The locals have sought an inquiry into the matter.

A doctor who was scheduled to perform numerous surgeries at a hospital collapsed&nbsp;seconds before beginning the operations.&nbsp;The case was reported from a hospital in Chikkamagaluru, Karnataka when nine women were hospitalised for a sterilisation operation.

The doctor, known as Balakrishna, was discovered sleeping inside the operating theatre since the morning of the surgery.

The patient&nbsp;was&nbsp;given anaesthesia at about 8 am, with the procedures set for 2 pm, according to the details.

The doctor passed out before he could begin the surgery and was discovered drunk.&nbsp;Meanwhile, the patient's&nbsp;family&nbsp;has&nbsp;urged harsh disciplinary action against the doctor.

Drunken doctor on duty: Karnataka medico collapses moments before surgery

The Australian government said on Friday (May 19) that an 88-year-old Australian surgeon, Kenneth Elliott, has been freed by terrorist group Al Quaeda-linked jihadists. Elliott and his wife were captured by the jihadists in Burkina Faso in Africa in January 2016. His wife was released three weeks later. The doctor however, was held in captivity for seven years.&nbsp;

Australia's Foreign Minister Penny Wong said that the doctor returned to Australia on Thursday night.&nbsp;

"Dr Elliott is safe and well and has been reunited with his wife Jocelyn and their children," Wong said.

"I am so pleased that his release has been secured and he is safely again with his family."

Family of Dr Kenneth Elliott said that they were relieved at his release. They said that they prayed for others who were still being held.&nbsp;

"We wish to express our thanks to God and all who have continued to pray for us," the family said in a statement.

"At 88 years of age, and after many years away from home, Dr Elliott now needs time and privacy to rest and rebuild strength. We thank you for your understanding and sympathy."

Before they were captured, Dr Elliott and his wife, both from Perth in Western Australia, had run their sole medical clinic in Djibo town in northern Burkina Faso near the Mali border. The couple ran the clinic since 1972. They had also carried out humanitarian work in Mali and Niger.

They were abducted &nbsp;close to Niger border in the intervening night of January 15 and 16, 2016.

At the time, Malian militant group Ansar Dine said that Dr Elliott and his wife were taken by jihadists from the "Emirare of the Sahara". Experts suspect that it is a branch of Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).

Dr Elliott's wife was freed after mediation from Niger.

Confidentiality of patient records with England's National Health Service (NHS) was thrown into question after a woman doctor accessed records of another woman her ex-boyfriend was now dating and shared them, as reported by The Guardian. The doctor was not a caregiver to the woman, which raises questions as to how she could access the data.

The doctor, who reportedly works as a consultant with Addenbrooke's hospital in Cambridge relayed the woman's personal medical information to her ex-boyfriend.&nbsp;

“I felt violated when I learned that this woman, who I didn’t know, had managed to access on a number of occasions details of my life that I had shared with my GP and only my family and very closest friends. It was about something sensitive involving myself and my children, about a family tragedy,” the woman said as quoted by The Guardian.

The news outlet did not reveal the name of the doctor or the name of the woman whose medical records she accessed.

“The doctor said that she had got it from friends, or from people in her choir or parents at my children’s school. That left my sister and I wondering if some of our close friends had betrayed us as we knew that only a few people knew those details. She had an unhealthy interest in us,” the woman was quoted as saying.

“This is an utterly appalling case. It’s an individual problem that the doctor did this. But it’s a systemic problem that they could do it, and that flaws in the way the NHS’s data management systems work meant that any doctor can do something like this to any patient," said Sam Smith, from MecConfidential, a health data privacy group.

“If you’re registered with the NHS in England, this could happen to you.”

Just how the doctor found the woman's medical records was revealed when Addenbrooke carried out a detailed audit at the woman's request. The audit revealed that the doctor had accessed the records no less than seven times last August and September. The doctor first accessed Addenbrooke's own hospital records system.

The doctor then accessed records from a different system and got information about a tragedy and its health impact on one of her children.

