Coca-Cola on Monday (Jan 27) issued an urgent recall of some of its most popular beverages across Europe, including Coke, Sprite, and Fanta after tests revealed alarming levels of chlorate contamination.
The affected drinks, sold in cans and glass bottles, have been distributed in Belgium, the Netherlands, the UK, Germany, France, and Luxembourg since late November.

<h2>What happened?</h2>
In a statement to AFP, Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Belgium described the recall as involving a &ldquo;considerable quantity&rdquo; of products but did not provide specific figures.
"The majority of the affected and unsold products have already been removed from store shelves, and we continue to take measures to remove all remaining products from the market," the company said.
The contamination was discovered during a routine inspection at Coca-Cola&rsquo;s production facility in Ghent, Belgium.
<h2>What are the health risks of chlorate?</h2>
Chlorate is a by-product of chlorine-based disinfectants commonly used in water treatment and food processing. Prolonged exposure to chlorate can pose significant health risks, particularly for children with mild or moderate iodine deficiency, according to a 2015 report by the European Food Safety Authority. The agency also noted that acute exposure in a single day could be toxic.
<h2>Which products are affected?</h2>
The recall includes beverages with production codes ranging from 328 GE to 338 GE. Products impacted by the contamination include:
Fuze Tea
Minute Maid
Nalu
Royal Bliss
Tropico
Consumers have been urged not to consume these drinks and to return them to the point of purchase for a refund.

Coca-Cola recalls 'all' cans, glass bottles in Europe including Sprite, Fanta, and more. Here's why

If you are someone who loves to cook and uses wooden cutting boards to chop your vegetables and dice meat and cheese, then it is highly likely you have come across TikTok videos and Instagram reels that warn you against the rampant use of cutting boards. This is for the simple reason that these cutting/chopping boards are not easy to clean and become host to thousands of viruses that are nearly impossible to get rid of.&nbsp;
What is the solution you ask? Most netizens inspired by these reels will tell you to throw it away and start with a new board. But how many times can we do that as it starts another topic on sustainability and efficient uses of resources?&nbsp;
It all began when a video stating that &ldquo;the average cutting board has 200 times more faecal bacteria than a toilet seat&rdquo; started doing the rounds. It&rsquo;&rsquo;s a shocking statement and one that would grab your attention for sure. But how true is it? Aesthetic nurse practitioner and content creator Miranda Wilson posted about this revelation last November in an Instagram reel that went viral instantly. The statistic however has been floating on the internet since 2014 or maybe even before. Back then, some publications tried warning people against the use of cutting boards and dish towels.
<h2>Can we debunk it though?</h2>
The statistic and similar statements root back to two sources, one from Dr Charles Gerba, a professor of virology at the University of Arizona, who has time and again referenced a survey conducted by the Global Hygiene Council (GHC), an organisation that is "made up of leading global experts in hygiene and associated disciplines."

That data isn&rsquo;t available anymore. But it's safe to say that we can&rsquo;t exact a number as shocking as &ldquo;200 times more bacteria&rdquo; than a toilet seat on cutting boards but it&rsquo;s true that the humble kitchen utility does a lot of harm if not washed and sanitised properly.&nbsp;
<h2>Why are cutting boards getting all the hate?&nbsp;</h2>
All the raw meat that you cut on the boards has some bacteria. Some meat also comes from an animal&rsquo;s intestinal tract, qualifying it as fecal bacteria. So if cutting boards do have 200 times more faecal bacteria than a toilet seat, it&rsquo;s not because of anything else but because the raw meat viruses are not being cleaned off the board properly.
that&rsquo;s not because home cooks are refusing to wash their hands after using the restroom &mdash; it&rsquo;s from cooking raw meat, and not properly cleaning your cutting board afterwards.
<a class="gh-archive-page-post-title-link" href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/lifestyle/news-drinking-tea-and-cancer-can-lower-the-risk-of-some-cancers-report-786742" aria-label="Drinking tea and coffee can lower the risk of some cancers: Report">Drinking tea and coffee can lower the risk of some cancers: Report</a>
The same applies to vegetables and fruits too because they too harbour viruses which can easily transfer and not get washed off simply with warm water and soap. When you chop on a cutting board, the knife may leave behind small grooves, even when they&rsquo;re not visible to the naked eye. These indentations are what harbour bacteria, and once your board becomes especially worn out, washing with soap and hot water still might not eliminate all of the bacteria inside the many grooves.&nbsp;
Many suggest that we should use wooden boards less because they are not so hygienic. But you cant use plastic boards too since microplastics can enter the bloodstream if you use too much of plastic boards. So that leaves us with just one choice &ndash; use them wisely and discard if they get worn out and ensure that they are cleaned optimally from time to time.&nbsp;

If you exercise regularly and are still not losing weight, it could be because you do not have 'skinny genes'.

