Inter Milan bounced back after two consecutive losses in Serie A with a crucial Champions League 1-0 win against Barcelona on Tuesday thanks to a Hakan Calhanoglu goal.

The Turkish midfielder slotted home a clinical strike from just outside the area, with the ball going into the corner to the goalkeeper’s right in added time before the break.

The home win lifted Inter to second place in Group C on six points, three behind leaders Bayern Munich and three in front of Barcelona.

Inter and Barca will face each other again next week at the Camp Nou when a third loss in four games would leave Barca in danger of being knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage for the second consecutive season.

Inter came into the match having lost four of their previous six games in all competitions and are ninth in Serie A, four points from the European qualification spots and eight behind leaders Napoli and Atalanta.

Barcelona, by contrast, arrived as the new LaLiga leaders and with striker Robert Lewandowski on a roll, having scored in six consecutive LaLiga match weeks.

But the Polish star forward made no impression at the San Siro, ending with no shots on target, having been neutralized by Inter’s five-man defence.

In the 24th minute, Barcelona got a break when a potential penalty for a handball by Eric Garcia inside the box was ruled out by the VAR check which spotted a close offside in the build-up.

Inter Milan had a Joaquin Correa goal ruled out in the very next play for another offside.

However, they manage to break the deadlock at the end of the first half with Calhanoglu's precise, low shot.

Ousmane Dembele was the lone bright spot for Barcelona up front, creating the few opportunities that Barcelona had despite dominating the ball possession.

The French winger had two cross-shots that went just wide in the first half and thundered a close-range shot off the right post midway through the second half.

Dembele kept insisting until he placed a perfect cross in Pedri's path but Barca’s potential equaliser was ruled out after the VAR check spotted a handball by Ansu Fati right before Pedri’s strike.

Barca pressed with long balls and crosses in the final minutes. Their players clamoured for a penalty in added time, complaining about a possible handball inside the box by substitute Denzel Dumfries. But after a VAR check the referee ruled there had been no infringement by the Dutch defender.

"I'm really angry, I just can't understand how that is not a penalty; it's clear. It's an injustice," a frustrated Xavi Hernandez told Movistar Plus.

"That's why I said yesterday (at the news conference) that the referees should come out and explain their decisions, because we don't understand anything."

The FIFA World Cup is a keenly-awaited event, which will be held in the Middle East for the first time ever. Qatar is set to play host to the 32-nation showpiece event which will see some big stars rub shoulders with each other and, hence, the excitement is on another level for football fans across the globe.

In the run-up to Qatar 2022, quite a lot of preparations are being made. On Wednesday (October 5), it was announced that the number of government workers attending offices would be cut down whereas schooling hours are also set to be reduced to ease congestion before and during the World Cup.

With in excess of one million visitors expected to be in Qatar for the big-ticket event, from November 20 to December 18, the government is eager to minimise the traffic on the streets around the eight stadiums. In this context, the authorities are worried about the opening two weeks when the number of foreign fans following the participating nations will peak.

An official spokesperson recently claimed that only 20 per cent of government staff would be expected in offices starting November and till December 19. In addition, the staff would work four hours a day. Not only this, from November 1 to November 17, school hours will also be brought down; i.e. opening only from 7 am to midday. Students will be on holiday from November 18 until December 22.

The main Corniche highway along Doha's seafront will also be closed to all cars with the commencement of November.

Locked exit gates and the delay in opening them for panicked supporters contributed to the deadly stampede inside Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang, the Indonesian football association said on Monday. At least 131 people lost their lives while more than 300 supporters sustained injuries in one of the worst football tragedies of recent times.

Erwin Tobing, the chief of the Indonesian football association's discipline commission admitted all exit gates should have been open but some of them were closed. "The doors should have been open, but were closed," said Tobing.

The Kanjuruhan Stadium was packed with the supporters of Arema FC for their game against bitter rivals Persebaya Surabaya. Surabaya fans had already been banned from attending the game owing to the possibility of violence. However, the game took a deadly turn after the full-time whistle as hundreds of angry Arema supporters stormed onto the pitch.

It resulted in chaos as some fans reportedly also clashed with the police officers present inside the stadium. The police fired tear gas shots to control the crowd, triggering a massive stampede as fans tried to flee the stadiums through narrow exit gates, some of which had still not been opened.

The Indonesian football association said all exit gates at the stadium should have been opened at least ten minutes before the end of the match, however, due to the lack of workers, only a few people were employed to open the gates and some had not even reached the doors at the time the stampede took place.

"Because of a lack of workers, only a few people were ordered to open the gates, and they had not yet reached some doors when spectators began rushing to escape tear gas fired by police in an attempt to control fans who had entered the field," Ahmad Riyadh, the spokesperson of Indonesian football association said.

Liverpool eased to a comfortable 2-0 win in the 'Battle of Britain' against Rangers in the Champions League group games on Tuesday while Napoli underlined their credentials with an impressive 6-1 thrashing of Ajax in Amsterdam.

On a night when a minute's silence was held before every match in tribute to the 131 victims of the Indonesia stadium tragedy, Bayern Munich and Club Brugge also made it three wins from three while Inter edged Barcelona in a tight contest in Milan.

Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool went into their Group A game against the Scottish champions on the back of just three wins in their first nine Premier League and Champions League games of the season.

