2022 was an action-packed season for tennis lovers. It started with Novak Djokovic's Covid vaccination row at the Australian Open before Rafael Nadal won the French Open. The likes of Elena Rybakina and Iga Swiatek also tasted success in women's singles. While the year saw the rise of Carlos Alcaraz -- winning the US Open -- it was also a witness to the retirement of Roger Federer, Serena Williams, Ashleigh Barty, etc. After lots that took place in 2022, a new tennis season has already kicked off and the games are coming thick and fast in 2023; with the Tata Open (in Pune) and the Australian Open which will commence on January 16.

Talking about the Tata Open, the reigning US Open champions Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury are currently plying their trade at the event, being held in Pune. The pair have been a force to reckon with in recent years and will like to remain consistent and go a step ahead in 2023. After a Round of 16 victory in the Tata Open, where Rajeev-Joe went past Sebastian Baez-Luis David Martinez 6-3, 7-6 (7-1), Rajeev had an exclusive interaction with WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo. The American player spoke at length on the emergence of young talents, the retirement of stalwarts and on Novak Djokovic ahead of the Australian Open. Excerpts:

Rajeev a very happy new year to you and considering your Indian roots this must be a memorable experience returning to India to play and that too as the top seed.

Happy New Year to you as well. I've been in India for quite some time, since 2016. Covid had a major role to play in it. Happy to be in Pune. Never been here so it is good.

Tennis saw three high-profile retirements in 2022 with Roger Federer, Serena Williams and before them Ashleigh Barty. with Rafael Nadal one is not sure how much more punishment that battered body can take...Nadal and Djokovic did win three of the four slams last year but has the baton been officially passed?

I don't think it is really past yet. I honestly believe if Novak was playing in Australia, Wimbledon had points and if he was allowed to play US Open, he would have been the No. 1 ranked player to date. He showed his class again in the ATP Tour finals. He played so little last year but still was able to keep such a high ranking. It is getting there (for the young guns) but I don't think Djokovic is ready to give up just yet.

Obviously, when we factor in the 2022 season we have to remember that Djokovic didn't play as much as he would have liked. Let's leave his vaccination beliefs aside and focus only on the phenomenal player that he is. You saw him at the tour finals and do you get the feeling that he is going to carry a lot of hurt into the Australian Open and is the player to beat?

He's the player to beat. I'm guessing he has won 8-9 times there. He is so difficult on that surface and everybody will agree that he is the guy to beat there for sure, even if his ranking is not No 1.

A lot of players will also head into the Aus open thinking hang on, we were the next gen but it's Alcaraz who has seized the initiative...the likes of Medvedev, Tsitsipas, Zverev face a defining season don't you think?

I think you have seen this generation of Federer, Nadal, Murray and Djokovic have eaten up a few generations. I don't think Medvedev, Tsitsipas and the likes are done by any stretch but I think they know they have such young talents on their heels and that will make for a super competitive 4-5 years when Djokovic and Nadal did. Don't think it will be like the last few years where only a few guys have dominated. I think it will be very competitive and refreshing in that sense.

Before I close this, what will be a good season for you personally, something you would be happy with coming December this year?

Winning slams always make a great year. We have managed to do that for the last 2-3 years in a row so hopefully, that's a start. Becoming the No. 1 team in the world is something we haven't achieved. We have been No. 2 for quite some time. Those two things are at the top of the list. Everything else will follow through.

India is not just about cricket. Sure, the game remains a top choice for many but a plethora of non-cricket stalwarts have popularised various other sports. Talking about tennis, the game's rise has been spectacular. Of course, the likes of Vijay Amritraj, Jaideep Mukherjee, Leander Paes, and Mahesh Bhupathi were the pioneers of the game, Sania Mirza, Rohan Bopanna, Ramesh Ramanathan, Sumit Nagal, Somdevdev Burman, etc., have given it an extra mileage in the country.

Riya Bhatia is another tennis sensation on the rise. The 25-year-old is making giant strides and has been India's new No. 2 ranked player for quite some time. In addition, she clinched two national titles -- hardcourt and grass-court national championships in 2016. Recently, she was seen playing for the Pro Veri Supersmashers in the ongoing fourth season of the Pro Tennis League (PTL) -- a platform for bidding young stars to hone their skills and showcase their credentials -- and ahead of it, WION's Aditya Sahay had an exclusive interview with her. During the interaction, she shed light on her game style, challenges of playing on different surfaces and named her favourites from the big league of players.

