India gave a tough fight to defending champions Australia but bowed out of the Women's T20 World Cup 2023, in South Africa, with a five-run loss in the first semi-final on Thursday (February 23). Being asked to bowl first, India were rusty as Australia rode on Beth Mooney's 54, captain Mag Lanning's 49* and Ashleigh Gardener's 31 to post 172-4. In reply, India were on course courtesy of Harmanpreet Kaur-Jemimah Rodrigues' 69-run fourth-wicket stand but fell apart to manage 167/8.

After India lost three quick wickets and were tottering at 28 for 3 in pursuit of 173, in Newlands, Cape Town, skipper Harmanpreet and Jemimah revived the run-chase with a confident stand. The duo were going well when Jemimah fell for a good-looking 43, off 24 balls, before the Indian captain got run-out in an unfortunate manner, for a 34-ball 52. After her dismissal, India fell from 133-5, still in a good position with only 40 required off 32 balls, to get restricted for 167 for 8. Hence, the Indian skipper was in tears after the contest.

Anjum Chopra, the former Indian women's captain, met Harmanpreet after the game and hugged a teary-eyed swashbuckling batter. Here's the heartwarming video:

Australia beat India by five runs, on Thursday, in the semifinal of the ICC Women's World T20 in a thrilling finish. Needing 16 runs in the final over, India scored 10 runs as they finished on 167 for 8 to fall behind in another knockout game. Aussie Ashleigh Gardner was adjudged Player of the Match for her 31 runs off 18 balls and 2/37 in four overs.

Chasing 173, Deepti Sharma and Radha Yadav were on the crease in the final over as India managed just five runs off the first three balls. Radha Yadav then was caught off Gardner on the fourth ball, leaving India with the daunting task of needing two sixes to win the game. Shikha Pandey, the new batswoman, however, could manage only a single, and Deepti Sharma finished off with a four, which was too little and too late.

India, at one stage, looked set to run away with the match when skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues were on the crease but eventually fell short, yet again. The duo added 69 runs for the fourth wicket in just 7.2 overs. Rodrigues was the first of them to go back, but not before scoring a valiant 43 off 24 balls. Skipper Kaur, who scored 52 off 34 balls, then was caught short as her bat got stuck while she tried to drag it back in, leaving India five down on 133.

Earlier, being asked to bowl first, India wasn't off to a great start as Alyssa Healy-Beth Mooney stitched a 52-run opening stand. While Healy returned for an unimpressive 26-ball 25, Mooney struck a 37-ball 54 whereas captain Lanning came to her own as the innings progressed and ensured the scoreboard kept ticking. Lanning (34-ball 49*) and Ashleigh Gardner's 18-ball 31 took Australia to a daunting 172 for 4 on a tricky wicket.

The bidding war at the ongoing Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction in Mumbai is on fire as each of the five franchises are ready to break the bank for some of the top names in the game. While Smriti Mandhana created history in a way by becoming the first player ever to be sold in the WPL auction, a lot of other stars from the Indian team have drawn huge money as well. From skipper Harmanpreet Kaur to all-rounder Deepti Sharma, from Sunday game’s hero Jemimah Rodrigues to Under-19 T20 WC winning captain Shafali Verma among others are making headlines too. Indian women’s team captain Harmanpreet Kaur was sold to Mumbai Indians for INR 1.8 crores, whereas, all-rounder Deepti Sharma was purchased by UP Warriorz for a fee worth INR 2.6 crores. Fast bowler Renuka Singh, who emerged on the international scene a couple of years back only, went for INR 1.5 crores to the already star-studded RCB setup. ▶️ Not just from South Africa, we have s̐̈w̐̈e̐̈e̐̈t̐̈ reactions from Himachal too! However, much to the delight of Delhi fans both will be playing for the same camp (Delhi Capitals) in the maiden edition of WPL that begins on March 4th in Mumbai. Delhi looked like breaking the bank for both these future superstars as Jemimah Rodrigues was bought for INR 2.2 crores, whereas, Shafali Verma’s bid touched INR 2 crores. Talking about the all-rounders, Pooja Vastrakar and youngster Harleen Deol went for 60 and 40 lacs, respectively to Gujarat Giants. On the other hand, the Indian keeper-batters had gone for some heavy bucks too. While Mumbai Indians splurged INR 1.5 crores for the 22-year-old Yastika Bhatia, Bangalore-based franchise went two steps ahead and bought in-form Richa Gosh for INR 1.9 crores. Since the day is long and a lot of players are yet to come under the hammer, it would be interesting to see who goes where. WPL Auction: Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma draw huge bids; teams splurge money on keeper-batters

The inaugural Women's Premier League (WPL) auction is underway on Monday (February 13). After Indian opener Smriti Mandhana was bought by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) for INR 3.4 crores, Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur has been roped in by Mumbai Indians (MI) for INR 1.8 crores (INR 18 million). Kaur, known for his captaincy and power-hitting skills, was a big name in the auction and grabbed a lot of eyeballs once her name popped up. MI had to fight hard as they got into a bidding war with Delhi Capitals (DC), UP Warriorz (UW), and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to bag Harmanpreet's services.

