Erling Haaland's arrival at Manchester City earlier this summer was always expected to spice up the ongoing Premier League season as the Norweigan striker came with a great reputation and huge expectations. Not many believed he would be able to replicate his Bundesliga heroics in his debut season in one of the world's most difficult leagues.

However, the Norweigan striker has managed to live up to the expectations and has been exceptional so far this season. He has been in red-hot form and has been scoring goals for fun across competitions. Haaland has already bagged 22 goals in 15 games across all competitions, including a stunning 17 goals in 11 games in the Premier League.

Haaland was on target once again as Manchester City thrashed Brighton 3-1 in their last Premier League outing. He has scored three hat-tricks already this season and goals have been coming thick and fast for the 22-year-old who has been touted by many to break the all-time record for most Premier League goals in a season.

Haaland is currently averaging 1.54 goals per game in the Premier League and he can shatter the record for most goals in a season comfortably if he can continue at the same consistency. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola too has backed Haaland to break the record.

"We don't have to be a genius, if he continues in this rhythm, with the average every game, he's going to break the record, definitely. But in football maybe you score and in a few days stop to score. I don't know," said Guardiola when asked if Haaland can shatter the record currently held jointly by Andy Cole and Alan Shearer.

"I didn't speak with him, I think he's happy when the team wins and not when they lose. All the strikers I have seen in my career, Samuel Eto'o, Messi, Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Muller, Sergio Aguero, they all have incredible ambition to score goals. It's normal. He has to be like that," he added.

Both Shearer and Cole scored 34 goals each in a Premier League season - which is the most by any striker in the history of the league. Haaland has already reached the halfway mark having scored 17 so far this season and needs 18 more to break the record.

He will be looking to continue his red-hot form when Manchester City lock horns with his former club Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on October 25.

Security forces in Qatar arbitrarily arrested and abused LGBT Qataris as recently as last month, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said on Monday, in the run-up to hosting soccer's World Cup which has put a spotlight on human rights issues in the Gulf Arab state.

Homosexuality is illegal in the conservative Muslim country, and some soccer stars have raised concerns over the rights of fans travelling for the event, especially LGBT+ individuals and women, whom rights groups say Qatari laws discriminate against.

A Qatari official said in a statement that HRW's allegations "contain information that is categorically and unequivocally false," without specifying.

Organisers of the World Cup, which starts on Nov. 20 and is the first held in a Middle Eastern nation, say that everyone, no matter their sexual orientation or background, is welcome, while also warning against public displays of affection.

"Freedom of expression and nondiscrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity should be guaranteed, permanently, for all residents of Qatar, not just spectators going to Qatar for the World Cup," HRW said in a statement.

The organisation said it had interviewed six LGBT Qataris, including four transgender women, one bisexual woman and one gay man, who reported being detained between 2019 and 2022 and subjected to verbal and physical abuse, including kicking and punching.

They were detained without charge in an underground prison in Doha, HRW said, and one individual was held for two months in solitary confinement.

"All six said that police forced them to sign pledges indicating that they would 'cease immoral activity'," it said, adding that transgender women detainees were mandated to attend conversion therapy sessions at a government-sponsored clinic.

Qatar does not "license or operate 'conversion centres'," the Qatari official said.

One of the transgender Qatari women interviewed by HRW told Reuters on condition of anonymity that she was arrested several times, most recently this summer when she was held for several weeks.

Authorities had stopped her due to her appearance or for possessing make-up, the woman said, adding that she had been beaten to the point of bleeding and had her head shaved.

The behaviour centre she was mandated to attend told the woman she had a gender identity disorder and accused her of being transgender in search of "sympathy from others".

"The last thing I want is sympathy, I just want to be myself," she said.

Granit Xhaka scored a superb early goal but Premier League leaders Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw by Southampton on Sunday as Stuart Armstrong netted a deserved second-half equaliser for the home side.

The result moved Arsenal to 28 points from 11 games, two ahead of second-placed Manchester City, while Southampton are 15th with 12 points from 12 games.

The visitors looked untouchable in the opening 15 minutes as they launched wave after wave of attacks on the home goal and were rewarded with an excellent opener from Xhaka, who also netted their winner in the midweek Europa League win over PSV Eindhoven.

Bukayo Saka's flick set right-back Ben White away down the right flank and his cross was thundered into the roof of the net by Xhaka.

The Swiss international had not scored any goals with his right foot in his first 263 games for the North London club, but now has two in his last two games.

"We started well and we should have scored more but we're only human and it's tricky," White said, adding that they were disappointed with their second-half showing.

"We were sloppy in possession, we didn't win duels. It was the opposite to the first half."

Home goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu made a fine stop from Gabriel Jesus's excellent acrobatic shot as Arsenal threatened a second goal.

Jesus had another chance to score when he was sent clear by Martin Odegaard but a superb block from Mohamed Elyounoussi snuffed out the danger.

Southampton must have been relieved to be only 1-0 down at the break, but were much brighter in the second period and were deserving of their equaliser, perhaps profiting from an Arsenal side who looked increasingly weary from their midweek exertions.

A quick counter-attack on 65 minutes drew reward when Elyounoussi slipped the ball into the path of Armstrong, who was composed with his finish past goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

The home team looked the more likely to find the winner after that, but created only half-chances. They will certainly look at it as a point well earned, and perhaps a springboard to better things this campaign.

"It was always going to be a hard game, it was not the perfect start. But to get a point is amazing for us," goalscorer Armstrong said.

"We changed the shape quite quickly and set deeper to limit their chances. We knew on the counter-attack we could be dangerous."

Cristiano Ronaldo's fractious second spell at Manchester United "has to end" as soon as possible, according to the club's former defender Gary Neville. The Portuguese forward, who recently scored his 700th career goal, has been largely consigned to the bench under new manager Erik ten Hag this season.

