'Had tears in my eyes': Mandhana on India women's Asian Games gold, recalls Chopra's Tokyo 2020 feat

Indian Women’s Team captain Harmanpreet Kaur said she doesn’t regret criticising the officials following the Dhaka ODI against Bangladesh last month, after which she was slapped with a hefty fine and received four demerit points, resulting in getting suspended for two games. Reflecting on the instance that brought her professional conduct in a bad light, the attacking batter said whatever she said had happened on the field, adding she has a right to express herself.

During the third and final ODI, Harmanpreet let her frustration come out in an ugly manner after being adjudged LBW during the chase. She first broke the stumps after being given out, and while on her way to the pavilion, she even had an unruly exchange of words with the on-field umpires. Even after the match, she called the umpiring ‘pathetic’.

It doesn’t end here.

While both teams were getting ready for the group photo, Harmanpreet allegedly asked the umpires to join the Bangladesh team, indicating they were also part of it.

Commenting on this episode, Harmanpreet, playing for Trent Rockets in the Women’s Hundred, told The Cricket Paper, "I will not say that I regret anything because at the end of the day as a player you want to see that fair things are happening. As a player, you always have the right to express yourself and what you're feeling."

"I don't think I said anything wrong to any player or any person. I just said what happened on the field. I don't regret anything,” she added.

Repercussions followed

Of course, repercussions were to follow, and they did.

The Indian Women’s Captain was fined 50% for showing dissent at an umpiring decision and another 25% for publicly criticising the match officials. She also received three demerit points for the first offence and one for the second, adding up to four in total.

Per the law, if a player receives four demerit points within 24 months, those convert into suspension points – equivalent to one Test ban or two ODIs or T20Is ban, depending on what comes first.

As a result, Harmanpreet Kaur will miss the opening two matches for her team at the Asian Games T20 competition, which starts in Hangzhou in September.

Meanwhile, after the incident, BCCI secretary Jay Shah said board president Roger Binny and NCA head VVS Laxman would speak with Harmanpreet about this.

India are one of the four teams which will be playing Tests in the 2022-25 Future Tour Program (FTP) cycle apart from Australia, England and South Africa. The Indian side, however, will be playing the least number of Tests (2) behind England (5), Australia (4) and South Africa (3).

"This year we have two Tests - one against England and one against Australia - and I hope those games can make a huge impact on women's cricket and hopefully in the future we will keep getting more Test matches. We have to bring back Test matches in women's cricket because it's very important for women's cricket," said Harman.

The skipper, who is currently in England playing The Hundred for Trent Rockets, also spoke about the need to bring back two-, three-day games to domestic setup in India. She, however, acknowledged that the level of domestic cricket has improved a lot.

"Trust me, [domestic cricket] has improved a lot," she said. "Initially when I started playing, we hardly got domestic games but for the last couple of years, domestic level has improved a lot. We are getting more games and some domestic games are live also, people can watch on TV.

"It is improving day by day but in my early days we used to play two- and three-day games which we are really missing, and I'm sure after these two Test matches hopefully we'll get two-day matches back. The more cricket we get, the more improvement we'll see in women's cricket," she said.

ICC confirms Harmanpreet Kaur's two-match ban for breaking stumps in third ODI against Bangladesh

India women cricket team skipper Harmanpreet Kaur is staring at a two-match suspension following her outburst during the tied third ODI against Bangladesh. While the International Cricket Council (ICC) is yet to release the statement or the retribution for her actions, Kaur would be the first female player to get banned if the step is taken.

As per ESPN, the match officials have deemed four demerit points for Kaur's behaviour during the match. According to ICC rules, a player gets suspended for two ODIs or one Test or two T20Is, whatever comes first, if between four to seven demerit points get accumulated in his/her name in a 24-month period. The matter will be dealt under Level 2 of ICC Rules which refers to players' behaviour.

Kaur's reaction in the match included breaking of stumps with her bat after being given out in the slip. The Indian skipper then argued with the umpire while walking back before criticising the umpire during the post-match presentation. The match officials suggested three demerit points for breaking the stumps and one for criticising the official in public. while the final decision will be taken by the ICC, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is understood to be talking with the apex body on the matter.