Harmanpreet has been a big name in the international circuit. She has been India's T20I captain since 2017 and succeeded Mithali Raj to become the ODI skipper after her international retirement last year. Under Harmanpreet, India reached the 2020 T20 World Cup final and secured a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 edition in Birmingham. She has scored six international hundreds -- five in ODIs and a solitary one in the shortest format -- with a career-best of 171* in the 2017 ODI WC semi-final (versus Australia).

Twitter reacts to India's big win over Pakistan in Women's T20 WC, captain Harmanpreet lauds Jemimah Rodrigues

Former India men's team coach Ravi Shastri, in the latest episode of the ICC Review, has predicted huge things for the Indian women's team in the near future, including a win in the ICC tournaments. The comments come on the back of ICC Women's T20 World Cup where India starts the campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan on February 12 in Cape Town. The former all-rounder said the women in blue are not far away from winning an ICC trophy, and that it could open a pandora box like it did for the Men in Blue when they beat the mighty West Indies in 1983 World Cup final in England.

"I've always said the biggest thing that's going to happen in women's cricket, and the women's team is (not) that far away. I've kept saying it for the last six, eight months (India's women's team) are not that far away from winning a big one," said Shastri. "They've threatened, they've reached finals, they've lost some close games, but they're there.”

“I know what happened in 1983, when we won the World Cup, it opened up a Pandora's Box. The whole look at the game changed, you know, the way players were perceived, the way the game was perceived, the way people wanted. To pack the system, the way the monetisation of the sport changed overnight," he added.

The World Cup winner himself Shastri also seemed hugely impressed with the recent U19 World Cup victory of the women's side led by Shafali Verma and said the victory inspired a lot of young cricketers.

“I see that happening with the women's cricket. Now, under-19 is just a step. It was fabulous to see the way the young girls played, and won. And, especially the final, to beat a team like England, bowl them out for 68 and then do the job was an outstanding achievement and that spurred a lot of young cricketers to take the sport," said Shastri.

Meanwhile, India would be without their ace opener Smriti Mandhana for the marquee clash after the southpaw was ruled out due to a finger injury sustained during a warm-up game against Australia.

I've kept saying it for the last six, eight months (India's women's team) are not that far away from winning a big one," said Shastri. "They've threatened, they've reached finals, they've lost some close games, but they're there.” ALSO READ: WPL: Delhi Capitals appoint Jonathan Batty as head coach, Biju George named fielding coach “I know what happened in 1983, when we won the World Cup, it opened up a Pandora's Box. Women's World T20: Ex-coach Ravi Shastri bullish on India women's chances of winning ICC trophy

The Indian women’s cricket team is geared up for their next challenge – the T20 World Cup that is starting in ten days in South Africa. Taking inspiration from the young girls, who recently created history by winning the maiden edition of the U-19 T20 World Cup, the senior team will like to replicate the similar feat at their level. Upbeat about the challenge ahead, captain Harmanpreet Kaur said she and her team derive motivation from the last edition’s final against Australia at the MCG in 2020. Though they lost the final, the fact that more than 80,000 people came to watch the match live is huge enough for anyone to get overwhelmed by it. Harmanpreet is no less.

Speaking to the ICC ahead of the start of yet another marquee tournament, Harman said, “Our last match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup – the 2020 final at the MCG - was watched by 86,174 spectators! That’s inspiration enough as we prepare to begin our campaign this time.”

“That match, played on International Women’s Day three years ago, was a huge moment for women’s sport worldwide, as the iconic venue filled up for the Australia versus India match with fervour," the star batter added.

Sounding elated while talking about that particular event, Harman said she still gets goosebumps when the thought of that final crosses her mind. Having made her T20 WC debut back in 2009, she has clearly seen the rise of women’s cricket in front of her – and this is something she takes pride in. She added saying, "I still get goosebumps remembering that match as I think of my earlier years on the circuit and realise the kind of progress women’s cricket has made. I have played in all the T20 World Cups so far – in fact I debuted in the format at the inaugural edition in 2009– and have seen the pace of the game surge like anything."

Following a successful 2022 where the women’s team reached the finals of the Commonwealth Games, Harmanpreet feels with the bunch of match winners on the squad this time, they have the potential to end the drought and win their maiden T20 World Cup.

"We have senior players as well as young guns like Shafali Verma and Richa Ghosh, who are fresh from the Indian team’s victory at the Under-19 World Cup, play an attractive brand of cricket and now also have enough experience of top-class cricket. We have depth in batting and enough variety in bowling with Renuka Singh stepping up well in the pace department to do what is required against top teams," Harmanpreet concluded.

Meanwhile, the Indian team is placed in Group B alongside Pakistan, West Indies, Ireland and England, and will face their arch-rivals Pakistan in their opening match on Sunday, February 12th in Newlands, Cape Town.

2022 is coming to an end. The calendar year has been an eventful one for sports lovers across the globe. The cricketing fans have had plenty to cheer for with a plethora of big events passing by. Talking about the Indian cricket team, it was another action-packed year with plenty of highs and some glaring lows. The calendar year is set to end after a few international assignments left for both senior men's and women's teams. Let's have a quick recap of 2022:

Men in Blue in 2022

The year started with India continuing their tour of South Africa. After winning the Boxing Day Test match, Virat Kohli-led India had a 1-0 lead against Dean Elgar-led Proteas and was aiming for an unassailable 2-0 scoreline, which would've meant their maiden Test series triumph in the African nation. The second and penultimate Test started with skipper Kohli ruled out, due to upper back spasm, and KL Rahul led the side as they lost the match by seven wickets.

