnancy. As the body adjusts to carrying the baby, which increases in weight over time, it can lead to discomfort as the body returns to its pre-pregnancy state. Additionally, mothers who have previously experienced injuries to the joints or tailbone may experience more severe joint pain postpartum. Increased fluid retention during pregnancy can also contribute to pain in the finger joints while carrying the baby can put pressure on the knees.

New mothers need to take care of their bodies to ensure they can provide the best care for their babies. In a conversation with WION,&nbsp;Dr Ashutosh Jha,&nbsp;Consultant Orthopedic at Manipal Hospital in Ghaziabad, shared 3 essential tips for maintaining bone health postpartum. Take a look!

Tips for Maintaining Healthy Bones Postpartum

1. Maintain a Healthy Diet: Consuming calcium-rich foods can help keep bones strong and healthy. Some studies suggest that vitamin K promotes bone density and should be included in the diet. It is advisable to avoid caffeine during this period.

2. Regular Exercise: Engaging in light exercise can help keep the body active. Yoga is particularly beneficial as it promotes both physical and mental well-being. However, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional before starting any exercise routine.

3. Consult a Healthcare Professional: If a woman experiences severe joint pain after delivery, she should consult a healthcare professional. This pain could indicate an underlying condition that requires further treatment. The healthcare professional may conduct tests to assess bone density and recommend appropriate treatment.

By taking these steps, new mothers can help maintain their bone health and overall well-being during the postpartum period.

A recent study, published in the journal The Lancet predicts that the number of children born to women globally will keep dropping, leading to a significant change in the world's population makeup.

A recent study, published in the journal The Lancet predicts that the number of children born to women globally will keep dropping, leading to a significant change in the world's population makeup. Since 1950, fertility rates have been going down worldwide, from 4.84 children per woman to 2.23 in 2021. According to the study which is based on the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 by 2100, the fertility rate is expected to go down even further to 1.59. Why are the fertility rates decreasing? The factors that contribute to the decreasing rates include: Increased education and job opportunities for women Better access to contraception Changing views on family size Cost of raising children How will the decreasing fertility rates impact the world? To maintain stable population numbers, countries need a fertility rate of 2.1 children per woman which is known as replacement level. Once the rates drop below this level, the population size starts to shrink. By 2100, nearly all countries (97%) are projected to have fertility rates below replacement level, leading to population declines globally. Currently, 46% of countries have a fertility rate below the replacement level. Since the decline is not even, the world will face a demographic divide with high-income countries that have low fertility rates, facing challenges with aging population and workforce shortages, and low-income regions seeing a rise in births, straining resources. Dr. Teresa Castro Martín, a professor at the Institute of Economics, Geography, and Demography of the Spanish National Research Council told CNN, “An important contribution of the study is to highlight the demographic contrast between the richest countries (with very low fertility) and the poorest countries (with still high fertility).” While a shrinking population may reduce strain on resources and carbon emissions, increased consumption per capita could offset these gains. How to combat the demographic divide? While immigration encouragement and technological innovations could ease economic impacts. Pro-natal policies such as childcare subsidies, extended parental leave and tax incentives show limited effectiveness in boosting fertility rates. “There is a real threat in some governments trying to pressure women to have more children. “It’s very easy to go from encouraging women to have more children to being a little bit more coercive,” Dr. Christopher Murray, senior author of the study told CNN.

Pregnancy is a transformative journey, and ensuring a healthy, full-term pregnancy is essential for the well-being of both the mother and the baby. Preterm birth, defined as childbirth before 37 weeks of pregnancy completion, can pose risks to the infant's health and development. Over one in 10 births globally in 2020 were preterm, with an estimated 13.4 million babies born before their due date. These early arrivals confront serious health issues.

Speaking exclusively to WION, Dr Mangla Gowri K, Chief Fertility Specialist &amp; Centre Head of Santaan Bengaluru, shared four strategies to prevent preterm birth. Take a look!

