Injuries across Europe's top five leagues rose by 20 per cent in the 2021/22 season, according to a study published on Wednesday, as arguments intensify over football's congested calendar ahead of the World Cup.

The study by insurance brokers Howden found clubs paid a record-high price for injuries of £513 million ($550 million) last season. Injury cost was calculated by multiplying the cost per day of a player by the number of days they were unavailable because of an injury.

World players' union FIFPRO says structures must be put in place to limit player workloads. For the first time this year a European campaign will be interrupted by a mid-season World Cup, causing further fixture congestion either side of the tournament in Qatar, which starts on November 20.

European governing body UEFA has increased the number of competitive games with the addition of the Nations League to the international schedule and is expanding European club competitions from 2024. World governing body FIFA is set to follow suit, with the World Cup expanded to 48 teams from 2026.

The Premier League had the highest injury cost of any of the top five divisions at nearly £185 million, with La Liga in Spain a distant second on £109 million. French champions Paris Saint-Germain had the highest injury cost of any club in Europe at £34 million.

Injuries in the Premier League were up to 1,231 in 2021/22, compared to 938 the season before. The permanent adoption of five substitutions per side by football's lawmakers IFAB is designed to lessen the load on players.

But FIFPRO is urging FIFA to go further by mandating minimum rest periods of four weeks in the off-season and a mid-season break of two weeks for each player.

Welsh actor Michael Sheen's oration skills were lauded by many once again as he gave a stirring speech to the Wales football team ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2022 later this year. Sheen, who has been a football fan all his life, showcased his passion for the country with some inspiring lines for the Wales players.

Sheen met the Wales players in their dressing room during a visit to their training facility earlier this week. He was presented a Wales shirt before he told the players he won't able to come to see them play in Qatar in the World Cup later this year. However, the actor said he would give them something which they can take with them to the World Cup.

"I couldn't come and see you and not give you something to go with. I'll try and customise what I did before and give you something to take with you," said Sheen before composing himself to produce one of the best dressing room speeches in the game.

'A red storm is coming to Qatar': Michael Sheen's inspiring speech to Wales ahead of FIFA World Cup 2022

Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo had expressed his desire to leave the Premier League giants this summer and was exploring his options as he reportedly wanted to join a club competing in the Champions League. However, a move away from Old Trafford didn't materialise for the Portuguese forward, who has struggled to start gamed for United under new manager Erik Ten Hag in the ongoing season.

The 37-year-old, who is regarded as one of the greatest of all time, was linked with a move to a number of top European clubs, including the likes of Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid among others. However, no top club showed interest in roping in the Manchester United star, who is in the final lap of his career.

Ronaldo was also linked with a shock move to Saudi club Al-Hilal, who reportedly made a stunning offer to the Portuguese legend. As per reports, the Saudi club were ready to pay United a £25m transfer fee for Ronaldo and were offering the Portuguese a two-year contract worth £2 per week which would have made him the highest-paid footballer in the world by a fair distance.

While reports claimed Ronaldo declined the move as he wanted to play for a club competing in the Champions League, AL-Hial's president Fahad ben Nafel has claimed the deal was close and it fell through only because of a transfer ban on the Saudi club.

Ben Nafel said the money was never a problem and they had negotiations with Ronaldo but the club was unsure about finalising the move until the ban was lifted.

"Yes, we negotiated with Ronaldo. The problem was not in the money or the principle. Al-Hilal is able to bring in the stars of the world, but it was in the decision of the Sports Arbitration Center that prevented us from registering the players," Ben Nafel told YouTube channel Thamanya.

"We did not stop negotiating with the players despite the decision to ban, but we were delaying entering the final stage of the negotiations until the ban was lifted," he added.

Al-Hilal were handed a transfer ban in May this year after club's midfielder Mohamed Kanno, who had agreed a deal to join rival club Al-Nassr as a free agent made a u-turn on his decision and signed a contract extension. While Kanno was handed a four-month suspension, Al-Hilal were banned from signing players in the summer window.