He was left out of the squad for Saturday's draw at Chelsea in the Premier League after his petulant reaction to being an unused substitute in midweek against Tottenham Hotspur. With United showing encouraging signs of progress under Ten Hag, Neville believes the Ronaldo situation must be resolved.

"Cristiano Ronaldo is going to have to go somewhere else and play every week because he can't accept being on the bench," Neville told Sky Sports. "That's fine, but end it this week or create a truce to get to the World Cup and then end it. "It has to end."

Ronaldo walked down the tunnel minutes before the end of United's 2-0 win over Tottenham and left the ground, conduct Neville claims was unacceptable. "That's the second time Cristiano Ronaldo has left Old Trafford and got in his car before his team have got back into the changing room," Neville said. "I have to say, as someone in the dressing room, it's something that's unacceptable. When you look at whether Cristiano should be selected, Manchester United are better without him -- and Erik ten Hag knows that.

"The only thing that Cristiano and the club can do is get together in the next week and end the relationship." Another former United defender, Jaap Stam, said he understood Ronaldo's frustration but said the 37-year-old is in danger of undermining his legacy. "It's not fair to him to be remembered for this situation. He's been world class, I still think he is world class, and you don't want to go into the history books walking off the pitch because you're not happy not playing," Stam said.

Argentina will head into the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2022 as one of the major title contenders considering the quality and experience in their ranks. While Lionel Messi will be looking to bow out with the elusive trophy in what is certain to be his last World Cup, Argentina also have the likes of Angel Di Maria, Lautaro Martinez and Paulo Dybala, and Lisandro Martinez among others in their squad making them one of the favourites.

Messi will once again spearhead Argentina's charge at the World Cup and will be hoping to clinch his second major international trophy after winning the Copa America last year to bag his maiden international title. While Argentina will head into the competition as one of the favourites, Messi believes the likes of France and Brazil will be top contenders for the title.

Messi was recently asked to name his favourites for the showpiece event in Qatar. While he believes the likes of England and Spain will also be favourites, the Argentinian put his money on Brazil and defending champions France.

"There are big teams like Brazil, Germany, France, England, Spain, and I'm sure I'm forgetting some. But if I have to keep one or two, today I think Brazil and France are the two big candidates for this World Cup," said the Argentina maestro.

Explaining why he believes France and Brazil are top title contenders, Messi said both teams have a clear style of play and have the same coach for a long time now. Interestingly, Argentina defeated Brazil in the final of Copa America last year to win the trophy.

"They've had the same group (of players) for a long time, working well. France, aside from the last Euros when they were eliminated (in the last 16) and did badly, they have some impressive players. They have a clear idea and the same coach (Didier Deschamps). Brazil is similar (with Tite in charge)," Messi added.

Argentina captain Lionel Messi picks his title favourites for FIFA World Cup 2022

Former England cricket team captain Kevin Pietersen slammed Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag branding him a 'clown' for 'disrespecting' Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo has been dropped from Manchester United's squad to face Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday after he refused to come on as a substitute and left the stadium before the full-time whistle during United's 2-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday.

While Ronaldo was criticised by many for his antics, the Portuguese superstar has also managed to find support from his cult fans, who have lashed out at Ten Hag over his treatment of the club legend. Pietersen launched a scathing attack on Ten Hag after Manchester United took to Instagram to share a post featuring cricketers who have visited their stadium.

Hopping on to the T20 World Cup trend, United portrayed how several top cricketers over the years have enjoyed their time at Old Trafford and spent time with those associated with the club. Pietersen was one of the cricketers included in United's post.

The England cricket great, who is a Chelsea fan, demanded United to take his photo down while slamming Ten Hag for his treatment of Ronaldo, who he regards as the greatest footballer of the present era.

"Please take my picture down? I don't want an association with a club that's managed by a clown who is completely disrespecting the greatest footballer of our time. @cristiano is the BOSS! That clown who no one will ever remember needs a wake up!," read Pietersen's comment which has now been removed.

Ronaldo was seen storming down the tunnel with a few minutes left for the game to finish and left the stadium before the final whistle.

He has been punished by the United manager for his actions and has been dropped from the squad to face Chelsea. Ronaldo has been asked to train with the United U-21s but is likely to return to the main squad in a few days. When asked about his behaviour, Ten Hag said the 37-year-old will have to face consequences as his actions were unacceptable.

"Please take my picture down? I don't want an association with a club that's managed by a clown who is completely disrespecting the greatest footballer of our time. @cristiano is the BOSS! That clown who no one will ever remember needs a wake up!," read Pietersen's comment which has now been removed. FIFA president Gianni Infantino on Saturday criticised television broadcasters who have offered "100 times less" to screen the Women's World Cup compared to the men's.

Infantino was speaking in Auckland hours before the draw for next year's Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, and with women's football breaking new ground.

The World Cup in July-August will have 32 teams for the first time and global interest is anticipated to be at an all-time high.

But without naming specific broadcasters, Infantino said offers submitted for the television rights were far too low.

"Broadcasters offer us 100 times less than what they offer us for the men's World Cup," Infantino told reporters.

He accused television companies of "pushing us to do more for equality and at the same time we are not going to accept these offers".

Infantino said that FIFA had invested one billion dollars into women's football in recent years.

The 2015 and 2019 Women's World Cups made a financial loss, but Infantino said: "The next World Cup will cost us around $400 million and we hope to break even."

For the first time, FIFA plans to sell the commercial rights separate from the men's tournament.

"We are trying to commercialise the Women's World Cup for the first time on its own," he said.

The FIFA boss also doubled down on assurances that gay fans who travel to Qatar for the men's World Cup next month will be safe, despite homosexuality being a criminal offence there.

"I have said it (before), I repeat it -- whatever nationality, background, gender, sexual orientation, everyone is welcome in Qatar," Infantino said.