The same fate followed suit for India in the third and final Test, once again losing by seven wickets, despite Kohli's return. After the series, the 33-year-old dropped a bombshell by resigning as the Test captain. He wrote on Twitter, "It's been 7 years of hard work, toil and relentless perseverance everyday to take the team in the right direction. I've done the job with absolute honesty and left nothing out there. Everything has to come to a halt at some stage and for me as Test Captain of India, it's now."

"There have been many ups and also some downs along the journey, but never has there been a lack of effort or lack of belief. I have always believed in giving my 120 percent in everything I do, and if I can't do that, I know it's not the right thing to do. I have absolute clarity in my heart and I cannot be dishonest to my team," Kohli added.

By then, Kohli's fallout with the top brass at the BCCI had already made the headlines; following the 2021 T20 World Cup and his sacking as the ODI captain in early December. While news channels ran plenty of shows on Kohli vs BCCI alleged spat, Team India embarked upon a new journey under full-time captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid.

With Rohit unfit for the SA ODIs, Rahul led India in three ODIs as the visitors were whitewashed 3-0 with several questions being raised on their outdated approach in the format.

Home comforts

After the miserable SA tour, India switched to home comforts by hosting West Indies in a white-ball series, comprising three T20Is and ODIs each, followed by three T20Is and two Tests versus Sri Lanka. As expected, India stream rolled both the oppositions by whitewashing all four series. Amid injury concerns to Ravindra Jadeja, Rahul, etc., India got busy in preparing a team for the T20 World Cup in Australia.

IPL 2022

The action shifted to the 15th season of IPL in March-May. While top cricketers such as Virat, Rohit, Jadeja, Bumrah, etc. struggled or didn't perform as per expectations, the likes of Umran Malik, Mohsin Khan, Rajat Patidar, Rahul Tripathi, Kuldeep Yadav, Deepak Hooda, etc. made a mark; spoiling the national selectors and team management with more choices for the T20 WC Down Under.

India host South Africa

After the IPL, Team India captaincy became a game of musical chairs. With Rohit rested and KL injured, Rishabh Pant led India in a five-match T20I series which ended in a 2-2 stalemate. Hardik Pandya, Dinesh Karthik, and Harshal Patel were the most impressive.

India tour of Ireland, England

With Rohit and other senior players busy preparing for the one-off Test versus England, i.e. the series finale of the five Tests from the incomplete 2021 tour, Hardik led India in two T20Is against Ireland. Coach Dravid was also involved with the red-ball side, leading NCA chief VVS Laxman to fill in for him in Dublin. India beat the Irish camp 1-0. In the series finale versus England, India was led by pacer Jasprit Bumrah with Rohit ruled out due to Covid concerns.

Under Bumrah, India achieved a sizeable 132-run lead in the Edgbaston face-off, however, failed to defend a challenging 378-run target to lose by seven wickets. After SA, Team India faltered and lost a big opportunity to win a memorable series overseas.

White-ball dominance

After the disappointments of Edgbaston, India played hosts England in three T20Is and ODIs each. The likes of Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik, Rishabh Pant, Bumrah, etc., impressed as Rohit & Co. won both the series 2-1. Post the England trip, India travelled to West Indies with a second-stringed Shikhar Dhawan-led team playing the Windies in three ODIs and winning every game.

In the five T20Is, Rohit returned and led India to a 4-1 series win. The tour saw impressive performances from Shubman Gill, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Surya, Arshdeep Singh, and Ravi Bishnoi.

Asia Cup

After a short tour of Zimbabwe, where Rahul led India to a 3-0 ODI series win, the dress rehearsal began for the T20 WC. With less than two months left, India entirely shifted to the T20 mode with the continental tournament in the UAE. Winning two back-to-back games, India topped their group and proceeded to the Super Four round. After losing to Pakistan in a closely-fought match, the Men in Blue succumbed to a shocking six-wicket loss to eventual winners Sri Lanka and bowed out of the competition without booking a place in the final. It was a big jolt before the ICC event in Australia.

Once again, home series to the rescue!

The Australia and South Africa home series wins worked as a balm following India's Asia Cup debacle. The three T20Is versus Aaron Finch-led Australia was an intense affair where India emerged on top (2-1). The series win was followed by another top-class performance versus the Proteas, winning 2-1 in three T20Is. India had some inconsistency to address at the top, debates continued with regard to one or two spots but the national side left for Australia as the No. 1 ranked side and a strong contender to end their 15-year-long wait for the T20 WC trophy. Nonetheless, they had lost the services of Bumrah and Deepak Chahar due to injury concerns.

Similar issues push India back in the mega event...

