Rafael Nadal and World number 1 Novak Djokovic locked horns with each other in the quarter-finals of the 2022 French Open on Wednesday (June 01). The contest between the two legendary players have always been one to cherish for the ardent tennis fans. The same was the case this time around as Nadal beat defending champion Djokovic in a four-set riveting battle, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(4).

Nadal now stands just a couple of steps away from lifting his 14th French Open title after an incredible display against Djokovic. While many termed the Serbian as the favourite ahead of the clash, due to Nadal's foot injury and inconsistent form, the Spaniard saved his best versus the No. 1 ranked player to emerge on top in an engaging battle.

Following the clash, Indian Tennis coach Enrico Piperno analysed the high-voltage clash between Nadal-Djokovic and lauded the former world number one.

On Nadal's foot injury, Piperno said in an interaction with WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo, "The man is superhuman. Don't know how he does it. To continue playing that sort of level at this age is pretty phenomenal. That explains Rafael Nadal to you. The way he plays, the sort of effort that goes into it, hitting the ground stoke from that far from the baseline is just absolutely phenomenal. He is one of the greatest athletes the planet has ever seen."

Over the years, the sporting fraternity has been blessed with several marquee athletes from across the globe. Many sports have seen certain performers own the game they play. Many have had an illustrious career with many highs along with some steep falls. Nonetheless, some of them have also reinvented themselves to flourish at the latter stage of their respective careers.

One such athlete has been the 2004 Olympic 100m gold medalist Justin Gatlin. The American sprinter was a prominent name when Usain Bolt came up the ranks, scripted some glorious highs before doping led to his suspension only to stage a comeback in 2010 and continue long enough to beat the Jamaican in his final race. After continuing to produce age-defying performances, Gatlin finally retired earlier this year. However, he continues to be an inspiration for many.

In a chat with Wion's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo, ahead of the TCS World 10K Bengaluru, the 40-year-old Gatlin looked back on his career and has heaped praise on India's rising star Neeraj Chopra.

While Gatlin is an inspiration for many to date, he feels Neeraj is now inspiring a the younger generation. In his maiden Olympic outing, Neeraj returned with a gold medal in the men's javelin final to create history and take India past the final hurdle (where they have always struggled in marquee events).

Thus, Gatlin compared Neeraj's success with Usain and said, "What he has done for India, same thing that Usian has done for Jamaica. He has inspired so many young talents. They can say that I come from the same background, even I can reach there and make my country proud. Golden Boy has done a great thing for his country and I believe there are now many many more athletes who will come out from India."

Given that such huge words of praise from a legendary name like Gatlin, it will do wonders for Neeraj's confidence going ahead.

Lalit Yadav became a part of the Delhi Capitals (DC) since IPL 2020. While last year, he featured in almost half of the games for the Rishabh Pant-led Delhi camp, the all-rounder has been a regular in the DC playing XI in IPL 2022.

The 25-year-old Lalit has also chipped in with handy contributions with both bat and ball. With the willow, he has had a few starts and was one of the main protagonists in DC's four-wicket win over Mumbai Indians (MI) in their IPL 15 season-opener. At present, he averages at over 25 and has also scalped four wickets. Overall, he has an economy rate of 7.90.

As the Delhi cricketer is learning the ropes in the star-studded DC franchise, Lalit interacted with WION's Aditya Sahay and dwelled on several aspects of his game, such as working closely with DC head coach Ricky Ponting, assistant coach Shane Watson, captain Rishabh Pant. DC have trusted you a lot over the years. How has it been working with Ricky Ponting and being led by a youngster like Rishabh Pant?

The coach and captain trust me a lot. This helps in one's growth and there is no room for any self-doubt. So, the individual only thinks about his abilities and goes out to perform freely. When a youngster comes into a team, he, or she, always wants to make a mark and impress the captain coach. But if they back and trust your abilities, your work is done. You then tend to enjoy the process.

You've been a handy batter at the top or middle order and can also bowl a few vital overs when required. Where do you think Delhi relies on you the most? Talk about your role within the team...

It's not like Delhi depends or relies on me in one particular department. I want to contribute in any way possible and in every department. Be it batting, bowling, or fielding. The team management has trusted me in different situations and in varied roles. That is a big confidence booster in itself. I've bowled in powerplays or slog overs. If early wickets have fallen, I often get promoted or sometimes also play the role of a slogger. Overall, whenever and wherever the team needs me, I am there (smiles).

