Manchester City teenager Rico Lewis marked his first senior start with his maiden goal for the club to spark a comeback in a 3-1 defeat of Sevilla to complete their unbeaten Champions League group campaign on Wednesday. With the prolific Erling Haaland absent as he recovers from injury, Argentine striker Julian Alvarez impressed with a goal and two assists and Riyad Mahrez was also on the scoresheet.

The night, however, belonged to Lewis. His maiden goal also made him the youngest player to score on his first start in CL history, surpassing Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema. City was confirmed as Group G winners and Sevilla was assured of the third spot, and Pep Guardiola made seven changes to his starting line-up with 17-year-old right-back Lewis seizing his opportunity at the Etihad Stadium. Rafa Mir gave Sevilla the lead in the 31st minute with a pinpoint header past City reserve keeper Stefan Ortega and the hosts struggled to make much impression against the Spanish side.

Guardiola took off Jack Grealish at halftime and sent on Rodri and City was a different proposition as they extended their unbeaten home run in the Champions League to 23 games. Lewis, joined in the starting side by 20-year-old Cole Palmer, levelled in the 52nd minute when he ran on to a slide rule pass by Alvarez and lashed a right-footed shot into the net past keeper Yassine Bounou. Lewis, aged 17 years and 346 days, became the youngest player to score on his first Champions League start, breaking the record held by Karim Benzema who was 17 years and 352 days when he scored for Olympique Lyonnais.

"What a goal. He's a fantastic player, so intelligent. He understands everything. He made a fantastic goal and played really well," Guardiola said. "In the first half the guys tried. The second half was better, with really good goals. I'm happy for everyone." Alvarez, who started his fourth successive Champions League game, was arguably City's best player. The 22-year-old former River Plate player produced a composed finish to put City ahead in the 73rd minute, taking the ball around Bounou and firing high into the net after being played in by a sublime pass from substitute Kevin de Bruyne. With City dominating, Mahrez sealed the victory with a clinical finish after another assist by Alvarez.

Kieran Tierney’s first-half goal secured a 1-0 home victory for Arsenal over FC Zurich and top spot in Europa League Group A on Thursday, but Manchester United could only finish runners-up in their pool and will go into February’s playoffs. Arsenal spurned numerous opportunities to double their advantage and were almost made to pay. Zurich had the ball in the back of the net from a rare foray forward in the second half, but Adrian Guerrero was flagged for offside, and they wasted a number of late chances to snatch a draw.

Barcelona's Pique to retire, will play last home game on Saturday

AC Milan reached the Champions League knock-out stage for the first time in nine years on Wednesday with a 4-0 victory over Salzburg, while RB Leipzig also qualified by thrashing Shakhtar Donetsk. Paris Saint-Germain will be the team group winners want to avoid in Monday's last-16 draw after missing out on top spot in Group H despite a 2-1 win at Juventus, as Benfica hammered Maccabi Haifa 6-1 to snatch a first place on total away goals.

Seven-time European champions Milan knew a point would be enough to send them into the last 16 for the first time since the 2013-14 season after a group-stage exit last term. "These kinds of nights is what we wish for," Milan coach Stefano Pioli told Sky Sport. "We wanted to show we improved compared to last season in the Champions League. We're ambitious now, so let's see what happens next."

Pioli's side eased any nerves at the San Siro inside 14 minutes as Olivier Giroud headed home. Milan's return to the knockouts was all but confirmed less than a minute after half-time when Giroud headed the ball across goal for Rade Krunic to nod past Philipp Kohn in the Salzburg goal. Giroud added his second before the hour mark, allowing the home fans the opportunity to celebrate for the remainder of the match and Junior Messias added further gloss to the scoreline in added time.

Milan qualified from Group E in second place behind Chelsea, who came from behind to beat Dinamo Zagreb 2-1 at Stamford Bridge with goals from Raheem Sterling and debutant Denis Zakaria. Leipzig also only needed to avoid defeat to go through against Ukrainians Shakhtar in Warsaw. Shakhtar, playing their home matches in Poland and having seen most of their foreign players leave due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, had stunned Leipzig 4-1 in their Group F opener.

But the Bundesliga side were too strong after Christopher Nkunku's early strike left Shakhtar with a mountain to climb. Andre Silva and Dominik Szoboszlai netted in the second period and Dani Olmo's shot was deflected into his own net by Valeriy Bondar to wrap up a 4-0 win. "I'm really proud of the team. We didn't start well in this Champions League campaign, but we put in a solid performance today and are really happy to be through," Leipzig forward Emil Forsberg told DAZN.

Holders Real Madrid secured first place in the group by hammering Scottish champions Celtic 5-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu. Luka Modric and Rodrygo both scored penalties awarded for handball in the opening stages, before Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois saved Josip Juranovic's spot-kick. Second-half goals from Marco Asensio, Vinicius Junior and Fede Valverde completed the rout despite Jota's late consolation for Celtic who finished bottom. Karim Benzema also made his return from injury as a substitute to complete a good night for Carlo Ancelotti's men.

- Benfica snatch first from PSG -

PSG lost top spot in Group H despite Nuno Mendes' 69th-minute winner in Turin as Benfica scored five goals in the second half at Maccabi. Kylian Mbappe's brilliant individual effort put PSG in front, before Leonardo Bonucci dragged the already-eliminated Juventus level. Mendes scored only a minute after coming off the bench, but late drama in Israel saw PSG slip to second. Possible last-16 opponents for the Qatari-owned club include 14-time champions Real Madrid, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Chelsea and in-form Napoli.

