In one dataset comprising 17,576 patients, 47 per cent of men were released with a prescription for an analgesic medicine, while only 38 per cent of women were given a similar prescription. A total of 21,851 patients reached the hospital with complaints of pain, and the researchers found a huge disparity.

"Across these datasets, a consistent sex disparity emerges," the researchers write.

The study was conducted by a team led by psychologists Mika Guzikevits of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and Tom Gordon-Hecker of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel. "We argue that female patients receive less pain treatment than they should, which may adversely impact their health," the paper says. The disease not only causes physical suffering but also significantly impacts livelihoods. Dr. Ganguly further noted, "Patients with lymphoedema often experience recurrent infections that can confine them to bed for days, impairing their ability to work and earn a living. This cycle of disability perpetuates poverty and hampers economic development." 
 
India aims to eliminate lymphatic filariasis as a public health concern by 2027 through integrated approaches involving mass drug administration and effective vector control measures. Dr N K Ganguly, Former Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), told WION, "Vector-borne diseases like lymphatic filariasis are intricately linked with the monsoon season and fluctuating temperatures. Individuals in subtropical and tropical regions may contract the disease and end up suffering from chronic conditions such as lymphatic vessel obstruction, leading to fluid accumulation in the limbs (lymphoedema), hydrocele (swelling of the scrotum), chyluria (presence of lymphatic fluid in urine).” The disease not only causes physical suffering but also significantly impacts livelihoods. Dr. Ganguly further noted, "Patients with lymphoedema often experience recurrent infections that can confine them to bed for days, impairing their ability to work and earn a living. This cycle of disability perpetuates poverty and hampers economic development." India aims to eliminate lymphatic filariasis as a public health concern by 2027 through integrated approaches involving mass drug administration and effective vector control measures. As the country confronts the challenges posed by a shifting climate, urgent actions are necessary to safeguard the health and well-being of people residing in LF-endemic regions. Rising temperatures and erratic rainfall patterns expand mosquito habitats and accelerate transmission cycles. Dr. Bhupendra Tripathi, Deputy Director, Infectious Diseases and Vaccine Delivery, at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, told WION, "Prevention and vector control form the cornerstones of the Government of India’s enhanced strategy for LF elimination. The government's disease prevention strategy includes the annual Mass Drug Administration (MDA) of anti-filarial medicines to eligible populations, excluding pregnant women, children less than 2 years of age, and severely ill individuals, free of cost." Dr. Bhupendra added, "This is supported by consistent vector control activities throughout the year. Enhancing MDA coverage, ensuring treatment compliance and taking protective measures are pivotal to interrupting disease transmission and alleviating the health and socio-economic burden in impacted regions. Few endemic states will be undertaking the Mass Drug Administration round starting August 10, 2024. It is imperative that people participate wholeheartedly in these rounds and safeguard themselves and their communities."

In world first, a 13-year-old British boy with severe epilepsy trialled a new brain implant fitted in the skull aimed at bringing seizures under control.&nbsp;

Sending electrical signals deep into his brain, the neurotransmitter has reduced Oran Knowlson’s daytime seizures by 80 per cent, as per a BBC report.

Oran had developed Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a treatment-resistant form of epilepsy, at the tender age of three years, anguishing with dozens to hundreds of seizures each day throughout his life.

Sometimes, the seizures would take an appalling turn, where he fell to the ground, shook violently, and lost consciousness. At times, he would cease to breathe and require emergency medication to resuscitate him.

After an eight-hour-long surgery to implant the neurotransmitter in Oran’s skull in October 2023 as part of a trial at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, the boy’s life began to change for the better.

<h2>How the skull-fitted neurotransmitter works</h2>

Epilepsy seizures are triggered by abnormal bursts of electrical activity in the brain.

By emitting a constant pulse of current, the device aims to block or disrupt the abnormal signals.

After two electrodes were inserted deep into Oran’s brain, the 3.5cm square and 0.6cm thick neurotransmitter was placed in a gap in Oran’s skull where the bone had been removed and was anchored into place.

After a month of recovering from the operation, the neurotransmitter was turned on.&nbsp;

Oran cannot feel the device when turned on, and can recharge it every day via wireless headphones, while enjoying activities he likes to do, such as watching TV.

‘Dramatical improvement in his seizures, quality of life…’

Seven months after the surgery, his mother, Justine told the BBC that there had been a massive improvement in Oran’s epilepsy: he was happier, “more alert” with “no drop seizures during the day”, and had a “much better quality of life”. His night-time seizures were also "shorter and less severe".

As part of the trial, three more children with Lennox-Gastaut syndrome will be fitted with the deep brain neurostimulator.

Although deep brain stimulation has been tried before for childhood epilepsy, the procedure was fraught with the risks of infections after the surgery and the device failing, as neurotransmitters were placed in the chest with wires running up to the brain.&nbsp;

In the future, the trial team plans to make the neurotransmitter respond in real-time to brain activity, in order to block seizures before they happen.