You've been inspired by Virender Sehwag a lot. What is the one specific aspect that you want to learn after seeing his game?

It's not that I want to replicate something from Virender Sehwag. However, I'm a big fan of his. Hope I can also learn to hit the big shots so nonchalantly against the spinners and even pacers as he did.

From whatever you've seen and observed in MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, what is that one quality that you will pick from the trio and add to your game?

Virat Kohli's aggression and energy, MS Dhoni's match-finishing skills and calmness and Rohit Sharma's effortless stroke-making...He hits them with ease and at will. So, I'll want to take all these qualities and add to my game.

How has Shane Watson helped you in your batting? Do you talk with him about the different requirements of batting at different positions? Tell us about your interactions with the Aussie...

Shane Watson is a legend of the game. With him, he often shares incidents and stories from his playing days -- how he used to approach different situations and how his thought process was during his good and bad days. This is a sport. We all will have more bad days than good ones. So, all these things. Also, he emphasises and talks about the mental aspect of the game.

Indian sport has seen many highs over the last two decades but just two men have been able to achieve the holy grail of sport, an Olympic Gold Medal. Abhinav Bindra shattered the cynicism around India's Olympic hopefuls by bagging the 10m Air Rifle Gold at the 2008 Games in Beijing. Neeraj Chopra joined India's most exclusive club by hurling the Javelin to a distance of 88.58m at the Tokyo Olympics. WION Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo caught up with both champions on the sidelines of the Sportstar Aces Awards in Mumbai where Chopra won in the Sportstar of the year (Male) category

Joint interaction with India's only two individual Olympic Champions Abhinav Bindra & Neeraj Chopra

India had to wait for long before veteran shooter Abhinav Bindra became the first individual from the country to win gold in the 10m Air Rifle in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Bindra made heads turn worldwide and soon became the darling of the nation.

However, the wait for India's second gold in the individual event continued from thereon. Neeraj Chopra finally ended the drought with his sensational performance in his maiden Olympic appearance during last year's Tokyo 2020 as the 23-year-old javelin thrower returned with an elusive gold in the men's javelin final in Tokyo, Japan. With a record throw of 87.58m, in his second attempt at Tokyo Games, Neeraj became the poster boy of Indian sports and his popularity continues to grow with each passing day.

Neeraj added another feather to his illustrious hat as he won the Sportstar of the year (male) in the recently-held Sportstar Aces Award. Getting a chance to talk to India's two Olympic champions Neeraj and Abhinav, WION Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo asked Neeraj how the veteran shooter has been an inspiration for him over the years. In addition, he revealed how both had a similar approach to the Olympics.

Thus, Neeraj said, "I believe if you chase a medal or trophy, you will only add pressure on yourself. The result is not in our hands, but we can always try to give our best. I was discussing with Abhinav on our flight to Mumbai, that there is an obsession towards practice and training. It is common between us. He was speaking on the sidelines of the in-person opening of Korean Cultural Centre India in Delhi as the covid crisis abates. The centre promotes Korean culture, with classes on Samulnori, K-Pop, Korean language, and Taekwondo. Asked about the popularity of K pop becoming a cultural phenomenon globally, he said, "I hope that it will go further."

WION: Korean Cultural Centre India has been reopened; how does it help propagate Korean Culture in India? And does it mean that the worries about Covid are over?

Chang Jae-bok: Our culture centre in India has been trying to have activities online, now it is getting back to normal work. We cannot get back to exactly the same situation as before the covid pandemic, however, we are getting back to normal little by little.

This is a great effort by Korean Cultural Centre India. Our embassy together with the cultural centre hopes that the Korean culture and language will go along with the Indian people, especially Indian young people who appreciate Korean pop culture.

WION: South Korea has emerged as a major superpower when it comes to its culture. K-pop is very popular. How has South Korea emerged as this major superpower on this front?

Chang Jae-bok: I think it's part of the creativity of Korean artists and people. The Korean government supports these activities for K-pop, but it does not interfere with private or commercial businesses engaged in cultural entertainment. I think that is the key to the success of Korean pop culture in the world.

WION: How popular is K-pop in India? You must have noticed its popularity.