How is Pro Tennis League honing the skills of young players?

I would definitely say it is helping the sport in India. Wish I had something like this when I was a junior. We can mentor juniors and teach them how to play certain points. It's only through such leagues that they can connect with us and vice versa. With Indian people coming and watching us, it's a new format so it's a fun thing for all involved.

How is it for Riya to play on different surfaces?

I'm an all-round player. Changing surfaces isn't a big issue for me. I enjoy playing on all. My favourite is clay but I've been performing well on hard courts. Grass is something close to my heart and I played my best game there at the WTA in Germany and won the national grasscourt. My game is more of an all-round player where I can change my game style according to the court and conditions needed. Certainly, there are many things I've been working on and these leagues (such as the PTL) are a good way to prepare for big tournaments. You get into a zone by playing such leagues and PTL is definitely helpful.

Your big goals going ahead?

I've been No. 2 in India for a very long time. My highest ranking in singles was 300 in internationals and my goal is to go higher than that. To represent India in the Olympics and win a medal. I also want to play some Grand Slams and win big matches over there.

Whose your favourites among the current league of players?

I don't want to copy but there is a lot to learn from great players. I've always looked up to Roger Federer. He is always calm. Lots to imbibe from him on how he thinks, moves on the court and creates magic. From women, I absolutely love Ashleigh Barty. I feel my game style is close to hers. She's very aggressive. At the moment, I like to watch a lot of matches of Novak Djokovic and Iga Swiatek.

While the Pro Veri Supersmashers have had a forgettable run in the ongoing PTL, Riya's career has surely taken off with a lot of promise.

Ahead of this week's Hero Cup Challenge, Tiger Woods announced his withdrawal from the competition citing a foot injury, that is "making it difficult to walk." His pulling out from the charity tournament, in the Bahamas, has left organisers in a tough spot as the veteran golfer hadn't been seen in action after appearing at St Andrew's for The Open Championship early this year.

During an exclusive interaction with WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo, Woods said that he "wanted to play the hero world challenge but pushed myself too hard".

The legendary golfer said, "Was playing using a cart and the scores were good but the moment I started to walk the golf course the problems started. Frustrating, as my game was good enough to compete against the guys but my body isn't ready right now."

Woods also commented on the ongoing LIV Golf vs PGA Tour tussle, which continues to make the headlines in 2022. "The LIV golf PGA tour issue was not handled well. There is nothing wrong in having competition and adding to the ecosystem of golf," Woods told WION, further stating that "it has become pretty ugly and it is not good for the game of golf."

The world rankings system is flawed and at the moment there are many moving pieces." "We will come to a resolution some way or another and hopefully it is a positive one for all parties involved," the veteran concluded.

Earlier, on Tuesday (November 29), Woods didn't mince his words while talking about LIV CEO Greg Norman during a press conference ahead of the Hero World Challenge.

“As Rory said, I think Greg’s got to leave and then we can eventually, hopefully, have a stay between the two lawsuits and figure something out. But why would you change anything if you’ve got a lawsuit against you? They sued us first. I see that there’s an opportunity out there if both organisations put a stay on their litigation but that’s the problem, they’ve got to put a stay on it."

“I think it has to start with leadership on their side. Understanding that what is happening right now is not the best fit or future for the whole game of golf. Now, what is the best way for our game to grow? It’s not this way. You need to have the two bodies come together. If one side has so much animosity, someone trying to destroy our tour, then how do you work with that?", Woods pointed out.

While the LIV Golf-PGA Tour tussle is far from over, looks like it has also severely hit the equation between Woods and Norman. At present, the former remains firm on his stance that both LIV Golf and PGA Tour cannot exist simultaneously.

India's top-ranked golfer Anirban Lahiri believes that the hatred directed towards the LIV Series has been misplaced. In an exclusive conversation with WION Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo, Lahiri said that golf has suffered due to the battle between LIV and the PGA Tour.

WION Sports Exclusive: India No. 1 Lahiri says 'Hatred for LIV has been misplaced'

The LIV Golf versus PGA Tour battle continues to make heads turn with each passing day. Ever since LIV Golf came to light, it has generated eyeballs all across the golf fraternity. One can like or dislike the concept of LIV Golf, but one certainly cannot ignore it by any means. For a startup, LIV Golf has already made a global impact.