But they settled quickly when Trent Alexander-Arnold produced a sublime free-kick to put the home side ahead after just seven minutes. Rangers' 40-year-old goalkeeper Allan McGregor produced some fine saves, including four to deny Darwin Nunez his first goal for Liverpool, to keep his side in the hunt at half-time.

Seven minutes into the second half, however, Leon King's challenge caught the legs of Luis Díaz to give away a penalty. Mohamed Salah stepped up and struck the ball down the middle as McGregor was unable to repeat the penalty-saving heroics he produced against Napoli.

"It was exactly what we needed. It was a super, solid performance," said Klopp, who switched from his usual 4-3-3 formation to a 4-2-3-1.

"Sometimes you have to change things."

Napoli stay top of Group A after another impressive victory, coming from behind to hammer Ajax 6-1 to take their tally of goals to 13 from three matches.

Mohammed Kudus put the home side ahead in the ninth minute but Luciano Spalletti's side bounced back with first-half goals from Giacomo Raspadori, Giovanni Di Lorenzo and Piotr Zielinski.

Raspadori added his second two minutes after the restart and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia added the fifth just after the hour. Ajax's night was made worse when captain Dusan Tadic was sent off after collecting a second yellow card and Giovanni Simeone closed out the win.

Bayern moved to the edge of qualification with a third successive win, thrashing Viktoria Plzen 5-0 in Group C.

"We were calm, we dominated and we were in total control," said Bayern captain and Manuel Neuer.

"When everything is going well, we're almost unstoppable."

German international Leroy Sane struck twice, opening the scoring from distance after seven minutes and adding a second five minutes after the break. Between Sane's two goals, Serge Gnabry added a second on 13 minutes before Sadio Mane posted his first Champions League goal for Bayern with number three after 21 minutes.

Substitute Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting came off the bench at half time and added the fifth just before the hour mark.

Hakan Calhanoglu fired Inter Milan to a 1-0 win over Barcelona at the San Siro which took the Italians into second spot in Group C, three points behind Bayern. Inter had lost five of the previous 10 matches in all competitions but Turkey midfielder Calhanoglu ended the crisis talk when he lashed in the only goal of the game on the stroke of half-time.

"It was very important today for us, to show something to our fans who are always with us. We showed that we deserved it," said Calhanoglu.

Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez, however, was left fuming after two key handball decisions went against his team. The first saw an equaliser ruled out following a pitch review by referee Slavko Vincic for Ansu Fati's handball just before the ball dropped to Pedri to tuck home.

Barca were then denied a stoppage-time penalty after VAR officials ruled that Denzel Dumfries did not commit a handball offence despite touching the ball in a very similar way to Fati.

"If you ask me I’m outraged... the word is outrage because it makes no sense, it's an injustice," Xavi told reporters.

"I think it's an injustice, I just can't hide it."

Club Brugge also claimed a third successive win to continue their surprise charge towards the next round.

Kamal Sowah and Ferran Jutgla were on target as the Belgian side made short work of Atletico Madrid in Group B. Atletico had their chances with Antoine Griezmann crashing a penalty off the crossbar. They also had a goal ruled out for offside which added to their frustration.

"It's a very tight group and we will have to fight because we won't get anything for free," said Atletico captain Koke.

Club Brugge top Group B, three points ahead of the other three teams after Porto beat Bayern Leverkusen 2-0 with second-half goals from Zaidu and Galeno.

Sporting Lisbon's march in Group D came to a shuddering halt in Marseille where the home side came from a goal down to win 4-1 and get their first win under their belt. Lisbon still top the group with six points, two ahead of Eintracht Frankfurt and Tottenham Hotspur who played out a goalless draw in Germany.

War-torn Ukraine will join Spain and Portugal in a bid to host the 2030 World Cup, presidents from the three countries' football associations announced on Wednesday. The original proposal was made public two years ago and the Spanish football association (RFEF) said in a statement the idea was backed by UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin.

"The Royal Spanish Football Federation and the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) have incorporated the Ukrainian Football Association (UAF) into the Iberian Bid to organise the 2030 World Cup," RFEF said in a statement. "With the full support of Aleksander Ceferin, the Iberian bid incorporates the federation chaired by Andriy Pavelko in order to build bridges and project a message of unity, solidarity and generosity from all of European football," it added.

Portugal hosted the 2004 European Championship while Ukraine was a joint host with Poland of Euro 2012. "The example of tenacity and resilience set by the Ukrainian people is inspiring," the FPF said. The FPF added that the joint bid "aims to contribute through the power of football to the recovery of a country undergoing reconstruction". It added that the terms of Ukraine's role in the bid "will be discussed and defined in due course".

It follows the announcement last month from an Egyptian official that Egypt, Greece and Saudi Arabia are in talks to jointly host the 2030 World Cup. In August, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Paraguay launched their bid to host the event -- which is the centenary of the first World Cup, held in Uruguay -- with the hope of bringing the global showpiece back to its first home.

The 2026 edition has already been awarded to three countries -- Canada, Mexico and the United States. More than half of the 21 World Cup finals already staged have been in Europe but later this year Qatar will host the finals, the first time they have been played in the Middle East.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo said Wednesday that he would order an audit of all the football stadiums in the country, vowing to find the "root" cause of one of the deadliest disasters in the sport's history.