According to a new study, some so-called skinny genes are responsible for how our bodies respond to exercise.

The researchers from the University of Essex and Anglia Ruskin University found that there are 14 skinny genes that influence weight loss.

"We hypothesised that eight weeks of endurance training could reduce body mass, but participants would improve at different rates, and that this could be explained, in part, by their genetic differences," wrote the researchers in the study.

They examined 38 subjects aged 23 to 40. The volunteers were divided into an exercise group and a control group.

Their exercise regimen&nbsp;was monitored for eight weeks, during which one group completed a running programme of 20 to 30 minutes per week while the control group remained inactive.

The results made the researchers posit that genetic differences were behind the difference in the weight loss, though all followed the same training regimen.

Those with some specific gene variants lost an average of five kilogrammes as opposed to two kg weight loss for those without these variants.

This led the researchers to suggest that people with these genetic variants are capable of better weight management through exercise.

Significantly, they also found that five skinny genes affect mental health, such as depression and intelligence.

<h2>Does it mean you can't lose weight? No. </h2>

What the researchers are suggesting is that 'one size fits all' approach will not work when trying to lose weight through fitness regimens.

Our bodies are unique, and personalised approaches are needed for each of us for seeing benefits of excercise, as genetics can affect its effectiveness.

"This study highlighted some important genes associated with taking inches off the jeans, but it's important to remember that the genes will do nothing without exercise and lifestyle changes as they are all interlinked," exercise scientist Henry Chung from the University of Essex said.

"Without intervention, they won't show their true potential and then it doesn't matter what genes you have," he was quoted as saying in ScienceAlert.

You can get pregnant by having a cough medicine, claim some women in TikTok. Like many other health hacks and 'home remedies', this has been going viral on the video-sharing platform, but medical experts are throwing in some reality checks now.

The medicine doing the rounds as a fertility treatment is Mucinex, or more specifically, the ingredient guaifenesin, which clears mucus and phlegm from the chest.

The 'Mucinex Method' claims have been doing the rounds for months now, with millions of views and even a hashtag #mucinexdpregnancy on TikTok.

In one such TikTok video, a woman said she took the medicine 30 minutes before sexual intercourse and it worked. Any kind of Mucinex or medicine with guaifenesin will work, claimed Amanda MacGibbon, a lifestyle influencer.

Pakistan has made a significant stride in its climate resilience efforts by securing USD 10 million in funding from the Adaptation Fund. This financial support, approved by the Adaptation Fund Board, will be directed towards the Sustainable Actions for Ecosystems Restoration in Pakistan (SAFER) project, a collaborative initiative led by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination in partnership with the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) as detailed in a report by the Press Trust of India.<o:p></o:p>

The SAFER project aims to address critical challenges in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) sectors, particularly targeting vulnerable groups such as women, children, and youth. These communities are often disproportionately affected by climate-induced crises. By focusing on these demographics, the project seeks to enhance resilience and promote sustainable practices that can withstand the adverse impacts of climate change.<o:p></o:p>

The funding aligns with Pakistan's broader national strategies, including its National Adaptation Plan and the Living Indus Initiative. These frameworks advocate for nature-based solutions and ecosystem-based adaptation approaches to safeguard and restore vital ecosystems across the Indus Basin. Given that approximately 90 per cent of Pakistan's population resides within this region, changes in the river's flow due to climate change pose a significant threat to both economic stability and ecological health.<o:p></o:p>

Implementation of the SAFER project will take place over the next three-and-a-half years in key regions, including Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Sindh. The initiative plans to establish community-based early warning systems in high-risk areas, develop nature-based spring-water recharge systems for water-stressed communities, and enhance climate-resilient water infrastructure. These measures are designed not only to mitigate immediate risks but also to empower local communities through participatory approaches.<o:p></o:p>

Romina Khurshid Alam, Coordinator to the Prime Minister on Climate Change &amp; Environmental Coordination, expressed enthusiasm about this development: "We’re delighted to see this project get the go-ahead which aligns perfectly with the Pakistan government's priority to address climate challenges and strengthen resilience in the face of increasing climate-related disasters."<o:p></o:p>

In the year 2000, it was predicted that the person who will live for more than 150 years had already been born. That bold assertion came from confidence that medical advancements in the 20th century would lead to increase in life expectancy.