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Nutritious Diet

A well-balanced and nutritious diet is fundamental for a healthy pregnancy. A variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and dairy products provide essential nutrients such as folic acid, iron, and calcium. Adequate hydration is equally important. Consult with a healthcare professional to tailor the diet to individual needs.

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Regular Exercise

Physical activity during pregnancy offers numerous benefits, including improved mood, reduced discomfort, and enhanced overall well-being. Engaging in moderate exercise, such as walking or swimming, can contribute to a healthy pregnancy. Always consult with a healthcare provider before starting or modifying an exercise routine.

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Avoiding Harmful Substances

Steering clear of harmful substances is paramount. This includes avoiding tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs. Smoking and substance abuse significantly increase the risk of preterm birth and can have detrimental effects on foetal development. If assistance is needed to quit these habits, seeking support from healthcare professionals is advised.

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Managing Stress

Chronic stress during pregnancy may contribute to preterm birth. Implementing stress-reducing techniques, such as prenatal yoga, meditation, or deep breathing exercises, can promote emotional well-being. Open communication with loved ones and seeking support when needed are also crucial aspects of stress management.

Preterm labour can be avoided or postponed using a variety of medical procedures, which also assist the unborn child to become ready for life outside the womb. Speaking exclusively to WION, Dr Mangla Gowri K, Chief Fertility Specialist & Centre Head of Santaan Bengaluru, shared four strategies to prevent preterm birth. Take a look! ● Nutritious Diet A well-balanced and nutritious diet is fundamental for a healthy pregnancy. A variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and dairy products provide essential nutrients such as folic acid, iron, and calcium. Adequate hydration is equally important. Consult with a healthcare professional to tailor the diet to individual needs. ● Regular Exercise Physical activity during pregnancy offers numerous benefits, including improved mood, reduced discomfort, and enhanced overall well-being. Engaging in moderate exercise, such as walking or swimming, can contribute to a healthy pregnancy. Always consult with a healthcare provider before starting or modifying an exercise routine. Also read: Pregnancy and kidney health: All you need to know ● Avoiding Harmful Substances Steering clear of harmful substances is paramount. This includes avoiding tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs. Smoking and substance abuse significantly increase the risk of preterm birth and can have detrimental effects on foetal development. If assistance is needed to quit these habits, seeking support from healthcare professionals is advised. ● Managing Stress Chronic stress during pregnancy may contribute to preterm birth. Preventive measures, maintaining a healthy weight and nutrition, and managing stress are some of the strategies to lower the risk of premature labour. Medical expert reveals how pregnant women can reduce risk of premature birth

In a recent study published in eClinicalMedicine, researchers delved into the intricate relationship between smoking habits and the likelihood of experiencing a stroke. This comprehensive investigation shed light on how various aspects of smoking behavior influenced the risk of stroke occurrence.

The study revealed that individuals who were current smokers faced a significantly elevated risk of suffering from a stroke compared to those who had never smoked. This risk was particularly pronounced for ischaemic strokes, which occurred when blood flow to the brain was obstructed. Collaborating on this international study were researchers from St John's Medical College and Research Institute in Bengaluru.

<h2>Impact of different smoking habits</h2>

Both filtered and non-filtered cigarette consumption were found to be associated with increased stroke risk. Additionally, exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) for more than 10 hours per week was identified as a significant risk factor, nearly doubling the likelihood of experiencing a stroke, particularly ischaemic and intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) strokes, which resulted from bleeding within the brain due to a ruptured blood vessel.

The study highlighted that among individuals under 50 years of age who smoked heavily (more than 20 cigarettes per day), the risk of stroke more than doubled, surpassing the increase observed in participants aged 70 and above. Furthermore, for those aged 50-59, there was an eightfold increase in the risk of large vessel stroke, affecting major blood vessels supplying the brain.