Chang Jae-bok: I felt its popularity among young people. I don't think it started a long time ago. Especially during the pandemic, Indian people started to get into the OTT, online platforms. I hope that it will go further.

Exclusive | 'Understand India's position', South Korean envoy Chang on Ukraine crisis

In India, cricket remains the top priority among sports lovers but many other sports have grown in stature and continue to rise with each passing year (such as badminton, kabaddi, hockey, football, etc.) To date, golf is keenly followed across the world but in India, it is looked at as a niche sport. But Anirban Lahiri gave Indian golf a much-needed boost with his recent superlative performance as he finished runners-up in the Players Championship on Monday (March 14).

Anirban played his heart out but lost the top spot to Australia's Cameron Smith as he settled for the runners-up spot. After the impressive performance, he recently interacted with WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo as he spoke on the processes he followed which led to his memorable performance and dwelled on various challenges he battled through during the Players C'ship.

So close, but still not close enough....

On his overall run, Anirban told, "Well, yeah. I was very deeply disappointed as I wanted to win badly. I was in a great position. Coming up short never feels good but it was such a long tournament. It took all of my physical and mental strength. When you come up short after all that, it feels bad but I can walk away with a lot of pride."

Stressing on the mental aspect which is challenged during a PGA Tour

In this regard, the golfer opined, "Funny enough, I have been training quite hard behind closed doors. The results haven't backed it up but I am working very hard on the mental aspect. I have a performance specialist that I work with, in Bengaluru. We have been working on routines, processes and trying to follow them rigorously. That came through this week. I wasn't thinking about prize money, field, points, or world rankings points. I was playing golf, staying in tune with my processes and that is what helped. It was one of the first time situations when I was leading for the majority part of the game and I was very happy about it (to remain in the present)."

The Players C'ship was quite a challenging event for the golfers -- with tricky weather, playing conditions and lengthy duration of the tournament testing players to the hilt. Anirban analysed how he fought against various obstacles before falling short by a whisker.

Rain delays, weather being challenging, etc.

"I feel exhausted. I feel physically and mentally drained. We had a lot of rain on Thursday and Friday. Even on Wednesday. Saturday also was rainy. I had like five layers of clothing on during Sunday. It was freezing cold. Add to that, I was playing 52 holes. It was a very demanding tournament and week. Thus, mental aspect came into play and I feel I did a good job of economising all my mental and physical resources.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine has gained eyeballs over the past few days. The Ukraine crisis continues to make the headlines as the whole world has slammed Vladimir Putin-led Russia's tactics and have united in extending support to Ukraine amid such testing times.

Following the Ukraine-Russia conflict, the sporting world has also seen many sporting bodies coming together and shunning Russia after the unfortunate turn of events. Recently, WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo also got a chance to interact with India's ace tennis player Rohan Bopanna. The 41-year-old veteran player expressed his concern over the turn of events in Ukraine and reacted to the changes taking place in the tennis fraternity following Russia's invasion. He has, thus, voiced his opinion on the entire matter and shared a strong message as well.

In the exclusive interaction, Bopanna said, "It is very difficult for every athlete or person out there. It is difficult. Players can't do much as they travel the whole world. It is not easy on them. Sometimes you don't know whether it is the right call. Players are also getting affected. It is a very Catch 22 situation but it is never easy on athletes. (On ITF along with the ATP and WTA allowing Russia, Belarus players to play but banning them in team events), he asserted, "Banning, anyway, isn't the right way. When so many government bodies are involved, we don't know the pros and cons. Something like this happens, it is very very difficult. If the players can play, it is then ok but still never easy." Lastly, Bopanna called for peace and added, "Sport brings in great culture, friendship and peace....That's what we need today in the world. "

In the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and World Tennis Association (WTA) -- i.e. the governing body of men and women's tennis -- announced on Wednesday (March 02), that the Russian and Belarus players will be banned to take part in team events but can compete on tours, including Grand Slams, sans any national identity. The decision came despite many sports governing bodies -- such as IOC, FIFA, UEFA -- going ahead with imposing bans on the Russian players.

The ITF Board has made the decision to suspend the Russian Tennis Federation and Belarus Tennis Federation membership. "Our thoughts are with the people of Ukraine, and we commend the many tennis players who have spoken out and taken action against this unacceptable act of aggression. We echo their calls for the violence to end and peace to return," the tennis bodies added.