"It doesn't matter, we qualified... We'll watch the draw and we'll play to win," Mbappe told RMC Sport. Three goals in 14 minutes in the second half gave Benfica hope of matching PSG's goal difference and pipping them on away goals. It appeared as though the Portuguese would come up two short, but Henrique Araujo scored in the 88th minute and Joao Mario struck in injury time to complete the job. "As the game progressed, we saw that it was within our reach," Goncalo Ramos, who scored Benfica's third goal, told Eleven Sports.

Juventus will drop into the Europa League after finishing third despite losing five of their six group matches. Manchester City came from behind to round off their Group G campaign with a 3-1 win over Sevilla at the Etihad. Rafa Mir gave the Spaniards the lead, but 17-year-old full-back Rico Lewis fired City level. Julian Alvarez and Riyad Mahrez sealed all three points for Pep Guardiola's Premier League champions, who were still without the injured Erling Haaland. Borussia Dortmund were held to a 1-1 draw by FC Copenhagen.

Qatar authorities said Wednesday they have seized 144 counterfeit World Cup trophies, the latest raid on fakes hitting the market ahead of the football tournament that starts later this month.

The interior ministry said officers launched an operation "acting on a piece of information about a website that promotes the sale of cups that mimic the true shape of the World Cup."

It released a photo showing the 144 life-sized trophies laid out across a floor and stated that "further legal procedures will be followed".

The ministry did not say where the trophies were found, nor whether suspects had been detained.

Fake World Cup trophies seized in Qatar

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg scored a 95th-minute winner as Tottenham Hotspur came from behind to beat Marseille 2-1 and reach the Champions League knockout stage on Tuesday, where they were joined by Eintracht Frankfurt after their victory at Sporting Lisbon.

Liverpool ended Napoli's unbeaten start to the season with a 2-0 success at Anfield, but the Italian club did enough to finish top of Group A. Atletico Madrid crashed out of Europe altogether with a loss to Porto, while Bayern Munich made it six wins from six matches by beating Inter Milan.

At a raucous Velodrome, Tottenham knew they would progress if they could avoid defeat by Marseille, although manager Antonio Conte had to watch from the stands after being red-carded in last week's dramatic draw with Sporting.

Spurs were camped inside their own half for the majority of the first period and fell behind just before the break when Chancel Mbemba headed in Jordan Veretout's cross after a quickly-taken corner.

The Premier League side were much improved after the restart and Clement Lenglet glanced in a 54th-minute equaliser.

Former Arsenal left-back Sead Kolasinac nodded a glorious late opportunity to send Marseille through wide. He was made to pay as Hojbjerg struck on the counter as Spurs snatched top spot in the group and denied Marseille the consolation of a Europa League place.

"I just spoke with Antonio. He's tired because to watch from the crowd is not normal," Tottenham assistant coach Cristian Stellini told BT Sport. "He wasted a lot of energy."

That Hojbjerg goal pushed Eintracht, who also won 2-1, down into second in Group D and kept Sporting in European competition. Like Tottenham, Sporting only needed a point to qualify and they forged ahead six minutes before half-time as Arthur Gomes volleyed home at the back post.

But Frankfurt, playing in the competition for the first time since losing the 1960 European Cup final to Real Madrid, did not give up and Daichi Kamada scored a 62nd-minute penalty awarded for handball.

Randal Kolo Muani provided the winning moment, latching onto Ansgar Knauff's hooked pass and hammering the ball into the far corner. The players celebrated wildly on the pitch after the Europa League holders' latest European exploit, with Sporting coach Ruben Amorim left looking stunned on the touchline.

"We didn't start well at the beginning of the game," said Frankfurt midfielder Sebastian Rode.

"But we are a comeback team, we gave everything in the second half and deservedly make the next round."

Liverpool brought an end to Napoli's 21-game unbeaten run but could not win by four goals to take first place. Both teams were already assured of a knockout-phase berth.

Liverpool put Saturday's surprise Premier League home loss to Leeds behind them, as late goals from Mohamed Salah, scoring in a fifth straight Champions League game, and Darwin Nunez gained a measure of revenge for the 4-1 loss in Naples in September.

"I would have really enjoyed the game even without the goals," Reds manager Jurgen Klopp said.

"We showed tonight a reaction. Being compact makes all the difference."

Ajax saw off Rangers 3-1 at Ibrox to inflict a sixth straight defeat in Group A on the Scottish giants.

Earlier, Atletico failed to finish third in Group B and drop into the Europa League as a 2-1 loss at Porto saw Bayer Leverkusen take third thanks to their goalless draw at Club Brugge.

Atletico, the 2014 and 2016 runners-up, were beaten by early goals from Mehdi Taremi and Stephen Eustaquio despite Ivan Marcano's stoppage-time own goal.

Bayern finished with a 100-percent record by seeing off Inter 2-0 at the Allianz Arena in Group C. Benjamin Pavard headed home a corner and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting crashed in his seventh goal in six games.

Tennis trailblazer Billie Jean King has spent her life fighting for gender equality and championing the rights of the LGBTQ community so it would hardly be surprising if she joined the long list of those criticising Qatar as World Cup hosts.

The American, however, believes staging soccer's blue-riband tournament in the conservative Gulf Arab state can open minds and become a power for good. Qatar's treatment of migrant workers and restrictive social laws which prohibit same-sex relationships has led many to question world governing body FIFA's decision.

But King, who in 2009 was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her advocacy work on behalf of women and the LGBTQ community, points the fact that the WTA Tour she helped create used to stage its end-of-season tournament in Doha. Asked if she would be happy to host the Billie Jean Cup finals, which begins this month in Glasgow, in Qatar, she said: "I probably would be because, first of all, the WTA went there years ago.

"I get a lot of different people coming to me saying 'why would you play there the way they treat women?' "But personally I think it's important to show up and be an influencer. I think it's delicate, no question. But I think it's important to go if you get the opportunity and everything else fits too, not just go there for money or whatever."