Infantino also confirmed that the FIFA Clearing House, aimed at regulating the extra payments around transfer fees, will come into force on November 16.

"This will finally bring some transparency and accountability into the whole transfer market," said Infantino.

"Payments to strange places or strange bank accounts will not be tolerated any more."

He said the transfer market currently generates about six to seven billion dollars every year and predicts the figure will rise.

"We want to control that and make sure the money goes where it is supposed to."

Kylian Mbappe scored two goals to help Paris St Germain to a comfortable 3-0 win at Ajaccio on Friday, maintaining their unbeaten run in Ligue 1 this season.

The first 10 minutes were an even affair, with Ajaccio trying to keep the ball and build possession while PSG forwards waited for a chance to attack.

Ajaccio carved out the first chance of the game when Mounaim El Idrissy missed a shot from a difficult angle in the fourth minute.

Ajaccio keeper Benjamin Leroy then denied Lionel Messi when he saved a deflected free-kick effort in the 13th minute.

The deadlock was broken in the 24th minute when French forward Mbappe picked up a through ball from Argentine Messi and lifted it over Leroy to give PSG the lead.

Aston Villa's 3-0 defeat at Fulham spelt the end of Steven Gerrard's reign as manager on Thursday as the former England skipper was sacked less than two hours after the final whistle.

Gerrard, who replaced Dean Smith last November, was verbally abused by Villa fans and taunted by the Fulham faithful at Craven Cottage as his side slumped to a chaotic defeat in which Douglas Luiz was sent off and Tyrone Mings scored an own goal.

"We would like to thank Steven for his hard work and commitment and wish him well for the future," Aston Villa said in a statement.

There had been positive signs in the loss to Chelsea at the weekend but Villa were pitiful against Fulham with Gerrard admitting he was shocked by their first-half display.

Harrison Reed gave Fulham the lead in the 36th minute and Aleksandar Mitrovic scored from the penalty spot for his eighth goal of the season before a Mings own goal while trying to clear a Neeskens Kebano cross completed Villa's misery.

Luiz was sent off just past the hour for a soft head butt on Mitrovic who fell to the ground theatrically.

Villa's sixth defeat in 11 league games left them in 17th place with nine points and only out of the relegation zone because they have scored two more goals than Wolves.

Gerrard looked grim-faced as the final whistle sounded, walking quickly down the tunnel.

For Marco Silva's Fulham the picture looks far brighter as they climbed to ninth spot with 15 points thanks to their biggest win in the Premier League for nine years.

Villa face Brentford at the weekend but the club's hierarchy decided that there was no time to waste with the team's confidence shattered and a relegation battle looming.

Gerrard appeared resigned to his fate after the game and made no attempt to sugar-coat his position.

"I thought I picked a team that could build on the performance (against Chelsea) at the weekend, but I got the opposite," Gerrard told Amazon Prime.

"We were second best for the majority of the first half and were lucky to still be in the game at halftime, it was down to out keeper making some outstanding saves.

"The performance was nowhere near good enough."

Fulham were far more hungry than Villa throughout. Willian forced a great save from Emiliano Martinez before Fulham went ahead when the keeper punched a corner out to Reed who took a touch and smashed a shot into the net.

Villa still looked capable of salvaging something but not after Luiz got involved with Mitrovic in what Gerrard later described as a "moment of madness".

After checking a VAR screen, referee Michael Oliver showed the red card to Luiz and minutes later Matty Cash stretched to block a Mitrovic shot but the ball struck his arm and Martinez could not save the Serbian's penalty.

Villa were deflated before another error from Mings completed their misery and Gerrard's fate was soon confirmed.

Aston Villa's 3-0 defeat at Fulham spelt the end of Steven Gerrard's reign as manager on Thursday as the former England skipper was sacked less than two hours after the final whistle.

"The performance was nowhere near good enough." Also Read: Manchester United youngster Mason Greenwood released on bail after attempt to rape charge Fulham were far more hungry than Villa throughout. Both Ronaldo and Messi have enjoyed unparalleled success on the football pitch and the duo might not admit but they have made each other better players by pushing each other to be their best. Recently, FC Barcelona head coach Xavi explained how in their battle for supremacy, Ronaldo helped Messi become a better player.

Xavi, who witnessed Messi grow from a phenomenal young talent to a bonafide legend at Camp Nou, spoke about the Argentine's epic rivalry with Ronaldo which gave him the extra push to get better.

"Cristiano gave him an extra push to become a better player. Cristiano and Leo probably won't admit it. I am convinced they used to keep an eye on each other. If you're competitive, you want to be the best," Xavi said in the BBC documentary 'Messi: The Enigma'.

Messi and Ronaldo have won a staggering 12 Ballon d'Ors between them with the Argentine claiming the prestigious award eight times. The duo won the Ballon D'Or between them for ten straight years before Real Madrid's Luka Modric ended their streak in 2018.

Barcelona head coach Xavi explains how Cristiano Ronaldo made Lionel Messi a better player

Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag on Friday confirmed Cristiano Ronaldo refused to come on as a substitute in the club's 2-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday. An angry Ronaldo had stormed off the pitch and left the stadium even before the full-time whistle.

Ronaldo, who has struggled for starts under Ten Hag, was criticised by many for his antics against Spurs as fans accused him of trying to steal the limelight from the team after their brilliant performance on the pitch. Ronaldo, who was one of the substitutes for United, had walked down the tunnel in frustration.

While many believed it was because he was not called upon as a sub, Ten Hag on Friday revealed Ronaldo refused to play. "Yes," replied the Manchester United manager when asked if Ronaldo had refused to come on.

Ten Hag has decided to punish the 37-year-old United legend for his actions and has already dropped him from the squad which will face Chelsea in United's next Premier League outing on Sunday. Ronaldo has reportedly also been asked to train with United's U-21 team for the next few days.