“A lot of learning from this game. Even apart from the cricket, the type of umpiring that was happening there, we were very surprised," Harmanpreet said after the match ended in the tie. The series was shared by both Bangladesh and India after it ended with 1-1 scoreline.

"The next time whenever we are coming to Bangladesh, we'll have to make sure we have to deal with this kind of umpiring and accordingly we'll have to prepare ourselves," added Kaur. "We controlled the game very well but as I mentioned earlier some pathetic umpiring was done and we are really disappointed about some decisions given by the umpires."

He said that the way Harmanpreet Kaur behaved in the last match was very bad. Madan Lal also said that she (Harmanpreet Kaur) is not bigger than the game. Madan Lal tweeted, "Harmanpreet’s behaviour against the Bangladesh women’s team was pathetic. She is not bigger than the game. She got a very bad name for Indian cricket. BCCI should take very strict disciplinary action."

Indian Women’s Team captain Harmanpreet Kaur will be fined 75 per cent of her match fees for her on-field misconduct during the third and final ODI against Bangladesh on Saturday.
Harmanpreet furious at umpires

On the fourth ball of the 34th over, Harmanpreet was given caught out in the slip region though she thought the ball had not touched the bat. An angry Harmanpreet stared at umpire Tanvir Ahmed and was seen returning to the pavilion with an angry reaction. She would later term the incident pathetic as both India and Bangladesh failed to win the match and thereby the series.

“A lot of learning from this game. Even apart from the cricket, the type of umpiring that was happening there, we were very surprised," Harmanpreet said after the thrilling contest.

India were 160/3 when Harmanpreet was given out and the team still had six wickets in hand while needing 66 runs to win. However, a titanic collapse almost saw India lose the match as India went from 216/6 to 217/9 in a blink of an eye.

Harmanpreet’s anger though was the talking point of the day as both teams ended the series at parity.

In between we leaked a few runs but when we were batting, we controlled the game very well but as I mentioned earlier some pathetic umpiring was done and we are really disappointed about some decisions given by the umpires."

While winning the series could have scripted history for Bangladesh, they still had a silver lining as with the ton of Fargana Hoque. She became the first Bangladesh woman to score a hundred in the ODI format having scored 107 while her side batted first in the decisive contest.

Harmanpreet Kaur to lead Team India as BCCI announces women's squad for Asian Games

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration and European Space Agency (ESA) have selected three astronauts to serve as crew members for NASA's SpaceX Crew-3 mission to the International Space Station, which is expected to launch in the fall of 2021.

According to the NASA, the trio will consist of its astronauts Raja Chari, an Indian-American US Air Force colonel, and Tom Marshburn, who will serve as commander and pilot, respectively, and ESA astronaut Matthias Maurer, who will serve as a mission specialist. A fourth crew member will be added at a later date, following a review by NASA and its international partners.

This will be the first spaceflight for Chari, who became a NASA astronaut in 2017. He was born in Milwaukee but considers Cedar Falls, Iowa, his hometown. He is a colonel in the US Air Force and joins the mission with extensive experience as a test pilot.

He has accumulated more than 2,500 hours of flight time in his career. Chari was selected earlier this month as a member of the Artemis Team and is now eligible for assignment to a future lunar mission.

Marshburn is a Statesville, North Carolina, native who became an astronaut in 2004. Prior to serving in the astronaut corps, the medical doctor served as a flight surgeon at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston and later became medical operations lead for the International Space Station. "The Crew-3 mission will be his third visit to the space station and his second long-duration mission. Marshburn previously served as a crew member of STS-127 in 2009 and Expedition 34/35, which concluded in 2013," the NASA said.

Maurer comes from Sankt Wendel, in the German state of Saarland. Like Chari, Maurer will be making his first trip to space with the Crew-3 mission. In 2016, Maurer spent 16 days on an undersea mission as part of a NASA's Extreme Environment Mission Operations, or NEEMO, space analog.

