Spicy food has been linked to a longer life according to research done in 2017. The study carried out by the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont shows that eating hot red chili peppers was linked to a 13 per cent lower adjusted risk of death overall in Americans than those who did not. like it hot. Published in PLOS ONE, the research analysed data from 16,179 adults in the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES) III. The data was used from a survey carried out between 1988 and 1994. Participants had an average age of 18.9 years. Over a monitoring period of 273,877 person-years, researchers noted that the overall mortality was 21.6 per cent among those who ate hot red chili peppers, versus 33.6 per cent among those who did not. Even after accounting for variables such as age, health status, and lifestyle choices, the study concluded that eating chili peppers is linked to a statistically significant—albeit modest—increase in life expectancy. After the 2017 study, more research was carried out in the area, including a 2020 analysis. The analysis presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions took into account four major studies where more than 570,000 people in the United States, Italy, China, and Iran were studied for their spicy habits. Those who regularly consumed chili peppers had a 26 per cent lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease, a 23 per cent lower risk of death from cancer, and their risk of death from any other cause also dropped by 25 per cent. “We were surprised to find that in these previously published studies, regular consumption of chili pepper was associated with an overall risk-reduction of all cause, CVD, and cancer mortality,” said senior author Bo Xu, a cardiologist at Cleveland Clinic. However, Xu stressed that the analysis doesn’t prove a direct link between chili peppers and long life, and that more studies need to be carried out. In 2024, the Chinese Medical Journal also carried out a study on spicy food and longevity. Researchers studied the life of 486,000 Chinese adults for roughly 12 years and noted that those who ate spicy food at least once a week were at a slightly lower risk of cardiovascular disease. However, a clear significant link for stroke did not come up in the analysis. Overall, research suggests spicy foods likely had certain health benefits, especially for heart health. However, the effects are not highly defined. Besides, being based on observations, these studied cannot prove cause and effect. It is possible that people who eat more chili peppers also follow a health lifestyle.

What started as pain in the centre of the face turned into bouts of coughing for one woman, who was, within days, sneezing worms out of her nose. The strange medical case has been detailed by the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The 58-year-old woman developed a severe cough after weeks of pain in the centre of her face. Soon, when she sneezed, worms came out of her nose. She sought immediate medical attention, after which an expert removed 10 larvae and one pupa from her maxillary sinuses, the large sinuses located on the sides of the nose. Upon studying two of the larvae and part of a puparium, the researchers learned that the wormlike creatures were the larvae of the sheep bot fly (Oestrus ovis). One larva was pale yellow and about 0.6 inches long, while the other was light brown and 0.8 inches long. The puparium was black and wrinkled. Also Read: Brain dead woman comes back to life in India after ambulance hits huge pothole on UP highway
What were the maggots in the woman's nose?
The Oestrus ovis is found in the nasal passages and sinuses of sheep and goats. Upon investigation, it was found that the woman’s work area was close to a field where sheep grazed. The woman was diagnosed with "O. ovis nasal myiasis with pupation." The report said that after the larvae and pupa were removed from her nose, she was given nasal decongestants and is fine now. What makes the woman’s case unique is the fact that while human cases of O. ovis myiasis have been reported in the past, they have largely affected the eyes, and not the nasal passages. "O. ovis bot flies infrequently affect humans, most often depositing larvae in the conjunctival sac," the study authors wrote. Only rarely have the flies been reported to place larvae into people's nostrils, mouths or ear canals, they added. Also Read: Woman loses part of lung to '99.99%' certain cancer diagnosis, later learns it was pneumonia
A medical first case of Oestrus ovis in humans
Doctors have always believed that O. ovis cannot have a long life cycle in humans, and they usually make it only to the first larval stage. But recently, older larvae have been identified, the report authors wrote. Pupation, which was the found in the case of the Greek woman, is the point at which larvae mature into "teenagers.” In sheep and goats, a female fly drops tiny larvae, or maggots, near a sheep or goat's nostrils. The maggots crawl deep into the animal's nasal passages and sinuses to feed and grow for several months. After developing further, they crawl back out of the nose and drop to the dirt. They burrow into the ground to form a hard shell (pupa), eventually emerging as adult flies. The maggots can sometimes get trapped inside the host's head. When this happens, they almost always die because a living animal's sinuses aren't the right environment for them to turn into flies.