Opening up about his decision to drop Ronaldo for the Chelsea clash, Ten Hag said as the manager of the club, he is responsible for the culture in the team and needs to ensure the standards and the values at the club are not compromised.

"I am the manager, I am responsible for the culture here and I have to set standards and values and I have to control them. In the team, we have values and standards and I have to control that," said Ten Hag in a press conference ahead of the Chelsea clash.

"It will (be) a (time for) reflection for him, but also for everyone else. Football is a team sport and you have to fulfil certain standards. And I have to control it," he added.

This was not the first time Ronaldo decided to leave the stadium early while United were still involved in the game. The Portuguese had done the same during the club's pre-season friendly against Rayo Vallecano.

Ten Hag said he had told Ronaldo his actions were unacceptable but the 37-year-old did it for the second time on Wednesday and will have to face the consequences. However, the United manager insisted the Portuguese remains an important member of the squad and that it's not the end for him at the club.

"After Vallecano, I told him it was unacceptable... this is the second time, there are consequences. We miss him tomorrow. It's a miss for the squad but it's important for the attitude and mentality of the group and now we have to focus on Chelsea as that is important," said Ten Hag.

"The statement is also clear. He remains an important player in the squad," he added.

'There are consequences': Erik Ten Hag confirms Cristiano Ronaldo refused to come on as a sub against Spurs

Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence after being dropped from the club's next Premier League clash against Chelsea. United boss Erik Ten Hag has decided to drop Ronaldo from the squad to face Chelsea after the Portuguese forward's antics during United's match against Tottenham Hotspur earlier this week.

Ronaldo had left the pitch before the final whistle during United's clash against Tottenham and had also reportedly left the stadium before the players reached the dressing room to celebrate their 2-0 win. Ronaldo was reportedly not happy as Ten Hag refused to bring him as a substitute during the game.

The 37-year-old, who had expressed his desire to leave United earlier this summer, was seen storming down the tunnel before the final whistle against Tottenham. He was widely criticised by fans and former players for his action in what has become a major talking point after United's fantastic win.

Reacting to the criticism, Ronaldo took to Instagram to break his silence for the first time after the incident and said he is the same professional that he was 20 years ago and wants to live and play respectfully. Ronaldo said he will keep supporting his teammates and continue working hard to be ready to contribute when called upon.

"As I’ve always done throughout my career, I try to live and play respectfully towards my colleagues, my adversaries and my coaches. That hasn’t changed. I haven’t changed. I’m the same person and the same professional that I’ve been for the last 20 years playing elite football, and respect has always played a very important role in my decision making process," Ronaldo said in a statement.

"I started very young, the older and most experienced players examples were always very important to me. Therefore, later on, I’ve always tried to set the example myself for the youngsters that grew in all the teams that I’ve represented. Unfortunately that’s not always possible and sometimes the heat of the moment get’s the best of us.

"Right now, I just feel that I have to keep working hard in Carrington, support my teammates and be ready for everything in any given game. Giving in to the pressure is not an option. It never was. This is Manchester United, and united we must stand. Soon we’ll be together again," he concluded.

The FIFA World Cup is set to kick off next month, on November 20, in Qatar. It is to be noted that Qatar will be the first Arab state to host the World Cup and, hence, the excitement of the football fans knows no boundaries. Ahead of the mega event's commencement, Argentina captain Lionel Messi picked his favourites and has not named his own side.

Messi, who has announced that he will be playing his World Cup, will be eager to take his side to the coveted title in Qatar. However, when asked to pick his favourites, the 35-year-old has named Neymar-starrer Brazil and France as the two of the strongest contenders.

"We always say the same great teams... but, if I have to choose, Brazil and France are the two great candidates to win the World Cup. They've had the same group (of players) for a long time, working well," Messi said during an interview with DirectTV Sports.

"France, aside from the last Euros when they were eliminated (in the last 16) and did badly, they have some impressive players. They have a clear idea and the same coach (Didier Deschamps). Brazil is a bit the same (under Tite)," he added.

Talking about Argentina, the Messi-starrer have also been in good form in the recent past. They are heading into the marquee tournament with an unbeaten streak of 35 games (since 2019). In fact, they are just two more matches away to surpass Italy's tally to remain unbeaten for the most number of matches.

In last year, Messi-led Argentina had won the Copa America, beating Brazil to clinch the continental trophy. Hence, Messi & Co. also have the winning momentum under their belt and will look to go the distance this time around in the World Cup. In last edition of the World Cup, Argentina had lost to eventual winners France, 4-3, to bow out in the Round of 16.

Indonesia will demolish and rebuild a football stadium where a stampede killed more than 130 people this month, President Joko Widodo said on Tuesday as he vowed to "thoroughly transform" the sport in the soccer-mad nation.

The president, popularly known as Jokowi, was speaking to reporters at the state palace after meeting Gianni Infantino, head of world soccer governing body FIFA.

"Kanjuruhan stadium in Malang...we will demolish it and rebuild according to FIFA standards," he said.

The deadly stampede after a league match in the city of Malang on Oct 1 has been blamed on police firing tear gas in the stadium, a crowd control measure banned by FIFA.

The president said he had agreed with Infantino on significant changes to how the sport was managed in Indonesia.

"We agreed to thoroughly transform Indonesian soccer," he said. "Every aspect of preparation...needs to be based on FIFA standards."

The meeting between Jokowi and Infantino comes after Indonesia and FIFA agreed to form a joint task-force in the wake of the stadium tragedy, and as the country prepares to host the Under-20 World Cup next year.

Speaking alongside Jokowi, Infantino said FIFA's first priority was to ensure the safety of both players and fans in the Southeast Asian nation.

"This is a football country, a country where football is a passion for over 100 million people," he said. "We owe it to them that when they see a match they are safe and secure."