When Chari, Marshburn, and Maurer arrive at the orbiting laboratory, they will become expedition crew members for the duration of their six-month stay. "The crew will have a slight overlap with the Crew-2 astronauts, who are expected to launch in the spring of 2021. This will not be the first commercial crew mission to overlap. The Crew-1 astronauts, who are currently on station, and the Crew-2 astronauts, also are expected to coincide in their sojourns for a short time. Increasing the total number of astronauts aboard the station is allowing the agency to boost the number of science investigations conducted in the unique microgravity environment," NASA said.

This will be the third crew rotation mission of SpaceX's human space transportation system and its fourth flight with astronauts, including the Demo-2 test flight, to the space station through NASA's Commercial Crew Program. The goal of the program is to provide safe, reliable, and cost-effective crew access to the space station and low-Earth orbit in partnership with the American aerospace industry.

Moreover, the station is a critical testbed for NASA to understand and overcome the challenges of long-duration spaceflight.

BAN-W vs IND-W: Bangladesh avoid T20I series whitewash vs Harmanpreet & Co., win final tie by four wickets

Indian Women’s Team captain Harmanpreet Kaur displayed grit and hit an unbeaten 54 to help her side win the first T20I against Bangladesh in Mirpur on Sunday. The right-handed batter hit six fours and two sixes in her first outing in the Indian colours since the T20 World Cup semis debacle against the Aussies in February early this year.

Electing to bowl first after winning the toss, the Indian Women’s Team made light work of the hosts, picking the first wicket inside the Powerplay.

In the absence of experienced Shikha Pandey, Pooja Vastrakar shared the new ball with Amanjot Kor, while Deepti Sharma made her presence felt with a tight spell.

On the wicket that looked like assisting the batters, the collective bowling performance from the unit restricted Bangladesh to an under-par total of 114 for five in 20 overs. While there were a few 20s from the batting side, none could pounce on the chance and make it big.

From India, Vastakar, debutant Minnu Mani, and star opener Shafali Verma picked a wicket each.

Meanwhile, the chase didn’t begin well for the Indian team as new-ball bowler Marufa Akter dismissed Shafali Plumb in front on a three-ball duck. Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues started building a stand before offie Sultana Khatun sent the young Rodrigues packing on 14-ball 11, reducing India to 21 for two at one stage.

The seasoned pair of Mandhana and captain Harmanpreet bailed India out of trouble with some cautious approach and stunning stroke play. While the left-handed Mandhana got stumped on 38, the 70-run stand with Harmanpreet had already done the damage.

Later, it was about time before the skipper and keeper-batter Yastika Bhatia completed the formalities and helped the Indian Women’s Team draw first blood in three-match T20Is.

Great performance - Captain Kaur lauds team

Speaking after the match, the Indian Women’s Team captain Harmanpreet Kaur lauded the performance, especially the bowlers, who set the tone with their spell in the Powerplay.

“We were able to execute our plans. It was a great performance by our team. I wanted to see how our bowlers were going to bowl in the first 6 overs. I think Deepti showed her experience. Smriti showed her character today, with that batting line-up you don't need to worry much. We wanted to finish with 4-5 overs left, and we managed to do that,” Harmanpreet Kaur said.

The second match of the series will begin on Tuesday at the same venue.

BAN-W vs IND-W, 1st T20I: Harmanpreet Kaur's unbeaten 54 guides India to easy seven-wicket win in opener

After achieving glory in the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), Mumbai Indians’ all-rounder Humairaa Kaazi credited the team’s win to the atmosphere created by the leadership group led by skipper Harmanpreet Kaur as well as the confidence the players derived from a winning start.

Kaazi said the team had a very clear goal from the outset, to be champions. “We won five games on the trot at the beginning. We knew what we needed to do to win. When we lost two games after that, we knew where we were lacking. When we started the tournament, our only aim was to win the trophy. Mumbai Indians had to be the champions in the inaugural edition. All of us had that mindset. That helped us to put our best foot forward,” she said.

