Climbing 50 stairs a day can help keep doctors away, a new study has revealed. According to research published in the journal Atherosclerosis, ascending more than five flights of stairs (50 steps) every day can reduce the risk of heart-related diseases by 20 per cent.

“Short bursts of high-intensity stair climbing are a time-efficient way to improve cardiorespiratory fitness,” study co-author Dr Lu Qi, a professor at the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, said in a news release.

Unfortunately, drug abuse among teens is a major social problem across the world. Mixing various OTC drugs like Benadryl and Xanax, which is extremely dangerous, is gaining popularity among the masses. Meanwhile, trends like the "Benadryl Challenge" are resulting in a spike in overdoses among young teens and adolescents.

The challenge encourages people to take as many as 12 tablets of Benadryl at a time to supposedly induce hallucinations. It is to be noted that the maximum allowed dose in a 24-hour period for children aged 6 to&nbsp;12 is&nbsp;six tablets and 12 tablets for adults and children over 12. Taking more than the recommended amount can lead to nausea, seizures or even death.

The first reported case of death from the social media stunt was reported in September 2020. A 15-year-old Oklahoma girl lost her life after attempting the challenge. At the time, her aunt shared a social media post to alert kids taking part in the TikTok challenge.&nbsp;

Earlier this month, a 13-year-old Ohio teen Jacov Stevens died after participating in the challenge with his friends. A video reportedly showed him chugging the pills, after which his body started to "seize up".&nbsp;

<h2>What does US Food and Drug Administration have to say about it?</h2>

In a September 2020 statement, the Food and Drug Administration said that it has investigated reports of deaths of adolescents participating in TikTok's "Benadryl challenge", in which&nbsp;people take&nbsp;Benadryl in large quantities to experience hallucinations. The agency&nbsp;contacted the social media platform to urge them to remove&nbsp;such videos and warn users against exceeding the recommended doses of over-the-counter (OTC) medications.

"We are aware of news reports of teenagers ending up in emergency rooms or dying after participating in the 'Benadryl Challenge' encouraged in videos posted on the social media application TikTok," the FDA warning said.

"As soon as we became aware of this dangerous trend, we contacted social media platforms to have the content removed," the FDA statement further read. "We are continuing to monitor and work with safety teams at the various social media platforms to remove dangerous content."

The&nbsp;pharmaceutical company also recommended keeping all medications out of the reach of children.&nbsp;And, also noted that at that time, Johnson &amp; Johnson was "working with TikTok and other social platforms to remove content that showcases this behaviour".

The National Health Service (NHS) has started a clinical trial of a pioneering treatment technique which is aimed at extending the lives of people with brain tumours. A report by The Guardian on Thursday (February 2) said that a team including radiologists, neurosurgeons, oncologists and physicists are using detailed MRI scans and highly-targeted radiotherapy before surgery to reduce the likelihood of tumours growing back quickly, thereby helping patients to live longer.&nbsp;

But he pointed out that surgery would always be essential. “Remnant tumour cells remain growing, potentially even more aggressively post-surgery in the recovery period, before the patient is given the standard course of radiotherapy,” he said, adding that better strategies are desperately needed to target all tumour cells at an earlier stage.&nbsp;

“As a tumour is likely to respond better to radiotherapy before the operation, we hope, by giving highly-targeted radiotherapy before surgery, to stop the tumour from growing back so quickly to improve outcomes and extend lives,” the team leader also said.&nbsp;

Patients who are part of the trial undergo an MRI which helps the surgeons estimate where remnant cells are most likely to be left after they operate. The report said that a single dose of radiation is aimed precisely at that area, and patients then have surgery followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Joel Rush, a director of a digital marketing agency he co-founded with his wife, is one of the first patients in the trial. Rush was diagnosed with glioblastoma after experiencing severe headaches and pain in October last year. “The doctors explained the reasons for using radiotherapy before surgery – made absolute sense – so I was very happy to participate in the trial,” he said.&nbsp;

Dr Brost, meanwhile, said that the team was pleased with how Joel Rush responded to the treatment and the results so far are encouraging.&nbsp;

Dmitrieva is a researcher in the Laboratory of Cardiovascular Regenerative Medicine at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, which is a division of NIH.&nbsp;

The news release of the study mentions that lifelong water restriction shortens the lifespan and promotes degenerative changes in mice.&nbsp;

To conduct the study, researchers performed a large population-based observational study with a long 25-year follow-up. They acquired data from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study with middle-aged enrollment. The researchers said that they used serum sodium, as a proxy for hydration habits.&nbsp;

To estimate the relative speed of ageing, the researchers e calculated the biological age from age-dependent biomarkers. After analysing the results, they assessed the risks of chronic diseases and premature mortality.&nbsp;

As per the news releases, the analysis showed that middle age serum sodium greater than 142 mmol/l is associated with a 39 per cent increased risk to develop chronic diseases. Meanwhile, if it is more than 144 mmol/l, there is a 21 per cent elevated risk of premature mortality.&nbsp;

The researchers mentioned that intervention studies are needed to confirm the link between hydration and ageing.