Widodo was in the city of Malang to visit relatives of the victims and talk to the wounded at a hospital, and to see the stadium where the stampede killed at least 131 people on Saturday.

"I want to know the root of the problem that caused this tragedy so that we can get the best solution," he said.

"I will order the public works minister to audit all stadiums used for the (football) league," he said outside the Saiful Anwar hospital in Malang, adding he had spoken to FIFA's president the night before about improving Indonesia's "football management".

He entered the hospital to speak with several wounded patients and urged them to "stay spirited". He will travel to the Kanjuruhan stadium, the scene of the disaster on Saturday evening, according to an official from the presidential office.

The Indonesian leader's visit came as anger grew over police officers' response to a pitch invasion after fans of Arema FC tried to approach players following their defeat to fierce rivals Persebaya Surabaya.

Police described the incident as a riot and said two officers were killed, but the survivors accused them of overreacting. Officers responded to the pitch invasion with force, kicking and hitting fans with batons, and firing tear gas shells, according to witnesses and video footage, pushing fans back into the stands where many were trampled or suffocated to death.

In response to the tragedy, Widodo ordered all matches suspended, an investigation into what happened, and compensation for victims. Indonesia's chief security minister said a task force had been created and that the probe would take two to three weeks.

Police said the investigation was focusing on six gates at the stadium using CCTV footage from cameras placed outside them. It said the exits were open but too small for the crowds attempting to pass through them.

But Indonesia's football association spokesperson said Tuesday some gates that should have been opened 10 minutes before the final whistle remained closed. They stayed shut "because of late commands" and officers "had not arrived", he told a press conference.

The Malang police chief was replaced Monday, nine officers were suspended and 19 others were put under investigation over the disaster in the stadium, according to police.

Witnesses described being shrouded in smoke, their eyes stinging as they rushed for small exit doors. Several present said the police stood by and refused to help victims.

"The place looked like a mass cemetery. Women and children were piling on top of one another," Eko Prianto, 39, told AFP.

Indonesia's football association also moved Tuesday to sanction Arema FC, banning its organising committee chairman and a security officer from football for life and fining the club 250 million rupiah ($16,500).

Maike Ira Puspita, the association's deputy secretary-general, told AFP the away fans were banned due to fears of fan violence and said the match passed without incident until fans entered the pitch after the final whistle.

She said the association sanctioned the club and its officials "due to the... negligence of the whole situation". The actions of the police were outside of the association's scope, she said. I want to know the root cause for deadly stampede: Indonesian President to order stadiums' audit

Barcelona head coach Xavi Hernandez was left fuming after controversial refereeing decisions in his side's 1-0 loss against Inter Milan in the Champions League on Wednesday. Barcelona were denied a late penalty in the game after Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries appeared to have handled the ball when Barcelona forward Ansu Fati looked set to head in a shot towards goal.

Barcelona were trailing 1-0 and hoped for a final shot at drawing the game after Dumfries' foul. There was a long check as the VAR analysed the incident but Xavi's men were not awarded a penalty as Inter eventually secured a hard-fought win.

The last-minute handball call was not the only controversial referee decision during the game as Inter too were denied a penalty in the first half after a handball from Barcelona defender Eric Garcia. The replays showed Inter's Lautaro Martinez was marginally offside seconds before the incident, which led to Inter losing the penalty.

Inter Milan then took the lead at the stroke of halftime as midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu scored the decisive goal to put his side ahead in the crucial clash. Barcelona came close to scoring the equaliser in the second half when Pedri scored in the 66th minute. However, the goal was ruled out as replays showed Fati had handled the ball in the build-up.

It was the handball call in the dying minutes of the game which didn't go in Barcelona's favour that infuriated Xavi. The Barcelona head coach said it was clear injustice and that the referee should have been asked to explain the decision why he didn't award a penalty to Barcelona.

"I'm p***** off because it's an injustice that we've had to experience. We've suffered a very important defeat. We have three finals left in a very uncomfortable situation," Xavi said after the game.

"The referee should speak. For me, it's a very clear handball. The referee is very important in this sport, and he should go out and give explanations. He didn't want to give them to me. He gave me explanations of the plays he had cancelled, but I asked him about the last one," he added.

'It's an injustice': Xavi furious at referee after Barcelona's Champions League defeat against Inter Milan

A year-long independent investigation released on Monday said that sexual misconduct and abuse has become “systemic” in top-flight National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) in the United States.

“Our investigation has revealed a league in which abuse and misconduct-verbal and emotional abuse and sexual misconduct-had become systemic, spanning multiple teams, coaches, and victims.”

“Abuse in the NWSL is rooted in a deeper culture in women’s soccer, beginning in youth leagues, that normalizes verbally abusive coaching and blurs boundaries between coaches and players.”

The controversy started in 2021 when former North Carolina Courage head coach Paul Riley faced allegations of sexual abuse after a report by The Athletic. The report carried first-hand accounts from a number of players who played under him since 2010. In the aftermath of the controversy, former Commissioner Lisa Baird lost her job and Sally Q. Yates launched this investigation.

According to the report, there were multiple instances of sexual abuse in the league and Yates warned the US Football authorities that a number of cases are still unreported.