India started the tournament by winning a warm-up game versus hosts and defending champions Australia. Their warm-up game versus New Zealand was washed out. On October 23, Rohit-led India played their tournament opener versus arch-rivals Pakistan. In a nerve-wracking contest at the MCG, Melbourne, the one-time winners India rode on Virat Kohli's masterclass 82 to beat Pakistan on the last ball, chasing 160, with four wickets.

Rohit & Co. comfortably beat the Netherlands by 56 runs before losing to South Africa by five wickets in an intense low-scoring thriller at Perth. This followed with a dramatic and controversial win over Bangladesh, by 5 runs (DLS method), before India thrashed Zimbabwe by 71 runs to top their group and storm into the semi-finals.

In the semis, India faced eventual winners England who gave them a reality check. Playing timid cricket with the bat, not backing a seasoned wrist spinner in Yuzvendra Chahal (who warmed the bench in the entire tournament), and lacking spice and variety in their bowling attack led to India's exit as they lost to England by ten wickets while defending a moderate 168/6 in Adelaide.

A new dawn with the 2023 ODI WC in mind

After the T20 WC, India toured NZ for three T20Is and ODIs each. While Hardik led the side in T20Is, winning 1-0, Dhawan & Co. lost the ODIs by same the margin which exposed India's lack of extra bowling options and their muddled approach at the top along with several takers for the middle-order spots. Currently, India is in Bangladesh for the three ODIs and two Tests (having lost the ODIs 2-1 and leading the Test series 1-0 with the final Test on December 22).

Women in Blue in 2022

The senior women's team completely outplayed their male counterparts in the calendar year. India started the year with a tour of New Zealand; a final preparatory series before the 2022 ODI World Cup in the Kiwi land. It was a miserable series with India losing the only T20I and going down in the five ODIs (1-4).

CWC 2022

In Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami's final WC appearance, India never achieved consistency to go all the way. There were some moments of brilliance met by some below-par performances but the Indian eves' Achilles heel remained their knack of succumbing under pressure; leading to an early exit. India beat the likes of Pakistan, Bangladesh, and West Indies but lost against all big teams such as England, NZ, Australia and South Africa to end in the fifth position.

The big retirement

After the World Cup, it was only a matter of time before Mithali would've hung up her boots. On June 08, she announced her international retirement, bringing an end to a stellar career.

In her illustrious 23-year-long international career, Mithali ended with the most runs in women's ODIs (7,805). In 89 T20Is, the 39-year-old returned with 2,364 runs and amassed 699 runs in 12 Tests, comprising a double ton. Under Mithali's leadership, India reached the ODI World Cup final in the 2005 and 2017 editions.

A promising first impression in CWG 2022

Cricket was re-included in the Commonwealth Games during the 2022 edition in Birmingham, England. This was the first time that women's teams competed in the mega event where Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian eves returned with a silver medal. While they once again fell flat in the final hurdle, Harman & Co. impressed enough to end with silver; beating the likes of Pakistan, Barbados, and England but closely losing twice to gold medallists Australia.

Smriti Mandhana, Harman, Jemimah Rodrigues, Renuka Singh, and Sneh Rana were the top performers in India's inspiring campaign.

India create history in England

India toured England for a white-ball series comprising three T20Is and an equal number of ODIs. While the tourists went down in the T20Is, losing 1-2, they created history as the women's team won its first ODI series in England since 1999. Moreover, India went on to whitewash the 2017 champions in their own backyard.

The third and final ODI was, however, marred with controversy as Deepti Sharma running Charlie Dean out became a big talking point. It opened a pandora's box leading to much talk on the spirit of cricket, the laws of the game, etc. Nonetheless, nothing can be taken away from India's clinical performance in the ODIs.

Asia Cup dominance

While their male counterparts failed to even reach the final, Harmanpreet-led India stormed into the summit clash winning six out of seven games. In the final, India thrashed Sri Lanka by eight wickets to win the title for the seventh time. They buried the ghosts of the 2018 edition, in Kuala Lampur, (the only time they missed the glory) to make a strong statement.

Apart from the highs of the women's team and some golden opportunities missed by the Men in Blue, the U-19 boys also shined by winning the ODI World Cup early this year. Overall, it was a mixed bag for the senior men's side along with plenty of highs -- amid the retirements of stalwarts Mithali and Jhulan -- for their women counterparts in 2022.

With some assignments still left, both men's and women's line-ups will hope to end the year on a high as 2023 awaits with a new set of challenges.

Also read: India tour of Bangladesh: Full squads, schedule, timings, telecast - All you need to know Women in Blue in 2022 The senior women's team completely outplayed their male counterparts in the calendar year. India started the year with a tour of New Zealand; a final preparatory series before the 2022 ODI World Cup in the Kiwi land. It was a miserable series with India losing the only T20I and going down in the five ODIs (1-4). CWC 2022 In Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami's final WC appearance, India never achieved consistency to go all the way. The big retirement After the World Cup, it was only a matter of time before Mithali would've hung up her boots. On June 08, she announced her international retirement, bringing an end to a stellar career. Thank you for all your love & support over the years! I look forward to my 2nd innings with your blessing and support. pic.twitter.com/OkPUICcU4u — Mithali Raj (@M_Raj03) June 8, 2022 × In her illustrious 23-year-long international career, Mithali ended with the most runs in women's ODIs (7,805). In 89 T20Is, the 39-year-old returned with 2,364 runs and amassed 699 runs in 12 Tests, comprising a double ton. Under Mithali's leadership, India reached the ODI World Cup final in the 2005 and 2017 editions. A promising first impression in CWG 2022 Cricket was re-included in the Commonwealth Games during the 2022 edition in Birmingham, England. India create history in England India toured England for a white-ball series comprising three T20Is and an equal number of ODIs. Asia Cup dominance While their male counterparts failed to even reach the final, Harmanpreet-led India stormed into the summit clash winning six out of seven games.

