Most cancer patients die of lung cancer in the world, accounting for around 1.8 million deaths every year. The results were obtained in a late-stage study led by Yale University and were presented at the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (Asco) in Chicago.<br />

“Thirty years ago, there was nothing we could do for these patients,” stated Dr Roy Herbst, Yale Cancer Centre's deputy director and lead author of the study.<br />

“Now we have this potent drug. Fifty per cent is a big deal in any disease, but certainly in a disease like lung cancer, which has typically been very resistant to therapies,” he added.</p>

There are rock and tree ledges in the first 400 metres before the 1500 metres straight down descent which can become difficult to negotiate.&nbsp;</p>

This comes as data says the US has reported a huge increase in the number of gun violence cases this year.&nbsp;However, the study warns that the pandemic was an added pressure for the American youth. The isolation in American children which was fueled by the pandemic 'poured fuel on a fire'.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As far as the Covid mortality rate is concerned, in 2020, it accounted for 0.24 deaths per 100,000 for individuals aged between 1 to 19 years. But the massive surge in injury deaths was 12 times higher at 2.80 deaths per 100,000.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"For decades, the overall death rate among US children has fallen steadily, thanks to breakthroughs in prevention and treatment of diseases like premature births, pediatric cancer and birth defects," he said adding, "We now see a dramatic reversal of this trajectory, meaning that our children are now less likely to reach adulthood. This is a red flashing light. We need to understand the causes and address them immediately to protect our children."</p>

<p>A captive-bred cheetah named Sasha passed away in March from kidney failure that she had been suffering from ever since she was brought to India. She started showing signs of weakness and exhaustion on January 23, at which point authorities tranquillised her and sent her to a quarantine area where she would receive care.</p>

<p>The second Cheetah, Uday, was discovered sick in the national park in April and passed away while receiving treatment.</p>

<p>According to the ministry, the cheetahs would be permitted to leave KNP and won't necessarily be recaptured unless they venture into areas where they are in significant danger.</p>

<h2><strong>India's&nbsp;cheetah reintroduction operation</strong></h2>

<p>Four of the eight cheetahs that were brought over from Namibia have so far been freed from their caged acclimatisation camps and placed in the KNP's free-range habitat.</p>

<p>In September 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi released eight cheetahs that had been brought in from Namibia into a special enclosure at the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh.</p>

<p>As part of the cheetah reintroduction operation, the cheetahs were flown in a special jet from Namibia to Gwalior. Later, two Indian Air Force helicopters transported the animals to the national park.</p>

<p>In February, 12 additional cheetahs arrived in India from South Africa. The second group of cheetahs arrived at the Air Force base in Gwalior before being sent to Kuno National Park.</p>

<h2><strong>Cheetah went extinct in India in 1952</strong></h2>

<p>In the majority of countries, cheetah numbers are dropping. South Africa is an exception to this trend because there is no more space for the cats there.</p>

<p>These majestic animals, known as "the smallest of the big cats," can reportedly outrun the fastest Yamaha bike. Due to intensive poaching during the time before independence, they became extinct in India in 1952. In 1948, a cheetah was last seen in the Sal forests of Chhattisgarh's Koriya district.<br />

<p>“He started screaming in an aggressive manner,” Vazquez said. “He said he had no food, he had no drink, that he was tired and doesn’t care if he goes to jail. He started screaming all these things, took off his jacket, a black jacket that he had, and threw it on the ground," Vazquez added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Triggered by the ranting, the passenger pushed Neely onto the ground and held him in a deadly chokehold for about 15 minutes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Journalist Vazquez recorded the incident in a three-and-half-minute-long&nbsp;video.</p>

<p>At this point, the train was stopped and the doors were opened at the Broadway-Lafayette Street/Bleeker Street station.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The journalist said that the conductor had called 911 to report the incident. When the Emergency Medical Services Workers arrived at the site of the incident, they tried to revive Neely but failed to do so.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Citing sources, reports said that the investigation is underway and an autopsy is awaited before any conclusion is reached.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“He moved his arms but he couldn’t express anything,” Vazquez said of Neely. “All he could do was move (his) arms."&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Then suddenly he just stopped moving,” Vazquez recalled. “He was out of strength.”</p>