But that's changing, with a new analysis showing that there is a major slowdown in life expectancy improvements in last three decades.

The study published in Nature journal analysed death data from the longest-living populations in the world to reach this concluson.

Covid as the pandemic may be over, but many people are still fighting 'long Covid', the lingering aftereffects of the viral infection. Now, researchers&nbsp;seem to have found a cause for this.

Long Covid refers to&nbsp;the lasting symptoms experienced by some people who have been exposed to the virus. These symptoms include breathlessness, fatigue, depression and anxiety.&nbsp;Millions of people in the world are currently going through long covid.

Based on brain scans, the researchers found that COVID-19 can inflame the brainstem tissue, which is the brain's control centre, in severe cases of infection.&nbsp;

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/high-likelihood-covid-leaked-from-wuhan-lab-us-told-uk-three-other-allies-at-height-of-pandemic-718127">Also read: 'High likelihood' Covid leaked from Wuhan Lab: US told UK, three other allies at height of pandemic</a>

The researchers examined high-resolution MRI scans of 30 people who were infected before vaccines were made available for the deadly virus.

The scans showed inflammation of the brainstem, a crucial structure in the brain that regulates basic bodily functions like breathing and heart rate.

The researchers hypothesise that the inflammation of the brain stem happens because severe infections trigger an immune response in that area.

This eventually results in long-lasting symptoms for months after hospitalisation.&nbsp;

The abnormalities observed in the scans on areas linked to breathing suggest the inflammation in the brainstem is likely contributing to these long-lasting effects, according to&nbsp;Dr Catarina Rua, a University of Cambridge neuroscientist and lead author of the study published in the journal Brain.

“We didn’t study people with long Covid, but they do often have long-lasting effects of breathlessness and fatigue, which are similar to the symptoms these very severely affected people had six months after they were hospitalised,” Rua was quoted as saying in The Guardian newspaper. “It does lead us to ask the question, do people with long Covid have any brainstem changes?”

The researchers reached the conclusion with the help of advanced 7 Tesla MRI technology.

The technology helped them identify 'microstructural abnormalities' in the brainstem tissue.

The inflammations were seen even six months after the initial hospitalisation of patients.

The study also found a link between inflammation of the brainstem and mental health issues like depression and anxiety, with those having the highest levels of inflammation showing the most severe symptoms.

The study is not conclusive about the causes of long Covid, but suggests that it is important to address inflammations during initial infection of the virus.

If you are a girl or young woman reading this, what would be more worrying for you when going online: FOMO, or the fear of missing out, or the sexual predators and misogynists roaming social media? A rather worrying study in the UK has found that in spite of the hidden dangers, young women are flocking to social media because of FOMO.

The survey by the NGO Girlguiding had more than 2,000 respondents.

It revealed that girls and young women aged 11 to 21 face unwanted sexual images and cyberstalking when surfing the net and social media.

Even as nearly 20 per cent of the respondents said they faced online stalking, many continue to go back to these platforms, with more than half of the respondents on TikTok and Snapchat.&nbsp;More than a third saw unwanted sexual content while online.

But connectivity is not bringing any more happiness to the young girls. Half of the respondents felt uncertain about their future. Only a quarter felt confident about their lives.

And paradoxically, the feeling that online connections are strong has decreased in the past four years, meaning greater connectivity is only leading to more vulnerability for the youth.

One of the issues reported is not new: the unrealistic beauty standards pushed by social media.

A report in The Guardian quoted a Girlguiding advocate Jia,17, as saying that this pressure exacerbates feelings of judgement and comparison, causing loneliness and low self esteem.

“Being online all the time amplifies this. While we’re ‘more connected’, we’re also more exposed to judgment and comparison – through body shaming, sexist jokes, online harassment and objectification. This fuels loneliness and erodes our confidence, which only makes it harder to feel positive about the future,” the paper quoted her as saying.

The girls and young women face a number of other issues when online: 85 per cent of respondents experienced sexism. For more than 50 per cent, sexism&nbsp;happened in real life, while nearly three quarters faced it online.&nbsp;

Sexism fuels thoughts of not feeling safe, with 47 per cent of the girls feeling threatened. This is more than double the rate 10 years ago.