Indian women's captain Harmanpreet Kaur had her say on the removal of Ramesh Powar as the team's head coach months before the start of the T20 World Cup.
BCCI is set to host the inaugural edition of the Women's IPL in early 2023. While the itinerary is being readied, it is believed that the first-ever season will kick off in India in March next year, soon after the conclusion of the T20 Women's World Cup and right before the men's IPL. For quite some time, the Women's IPL has been long awaited and the historic tournament is set to get underway next year.

As per a report in Cricbuzz, BCCI is considering a five-team Women's IPL. Unlike in the men's competition, each team will reportedly field as many as five overseas players. Out of the five, four must be from ICC Full Member Nations whereas the remaining one has to be from an Associate Nation.

In addition, BCCI is in talks between two options for selling the IPL franchises: zone wise-North (Dharamsala/Jammu), South (Kochi/Vizag), Central (Indore/Nagpur/Raipur), East (Ranchi/Cuttack), North East (Guwahati) and West (Pune/Rajkot)-with matches to take place at non-IPL venues or existing city-wise as is the case with the men's IPL (Ahmedabad, Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Kolkata-with matches held at IPL venues). Nonetheless, nothing is final in this regard and a final decision will be taken by the IPL chairperson (with the BCCI's current treasurer Arun Dhumal set to take over the post) and the board office bearers in due course of time.

As per reports, a caravan-style itinerary is also being considered for the inaugural edition of the Women's IPL. It means one could see a bunch of matches taking place at a venue before the entire competition will shift to a different venue. IPL 2021 was staged in a similar format, which saw matches being held in Mumbai and Chennai first before the tournament shifted to Delhi and Ahmedabad (prior to the second wave of the Covid-19 virus postponing the tournament and later shifting it entirely to the UAE, in late 2021).

ALSO READ | Shafali Verma and Deepti Sharma take India to Women's Asia Cup final with big win over Thailand As per reports, a caravan-style itinerary is also being considered for the inaugural edition of the Women's IPL. Talking about the Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian eves, they have been on a roll in 2022. After missing out on a semi-final spot in the 2022 Women's World Cup by a whisker, India won a silver medal at the CWG'2022 edition and have now booked a place in the Asia Cup, beating Thailand by 74 runs in the first semi-final on Thursday (October 13). They will now face Sri Lanka in the final, on Saturday (October 15).

What they said

Nida Dar, Player of the Match: It was a slow start for us. Bismah told me we need to get a partnership. It was a good wicket for the batters. I needed to hit to my strong areas. I told her (Bismah) you go for singles and doubles. Last three-four overs, it was low scoring. We need to work on that aspect.

Bismah Maroof: It was an important game for us. We executed well. Nida batted and bowled really well. We just wanted to make a partnership. Nida played a crucial innings and helped us get to a good total. We were looking for gaps. We didn't assess the conditions really well. We all executed the plans well today.

Harmanpreet Kaur: I think in the middle we were trying to give other batters a chance. That cost us today. It was a chaseable target. In the middle overs, we were not able to rotate the strike. For me it is important that whoever is new to the side, they get enough games before the WC. It was a great oppurtunity for others. We don't take any team lightly. It is part of the game. They played good cricket and deserved to win. We need to work on areas and be strong.

Women's Asia Cup: Pakistan end India's winning run, beat arch-rivals by 13 runs in low-scoring contest

Jhulan Goswami's last international match turned out to be a humdinger at Lord's. India took on England in the third and inconsequential tie, of the three ODIs, at the iconic ground with an unassailable lead in the series. With the series already in India women's grasp, they still wanted to give a memorable farewell to the legendary pacer.

Being asked to bat first, India were dismissed for 169 in 45.4 overs with Smriti Mandhana and all-rounder Deepti Sharma scoring half-centuries. From 118-9, England were 153 for 9 before Deepti ran Charlie out. Before the ball was released from Deepti, Charle left the crease -- something she was doing regularly doing her inning -- and paid the price.

'She was taking undue advantage' - Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur on Charlie Dean run-out

India women's cricket team faced England in the third and final ODI, at Lord's, on Saturday (September 24) with a 2-0 lead in their kitty.
Opting to bowl first, England dismissed India for a paltry 169. Smriti Mandhana (50) and Deepti Sharma's 68 were the only stand-out batting performances. Later, the Indian bowlers rose to the occasion and reduced the hosts to 65 for 7. From thereon, Charlotte Dean (47) led her side's recovery before Deepti ran her out as the former kept leaving her crease at the non-striker's end at regular intervals. After resorting to the controversial dismissal, which is within the laws of the game, Deepti addressed the reporters after returning to India.