It is to be noted that the PGA Tour had recently countersued Greg Norman's LIV, alleging that the rival golf circuit is using unfair practices by attracting players by virtue of offering whopping deals. Moreover, on Thursday (October 6), it was revealed that the LIV Golf players will not receive world ranking points for this week's event in Bangkok or the tournament in Jeddah later this month, revealed by the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) organisation.

Despite all this, LIV Golf Tour remains undeterred. On the sidelines of the sixth event of its inaugural season, WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo caught up with LIV Golf CEO Norman. The 67-year-old has had a lot to deal with ever since LIV Golf gained precedence all across the globe and spoke at length on various topics.

'Kerry Packer changed the way cricket was played and IPL came out of it'

Backing LIV Golf, the retired professional golfer Norman said, "The product is speaking for itself. the business model is being received well. We have improved every week. From our innovation or evolution, we have improved. We can never be a platform that sits in a box. We want to change it up. We want to adapt to the culture of where we are today. The players are loving it. It was never there earlier."

Anirban Lahiri recently called LIV Golf the T20 of golf. There was a similar sort of pushback when the 50-over format was gradually replaced by T20 cricket. Is the problem with the detractors of this circuit that they have got their blinkers on and are not ready to embrace change? In this regard, Norman -- who spent as many as 331 weeks as the No. 1 ranked player in the 1980s and 1990s -- opined, "For 53 years they have been doing the same thing. it is boring it is staid. Kerry Packer changed the way cricket was played and IPL came out of it. With that, the franchise model has grown in IPL. Test cricket never died. LIV Golf is a different platform and model. Majors will not die. Everyone plays in the majors. It is just that certain people are monopolists and don't want change."

On being asked what personal cost he had to bear for relentlessly backing LIV Golf, Norman said, "I have lost shallow-minded friends who have judged my game to take the game of golf and grow it. My heat shield is strong and protective. I knew I was going to face stick. I understood the model and not one person in this world I have spoken to me told me it is a stupid idea." The winner of 89 professional tournaments further added, "It is just that the monopolists are trying to destroy us. We have never tried to destroy anyone. Our players should play other tours. Why can't other tours allow us to play here?"

Norman, who is regarded as one of the all-time greats in golf, is certainly not backing down in his fight to keep LIV Golf on top. He hasn't minced his words and remains crystal clear of his vision with the Saudi-backed circuit.

Why can't other tours allow us to play here?" Norman, who is regarded as one of the all-time greats in golf, is certainly not backing down in his fight to keep LIV Golf on top. He hasn't minced his words and remains crystal clear of his vision with the Saudi-backed circuit.

The PGA Tour-LIV Golf face-off is far from getting over. The PGA Tour had recently accused LIV Golf of using antitrust laws "as a cudgel" and undermining its contracts with players in a counterclaim to a lawsuit the Saudi-backed circuit filed in September. LIV Golf has acquired the services of some of the PGA Tour's top members -- including six-times major winner Phil Mickelson with enormous purses -- whereas others who followed suit and joined the rebel circuit have been suspended by the miffed PGA Tour.

Earlier, Mickelson and 10 other players had accused the PGA Tour of antitrust violations. In its counterclaim, the PGA Tour had pointed out that the golfers were aware of not having any unilateral right to defect, and that breaching their contracts would lead to suspensions. "(This case) is a cynical effort to avoid competition and to freeride off of the Tour’s investment in the development of professional golf."

"LIV has openly sought to damage the Tour’s business relationships with its members by inducing them to breach their contractual requirements. Even going so far as to pay members' legal fees to make breaching their contracts with Tour more enticing," the Tour said.

Hence, a lot has transpired ever since LIV Golf has come into existence. The Saudi-backed circuit's CEO and legendary figure Greg Norman spoke at length and slammed the 'monopolists' of the game, reacted to the world rankings being denied to LIV Golf players and more during an exclusive interaction with Wion's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo (on the sidelines of the sixth event of LIV Golf's inaugural season in Bangkok, Thailand).

On being asked about the court cases being filed on both sides and how dirty it has become between LIV Golf and PGA Tour, Norman said, "It is back to the monopolists. They can't break us down because golf is a force for good. If someone wants to smear you then shame on you. Don't be a hypocrite. The PGA tour has 27 sponsors that too have tons or billions of dollars of business in Saudi. Why can those sponsors be there and not with LIV? Golf Saudi is the largest sponsor of women's golf. Why is it not good for 48 men but good for them or the US govt to do deals with Saudi? I feel very good about where I am and with the product. I am content with what I am doing for the game of golf."