WION exclusive: Win against Magnus Carlsen a big boost, gives confidence, says chess sensation Praggnanandhaa

The top priority of Dr S. Unnikrishnan Nair, Director of India's Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), is to implement the important missions scheduled for the year 2022.

This includes the culmination of rocket launch missions and a few technology demonstrations and crucial tests.

VSSC is the lead centre for the development of rockets and launch vehicle technology of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).

Dr Nair is also the Director, Human Spaceflight Centre, which is responsible for India's ambitious 'Gaganyaan' mission to send astronauts to space, on board an indigenous rocket in a crew module (habitat for astronauts).

WION spoke to Dr Unnikrishnan Nair to understand his vision for VSSC and the important developments that are underway.

Among the crucial requirements of a Human Spaceflight mission, is the ability to detach at will the crew module that sits atop the rocket and carry it to safety, in case of a failure or mission abort.

The ability to save the habitat that contains the astronauts has to be done under two scenarios - at the launch pad, in case an issue is detected with the rocket, or in-flight if there is a risk in going ahead with the mission. While ISRO had conducted the former (Pad abort test) once, the agency is presently working on demonstrating the ability to successfully detach the crew module, while the rocket is in-flight.

Also read | Indian Coast Guard inducts made-in-India choppers for maritime security of west coast

"We have realised a multi-purpose rocket known as 'TV' (Test Vehicle) to accomplish various demonstrations. This vehicle will be powered by the engine of a liquid fuel strap-on motor used on the GSLV Mk 2 rocket, which is ISRO's trusted and reliable Vikas engine. During the test, it can carry the crew module to the required altitude depending upon mission requirements. Once the rocket and crew module separate, the crew module will be on its own and deploy parachutes to slowly splash land on water" Dr Nair explained.

According to him, the Test Vehicle can be modified to demonstrate the possibility of vertical landing.

Besides this, the test vehicle will also be used to carry ISRO's air-breathing technology demonstrator, which aims to use atmospheric oxygen (as oxidiser) to burn the fuel it carries, rather than carrying an oxidiser on board.

Using air-breathing propulsion and re-using the rocket is widely regarded as a means to reduce the launch cost as compared to conventional rockets that fall back into the sea and are unusable after a single flight.

In the first half of this year, ISRO will also be testing the final landing phase of its Re-usable launch vehicle Technology Demonstrator (RLV-TD), which is similar to a winged rocket, that can be launched vertically and can land like an aircraft.

To test the landing phase of this vehicle, the prototype will be carried to an altitude of 2-3 km by helicopter, following which it will be released.

Another important technology is the 'Inflatable aerodynamic decelerator', a mechanism that can be used to slow down the re-entry vehicles or rocket stages that are re-entering the earth's atmosphere.

Meant to promote the reusability of rockets, this concept involves using a compact inflatable mechanism that remains closed during launch and will open up (inflate) while the rocket is re-entering, thus slowing it down.

"It is similar to how a parachute works, but parachutes are meant for subsonic speeds (slower than the speed of sound) and lower altitudes. This concept can be used for operating at hypersonic or supersonic speeds. This can also be applied for slowing down while attempting landing on planets like Mars," Dr Unnikrishnan elaborated.

Queried on the progress of the Gaganyaan mission, Dr Nair who is also the Director, Human Spaceflight Centre said that the propulsion stages of the service module (the component that will propel the crew module in space) is undergoing testing, the crew training is progressing and that parachutes would be tested during the in-flight abort test.

Notably, Gaganyaan will have two unmanned flights, before the actual mission that aims to ferry Indian astronauts to space, facilitate in-orbit experiments and return by splashing down in the ocean.

An alumnus of Kerala University (B.Tech in Mech Engineering), IISc, Bengaluru (ME in Aerospace engineering) and IIT-Madras (PhD in Mechanical Engineering), Dr Unnikrishnan Nair took charge as Director, VSSC, earlier this week.

He had started his career in Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Thiruvananthapuram, in 1985.

During his initial tenure at VSSC, he has made significant contributions to launch vehicle mechanisms, acoustic protection systems and payload fairing areas.

He was associated with Human Spaceflight Programme since its inception as the Project Director for technology development activities.