Infantino, who presented the president with a red FIFA jersey with his name printed across it, said the global soccer body would work closely with the government to ensure all stadiums met safety requirements, and that the Under-20 World Cup ran smoothly next year.

Under pressure to explain what caused one of the world's deadliest stadium disasters, a fact-finding team formed by the government released a report last week which concluded that the "excessive" and "indiscriminate" use of tear gas was the leading cause of death.

As fans attempted to exit the stadium after the defeat of the home side Arema FC by Persebaya Surabaya, they were caught in a deadly crush, with many, including more than 40 minors, dying from asphyxiation.

The report also identified other contributing factors, including the stadium being filled beyond capacity, locked exit doors, and a push by league officials to hold the game at night to secure better ratings for a local broadcaster, despite a request by police to hold a match between fierce rivals during the day.

The fact-finding team also said that more than three hours of CCTV footage about an hour after the match had been deleted. The team has requested that police provide this footage.

The team also called on the head of the Indonesian Football Association to resign.

Qatari landlords eyeing profit from the looming World Cup have been kicking out a growing number of mostly foreign tenants, sometimes with just a few days' notice. More than one million football fans are expected to descend on the capital Doha during the November-December tournament, putting a strain on the tiny Gulf nation.

Landlords who have spotted an opening to increase rents "show no pity" and the market is dominated by "greed", said a representative of a real estate company, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Reem, a foreigner working for a major Qatari company, was told she had a week to leave her apartment.

The woman, using a pseudonym to avoid blowback from her employer, told AFP the owner of the block wanted the dozens of apartments he has rented to her employers emptied so they could earn more during the World Cup.

"We felt humiliated," Reem said.

The company has moved Reem and other employees into a hotel, but they can only stay there until November 15, five days before the tournament kicks off. They were told they will then move into "temporary" apartments, she said.

"Leaving home with all our belongings in bags and boxes to go into a hotel room was a disaster."

Other tenants in Doha told AFP they were similarly forced to choose between paying more on rent or leaving.

Properties in the tower where Reem used to live are advertised on booking.com for $1,700 a night during the World Cup with a minimum stay of 14 nights.

In the two years she had been in the apartment, Reem said rent was $2,500 a month. Most fans will be staying in hotels, apartments, cruise ships and desert camps booked through the official World Cup portal.

Despite some concerns, organisers have insisted there will be enough accommodation for all fans in the emirate of just 2.8 million people. To ease the crunch, FIFA recently released thousands of hotel rooms it had reserved, which experts have said could push prices down in the coming weeks.

Some World Cup visitors are turning to the open market for luxury apartments or better locations near specific stadiums, and the prices advertised for some Doha properties highlight owners' sky-high hopes. On Airbnb, apartments for two people go for $2,500 a night.

A villa for the full 29 days of the World Cup will cost fans booking through the online platform at least $13,000 -- but prices can go into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Some Doha residents are putting their flats and houses up for rent and fleeing Qatar for the month. Adel, who listed his small apartment on Airbnb for $900 a night, said that "demand was very high" when he first advertised it.

But he had to cancel the reservations after Airbnb asked him to provide a statement from his landlord approving the sublet. Rents have also risen sharply for tenants coming to the end of their leases in recent months.

While Qatari law allows for an increase of up to 10 percent for a lease renewal, rents in some districts of Doha have risen by as much as 40 percent over the past year, according to Anum Hassan, head of research in Qatar at international consultancy firm Valustrat.

A Western diplomat in Doha said embassy staff have demanded increased salaries to meet their rent payments.

"Rents... will stay high for a while," said Nabil Ghorra, a 59-year-old Lebanese-American who lives in Doha's upscale Pearl district.

"I feel that there are people taking advantage of the situation, but this happens all over the world when there's an event" like the World Cup.

Reports in the French media had claimed Mbappe wants to leave as he is not happy at PSG and felt betrayed by club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi after signing a fresh deal at the club this summer. "I was as shocked by this news as everyone else. People may think I'm involved, I'm not at all. I was taking a nap, my entourage was at my little brother's game. We were stunned when we found out," Mbappe said.

"Afterwards, we had to deal with it, we had a match to play. I just wanted to say that it's completely false, I'm very happy here," he added.

Liverpool ignited their Premier League season as Mohamed Salah's late goal earned them a stormy 1-0 win over Manchester City to leave Arsenal four points clear at the top on Sunday.

Salah, fresh from his quickfire hat-trick in midweek against Rangers in the Champions League, latched onto a long clearance by goalkeeper Allison in the 76th minute and fired into the net to inflict a first defeat of the season on champions City.

City, who could have gone 16 points clear of their hosts with a win, had a Phil Foden goal disallowed, while Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp was shown a red card for remonstrating with a linesman after a tackle on Salah.

Arsenal made it nine wins from their first 10 games with Bukayo Saka's goal earning them a 1-0 victory at Leeds United.

Mikel Arteta's side have 27 points from 10 games with City and Tottenham Hotspur on 23. Chelsea are in fourth spot with 19 points, with a game in hand, thanks to a 2-0 win at Aston Villa courtesy of a double by England midfielder Mason Mount.

Manchester United are fifth with 16 points from nine games after drawing 0-0 at home to sixth-placed Newcastle United, who have 15.

Despite Arsenal's flying start to the season the popular theory is that relentless City are primed to claim a fifth title in six seasons.

But on a rare off day for City's goal machine Erling Haaland, Liverpool produced a performance that suggests it is far too early to disregard Juergen Klopp's side, who have 13 points from nine games after a rocky start.

Clashes between the sides have produced some classics over the past few seasons and while Sunday's match had plenty of the usual quality, it was a blood and thunder affair that occasionally boiled over.

Guardiola was furious when Foden's goal, with the score at 0-0, was ruled out after referee Anthony Taylor checked a pitch-side monitor and decided there had been a foul by Haaland on Fabinho in the build-up.