Dr Nicola Byrne, the NHS national data guardian for England, termed the doctor's behaviour “absolutely unacceptable”. She added that she was "concerned at the seriousness of the allegations".

How many of us really keep refugees in our thoughts? Dr. Waheed Arian has come a long way from being an Afghan refugee himself to becoming an inspiration to millions.&nbsp;

A humanitarian at heart, he is an emergency doctor with National Health Service (NHS) in the UK, a global philanthropist and an author.&nbsp;

Dr. Waheed spoke with WION and shared his amazing life story, loaded with the harrowing recollections of his childhood spent in Afghanistan during the Soviet conflict, yet brimming with optimism and tenacity.&nbsp;

"I was born into the war during the Afghan-Soviet conflict in the mid-80s. I did not know any other reality except war, hiding in the cellars from the rockets, the bombs, and the shelling. These are the gothic memories I have... seeing soldiers outside tanks and planes in the sky," Dr. Waheed said as if it happened just yesterday.&nbsp;

Millions of refugees are denied basic human rights. Their stories go unheard and unnoticed. With his father in hiding from the military, Dr Waheed as a child would go and visit him every summer in the far-away province of Logar.&nbsp;

His mother would not tell him where they were going and then only once they'd arrived, his father would emerge out of a room suddenly.&nbsp;

These were magical moments for Waheed Arian. Looking back, he thinks of this fond memory and realises that people in conflict areas frequently experience this constant cycle of reunion and loss, which bruise them with traumas.

Waheed just have two happy childhood memories. Once when his mother took him to a local park for ice cream with his cousins and another of his father who once gave him a big kite.&nbsp;

In danger from constant shellings and tanks, Waheed's family decided to migrate to Pakistan as refugees. But the normal borders were closed so they had to take a very dangerous route: the same route used by the mujaheedin to bring in the weapons to fight the government.&nbsp;

Sadly, the family came under the attack three times.&nbsp;

At one time, his father hid him in an oven set in a floor. The spy planes were zooming in. That is when his father hugged him and said, "son if anything happened to me, you would be responsible for looking after our family and to take them back to Kabul."

Recalling that day and the words of his father, Waheed, with a heaviness in his voice, said, "that's when actually I lost my childhood. I knew I was second-in-command. I knew I had a responsibility for my family."

Miraculously, they survived the attack. After that attack, the family arrived in Pakistan and were settled in one of the refugee camps.&nbsp;

Within three months, Waheed was detected with advanced tuberculosis.&nbsp;

But his father's resilience, despite so many adversities, made him healthy again.&nbsp;

His father could not afford toys. He would play doctor and patient with Waheed. Waheed recounted, "He would buy some syringes from the local pharmacy and he would allow me to inject boiled water into his arm. I was pretending that I was a doctor. His arms would turn black and blue because I kept missing the vein but he would let me do that."

"I would not let my son do that to me," he chuckled.&nbsp;

But then two and a half years later, the family went to Afghanistan and in 1996 the Taliban took over and again everything was already destroyed and the economy crumbled even more.&nbsp;

Then in 1999, when Waheed got to the age of 15, his parents felt that he could be asked to serve in military.&nbsp;

"My entire family could not come with me to the West and they sold the house and all the belongings to get enough money to put in the hands of an agent to get me out of Afghanistan. Well, I was sat on a plane in Peshawar city and then I landed in Dubai and from Dubai I landed in Heathrow in London."

<h2>Arriving in UK with $100 in his pocket only to be arrested</h2>

"I was first actually arrested. I was arrested because I did not have the correct documents so I was sent to prison and it was a young offenders institute called Feltham. I was there for two weeks."&nbsp;

But fortunately enough, there was a kind barrister who then fought his corner in the court and said that refugees should not be penalised for the route they take to safety according to the UN Geneva Convention.&nbsp;

"The judge agreed. The charges were dropped and then I started my asylum claim in the UK which was a lengthy process that took two and a half years before I was granted a refugee status."&nbsp;