Young Indian origin golfer Akshay Bhatia made heads turn when he clinched The Bahamas Great Exuma Classic on the Korn Ferry Tour at Sandals Emerald Bay in January 2022. The 19-year-old teenager became only the third-youngest (after Australia's Jason Day and Korea's Sungjae IM) to win on the Korn Ferry Tour.

Akshay, whose family originally belongs to New Delhi, India made his professional debut at the 2019 Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson, Mississippi. Since then, his rise up the ladder has been evident and the youngster recently sat down for an exclusive interaction with WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo where he dwelled on his journey so far, decision to forego college education and his mentor fellow left-hander and the great, Phil Mickelson.

Sharing thoughts on his Korn Ferry Tour win, Akshay opined, "Yeah. I think the journey has played a big part in the lead-up to that win. I struggled for a long time but I was also playing against the best players in the world. I had three-four opportunities to be on the PGA Tour last season but it just wasn't my time yet. On Sunday (January 30), tennis fans across the globe were blessed to see one of the greatest comebacks in the history of the game, or in sports overall, when Rafael Nadal came from two sets down to emerge on top of Russia's Daniil Medvedev to clinch the 2022 Australian Open final at Melbourne Park, Australia.

It was after over 14 years that Nadal came from behind, being two sets down, in a Grand Slam final to beat his competitor and walk away with the coveted title. By virtue of Nadal's 2-6, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 win over the Russian player, the Spaniard won his second Aus Open title and achieved most Grand Slam titles in men's singles; i.e. 21.

Nadal also became the second man after World No. 1 Novak Djokovic -- who missed out on playing the first Grand Slam of the year due to the Covid-19 vaccination issue -- to have won each Grand Slam twice (minimum). After Nadal's historic triumph, WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo interacted the veteran Indian tennis coach Nandan Bal on the glorious comeback, rivalry between the Big Three -- Roger Federer, Nadal and Djokovic, touched upon the G.O.A.T debate and more.

Not just a 'clay court specialist'

Nandan pointed out how Nadal has moved up the ladder and is not just a clay court specialist. ''If you look at the beginning of his career, you had a guy who used to play 8-10 feet behind the baseline. Today, he is coming in so much. He has worked on his volleys, single-hand slice, etc. He's an all-court specialist. Maybe not so great on grass, but certainly good enough to be on hard (court). He is not being defensive anymore. The last three sets was absolutely unbelievable,'' he opined.

G.O.A.T?

Is Nadal the Greatest of all-time? In this regard, Nandal Bal said, 'During Rod Laver's (an all-time tennis great) time, three of the majors were on grass (Aus and US Open as well along with Wimbledon). That being said, somebody put it beautifully by saying that Nadal is the best on clay, Djokovic probably best on hard and Federer is the best on grass among the trio. But, the grace that Federer brings to the tennis court, both Nadal and Djokovic don't. Even if that is the consideration (for G.O.A.T spot), when you see such a fightback on the tennis court, you have to say that 'Nadal is a G.O.A.T'.''

Will Djoko get vaccinated?

''With this kind of tennis played by Nadal, Djokovic will have to take the vaccine to remain in contention. It will be difficult to beat Nadal in Paris (French Open) with him being in such form.''

Opening up of India’s predominantly state-run space sector to private firms, stakeholders and enabling it in true spirit are the top priories of Chairman, Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), Dr S. Somanath. In an exclusive conversation with WION/Zee Media, the Chairman shared his vision for the ongoing tenure, his thoughts on Indian re-usable rocket projects, his expectations from Indian start-ups and conglomerates, the ambitious Gaganyaan Programme and its related International collaborations and much more.

According to Dr Somanath, the process of facilitating the opening up of India’s space sector is a long-drawn one. This comprises putting in place specific legislations, policies for the new entrants, offering them opportunities, while also minimising their hurdles in their journey of entrepreneurship and innovation.

“My role will be to set in motion the process now, so as to see results in a few years of time. These are - new industries coming up and launching rockets from India, satellites being built by private companies, applications being used to meet the global demand etc."

Queried about the Indian share of the USD440bn global space economy being less than 2 per cent and ISRO’s measures to improve it, he said, the important part was to address the needs of users in India in an economical manner.

These users include the government of India, strategic agencies and commercial users. Mentioning that rockets and satellites were only a small part of the global space economy, he emphasised on earning revenue by providing space-based services and delivery of applications to users.