The silver lining of the survey is that&nbsp;44 per cent of the respondents still have hope about their futures.

Angela Salt, Girlguiding's CEO, said sexism continues to be pervasive, leaving many girls feeling vulnerable and unsafe, while noting that it was “devastating to see girls feel less confident about themselves and their futures”.

The survey was published amid plans by the UK government to classify extreme misogyny as a form of extremism.&nbsp;

Zoom fatigue, the mental exhaustion from frequent virtual meetings, may have more serious effects on your brain and heart than previously thought. Prolonged screen time, constant focus on video calls, and lack of physical movement can lead to cognitive overload, stress, and increased anxiety. These factors not only affect mental well-being but can also elevate heart rates and blood pressure, contributing to long-term cardiovascular issues. Experts recommend regular breaks, reducing screen time, and incorporating movement into daily routines to mitigate the negative impact of virtual meeting fatigue on overall health.

The government of the United Kingdom is likely to introduce a new 'game-changing' blood test which will be able to detect signs of the 12 most common&nbsp;cancers before patients develop any symptoms.

Health Secretary&nbsp;Wes Streeting, who is himself a cancer&nbsp;survivor, will introduce the government-funded 'universal' blood screening for treating the disease in five years.

<h2>All about the innovative blood test&nbsp;</h2>

The treatment is a type of PCR test which is used during the pandemic and it can increase survival chances and save many lives every year.

The development comes after a blood test was hailed by the doctors in June in which they can predict if there are chances of breast cancer relapsing before it appears on the scans.

Women who use cannabis during pregnancy may be causing genetic changes in their babies, according to a study that seems to have clearly established the link for the first time in the world.

The study done by the University of Canterbury in New Zealand appears to confirm long-held assumptions that there is a correlation between maternal cannabis use and genetic makeup of offspring.&nbsp;

According to the researchers, pregnant women who smoke weed may be causing prenatal cannabis exposure or PCE to unborn babies, affecting their brain development.&nbsp;

The study found that prenatal cannabis use is associated with molecular changes in the genes of exposed children.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/lifestyle/news-cannabis-found-to-have-anti-ageing-effect-on-brains-of-mice-so-can-pot-make-you-younger-753981">Also read: Cannabis found to have anti-ageing effect on brains of mice. So can pot make you younger?</a>

“We know cannabis use during pregnancy is associated with childhood and adolescent brain development and cognitive function. However, previous studies haven’t been able to prove that cannabis exposure has specifically caused the adverse effects on neurodevelopment that have been observed,” said&nbsp;Dr Amy Osborne, who led the study.

It has been seen since the Covid pandemic that more pregnant women are using cannabis. Many of them smoke weed&nbsp;to deal with pregnancy-related physiological changes, stress and other complications.

The researchers reached the conclusion after examining genomic data from studies in the UK and New Zealand.

“Using data from individuals at birth, aged seven, 15-17, and 27, we showed a molecular signature of prenatal cannabis exposure (PCE) in exposed individuals. We identified a significant number of molecular changes in genes involved in neurodevelopment and neurodevelopmental disease, across the life course," said Dr Osborne.

"This is a key finding because it suggests there is a molecular link between prenatal cannabis exposure and impacts on the genes involved in neurodevelopment.” she said in a release from the university.

This discovery, published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry, seeks to create awareness about risks of cannabis use at a time when many countries are relaxing norms around the drug, making it more freely available for women.

“We hope our research will inspire further investigation ...and there will soon be clearer advice to pregnant women about the impact of cannabis use. Otherwise, the potential risk to children remains, and will likely grow.” Dr Osborne said.

Mothers who use cannabis when pregnant may be causing genetic changes to their babies: Study

Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) is the world's second most disabling disease after leprosy. In India, the numbers are alarming, with over 740 million people at risk of contracting LF. This mosquito-borne disease causes severe swelling in the limbs and other body parts, it can further progress to a chronic stage, including lymphoedema (tissue swelling) or elephantiasis (skin/tissue thickening) of limbs and hydrocele (scrotal swelling) leading to disability, profoundly affecting the lives of millions. However, India is fighting back with a multi-layered five-pronged strategy to make the country LF-free. This includes Mission Mode Mass Drug Administration (MDA) campaigns, Morbidity Management and Disability Prevention (MMDP), Vector Control (Surveillance &amp; Management), High-Level Advocacy and Innovative Approaches like exploring alternate diagnostics.&nbsp;

Social mobilization intricately links every part of this strategy to another. It empowers communities to take ownership of public health interventions by bringing together local stakeholders, health workers, and civil society as one to transform top-down government strategies into grassroot level movements. By integrating social mobilization into every facet of LF control India is ensuring that its public health campaigns reach their targets through lasting engagement needed for long-term impact.