<h2>Worked during day, studied during night</h2>

First he started working in three jobs which was cleaning, sales and kitchen porter during the day. In night time, he would study.&nbsp;

Along with safety, Waheed knew he also have found opportunities that he never had as a child.&nbsp;

"I was like a child in a candy shop... Now I knew. There is school, there is education. I have to get it all and I was really working extremely hard, day and night.&nbsp;

But things were not all glossy for Dr Waheed in UK as, being separated from family, he struggled with mental health issues: from PTSD to deep anxiety.&nbsp;

"I was suffering from a Post-Traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. I did not know what it was when I was walking in streets of London wherever I would see a red bus they turn into a tank and at night time, I would wake in the middle of the night because I had a nightmares of a sniper taking my head off so I had to open the window to see for myself that I was actually in London not in a war zone."

<h2>The route to Cambridge</h2>

Waheed applied to Cambridge University despite so many people, including his tutor telling him that he was crazy an it was silly of him because Cambridge is not for refugees.&nbsp;

"But I actually felt you know, if the Russian bombs and jets did not kill me, applying for Cambridge would not do any harm. Let's do it."&nbsp;

He got into Cambridge and studied there for three years. Then, he came to Imperial College in London to complete clinical studies and also got a scholarship at Harvard university in 2008.

But in 2009, Waheed hit rock bottom and had a breakdown.&nbsp;

That is when, for the first time, he opened up to his tutor, who gave Waheed a big hug. "I cried on his shoulders."&nbsp;

His tutor told him he cannot back off when he is so close now to becoming a doctor and be able to support his family back in Afghanistan.&nbsp;

"Then I started therapy from my clinical psychologist. Before therapy and even in the war zone, running and exercising kept me going."&nbsp;

Even if we cant see anything hopeful just imagine that one day things will be okay. Number two is to continue dreaming. Its very easy to forget our dreams to forget what we want for our future."

"Another would be to think about compassion, compassion to give to other people. We dont have to have a lot of money. wheather its serving your parents, your neighbours, somebody who is in need... close to you. It could be with your words of kindness. It could be with giving your hand and telling them things are okay. That is giving."

Hospitals across the United Kingdom scrambled to limit the predicted loss of life from the upcoming strikes by the country’s National Health Service (NHS) and are reportedly attempting to retain junior doctors by increasing locum pay. The four-day strike which will witness the participation of tens of thousands of doctors in England next week could affect at least a quarter-million medical appointments, said an NHS official, on Saturday (April 8).&nbsp;

What is the strike about?

The strike planned by the junior doctors would be the latest one in a wave of walkouts by public sector workers who are demanding pay hikes to offset inflation that has exceeded 10 per cent in the UK. The country is also in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis as prices for basic commodities from food to fuel have significantly increased.&nbsp;

This has left many struggling to pay bills as union wages have fallen in real terms over the past decade, across many sectors including healthcare. The four-day walkout by junior doctors will start at 6:59 am (local time) on Tuesday and will continue till 6:59 am (local time), Saturday.&nbsp;

The junior doctors have demanded a 35 per cent pay raise to “reverse the steep decline” they have faced after years of below-inflation pay rises, if granted it would add 20,000 pounds ($24,842) a year to pay packets. They have also sought “full pay restoration” after witnessing a real-term pay cut of 26 per cent since 2008-9, as per the British Medical Association (BMA).

‘Significant’ impact of these strikes sparks concerns

The plan&nbsp;has since sparked fears among NHS leaders and senior clinicians that the strike will lead to the cancellation and postponement of hundreds of thousands of operations and appointments. This has also led hospital trusts to accelerate the discharge of the fittest patients and cancelled the leave for non-striking doctors, reported the Guardian.&nbsp;

“The impact is going to be so significant that this one is likely to impact patient safety, and that is a huge concern for every health care leader,” Dr Layla McCay, policy director at the NHS Confederation told BBC Radio 4. The walkout also follows a three-day strike last month by doctors early in their career that led to 175,000 appointments and procedures being postponed.