Ronaldo, on the other hand, has struggled to find his rhythm at United this season having scored just one goal across competitions so far. He is yet to break the deadlock in the Premier League despite United having played six matches with four wins under their belt.

'Problem was not the money': Saudi club Al Hilal's president opens up on failed move for Cristiano Ronaldo

Indian football team captain Sunil Chhetri is one of the greatest to have played for the country. Chhetri, who made his debut for the Indian team in 2005, had begun his professional career at Indian club Mohun Bagan in 2002. He went on to play for some of the best Indian clubs throughout his career and is currently playing his trade for Bengaluru FC in the Indian Super League (ISL).

'Captain fantastic': FIFA honours Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri with docuseries on his career

Lionel Messi has had a brilliant start to the ongoing 2022-23 season for his club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and has continued his fine form for Argentina ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2022. The Argentine maestro was on top of his game as he helped the Albiceleste thrash Jamaica 3-0 in a friendly on Wednesday.

Messi bagged a sublime brace following Julain Alvarez's opener to seal a comfortable victory for Argentina. Messi's presence on the pitch had the fans on the edge of their seats throughout the game at the Red Bull Arena in New Jersey as the American football fans got to witness the master working his magic on the football pitch.

One of the best to have ever played the game, Messi enjoys staggering popularity across the globe and it was no different in the US on Wednesday. A fan invaded the pitch during Argentina's clash against Jamaica to meet the PSG superstar and get an autograph from him on his bare back.

However, the fan's unexpected meeting could have turned freakish for Messi, who was nearly taken down by the security as the officials attempted to knock down the pitch invader. Messi obliged to sign the fan's bare back but was interrupted midway as the security officials tried to get a hold of the fan, and ended up nearly pushing the Argentina captain to the ground in the process.

The mother of the Everton fan whose phone was smashed by Cristiano Ronaldo has demanded the 'right punishment' for the Manchester United star. Ronaldo had slapped a phone out of a 14-year-old Everton fan's hand last season after Manchester United lost 1-0 against the Toffees at Goodison Park.

14-year-old Jacob, an autistic Everton fan was trying to capture Ronaldo when the Man Utd star was walking down the tunnel after his team's defeat. However, much to his shock, the Portuguese forward smashed the phone out of Jacob's hands leaving him with a broken phone and bruised hand.

The Manchester United star was recently charged for the incident by the Football Association. The Man Utd star had also been cautioned by the police in August earlier this year when questioned about the incident which had taken place in April. Ronaldo had apologised for his behaviour at the time and had also invited the fan to watch a game at Old Trafford.

However, his mother Sarah Kelly is not happy with Ronaldo 'getting away' and has demanded the 'right punishment' for the Manchester United star stating that his behaviour was unacceptable. She claimed her son still hasn't had his phone back.

“Let's hope he finally gets the right punishment. He can't keep getting away with it. His behaviour is unacceptable. I'm being hounded by people saying I'm dragging it up again but I didn't know anything about it. He should have been dealt with six months ago. My son talks about what happened to him every day. “He should have paid for that. He's the one who caused all this. It baffles me – he can assault a child and carry on as normal. How can he sleep at night knowing the distress he has caused to a young fan," she added.

When asked about Ronaldo's offer to meet the young fan and his family, Kelly said nothing has been put in place for a visit to Old Trafford. She said Ronaldo apologised but he said he didn't do anything wrong which felt like an insult to the family.

India suffered a 0-3 thrashing at the hands of a higher-ranked Vietnam in the second and final match of the Hung Thinh Friendly Football Tournament here on Tuesday.

It was a reality check for the 104th ranked Indians after three convincing wins in June in the Asian Cup qualifiers and a 1-1 draw against Singapore in this tournament on Saturday as they were literally outplayed by the 97th-ranked Vietnam in the second half.