Salah had been denied by a great save from Ederson but when he found himself one-on-one again he made no mistake. Alisson's quarterback-style clearance was missed by Joao Cancelo and the Egyptian forward ran through to dink a shot over City's keeper.

With tackles flying in Klopp was livid when Salah was not given a foul and he was sent from the technical area.

Klopp was calmer later, admitting that he had probably deserved a red card.

On the result, the German said: "Perfect. Performance, really, really good, in an incredibly intense game.

"We defended at an incredibly high level for 99 minutes almost. They had their moments but especially in the box we did extremely well. This was for us obviously big today. We showed up today and that is all we wanted to do."

The defeat was City's first in 23 away games in the Premier League and Guardiola was left bemused by the decision to disallow Foden's goal.

"The referee said play on, play on, there were a thousand million fouls like this and this one they gave because we scored a goal," Guardiola, who said coins were thrown at him, complained.

"We lost because we make a mistake but this is Anfield."

Arsenal's game earlier had suffered a lengthy delay after a power outage at Elland Road. But they returned after 38 minutes to take the points in a frantic game thanks to Saka's first-half goal from a tight angle following a through pass by Martin Odegaard.

Patrick Bamford missed a penalty for Leeds who suffered their first home loss of the season.

"Big momentum for us, we've won another game. We need to keep this going and today we showed we can win no matter what," Saka said.

Chelsea remain unbeaten in six games since Graham Potter became manager, winning the last five in succession in all competitions.

They were given a helping hand as Villa's Tyrone Mings made a terrible mistake to allow Mount to score in the sixth minute. Mount then sealed the points with a second-half free kick.

In Sunday's other match, Declan Rice's earned West Ham United a point with the equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Southampton who remain in the relegation zone.

Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood was Monday remanded in custody after appearing in court charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault. The 21-year-old forward looked at his family from the dock before he was taken down the steps at Manchester Magistrates' Court. All three charges relate to the same woman.

Greenwood was first held in January over allegations relating to a young woman after images and videos were posted online. He had been on bail since but was arrested on Saturday for an alleged breach of conditions. Members of Greenwood's family sat in the public gallery in the small courtroom, along with members of the press.

Wearing a grey hooded Nike top and grey jogging bottoms and flanked by two dock officers, the footballer spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address. The attempted rape is alleged to have taken place in October 2021. The controlling and coercive behaviour relates to a period between November 2018 and October this year. He is alleged to have made threatening and derogatory comments towards the complainant, as well as accessing and monitoring her social media accounts.

The charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm is dated December 2021. Within hours of the allegations surfacing online at the beginning of the year, Greenwood, who has made one appearance for England, was suspended from playing or training with Manchester United. Nike suspended and later terminated its sponsorship deal with the player, while Electronic Arts confirmed his removal from active squads on its FIFA 22 game.

Greenwood will appear before a crown court in Manchester on November 21. The defendant's legal team told reporters they would be submitting a further application for bail. A product of the United academy, Greenwood has played 129 times for United, scoring 35 goals. He signed a new deal in February 2021, keeping him at Old Trafford until at least 2025. He made his England debut against Iceland in September 2020, but he and Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden were sent home after a breach of the team's coronavirus guidelines.

On Monday (October 17), FIFA has made a big claim that in excess of one lakh children will be attending matches in the ongoing U-17 Women's World Cup, being held in India (in Bhubaneswar, Margao and Navi Mumbai). Nandini Arora, one of the Project Directors of the marquee tournament, claimed that the showpiece event will see to 1,20,000 kids witnessing the proceedings live.

"We must thank the local municipal bodies in each of the host cities, the police and the teachers accompanying these children for helping us pull off this wonderful initiative, that in total will see close to 120,000 kids get to watch a match from a stadium," said Arora.

Meanwhile, FIFA also reacted to the major development and shared a statement claiming that thousands of children have enjoyed some world-class footballing action and many more will also be able to do the same in the coming days. It goes without saying that such an initiative will help many young football fans get further inspired from the overall atmosphere. He added, "It was a hard time for a lot of people, especially for those who were here for the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2017. Having experienced the passion that we did back then, it was hard to be unsure if it (the 2022 tournament) could happen in India. So, now seeing the games being played, it's a real pleasure for all of us."

US First Lady Jill Biden was reportedly greeted with loud jeers from the spectators while she was attending the National Football League final at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.

According to Fox News, prior to the match between the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles, Jill was booed by the fans when she stepped on the field and stood alongside cancer survivors when the “Fly Eagles Fly” rendition was being played out on Sunday.

She was there at the event to promote the White House’s Cancer Moonshot initiative. She was joined on the field by cancer patients and survivors as well as their families.

There is no video to show that Jill was getting booed, as the song that was being played at the time was so loud that it made it difficult to differentiate the noise. But many on social media were quick to point out the incident.

President Joe Biden and Jill are ardent supporters of the Eagles. Earlier, he was at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis during Super Bowl LII when Philadelphia won their first title in a classic game against the Tom Brady-led New England Patriots.

The president praised Eagles fans in May 2021.

"Philadelphia fans are the most informed and most obnoxious fans in the world," Biden said at the time.

Notably, this is not the first time that a noted personality is getting booed at an NFL stadium this year.

Last week, Kim Kardashian was heavily booed by fans at SoFi Stadium in California during the game between the Los Angeles Rams and the Dallas Cowboys.

US First Lady Jill Biden booed by fans at football match: Report

Erling Haaland has taken the Premier League by storm ever since his arrival at Manchester City earlier this summer. The Norweigan striker has been scoring goals for fun and has been shattering records at will for the reigning Premier League champions.