Therefore, in a bid to tempt junior doctors whose pay is 14 pounds ($17) an hour, some hospital trusts have increased the rates for locums with one offering up to 50 per cent over the normal locum rate, reported the Guardian citing a rate card sent to staff and posted online by the BMA.&nbsp;

UK hospitals left in a bind after thousands of doctors plan to strike again

People often go through multiple emotions as they feel euphoric, intense and giddy at the same time when they fall in love.

However, a lot of them suffer physical pain too when their heart breaks due to the failure of their relationship or the sudden death of their loved ones.

Experts say that the physical pain one experiences due to heartbreak is very real and actually has a scientific explanation.

According to a report published by Live Science, the painful heartbreaks have a physiological explanation and the symptoms are not only the mind's play, stated Dr Deborah Lee, a medical writer for the Dr Fox Online Pharmacy in England.

"When you fall in love, there is a natural outpouring of hormones. These include the 'cuddle' hormone oxytocin and the 'feel-good' hormone dopamine," Dr Lee said.

"But when you fall out of love, levels of oxytocin and dopamine drop, while at the same time there is an increase in levels of one of the hormones responsible for stress - cortisol," she explained.

According to the doctor, the increased cortisol levels can lead to conditions like weight gain, increased anxiety, high blood pressure and acne.

Social rejection like getting separated from your partner also activates a few parts of the brain which are related to physical pain, she said.

As per the report, in a few cases, the pain due to a broken heart can also be a medical condition called “Takotsubo cardiomyopathy” or the “broken heart syndrome” which is a heart condition that lasts for short-duration triggered by physical or emotional stress.

The condition leads to a change in the way blood is pumped by the heart and sometimes makes the heart pump blood harder, due to which the person experiences chest pain.

Broken heart syndrome's symptoms are similar to that of a heart attack, which makes it difficult for doctors and patients to differentiate between the two.

Orit Strook, of the Religious Zionist party, made the remarks on Sunday saying that her party is drafting legislation that could potentially allow doctors to refuse treatment to LGBTQ people.

She further stated that a doctor could refuse care to a patient if doing so violates his religious beliefs “as long as there are enough other doctors who can give this service”, reports the Times of Israel newspaper.

The bill she was referring to is part of a wider proposed legislation to allow businesses or private enterprises to refuse service on the grounds of religious conscience.

Kan state broadcaster reported that Netanyahu’s Likud party and Religious Zionism have a deal as part of their coalition government that they will pass the new legislation once they assume full control of the office.

However, Netanyahu denied that the coalition deal provided for such a law, and condemned his colleague’s words.

But strictly from Indian perspective, patients are often forced to think that Indian doctors have to complete a mandatory ancient Egyptian language course while learning medicine. This doc writes super-neat prescriptions, and one is now viral

A Bengaluru-based woman was arrested for allegedly killing his 27-year-old fiancé after he leaked her naked photographs online and shared them with his friends.

The victim was identified as Vikash Rajan, a doctor by profession. He completed his MBBS degree from Ukraine.

Rajan was working in southern Bengaluru city before moving from neighbouring Chennai city. Besides his full-time job at a private hospital, he also used to guide students interested in pursuing medicine courses abroad.

He was in a relationship for two years with Pratibha, an architect whom he met through social media.

Later, the two started a live-in relationship and even planned to get married. In fact, both families had agreed to the wedding.

But last week, Rajan was admitted to a hospital with serious injuries. Three days later, he slipped into a coma and died.

The Bengaluru Police had initially filed the case under unnatural death, but as they dug deeper, they encountered a murky revenge plot orchestrated by his fiancée.

During their probe, it was discovered that Rajan was thrashed by her fiancée and her friends, who then admitted him to the hospital.

According to the Deputy Police Commissioner for South East Bengaluru, CK Baba, the woman was enraged after she found her nude pictures on Instagram.

Speaking to the media, Baba said that when Pratibha confronted Rajan, he said that had created a fake ID and posted the pictures "just for fun".

A furious Pratibha then decided to teach him a lesson, police said.

On September 10, Pratibha planned a party with her friends and took Rajan along.