Analysis of data from 32 countries across various income levels revealed regional disparities in stroke risk among current smokers. Western European and North American regions exhibited the highest risk. Interestingly, regardless of income level, the risk was higher in high-income countries (HICs) compared to low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), with younger smokers facing a heightened risk compared to older individuals. Moreover, the risk escalated with the number of cigarettes smoked per day, particularly in HICs.

The findings of this study shed light on the importance of global initiatives aimed at curbing tobacco use and exposure. To mitigate stroke risk associated with smoking, the researchers advocated for preventive measures targeting youth initiation prevention and smoking cessation support for current smokers. Additionally, legislative actions to establish and promote smoke-free environments were recommended.

Notable regional disparities in smoking prevalence were observed, with around 46 per cent&nbsp;of young men in South East Asia reported as current smokers, while over 16 per cent&nbsp;of young females in Eastern/Central Europe and the Middle East were identified as current smokers.

Passive smoking exposure nearly doubles stroke risk, new study says

Sleep equity refers to the fair distribution of opportunities and resources that enable individuals to obtain adequate and high-quality sleep. It encompasses various factors, including access to safe and comfortable sleeping environments, sufficient time for rest, education about sleep hygiene and disorders, and support for addressing sleep-related issues.

Sleep issues are a pervasive challenge worldwide, affecting individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life. From insomnia and sleep apnea to societal pressures and modern lifestyle habits, various factors contribute to disrupted sleep patterns and diminished sleep quality. However, by understanding the root causes of these issues and implementing effective strategies, we can work towards overcoming them and fostering a world where restful sleep is accessible to all.

World Sleep Day was initiated by the World Association of Sleep Medicine (WASM) in 2008. It aims to raise awareness about sleep disorders and the importance of good sleep for good health.

One of the primary contributors to sleep issues is the prevalence of stress and anxiety in modern society. Pressures from work, relationships, and personal responsibilities can lead to heightened levels of stress, making it difficult for individuals to unwind and achieve restful sleep. To address this, it's essential to prioritise stress management techniques such as mindfulness, meditation, and relaxation exercises. Creating a bedtime routine that includes calming activities can signal to the body that it's time to wind down, promoting better sleep quality.

Another significant factor contributing to sleep issues is the widespread use of electronic devices, particularly before bedtime. The blue light emitted by screens can disrupt the body's natural sleep-wake cycle, making it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep. To mitigate this, individuals should establish a "digital curfew" and limit screen time in the hour leading up to bedtime. Additionally, implementing technology-free zones in the bedroom can help create a conducive environment for sleep.

Moreover, environmental factors such as noise pollution, uncomfortable sleeping conditions, and irregular sleep schedules can also contribute to sleep disturbances. Addressing these issues may involve investing in soundproofing measures, optimising bedroom temperature and lighting, and establishing consistent sleep routines.

Additionally, advocating for policies that prioritise sleep-friendly urban planning and workplace accommodations can help create environments that support healthy sleep habits.

Just like financial equity aims for the fair distribution of wealth and resources, sleep equity emphasises the importance of ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their socioeconomic status, geographical location, or other factors, have equal opportunities to attain optimal sleep health. This concept recognises that disparities in sleep quality and duration can contribute to health inequalities and impact overall well-being and productivity. Therefore, efforts to promote sleep equity may involve advocating for policies and initiatives that address underlying factors such as work schedules, living conditions, healthcare access, and societal attitudes towards sleep.

World Sleep Day 2024: The importance of sleep equity for better health

Kidneys are vital organs responsible for filtering waste products, regulating blood pressure, and maintaining electrolyte balance in the body. During pregnancy, the kidneys work even harder to eliminate waste products from both the mother and the developing baby. This increased workload can put additional strain on the kidneys, especially for women with pre-existing kidney conditions.

Physiological Changes During Pregnancy

Pregnancy brings about significant physiological changes that affect kidney function. These include:

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Increased blood volume: The body's blood volume increases by up to 30%–50% during pregnancy to support the growing fetus. This puts additional strain on the kidneys to filter the extra volume.