You know you are only supposed to dislodge one bail of the stumps. So, I think it is pretty baseless. I see no reason why a controversy should be there. It is very much within the laws. It can happen with an Indian player as well tomorrow. If players from other nationalities can run out another, if he or she is backing up. I saw the game. I have seen ball-by-ball. So, I don't know exactly what happened when but it is pretty irrelevant. I don't see any reasoning for being upset with Deepti Sharma or taking away from the fact that it took the sheen from Jhulan Goswami's last game."

ICC had recently announced changes in its playing conditions, confirming that running out a batter on the non-striker's end will no more be called 'Mankading' and will be referred to as run-out. Despite the dismissal of Dean being a perfectly legitimate one, India have been facing criticism from many for not upholding the spirit of the game.

Shut up the pretentious english commentary team! — The Friendly Neighborhood Expert (@madaddie24) September 24, 2022 × Good to see Harmanpreet backing Deepti without holding back and not being apologetic about it. Terrific! — Gurkirat Singh Gill (@gurkiratsgill) September 24, 2022 × The post match presentation of Harmanpreet Kaur makes me so proud as an Indian. The way she understood the situation and backing her player. You earned my respect @ImHarmanpreet — ANSHUMAN (@AvengerReturns) September 24, 2022 × ICC had recently announced changes in its playing conditions, confirming that running out a batter on the non-striker's end will no more be called 'Mankading' and will be referred to as run-out. Despite the dismissal of Dean being a perfectly legitimate one, India have been facing criticism from many for not upholding the spirit of the game. Also Read: WATCH - Jhulan Goswami gets guard of honour from England as she walks out to bat in final match The likes of Stuart Broad, James Anderson and Nasser Hussain among others have criticised India for ending the game in a controversial fashion. However, the Indian fans have backed the team for winning the game while staying within the rules. With their 16-run win in the third ODI on Saturday, India recorded their first-ever clean sweep in ODI series against England away from home.

'I will back my players': Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur's fiery response on Deepti's run-out wins Twitter

A fairy-tale ending befitting her glorious career marked Jhulan Goswami's last waltz as India Women beat England by 16 runs in the third and final ODI to record their first clean sweep in this country. That the feat was achieved at the Mecca of Cricket -- Lord's -- made it doubly satisfying.

Sent into bat, India were all out for a paltry 169, and at that point it looked like the tourists may have fallen many runs short of making the match a memorable one for their legendary seamer, who is calling it quits after two decades of incredible service to the game.

However, the Indians managed to eke out a win as Charlotte Dean (47) was adjudged run out in controversial fashion, for backing up. Dean, who nearly pulled off a stunning win for the hosts after they were reeling at 65 for seven and then 103 for eight, was out of her ground and Deepti Sharma simply held the ball to remove the bails, leaving the English flabbergasted.

Recently, ICC while modifying the playing conditions had moved this kind of dismissal from 'unfair play' to 'run out'. The changes would come into effect from October 1.

On expected lines, the day revolved around the 39-year-old warhorse Jhulan Goswami, who is leaving the scene as women's cricket's highest wicket-taker, having started her journey way back in 2002.

Harmanpreet Kaur, who let Jhulan call the toss in a touching gesture, was unable to hold back her tears, even as the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) planned to name a stand at the Eden gardens after the 'Chakdaha Express'.

She finished with excellent figures of 2/30 in her full quota of 10 overs, including three maiden overs. The competitive Indian has seen the game evolve during her long journey that was marked with some unforgettable moments and few unpleasant days.

While she was not expected to be at her peak in her final series, Jhulan did enough on her own to go out on a high, having bowled tidily in her last three international matches.

She was lucky to have got her first wicket of the day with a short one, her second scalp came when the pacer bowled Kate Cross with her ball number 10,001 in ODIs, again something which no other player has achieved

England captain Amy Jones's decision to field first seemed to have paid dividends as India kept losing wickets at regular intervals to be bundled out in 45.4 overs. India were in deep trouble at 29 for four pretty early into their innings, but then came the revival.

All-rounder Deepti Sharma top-scored for the visitors with an unbeaten 68 off 106 balls, while opener Smriti Mandhana was the second highest scorer, making exactly 50 runs in 79 deliveries.

Barring these two, and Pooja Vastrakar (22), to some extent, none of the Indian batters could make any substantial contribution in the final game of the series, which the tourists had pocketed with wins in the first two matches.

Among England bowlers, medium pacer Kate Cross returned with excellent figures of 4/26, while there were two wickets apiece for Freya Kemp and Sophie Ecclestone.

Shocked by back-to-back reverses in their own den, England entered the game looking to stop the Indian juggernaut and bag a consolation win. When they two teams walked back to the dressing room at the end of the first innings, England looked to be on the right track.

However, after getting off to a steady start England suffered their first blow when Yastika Singh pulled off an excellent stumping to signal the end of Emma Lamb's (21) stay in the middle, the successful bowler being Renuka Singh.

Sophie Ecclestone lasted barely three balls with Gayakwad striking again to leave the hosts tottering at 53 for six in the 15th over.