Social Mobilization: Empowering Communities to Lead the Fight

India has made significant progress in achieving an MDA coverage of 82.5% in the year 2023 which has helped in controlling the spread of Lymphatic filariasis despite all challenges, showcasing collaboration of numerous players like Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs), Anganwadi Workers (AWWs), Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), Community Health Officers (CHOs) can help us inch forward to eliminate the disease. They have ensured that populations receive medications along with awareness and education about vector control strategies and home-based morbidity management services.

Social mobilization is thus essential in creating an integrated approach to LF prevention as it helps spread awareness of the biannual administration of essential drugs along with vector control strategies. To overcome impediments to MDA implementation social mobilization is important. It helps in increasing the coverage of preventive treatment by overcoming misinformation and reluctance towards treatment. This helps in adapting messages to fit local contexts. It also overcomes cultural and logistical barriers, and encourages community members to proactively participate in MDA rounds, especially in remote areas. They employ a mix of methods, including door-to-door visits, street theater, local media, and social networks, to spread awareness about Lymphatic Filariasis, correct false beliefs and encourage participation in MDA programs and other prevention tactics. Public appeal videos disseminated via social media channels by prominent leaders encourage widespread public participation in MDA rounds.

In the states of Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal, which are some of the most high-burden states, an MDA coverage of 92%, 95%, and 90% was achieved, respectively, demonstrating how grassroots engagement boosts participation even in the most populous regions. In UP and Bihar, social mobilization has been facilitated through Filaria Patient Networks, which proved to be helpful in overcoming drug resistance in these states with a turnaround of 76% in drug compliance. They organized over 2000 MDA activities to reach 134000 beneficiaries. Medical colleges and rotaries have also launched awareness campaigns, supervised MDA activities and community events, and resource mobilization in different endemic regions.

The critical challenge in fighting LF is the stigma attached to the physical manifestations of the disease, which leaves many affected by the disease isolated from society. In fact, many patients are considered “cursed” and face exclusion from social events, are abandoned by their families, and lose employment opportunities. Patient support groups (PSGs) have also played their part in providing a solution to this by educating and assisting patients about healthcare services and to avail them equitably. In Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria district, PSGs have been coordinating with the Health Department to provide MMDP kits to the patients and educate them on how to manage LF symptoms.

These stories show that when government efforts are backed by the strength of people, they can reap substantial benefits and large-scale impacts by enhancing community engagement and health-seeking attitudes.

Generating demand for preventive care and medicines using platforms like self help groups and survivor networks is another benefit accruing out of social mobilization. This helps in extending help to even the most marginalized communities. In this process these social mobilization enablers end up creating communities of knowledge aggregators by spreading useful information and personal experiences about the disease, like schools, colleges and other institutions.

Social mobilization's benefits extend beyond fostering dialogues. It also closes the gap between communities and healthcare initiatives through practical implementation. All of this becomes possible because of the relentless support and dedicated efforts of District Magistrates (DMs), Chief Medical Officers (CMOs), and other key officials at the district and block level, whose work ensures that social mobilization strategies are implemented effectively and reach the most at-risk populations.&nbsp;

Inter-sectoral convergence helps in amplifying the reach of grassroot level efforts by pooling in resources and coordinating efforts between different ministries and departments from the national level to the states and districts. This is for example shown by The Ministry of Rural Development which has been mobilizing self-help groups (SHGs) to increase drug compliance. The Ministry of Youth Affairs has also been vital in mobilising the youth by involving National Service Scheme (NSS) coordinators. They have been crucial in the MDA implementation and awareness efforts.&nbsp;

When government and communities join forces, they build coordinated parts of one machinery that guarantees that benefits are delivered to those in dire need. Social mobilization thus forms an integrative approach in tackling public health challenges therefore providing grounds to tackle several other public health challenges. This is evidence of the power of community engagement and resource mobilization.

While progress is being made, the fight against LF is far from over. Under the capable stewardship of the National Center for Vector Borne Diseases Control (NCVBDC), social mobilization will be vital in achieving its health goals and becoming LF-free.