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Hormonal changes: Pregnancy hormones, especially progesterone, lead to heightened levels of progesterone which diminish ureteral peristalsis. This reduction in peristalsis causes dilation of the ureter above the pelvic brim. This natural physiological process, known as hydronephrosis, can result in urine stagnation, potentially increasing the risk of stone formation and complicating diagnosis, as we will explore further.

Risks Associated with Kidney Disease in Pregnancy

While most women with healthy kidneys experience normal pregnancies, those with pre-existing kidney disease require close monitoring and specialised care. Pre-existing conditions like chronic kidney disease (CKD) can increase the risk of complications for both mother and baby, such as:

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Preeclampsia: A pregnancy complication characterised by high blood pressure and signs of damage to other organ systems, such as the kidneys.

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Preterm birth: The baby is born prior to completing 37 weeks of gestation.

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Low birth weight: Babies born weighing less than 2.5 kg (5.5 pounds).

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Increased maternal mortality: The risk of death for the mother due to pregnancy complications.

Importance of Early Detection and Management

Early detection and management of pre-existing kidney disease are crucial for improving pregnancy outcomes. Women with known kidney disease should consult their healthcare provider before getting pregnant to discuss the potential risks and necessary precautions. Regular prenatal care, including blood pressure monitoring and kidney function tests, is essential for managing kidney health during pregnancy.

Optimising Kidney Health During Pregnancy

Even for women without pre-existing kidney conditions, certain measures can help optimise kidney health during pregnancy:

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Maintaining a healthy weight: Obesity can increase the risk of kidney complications during pregnancy.

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Following a balanced diet: Consuming a nutritious diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains while limiting processed foods and added sugars can support overall health and kidney function.

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Staying hydrated: Drinking plenty of water throughout the day helps the kidneys flush out waste products effectively.

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Managing blood pressure: High blood pressure can strain the kidneys more. Working with a healthcare provider to manage blood pressure effectively is crucial.

●&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol: These habits can worsen kidney function and increase the risk of complications during pregnancy.

By raising awareness, promoting early detection and management of pre-existing conditions, and practising healthy habits, we can work towards ensuring optimal health for both mothers and babies during pregnancy and beyond.

The lowest risk of early death, according to the study, was among people who take between 9,000 to 10,500 steps every day; it also cuts the risk of early death by 39 per cent and the risk of a heart attack or stroke by more than a fifth. The halfway point for both lowered the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and early death, as per the research was somewhere between 4,000 and 4,500 steps a day. “This is by no means a get out of jail card for people who are sedentary for excessive periods of time,” said lead author of the study and research fellow, Dr Matthew Ahmadi, in a statement. He added, “However, it does hold an important public health message that all movement matters and that people can and should try to offset the health consequences of unavoidable sedentary time by upping their daily step count.” (With inputs from agencies)

Is your relationship with your family affecting your mental health? Here's what you should do

Fibre is primarily needed to&nbsp;maintain&nbsp;good digestive health and overall well-being. However, in a study recently published in Nature Communications, researchers from the School of Life Course &amp; Population Sciences have uncovered that fibre can be used to enhance brain function in old-aged individuals.&nbsp;

The study, led by Dr Mary Ni Lochlainn from the Department of Twin Research, has unveiled the cognitive benefits of incorporating a daily fibre supplement into the diets of individuals over 60. The study suggested that "inducing gut microbiota changes may alter both muscle physiology and cognitive behaviour. Gut microbiota may play a role in both anabolic resistance of older muscle, and cognition."

"We are excited to see these changes in just 12 weeks. This holds huge promise for enhancing brain health and memory in our aging population. Unlocking the secrets of the gut-brain axis could offer new approaches for living more healthily for longer," Dr Ni Lochlainn reportedly said.