Phan Van Duc (10th), Nguyen Van Toan (49th) and Nguyen Van Quyet (70th) scored for Vietnam to no reply from the Indians whose defenders had a mediocre outing, especially in the second half.

The Indians, however, were on equal terms with their opponents in the first half only to be blown away in the second session. Vietnam won the tournament with two wins from as many matches. They had also thrashed Singapore 4-0 in their opening match.

India and Vietnam had played many a memorable matches in the past, one among them being the 2002 LG Cup final which India triumphed 3-1 having come back from behind to win the trophy. India and Vietnam last met in 2010 in an international friendly in Pune with the Blue Tigers running out 3-1 winners with Chhetri scoring a hat-trick.

But since then, Vietnam football has been on the ascendancy and they have been able to compete with the top teams of the continent. Earlier this year, they reached the final round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and also made it to the last eight stage of the 2019 Asian Cup.

The home side did not take long to surge ahead with Phan Van Duc finding the target in the 10th minute. The goal, though, could have been avoided had keeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu and central defender Sandesh Jhingan communicated well.

Both Gurpreet and Jhingan, who was in the starting eleven after sitting out the last match due to late arrival on account of visa issues, went for the ball off a corner but the Indian goalie could lay his hands on it. Jhingan's header somehow fell in the middle of the Indian box and Van Duc's sharp left-footer bulged the net even as Gurpreet managed a faint touch.

Just a minute before the strike, Gurpreet had to dive full stretch to his right to save another shot from a Vietnam attacker.

Vietnam went on the offensive but India also gradually came to their own and they had two clear scoring chances in the first half, courtesy fine assists from Akash Mishra who was superb on the left channel.

In the 26th minute, Mishra was in the thick of an Indian counter-attack and he sent a superb pass to Ashique Kuruniyan, at the edge of Vietnam box on left side. Kuruniyan's volley beat the goalie but went inches wide off the Vietnam far post.

Even closer than Kuruniyan's effort was that of skipper Sunil Chhetri just before the half time whistle was blown.
Mishra chipped one from the wide left for Chhetri, who guided his header towards the far post, but missed it by a whisker. The veteran striker reacted with disbelief with hands on his head.

Vietnam pressed hard just as they came out after resumption and they had a couple of shots at the Indian goal. The second goal from Vietnam came four minutes after resumption as Nguyen Van Toan won an aerial duel with Anwar Ali and then beat Gurpreet with a shot.

By the 65th minute, head coach Igor Stimac substituted Chhetri, Udanta Singh, Chinglensana with Brandon Fernandes, Liston Colaco and Roshan Singh but there was no change in India's fortune with Vietnam scoring their third five minutes later.

Van Quyet was gifted the ball from a headed clearance inside the Indian box and he curled it past Gurpreet to punish the visitors for yet another defensive sloppiness.

Harry Maguire seems to have lost the plot at Manchester United as his form continues to slump after a disastrous start to the ongoing season. The United captain was dropped by manager Erik Ten Hag after just a couple of games into the season as Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez formed a solid partnership at the back, helping United remain unbeaten in the Premier League since being deployed as the first-choice centre-back pairing.

Maguire was hoping for a revival after he was picked for England by manager Gareth Southgate, who has continuously backed the Man Utd skipper when it comes to the national team. However, the defender failed to turn a corner as his poor run continued in the Nations League.

Maguire made two costly errors against Germany on Monday resulting in two goals as England had to come from behind to draw 3-3 at Wembley in the Nations League. England ended their campaign in the tournament without a win with Maguire facing intense criticism from all corners for his horror show at the back.

Amid widespread criticism for the England defender, England and Liverpool great Jammie Carragher has urged Maguire to leave United at the end of the season. The former Liverpool defender believes Maguire's time at United is all but over and he should be looking for a way out of Old Trafford.

"My question to Maguire is this: "Do you still have that same fury in you?" Carragher wrote in his column in Daily Telegraph.