Humairaa also felt that Captain Harmanpreet Kaur’s role as a leader gave the team a huge edge as she made the players feel welcome and special.

“I had heard that she’s very strict and doesn’t talk a lot but when she joined the team, it was totally the opposite. She is very fun-loving and gives very positive vibes. She made us very comfortable. She would have a lot of fun with us. She also gave us her inputs during the practice session. We had a lot of respect for her but she made us feel like her own,” she said.

After a blistering start which saw MI win each of their first five matches, they lost two games on the trot. That did not deter the team as they then won three matches in succession, including two in the playoffs, to win the title.

Speaking about what led to the turnaround, Humairaa said, “After those two losses, we watched ‘Creed’. I don’t know what hit us after watching that but we went all out in the practice session the next day. We just went in with the thought of putting in our best efforts in the final and that is what we all did.”

Humairaa played in all ten matches in MI’s victorious campaign.

Playing with overseas players for the first time meant a lot of new learnings. Kaazi said the biggest learning was to just back herself.

“What I have learnt is to back myself and my strengths in any situation. For example, the way Nat (Nat Sciver-Brunt) backed herself in the final, she knew she could take the team past the finish line.”

Being a Mumbaikar made the journey extra special for her. It also made her a key resource in team meetings.

“I feel very lucky to be a local player representing Mumbai Indians. The positive for me was that I knew how the wickets play here. I spoke about how the wickets will slow down by the end of the tournament. Being a part of Mumbai Indians was the icing on the cake for me. I had a very strong desire to be a part of the inaugural WPL.”

The inaugural edition also saw players from various international countries play in the same team as the domestic uncapped players from India. At MI, the humility of the international players stood out for Humairaa.

“When all of us met, the international players came across as very humble. We never felt like they were people we didn’t know from earlier. They would have coffee with us. We would sit at the coffee table and talk. We used to sit and talk in the team room. It never felt like we were from different countries. We felt like we were with the team for many years,” she said.

Suryakumar enjoyed a stellar 2022 and was rewarded for his excellent show throughout the world in different conditions. The Mumbai Indians batter scored a total of 1164 of them at a ridiculous strike rate of 187.43 in 2022. His tally of 68 T20I sixes saw him register another record to his name for the most T20I Sixes in a calendar year.

Interestingly, he helped India win 28 T20I matches in 2022 out of 40 and was instrumental in the team’s success in England, West Indies, Australia and New Zealand. His two centuries and nine half-tons - including three in the 2022 T20 World Cup alone were the features of his batting display for the national side. His special ton included his maiden hundred against England in Nottingham as they beat the hosts in their own backyard where he scored 55-ball 117.

On the horizon, Harmanpreet is one of the Five Cricketers of the Year announced in the 2023 Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack. The skipper of the Indian women’s team, Harmanpreet led India to a silver medal in the Commonwealth Games (CWG) where India lost in the final to Australia. She also was instrumental in India’s first series win on English soil since 1999, as they beat England 3-0.

The 34-year-old piled on 754 ODI runs, including an unbeaten 143 in the England ODIs and 524 T20I runs and had an amazing 2022.

WPL 2023: Harmanpreet slams another 50 as Mumbai beat UP women by eight wickets for fourth win on the trot

One couldn’t have asked for a better start to the much-hyped 2023 Women’s Premier League (WPL). Harmanpreet Kaur’s blistering 65 off 30 balls and an all-around show from the bowling unit helped Mumbai Indians (MI) begin their WPL 2023 campaign with a massive 143-run over Gujarat Giants on Saturday. Following a crazy opening ceremony at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai that saw several Bollywood stars turn up for a special occasion, MI didn’t take long before further lighting up the arena with some explosive shots.

After a jittery start, Mumbai’s pair of Hayley Matthews and Nat Sciver-Brunt had Gujarat on the mat early on. Matthews’ 47 and England’s Sciver’s 23 had Mumbai in the driver’s seat before Harmanpreet Kaur took the charge and hit the fifth gear from ball one. The Indian women’s team captain not only slammed a 22-ball fifty, but she also hit seven successive fours across two overs in the later half of the innings to put Mumbai in a commanding position.