While he did not wish to get into numbers, he affirmed that India’s target would be to expand its share.

On the engineering goals of ISRO, in building advanced rockets, engines and more efficient satellites, he said that ISRO had to decide on future engines based on the future rockets that are being envisioned.

“We are now trying to figure out the cost-effectiveness and design complexities of future engines of different classes and will be working on them in future. With current engines, there is a limit to which we can grow in launch vehicle(lift) capacity."

Regarding satellites, he said that India had infrastructure (bus structures) for satellites weighing as less as 20-30kg to 5tons.

However, he admitted the need to innovate and make satellites more compact, inculcate advanced electronics and add more functionality in the given space.

“Winged re-usable rocket still has some merit and provides certain operational flexibility, we continue to work on winged reusable rockets and we have an ongoing programme to work on an orbital re-usable vehicle. We have not started working towards making current expendable rockets into re-usable rockets, we have to initiate that programme and it will be linked with engines we need to develop,” he replied when asked to elaborate on India’s efforts towards re-usable rockets and new-age methods of launching from jumbo jets etc.

Dr Somanath feels that Indian private companies (start-ups and established giants) need to play a larger role by involving themselves in space applications, building and launching of spacecrafts and rockets etc. The veteran rocket scientist also sees great promise in 10 Indian space start-ups, that are operating in different domains.

“It is very high, they are enthused and active in working on it… It is not easy.. a lot of knowledge is required… Share of knowledge from ISRO is necessary for them to succeed.. I am looking forward to seeing them succeed, with their initiative and with support of skilled people created by the space programme” he said, when asked about the prospects of Indian space start-ups launching their rockets in the next two years.

Regarding ISRO’s initiatives to remain competitive in a global market where launch cost (per kg to orbit) was drastically falling, he said, it was about making the systems simpler, using more commercial items to make manufacturing processes easy, conceiving re-usability to use rockets like planes etc.

“In ISRO we are already working on the winged rocket, vertical take-off and landing is the next step, for which, we need a (throttling) capable engine.. In the absence of that engine, we will start a tech demonstration programme and actual rocket development,” he explained about the future.

He also agreed that ISRO’s upcoming Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) was a step in the direction of bringing down launch costs and increasing accessibility to space.

“We wanted a simple rocket that can be built and operated by industry, without much complexity. Hence, SSLV is significantly simpler than the current rocket fleet (PSLV, GSLV) and it can be manufactured by smaller industries, as it uses simpler systems and commercially available materials.

So, it can be transferred 100 per cent to industry and it will be cost-efficient” he added.

Asked to elaborate on the human rating of GSLV Mk3 rocket for India’s Gaganyaan Human Spaceflight mission, the former director of Vikram Sarabhai Space Center explained that the GSLV Mk3 rocket was already capable of being human-rated, whereas the same cannot be done for every rocket.

Simply put, the human rating is the process of transforming a rocket meant for carrying cargo into one that can reliably carry astronauts. “Minimising acceleration, sound level, shock, these are already into the rocket. Further, we need to ruggedise marginalities, possibilities of failure anywhere in design are corrected, the entire rocket manufacturing process is being made more quality sensitive, we do a large number of tests to prove if any higher level of confidence is to be built,” he said.

On the failsafe measures being engineered, he added that there were in-built measures and intelligence to detect anomalies.

“If one system fails, the next should take over, and if the second fails, the third must take over… and still continue the mission or abort. In the human-rated rocket, most critical systems are going to be quadruple redundant.. there are going to be four systems, so that, in no way will there be a possibility of a major catastrophe,” he explained.

As India’s most ambitious spacefaring mission, Gaganyaan is a leading example of India’s collaboration with agencies from all major spacefaring nations. Sharing his views on the same, Dr Somanath said that it involved procurement, technology transfer and working together with different nations.

“In rocket design, we are seeking the support of various countries. I am directly dealing with various facilities across the globe for wind tunnel testing, which we need to characterise the vehicle and crew module. Human spaceflight requires much more sharing of knowledge, there are experts across nations who can help us. We will continue to seek support from US, Russians, Japanese, Europeans etc. We also need global support for tracking, rescue, communications, and even emergencies,” he stated.

While all foreign space agencies are ready and happy to help in various aspects, there are also critical systems, technologies that will not be shared or offered for purchase.