"Too often, it looks as if the weight of the world is on his shoulders, like he is a startled bunny more than the authoritative centre-back he was. I think it is too late at club level. I wrote last year he was fighting for his Manchester United career. He needs this to be his final season at Old Trafford and start afresh," he added.

Maguire has been targeted by several United fans on social media over the past few months for his poor performances on the pitch which has also led to the England defender earning sympathy from many. However, Carragher warned Maguire that sympathy is not going to get him anywhere and it is the performances on the pitch that will matter.

"Now it is England's problem. When I watched Maguire in the last two games, I felt sorry for him. But that is not a good look for any sports person.

"Sympathy will not get him back where he was two years ago," wrote Carragher.

Maguire faces a herculean task to regain his spot in United's line-up amid formidable challenges from Varane and Martinez. With the World Cup approaching, it remains to be seen if the England centre-back will manage to turn a corner.

Part one of the healing process is complete for Italy. Looking to regain respect after failing to qualify for a second straight World Cup, the Azzurri advanced to next year's finals tournament in the Nations League by winning at Hungary 2-0 thanks to goals by Giacomo Raspadori and Federico Dimarco on Monday.

By topping a group also containing England and Germany, the Italians joined the Netherlands and Croatia in qualifying for the final four, which will be hosted by the Dutch in June. Portugal or Spain will complete the lineup when they face off on Tuesday.

Unlike Italy, England and Germany will be going to the World Cup in Qatar in less than two months and they'll head to the Middle East on the back of a wild 3-3 draw at Wembley Stadium, where all the goals were scored in the second half.

Trailing 2-0, England scored three goals in a 12-minute span from the 71st through Luke Shaw, Mason Mount and Harry Kane's penalty only for Kai Havertz to pounce on a fumble by England goalkeeper Nick Pope to equalize in the 87th.

England's winless run stretched to six games, with Gareth Southgate's team finishing its Nations League campaign without a victory and relegated. Germany isn't in much better shape ahead of the World Cup, with just one win in its last seven games.

Italy won Group A3 with 11 points, one more than Hungary, which went into the game in Budapest needing only a draw to reach the Nations League final four for the first time.

The Italians are finding it easier to qualify for Nations League finals than World Cups. They also got to the 2021 tournament, losing to Spain in the semifinals on home soil in their first few months as the reigning European champion.

Plenty has changed in the team since beating England in the European Championship final at Wembley last year, not least up front where Raspadori is making his mark.

Three days after scoring the winner against England in Milan, the Napoli striker put Italy ahead after Adam Nagy's back-pass came up short. Wilfried Gnonto challenged goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi for the ball, which bounced free and Raspadori was alert to round Gulacsi and convert his finish in the 27th.

Gianluigi Donnarumma produced a string of diving stops, including a triple save in a matter of seconds, before Nicol Barella played a ball through at the other end to Bryan Cristante, who crossed for Dimarco to score from close range for his first goal for Italy.

Late pressure from Hungary failed to yield a goal. "We were excellent for 70 minutes, the last 20 I didn't like too much," Italy coach Roberto Mancini said.

"We're happy, it's important to have reached the Nations League final four for the second time."

Under pressure for his starting place in England's team, Harry Maguire didn't help his cause against Germany.
The Manchester United center back was at fault for Germany's 52nd-minute opener from the spot by Ilkay Gundogan.

Maguire initially gave the ball away to Jamal Musiala, then clumsily fouled the teenager in the area moments later and was then dispossessed in midfield to allow the Germans to break, culminating in a curling finish from the edge of the area by Havertz.

Maguire has lost his starting spot at United but Southgate has retained his faith in the defender, who typically plays better for his country than his club. It was a tough night all around for England's center backs, with John Stones forced off with a suspected hamstring injury.

England did well to fight back, with Kane's penalty taking him to 51 goals for England, two off Wayne Rooney's national record, but yet another mistake proved costly.

Pope, filling in for the injured Jordan Pickford, spilled Serge Gnabry's weak shot and Havertz was on hand to tap in from close range.