<p>A 69-year-old American died while trekking Nepal’s Himalayan mountains, making it the fourth fatality on the world's highest peak this climbing season.</p>

<p>Jonathan Sugarman died during his acclimatisation rotation at around 6,400m on Monday, Mohan Kafle, manager of the expedition organiser Beyul Adventure, told the Himalayan Times newspaper.</p>

<p>According to reports, the Seattle-based medical doctor suddenly felt unwell at Camp II and breathed his last. The exact cause of his death is unclear.</p>

<p>He was a part of the expedition handled by International Mountain Guides (IMG), a Washington-based company. Beyul Adventure locally manages the IMG expedition.</p>

<p>The US Embassy in Nepal confirmed the death of Sugarman in a statement on Tuesday but did not offer additional details.</p>

<p>"Our deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends," it said. "The Embassy is in contact with Dr Sugarman’s family and with local authorities."</p>

<p>IMG’s owner Eric Simonson, too, in a statement declined to offer additional details.</p>

<p>"We can confirm that this event was not the result of a climbing accident or route condition that would be of potential impact or safety concern to any other teams on the mountain," Simonson said in a statement on the company's website.</p>

<p>This is not the first time he tried to scale the Everest. Last year, Sugarman reached Camp 3 on Everest before abandoning a climb, according to AFP news agency.</p>

<p>Mount Everest, a peak in the Himalayan mountain range, is the highest point on Earth at nearly 30,000 feet above sea level.</p>

<p>This year, Nepal has issued 466 permits to foreign climbers. The climbing season runs until early June.</p>

<p>This is the fourth death on the Everest this season. Last year, three climbers died in an avalanche in the Khumbu icefall on May 12.</p>

<p>About 1.5 km (0.9 miles) from where he was last seen, the two crocodiles, which were 4.1m&nbsp;(13.4 ft) and 2.8m in length, were shot and killed on Monday (April 1).</p>

<p>Despite the fact that only one of the reptiles contained human remains, wildlife officers are convinced that both were present during the incident.</p>

<p>The fishermen with&nbsp;Darmody at the time did not witness&nbsp;the attack but reported hearing him shout, followed by a loud splash.</p>

<p>I raced down… but there was no sign of him, just his thongs [flip-flops] on the bank and nothing else," his friend John Peiti&nbsp;told the Cape York Weekly.</p>

<p>“Staff tried to help the man and followed all emergency procedures but it became apparent that outside assistance was needed.</p>

<p>“Fire crew, mountain rescue, cave rescue, paramedics and Kong staff then worked to extricate the casualty, who was taken to Carlisle hospital for further treatment.”</p>

<p>At the scene were members of the police, Cumbria Fire and Rescue, Keswick Mountain Rescue, Cumbria Ore Mines Rescue Unit, Great North Air Ambulance, and the North West Ambulance Service's Hazardous Area Response Team.</p>

<p>Parts of the climbing wall were dismantled with the assistance of staff and other visitors to make way for the caving tunnels.</p>

<p>O'Keeffe was transferred to the Cumberland Infirmary's intensive care unit in Carlisle with "crush injuries" after being rescued.</p>

<p>He died&nbsp;from multiple-organ failure, according to a Facebook post by his older sister, Olivia Short. She paid tribute to her “beautiful, intelligent, fascinating brother”.</p>

<p>“At 3 pm today I sat with Carl and said goodbye forever.&nbsp;He was my baby brother and over the last few years became my best friend,”&nbsp;Short wrote on Sunday.</p>

<p>Short, who was beside her brother in the hospital, continued: “It became apparent that the injuries were severe and he would not be able to survive. He was then moved to a private room and I was able to stay with him so that he could die with some dignity."</p>

<p>“I’m broken-hearted,” she said. “As are the rest of our family.”</p>

<p>Meanwhile, a&nbsp;Cumberland Council spokesperson told Mirror that the incident is being investigated.</p>

<p>“We have been notified of an incident that took place at the Kong Adventure Centre, Keswick, and are investigating the matter, as the regulating body."</p>

<p>The tragedy was reported in various villages such as Lakshmipur, Paharpur, and Harsiddhi. They all fall under Motihari district, which is around 150 kilometres northwest of the state capital Patna.</p>