Qatar’s government has said its labour system is a work in progress, but denied a 2021 Amnesty report that thousands of migrant workers were still being exploited. Organisers of the World Cup, which starts on Nov. 20, say that everyone, no matter their sexual orientation or background, is welcome.

The football with which Diego Maradona scored his infamous 'Hand of God' goal in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final, knocking England out of the championship, is on display in the UK ahead of a World Cup-themed auction on November 16.

A different sort of football from ivory coast, it's called Maracana. The name's inspiration comes straight from Brazil where, in 1973, 20 Ivorian students were given the chance to spend a month's football pilgrimage by their then-president. Football was already played on small pitches throughout ivory coast, but the Maracana version codifies the rules "With an Ivorian flavour".

Some pub owners in Germany will not be showing matches of the upcoming Qatar World Cup, saying they took the decision from "an ethical standpoint" given the Gulf state's record on human rights.

Qatar, the first Middle Eastern country to host the World Cup, has come under intense international pressure for its treatment of foreign workers and restrictive social laws. Disquiet over the country's human rights record has led to calls for teams and officials to boycott the games at the Nov. 20-Dec. 18 tournaments.

"Too many human rights were violated and from an ethical standpoint, I can't justify it," Fanny Delaune, owner of "Babel" sports bar in Bonn, told Reuters. "Some understand it and others will watch anyway but ultimately, it's my bar and my decision."

Tobias Epping, who owns "Die Wache" bar, will also do the same. "Not just me but also my regular customers who I asked to vote on Facebook and Instagram decided not to show the World Cup because there was a point when we said 'enough'," he said.

"The number of workers killed went beyond 15,000, stadiums are air conditioned during times like these and you can't even drink a beer which for me as a bar owner obviously is a part of it: no. We can no longer support that. "From an economic point of view: was this a smart decision? Probably not. But at least you can go to a bar with a clean conscience..."

A Guardian newspaper analysis in Feb. 2021 concluded 6,500 South Asian migrants had died in Qatar since 2010 and the International Labour Organisation has said Qatar is not adequately reporting worker deaths. Qatar's World Cup organisers, the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy (SC), have disputed claims that thousands of people have died during the preparations for the tournament.

Qatar’s government has said its labour system is a work in progress, but denied a 2021 Amnesty report that thousands of migrant workers were still being exploited. A female fan, who did not share her name, said she would support the boycott by the bars.

"Even if Qatar had great stadiums and fantastically paid workers, in any case a World Cup during the winter is stupid," she said. "But in this case, it's totally unacceptable. I don't feel like watching and I fully support a boycott. I won't be watching."

The SC, which has promised a carbon neutral World Cup, says the stadium cooling systems require about a fifth of the energy typical to cool spaces of the same size, such as airport terminals or closed baseball fields. The World Cup will be held in late autumn, when Qatar’s summer heat has subsided and temperatures usually fall to mid-20 degrees Celsius (75 Fahrenheit).

Qatar 2022: Pub owners in Germany to boycott telecast of World Cup games

The trial of Brazilian superstar Neymar over his transfer to Barcelona in 2013 was due to wrap up Monday just days after a major U-turn by Spanish prosecutors who dropped all fraud charges against the player.

Despite Friday's bombshell by prosecutors, the case did not collapse because the Barcelona court is also considering a lawsuit filed by Brazilian sports investment firm DIS claiming it had been defrauded during this transfer.

The trial is the culmination of a years-long legal saga over his 2013 transfer from the Brazilian club Santos, with Neymar one of nine defendants in the dock on corruption-related charges, among them his parents and their N&N company, which manages his affairs.

Investigators began probing the transfer after a 2015 complaint filed by DIS, which owned 40 percent of the player's sporting rights when he was at Santos. It claims Neymar, Barcelona and the Brazilian club colluded to mask the true cost of his transfer thereby defrauding it of its legitimate financial interests.

Both Neymar and his parents, along with the rest of the defendants, will be given the chance to address the court by videoconference before the end of the day.

Spanish prosecutors had been seeking a two-year prison term and a fine of 10 million euros ($9.9 million) for the 30-year-old, who now plays for Paris Saint-Germain and will in three weeks lead Brazil into the Qatar World Cup.

But in a dramatic turn of events on Friday, the state prosecutor said it was dropping all criminal charges against the defendants on grounds there was not enough evidence to show a crime had been committed.

Prosecutors had pushed ahead with the case after concurring with allegations by Brazilian sports investment firm DIS that it had been defrauded during this transfer. They later said the allegations were not based on evidence but on "assumptions", concluding it was a matter for civil rather than criminal justice.

Although the trial phase draws to a close on Monday, the courts final ruling is not expected for weeks. In 2015, DIS filed a complaint in Spain against Neymar, Barcelona and Santos alleging fraud and seeking to recover 35 million euros.

Barca said the transfer cost 57.1 million euros, with 40 million euros paid to N&N, Neymar's parents' company, and 17.1 million to Santos, of which 6.8 million was given to DIS.

Spanish prosecutors initially said they believed the actual value was at least 83 million euros. Following Friday's bombshell, DIS strongly disputed the prosecution's stance that no crime had been committed.

"We cannot agree with that," its lawyer Eliseo Martinez said. "If that were the case, this trial would never have started."

However, the company has eased its stance somewhat, asking that the footballer face only two-and-a-half years behind bars if found guilty, instead of five.

Neymar's lawyers will ask that the court order DIS to pay all the legal costs on grounds of acting with "recklessness" and "in bad faith", sources close to his legal team said.

On the second day of the trial, which began on October 17, Neymar said he didn't remember if he took part in the transfer negotiations, saying he only signed documents presented to him by his father. All of the other defendants, including former Barca presidents Josep Maria Bartomeu and Sandro Rosell, also deny any wrongdoing.