A woman in Greece became concerned when she started sneezing worms. Doctors concluded that it was a case of Oestrus ovis, as the doctors removed 10 larvae and one pupa from her maxillary sinuses. These worms have typically affect human eyes and not the nasal passages.

Doctors have flagged a strange pattern in blood donation requests in America, revealing that people are refusing to accept blood from vaccinated donors. Data from the Vanderbilt University Medical Centre in Tennessee from the past two years shows that the number of people requesting non-anonymous, or directed, blood donations rose significantly over the past two years. The reason is they do not want blood from people who have taken vaccines, especially those immunised against COVID-19. The vaccines against the virus have been dubbed by several people, including Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr, as dangerous. The anti-vaccination movement saw a resurgence after the public was pushed to get vaccinated against COVID-19 at the height of the pandemic. People took to the streets to protest when the government and the private sector used administrative mandates and incentives to make vaccination a requirement to be able to carry out regular activities, personally and professionally. Advocates have claimed that the COVID-19 mRNA vaccines are unsafe for human health, despite the absence of proof. This has contributed to people saying no to blood from anonymous donors and asking for directed blood, where the family can choose specific individuals to donate blood. The study published in the journal Transfusion in March has warned that "despite being framed as ‘safer,’ directed donations may paradoxically increase risk." Blood donation is one area where the anti-vaxxer movement is becoming quite visible, which is happening by refusing vaccinated blood. There is no evidence to show that getting vaccinated against COVID-19 can create a new disease in the body or alter your blood or DNA. Blood donation centres do not test against something like this, although they ensure that the donated blood is safe for transfusion. Also Read: Shake off the pain? Americans are saying no to vaccinated blood, even if it means delaying life-saving surgery: Report

If you work in an office, your workspace could be making your appearance shabby, breaking your skin out, flattening your hair and even discolouring your teeth. At least, this is what the "Office Air Theory" trend on social media claims. But, this might not just be a lame theory; there is possibly real science behind it. The trend started weeks ago when a person with the handle name Noa Donlan posted about it. She told PEOPLE that she first noticed the changes in her appearance while in college. It became more obvious when she started working at an office. "When I looked in the office bathroom mirror at 12 pm, my skin would be dry, my (now oily) hair would be flat, and I just wouldn't feel like myself anymore!" she said. Several people resonated with her and commented on their own experience. They said their lips and skin felt drier, hair frizzy, and by the end of the day, when they are out of work, their skin feels like it will sprout a pimple or two.
ACs remove humidity, dry the air, causing the skin to also lose moisture
With many people who work in offices sharing a similar experience, experts have also spoken. Pain lasts longer for women than men; this is a fact scientists have known for a long time. However, the exact reason for this has remained unclear. Scientists have attributed it to psychological, emotional or social factors. But science hasn't really looked into why women continue to feel pain when it subsides in a man much before them. When pain remains for more time than it should, it turns chronic, and this is something that needs to be dealt with. A new study has shed more light on the problem and states that the reason pain lasts longer in women is because of their immune system. A paper in The Conversation by neuroimmunologist Geoffroy Laumet suggests that immune cells are critical to helping pain resolve, and “differences in how these cells function between men and women may influence how quickly pain goes away.”
Hormones help ease pain more quickly in men
Laumet and his team set out to understand why women continue to be in pain long after the injury has healed. They combined data from experiments done on mice with that of people who had been in motor vehicle collisions. The researchers focused on a molecule called interleukin-10 that helps reduce inflammation. They found that this molecule not only calms inflammation, but also communicates with pain-sensing nerve cells to shut them down. But it behaved differently in males and females. In men, immune cells called monocytes were more likely to produce IL-10, but the same did not happen for women. The researchers also found that their production was linked to testosterone levels - the more testosterone, the higher the production of IL-10. This means that biology favours men while pain maintains a chokehold on women. Also Read: China shocks the world with breakthrough diabetes cure
Immune system and pain
Laumet says that the finding shows that the immune system needs to be viewed as a key player in resolving pain. Britain is suspected to have witnessed the first death from cholera in 125 years, with a man in his 80s losing his life. Health experts believe the father of two died of the Victorian disease. He passed away on Tuesday at the George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton. He fell ill last week and was rushed to the hospital in Warwickshire after his condition deteriorated. There is no confirmation yet that he had contracted cholera, a disease that killed thousands in the United Kingdom during the Victorian era. The doctors suspected that he was sick because of cholera, and so they immediately quarantined him. However, if it turns out to be a case of the water-borne disease, then this would be the first death from it since 1901. Cholera is prevalent in Africa, and many people continue to lose their lives. Initially, they suspected he had norovirus. The UK Health Security Agency has now confirmed that the pensioner contracted a type of bacteria called Non-toxigenic Vibrio cholerae.
The man had not gone out of Britain
The Sun talked to a source close to a family member, who said, "They have no idea how he caught it. They were asked by doctors if he'd been abroad recently, but he hadn't. He lived at home with his youngest son. It was incredibly dramatic. Doctors called them on Sunday and said he could have just hours to live. He clung on until Wednesday but withered away before their eyes." The person said that his eldest son was allowed to see him in full PPE gear. Also Read: India's food safety crisis: How contaminated and ultra-processed foods threaten public health
Cholera symptoms
Cholera is caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. It can manifest from less than a day to five days. It produces an enterotoxin that causes watery diarrhoea, along with stomach pain and nausea. Patients also go through episodes of vomiting, and it might just appear as food poisoning. As the body keeps losing water, dehydration sets in. If not treated on time, it can prove fatal. During the Victorian era, more than 100,000 people died from it between 1831 and 1865. However, safe drinking water and sanitation practices ended cholera in Britain.