“This investigation’s findings are heart-breaking and deeply troubling,” said Cindy Parlow, US Soccer’s president and a former player on the US women’s national team told Reuters. “The abuse described is inexcusable and has no place on any playing field, in any training facility or workplace.

“As the national governing body for our sport, US Soccer is fully committed to doing everything in its power to ensure that all players – at all levels – have a safe and respectful place to learn, grow and compete. We are taking the immediate action that we can today and will convene leaders in soccer at all levels across the country to collaborate on the recommendations so we can create meaningful, long-lasting change throughout the soccer ecosystem,” she added.

While most clubs were quite supportive, the report said that three teams – the Portland Thorns, Racing Louisville FC and the Chicago Stars – did not cooperate with their investigators.

“The Portland Thorns interfered with our access to relevant witnesses and raised specious legal arguments in an attempt to impede our use of relevant documents,” the report read. “Racing Louisville FC refused to produce documents concerning [former coach] Christy Holly and would not permit witnesses (even former employees) to answer relevant questions regarding Holly’s tenure, citing non-disclosure and non-disparagement agreements it signed with Holly. The Chicago Red Stars unnecessarily delayed the production of relevant documents over the course of nearly nine months.”

A minute's silence will be held at this week's Champions League, Europa League and Conference League matches in tribute to the 131 victims of the Indonesia stadium tragedy, UEFA said Tuesday. "UEFA has today announced that a moment of silence will be held prior to kick-off in memory of the victims of the tragic events at Kanjuruhan Stadium in Indonesia," read its statement. "This moment of silence will take place at all UEFA matches this week (Champions League, Europa League, Europa Conference League and Women's World Cup play-offs)."

The terraces of the Kanjuruhan stadium were packed Saturday evening with 42,000 "Aremania", or Arema FC fans, for a match against fierce rivals Persebaya Surabaya. But after a 3-2 defeat, the first home loss for more than two decades to their adversaries, fans streamed down to the pitch to confront players and management.

Police described the incident as a riot and said two officers were killed, but survivors accused them of overreacting. Officers responded to the pitch invasion with force, kicking and hitting fans with batons, according to witnesses and video footage, prompting more fans to enter the pitch. The death toll jumped again on Tuesday with local health official Wiyanto Wijoyo telling AFP six more victims had succumbed to their injuries. Indonesian officials said 4,000 more tickets had been allocated for the match than should have been, while some of the stadium's doors appeared to have been shut, according to witnesses.

That left physically stronger supporters to scale large fences to escape the mayhem, while the most vulnerable were at the mercy of the crush as tear gas rained down. FIFA president Gianni Infantino had termed it on Sunday "a dark day for all involved in football and a tragedy beyond comprehension".

Cristiano Ronaldo has had a disastrous start to the ongoing season with Manchester United. The Portuguese forward has started only one Premier League game for the club and has so far managed only one goal across all competitions this season. He was cut a frustrated figure on the bench as United were handed a 6-3 thrashing at the hands of arch-rivals Manchester City on Sunday.

Ronaldo had made his intentions clear about wanting to leave United earlier this summer as he wanted to move to a club competing in the Champions League. However, no top club showed any concrete interest in acquiring the 37-year-old, who is no more the first-choice striker for United.

Ronaldo was on the bench against Manchester City but remained an unused substitute as manager Erik Ten Hag later admitted he didn't want to subject the Portuguese to the humiliating defeat considering his 'big career'. Cristiano Ronaldo can leave Manchester United in January after woeful start to the season - Report

The Indonesian football association has banned two Arema Football Club officials for life following a deadly stampede at its stadium last week. At least 131 people lost their lives after the match between Arema FC and their bitter rivals Persebaya Surabaya turned deadly at the Kanjuruhan stadium.

The stadium was packed with Arema fans as they locked horns with Surabaya on Saturday. The rival fans had been banned from the game considering owing to the possibility of violence inside the stadium. However, following their team's 3-2 defeat, hundreds of Arema supporters stormed onto the pitch to express their anger.

Some reportedly clashed with the police officers present inside the stadium before tear gas was used to control the crowd. The use of tear gas shots triggered a massive stampede on the exit gates as fans tried to rush outside the stadium in panic. Many got trampled to death while others suffocated due to lack of oxygen.

Springing into action, the Indonesia football association on Tuesday announced the chairman of Arema FC's organising committee Abdul Haris, and a security officer have been banned for life. Erwin Tobing, chairman of the Indonesian FA's disciplinary committee said that the duo "must not carry out any activities in the football environment for life.'

Inter Milan must be prepared to suffer against Barcelona in Tuesday's Champions League group game, manager Simone Inzaghi said on the eve of the match as the Italian side look to end a run of poor results without several injured players.

Inter have lost four of their last six games in all competitions, sitting ninth in Serie A and third in Champions League Group C three points behind leaders Bayern Munich and level on points with Barca, who visit San Siro on Tuesday.

"We know that tomorrow will be a match of suffering... Barcelona are a very strong and complete team in all departments. Together with Bayern and (Manchester) City they offer the best in European football," Inzaghi told reporters.

"For us it must be an opportunity, we know the importance of the match. The group standings are open ... we are Inter and we will play it with all our strength. We know the difficulty of the match.