Haaland has already scored 20 goals in 14 appearances for the club across all competitions this season in what has been a sensational campaign for the Manchester City star. However, it could all have been very different for Haaland as the 22-year-old was allegedly close to joining Premier League club Leeds United a few years back.

Liverpool midfielder James Milner has made a stunning claim regarding Haaland's transfer stating that the Norweigan striker had once told him he intended to join Leeds United in the Premier League and return to his city of birth.

Milner spoke with a young Haaland when the Norweigan was still at RB Salzburg. They met during Liverpool's Champions League meeting against Salzburg where Haaland told Milner about his plans of joining Leeds United in the future. The Liverpool midfielder said he was disappointed as Haaland lied to him about his future plans.

"I can confirm that he said he was going to sign for Leeds a few years ago when we played against him. He was obviously lying, so that’s disappointing," Milner told Viaplay.

Milner came up against Haaland on Sunday as Liverpool defeated Manchester City 1-0 in the Premier League. The English midfielder revealed he had a brief chat with Haaland about Leeds when the two met during the game. "We had a little chat, yeah," said Milner.

Haaland was born in Leeds as his father Alf Inge Haaland was playing for Leeds United at the time. Alf spent three years at Leeds before moving to Manchester City in 2000. Haaland followed his father's footsteps in joining City from Borussia Dortmund earlier this summer.

One of the best young strikers in the world at present, Haaland has since been a revelation for the reigning Premier League champions and has been on a goal-scoring spree across competitions.

World Cup hosts Qatar will stage the 2023 Asian Cup, the Asian Football Confederation said on Monday, after China withdrew earlier this year because of Covid. "The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) executive committee has today confirmed the Qatar Football Association (QFA) as the host association for the AFC Asian Cup 2023," the Malaysia-based body said in a statement.

China in June 2019 won the bid to host the event but withdrew in May this year because of its "zero-Covid" policy, leaving the AFC scrambling to find a new host for its flagship men's 24-team football tournament.

The tournament had been due to be held in 10 Chinese cities from June 16 to July 16 next year. China is the last major economy still trying to stamp out Covid-19 within its borders, through a series of harsh measures involving snap lockdowns, mass testing and travel restrictions.

The Asian Cup is staged every four years. Qatar won the tournament’s last edition, in 2019, which was hosted by the United Arab Emirates. South Korea and Indonesia were the other two countries that participated in the bidding to host after China’s withdrawal. Qatar will host the World Cup starting next month.

Paris St Germain and Brazil soccer star Neymar Jr. and eight others went on trial in Barcelona on Monday charged with fraud and corruption over the player's transfer to Barcelona from Santos in 2013.

Neymar arrived at the court after landing on a flight from Paris where he lives. He took the time to sign an autograph for a fan at the city's airport, Reuters witnesses said.

Spanish prosecutors are seeking a two-year prison term and a 10 million euro ($9.8 million) fine for Neymar. They are also seeking a five-year jail term for former Barca president Sandro Rosell and an 8.4 million euro fine for the club.

The case centres on the claim made by Brazilian investment firm DIS, which owned 40% of the rights to Neymar when he was at Santos, that it lost out on its rightful cut from the player's transfer because the value of the deal was understated.

DIS has demanded a much heavier five-year jail term for Neymar, fines worth 149 million euros in total, and for the player to be disqualified from playing for the length of any sentence handed down by the judge.

Along with Neymar, 30, the defendants include his parents, representatives of the two clubs, former Barca presidents Josep Maria Bartomeu and Rosell, and former Santos president Odilio Rodrigues.

Dressed in black, Neymar and his father talked and laughed with former Barcelona president Rosell in a hall in front of where the trial started shortly after 10am.

"Neymar, with the connivance of his parents and the boards of directors of Barcelona and Santos, betrayed the trust of my clients," DIS lawyer Paulo Nasser told a news conference in Barcelona on Thursday.

"The real cost of the transaction (between Santos and Barcelona) was 82 million euros, and only 17 million appeared as the official transfer," Nasser said.

He said Neymar was also not sold to the highest bidder, as there were other clubs that offered up to 60 million euros for his services. All the defendants have previously denied several times any wrongdoing.

Law firm Baker McKenzie, who is defending Neymar and his family, said in a statement that they will argue that the Spanish courts "lack jurisdiction to prosecute the Neymar family" because the transfer involved a Brazilian national in Brazil.

Neymar, a key member of the Brazil squad heading to the World Cup in Qatar next month, lost an appeal over the case in Spain's High Court in 2017, clearing the way for the trial.

It was unclear if Neymar would be asked to stay for the whole hearing, which is expected to last seven days.

Neymar was crucial to PSG's victory against arch-rivals Olympique de Marseille on Sunday evening, scoring the only goal of the match. The team will face Ajaccio on Friday in Ligue 1, before hosting Maccabi Haifa in a Champions League game on Oct. 25.

On Monday afternoon the court is due to hear from André Cury, Barca's former point man in Brazil, whose statement and details on the negotiations over the player are expected to be key for the case.

Neymar is scheduled to testify on Friday, but he could seek to change the date.

Graham Potter's impressive start as Chelsea manager continued as Mason Mount's double gave his side a 2-0 Premier League victory at struggling Aston Villa on Sunday.

Chelsea are unbeaten in six games since Potter replaced Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge and the win at Villa was their fifth in a row in all competitions.

They were given a helping hand by their hosts with Mount cashing in on a horribly misguided defensive header by Tyrone Mings in the sixth minute.

Villa responded well and created several good chances before the break but were frustrated by Chelsea's keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga who made a series of saves including a miraculous one to deny Danny Ings an equaliser.

Any hope of Villa salvaging something from the game disappeared in the 65th minute when Mount's dipping free kick deceived keeper Emiliano Martinez.

Victory left Chelsea in fourth place with 19 points from nine games, four behind London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Villa are 16th, one point above the relegation zone, with pressure mounting on manager Steven Gerrard who was taunted by Chelsea fans throughout the game.