Initially, they suspected he had norovirus. The UK Health Security Agency has now confirmed that the pensioner contracted a type of bacteria called Non-toxigenic Vibrio cholerae. The man had not gone out of Britain The Sun talked to a source close to a family member, who said, "They have no idea how he caught it.

Cholera has claimed the life of a British man in his 80s. He fell sick last week and passed away after his condition deteriorated. The UK Health Security Agency confirmed it was cholera, the first death in 125 years.

Swelling or tenderness around joints: Sometimes accompanied by warmth or mild redness, reflecting inflammation inside the joint that may cause visible puffiness and sensitivity to touch. 4. Reduced range of motion: A feeling of restriction while bending or moving the joint, limiting flexibility and making simple actions like squatting, turning, or gripping objects uncomfortable. 5. Grating or clicking sensations: A grinding sound or feeling inside the joint during movement, which may indicate early cartilage degeneration or irregular joint surfaces. Dr Bhardwaj stressed that early diagnosis plays a significant role in de-escalating the disease. Persistent joint pain without injury: Early warning signs you shouldn’t ignore

Everyone complaining that they are tired all the time, step aside. Only people currently in one particular decade of their life have the right to say, according to science. Researchers have found that the most exhausting period of our lives arrives after we turn 40. By this age, even though the body isn't as young as it was in your 20s, life's demands are still sky high. You still have kids to raise and work to do. So you have to do it all, but not be at your best. According to Professor Michelle Spear, an anatomist from the University of Bristol, it is not just about getting older, but is linked to several small biological changes happening together. She told Daily Mail that this "midlife fatigue" is a result of "mismatch between biology and demand". She says that even though our bodies are still producing energy at this age, it does not happen in the same way as in our 20s. It occurs "under different conditions than in earlier adulthood, while the demands placed on that energy often peak." However, she states that these biological imbalances, which drain our energy, are only temporary. But they are enough to leave us feeling tired and fatigued, more than at any other times of our lives. Spear added that in our 40s, we undergo a cellular change. In our 20s, mitochondria, the parts of our cells responsible for making energy, do so in a way that less of it is wasted and inflammatory by-products are not as much. So even if you do not exercise as much or sleep late, the body is not affected as much. However, the same activities in your 40s will have a detrimental effect because of the subtle physical changes that begin to occur. Also Read: Menopause isn’t just hot flushes: Doctors break down what women should know
More exercise, poor sleep quality, perimenopause — Endless list of problems
So despite continuous energy production, we feel sapped because our body is using more of it. Strength training is one effective way to prevent muscle loss and mitigate the impact of this condition. Another aspect is the difference between how stress and less sleep impact us in our 40s as compared to 20s or 30s. Adding to the problem is the fact that getting a good night's sleep becomes difficult with age. So you need to sleep well to feel energetic, and yet sleep eludes you, making it a tough problem to navigate. Professor Spear says, "Hormonal changes, particularly fluctuating oestrogen and progesterone for women during perimenopause, directly affect the brain regions that regulate sleep depth and body temperature." Our body's stress response becomes more active with age, which leads to cortisol rising at night instead of falling, making us feel less rested. Along with all this, people in their 40s face a huge amount of cognitive and emotional load because of all the responsibilities. So you are physically and mentally drained because of all the work and your body is not supporting you. Spear added, "Midlife fatigue, in particular, often reflects cumulative load rather than ageing itself."