Neymar corruption trial wraps up after Spain prosecutors drop charges

Unpaid wages dominate a growing number of complaints by migrant workers in Qatar, the UN labour agency said Tuesday, 19 days from the start of the football World Cup.

The International Labour Organization said the number of worker complaints more than doubled in a year to 34,425 with the launch of a new online platform, in a report which called on Qatar to bolster the implementation of reforms launched after criticism of its rights record.

"The main causes of complaints concerned non-payment of wages and end-of service benefits, and annual leave not being granted or paid," said the ILO report which added that 10,500 cases went to labour tribunals where nearly all judges ruled in favour of workers.

The report said the number of workers treated for heat-related problems linked to the Gulf state's searing summer temperatures had also fallen after the introduction of new restrictions in 2021. It said four clinics for migrant workers treated 351 workers this summer, down from 620 in 2021 and 1,520 in 2020.

Qatar, where the World Cup starts on November 20, has been widely criticised over conditions for migrant workers -- as well as rights for women and the LGBTQ community.

The ILO said Qatar has carried out "significant" reforms that have "improved the working and living conditions for hundreds of thousands of workers" and were having an impact across the Gulf region.

"There is universal acknowledgement that more needs to be done to fully apply and enforce the labour reforms," said the report.

"We all recognise that we are not yet at the finish line, and we will build on this solid foundation to address the gaps in implementation, and ensure that all workers and employers can fully benefit from these major reforms," said Ruba Jaradat, ILO regional director for Arab states.

The report came out as Germany's Interior Minister Nancy Faeser met Qatari government leaders in Doha after her comments on the tiny energy-rich state caused a diplomatic storm. Qatar, which has become increasingly frustrated over the criticism, summoned the German ambassador after Faeser said Qatar's hosting of the World Cup was "very tricky" for Germany.

Faeser and Germany's football federation chief Bernd Neuendorf met ILO officials and union representatives on Monday.

Rights groups have continued to put a fierce spotlight on Qatar's record, accusing the government of under-reporting the number of deaths on mega construction projects linked to the World Cup and demanding FIFA set up a compensation fund for migrant workers.

The ILO said, in a report issued in 2021, that 50 workers had died on construction projects in 2020.

It has not updated these figures, but its report said "substantial efforts" have been made in "labour migration governance, the enforcement of the labour law and access to justice, and strengthening the voice of workers and social dialogue."

It said more than 300,000 workers had been able to change jobs after the partial dismantling of the "Kafala" labour system that previously meant a worker could not change posts or even leave the country without permission from their employer.

But it added: "There is a universal recognition that the work is not complete. This is not surprising given their (reforms) magnitude. It takes time to build institutions and change deep-rooted practices."

The ILO established a temporary office in Doha after international unions made an official complaint about Qatar in 2014. It said that Qatar has now requested that the office become permanent -- which would be its first full office in a region where labour standards are regularly criticised.

Also Read: France's Paul Pogba to miss World Cup after failing to recover from surgery The ILO said Qatar has carried out "significant" reforms that have "improved the working and living conditions for hundreds of thousands of workers" and were having an impact across the Gulf region. Also Read: Neymar corruption trial wraps up after Spain prosecutors drop charges The ILO said, in a report issued in 2021, that 50 workers had died on construction projects in 2020. It has not updated these figures, but its report said "substantial efforts" have been made in "labour migration governance, the enforcement of the labour law and access to justice, and strengthening the voice of workers and social dialogue." It said more than 300,000 workers had been able to change jobs after the partial dismantling of the "Kafala" labour system that previously meant a worker could not change posts or even leave the country without permission from their employer. But it added: "There is a universal recognition that the work is not complete. This is not surprising given their (reforms) magnitude. It takes time to build institutions and change deep-rooted practices." The ILO established a temporary office in Doha after international unions made an official complaint about Qatar in 2014. It said that Qatar has now requested that the office become permanent -- which would be its first full office in a region where labour standards are regularly criticised.

France midfielder Paul Pogba will miss their World Cup title defence after failing to recover from knee surgery in time for next month's tournament in Qatar, his agent said on Monday.

Pogba had an operation on a damaged meniscus in September but his agent said that, following a medical review, he would not be able to return to the Juventus squad or join up with France before the Nov. 20-Dec. 18 World Cup.

"Following yesterday and today's medical review in Torino and Pittsburgh, it is extremely painful to inform (you that) Paul Pogba will still need recovery time from his surgery," his agent Rafaela Pimenta said.

"For this reason, Paul will not be able to join the Juventus squad before the World Cup break nor the French national team in Qatar. If wishful thinking would change things, Paul would be playing tomorrow."

Liverpool suffered a surprise 2-1 loss to Leeds United after Dutch winger Crysencio Summerville's 89th-minute strike in their Premier League clash at Anfield on Saturday that took the visitors out of the relegation zone.

The Reds' first top-flight home defeat in 30 games follows last week's loss at bottom side Nottingham Forest and further deepens the crisis around the struggling Merseyside club, who are ninth in the table on 16 points after 12 games.

The win takes Leeds up to 15th on 12 points.

Liverpool got off to another disastrous start after four minutes when Joe Gomez played a blind backpass to Alisson who had moved out of his goal and slipped, leaving a gaping space for Rodrigo to run in and tap the ball into the empty net.

Mohamed Salah levelled for Liverpool 10 minutes later when Andy Robertson crossed for the Egyptian international to hook a volley into the net from close range, igniting the Liverpool supporters as their team began the chase for a winner.

Leeds continued to threaten on the break, though, and Brenden Aaronson almost put them back in front a few minutes later, meeting Rasmus Kristensen's cross from the right with a deft volley that cannoned off the crossbar.