The study, conducted at TwinsUK, the UK's largest adult twin registry based at King's College London, aimed to explore the impact of two commonly available plant fibre supplements, inulin and FOS, on both muscle health and brain function.

Researchers enlisted 36 pairs of twin pairs, totaling 72 participants, aged over 60 for the double-blind trial. Each twin pair was randomised&nbsp;to receive either placebo or prebiotic daily.&nbsp;

The researchers found that the fibre supplement led to changes in the participants' gut microbiome composition. This was especially seen with an increase in beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacterium.&nbsp;

While the supplements showed no significant effect on muscle strength, they demonstrated remarkable improvements in cognitive function, as evidenced by better performance in memory tests associated with early signs of Alzheimer's disease.

The&nbsp;finding highlighted the potential of these inexpensive and readily available supplements in combating age-related cognitive decline.

Daily fibre supplement may boost brain function in people over 60: Study

Birth defects can affect around 3 to 4 per cent of pregnancies, ranging from mild to severe and potentially life-threatening conditions. These defects can arise from genetic, environmental, or multifactorial causes. One of the most common genetic birth defects is Down syndrome, characterised by an extra chromosome 21 and associated with mental retardation, delayed development, congenital heart issues, and more. This condition can be detected through ultrasound and specialised blood tests during pregnancy.

Heart defects are another significant category of birth defects, ranging from mild cases that may require oxygen post-birth to complex issues like transposition of great vessels or septal defects, sometimes necessitating major surgery.

Cleft lip and cleft palate are also birth defects that may require surgical interventions.

Spina bifida, an abnormality of the spinal cord, presents a defect in spinal fusion. Symptoms and prognosis vary depending on the extent of spinal cord and nerve involvement.

Hydrocephalus, a brain defect where fluid accumulates in the brain cavities, can cause pressure symptoms. Treatment often involves the use of shunts.

Clubfoot, a condition where the foot remains twisted with a high arch, usually requires intensive physiotherapy and occasionally minor surgery but is not life-threatening.

Urinary tract anomalies, such as pelvi calyceal dilatation and posterior urethral valves, are common. While pelvi calyceal dilatation typically resolves after delivery, some cases may require antibiotics or surgery. Posterior urethral valves can lead to severe hydronephrosis and bladder issues.

Congenital dislocation of the hip can cause walking difficulties in babies and may require braces or surgery.

Folic acid supplementation before conception can reduce the risk of neural tube defects. A healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals is recommended while smoking, alcohol, and drug use should be avoided.

Consult with a healthcare provider regarding preconception and pregnancy medications. Vaccinations and blood sugar control should also be addressed before conception.

Pressed by parents to pose in videos with make-up and skincare products, pre-teen girls dubbed "Sephora Kids" have taken TikTok by storm in a trend that some specialists brand a danger to children's mental and physical health.

American girls between the ages of eight and 12 are gaining thousands of followers on the video platform by modelling their make-up purchases.

The trend focuses particularly on products from the French high-street brand Sephora, championed by reality TV star Kim Kardashian's daughter, North West.

Gushing over pots of moisturiser or begging their parents to buy them anti-wrinkle cream, they pose in front of the mirror with their hair tied back, aping popular grown-up make-up tutorials.

Skin specialists warned that some of the products used in the kids' videos contain ingredients not suited to young skin, such as retinol.

Sephora, which is part of the LVMH luxury group, did not respond to requests to comment from AFP.

TikTok make-up influencers spark health warnings

United States President Joe Biden said that his annual medical examination ended well on Wednesday (Feb 28) as he joked about how doctors felt that he looked too young.&nbsp;

This came at a time when there has been increasing scrutiny over his old age as he plans to fight the November elections.

The White House informed that a summary of the test results will be released by the Walter Reed military medical facility outside Washington later.&nbsp;

"They think I look too young," Biden said to the reporters when speaking about the medical exam.