These include environmental control and life support systems, crew module, landing parachute systems, propulsion etc.

However, space suits and seats can be procured from international agencies. Indian astronauts are also undergoing training in established foreign facilities.

As Chairman, he also extolled ISRO as an organisation for the strong team and centre-level leadership that is in place. He sees this tenure as an opportunity to inspire his team and make their vision a reality, by creating a support system. He expressed confidence that team ISRO would come up with greater ideas, whereas, he as Chairman would figure out the national and futuristic importance of the ideas and seek government support to implement them. With the support of the people of India and all stakeholders of the space programme, he firmly believes it will become a reality.

“My work is centred around rockets, but I’m interested in everything in space - from rockets to satellites to space science and mechanical engineering… I am passionate and I will learn as much as I have learnt so far and even more…" Dr S. Somanath signs off with a confident smile, as we wish him and ISRO all success - on Earth, in orbit and beyond!

These are - new industries coming up and launching rockets from India, satellites being built by private companies, applications being used to meet the global demand etc." Queried about the Indian share of the USD440bn global space economy being less than 2 per cent and ISRO’s measures to improve it, he said, the important part was to address the needs of users in India in an economical manner. With current engines, there is a limit to which we can grow in launch vehicle(lift) capacity." Regarding satellites, he said that India had infrastructure (bus structures) for satellites weighing as less as 20-30kg to 5tons. ISRO Chairman Exclusive: “With support of all stakeholders - India & ISRO will have greater times ahead”

The United States mourned the 1st anniversary of the 2021 January 6 Capitol riots on Thursday.

Videos from January 6, 2021, show the violence committed in the former president's name. There are videos showing attackers beating security officers with iron bars and clubs, and a policeman is crushed and howling in pain in a doorway.

A crowd of protesters clad in assault gear call for the vice president Mike Pence to be hanged, while Democratic and Republican legislators flee. During the riot, a woman was also shot in the Capitol hall and killed.

America was stunned by the hours-long assault, and so was much of the world that was used to seeing the United States as a model of stable democracy.

However, there was one man who had predicted this "insurrection" weeks in advance. A political analyst from Jerusalem had predicted the riots two weeks before they happened. Extremism analyst, Arieh Kovler had predicted that armed militias would try to storm the Capitol in January.

Kovler had made this prediction on Twitter.

In his tweet, he wrote "On January 6, armed Trumpist militias will be rallying in DC, at Trump's orders. It's highly likely that they'll try to storm the Capitol after it certifies Joe Biden's win. I don't think this has sunk in yet."

WION's correspondent Jodie Cohen had an exclusive conversation with the author of this tweet. We asked Kovler to explain how he foresaw the Capitol insurrection.

According to him, the prediction was based on his observation of events from before December 2020. He said that there was a huge number of Trump supporters, Republicans who thought there was zero chance they could lose.

"Whenever they saw any evidence that Joe Biden was in the lead, a poll...any kind of research they just didn't believe it. They said it was all fake and of course, they were supported in this by Trump, who's telling them the whole country is on their side, and that they're going to win 40 states. As elections came closer and closer they became more sure and so on the day of the election when it became within a day or two pretty clear that Joe Biden had won and had won a decent number of electoral seats, they didn't change that view."

Interestingly, Donald Trump echoed the same sentiment, telling his most devoted supporters that he was still going to win, and he would prove it any day now. His followers believed he had a plan and that he would return to the office any day now, proving the election was a fraud.

"And as time went on the last possible day they could carry on believing that was the day Congress would confirm Joe Biden was the winner, January 6th. Then when Trump himself took to Twitter about three weeks before Jan 6 and said come to Washington DC for a big rally, it was pretty clear to me that it's only gonna go one way," explains Kovler.

"All of these people...thousands...tens of thousands..you could see them beginning to organise...carpool...take time off of work...were gonna come to Washington DC, thinking they're gonna see Trump's victory. And when they realised that's not gonna happen, they were gonna be really angry," he concluded.

It has been 133 days since the Taliban's second coming in Afghanistan, and from the last 100 days, the regime has cropped women's rights, plunged the country into an economic and humanitarian crisis and discarded democracy from the country. In the latest, the Taliban has dissolved Afghanistan's election commission which was a panel that supervised polls during the previous Western-backed administration.