Leeds French keeper Illan Meslier kept his side in the game almost single-handedly in the second half, pulling off a superb save from Darwin Nunez in a one-on-one after 67 minutes and then clawing away a shot from the same player 11 minutes later.

Meslier's saves set the scene for Summerville to steal the three points with a last-gasp poacher's finish.

On the eve of his 21st birthday, the forward snapped up a ball in the box from Patrick Bamford and quickly pulled the trigger, firing across Alisson into the net.

It was Leeds' first away win of the season and a first league loss for Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk at Anfield since he signed for Liverpool in January 2018.

"It's a huge moment for me and my family," Summerville told Sky Sports. "Scoring at Anfield is a big moment for me. It went so quick ... when you're in the box, you have to think quickly. It just happened."

Liverpool boss Juergen Klopp is in no doubt about what he expects of his under-performing side. "We have to fight and that is what we must do," he said.

Manchester United's Brazil winger Antony vowed to continue with his tricks after accusations he was "showboating" during his side's 3-0 win over Sheriff Tiraspol on Thursday.

The 22-year-old who is well-known for his flair produced one incredible 720-degree spin with the ball seemingly glued to his left foot during the Europa League tie.

United manager Erik ten Hag said he would "correct" the player if his tricks were "not functional" but in a post on Instagram on Friday, Antony said he would continue to dazzle.

"We're known for our art and I'm not going to stop doing what got me where I am," Antony, who features in numerous showboating reels on social media, said.

Antony's next touch following his fancy footwork was to knock the ball out of play and Ten Hag suggested that his player needed to concentrate more on the basics.

"I don't have a problem with tricks as long as it's functional," said the Dutchman, who also managed Antony at Ajax Amsterdam.

"I demand more from him -- more runs behind, more often in the box and more playing in the pocket.

"When there is a trick like that, it's nice as long as it's functional. If you're not losing the ball, then it's OK -- but if it's a trick because of a trick, then I will correct him."

A stunning free kick from Kevin De Bruyne earned Manchester City a 1-0 victory at Leicester City on Saturday, a win that moved the champions back to the top of the Premier League.

With top goalscorer Erling Haaland missing a Premier League game for the first time since arriving at City through injury, the visitors lacked a cutting edge in the first half, with Leicester containing them with ease.

It was clear it would take something special to unlock the determined hosts, with Belgian midfielder De Bruyne stepping up, firing an unstoppable free-kick into the net four minutes after the break to put City in front.

Leicester responded well and has a chance to level through a stunning volley from De Bruyne's Belgium teammate Youri Tielemans, but City goalkeeper Ederson brilliantly tipped the thunderbolt of a strike onto the crossbar.

The hosts kept coming, putting City under plenty of late pressure, but the champions held on to climb back to the top of the standings on 29 points, one clear of Arsenal who play Nottingham Forest on Sunday. Leicester stay 17th.

"The free kick goes perfectly, luckily it's 1-0," De Bruyne told BT Sport. "Ederson has been great, sometimes we only talk about his distribution but he's a great keeper and he proves it every week.

"We have proved we can win with or without Erling Haaland."

Leicester coach Brendan Rodgers could not hide his delight that Haaland, who has 17 league goals from just 11 starts this season, was missing.

"I'd be lying if I said I wasn't sliding on my knees when I heard he (Haaland) wasn't playing," he said pre-match, before seeing his side keep City at bay in the opening period.

The hosts came into the contest on the back of three successive clean sheets, and restricted City to half chances early on. With Bernardo Silva's angled shot well saved, it was the champions' only real opening of note before the break.

There was absolutely nothing anyone could have done to keep De Bruyne's third league goal of the season out, however, as he curled an unstoppable free-kick into the top corner.

"It's not about the assist that Kevin always has, or the free kick. I know he has these qualities, the last few games he was not himself," City boss Pep Guardiola said.

"He needs his dynamic, when he can move in different pockets. What can I say about Kevin? Everyone knows him."

City were comfortable in their lead and never looked in danger of suffering a second league loss of the season.

City have now kept a clean sheet in six of their 12 games this season, which is better than all other Premier League teams.

"There were times where you felt like you didn't touch the ball for 10 minutes but that's what it's like when you play against one of the best teams in the world," Leicester's James Maddison told BT Sport.

Premier League: Kevin De Bruyne fires Manchester City to win at Leicester in Erling Haaland's absence

Qatar has emptied apartment blocks housing thousands of foreign workers in the same areas in the centre of the capital Doha where visiting soccer fans will stay during the World Cup, workers who were evicted from their homes told Reuters.

They said more than a dozen buildings had been evacuated and shut down by authorities, forcing the mainly Asian and African workers to seek what shelter they could - including bedding down on the pavement outside one of their former homes.

The move comes less than four weeks before the Nov. 20 start of the global soccer tournament which has drawn intense international scrutiny of Qatar's treatment of foreign workers and its restrictive social laws.

At one building which residents said housed 1,200 people in Doha's Al Mansoura district, authorities told people at about 8 pm on Wednesday they had just two hours to leave.

Municipal officials returned around 10.30 pm, forced everyone out and locked the doors to the building, they said. Some men had not been able to return in time to collect their belongings.

"We don't have anywhere to go," one man told Reuters the next day as he prepared to sleep out for a second night with around 10 other men, some of them shirtless in the autumn heat and humidity of the Gulf Arab state.

He, and most other workers who spoke to Reuters, declined to give their names or personal details for fear of reprisals from the authorities or employers.

Nearby, five men were loading a mattress and a small fridge into the back of a pickup truck. They said they had found a room in Sumaysimah, about 40 km (25 miles) north of Doha.

A Qatari government official said the evictions are unrelated to the World Cup and were designed "in line with ongoing comprehensive and long-term plans to re-organise areas of Doha."

