More than half a million people were killed due to dirty air in the European Union in 2021, as per estimates, and around half of the deaths may have been avoided by decreasing pollution to the limits recommended by doctors. 
 
The European Environment Agency's researchers attributed 253,000 early deaths to concentrations of fine particles called PM2.5 which breached the maximum guideline limits of the World Health Organization, set at 5µg/m3. 
 
Meanwhile, more than 52,000 deaths were caused by excessive levels of nitrogen dioxide and 22,000 deaths took place due to short-term exposure to increasing levels of ozone. 
 
“The figures released today by the EEA remind us that air pollution is still the number one environmental health problem in the EU,” said Virginijus Sinkevičius, the EU’s environment commissioner, reported The Guardian.

The WHO, which tightened the guidelines for air quality in 2021, stated that it is not possible to consider any level of air pollution as safe but added that they have established upper limits for certain pollutants.

<h2>Need to bring pollution levels down: Experts</h2>

In September, the European Parliament voted to align the air quality rules of the EU with the WHO's, however, decided to delay doing so until 2035. 
 
“The good news is that clean air policy works, and our air quality is improving. But we need to do better still, and bring pollution levels down further,” said Sinkevicius.

India's High Commissioner to Canada Sanjay Kumar Verma has asked Canada for evidence that would support allegations made against India that it is involved in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. In an interview with&nbsp;Canadian platform The Globe and Mail on Friday (Nov 3), Verma said, "There is no specific or relevant information provided in this case for us to assist them in the investigation."

"Where is the evidence? Where is the conclusion of the investigation? I would go a step further and say now the investigation has already been tainted. A direction has come from someone at a high level to say India or Indian agents are behind it," the envoy added.&nbsp;

The Indian envoy's call for evidence comes in response to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's allegations leveled against India in September where he said that agents of the Indian government are involved in Nijjar's killing.

The country also retaliated by expelling a Canadian diplomat when Ottawa removed a top Indian diplomat - Senior Punjab cadre IPS officer Pavan Kumar Rai, the head of Indian intelligence in Canada.&nbsp;

Kazakhstan held nationwide mourning on Sunday after 45 people died in a blaze at an ArcelorMittal mine, the worst accident in the Central Asian country's post-Soviet history.

The tragedy, which struck at the Kostenko coal mine in the Karaganda region Saturday, came after a series of deadly incidents at ArcelorMittal mines and has prompted the nationalisation of the company's local affiliate.&nbsp;

"As of 3 pm (0900 GMT) the bodies of 42 people were found," Kazakhstan's emergency services said on social media.&nbsp;

<h2>The search for one miner&nbsp;continues</h2>

Later, authorities said the bodies of three others had been found and rescuers were searching for the last miner missing, with little hope of finding him alive.&nbsp;

Rescuers earlier warned that chances of finding the remaining miners alive were "very low", due to the lack of ventilation and the force of Saturday's explosion, which spread over two kilometres (1.2 miles).

The previous deadliest mine accident in post-Soviet Kazakhstan occurred in 2006, killing 41 miners at another ArcelorMittal site. It came just two months after another incident killed five miners.&nbsp;

Anger and disbelief reigned after the disaster&nbsp;in Karaganda, central Kazakhstan.

"Every miner is a hero, because when he goes down, he does not know if he will come back or not," said former miner Sergei Glazkov.&nbsp;

Many welcomed the government's move towards nationalisation, angered by the company's safety record.&nbsp;

Daniar Mustafin, a 42-year-old salesman, said he favoured "full nationalisation without material compensation for the current owners".

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has ordered cooperation with the Luxembourg-based company to be "brought to an end."

In a statement on its Kazakh website, ArcelorMittal said its thoughts were with the families of those who lost loved ones.

"We understand that there is no adequate compensation for their losses, but we will do everything in our power to support them in the coming weeks and months", it said.

"ArcelorMittal has owned these mines in Kazakhstan since 1995. Unfortunately their operation poses a high safety risk due to the complicated geology, which has resulted in a number of deadly accidents over the past two years", it said.

Speaking to victims' relatives at the mine, Tokayev called ArcelorMittal "the worst enterprise in Kazakhstan's history in terms of cooperation with the government".

The Kazakh government and the steel giant announced a preliminary agreement to "transfer ownership of the (local) firm in favour of the Republic of Kazakhstan", Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov stated.

In its statement, ArcelorMittal said that the previous week, "the two parties... signed a preliminary agreement" to transfer ownership of the mine to Kazakhstan.

On Sunday, flags were at half-mast to mark the day of national mourning declared by Tokayev, an AFP correspondent saw.