There, the four accused allegedly assaulted the doctor with mops, water bottles and bare hands.

Seeing him fall unconscious, Pratibha then rushed him to the hospital. During her interrogation, the woman said she didn’t intend to kill her husband-to-be.

Following the confession, Pratibha and three of her friends -- Gautham, Sushil and Sunil – were arrested and now face murder charge. All the accused have been sent to judicial custody.

Rudolph claimed that in 2000, after twice coming close to divorcing, they agreed to their marriage while having sex with other people. He claimed that neither Milliron nor his wife had demanded&nbsp;to stop this. 
 
His attorney has claimed that he was not interested in money. When his wife passed away, he was worth $15 million and the insurance settlement went into a trust for their kids.

Attorney General Todd Rokita of Indiana warned Dr Caitlin Bernard that she could face "criminal prosecution and licensure implications" if she didn't submit the required reports on time in a statement that was published online along with a letter to the governor of Indiana.

Rokita continued by saying that he would also check to see if the physician had broken any federal patient privacy regulations. The Indianapolis Star newspaper reported it had obtained documents through public records request showing Bernard had, in fact, complied with the disclosure requirements in a form she filed with the Indiana Department of Health and the Indiana Department of Child Services, making the warning, however, appear to be a hollow threat.

This doctor’s day, let’s celebrate a family whose every member is a doctor for the past hundred years, that is since 1920. Delhi’s Sabbarwal family has more than 150 doctors now. They see this profession as a mission but also challenging at the same time.

He is a successful surgeon today,” says Ankush Sabbarwal.

It is expected that the daughters-in-law of the family will be doctors too and will join the family hospital.

Meet Delhi’s ‘doctor’ family where every member has pursued medical profession since 1920

A landmark report into racism by the British Medical Association (BMA), a professional association and trade union representing and negotiating on behalf of all doctors in the UK has revealed a profession in danger of a major exodus of doctors of ethnic minority backgrounds, due to persistent and intolerable levels of racism faced at a personal and institutional level.&nbsp;

Nearly one-third of doctors surveyed have considered leaving the National Health Service (NHS) or have already left within the past two years due to race discrimination, with 42% of Black and 41% of Asian doctors, in particular, having considered leaving or having left.

As quoted by The Guardian, Prof Anton Emmanuel, the head of workforce race equality standard at NHS England, says, “No one should experience racism, discrimination or prejudice at work, it is completely unacceptable and NHS organisations should take a zero-tolerance approach to all and any form of discrimination.”

Emmanuel said “decisive actions” had recently been taken to address inequalities in the NHS and progress was being made, but he also conceded that “we know there is still more work to do”.

Ma Sang-hyuk, the vice-president of Korean Vaccine Society, made these comments in a Facebook post, which was widely shared on social media.

“The adults who have not yet been infected with COVID-19 are those who have interpersonal problems,” he said.

The doctor reportedly deleted the post on March 16, claiming his words were meant to be ‘metaphorical’ and had been misunderstood, news site Daily reports.

“It emphasized how difficult it is for anyone to avoid the virus in a situation where there is a high rate of confirmed cases in the area,” he was quoted as saying.

The remarks were made on the day South Korea recorded 400,741 new Covid cases.

“The surgeries were performed between 6 a.m and 10.30 p.m. continuously for 16-and-a-half hours on February 25. All the patients are doing fine now after a week of observation,” he said.

“I am happy at having performed so many surgeries at one go and hope that this would inspire more younger surgeons to work for excellence and public welfare.”

The doctor has written to the Limca Book of Records, informing them of the accomplishment and providing the necessary documentation.

Previously, in October 2011, then-Brigadier (Dr) J.K.S Parihar of the Army Hospital Research and Referral in New Delhi performed 34 phacoemulsification procedures in eastern Ladakh, earning him a position in the Limca Book of Records.