The 67-year-old also opined on LIV Golf players being denied ranking points, as revealed by the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) organisation on Thursday (October 06). "Not a setback. My players should have world-ranking points. "It doesn't make sense from a major or broadcaster. You are paying for your strength in the field. By not allowing LIV players points, you are degrading the game of golf. It is not doing the game of golf any good," he mentioned.

Exclusive | Asia is sleeping giant to help game reach non-traditional destinations: LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman

A lot has transpired in golf in recent times. Since the inception of LIV Golf, it has left the golf world divided with the PGA Tour currently being involved in a court tussle with the rival tour. The PGA Tour had recently countersued Greg Norman's LIV, alleging that the rival golf circuit is using unfair practices by attracting players courtesy of whopping deals.

On the other hand, LIV Golf remains unperturbed by distractions or outside noises. Ahead of the 2022 LIV Golf event in Bangkok, Thailand (i.e. the sixth event of its inaugural season), WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo caught up with Spain's Sergio Garcia. The 42-year-old, who has won 36 international tournaments as a professional and is arguably Europe's greatest Ryder Cup player, spoke at length on the divide in the sport due to LIV Golf vs PGA Tour, on joining the Saudi Arabia-backed circuit and chances of playing in the Ryder Cup.

"We are super excited (about joining the LIV Golf series) about where we are headed. Yes (we are pioneers). LIV Golf has given us an opportunity to be that. We are really confident that this is the right decision. On being asked if there was there something in the game that wasn't right, leading to LIV Golf Series, Garcia said, "Not really. I think some things could've been done differently with more energy and focus on younger generations. If you look at the age average for LIV, compared to the European or PGA Tour, it is much younger. At the end of the day, we try to encourage and get those young people to follow the game. LIV Golf is doing that. We are happy to do it."

When asked if he is surprised by PGA's 'this is my turf, nobody can be on it' policy, the veteran Sergio said, "Well, the game of golf is global. It belongs to everybody. They tried to do something for their benefit, but we will also try to do whatever best is possible." On the overall reaction and flak coming towards LIV Series, the Spaniard opined, "We knew something of this was going to happen. But that's ok. We are all grown up. We all know what is best for the game and best for our families. Apart from that, it is all white noise."

LIV's strategic alliance with META

On Thursday (October 06), a big announcement came in. LIV Golf players will now earn world ranking points starting this week after the developmental MENA (the Middle East and North Africa) Tour forged a strategic alliance with the Saudi Arabia-backed circuit.

"We are taking this mutually beneficial action to support the game at the developmental level and because of the importance and fairness of LIV golfers qualifying for OWGR points," LIV Golf President Atul Khosla said in a MENA Tour news release. "We're pleased to create pathways that give more opportunities for young players, while also giving fans rankings that include all the world’s best golfers."

Regarding this development, Sergio stated, "It is big. Super exciting. For younger players who don't have majors and want to hold onto their rankings and get rewarded for their good play, so that they can have eligibility to play the majors, thus, we are super excited about that."

Will Sergio Garcia feature in the Ryder Cup?

With Sergio joining LIV Golf, this could well lead to the end of his career competing in blue and gold. He signed off by saying, "I would love to (play). Unfortunately, that won't come down to me. It depends on the European tour, the captain and the people involved there. We will see what happens." It is to be noted that the superstar golfer has been given until Friday (October 07) to make a decision.

Roger Federer last played a competitive match during Wimbledon 2021 where Hubert Hurkacz defeated him in the quarter-finals. Since then, the Swiss maestro struggled to remain fit and didn't take part in any further tournaments. Thus, the whole tennis fraternity sensed that the former world number one's retirement was on the cards.

After Serena Williams called it quits with her final appearance in the recently-held US Open, Federer has joined her in the retirement journey with a shocking announcement on Thursday evening (September 15). "As many of you know, the past three years have presented me with challenges in the form of injuries and surgeries. I've worked hard to return to full competitive form. But I also know my body's capacities and limits, and its message to me lately has been clear. I am 41 years old. I have played more than 1,500 matches over 24 years. Tennis has treated me more generously than I ever would have dreamt, and now I must recognise when it is time to end my competitive career," tweeted Federer.