Scientists say the most tiring times in our lives arrive when we turn 40. This decade throws everything off balance. There are physical changes, stress, hormonal issues, poor sleep, low muscle strength, and yet the workload keeps increasing.

Scientists have discovered that some people can get drunk even without drinking. This is because of a condition called auto-brewery syndrome (ABS) that triggers alcohol production in the body. This leads to the affected person feeling the buzz minus the alcohol. A study published Thursday in the journal Nature Microbiology details the strange problem in which gut bacteria and biological pathways, a series of biochemical processes that carry out functions in a cell or organism, combine to form this alcohol. The authors say that finding out which bacteria and microbial pathways are responsible for this condition can help with diagnosing the problem easily, offer better treatments and "an improved quality of life for individuals living with this rare condition", Elizabeth Hohmann, co-senior author of the study from the Infectious Disease Division in the Mass General Brigham Department of Medicine, said in a statement. Scientists have determined that particular gut microbes convert carbohydrates into ethanol, which then passes into the bloodstream. While this can commonly happen for quite a few people, in some ABS can lead to a person appearing quite drunk. Researchers added that people who suffer from the problem are afraid of seeking help for fear of being misjudged, of diagnostic issues, and social stigma. This means that most cases of ABS remain undiagnosed. Besides, even for those who try to fix the problem, diagnosing the condition is a problem because it requires closely monitored blood alcohol testing. When it remains undiagnosed, it can lead to problems like legal troubles and social stress, such as being penalised for drunk driving.
Faecal transplantation can help with auto-brewery syndrome
“Auto-brewery syndrome is a misunderstood condition with few tests and treatments. Our study demonstrates the potential for faecal transplantation,” Hohmann said, who is participating in another study investigating faecal transplantation in ABS patients. The team tested the gut microbes of 22 people with ABS, 21 household partners without ABS, and 22 healthy control individuals. They found that ABS flare-ups led to stool samples of the ABS group releasing higher ethanol production. This shows that stool tests could act a way to check for ABS in patients. The samples also showed bacteria like Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae play major roles in ABS. However, detecting the specific microbes that cause the condition might not happen for many more years.

Did you know some people can get drunk without even drinking alcohol? This is a condition many people suffer from, yet it remains undiagnosed for years. In fact, you might even land in legal trouble without being guilty of getting drunk.

A fungus that is resistant to drugs and extremely lethal is fast spreading across the world, a new study has found. According to researchers, the risk to public health from Candida auris has increased sharply, and there is an urgent need to develop "antifungal agents with broad-spectrum activity against human fungal pathogens." C. auris was only discovered in 2009 and cannot be treated with existing drugs. Outbreaks of the fungus have been reported across the globe, including in the US, in the past, triggering a need for better diagnostic systems and medicines. A woman in Brazil was shocked to learn that her blood carried male chromosomes, but this did not affect her appearance in any way. She learnt of this following a miscarriage at the age of 35. When doctors ran tests to understand what had happened, they were looking for a genetic clue in the blood. And Voila! they did find something extraordinary. The tissues showed two genetic lineages, pointing to chimerism, that is, when two sets of genes live in one body. Dr Gustavo Arantes Rosa Maciel, a genetics professor at the University of São Paulo, said that the woman lost her baby at seven weeks. The doctors went for chromosome testing to see whether an inherited trait could have caused it. The blood test returned a result that is seen in males, leading the doctors to think that there could have been some technical error. So, they repeated the test. Gustavo met the patient and noted that she had "all the normal female characteristics. She had a uterus, ovaries… the ovaries were functioning normally." The obsession with fast food claimed a young life in Delhi, where a class 11 student died on Monday at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, because of intestinal infection. The 16-year-old girl reportedly was habitually eating junk food, like noodles, pizzas and burgers. Her unhealthy eating habits led to her intestines sticking together and damaging her digestive system. Doctors performed surgery but could not save her, as she died of heart failure. Ahana, as identified by Bhaskar English, belonged to Amroha in Uttar Pradesh. Her uncle told the publication that she regularly ordered and ate outside food. Her uncle Sajid Khan said Ahana "preferred chowmein, maggi, pizza and burgers over home-cooked food." He admits they did not take her habits seriously and paid the price with her life.
Seven litres of fluid were removed from her stomach
The girl had a severe stomachache on November 28 and was rushed to a hospital in Amroha. Her condition worsened, and she was referred to a hospital in Moradabad. Tests showed her intestines had been damaged and fluid had accumulated in her abdomen. Surgeon Dr Riaz removed around seven litres of fluid from her stomach, a family member said. "After a slight improvement, Ahana was taken to Delhi by her uncle for further treatment." She was treated at Delhi's AIIMS, where the family was informed that her intestines had suffered severe damage due to prolonged consumption of fast food. Her condition improved, and the doctors assured the family that she was recovering and would be fine. She started moving around as well. However, late Sunday night her condition deteriorated suddenly, and she died on Monday morning of heart failure. “The blood circulation in her body had reduced. The infection that began in the intestines spread to the lungs, and the blood vessels carrying blood to the heart became blocked,” according to a report in Live Hindustan.