"No, there is nothing different from last year," when the exam results declared him fit for duty, added Biden, while speaking at the White House.&nbsp;

Biden took a helicopter ride to reach the medical centre where he spent just over two and a half hours. He exited the medical centre donning sunglasses and saluted the naval officers before leaving in his motorcade.

The White House claimed that Biden's longtime doctor, Kevin O'Connor was "happy with how everything went", and added that the assessment included a team of 20 physicians.

<h2>No&nbsp;cognitive test for Biden</h2>

Defending Biden for not taking a cognitive test, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said that his doctors assessed that the president is not required to go through one.

"The president passes&nbsp;a cognitive test every day," said Jean-Pierre while speaking to the reporters and referring to the domestic and international political issues he deals with. "This is a very rigorous job," he said.

The routine medical examination of Biden took place at a time when concerns had been mounting over the leader's age.

The issue came under the spotlight after Biden was portrayed as elderly and forgetful in a special counsel report which gave a major boost to his Republican rivals.

In the investigation, he was cleared of illegally retaining classified documents in his garage and home, but added that he would come across to a jury as a "well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory."

In a fierce counterattack to the investigation in a press conference at the White House, Biden said that his memory was "fine" and slammed the special counsel for saying that he does not remember when his son Beau died of cancer.

Meanwhile, speaking in an interview with late-night TV comic Seth Meyers on Monday (Feb 26), Biden claimed that he was a better bet than "the other guy," who is just four years younger than him.&nbsp;

"The president passes a cognitive test every day," said Jean-Pierre while speaking to the reporters and referring to the domestic and international political issues he deals with. "This is a very rigorous job," he said. The routine medical examination of Biden took place at a time when concerns had been mounting over the leader's age. Watch: US: 81-year-old Joe Biden 'fit for job' says White House doctor; age a top worry for voters The issue came under the spotlight after Biden was portrayed as elderly and forgetful in a special counsel report which gave a major boost to his Republican rivals. In the investigation, he was cleared of illegally retaining classified documents in his garage and home, but added that he would come across to a jury as a "well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory." In a fierce counterattack to the investigation in a press conference at the White House, Biden said that his memory was "fine" and slammed the special counsel for saying that he does not remember when his son Beau died of cancer. Meanwhile, speaking in an interview with late-night TV comic Seth Meyers on Monday (Feb 26), Biden claimed that he was a better bet than "the other guy," who is just four years younger than him. Chronic neck pain, described as persistent discomfort lasting for more than three months, can significantly impact daily life and indicate serious underlying health problems. While occasional neck pain is common and often resolves on its own, chronic neck pain can be a sign of more serious conditions such as cervical degenerative disc disease, cervical herniated disc, or cervical spinal stenosis. Ignoring chronic neck pain can lead to worsening symptoms, decreased mobility, and reduced quality of life.

Dr Srivatsan TV, Neurosurgeon at VPS Lakeshore Hospital, says, "The neck, or cervical spine, is a complex structure composed of bones, shock-absorbing discs, nerves, and muscles working in harmony. Any disruption in this intricate system can lead to chronic neck pain. While occasional discomfort is common and can be attributed to various factors such as poor posture or muscle strain, persistent pain should not be dismissed lightly."

The medical expert continues, "Chronic neck pain can be indicative of underlying issues that require professional attention. Degenerative conditions like cervical spondylosis, herniated discs, or spinal stenosis may all be the causes. Ignoring persistent pain may allow these conditions to progress, potentially leading to irreversible damage and decreased quality of life."

"The neck houses a critical part of the central nervous system – the spinal cord. When chronic neck pain is left untreated, it can exert pressure on the spinal cord and surrounding nerves, resulting in a myriad of neurological symptoms, which may include tingling, numbness, weakness of the hands and legs, or radiating pain down the arms. If left untreated, chronic pressure over the spinal cord can lead to irreversible paralysis. Timely intervention is crucial to prevent permanent neurological damage,"&nbsp;Dr Srivatsan states.