"Against Bayern, despite a good game, we lost (2-0), we weren't in the game at key moments and we had to defend better and make better use of the opportunities. We'll have to be good at limiting them and then hitting them at the right time."

Inter have several players ruled out or doubtful.

Lautaro Martinez will not have a full training session due to fatigue while strike partner Romelu Lukaku and central midfielder Marcelo Brozovic are sidelined.

Several videos have surfaced on social media where fans can be seen invading the pitch after the game and clashing with the police. Other videos showing fans trying to escort the injured ones out have also gone viral on social media.

In shocking footage that has surfaced on social media, the lifeless bodies of football fans can be seen lying on the ground in the aftermath of the deadly stampede. While some people can be seen attending to the injured, the lifeless bodies of others lie unattended.

Seventeen children were among at least 125 people killed in a soccer stampede in Indonesia at the weekend, officials said, as pressure builds on the Southeast Asian nation to explain how one of the world's worst stadium disasters unfolded.

Violence and hooliganism have long been features of Indonesian football, especially in places such as Jakarta, the capital, but Saturday's disaster in a small town in Java has thrown a spotlight on the problem. "My family and I didn't think it would turn out like this," said Endah Wahyuni, the elder sister of two boys, Ahmad Cahyo, 15, and Muhammad Farel, 14, who died after being caught in the melee. "They loved soccer, but never watched Arema live at Kanjuruhan stadium, this was their first time," she added at her brothers' funeral on Sunday, referring to the home side they backed.

Indonesia's chief security minister Mahfud MD said on Monday the government would form an independent fact-finding team which would include academics and soccer experts as well as government officials to probe what happened. The team will investigate for the next few weeks with the aim of finding who was responsible for the tragedy, he said. Indonesian daily Koran Tempo ran a black front page on Monday, centred on the words "Our Football Tragedy", printed in red along with a list of the dead.

Seventeen children were among the dead, with seven others being treated in hospital said Nahar, an official at the women's empowerment ministry. Saturday's deadly crush came as panicking spectators tried to escape the overpacked stadium after police fired tear gas to disperse fans from the losing home side who ran onto the pitch at the end of the match.

Home side Arema FC had lost the match 3-2 to Persebaya Surabaya, though authorities had said tickets were not issued to Persebaya fans over security concerns. Mahfud said on Sunday the stadium had been filled beyond its capacity. Some 42,000 tickets had been issued for a stadium designed to hold 38,000 people, he said. The incident was a "dark day for all involved", said FIFA, the governing body for world soccer, which has asked Indonesian football authorities for a report on the incident.

Its safety regulations say firearms or "crowd control gas" should not be used at matches. A tearful Arema FC president Gilang Widya Pramana apologised on Monday to the victims of the stampede and said he took full responsibility for the disaster.

"Lives are more precious than soccer," he told a news conference. In an address on Sunday, Pope Francis said he had prayed for those who have lost their lives and for the injured from the disaster. Police and sport officials have been sent to Malang to investigate an incident that ranks among the world's deadliest stadium disasters. "All those responsible should be held accountable for this disaster, regardless of their status or position," Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director of New York-based Human Rights Watch said on Monday.

Indonesian soccer stampede: 17 children among the dead in shocking incident

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola recently outlined the key difference between the legendary Lionel Messi and goal-scoring machine Erling Haaland. The Norwegian striker has been running riot across all competitions ever since his arrival at Manchester City earlier this summer.

Haaland has been unstoppable and has been scoring goals for fun for the reigning English Premier League champions while smashing records one after another. The young striker bagged yet another hat-trick for City against arch-rivals Manchester United on Sunday to help them secure a comprehensive 6-3 victory.

Following his heroics against United, Guardiola was asked what separates Haaland from Messi, who was also a wizard at the start of his career and went on to become one of the greatest of all time. The Spanish manager, who played an instrumental role in Messi's growth at his former club Barcelona, said the Argentinian had the ability to do it all himself while Haaland needs his teammates.

"The difference is that Erling needs maybe all his mates, you know, to do it. Unbelievable. Messi had the ability for himself to do it," said Guardiola.

Haaland has so far scored a staggering 17 goals across competitions for Manchester City this season, including an impressive 14 in the Premier League. If he can continue his red-hot form, Haaland might break the all-time record for most goals in a single season in the Premier League.

Praising Haaland for his sharp instincts, Guardiola said he has had no role to play in the star striker's exploits. The Spaniard said Haaland was born with incredible instincts which helps him finish well and score goals easily.

"I have said it many times and I will say it again - what Erling (Haaland) is doing he did in Norway, Austria and Germany. The quality we have alongside him helps him score, but what he is doing I didn't teach him. He has incredible instincts. It comes from his mum and dad. He was born with that," said Guardiola.

A stampede at a stadium in East Java province of Indonesia after a football match killed 125 people and left many injured besides loss of property. Indonesian president called for an investigation and put further matches on halt.

Indonesia Football Tragedy: 125 killed in stampede at Indonesia football match

At least 32 children died in Indonesia's stadium crush, an official said Monday as police moved to punish those responsible for one of the deadliest disasters in football history.

The tragedy on Saturday night in the city of Malang saw a total of 125 people killed and 323 others injured after officers fired tear gas in a packed stadium to quell a pitch invasion, triggering a stampede.

Dozens of children caught in the chaos lost their lives, an official at the women's empowerment and child protection ministry told AFP.