A 16-year-old girl from Uttar Pradesh passed away at Delhi's AIIMS hospital following damage to her intestines from junk food. Her family says she was addicted to it and preferred it over home cooked meals and ate a lot of it.

Her uncle Sajid Khan said Ahana "preferred chowmein, maggi, pizza and burgers over home-cooked food." He admits they did not take her habits seriously and paid the price with her life. Seven litres of fluid were removed from her stomach The girl had a severe stomachache on November 28 and was rushed to a hospital in Amroha.

A 27-year-old woman diagnosed with a tumour in her brain was shocked when one day it vanished without a trace. She has been declared a medical miracle after her recent scans showed absolutely nothing. Paige Suisted, from Kiwi, New Zealand, one day in April 2024, felt that fingers on her right hand were starting to go numb, followed by her arms and legs. She told Daily Mail Australia that she visited different doctors, and each of them gave her a different diagnosis. When nothing worked, she called an ambulance and pleaded to be admitted to the hospital. CT scans, MRIs and a brain biopsy led her to being diagnosed with stage-four astrocytoma. A health influencer wanted to promote his weight loss programme and wanted to show its effects on himself. But for that, he needed to first achieve a body weight that he could visibly get rid of in front of his followers. So he started a "food marathon" and started eating 10,000 calories a day. His meals included high-calorie foods such as pizza, burgers, chips, and more. He showed off his food on social media. However, his body could not take it and had a heart attack in his sleep, Ostorozhno Novosti channel reported. Russian content creator Dmitry Nuyanzin was on a spree to gain and then lose 25 kgs. NHS England will soon start administering a breakthrough immunotherapy for patients with an aggressive form of leukaemia. The CAR T-cell therapy, known as ‘obe-cel’, saw over three-quarters of patients go into remission in trials. It involves "taking a patient’s immune cells and reprogramming them in a lab to identify and target their cancer, before returning them to the body as living medicine," the NHS said. It will be available within weeks through specialist centres. Eligible patients will receive two doses of CAR-T therapy intravenously, ten days apart. Patients who received the therapy in trials described it as having a “wondrous” effect. England’s top cancer doctor believes this could let patients with aggressive leukaemia live free from cancer for longer, and could even be "hope of a cure". Professor Peter Johnson, NHS National Clinical Director for Cancer, said, "This cutting-edge therapy has shown real promise in trials and could give patients with this aggressive form of leukaemia a chance to live free from cancer for longer – and, for some, it could offer the hope of a cure." He added, "This ‘living medicine’ boosts a patient’s own immune system and then guides T-cells towards the cancer to kill it."
Who is eligible for T-cell therapy, known as ‘obe-cel’?
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence approval will lead the therapy to help around 50 patients each year in England. People aged 26 and over, who have been living with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia which has returned or not responded to previous treatment, will be eligible for the therapy. In a clinical trial, 77 per cent of patients saw their cancer enter remission after treatment with obe-cel. Notably, half of them showed no signs of detectable cancer after three and a half years. On average, the treatment let patients live for 15.6 months more. The therapy also has a lower toxicity and is less likely to cause serious side effects as compared to other CAR (chimeric antigen receptor) T-cell therapies. Health Minister Ashley Dalton said, "This pioneering treatment is excellent news for patients and their families, demonstrating how the NHS is at the forefront of medical innovation. By supporting new treatments with fewer side effects and shorter hospital stays, we’re building an NHS fit for the future whilst cementing the UK’s position as a global leader in medical research.”