"A couple of errors have cost us the goals," Southgate said. "But I'll focus on the fact they played with tremendous spirit and showed a belief that we haven't shown in the last few games."

There was a well-observed period of silence before kickoff as a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, who died this month.

Last year saw Lionel Messi being forced to part ways with FC Barcelona. Many closely followed the Messi transfer news, which made heads turn in the football fraternity, before the Argentina captain joined Paris Saint Germain (PSG) as a free agent. Many had high hopes from him to hit the ground running in his first-ever season in France, in a club filled with some big names, but the 35-year-old had an underwhelming debut season in PSG.

Messi ended with only 11 goals for PSG across all competitions in the 2021-22 season. While he has begun the new season on a high with four goals from seven appearances, the Argentine star admitted that it was tough for him to shift from Barcelona to PSG.

“Last year was difficult for me, it was hard after a very big change, after being in the same place for so long,” he said in an interview with Diario AS.

The defeat against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League was a big jolt to PSG's campaign in the last season. Croatia and the Netherlands booked their places in the last four of the Nations League as holders France needed a favour to avoid relegation from the top tier on Sunday.

Les Bleus lost 2-0 in Denmark to finish with just one win from their six group games, but Croatia's 3-1 win at Austria saved the world champions from the drop. Didier Deschamps will be hoping to have a number of key men back from injury by the time France's defence of the World Cup begins against Australia on November 22.

"It was a young French team, which for the most part does not yet have experience of the highest level," said Deschamps.

"Tonight is a dose of reality and what will be waiting for us in two months."

France will also come up against the Danes in the group stage in Qatar and the Euro 2020 semi-finalists showed they are more than capable of causing more trouble in two months' time.

Both goals came before half-time as Kasper Dolberg stretched to turn home Mikkel Damsgaard's cross before Andreas Skov Olsen volleyed in from the edge of the area. France were without Hugo Lloris, Jules Kounde, N'Golo Kante, Paul Pogba, Ousmane Dembele and Karim Benzema through injury.

Defeat relegated Austria to League B.

The Netherlands made sure of top spot in Group A4 with a 1-0 win over Belgium thanks to Virgil van Dijk's header 17 minutes from time. The Dutch just needed to avoid defeat by a three-goal margin after winning 4-1 in Brussels earlier in the group.

"Tonight is a dose of reality and what will be waiting for us in two months." Croatia, Netherlands reach Nations League semi-finals as France survive relegation

Portugal stormed to a 4-0 win over the Czech Republic in their Nations League A-Group 2 match on Saturday thanks to a Diogo Dalot double and strikes by Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Jota.

The victory sets up a crunch clash for the Portuguese on Tuesday at home to Spain, who lost 2-1 to visitors Switzerland, knowing a draw will be enough to reach the final four. Portugal lead the group on 10 points ahead of Spain on eight after five matches with one game left to play.

"It's a unique feeling to be able to help my country," said Dalot. "We knew it could be a difficult game if we hadn't started with the right attitude.

"We started the game very well, controlling the ball, and after the goals the spaces started to open up a little... Congratulations to everyone, we really deserved this victory and now it's time to recharge our batteries."

Ronaldo needed treatment early on after a being caught in the face by goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik but soldiered on.

The Portuguese controlled possession and opened the scoring in the 33rd minute when Rafael Leao swung a cross into the area and Dalot fired past goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik.

Ronaldo missed a chance to double the lead before Fernandes put the visitors further ahead in first-half added time when he surged into the box and converted a cross from close range. Ronaldo then conceded a penalty for handball but Patrik Schick blazed the spot kick over the bar just before the break.

Dalot netted his second goal soon after the interval with Jota rounding out the scoring in the 82nd minute to leave the 2019 winners in pole position to reach the semi-finals.

"The Czechs have a good team, but we were well prepared for them and executed our game plan perfectly. After the third goal the game was done," said Portugal coach Fernando Santos.