"From the latest data we received, out of 125 people who died in the accident, 32 of them were children, with the youngest being a toddler age three or four," said Nahar, who like many Indonesians goes by only one name.

As anger mounted against police, Indonesia's chief security minister Mahfud MD announced a task force had been formed to investigate and called for those responsible to be punished.

"We asked (police) to unveil who has perpetrated the crimes and take action against them and we also hope the national police will evaluate their security procedures," he said in a broadcast statement.

The police force sacked its local chief in Malang within hours of the minister's speech.

"Tonight the national police chief has made a decision to relieve Malang police chief Ferli Hidayat from his duty and replace him," national police spokesman Dedi Prasetyo told a press conference.

East Java police also suspended nine officers on the instruction of the national police force, he said, without providing details about their role in the tragedy.

Saturday's incident unfolded when fans of home team Arema FC stormed the pitch at the Kanjuruhan stadium after their loss 3-2 to bitter rivals Persebaya Surabaya.

Police responded by launching tear gas into packed terraces, prompting spectators to rush en masse to small gates where many were trampled or suffocated, according to witnesses.

"It felt like people were packed into a small tube with a tiny hole, and then they were smoked," said 29-year-old spectator Ahmad Rizal Habibi, who escaped before the crush.

Police described the incident as a riot and said two officers were killed, but survivors accuse them of overreacting and causing the deaths of scores of spectators.

"One of our messages is for the authorities to investigate this thoroughly. And we want accountability. Who is to blame?" said 25-year-old Malang resident Andika, who declined to give his last name.

"We want justice for our fallen supporters."

One witness outside the stadium said police refused to help when the crush happened.

"The place looked like a mass cemetery. Women and children were piling on top of one another," Eko Prianto, 39, told AFP.

"I ran to the police or soldier to help. There were no medics in sight. The police did not help and the soldier threatened to beat me."

In a tearful live address, Arema FC president Gilang Widya Pramana apologised for the tragedy.

"I, as the president of Arema FC, will take full responsibility for the incident that occurred," he said.

The Arema squad visited the site of the crush on Monday wearing black shirts to pay their respects and lay flowers before gathering on the pitch to pray for victims

Newspaper Kompas published a black front page with the word "tragedy" and a stadium bearing the names of victims. Graffiti daubed on the walls of the venue revealed bubbling anger towards authorities.

"My siblings were killed. Investigate thoroughly," read one message scrawled on the stadium's shutters, accompanied by a black ribbon and the date of the disaster.

"ACAB", an acronym for "all cops are bastards", was sprayed on another wall.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo ordered compensation for families of the victims to the tune of 50 million rupiah ($3,200) each, a minister said on Monday. He has also suspended football matches until security improves and announced a probe.

Rights groups said officers should be held accountable for using tear gas in a confined area. Mahfud said the task force for the investigation would consist of government and football officials, academics and members of the media.

He said the probe would be "concluded in the next two or three weeks". But Human Rights Watch said the police and Indonesia's football association "may be tempted to downplay or undermine full accountability for officials".

Football fan violence is an enduring problem in Indonesia.

Witnesses say supporters of the home team invaded the pitch after their loss to Persebaya Surabaya. Persebaya Surabaya fans were barred from the game, due to the fear of violence.

Mahfud said 42,000 tickets had been allocated for 38,000 seats. After the stampede, Arema fans threw rocks at officers and torched vehicles including a police truck on the streets of Malang, according to police.

FIFA's president Gianni Infantino called the tragedy a "dark day" for football. The world governing body's safety guidelines prohibit the use of crowd control gas by police or stewards at pitchside.

As anger mounted against police, Indonesia's chief security minister Mahfud MD announced a task force had been formed to investigate and called for those responsible to be punished. Also Read: Indonesia appoints independent commission to investigate deaths in football stampede "We asked (police) to unveil who has perpetrated the crimes and take action against them and we also hope the national police will evaluate their security procedures," he said in a broadcast statement. Who is to blame?" said 25-year-old Malang resident Andika, who declined to give his last name. "We want justice for our fallen supporters." One witness outside the stadium said police refused to help when the crush happened. "The place looked like a mass cemetery. Women and children were piling on top of one another," Eko Prianto, 39, told AFP. "I ran to the police or soldier to help. There were no medics in sight. The police did not help and the soldier threatened to beat me." In a tearful live address, Arema FC president Gilang Widya Pramana apologised for the tragedy. "I, as the president of Arema FC, will take full responsibility for the incident that occurred," he said. The Arema squad visited the site of the crush on Monday wearing black shirts to pay their respects and lay flowers before gathering on the pitch to pray for victims Newspaper Kompas published a black front page with the word "tragedy" and a stadium bearing the names of victims. Also Read: Indonesia stadium stampede: What do FIFA rules state about use of tear gas to control crowds?

32 children among 125 dead, nine police officers suspended after Indonesia stadium disaster

Indonesia witnessed one of the worst football disasters in recent times as a stampede at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in East Java left 125 people dead and hundreds injured. A tragedy unfolded at the stadium after the Indonesian police decided to use tear gas to bring the crowd in control following fans' invasion of the pitch.