So how does this impact one’s daily life?

The consequences of chronic neck pain extend beyond the physical realm, affecting various aspects of daily life. Simple tasks like turning the head, driving, or even sleeping become challenging. Persistent pain can also contribute to mental health issues such as anxiety and depression and affect social life.

Posture, Posture, Posture

Poor posture is a common culprit behind chronic neck pain. In an era dominated by sedentary lifestyles and prolonged screen time, individuals often underestimate the importance of maintaining proper posture. "As a neurosurgeon, I emphasise the need for ergonomic adjustments in workspaces and daily activities to alleviate undue stress on the cervical spine. The newest cause for neck pain, the so-called 'Tech Neck', is seen in people using the computer for long hours,"&nbsp;&nbsp;Dr Srivatsan shares.

The medical expert also highlighted that chronic neck pain can trigger changes in the spine structure, leading to secondary issues such as tension headaches. Tense muscles in the neck and shoulders can radiate pain upward, manifesting as persistent headaches. Addressing the root cause – neck pain – is essential for breaking this cycle and achieving long-term relief.

When to seek professional help?

From a neurosurgeon's perspective, early intervention is paramount when it comes to chronic neck pain. Timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment can prevent the progression of underlying conditions, and minimise the risk of neurological complications.

"Individuals experiencing chronic neck pain should not hesitate to seek the expertise of healthcare professionals, including neurosurgeons. A thorough examination, imaging studies, and diagnostic tests can help identify the underlying cause of the pain, guiding the development of a personalised treatment plan,"&nbsp;Dr Srivatsan asserts. "I, myself, have witnessed the life-changing power of early treatment in preserving spinal health and preventing long-term complications so I suggest the same to my patients."

Chronic neck pain should never be underestimated or ignored. By acknowledging the importance of addressing chronic neck pain promptly, individuals can reclaim their quality of life and avoid the potentially irreversible consequences of neglecting this silent alarm.

Why chronic neck pain should not be ignored: Expert explains

Bile duct cancer develops when abnormal cells in the bile ducts undergo DNA changes, leading to the development of a tumour. Bile ducts carry bile from the liver to the gallbladder and intestines, leading to digestion. Bile duct cancer can obstruct the flow of bile, and lead to obstructive jaundice which can have high fatality. In its early stages, it can be challenging to distinguish from other health issues, resulting in delayed diagnosis and treatment.

Early detection and awareness are important for all types of cancer. Techniques such as endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and cholangioscopy can help identify bile cancer. Although bile duct cancer is rare, it is curable if detected early.&nbsp;

Early signs and symptoms of bile duct cancer

Some early warning signs that are often overlooked include:

•&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Abdominal discomfort: This symptom commonly occurs on the right side of the abdomen, just below the rib(s), and is often associated with digestive ailments such as gastritis, acidity or gallstones, potentially delaying recognition of underlying bile duct cancer.

•&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Severe jaundice: Yellowing of the skin and eyes is frequently misinterpreted as symptoms of liver disease or hepatitis, yet it could indicate a more serious condition. It's advised to seek medical assistance to mitigate all potential threats. Simple tests like Sonography &amp; LFT can diagnose it properly.

•&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Pale stools: Light-coloured stools may be associated with dietary factors or issues like gallbladder dysfunction, diverting our attention from the possibility of cancer.

•&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Unexpected weight loss:&nbsp;Sudden weight loss is often associated with thyroid problems or diabetes, however, it is also a major symptom of bile duct cancer.

•&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;Itchiness in some parts of the body: Another sign of bile duct cancer can be itchiness and you must consult a physician if you experience it frequently, even if it is a simple rash that is not healing.

Other symptoms may include sudden tiredness or a fever that won't go away.

A new study has found that a fasting-mimicking diet (FMD) can potentially improve the quality of your life and extend it.