<p>The incident was first reported on Friday evening in Lakshmipur. Local news reported that&nbsp;12 others have also complained of serious health issues and were rushed to a hospital.</p>

<p>According to local media reports, a special team of the Prohibition Unit from Patna has been despatched to Motihari to investigate the matter. The special team consists of five police officers,&nbsp;two DSPs and three inspectors.</p>

<p>Seven persons have been detained by the police as part of the investigation into the incident, a Bihar police headquarters statement said here.</p>

<p>Four deceased have been identified as Tuntun Singh (35), Bhutan Manjhi (40), Chotu Paswan (25) and Ashok Paswan (45), the police said.</p>

<p>"The district police are investigating the matter and trying to ascertain those involved in the illegal liquor trade. Excise department officials are also probing the incident,"&nbsp;the Bihar police report said.</p>

<p>Responding to the incident, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said, "It is a sad incident. I have asked for all information on it."&nbsp;</p>

<p>In 2016, the state government enacted the&nbsp;Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act,&nbsp;after massive protests by women and social activists to ban all types of alcohol in the state. In implementing this rule, Bihar became the second dry state in India after Gujarat—where India's founding father&nbsp;Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi's hometown&nbsp;Porbandar is located.</p>

<p>The two sisters – Maia (20) and Rina Dee (15) – who also British citizenships, were killed on Friday after a suspected Palestinian gunman shot at their car. The mother of the two sisters was also present in the car and had suffered critical injuries and was in a coma.</p>

India reports over 1,000 new Covid cases for first time in 129 days

<p>Three hospital workers and seven US police officers are facing charges of second-degree murder in a Black inmate's death at a psychiatric hospital in Virginia, announced the case prosecutor on Thursday.</p>

<p>Irvo Otieno, aged 28, died on March 6 at Central State Hospital in Petersburg where he was transferred from a local prison due to his mental condition.</p>

<p>According to the results of the preliminary autopsy, Otieno died of asphyxiation while being "physically restrained”, said Dinwiddie County District Attorney Ann Cabell Baskervill in a statement.</p>

<p>Video footage of the death of Otieno was shown to his family on Thursday.</p>

<p>Though Otieno "was going through mental illness, what I saw today was heartbreaking," said his mother Caroline Ouko in a press conference.</p>

<p>She stated the video shows "seven officers on one man," and that it "goes on and on."</p>

<p>“What I saw today was heartbreaking, America. It was disturbing. It was traumatic. My son was tortured. My son was treated like a dog, worse than a dog. I saw it with my own eyes... they smothered my baby," she added.</p>

<p>The family have hired Ben Crump who is a high-profile lawyer and is known for fighting cases which involve violence carried out against African Americans by police officials.</p>

<p>Speaking to the media, Crump said that the police had handcuffed Otieno and had his ankles shackled, and he was pinned down for 12 minutes by seven police officers.</p>

<p>“It is truly shocking that nearly three years after the brutal killing of George Floyd by police, another family is grieving a loved one who allegedly died in nearly the exact same manner — being pinned down by police for 12 agonising minutes,” said Crump in a statement.</p>

<p>The video is a “commentary on how inhumane law enforcement officials treat people who are having a mental health crisis as criminals rather than treating them as people who are in need of help,” he stated.</p>

<p>“He, in the videos, (is) never confrontational with them. He is not posing a threat to them. He’s not violent or aggressive with them. You see in the video he is restrained with handcuffs, he has leg irons on, and you see in the majority of the video that he seems to be in between lifelessness and unconsciousness, but yet you see him being restrained so brutally with a knee on his neck,” Crump said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“You can see that they’re putting their back into it. Every part of his body is being pushed down with absolute brutality,” he stated.</p>

<p>On March 3, police first took Otieno into custody. The police department stated that the officers encountered Otieno while looking into the complaint of a possible burglary in suburban Richmond and that based on his behaviour, they kept him under an emergency custody order and took him to a local hospital for evaluation.</p>

<p>“The degree of risk was not modest,” said Dr Stanley Hazen, the study's lead author and director of the Centre for Cardiovascular Diagnostics and Prevention at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute.</p>