India win by 3 wickets in Jhulan Goswami's last game to complete first ever series sweep against England

Indian women's cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur was in tears ahead of Jhulan Goswami's final international match at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground in London on Saturday. One of the best fast bowlers in women's cricket history, Goswami announced her retirement from international cricket earlier this year and will be bringing curtains down on her illustrious career after the third ODI between India and England on Saturday.

Ahead of her final international appearance for the Women in Blue, Goswami was felicitated by the Indian women's team. She was presented with a special memento by Harmanpreet before the start of the game. The Indian skipper was seen trying to control her tears while honouring 39-year-old Goswami.

Harmanpreet had made her international debut for India under Goswami's captaincy in 2009. She has now come a long way and is leading the Indian team across formats after Mithali Raj's retirement.

Jhulan Goswami set to retire; India's Lord's ODI vs England to be her final appearance

Led by Harmanpreet Kaur`s fifth ODI century, India women`s cricket team defeated England by 88 runs in the second ODI at the St Lawrence Ground in Canterbury to clinch their maiden limited overs series in the country in 23 years. The Indian skipper registered her second-highest ODI score — an unbeaten 111-ball 143, an innings which included 18 boundaries and four sixes. Harmanpreet's master class hundred powered India to post their all-time second-highest total of 333/5, after being put into bat on September 21. England were in control till the end of 40 overs, but a late surge by India turned into a nightmare for England's young bowling attack.

England got an early breakthrough as Kate Cross cleaned up Shafali Verma cheaply for eight. But Smriti Mandhana and No.3 Yastika Bhatia were quick in recovery. Mandhana didn't hold back on the attack. The southpaw crunched four boundaries and a six and even crossed the 3000 ODI-run mark en route her knock of 40 before she was trapped leg before by Sophie Ecclestone's left-arm spin. She, however, had steadied the innings with two handy partnerships in the company of Yastika Bhatia and Harmanpreet.

At 99 for 3, India still had a lot of build on, and the Indian skipper ensured the momentum wasn't handed over to the hosts. In the company of Harleen Deol, she added 113 runs for the fourth wicket. Lauren Bell got the much-needed breakthrough in the 40th over before witnessing as well as being on the receiving end of Harmanpreet's ballistic onslaught.

Alice Capsey's counter attack helped England pull themselves back from a poor position, but Indian bowlers kept chipping in with wickets quickly. Emma Lamb was trapped leg before by another incoming delivery from Renuka in the eighth over to help India keep control of the proceedings.
ENG v IND: Harmanpreet Kaur's classy 143 propels India to maiden ODI series win in England

India posted a record total with the help of the Indian captain`s fifth ODI century and Harleen Deol`s maiden ODI fifty in the second ODI match of the series against England on Wednesday. Captain Harmanpreet led from the front and played an innings of a lifetime helping India set a record chase for England. India ended their first innings with 333 runs with the help of brilliant innings from Kaur, Harleen Deol and Mandhana.

After being invited to bat first by England, India lost opener Shafali Verma in the second over, as the batter once again failed to secure a big inning. The batter struck two boundaries in the first over and looked set for a big score but was clean bowled by Kate Cross. Kate made an excellent start to her 50th ODI, dismissing Shafali in her first over for eight runs, leaving India at 12/1 in the second over of the match.

Yastika Bhatia made her way to the crease and stitched an important 54-run partnership with the in-form Smriti Mandhana to deny any wicket to the hosts till the 10th over, taking the score a healthy 60/1 at the 10-over mark. Both the batters kept the scoreboard ticking at a good rate, scoring boundaries regularly. Mandhana in the process also completed 3000 ODI runs and became the fastest Indian woman to get there. Charlotte Dean then dismissed Yastika Bhatia in the 12th over to give England a much-needed breakthrough, as the pair looked threatening to take the game away from the hosts. Dean took a superb catch of her own bowling to dismiss Bhatia for a score of 26 from 34 deliveries and left India at 66/2 in the 12th over of the innings.

The wicket of Bhatia brought the Indian captain at the wicket. She was involved in a 33-run stand with Mandhana, before Sophie Ecclestone stuck the pad of the opener. Smriti missed the ball while attempting a sweep, which saw her downfall in the 20th over. The southpaw played yet another handy knock of 40 runs from 51 deliveries, involving one six and four boundaries. Indian total at the end of the 20th over was 104/3, with Harleen Deol joining the Indian captain. The duo resorted to an attacking approach and did not allow the English bowlers to settle down with their line and lengths. Both the batters played some eye-pleasing shots and took the Indian total over the 200-run mark in the 40th over. Kaur reached her half-century in style as she deposited the ball over the mid-wicket boundary with her signature slog sweep shot. The Indian captain clinched her 18th ODI fifty in the 37th over of the match of Dean`s bowling.

Kaur and Deol shared a 113-run stand for the fourth wicket to put India in the driver`s seat.

At the 40-over mark, India's score read 212/4 setting a tremendous platform for the batters to exploit the last phase of the match. Pooja Vastrakar joined Kaur who looked determined to plunder the English bowlers at the fag end of the innings. Vastrakar played aggressive shots along with the captain to take India past the 250-run mark in the 45th over. Both players put their foot down on the pedal and looked to score quick runs, dismantling the English attack. India all-rounder Vastrakar lost her wicket to Freya Kemp in an attempt to score boundaries in the 46th over. Kaur kept going and notched her fifth century in ODIs with a single of Ecclestone in the 47th over.