Thus, the D-day finally arrived. Many hoped for this day to miraculously never show up but it finally did with Federer -- one of the greatest athletes -- calling it quits after this year's Laver Cup. Following the shock announcement, WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo interacted with India's legendary player Mahesh Bhupathi -- 12-time Grand Slam champion -- as the veteran lauded the Swiss maestro and spoke on his legacy.

"I think that's what we all wished for (one last shot from Federer before ending his career). Honestly, Roger has been able to excel his career incredibly long. At his age and how physical tennis is, it wasn't meant to be unfortunately," opined Bhupathi.

Federer's legacy - Ultimate professional, thorough gentleman & a fan-favourite

"Obviously being ultimate professional and a gentleman. Roger would say hello to literally everyone regardless of ranking and status. Very very few of the past champions were ever like that. He was not only a fan-favourite but a player-favourite as well," Bhupathi claimed.

What stood out among Federer's records?

The 48-year-old Bhupathi opined, "I think it was just the entire package. Once that switch came on after winning his maiden Grand Slam, he was a brat by breaking racquets but one fine day that switched turned on and since then he never set a foot wrong. "Well, a lot of people ask me this. Including me, he will always be a fan favourite. For anyone who understands the game, he will always be up there. But sports statistics don't lie and he finishes at number three (20) -- behind Rafael Nadal (22) and Novak Djokovic (21) in terms of Grand Slam titles. Buchanan: Thank you Jodie. Yes, I think I probably have two. I was invited to lunch in Buckingham Palace, which the Queen used to hold regularly to bring people of interest together. And there was a wonderful moment when the doors opened and everyone expected the Queen to come to the doors. In fact, came through, the carpet of corgis. And the corgis came first. And when you saw the corgis coming then the queen would follow. They were like the Praetorian Guard of the corgis. So that was one memory I had.

Then another was when I finally did finally leave working for the then Prince of Wales full-time. So I did back in 2008. And I was so privileged to be granted an audience with the Queen. And I remember that, although I've been working for the Prince of Wales for that length of time and I had been with the Queen and in attendance with the Queen so often, but it was just me and her. And I stood outside that door before I went in and my heart was thumping. I could hear it like a brass band. I thought everyone could hear my heart thumping like this and I was so nervous and then I went in and she was so gracious and so kind and said such lovely things. And we had a lovely conversation about cattle which made me very happy because I was actually going back to my family farm and the Queen of course had many cattle, both at Sandringham and Windsor and she loved them dearly. And so we had a very happy conversation about that.

WION: You’re a strong believer in Prince, now King Charles. What qualities do you believe he will bring to the throne?

Buchanan: They are legion Jodie, they're legion. He has had 50 years as Prince of Wales, as a remarkable Prince of Wales travelling this country and the world, realms and the Commonwealth. And he has developed an extraordinary wisdom. He has great leadership skills. And he also has great kindness and compassion which is so crucial right now when we actually all need to be perhaps a little more kind to each other.

WION: As father to the future king William, and his brother Harry, who have come together to pay their respects to the Queen, do you feel King Charles will play a continued unifying role, bringing together members of the Royal family?

Buchanan: Without shadow of a doubt. There is something more and so palpable here in the United Kingdom at the moment. It's the unifying of a nation. And if you look around at the crowds wherever they are you've got all ages, all backgrounds, all colours, all nationalities. It's quite breathtaking. And it's so moving to see it. And his words in his remarkable speech on the Friday night, when he talked about his love for Prince Harry and all that he wanted Prince William, who is now Prince of Wales, to take on the mantle that he did. He is so fond of his children and his grandchildren, deeply fond of them. And I think you saw that expressed when the now Prince of Wales and Duke of Sussex and their wives did that walkabout. It was wonderful and perfect. And that is exactly what the new king will wish to see and want to see with his family but much more widely. He is a remarkably unifying force.

WION: There had been some concern about whether or not some of the British people would accept Charles as King. Do you believe that the reception he’s received puts those concerns to bed now?

Buchanan: Honestly I never had any concerns. Not one. I've worked with him for so many years. I went around the country. To all parts of this country. To all sorts of communities. Urban areas, rural areas. Didn't matter where you were. There was never a second when there wasn't enormous warmth for him. And I was always bemused by this news somehow that there has been a distrust or dislike or something because I never saw it and I rather suspect that it was the media rather choosing that, and I don't wish for one minute to undermine the media, Jodie. But I do think that's what they kind of wanted to see. But I know, when I was out there with him, it was never present. He was so warmly received. And I am not remotely surprised by the outpouring, and it is an outpouring of support, love and respect and admiration for him now.