Persebaya Surabaya defeated bitter rivals Arema FC 3-2 in a high-voltage derby on Saturday before hundreds of Arema fans stormed onto the pitch resulting in chaos. The angry fans reportedly clashed with the police officers on the ground, prompting the security officials to fire tear gas shots at the crowd on the ground and in the stands.

The usage of tear gas triggered a massive stampede in the stadium as fans panicked and tried to escape through the exit gates. There was a huge accumulation of fans at the exit gates as many got trampled to death while others succumbed due to suffocation.

Several videos surfaced on social media showing fans panicking in the stadium and trying to get out. In shocking footage in the aftermath of the deadly stampede, the bodies of scores of fans were seen lying on the ground while some injured were seen getting escorted out.

What do FIFA rules state about the use of tear gas to control crowds at stadiums?

FIFA clearly mentions in its security guidelines that the stewards or police officers deployed at the stadium to ensure public order are not allowed to use firearms or 'crowd control gas'.

While the use of tear gas was a clear violation of FIFA guidelines and resulted in deadly consequences in Indonesia on Saturday, there was another rule violation during the stampede at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in Malang.

As per FIFA guidelines, the stewards and security officers present inside the stadium need to always ensure that the exit gates, emergency exits and other routes remain unobstructed at all times. However, that was not the case during the stampede at the Kanjuruhan Stadium.

Manchester United suffered a humiliating 6-3 defeat at the hands of arch-rivals Manchester City in the first Manchester Derby in the Premier League on Sunday. United were completely demolished by Pep Guardiola's side as Erling Haaland and Phil Foden bagged a hat-trick apiece to extend their unbeaten streak in the Premier League this season.

It was a nightmarish start for United as Foden opened the scoring for City in the 8th minute before Haaland scored twice inside four minutes to make it 3-0. Foden piled more misery on their city rivals with another goal in the 44th minute to ensure the reigning Premier League champions had the game in their bag by halftime.

In the second half, Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag went on to make a number of chances as the likes of Fred, Casemiro, Anthony Martial, Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw all came on from the bench. However, Cristiano Ronaldo remained an unused substitute on the bench for United despite them going 4-0 down at the end of the first half.

When asked about his decision to not bring Ronaldo as a substitute in the second half, Ten Hag said it was 'out of respect' for the Portuguese forward's big career. Ten Hag admitted he didn't want Ronaldo to be subjected to humiliation at the hands of City.

"I wouldn't bring him in out of respect for Cristiano, for his big career," Ten Hag said after the game.

"The other thing was the advantage that I could bring on Anthony Martial. He needs the minutes, but I don't want to point it out like that," he added.

Ronaldo, who wanted to leave Manchester United in the summer transfer window earlier this year, had to remain at the club as no top team came in for him. He has had a sluggish start to the season and has managed only one start for United in the Premier League so far this season.

United did manage to score three goals in the second half but it wasn't enough as City scored two more to make 6-3. Ten Hag said his side lacked belief in the game and the performance was unacceptable. The Man Utd manager insisted he couldn't think of any positives to take from the game.

"It's quite simple, it's a lack of belief. When you don't believe on the pitch, then you can't win games; that is unacceptable. We get undisciplined at following rules and you get hammered, that's happened today," said Ten Hag.

"All the credit to City, but it's nothing to do with City, our performance was not good. It had to do with the belief as individuals and as a team.

"From the first minute I felt it, and at half-time, we changed things and we changed attitude. In this moment I can't think about positives. We let our fans down, we let ourselves down and we're hugely disappointed," he added.

'Out of respect': Erik Ten Hag's shocking admission on why he didn't play Cristiano Ronaldo against Man City

Karim Benzema missed a penalty for Real Madrid as they finally blinked in the La Liga title race, dropping their first points of the season in a 1-1 draw with Osasuna on Sunday.

Elsewhere Real Sociedad won 5-3 at Girona and high-flying Real Betis fell to a 1-0 defeat at Celta Vigo. After Barcelona beat Real Mallorca on Saturday, Madrid knew they had to win to stay top but were frustrated by Jagoba Arrasate's well-organised side at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Benzema, on his return to the side after injury, won a spot-kick but then fired it against the crossbar, and also had a goal disallowed for offside as Madrid tried to force a way through.

Vinicius Junior broke the deadlock just before half-time with a cross that snuck all the way into the far corner, but Kike Garcia's well-taken header early in the second period earned Osasuna a point.

"What we were missing was scoring that penalty, normally Karim scores them," Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti told DAZN.

"He had no problem playing the 90 minutes. It's been a month since he's played, he has to get his best form back. He did his part, he had the chance from the penalty. It's an accident, sometimes it happens."

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez told the club's fans at an assembly on Sunday morning that a European Super League project was essential, but Osasuna showed domestic football can still offer a significant challenge. Benzema made his first appearance since September 6, while Andriy Lunin and Dani Ceballos started in place of injured duo Thibaut Courtois and Luka Modric.

Madrid probed promisingly down the flanks, while at the other end Abde Ezzalzouli, on loan at Osasuna from Barcelona, crashed a shot into the side netting on a bright display. Madrid opened the scoring in fortuitous fashion, with Vinicius whipping in a low cross which caught out goalkeeper Sergio Herrera and crept in at the far post.

