These pills are variants of Modafinil, sold as Provigil, known to improve memory, mood, alertness, and cognitive abilities, said another medical practitioner speaking under the condition of anonymity. It is primarily used to treat disorders like narcolepsy and shift work sleep disorder.&nbsp;

These allow users to stay awake for "40 hours or more at a stretch", with a smoother effect than amphetamines. However, once the drug wears off, users must catch up on sleep to mitigate its adverse effects.

A psychiatrist, Dr R K Saxena, told the news agency that the pressure on students to achieve high percentages is leading them to use these pills.&nbsp;

"The children are berated if they get even half a per cent less than their friends. The pressure to score 98 and 99 per cent in board examinations is slowly killing them. Parents should accept the fact that such high percentages can be unrealistic and not every child can score these marks," said Dr Saxena.

New Zealand announced that it is banning so-called “forever chemicals” from 2026, making it the first country to do so in a bid to protect people and the environment. “We know these chemicals don’t easily break down, they can build up in our bodies, and some can be toxic at high levels,” said EPA’s hazardous substances reassessment manager, Dr Shaun Presow, on Tuesday.

PFAS refers to a class of 14,000 chemicals that are typically used in consumer products to make them water-resistant.&nbsp;

As the name suggests, since these chemicals do not naturally break down, they can cause cancer, liver disease, cardiovascular disease and fetal complications and can contribute to other major health issues.&nbsp;

So far, these chemicals have been detected in drinking water, sea foam, groundwater, ice, and even human blood. It is widely used in products ranging from Teflon pans to pizza boxes.&nbsp;

The announcement was made following EPA’s public consultations last year which received 20 submissions, out of which 14 were from the cosmetics industry.&nbsp;

“We will continue to engage with industry to manage the transition before PFAS are banned and the other changes take effect,” said Presow.&nbsp;

According to the new rules, from December 31, 2026, cosmetic products containing PFAS will be banned from being imported or manufactured in New Zealand. Additionally, from December 31, 2027, cosmetic products containing PFAS would no longer be allowed to be sold or supplied in New Zealand.&nbsp;

In 2023, a number of US states said they are mulling banning cosmetic products which contain the toxic PFA.&nbsp;

The state Senate of Vermont approved legislation in April 2023 which prohibits manufacturers from selling or distributing any consumer-use product that contains PFAS as well as several other chemicals.

This comes after California, Colorado and Maryland imposed similar restrictions which will come into effect in 2025. The European Union (EU) is also considering a proposal to ban PFAS.&nbsp;

As the new year begins, many people in the UK have set fitness goals. A significant 78 per cent&nbsp;of surveyed gym-goers attest to the positive impact of regular exercise on their mental health and overall well-being. This finding highlights the growing recognition of fitness facilities as community spaces fostering mental health support.

<h2>Improved sleep through exercise</h2>

Two-thirds (66 per cent) of respondents report that engaging in regular exercise contributes to better sleep quality.

Huw Edwards, ukactive’s chief executive, told The Guardian about the growing recognition of the value of physical activity in leading fulfilling lives.

“It’s reassuring to see people getting such crucial benefits from physical activity and more are now seeing fitness and leisure facilities as places in the community that can really help them look after their health and wellbeing,” he said.

Advocating for a holistic approach, Edwards urged&nbsp;ministers to support employers in offering gym memberships or home fitness equipment as taxable perks. He proposed&nbsp;VAT reforms, inspired by Ireland's model, to incentivise gym memberships and a reevaluation of business rates to encourage the proliferation of fitness facilities.

Leisure industry analyst David Minton suggested&nbsp;a fresh marketing approach for gyms, targeting a broader demographic, including those not traditionally associated with gym memberships.&nbsp;