WION: There has been some speculation about whether republican movements across the Commonwealth might gain in strength. How do you see Commonwealth countries being impacted by the transition to the new King?

Buchanan: I think you have to draw a distinction, Jodie if I may say so. Because the Commonwealth does not have the monarch as the head of state. It's a family of nations who choose to come together. The realms have the king as the head of state. And it is the realms who might have a view about whether they wish that to continue. The view of the monarch would simply be if they'll have democracies. It is entirely up to them. Whatever they choose to do. However, he will always have a deep and abiding affection for those countries. He has visited these countries on many many occasions. And he really does know them and he loves them. He loves being there. He loves being with the people. But it is their choice. It is always their choice. It's what the Queen always made clear. And it is what the King will make clear.

WION: In the past, Prince Charles has expressed opinions, which of course as King, he wouldn’t be allowed to do. At the same time, he’s widely respected for having been decades ahead of others in terms of his environmental awareness, for example. What channels does King Charles have to be able to express his views while maintaining protocol as king?

Buchanan: Well, he surely has been a leader, he has been so prescient about these issues and worked so hard for decades to try to bring them to the attention of the people and to try to make a difference himself. The fact of the matter is, he made it clear on Friday night, things have changed. He said they would change before he became king. First thing he said was, it's not the same anymore. I will have to move away from those causes and charities to which he was so connected. Will he find ways in a way that a monarch finds ways to advise their prime ministers quietly under the radar? I am sure he will do that. He will not do it in any way at all which would undermine the Constitution and that critical relationship between the monarch and the state. It would never happen.

The sporting fraternity is eagerly waiting for the commencement of the forthcoming Commonwealth Games. The 2022 edition of the marquee event will be held in Birmingham and the Indian contingent comprises a plethora of promising athletes who are strong medal contenders.

While Neeraj Chopra, India's javelin thrower, bowed out of the quadrennial event due to a groin injury, on Tuesday (July 26), the countrymen can still pin their hopes on several players to shine and take India's medal tally higher in the overall rankings in the CWG'22 edition. Ahead of the upcoming tournament, Wion's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo spoke to India's men's hockey team's captain Manpreet Singh and head coach Graham Reid as the duo dwelled on Australia's dominance at the Games (having won six gold medals since the game's inclusion in 1998), India's fixtures and more:

How to stop a rampant Australia?

Graham Reid: Yeah look it certainly is (a challenge). It has an interesting history in CWG for the Aussies. Unfortunately, I was never able to play as a player but since then (in 1998), Australia have certainly dominated. Having said that, India have also done very well over the years and the job this time is to take it to the next level and win that elusive gold at CWG 2022.

Intimidated playing the Aussies?

Manpreet Singh: Doesn't matter. They are No. 1 but we need to give our best. If we give our best, definitely the result will favour us. You want to win the gold medal so you are more confident and fired up.

On Indian Olympic Association's Covid precaution (asking players to limit outings to prevent viral infection's spread)

Manpreet: We are doing the same thing (as we did in the Tokyo 2020). We heard some players got infected, hence, they were sent back. Hence, we are taking up precautions and following all protocols because even if one person gets infected, it will affect the team.

On India's opener vs Ghana, playing England next

Reid: It is our second game but we always have to take one game at a time. Ghana is the one we are focusing on at the moment. England are at home here. Playing the English is a tough ask but a great test for us to see where we are.

India are placed in Pool B along with England, Ghana, Canada and Wales and they open their campaign versus the nation from West Africa, on July 31. So far, India's best performance at CWG came when they ended as runners-up in the 2010 edition, in New Delhi, after being hammered 8-0 by the Aussies. Liverpool was thrashed 4-0 by Manchester United in an exhibition match held at the Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok on Tuesday (July 12). Despite the defeat, the Jurgen Klopp-led club still remains one of the strongest contenders for winning the forthcoming EPL season.

Liverpool is currently in Singapore where they next play Crystal Palace, in an exhibition match, at the National Stadium on Thursday (July 14). Ahead of the EPL season 2022/23, The Reds' former captain and a legend of the club Sami Hyypia opined on Mohamed Salah's extension, thrashing at the hands of new-look Manchester United in Bangkok, team's strengths and rivalry with Man City.