Accompanying her at the other end was New Zealand’s Amelia Kerr who also scored an unbeaten 45. An outstanding partnership in the middle overs and a cracking finish at the end saw Mumbai pile up a mammoth 207 for five in 20 overs.

Gujarat in their chase were jolted with a huge blow early on as their captain and batter in-form Beth Mooney got injured and was taken off. This is where it all fell apart for Gujarat, which in no time got reduced to 23 for seven inside eight overs.

While left-arm orthodox Saika Ishaque ended up with figures of four for 11, the overseas duo of Nat Sciver-Brunt and Amelia Kerr picked two wickets each. On the flip side of this collapse, India’s Dayalan Hemalatha stood strong at one end hitting an odd boundary.

However, it all ended in Mumbai's favour as they won the first match of the WPL 2023 by 143 runs.

WPL 2023, MI-W vs GG-W: Mumbai's Harmanpreet Kaur, bowlers annihilate Gujarat Giants in opener

Mumbai Indians’ captain Harmanpreet Kaur lit up the inaugural match of the Women’s Premier League with a stupendous 65 off 30 balls in the first innings. Making the outing all about her, Harman smashed 14 fours during her blistering knock that saw MI score a mammoth 207 for five in 20 overs. Resuming from where she had left in the Women’s T20 World Cup, Harman began with the onslaught from ball one and kept punishing every bowler with each passing delivery.

She not only up the ante but also sent shivers down the spine of the Gujarat team by taking the attack to the opposition. Playing a captain’s knock, the right-handed batter completed her fifty in just 22 balls, striking at more than 200. In the 15th over, Harman hit Monica Patel for four successive fours before hitting Ashleigh Gardner for three back-to-back fours in the following over.

It clearly looked like the Gujarat bowlers didn’t have answers to Harman’s outstanding shots. However, as all good things must come to an end, Harman’s dream innings in WPL’s first-ever match ended on 65 off 30 balls. It was her compatriot Sneh Rana only who picked up the big fish for Gujarat, but by then the damage had already been done.

Meanwhile, after winning the toss Gujarat Giants decided to bowl first and picked up the early wicket of Yastika Bhatia in the third over. Windies’ Hayley Matthews and Nat Sciver-Brunt then revived MI’s innings with some beautiful-looking stroke play inside the Powerplay. While Matthews hammered three sixes in addition to scoring five fours in her innings of 47 off 31 balls, England’s Nat Sciver contributed with 23 that included five fours. Joining Harman at the other end, New Zealand’s Amelia Kerr also made her presence felt as she smashed an unbeaten 45 off 24 balls, hitting six fours and a six.

WPL 2023: Mumbai Indians' Harmanpreet Kaur goes berserk, hits 14 fours in her 65 off 30-ball knock

Mumbai Indians captain in the Women’s Premier League Harmanpreet Kaur reckons the introduction of WPL could actually bridge the quality gap between Indian and Australian players. Harman feels by sharing dressing room and rubbing shoulders with some of the top players from across the world, the Indians players can really benefit out it.

Meanwhile, the Indian women’s team recently lost the semi final clash against Australia by a narrow margin of five runs in the recently-held T20 World Cup in South Africa. Before that they went down crashing in the first-ever women’s T20 final in the Commonwealth Games last year too. Not only this, the Indian women’s cricket team lost the 2020 T20 World Cup final against the mighty Aussies as well.

“After the WPL, we are also going to get some good talent and I'm sure the difference you're talking about [between India and Australia sides] we'd love to cut down. When you see good talent coming up, you're definitely going to make a good team after the WPL,” Harmanpreet said during the presser in Mumbai ahead of her side’s first match.

The Indian women’s team captain further said although the Indian players have had the luxury of playing in England and Australia in the WBBL, WPL was something that was missing, and that she’s glad it’s here now. Talking about its importance and what role will it play in shaping up women’s cricket, at least in India, the attacking right-hander said,

“I think this is a great platform for all Indian players because we have been missing this tournament for a long time. Definitely, for Australia and England the WBBL and Hundred have worked very well and after those tournaments they've got so much young talent.”