A study carried out by two Delhi hospitals claims that music can make surgery and recovery easier for a patient. A new peer-reviewed study from Delhi's Maulana Azad Medical College and Lok Nayak Hospital, published in the journal Music and Medicine, offers evidence of how playing music during general anaesthesia reduces drug requirements to some extent and helps the patient with recovery. According to the researchers, lower doses of anaesthetic drugs, such as propofol and opioid painkillers, help patients regain consciousness more quickly and clearly. On the other hand, those given higher doses of the same drugs and no music took more time to recover. The study focused on patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy, the keyhole operation to remove the gallbladder. Researchers tried to understand whether music could reduce how much of propofol and fentanyl patients required. It started off as a trial with the right patients and grew to an 11-month trial of 56 adults, aged roughly 20 to 45. They were randomly assigned to two groups, all of whom were given a drug that prevents nausea and vomiting, a sedative, fentanyl, propofol and a muscle relaxant. They all wore noise-cancelling headphones, but only one group heard music of their choice - soft flute or piano. "The unconscious mind still has areas that remain active. Even if the music isn't explicitly recalled, implicit awareness can lead to beneficial effects," Dr Farah Husain, senior specialist in anaesthesia and certified music therapist for the study, said. Also Read: Does cannabis help with alcoholism? The alpha-gal syndrome, a dangerous meat allergy transmitted by ticks, has claimed its first life in the United States. A 47-year-old airline pilot from New Jersey succumbed to the disease after being infected during a camping trip in 2024, People reported. Research published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology detailed the case who became allergic to meat. It noted that the unnamed man started having abdominal discomfort after having a steak dinner. It became extremely severe and left him “writhing in pain, having diarrhoea and vomiting.” However, he recovered a day later, but told his son that he felt like he “was going to die.” Then two weeks later, he had a hamburger at a barbecue at around 3 pm. Nearly four and a half hours later, he vomited and became unconscious. He was found “lying on the floor of the bathroom with vomit around him.” The son called 911 at 7:37 pm and started resuscitation. The paramedics took him to a hospital while continuing with the resuscitation efforts for two more hours. However, he was declared dead at 10:22 pm. The research stated that at the time, no definitive reason for the death was called out, with the autopsy listing “sudden unexplained death” as the cause. But his wife got suspicious and contacted a family doctor friend, Dr. Erin McFeely. They wondered whether a tick-borne meat allergy could have led to the death. They reached out to the University of Virginia’s Health’s Dr Thomas Platts-Mills, and who found that a meat allergy definitely was killed the man. While the man had no clear tick bite marks on his body, there were a dozen “chigger” bites around his ankle, that is the larvae of lone star ticks, which carry the sugar molecule alpha-gal in saliva. It is also found in beef, pork, lamb and the meat of most mammals, and can trigger an allergic reaction. While some people might suffer gastrointestinal problems, others can experience anaphylaxis. Alpha-gal syndrome has no treatment or cure, and the only way to avoid a reaction is to stay away from red meat. “It is important that both doctors and patients who live in an area of the country where Lone Star ticks are common should be aware of the risk of sensitisation,” Dr Platts-Mills said in a press release from UVA Health.

Harrison began donating blood plasma at 18 and continued every two weeks until the age of 81. He had pledged to become a donor after undergoing major chest surgery at 14, during which he received multiple blood transfusions.
The Australian Red Cross Blood Service, also known as Lifeblood, paid tribute to Harrison, recognising his decades of commitment to blood donation. In 2005, he held the world record for the most blood plasma donations, a title he maintained until 2022. His daughter, Tracey Mellowship, said he took pride in the lives he had helped save and encouraged others to donate, saying the process was painless and could one day save their own lives. She and two of Harrison’s grandchildren were also recipients of Anti-D immunisations.

Anti-D injections

Anti-D injections are used to prevent haemolytic disease of the foetus and newborn (HDFN), a condition that arises when a mother’s immune system attacks an unborn baby’s red blood cells due to blood type incompatibility. Before the introduction of Anti-D treatment in the 1960s, the condition had a high fatality rate, with half of the affected babies not surviving. Harrison’s ability to produce Anti-D in high quantities may have been linked to the extensive blood transfusions he received as a teenager.
Currently, fewer than 200 donors in Australia provide Anti-D plasma, supporting approximately 45,000 mothers and babies each year. Lifeblood, in collaboration with the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, is working to replicate Anti-D antibodies in a laboratory to develop a synthetic alternative.