Sami, a former club captain who was part of Liverpool's victorious Champions League campaign in 2004-05, interacted with WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo and shared insights on many aspects. Firstly, he played down Liverpool's 4-0 loss vs Man United and said, "Yeah, everyone knows how big the rivalry is. I won't be too worried about the result. Everyone knows the circumstances under which we played. At United, there is a new manager. He wants to be successful straightaway so these friendlies are more important for him. I won't be too worried about this loss. I am sure Liverpool will be ready once the Premier League starts."

Regarding Mohamed Salah, Hyypia lavished huge praise on the 30-year-old Egyptian footballer and said, "He is a great player. One of the best players. He has shown that for many years. I'm glad he is staying here at Liverpool. When he performs like that, it is good for him as well as Liverpool. When Salah came on (in Bangkok), it looked like he had trained for a long long time. His fitness isn't a concern. He came from a holiday. Maybe that was more of a mental holiday. But, he seemed to be in good shape."

32 clean sheets in 63 games last season. Thus, without a doubt, a lot of Liverpool's success boils down to their defence and goalkeeper. In this regard, Hyypia said, "It is a great record. That department is well-equipped at the moment. We had a bit of a problem last year, with the central defence's injury, but now that department is sorted. Allison (Becker) is a world-class goalkeeper and he saved us many times last season. He made game-winning saves. In every department, maybe we are better than last season. I know Sadio Mane left for Bayern Munich but when a player wants to leave you can't force him to stay. If they aren't happy, so move on. Overall, even in that department, we are well-equipped."

It seems to be a two-horse race -- between Liverpool vs Man City -- for the top-two berth in the upcoming EPL season as well. Commenting on this, the 48-year-old veteran told, "I don't know if it is the biggest rivalry. There is a rivalry then it is all about good recruitment. It means a great atmosphere has been created. Each player knows his role. That has been great to see. The scouting department has also been great for Liverpool. They have been spot-on. They are doing an important job. It looks great. I don't think next season there will be anyone to challenge those two (Man City and Liverpool). Chelsea, and Arsenal would want to be in a position where Man City are, however, I don't think they will challenge them both."

Liverpool will look to go the distance and end with the EPL championship after ending second in the last edition. They begin their campaign versus Fulham on August 6.

Manchester United remains the most successful English Premier League (EPL) team, having won the elite championship for most times (20). Nonetheless, they have struggled to move past the Sir Alex Ferguson era and have been a pale shadow of themselves, especially in the last few seasons.

In the last EPL season, Man United brought back Cristiano Ronaldo and assembled a star-studded line-up, however, still finished sixth and missed out on champions league football for 2022-23. With the upcoming edition to kick off soon, the new manager Erik ten Hag has a lot riding on his shoulders to turn the fortunes of the premier club. On Tuesday (July 12), Ronaldo-less United locked horns with Liverpool in what was an exhibition football match, held at the Rajamangala National Stadium in Bangkok.

The two spoke on what needs to be done for the most successful team to get back to its usual standards.

Sunil Chhetri-led India have been on a roll. In the AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers, Chhetri & Co. have been on fire with three successive victories under their belt and made it to the Asian Cup, to be held next year.

India beat Cambodia, 2-0, in their opening game and then defeated Afghanistan 2-1 to make it to the showpiece event. On Tuesday (June 14), India had already qualified for the next round before their game versus Hong Kong, before demolishing them, by 4-0, to top Group D at the iconic Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata. This, this became only the first time that India made it to the main event for the second successive edition, fifth overall (1964, 1984, 2011, 2019, 2023).

Following India's memorable run, Wion's Sports Editor got a chance to interact with Indian football team's vice-captain and goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu to dwell upon India's historic achievement. "Definitely (moment to celebrate). We all should be very happy and grateful. It was very very important period for Indian football. I think all the hardwork showed and extremely happy to qualify for the Asian Cup again. Back-to-back qualification definitely motivates us," Sandhu said joining virtually from Mohali.

He further opined the coach Igor Štimac's plan for the qualifiers, what all the team went through and stated, "We were able to achieve everything we wanted. Not having too much football in domestic doesn't help. We have to be 30-45 days training camp to achieve peak fitness and be ready for such games. I think that is something we should be thinking about. We should not come into these games thinking about such factors. The rankings do look very good to the eye but it doesn't tell the whole story. Any team can beat anyone. We went out giving that respect to each and every team we played and also do our jobs perfectly," added the 30-year-old.