Critics say allegations of communism -- known locally as "red-tagging" -- have been used to discredit and detain activists, journalists, lawyers and dissidents.&nbsp;

While the practice is not new in the&nbsp;Philippines, it has intensified under President Rodrigo Duterte, according to rights groups.&nbsp;

More than 1,400 Turkish doctors left their posts to work abroad last year, and 4,000 over the past decade, according to the Turkish Medical Association, the largest association of medical professionals in the country. Many more are preparing applications and have requested certificates of good standing from the organisation, officials said.

“This is a result of long-accumulating issues,” said Bulent Kilic, a professor of public health at Dokuz Eylul University in the western city of Izmir. “In the last 20 years, there have been serious changes in the name of reform, and I think the heavy workload in the pandemic was the final straw.”

For a long time, the changes that Erdogan introduced bore fruit. Turkey has long prided itself on the quality of its medical schools and its medical professionals, and in recent years, it has developed a thriving private health industry catering to thousands of international as well as Turkish patients. Fifteen new large city hospitals were built to expand the health service while access was broadened for the public.

The health minister recently praised the president’s foresight, saying the system held up well during the worst days of the pandemic and facilities were never overwhelmed.

But the system is no doubt stressed, leaving doctors feeling overburdened and underpaid. The steady erosion of their income and status has been too much for many doctors to bear.

“Three years ago, I would have said the salary was fair, but now it is not,” said Dr. Furkan Cagri Koral, 26, a junior doctor who left Turkey only two years after graduating. “Doctors in Turkey are working at the level of slave labor considering the workload and the risks they are taking.”

He went to Germany, where, after 11 months of language training, he found a job as an assistant doctor in the town of Chemnitz and is preparing to take an equivalency exam that will allow him to practice. Koral said he was already encouraging colleagues and his sister, a medical student, to follow suit.

“It is not only low salaries” driving health professionals away, said Dr. Sebnem Korur Fincanci, the chairwoman of the Turkish Medical Association. “It is the devaluation of the profession, over many years, since the beginning of the rule of the AKP,” she said, referring to Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party.

The opening up of access to all hospitals on demand, without a referral system, overloaded them, while hospitals were encouraged to raise patient numbers and financial returns. At the same time, Fincanci said, Erdogan embraced a policy of privatisation of health care and a performance pay system that has led to a focus on quantity rather than quality.

“There were too many appointments, too many operations, some not necessary,” she said. Patients were happy at first, but the open-access system was not sustainable. Hospitals began raising their prices and shortening appointments. A centralized system allows only 10 minutes for appointments, and in some cases only 5 minutes, which creates tensions all around.

Violence against medical professionals has risen sharply in the past two years — mostly in emergency departments — often in an explosion of anger at the system. More than 13,000 health professionals lodged complaints that they had been subjected to violence at work in 2020, according to the Turkish Medical Association.

“People are not tolerant enough,” Fincanci said.

“Since they are unhappy in their workplace and houses, and values are deteriorating, violence becomes a problem,” she added.

Other issues, including gender discrimination, nepotism and cronyism in management and an increase in lawsuits against medical practitioners, have made doctors lose hope, she said.

“They do not think the situation will change,” Fincanci said. “It is not only the health system, but the general environment.”

There are ways to remedy the health system, Kilic, of Dokuz Eylul University, said, including raising budgetary expenditure on health and increasing the proportion of spending on preventive care. Turks also need to be weaned off their high level of visits to hospitals and use of tests, he added.

But retaining doctors and other medical personnel is equally vital, he said, because Turkey has a far lower level of trained professionals in proportion to its population than most European countries.

Erdogan and Dr. Fahrettin Koca, Turkey’s health minister, have both acknowledged the problem of Turkey’s brain drain but have offered little practical respite. “Don’t forget, our physicians are the best-trained physicians, and the richest countries have their eyes on them,” Koca told Parliament in a speech in December.

Parliament recently raised the penalties for violence committed against health workers, and Koca appealed to the assembly in December to consider salaries and other rights of health sector workers.

For Dr. Dogan Can Celik, 29, who works at a public hospital in Istanbul, it is not enough. He is planning to leave for Britain as soon as he completes his residency in about six months.