With England manager Gareth Southgate sitting in the stands to run the rule over some of his England squad, the day could not have been more different for Mings and Mount.

Mings has lost his place in the England squad and hardly boosted his prospects of a recall for the Qatar World Cup when he gifted Mount Chelsea's opener.

Ben Chilwell's pass was deflected up in the air and Mings got his clearing header all wrong, glancing it backwards towards his own goal where Mount pounced to volley home.

Chelsea's goal led something of a charmed life after that with Arrizabalaga producing excellent saves to keep out efforts by John McGinn and Jacob Ramsey as Villa attacked with verve.

His best effort, however, was springing through the air to keep out an Ings header from point-blank range.

Raheem Sterling was denied by the woodwork as Chelsea looked dangerous going forward but rocky at the back.

Mings's afternoon got worse when he gave away the foul which gave Mount the chance to size up a free kick.

The England midfielder got plenty of movement on the ball but Martinez should have done more to keep it out.

Villa were subdued after that but while there were boos at the final whistle, Gerrard would have been encouraged by the way his team caused Chelsea problems.

Mason Mount bags a brace as Chelsea beat Aston Villa 2-0 to maintain winning streak in Premier League

Manchester United and an unusually goal-shy Cristiano Ronaldo were unable to find a way past Newcastle United at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Sunday in a 0-0 draw that kept both teams in the top six.

Showing a passion and solidity sometimes lacking from their hosts, Eddie Howe's Newcastle had the best chance of the game with an extraordinary double header from Joelinton in the first half that came first off the crossbar then off the post.

Newcastle's Callum Wilson also had a penalty shout denied.

Feted before the game for reaching 700 club goals in his career, Ronaldo twice had the ball in the back of the net. But he was offside for the first, while the second was disallowed when he cheekily nicked the ball off Newcastle to stroke it home after claiming a free kick had been taken.

Ronaldo has only scored twice this season for Manchester United, with some pundits already declaring the twilight of his brilliant career. The result left Manchester United fifth on 16 points, with Newcastle sixth on 15 points with one more game played.

Antony was again Manchester United's brightest spark, with one close-range shot stopped by Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope's shins. Despite seeing plenty of the ball, however, he was unable to wriggle past Newcastle's dogged defence or find the perfect cross for his fellow strikers.

Marcus Rashford, on as a substitute for Ronaldo, set up Fred with a late chance but the midfielder pulled his shot just wide. Rashford then missed a header in the final minute as Manchester United pressed for what would have been an undeserved winner.

Roared on non-stop by their travelling army, Newcastle had the best of the first half, frequently finding promising positions after sloppy passing by their opponents.

But without injured striker Alexander Isak, the visitors failed to apply the finishing touch their efforts deserved.

In the second half, Newcastle were forced more onto the backfoot, but in truth had little trouble holding out against the hosts.

Erik ten Hag's subdued strike force will again come under a harsh spotlight after an unimpressive mid-week Europa League performance when they missed countless chances and left it late for a 1-0 win over Omonia Nicosia.

Premier League: Newcastle United frustrate Manchester United and misfiring Ronaldo in goalless draw

Hosts India conceded three goals in the second half to suffer a humiliating 0-3 defeat to Morocco in their second Group A match and crash out of the FIFA Women's Under-17 World Cup here on Friday.

Debutants Morocco scored through El Madani (50th minute), Yasmine Zouhir (61st) and Cherif Djennah (90+1) to script their maiden win in the tournament.

India, who were also making their debut as automatic qualifiers as hosts, had lost to USA 0-8 in the opening match on Tuesday. They take on Brazil in their last group match on October 17, which will only be of academic interest.

Morroco still remained in contention for a quarterfinal berth with three points after title contenders Brazil and USA played out a 1-1 draw in another Group A match here earlier in the day.

Brazil and USA now have four points each after two matches. Morocco, who had lost to Brazil 0-1 on Tuesday, play against USA on October 17.

It was a much improved Indian side after their humbling 0-8 defeat against USA and they dominated briefly in the early part of the first half which was largely evenly-contested. But the hosts lost the plot in the second half, conceding three goals to lose the match to the African team.

Goalkeeper Melody Keisham, who replaced Anjali Munda after the USA match, had a forgettable game as her mistake led to Morocco's second goal.

In the eight minute of the match, India put pressure on the opposition defence. Nitu Linda collected the ball in Morocco box and she tried to set up Anita Kumari but a defender cleared the ball. Nothing came out of the Indian corner.

Four minutes later, it was Nitu again who won the ball after pressing her marker but her pass towards Anita was blocked by a Moroccan player.

After that brief domination by the Indians, Morocco were on ascendency and they were unlucky not to have taken the lead with the crossbar saving India in the 18th minute.

Melody failed to collect the ball cleanly after a Hajar Said attempt. El Madani then sent a cross but two Moroccan players could not connect it but captain Zouhir was there to fire in a powerful shot but only to hit the crossbar.

Another Morocco chance came right at the half-time whistle when Melody again failed to collect the ball but India survived as both the sides were locked 0-0 at half time.

Five minutes into the second half, Naketa handled the ball inside the Indian box and the referee had no hesitation to point to the dreaded spot and El Madani stepped up to score from the penalty.

Morocco doubled the lead after Melody fumbled while trying to collect a cross from the right and captain Yasmine Zouhir slotted the ball home with a left footer in the 61st minute.

Morocco then added salt to India's injury as Cherif Djennah outran Indian markers on the left before scoring a clinical goal in the first minute of the added time.

"We fought hard but lost the match. We will try to give our best against Brazil," said captain Astam Oraon after the match.

"It was a much improved performance by the team (than the match against USA). But we made mistakes including by the goalkeeper (second goal)," head coach Thomas Dennerby said.