"All have since been rehoused in safe and appropriate accommodation," the official said, adding that requests to vacate "would have been conducted with proper notice."

World soccer's governing body FIFA did not respond to a request for comment and Qatar's World Cup organisers directed inquiries to the government.

Around 85% of Qatar's three million population are foreign workers. Many of those evicted work as drivers, day labourers or have contracts with companies but are responsible for their own accommodation - unlike those working for major construction firms who live in camps housing tens of thousands of people.

One worker said the evictions targeted single men, while foreign workers with families were unaffected.

A Reuters reporter saw more than a dozen buildings where residents said people had been evicted. Some buildings had their electricity switched off.

Most were in neighbourhoods where the government has rented buildings for World Cup fan accommodation. The organisers' website lists buildings in Al Mansoura and other districts where flats are advertised for between $240 and $426 per night.

The Qatari official said municipal authorities have been enforcing a 2010 Qatari law which prohibits "workers' camps within family residential areas" - a designation encompassing most of central Doha - and gives them the power to move people out.

Some of the evicted workers said they hoped to find places to live amid purpose-built workers' accommodation in and around the industrial zone on Doha's southwestern outskirts or in outlying cities, a long commute from their jobs.

The evictions "keep Qatar's glitzy and wealthy facade in place without publicly acknowledging the cheap labour that makes it possible," said Vani Saraswathi, Director of Projects at Migrant-Rights.org, which campaigns for foreign workers in the Middle East.

"This is deliberate ghetto-isation at the best of times. But evictions with barely any notice are inhumane beyond comprehension."

Some workers said they had experienced serial evictions. One said he was forced to change buildings in Al Mansoura at the end of September, only to be moved on 11 days later with no prior notice, along with some 400 others. "In one minute, we had to move," he said.

Mohammed, a driver from Bangladesh, said he had lived in the same neighbourhood for 14 years until Wednesday, when the municipality told him he had 48 hours to leave the villa he shared with 38 other people.

He said labourers who built up the infrastructure for Qatar to host the World Cup were being pushed aside as the tournament approaches.

"Who made the stadiums? Who made the roads? Who made everything? Bengalis, Pakistanis. People like us. Now they are making us all go outside."

Also Read: From Erling Haaland to Luis Diaz: Superstar footballers who won't be seen in FIFA World Cup in Qatar A Qatari government official said the evictions are unrelated to the World Cup and were designed "in line with ongoing comprehensive and long-term plans to re-organise areas of Doha." "All have since been rehoused in safe and appropriate accommodation," the official said, adding that requests to vacate "would have been conducted with proper notice." World soccer's governing body FIFA did not respond to a request for comment and Qatar's World Cup organisers directed inquiries to the government. But evictions with barely any notice are inhumane beyond comprehension." Also Read: 'We are not going to stop': Manchester United winger Antony responds to criticism over showboating Some workers said they had experienced serial evictions.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored on his first Manchester United appearance since his refusal to come on as a substitute last week in a 3-0 win over Sheriff Tiraspol in the Europa League on Thursday. The victory, with goals from Diogo Dalot and Marcus Rashford adding to Ronaldo's strike, guaranteed the Red Devils a place in the next round, where they will join Barcelona who were knocked out of the Champions League at the group stage 24 hours earlier.

United manager Erik ten Hag left Portugal forward out of the United squad for Saturday's draw at Chelsea and he was only allowed to return to first-team training this week. "Seeing Ronaldo get his goal was great," Dutchman ten Hag told BT Sport. "He created, the team created for him and we know he has the capability to finish. "He needed a goal and now I'm confident there will be more goals," he added.

Ronaldo, 37, started up front with 18-year-old Argentinian winger Alejandro Garnacho, who was making his maiden senior start. Right-back Dalot opened the scoring just before the break before Rashford doubled the lead with 25 minutes to play.

Ronaldo claimed his 701st club career goal and made sure of the three points with nine minutes left. Arsenal, who have already reached the last 16, lost for the first time in the group stage as they went down to a 2-0 defeat at PSV Eindhoven. Gunners coach Mikel Arteta said afterwards that defender Pablo Mari, on loan at Italian club Monza, was having medical treatment after being stabbed in a Milan shopping centre in an attack which killed one person and injured three others.

World Cup host Qatar has scrapped a requirement for visitors to obtain a negative COVID-19 test before departing for the Gulf Arab state, its health ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

Previously, Qatar had told fans attending the World Cup they must show proof of a negative COVID-19 test regardless of their vaccination status, before departing by air or at the border crossing.

Qatar is expecting an unprecedented 1.2 million visitors during the Nov. 20 to Dec. 18 tournament. Qatar residents are no longer to take a COVID-19 test within 24 hours of returning to the country from abroad.

The health ministry also dropped a requirement that adults show their COVID-19 status on a government-run contact tracing smartphone application called Ehteraz before entering stadiums or other establishments like shops and restaurants.

Visitors and residents must still show the application before entering a healthcare facility, the statement said.

Qatar is easing restrictions because "the number of COVID-19 cases (is) continuing to drop around the world and in Qatar, and the ongoing roll-out of Qatar's National COVID-19 Vaccination Program," the statement said.

Goals by Sadio Mane, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Benjamin Pavard earned Bayern Munich a 3-0 win at already-eliminated Barcelona on Wednesday as the German giants clinched a spot in the Champions League round of 16 as group winners.

Bayern top Group C on 15 points, five ahead of Inter Milan who also reached the knockout stage after a 4-0 win against Viktoria Plzen earlier on Wednesday, a result that eliminated Barcelona in the group stage for the second year in a row. With Barcelona having nothing riding on their game, it did not take long for Bayern to open the scoring through Mane 10 minutes into the first half after receiving a brilliant long pass from Serge Gnabry.