Osasuna complained that Benzema and Antonio Rudiger were offside and interfering with play, but their protests were dismissed. The visitors were level five minutes into the second half, when Kike Garcia brilliantly looped a backwards header over Lunin. The goal meant Madrid have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of the first seven league games.

"We were quite solid at the back," insisted Ancelotti. "We conceded a goal from a deep cross, it was quite strange. The team was balanced, the objective is always to be strong to avoid conceding."

Turning up the heat, Benzema drew a stunning save from Herrera, although he was offside, then neatly slipped through Rodrygo Goes, who fired over. The French striker won a penalty when he was shoved over by David Garcia, who was sent off, but hit the crossbar with his effort. Moments later Benzema had the ball in the net, but it was disallowed for offside.

The draw means Barcelona lead Madrid on goal difference after seven games, with both teams on 19 points and unbeaten. It is the first time the Catalans lead the league at the end of a fixture round since June 2020.

"We have to celebrate, they had won all their games and we came back from a goal down, the team did great work and played a great game," said Arrasate.

"If Madrid's players weren't offside then the goalkeeper's position would have been different (for the opening goal)."

Earlier Real Sociedad, seventh, came out on top after an eight-goal thriller at Montilivi.

Norwegian striker Alexander Sorloth hit a first-half brace for the visitors either side of goals for Girona's Rodrigo Riquelme and Arnau Martinez. Valentin Castellanos put Girona ahead but Brais Mendez and Martin Zubimendi struck in the space of six minutes to restore the Basque side's lead.

Takefusa Kubo made the game safe for La Real late on. Real Betis fell to a narrow defeat at Celta Vigo, playing most of the game with 10 men after Luiz Felipe's 20th-minute red card.

Gabriel Veiga slammed home in the opening stages from distance for the hosts at Balaidos and they moved 10th while Betis remained fourth. Espanyol and Valencia shared a thrilling 2-2 draw which saw both sides reduced to 10 men after red cards for Martin Braithwaite and Marcos Andre respectively.

Indonesia appoints independent commission to investigate deaths in football stampede

FIFA, the international governing body of football, has called the deadly stampede at the Kanjuruhan Stadium in Indonesia a 'tragedy beyond comprehension'. At least 125 people died and around 180 were left injured in a stampede at the stadium after local club Arema FC lost the match to bitter rival Persebaya Surabaya.

The stampede took place after the Indonesian police used tear gas on the Arema FC supporters, who had invaded the pitch following their team's 2-3 loss against their arch-rivals. As per reports, a group of supporters also attacked police officers present in the stadium which prompted the officials to use tear gas to bring the situation under control.

The use of tear gas triggered a stampede inside the stadium as fans tried to flee through two narrow exit gates. There were thousands of fans inside the stadium for the game and they were seen trying to exit in panic, resulting in a deadly stampede and suffocation.

Rights group Open Stadiums have called on FIFA to throw Iran out of the World Cup in Qatar in November because of the country's treatment of women. In a letter sent to FIFA President Gianni Infantino on Thursday (September 29), the organisation said Iranian authorities continued to refuse to allow female fans access to games inside the country despite pressure from the game's governing body.

"The Iranian FA is not only an accomplice of the crimes of the regime, it is a direct threat to the security of female fans in Iran and wherever our national team plays in the world. Football should be a safe space for us all," the letter said. "That is why, as Iranian football fans, it is with an extremely heavy heart that we have to raise our deepest concern about Iran's participation in the upcoming FIFA World Cup."

"Why would FIFA give the Iranian state and its representatives a global stage, while it not only refuses to respect basic human rights and dignities, but is currently torturing and killing its own people? "Where are the principles of FIFA's statues in this regard? "Therefore, we ask FIFA, based on Articles 3 and 4 of its statutes, to immediately expel Iran from the World Cup 2022 in Qatar."

The articles cited cover the issues of human rights and non-discrimination based on gender, race, religion and other matters, with breaches punishable by suspension or expulsion from the global body. Neither FIFA nor Iran's FA immediately responded to a Reuters request for comment. The call comes as protests continued in several cities across Iran on Thursday against the death of young woman in police custody, state and social media reported, as a human rights group said at least 83 people had been killed in nearly two weeks of demonstrations.

Iranian authorities on Friday arrested a former football player over his support for protests over the custodial death of young Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini, state media reported. A wave of unrest has rocked Iran since the 22-year-old died on September 16 after her arrest by the morality police in Tehran for allegedly failing to observe the Islamic republic's strict dress code for women.

The street violence has led to the deaths of dozens of people -- mostly protesters but also some members of the security forces -- and hundreds of arrests. "Former Persepolis FC player Hossein Maahini was arrested by the order of the judicial authorities for supporting and encouraging riots on his social media pages," state news agency IRNA said.

On Thursday, Tehran provincial governor Mohsen Mansouri warned celebrities against coming out in support of the protests. "We will take action against the celebrities who have fanned the flames of the riots," ISNA news agency quoted him as saying. On Wednesday, Iran's Mehr news agency said former state television host Mahmoud Shahriari had been arrested for allegedly "encouraging riots and solidarity with the enemy".

A number of Iranian sportsmen, actors and filmmakers have supported the movement, asking authorities to listen to the people's demands. Iran's two-time Oscar-winning director Asghar Farhadi on Sunday urged people around the world to "stand in solidarity" with the protesters.