<p>People who already have the risk of heart disease are twice as likely to suffer a stroke or heart attack if erythritol is present in high amounts in their blood, claimed the study, published in the journal Nature Medicine.</p>

<p>“If your blood level of erythritol was in the top 25 per cent compared to the bottom 25 per cent, there was about a two-fold higher risk for heart attack and stroke. It’s on par with the strongest of cardiac risk factors, like diabetes,” said Hazen.</p>

<p>In the paper, the additional lab and animal research discovered that erythritol causes blood platelets to clot more easily. These blood clots can break off and move towards the heart, causing a heart attack, or enter the brain, leading to a stroke.</p>

<p>“This certainly sounds an alarm. There appears to be a clotting risk from using erythritol," said Dr Andrew Freeman, the Director of cardiovascular prevention and wellness at National Jewish Health, Denver.&nbsp; "Obviously, more research is needed, but in an abundance of caution, it might make sense to limit erythritol in your diet for now.”</p>

<p><strong>What is sweetener erythritol?</strong></p>

<p>Erythritol is a sugar alcohol just like sorbitol and xylitol. It is found in various vegetables and fruits and has around 70 per cent of the sweetness of sugar and is said to be zero-calorie.</p>

<p>It is manufactured artificially in massive quantities and it does not increase blood sugar and carries comparatively less laxative effect compared to other sugar alcohols.</p>

Erythritol, a popular sugar replacement which is used to sweeten monk fruit, keto-reduced sugar products and stevia, has been linked to heart attack, stroke, blood clotting and death, as per a new study. “The degree of risk was not modest,” said Dr Stanley Hazen, the study's lead author and director of the Centre for Cardiovascular Diagnostics and Prevention at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute. People who already have the risk of heart disease are twice as likely to suffer a stroke or heart attack if erythritol is present in high amounts in their blood, claimed the study, published in the journal Nature Medicine. Symptoms and link to long Covid “If your blood level of erythritol was in the top 25 per cent compared to the bottom 25 per cent, there was about a two-fold higher risk for heart attack and stroke. It’s on par with the strongest of cardiac risk factors, like diabetes,” said Hazen. In the paper, the additional lab and animal research discovered that erythritol causes blood platelets to clot more easily. These blood clots can break off and move towards the heart, causing a heart attack, or enter the brain, leading to a stroke. “This certainly sounds an alarm. There appears to be a clotting risk from using erythritol," said Dr Andrew Freeman, the Director of cardiovascular prevention and wellness at National Jewish Health, Denver. "Obviously, more research is needed, but in an abundance of caution, it might make sense to limit erythritol in your diet for now.” What is sweetener erythritol? Erythritol is a sugar alcohol just like sorbitol and xylitol. It is found in various vegetables and fruits and has around 70 per cent of the sweetness of sugar and is said to be zero-calorie. It is manufactured artificially in massive quantities and it does not increase blood sugar and carries comparatively less laxative effect compared to other sugar alcohols. <p>The first outbreak of avian influenza A (H5N1) virus in humans occurred in Hong Kong in 1997. Till that year, the cases of bird flu were not taken to be posing a major threat. The 1997 outbreak was put to an end by a carrying out a massive culling of over 1.5 million chickens.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Even though many of these cases are a result of direct touch with infected poultry, it must be noted that the nature of influenza viruses are constantly evolving. With this, there are concerns if the virus could evolve to spread more easily between people.</p>

<p>The newly reported case is from the rural southeastern province of Prey Veng. The girl fell sick on February 16 and was taken to a Phnom Penh hospital.&nbsp;Later on Wednesday, she was diagnosed with a fever of up to 39 Celsius (102 Fahrenheit) along with other symptoms including coughing and throat pain. Soon, she was declared dead, the news agency said quoting country's health ministry.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Medical officials took samples from a dead wild bird at a conservation area near the girl's home to understand the virus better. The ministry said teams in the area would be cautioning residents about touching dead and sick birds. As per WHO, Cambodia had 56 human cases of H5N1 from 2003 through 2014 and 37 of them were fatal.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier this month,&nbsp;WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus flagged concern about avian influenza infections in mammals.&nbsp;"H5N1 has spread widely in wild birds and poultry for 25 years, but the recent spillover to mammals needs to be monitored closely," he had said.</p>