Mane beat Spanish defender Hector Bellerin in a 50-metre race and scored with a tidy finish. Bayern doubled their lead in similar fashion 21 minutes later, catching the Barca defence sleeping and out of position.

Joshua Kimmich passed to Gnabry who, from the edge of the box, set up Choupo-Moting to score his sixth goal in the Champions League this season.

Barca thought they had a penalty after a clash between Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt and Polish striker Robert Lewandowski but the referee, after a VAR check, ruled that there had been no foul. Bayern took their foot off the gas after the break and had a Gnabry goal ruled out for offside in the 56th minute.

Pavard scored the third goal in the very last play of the game, with a close-range strike from a corner. "The way we won gives us a lot of energy. I don't think Barca were expecting us to be so bold. But you have to do that when you play against Barcelona," Bayern manager Julian Nagelsmann told DAZN.

"We scored two lovely goals and added a third at the end. We defended with so much passion. The team made a statement tonight."

Barcelona looked stale and went the full 90 minutes without a single strike on target. "We have to face our new reality, today we didn't even have the level to compete," Barca manager Xavi told Movistar Plus.

"I believe today the psychological side weighed on us, going into the game knowing that we were already out. "We started the season with very high expectations but ended up in a very complicated group and didn't manage to be at the necessary level to compete with them. It's a huge disappointment."

Since winning the Champions League title for the last time in 2015, Barca have reached the semi-finals only once, in 2019. They lost 8-2 to Bayern in the 2020 quarter-finals, were knocked out in the round of 16 by PSG in 2021, and failed to make it past the group stage in the last two editions.

Last year, Barca's exit at the group stage came after the departure of Lionel Messi to Paris St Germain and the financial crisis that led to the resignation of the entire club board.

This season, however, following the big-money signings of Lewandowski, Raphinha and Jules Kounde, a better outcome had been expected. They have won only one of their five games in the group so far and will go into the second-tier Europa League after ending up third in the group for the second year in a row.

Australia's national soccer team spoke out against World Cup host Qatar's record on human rights and same-sex relationships in a video released on Thursday, adding to criticism of the country in the weeks ahead of the tournament.

Qatar, the first Middle Eastern country to host the World Cup, has come under intense international pressure for its treatment of foreign workers and restrictive social laws. The video, featuring several players delivering a message line by line, cited harm to Qatar's more than 1.6 million migrant workers and the status of same-sex relationships, which are illegal in the conservative gulf state.

"We have learned that the decision to host the World Cup in Qatar has resulted in the suffering and the harm of countless of our fellow workers," midfielder Jackson Irvine said. "As players we fully support the rights of LGBTI+ people, but in Qatar people are not free to love the person that they choose," said fellow midfielder Denis Genreau.

Qatari ruler Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani on Tuesday said while some criticism was constructive, it also included fabrications and double standards. The Socceroos acknowledged reforms to date but called for more including a migrant resource centre, remedy for those denied rights and decriminalisation of all same-sex relationships.

A separate statement from Football Australia, the peak soccer body, on Thursday acknowledged reforms but said the games had been associated "with suffering for some migrant workers and their families." Disquiet over the country's human rights record has led to calls for teams and officials to boycott the games. The Dutch government confirmed last week it would send a delegation despite a parliamentary vote urging it not to.

Players expressed support for FIFPRO, a trade union for professional footballers, as well as worker groups the Building and Woodworkers International and the International Trade Union Confederation. Australia will play against France, Denmark and Tunisia after the World Cup kicks off on Nov. 20.

RB Leipzig took a big step towards the Champions League knockout stage with a 3-2 home win over an under-strength Real Madrid side thanks to goals from Josko Gvardiol, Christopher Nkunku and Timo Werner on Tuesday.

The German side are second in Group F on nine points, one behind leaders Real and three ahead of Shakhtar Donetsk, who they face in their final group game next week in need of a draw to guarantee a top-two spot.

With Real Madrid having already qualified for the last 16, manager Carlo Ancelotti rested several regular starters and his side were dominated early on by the young Leipzig team.

The home side took the lead 13 minutes into the game with Gvardiol scoring on the rebound from a Thibaut Courtois save after a bullet header by Andre Silva.

With the European champions still recovering from the first blow, Leipzig extended their advantage five minutes later when David Raum tried to pass into the box but the ball deflected off a defender into the path of Nkunku who was quick to react and rifled the ball in off the crossbar.

Leipzig had two more great chances but Courtois saved Amadou Haidara's strike from the edge of the box and Nkuku put a close-range shot wide after beating the onrushing Courtois to the ball but ending up with a tight angle trying to find the empty net.

"I think we came out very distracted in the beginning of the game and were caught sleeping against a team that is very aggressive," Real goalkeeper Courtois told Movistar Plus.

"Coach Ancelotti warned us before the game that they are a feisty team at home, very aggressive, but we still started slow and paid the price.

"It’s unacceptable our performance in the beginning of the match, we can’t concede two goals from corners in the start of the match."

However, what was a one-sided affair slowly became a ding-dong battle, with Real growing in strength and the hosts slowing down after their frantic but hard to maintain rhythm of the first minutes of the match.

Vinicius Jr got Real back into the game just before the break with a header that went just inside the left post. Real came back even stronger in a lively second-half, with the Spanish giants dominating possession and missing several chances albeit leaving themselves exposed to counter-attacks.

Leipzig coach Marco Rose saw the opportunity and made three substitutions to seize on the opportunity to counter. They missed three chances through Nkunku and Dani Olmo before substitute Werner struck from close range to finish a quick attack in the 81st minute and put Leipzig 3-1 up.

After being fouled, Rodrygo got up to convert a penalty for Real's second goal in added time butit was not enough to avoid their first loss in all competitions this season.