Diogo Dalot bags brace as Portugal cruise to 4-0 win over Czech Republic in Nations League

Spain suffered a 2-1 defeat by Switzerland as goals from Manuel Akanji and Breel Embolo knocked the hosts off the top of Nations League A-Group 2 on Saturday with one game left to play.

The Swiss held firm against last year's finalists for most of the game and handed their rivals only their second home loss in almost 20 years and their first in Spain since 2018.

The Spaniards are now in second place on eight points, having been leapfrogged by Portugal, who breezed past Czech Republic 4-0 away to reach 10 points.

Cristiano Ronaldo's side will make the final four with at least a home draw in Tuesday's crunch game against Spain, who must win in Braga to qualify for the semi-finals.

Switzerland are third on six points, two above than Czechs who they will face on Tuesday in a battle to avoid relegation.

Akanji opened the scoring with a header from a corner in the 21st minute, but Jordi Alba equalised for the hosts with a cross-shot from a counter-attack 10 minutes after the break.

Three minutes later, however, Embolo got the winner with a close-range strike from a corner after Akanji flicked the ball towards the six-yard-box where the striker turned it goalwards.

"We played against rivals that were really aggressive, pressing, physically very strong, who prevented us from playing our style of soccer," Spain coach Luis Enrique told TVE.

"We were not on target, really erratic, the worse I can remember since I've been coaching this team. "We need to fix that because now we have a final at Portugal. We need to go there and win. There is no other way."

Despite having 70% possession, Spain lacked energy for most of the match and barely posed a threat to Yann Sommers goal until Alba scored with their first shot on target.

The Swiss were comfortable sitting back and waiting for a pedestrian Spain who were unimaginative on an uninspired night for their highly-rated Barcelona midfielders Pedri and Gavi.

It was not until very late in the second half that the hosts created chances but they were kept out by Sommer who made two critical saves to deny substitutes Marcos Llorente and Borja Iglesias.

Nearly 2,000 Liverpool fans to sue UEFA over Champions League final fiasco

India is a sport-loving country. While cricket continues to rule the hearts of many across the nation, many other sports have also risen in popularity in recent years. Football is rising at a rapid pace but still has miles to cover to make an impact globally. The likes of Sunil Chhetri, Indian football captain, goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu and the likes have created a strong base, but many of their young followers need to stand tall and help the country's football to make a strong impact worldwide.

Andre Villas-Boas -- football manager and Laureus ambassador -- is one of the youngest top-flight managers who won the Europa League with FC Porto at 33. The game has been associated with him over the years. Recently, he got a chance to interact with underprivileged kids during his three-day visit to India -- and spoke at length on the future of the game in the country during an exclusive interaction with Wion Sports' Editor Digvijay Singh Deo.

After conducting a masterclass for the young small children of Delhi, the former Chelsea manager Andre revealed how his meeting went with the young kids. "Emotionally, it was very very rewarding for me. Hope it was the same for them. I'm thankful for the work done by Slum Soccer for these kids in India. I'm humbled and honoured. In such difficult circumstances they live, without infrastructure, and these 30 kids are still able to enjoy themselves. Put out the best skills they have. Not only technical skills but also cooperation, leadership and communication are some important tools they can take into their future. I thank Slum Soccer once again and Laureus for the work they do. We need more and more to change other people's lives."

During his visit to Delhi, Andre caught up with young football fan Jatin, a goalkeeper for his local football club - Rurka Kalan. Their mutual love for football made them connect instantly and Jatin got a chance to interact with the former Chelsea manager, a moment he will not forget for quite some time.

Jatin earned the chance to meet Andre after winning a unique drawing competition, which featured hundreds of participants from around the world. The young Indian fan's design will now be engraved on the back of the 16th special edition timepiece that Swiss luxury watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen has launched in collaboration with Laureus Sport for Good.

“I am really excited to be in India to meet Jatin and the young people from Slum Soccer. It’s wonderful to think that the watch which Jatin helped to design will contribute to raising awareness for Laureus. It was a great honour recognising Jatin as the winner of the competition and we enjoyed talking about football during our time together.