Researchers hope that lab-produced Anti-D can eventually be made available to pregnant women worldwide. Lifeblood’s research director, David Irving, noted the challenges in maintaining a steady supply, as only a small number of donors can produce antibodies in the required quality and quantity. The development of an alternative treatment remains a priority for researchers.

James Harrison, an Australian known for his rare blood plasma that helped save the lives of more than 2.4 million babies, has died at the age of 88. His family confirmed that he passed away in his sleep at a nursing home in New South Wales on 17 February. Harrison, referred to as the “man with the golden arm,” carried a rare antibody, Anti-D, in his blood, which was used to create medication for pregnant women at risk of their immune system attacking their unborn child. A newly identified bat coronavirus, HKU5-CoV-2, has been found in China, raising concerns about potential transmission to humans. The discovery was made by a team of virologists led by Shi Zhengli (Batwoman), a scientist known for her research on coronaviruses at the Wuhan Institute. The findings were reported by the South China Morning Post (SCMP).
The study indicates that HKU5-CoV-2 belongs to the merbecovirus subgenus, which also includes the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) virus. Researchers found that HKU5-CoV-2 can bind to human ACE2 receptors, a characteristic shared with SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19. The ability to interact with these receptors suggests a potential for human infection.
During laboratory tests, HKU5-CoV-2 was able to infect human cell cultures in mini-organ models. The study, cited by Newsweek, highlights the possibility of spillover from bats to humans, either directly or through intermediate hosts. However, researchers stated that further investigation is required to determine the likelihood of such an event.
The research team noted that HKU5-CoV-2 demonstrated better adaptation to human ACE2 receptors than lineage 1 HKU5-CoV. The study concluded that this distinct lineage of bat coronaviruses has zoonotic potential but stopped short of confirming its ability to cause disease in humans.

Experts Caution Against Overstating Pandemic Risk

Following the publication of the study, some experts have urged caution in interpreting the findings. Dr Michael Osterholm, an infectious disease expert at the University of Minnesota, stated that concerns over a new pandemic may be overstated. He pointed out that global immunity to SARS-like viruses is now higher than it was before the COVID-19 outbreak, which could reduce the risk of widespread transmission.
Additionally, the study noted that HKU5-CoV-2 has a lower binding affinity to human ACE2 compared to SARS-CoV-2, along with other factors that may limit human adaptation. Researchers stated that while vigilance is necessary, the risk of the virus emerging in human populations should not be exaggerated.

A California-based snack company, Cal Yee Farm LLC, has issued a recall for several chocolate and yogurt-covered products after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classified them under Class I, the highest risk level. The recall follows the discovery of undeclared allergens, including milk, soy, wheat, sesame, synthetic dye, and almonds, in some of the company's products. These allergens could potentially trigger severe allergic reactions in sensitive individuals. The affected products include Dark Chocolate Walnuts, Dark Chocolate Raisins, Dark Chocolate Almonds, and other similar items. The recall was initiated after the FDA identified that these products were sold with incorrect labelling. Although no illnesses have been reported, the company warned consumers with allergies to milk, soy, wheat, sesame, synthetic dye, and almonds. The affected items were sold in California, Arizona, Virginia, New Mexico, Texas, Tennessee, Oregon, Ohio, and Pennsylvania, both through the company’s retail store in Suisun Valley, California, and its website, www.calyeefarm.com. Additional sales occurred through Boa Vista Orchards’ store in Placerville, California. The recall includes a variety of Cal Yee Farm branded products, sold in clear plastic zippered pouches in 8-ounce bags or larger, with bright yellow labels and small white UPC code labels on the back. The FDA has reclassified the recall, which is a routine part of the agency’s process. Consumers who purchased the affected products are advised to dispose of them or return them for a full refund. For more information, Cal Yee Farm can be reached at (707) 425-5327 or via email at mariatmail03@gmail.com. The company’s customer service hours are from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Pacific Time, Monday through Friday. The FDA’s classification system includes Class I, which indicates a serious risk of adverse health consequences or death; Class II, which suggests temporary or medically reversible consequences; and Class III, which involves products unlikely to cause harm.