"We knew Madrid were strong on the ball and there would be phases where we were pushed back," said Werner. "Rose told us to be brave when in possession and that's what we did.

"We have achieved what we wanted. We have it in our own hands (to go through to the last 16) and don't even need to win against Shakhtar now."

RB Leipzig one step closer to last 16 after stunning 3-2 win over Real Madrid in Champions League

Barcelona will be eager to show everyone that they are better than rivals Bayern Munich when the two teams face off in the Champions League on Wednesday, manager Xavi Hernandez said.

Barcelona were beaten 2-0 by Bayern in last month's Group C fixture, a result that Xavi said was not a true reflection of the team's talent.

But having won only one of their four matches in Europe this season, Xavi wants his team to show their true worth at Camp Nou on Wednesday.

"We have to show ourselves that even if we are knocked out (of the Champions League) we are a good team and we can compete against the best teams out there," Xavi told a news conference on Tuesday.

"That game in Munich was a disgrace because we deserved much more. That was an accident because we lacked the final touch.

Even though Barcelona had more possession than Bayern and outshot them 18-13, the German side scored twice in four minutes against the run of play to secure the win.

Barca's indifferent form in the competition has left them in danger of being eliminated early in the competition as they are third in the standings with four points, eight points behind leaders Bayern and three behind second-placed Inter Milan with two group matches remaining.

Inter host bottom-placed Viktoria Plzen, who have yet to score a point, in the other group fixture on Wednesday.

If the Italians win, they would qualify for the last 16 and knock out Barca thanks to a better head-to-head record. Bayern have already secured their place in the next round.

"Regardless of what happens in Milan, we have to win. We have to play as if only our game matters, to show that we are better than Bayern," said Xavi.

"I don't like to talk about miracles... we have a small hope. Though we are in a very uncomfortable situation.

"The numbers are all against us. But ... unexpected things can happen."

Barcelona, who also exited the tournament following the group stage last season, suffered another setback when they were handed a 3-1 defeat by Real Madrid in this month's El Clasico.

Xavi said that he and his players will watch the Inter game together in the changing room, but refused to send a message to the Viktoria Plzen players ahead of the match.

"I already have too much in hand to start playing the coach of other teams," Xavi laughed.

"We have not been at the level that we wanted in some games. I have the feeling that we (at times we) had it in our hands and now it is not up to us. So we are facing this situation only because of our own mistakes."

Champions League: Barcelona out to prove they are better than Bayern Munich, says head coach Xavi

Cristiano Ronaldo was deservingly punished by Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag after he refused to come on as a substitute and left the stadium before the full-time whistle during the club's 2-0 win against Tottenham Hotspur last week. Ronaldo was widely criticised for his antics as the 37-year-old chose to let his frustrations known to the United boss.

Ronaldo had expressed his desire to leave United earlier this summer and was actively looking for a move away from the club throughout the transfer window. However, any move failed to materialise for the Portuguese superstar as none of the top clubs showcased any interest in securing his services.

He had to continue at United after missing the entire pre-season for the club and has since struggled to start games under new manager Ten Hag. While has been a regular feature for United in the Europa League, Ronaldo has not got many starts in the Premier League this season and has only one goal to his name.

He was named on the bench against Tottenham last week but refused to come on as a substitute a few minutes before the final whistle. He then stormed off the pitch and left the stadium before the game finished. Ten Hag took immediate action against Ronaldo and dropped him from the club's squad against Chelsea while also making him train separately.

However, Ronaldo returned to training with the first team at United's training base - Carrington on Tuesday. He is reportedly back in contention to return to the playing XI in United's clash against Moldovan side Sheriff at Old Trafford on Thursday.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola joked he wanted striker Erling Haaland to lay off the food and drink during the mid-season break for the World Cup and come back fit to spearhead the club's hunt for trophies in the second half of the season.

Norway's Haaland, who has scored 22 goals in 15 games across all competitions so far, will not be heading to Qatar for the November 20 to December 18 tournament after his country failed to qualify.

"He will be in Marbella or Norway. It depends on how he behaves in Marbella as to how good he is for the second half of the season," Guardiola told reporters on Monday (October 24). "He will play golf, hopefully not eat and drink much and come back fit.

"He is so smart. A part of that is his work ethic. He is one of the first to arrive and one of the last to leave. He looks after his body perfectly. He is well educated in the way he has to live as a professional and he has the intent to get better," Guardiola added.

Man City boss Pep Guardiola warns Erling Haaland to lay off the carbs during World Cup break

Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr believes that fans found guilty of racist abuse should be banned for life from attending games.

The 22-year-old Brazilian was a victim of abuse in September when Atletico Madrid fans were filmed directing racist chants at him outside their Wanda Metropolitano Stadium ahead of their game against Real.

"If you hurt other people, you must pay," Vinicius told Brazilian TV Globo on Sunday.

"It's hard to say that (racism in soccer) will end with so many people still doing it. But I like to believe that there are more good people than bad.

"All the racist people must pay in some way. If they like to watch soccer, so those Atletico Madrid fans should never be allowed to step foot in a stadium again.

"That will make them suffer the consequences and reflect about their actions."

Atletico and LaLiga condemned the abuse directed at Vinicius in the build-up to the Madrid derby, which Real won 2-1.

Local media also reported that monkey noises and chants of "Vinicius, die" were heard throughout the game.

Atletico said they are collaborating with authorities to identify the abusers who would be banned by the club.

The Prosecutor's Office of Madrid is also investigating the case.

Pele, Neymar and other leading Brazilian figures defended Vinicius that same week after a pundit on a Spanish soccer show said the Brazilian was not respecting his opponents with his celebrations, comparing his behaviour to a monkey.