The batter scored her second century as the Indian captain. Freya Kemp was taken to the cleaners, as gave away 26 runs in the 48th over, with both Deepti Sharma and Kaur sending the ball over the boundary four times. The second last over of the inning yielded 17 runs as the Indian captain hit Ecclestone for a six and two boundaries.
Since 2018, BCCI has been organising the Women's T20 Challenge. What started as a one-off exhibition match between two teams in the first season is now a three-team competition. Many players from outside India have also joined the competition. But despite this, the clamour to have a much bigger competition just like men's IPL is growing among players and fans for a while.

Earlier in February this year, Ganguly had stated that the women's IPL would be held next year. "We are at the level of formulation to have a full-fledged WIPL. It is certainly going to happen. BCCI keeps window in March 2023 for first-ever Women's IPL

Former Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin slammed the Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian women's cricket team after their defeat against Australia in the gold medal match at the Commonwealth Games 2022 on Sunday (August 07). The Indian women's team lost the final against Australia by 9 runs after failing to chase down the target of 162 runs in 20 overs.

India got off to a poor start in the summit clash as they lost both their openers Smriti Mandhana (6) and Shafali Verma (11) cheaply to be reeling at 22/2 inside the first three overs. However, captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Jemimah Rodrigues then joined forces in the middle to help the Women in Blue fight back with a 96-run stand for the second wicket.

While Harmanpreet slammed a brilliant 65 off 43 balls, Rodrigues scored a run-a-ball 33. While it seemed the duo would take India home comfortably, they ended up throwing away their wickets in quick succession as India lost the plot towards the end to eventually fall short in the run chase.

Rubbish batting, no common sense: Mohammad Azharuddin slams India after CWG final defeat against Australia

The Indian women's cricket team once again succumbed to the big stage fright to suffer a nine-run defeat against the mighty Australia in the gold medal match of the Commonwealth Games here on Sunday. The 'Women In Blue' lost the battle of nerves and also the last five wickets for 13 runs with some poor strategic moves and even more atrocious shot selections leaving a lot to be desired.

Losing like winning is also a habit and in the end, the self-belief of the Southern Stars prevailed with the opposition taking a lot of pressure on themselves. Beth Mooney (61 off 41) made a stroke-filled half century as Australia managed to reach 161 for eight despite a spirited fielding effort from India.

With 50 needed off the last six overs with eight wickets in hand, and Harmanpreet (65 off 43) in the middle of a special innings, it should have been a straightforward chase for India.

However, India found a way to fluff it as they lost eight wickets for 32 runs to come short in a major final once again. India's inexplicable batting collapse was also reminiscent of their failure in the 2017 ODI World Cup final in England.

Sharing an 96-run stand after the fall of openers, Harmanpreet and Jemimah Rodrigues (33 off 33) were controlling the chase but the latter's dismissal triggered the collapse. The batters manufactured ways to get dismissed with innings including three run outs. India were eventually bowled out for 152 with three balls left.

The shots that Harmanpreet and Jemimah played were also questionable but they could not be solely blamed for the abject surrender. It was between 14.3 overs and 15.5 overs, a space of nine deliveries that India lost the game with Jemimah being bowled by Megan Schutt and Harmanpreet playing a suicidal lap-scoop off Ashleigh Gardner which was brilliantly pouched by an alert Alyssa Healy.

Deepti Sharma going for a non-existent second run and Concussion sub Yastika Bhatia being sent after Radha Yadav were questionable decisions taken by coach Ramesh Powar and skipper Harman.

A silver medal finish was still a creditable one for India who beat England in the semi-finals on Saturday. It can also be said the women's cricket debut at the Commonwealth Games was largely a success. A packed house at Edgbaston witnessed the first-ever final in CWG.

Earlier, Australia opted to bat on a bright and sunny afternoon. Renuka Singh, the stand-out pacer for India in this tournament, once again provided an early breakthrough by trapping the dangerous Alyssa Healy leg before with a delivery that moved in a shade.

The Indians went for the DRS in the last second and it was successful. Mooney (61 off 41)and skipper Meg Lanning (36 off 26) then stitched a 78-run stand and once again it seemed Australia would bat India out of the game like they had done in the T20 World Cup final couple of years ago.

Lanning made her intent clear as she dispatched a length ball off Renuka over mid off for the first six of the match.
The Indian fielders who are often criticised had a fine day in the middle. It started with a close run out of Lanning and included two fine catches from Deepti Sharma and Radha Yadav.

Deepti plucked one off the right hand to get rid of a well set Mooney while Radha took a low diving catch at backward point to dismiss Tahlia McGrath, who played the game despite testing positive for COVID-19.

Australia looked set for a 180 plus total but India fought back in the last five overs taking five wickets for 35 runs.
Renuka ended with tidy figures of 2 for 25 in four overs while fellow pacer Meghna Singh was under bowled as India used seven bowling options.

Sneh Rana (2/38) was the most expensive bowler who bowled their full quota but took two crucial wickets of Mooney and Ashleigh Gardner.