As per research published in the journal Nature, FMD can "protect normal cells while killing damaged cells including cancer and autoimmune cells, reduce inflammation, promote multi-system regeneration, and extend longevity."

<h2>What is a fasting-mimicking diet (FMD)?</h2>

As per US News, a fasting-mimicking diet is a less challenging way to diet that does not require a person to completely forego food. Instead, it involves a low-calorie diet that is designed to mimic water-only fasting.

It effectively tricks your body into thinking it is fasting. FMD is usually observed for five days. The diet was developed by the laboratory of USC Leonard Davis School Professor Valter Longo.&nbsp;

Citing Kristine Dilley, a registered dietitian at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, the publication reports that, while observing FMD, a person should follow the following diet approach:

On day 1, consume 1,100 calories, of which around 11 per cent comes from protein, 46 per cent is fat and 43 per cent carbohydrates.

From Day 2 to Day 4, consume just about 725 calories — nine per cent protein, 44 per cent fat and 47 per cent carbs.

Here the focus is on a diet that is low-calorie, low-protein, low-carbohydrate and high in unsaturated fats.

Throughout users must consume a minimum of 70 ounces (around 2.1 litres) of water. For optimal results, users are recommended to follow the diet once a month, three times.&nbsp;

<h2>Study results</h2>

As part of the current study, participants were asked to follow a diet majorly consisting of plant-based foods along with supplements providing high levels of minerals, vitamins, and essential fatty acids.&nbsp;

Data from clinical trials revealed evidence that FMD cycles may benefit various aspects of health, including reduced fat, potentially lowering the risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and cardiovascular issues. It also helped restore glucose levels and decrease insulin resistance, while leading to a more youthful immune system.

Three FMD cycles were found to incur significant benefits, including a decrease in biological age by an average of 2.5 years, independent of weight loss.

Furthermore, by combining biological age with chronological age, the study suggests FMD could increase predicted life expectancy. However, these findings require further research.

Diet that mimics fasting can increase your life, finds study. Here's what it means

Sudden death syndrome (SDS) is when death unexpectedly occurs from natural causes within an hour of the onset of symptoms, as per the World Health Organization (WHO).

SDS and sudden cardiac death (SCD), also referred to as sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), are terms that people may use interchangeably.

SCD refers to death from heart failure that occurs within an hour of any cardiovascular etiology.

SDS and SCD have lately become interchangeable terms. While many different diseases can lead to a fatal chain reaction in the body, SCD is a common cause.

A major review published in the year&nbsp;2022 found that up to 73% of unforeseen deaths are related to cardiovascular problems. This is contrasted with other illnesses such as intracerebral hemorrhage, asthma, and epilepsy.

There isn't a set list of symptoms when it comes to SDS. Since SDS is not a single sickness or ailment, the underlying cause can have a major impact on any symptoms that may exist.

Subtle warning indicators of different illnesses that can cause SDS may exist. For instance, a person may misdiagnose symptoms of cerebral aneurysm for common pain like a severe headache or stiff neck.

<h2>Causes of SDS</h2>

The body goes through many recognised and unknown mechanisms that can lead to SDS. However, cardiovascular disease is a significant factor, according to Medical News Today.

SADS and coronary artery disease are two of the most prevalent underlying causes. Up to 80% of deaths from sickle cell disease may be caused by coronary artery disease. A large-scale cohort research found that 53% of SCD cases that were evaluated had SADS.

<h2>Risk factors for SDS</h2>

The multitude of diseases that might cause SDS means that each risk factor is unique.

Because SCD is the most common cause of SDS, its risk factors are heavy alcohol consumption, tobacco use, physical inactivity, obesity, high blood pressure, and a family history of SCD among others.

<h2>Steps for prevention</h2>

SDS may be prevented through chronic disease management and changes in lifestyle.

For instance, medical interventions and lifestyle changes can lower the risk of cardiovascular events in those who are at high risk.&nbsp;