I am also thinking of all the other young people, like Jatin, who are in Laureus programmes around the world, similar to Slum Soccer here in New Delhi, and who are benefiting from the experience. This is a brilliant and unique initiative and I would like to thank Laureus Global Partner IWC sincerely for their support," Andre said about his interaction with the young fan.

Football is certainly one of the most accessible sports to play. On being asked if he feels Indian football needs that push as, despite the population, India has not reached the levels it should have, Andre pointed out that we need to tap into the talent.

"I think you need a lot of reforms. I know a lot of Portuguese have come here for the stars league that you (India) have proposed. I spoke to them before coming and they told me to make the most of the experience. You need to create a culture. You need to get the football into schools, into kids' heads so that they idolise their heroes and try to emulate them. The Ronaldos and the Messis. But you need the infrastructure and conditions. You guys have enough technical skills, you just need to work on it."

The population of India surely indicates that there is no dearth of talent across any field. Thus, hopes for high for Indian football and the youngsters joining the game to take it to a level that it has never reached as yet.

ALSO READ | Manchester United report loss of £115.5m for 2021/22 season Football is certainly one of the most accessible sports to play. You guys have enough technical skills, you just need to work on it." The population of India surely indicates that there is no dearth of talent across any field. Thus, hopes for high for Indian football and the youngsters joining the game to take it to a level that it has never reached as yet.

The UEFA Nations League continues to provide a lot of action and drama for the football fans worldwide. As the league enters another day of exciting international contests, it will be a rematch of Euro 2020 final as England will take on Italy, in Milan, whereas Germany will square off with Hungary in Group 3.

As top teams such as England, Italy and Germany are placed in the same group, it is Hungary who find themselves at the top spit with two wins from four encoutners so far. Thus, they will hope to continue to move forward in a similar manner with an impressive performance versus the Germans.

While Italians will like to get the better of Harry Kane-led England once again, post the Euro Cup final last year, Germany will aim for the top spot with a win over Hungary. For England, they remain winless in the tournament and even a win over Italy won't help them finish on top of the group standings.

Spanish media has recently reported that part of the women's national team wanted coach Jorge Vilda to be sacked. The RFEF on Thursday published a statement saying that 15 players had sent them the same email of resignation. "They state the current situation generated affects them 'significantly' in their 'emotional state' and their 'health' and that 'as long as it is not reversed', they are resigning from the national team of Spain," the federation announced.

Condemning the players for questioning "the continuity of the national coach", RFEF said they will not "call up players who do not want to wear the Spain shirt".

"The Federation will only use committed players, even if it means playing with youth players. It is an unprecedented situation in the history of soccer, both men's and women's, in Spain and worldwide," it said.

Premier League clubs have agreed to give pitch-invading fans a minimum one-year ban from their team's home and away matches. Supporters who are found guilty of entering the pitch without permission or using smoke bombs and other pyrotechnics will receive the automatic 12-month suspension.

The bans could also be extended to accompanying parents or guardians of children who take part in such activities. In response to a rash of dangerous pitch invasions in the Premier League and lower leagues last season, England's top-flight clubs met in London on Wednesday in a bid to find a solution to the growing problem.

The policy comes into effect immediately, with the next round of Premier League matches slated for the weekend of October 1 and 2. "At a Premier League Shareholders' Meeting today, clubs unanimously agreed to introduce minimum-length bans for supporters who take part in anti-social and criminal behaviour at League stadiums," a Premier League statement said. "Fans caught carrying or activating pyrotechnics or smoke bombs, or entering the pitch without permission, will receive an automatic club ban with a minimum term of one year."

Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira lashed out at an Everton supporter after being goaded by fans who ran onto the pitch following their side's victory at Goodison Park last term. There were also ugly scenes when fans swarmed the pitch after Nottingham Forest's Championship play-off semi-final win against Sheffield United in May.