Harmanpreet Kaur was purchased by the Mumbai Indians franchise in WPL Auction for INR 1.8 crores. Having made her international debut back in 2009, Harman has appeared in 151 T20Is for India, scoring 3058 runs with a highest of 103.

WPL could cut down the quality gap between India and Australia, says Mumbai Indians captain Harmanpreet Kaur

Australian wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy has taken a dig at Harmanpreet Kaur after the Indian captain called her dismissal in the semifinal 'unlucky'. Healy said Kaur could have easily passed the crease, had she put in the effort.

Australian wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy has taken a dig at Harmanpreet Kaur after the Indian captain called her dismissal in the semifinal 'unlucky'. Healy said Kaur could have easily passed the crease, had she put in the effort. "Harmanpreet can say all she likes that it was so unlucky, but I mean at the end of the day she cruised back and probably could have been passed the crease, you know, an extra two metres if she genuinely put in the effort. So we'll take it," said Healy in an interview with ABC Sport. The Australian opener did not hold back her punches and added, "You could say you're unlucky all your life, but it's generally about effort and energy at that moment in time. And I know that's something we speak about in the field in particular is putting in that effort and putting in that energy." "I think that comes back to running between wickets as well. It's doing those little basics better than the opposition and that's how you win big tournaments. And I feel like we've been doing that quite well." WATCH: Harmanpreet Kaur throws her bat after being run out in T20 World Cup semi-final vs Australia Chasing a record total of 173 to cement a place in the finals of the T20 World Cup, India were flying high as Kaur was dismantling the Australian bowlers for fun. After reaching the half-century mark, it looked certain that Kaur would take India home. However, in an attempt to complete the second run, after slog-sweeping the ball to the deep square region, Kaur got her bat stuck in the ground outside the crease. Healy, standing on the stumps made sure that she flicked the bails and appealed to the umpire. The dismissal alone changed the complexion of the game and India fell short by an agonising five runs. WATCH: Anjum Chopra consoles an emotional Harmanpreet Kaur after India's T20 World Cup exit Speaking after the match, Kaur said, "Can't feel unluckier than this! Everything was going in favour of us, but then came my run out. If my bat didn't get stuck, that run would have easily happened. If I had stayed till the last moment, the game would have finished an over before given the momentum we had. "But even after that, Deepti Sharma was there, Richa Ghosh was there. I had belief that they could get the job done. If you have seen the matches till now, Richa had batted brilliantly. But after my dismissal, there were seven or eight dot balls and that was the turning point of the match. Otherwise, we had good momentum and things were going well." 'Harmanpreet can say all she likes': Alyssa Healy takes a dig at Indian captain for her 'unlucky' dismissal

The Indian women’s cricket team suffered a heart-breaking defeat at the hands of Australia in the semis of the ongoing Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa on Thursday. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur made inroads with a brilliant half-century after the Indian team was reduced to three for 28 at one stage in their chase of 173. However, with Kaur getting run-out at the wrong time, it costed India the chance of making it to the finals as they lost the match by just five runs. Speaking to the media after the match, Harman said had she stayed till the end, India would have crossed the line even with an over to spare.

Given the momentum was clearly on India’s side after Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues stitched a stunning partnership, the women’s team looked like breaking Australia’s longstanding streak of reaching the finals of T20 World Cups. But as destiny had its way, Harman’s bat got stuck and she got run out in the 15th over, resulting in break in India’s momentum.

Earlier, Australia elected to bat first after winning the toss and began brilliantly. With contributions from the top three, including a fifty from opener Beth Mooney and a well-made 49 from captain Meg Lanning, Australia posted a healthy total of 172 for four in 20 overs. Whereas, India lost both their openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma early inside Powerplay only before Jemimah and Harman played the rescue act.

Now, with India bowing out of the tournament, Australia will face the winner of England and South Africa in the finals of the Women’s T20 World Cup.