“I love my country, and especially Istanbul, but in the last four years, it really changed,” he said. He said the working hours and poor remuneration were his main reasons for leaving. “When I see our professors and mentors, I think I don’t want to be in their situation because after 40 years as a professor, they get really low salaries.”

Unlike previous waves of Turkish workers heading to Europe, those emigrating these days have little intention of returning and are leaving to give their children better opportunities, according to several people working in the business of relocating doctors.

Ekin Ay set up a business teaching medical German to Turkish doctors five years ago and has seen demand double in the past two years. One-fifth of her students are over 40, and some are over 50, she said. “They are not leaving for economic reasons but because of their families,” she said.

Dr. Cemal Altuntas moved to Germany three years ago and plans to start working full time as a consultant for relocating doctors. He said there had been a huge increase in requests from doctors in the past six months.

“It’s not a luxurious life that we want,” he said. “We want the normal life that we deserve.”

Bhushan, in a letter to states and UTs, also said that the personnel, who are to be deployed in election duty in the poll-bound states, will also be included in the category of frontline workers. &nbsp;

20-year-old Evie Toombes, who sued mom's doctor for allowing her to be born, wins millions

Hundreds of victims of a disgraced Canadian fertility doctor, including more than a dozen children conceived using his sperm, are set to share a proposed C$13.375 million ($10 million)&nbsp;class-action settlement.

For decades, Barwin has been a highly sought after fertility doctor dubbed “Baby God” for his success rate. He has even been awarded the Order of Canada.

However, some four decades ago, couples began to question his methodology.

It started in 1989 when Davina and David Dixon sought Barwin’s help to conceive.&nbsp;

They grew suspicious after their daughter, Rebecca did not resemble her parents.&nbsp;

When she developed celiac disease, even after nobody else in the family suffering from the illness, her parents approached Barwin for a DNA sample.

The doctor refused to comply. &nbsp;However, the Dixons managed to compare Rebecca’s DNA with that of another of Barwin’s patients.

They found a match. At 25, she learned that Barwin was her biological father.

Dixon told the Ottawa Citizen in 2019, "I was in shock. Something inside me shifted. It made me feel like my existence was something to be ashamed of".

Barwin is alleged to have told couples that the male partner’s sperm would be used.&nbsp;

Instead, they were unknowingly given random samples. Also, in some cases, it was Barwin’s own sperm being used. Barwin did not notify his patients of the errors.

Under the proposed settlement, former patients and children will be eligible for up to C$50,000 in damages. Also, a judge must approve the settlement before any money is made available.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario suspended Barwin in 2013 after he admitted to inseminating four women using the wrong sperm.&nbsp;

Also, he resigned his medical licence in 2014.

Hundreds of victims of a disgraced Canadian fertility doctor, including more than a dozen children conceived using his sperm, are set to share a proposed C$13.375 million ($10 million) class-action settlement. For decades, Barwin has been a highly sought after fertility doctor dubbed “Baby God” for his success rate. He has even been awarded the Order of Canada. However, some four decades ago, couples began to question his methodology. It started in 1989 when Davina and David Dixon sought Barwin’s help to conceive. They grew suspicious after their daughter, Rebecca did not resemble her parents. When she developed celiac disease, even after nobody else in the family suffering from the illness, her parents approached Barwin for a DNA sample. The doctor refused to comply. However, the Dixons managed to compare Rebecca’s DNA with that of another of Barwin’s patients. They found a match. At 25, she learned that Barwin was her biological father. It made me feel like my existence was something to be ashamed of". Barwin is alleged to have told couples that the male partner’s sperm would be used. Instead, they were unknowingly given random samples. Also, in some cases, it was Barwin’s own sperm being used. Barwin did not notify his patients of the errors. Under the proposed settlement, former patients and children will be eligible for up to C$50,000 in damages. Also, a judge must approve the settlement before any money is made available. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario suspended Barwin in 2013 after he admitted to inseminating four women using the wrong sperm. Also, he resigned his medical licence in 2014.