Blades striker Billy Sharp was butted by a Forest fan who was subsequently jailed for 24 weeks and given a 10-year football banning order. A Leicester fan ran onto the pitch and tried to punch Nottingham Forest players during an FA Cup tie in February.

Manchester United announced Thursday a net loss of £115.5 million ($130.4 million, 132.2 million euros) for the 2021/22 season even though revenues at the club rose by 18 percent to £583 million. Figures released incorporating the final quarter of the 20-time English champions' financial year, which ended in June, showed losses rose by £23m on the previous year.

The club's net debt also increased from £419.5 million in 2021 to £514.9 million this year, an increase of more than 22 percent. United attributed that rise mainly to unrealised foreign exchange losses on the retranslation of borrowings in US dollars. "Our financial results for fiscal 2022 reflect a recovery from the pandemic, a full return of fans and new commercial partnerships offset by increased investment in the playing squad," said chief financial officer Cliff Baty. "Our results have been adversely affected by the absence of a summer tour in July 2021, material exceptional and increased utility costs, and the impact of the weakening of sterling on our non-cash finance costs."

United finished the 2021/22 Premier League season in sixth place with their lowest points total since the Premier League replaced England's First Division in 1992. Failure to qualify for the Champions League will also hurt United's future finances. They are instead competing in the less lucrative Europa League during new manager Erik ten Hag's first season in charge. United finished 13 points adrift of fourth place and 35 behind Premier League champions Manchester City as their wait for a first major trophy since 2017 went on. They are currently fifth, six points behind early season leaders Arsenal but having played six games to the Gunners' seven.

Germany will be without captain Manuel Neuer and midfielder Leon Goretzka against Hungary and England due to positive coronavirus tests.
Both Bayern Munich players were isolated after the positive results and have since left the team hotel in Gravenbruch, near Frankfurt, the German soccer federation said on Wednesday.

They will miss the Nations League games against Hungary in Leipzig on Friday and England in London on Monday. The alarm bells are going off, national teammate Jonas Hofmann said. Players who had contact with Goretzka and Neuer were to be tested daily for COVID-19.

English Premier League club Chelsea sacked their commerical director Damian Willoughby less than a month after his appointment after a female football finance agent alleged he sent her "inappropriate messages" and sexually harassed her last year.

Willoughby, who had enjoyed stints at Manchester City and gaming company Electronic Arts, was appointed as Chelsea's commercial director earlier this month after Todd Boehly took over at Stamford Bridge. However, his contract was terminated immediately after an investigation was completed into the allegations against him.

As per The Telegraph, the female football agent launched a complaint against Willoughby to Chelsea's president of business Tom Glick, who had hired him as the commerical director of the club. In her complaint, the agent alleged she was sexually harassed and threatened over the phone by Willoughby before his appointment at Chelsea.

The female agent also submitted evidence in the form of messages sent to her by Willoughby. In one of the messages, Willoughby asked the agent to be naked and promised her he will arrange a meeting for her with Manchester City chief executive Ferran Soriano if she was willing to be 'naughty' for one night.

"When you come to London will you be naughty?" - Willoughby allegedly asked the agent in one of his messages while introducing City chief executive Soriano.

"No," the agent replied following which Willoughby said - "happy to connect you, if you promise to be naughty one night."

Chelsea released a statement to confirm Willoughby's sacking and said despite the fact that the messages have been sent prior to his arrival at the club, the commercial director's behaviour was in contrast to the kind of workplace environment and corporate culture the club are trying to build under the new ownership.

“Chelsea Football Club confirms that it has terminated Commercial Director Damian Willoughby’s employment with immediate effect. Evidence of inappropriate messages sent by Mr Willoughby, prior to his appointment at Chelsea FC earlier this month, has recently been provided to and investigated by the Club," read a statement from Chelsea.

“While they were sent prior to his employment at the Club, such behaviour runs absolutely counter to the workplace environment and corporate culture being established by the Club’s new ownership."