Since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, about 200 miners have died in Kazakhstan, the vast majority at ArcelorMittal sites.&nbsp;

<h2>&nbsp;'His guardian angel saved him'&nbsp;</h2>

There were 252 people inside the mine when the fire started, ArcelorMittal said.&nbsp;

Outside a hospital in Karaganda, relatives of those who had survived the blast were thanking the heavens. &nbsp;

"His guardian angel saved him. He is alive," said Nikolai Bralin, the brother of an injured miner.&nbsp;

"Two of his ribs were slightly torn apart from the blow and he had surgery to put them back in place," he added.&nbsp;

ArcelorMittal's arrival in Kazakhstan in 1995 was initially seen as a beacon of hope during the economic slump that followed the fall of communism.&nbsp;

But a lack of investment and inadequate safety standards were repeatedly criticised by the authorities, while trade unions called for tighter government control.&nbsp;

ArcelorMittal, led by Indian businessman Lakshmi Mittal, operates some 15 factories and mines in the centre of the former Soviet republic.

The 36-year-old Elaheh Mohammadi received a six-year prison sentence for her alleged collaboration with the United States. The 31-year-old Niloufar Hamedi was handed a seven-year term for the same offense.&nbsp;

Two women Iranian journalists sentenced to jail for reporting on Mahsa Amini's death

A fourth-year student at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Kharagpur in the state of West Bengal was found dead in the campus hostel on Tuesday (Oct 17), with police authorities suspecting it to be a case of suicide, local media reports said.&nbsp;The student was identified as K Kiran Chandra, a 21-year-old hailing from Telangana. Chandra was pursuing his studies in the electrical engineering department at IIT-Kharagpur.

Indian Express while citing sources within the institute, said that Chandra's lifeless body was found by his hostel mates. Swift action was taken, and the report said that he was immediately rushed to the hospital located inside the institute campus. However, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.&nbsp;

He was a boarder of the Lal Bahadur Shastri (LBS) Hall of Residence and chose the path of self-harm on the night of 17th October 2023."

IIT-Kharagpur fourth-year student's suspected suicide shocks campus, probe on

Sergio Brown, former NFL player, has been arrested in Southern California in relation to the death of his mother, authorities said. The arrest took place after&nbsp;he tried to re-enter the United States from Mexico only few weeks after the 73-year-old woman was found dead behind her suburban Chicago home. The 35-year-old&nbsp;was detained on Tuesday afternoon and booked into San Diego County Jail without bail after a "fugitive arrest," records reveal.

During a court hearing on Wednesday (Oct 11), Brown agreed to be extradited to Illinois, the San Diego District Attorney's office spokesperson Steve Walker told The Associated Press via email.

The search for Brown began soon after his mother Myrtle Brown's death. Her body was&nbsp;found on Sep 16 near a creek in Maywood. Since then, relatives had mentioned that they could not find Myrtle as well as Sergio. Later, a&nbsp;medical examiner ruled her death a homicide and revealed that she had sustained injuries during an assault.

Following this, Sergio had gone missing as police shifted focus towards his whereabouts. During this time, a video on Instagram appeared where a man resembling Brown called Myrtle's death "fake news".&nbsp;

Soon, another video surfaced on his Instagram story where the man took a leaf from the film&nbsp;"Finding Nemo," repeating its iconic line, "Just keep swimming, just keep swimming," the Chicago Tribune reported.

Brown, who graduated from Proviso East High School in Maywood, played college football for Notre Dame before his NFL stint.&nbsp;In the NFL, he represented the likes of New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars and Buffalo Bills from 2010-2016.&nbsp;

Former NFL player Sergio Brown arrested in connection with his mother's death

Yossi Landau has spent decades collecting corpses in Israel, but he almost reached breaking point recovering the remains of people killed by Hamas militants from Gaza in the country's deadliest assault.

Landau woke to the sounds of sirens on Saturday, a moment he had become "used to" as Israelis took shelter from incoming rocket fire.

It was not until later that he realised the launches were "only a cover up, because the main part is the invasion" by Hamas militants, who swept across the Gaza border to kill an estimated 1,200 people.

From his home in Ashdod, a coastal city north of Gaza, he recalled seeing "the horror" as he rushed to the scene.

"I saw cars turned over, I saw people on the street dead," Landau said in Sderot, a town near the border where multiple residents were killed.

He has 33 years of experience volunteering for Zaka, an organisation which recovers the bodies of people who suffered unnatural deaths.

But as gunfights raged between Palestinian militants and Israeli forces, Landau said he witnessed violence he had never seen before.

"A piece of road that should've taken 15 minutes, it took us 11 hours because we went and picked up everyone, put them in a bag," said the 55-year-old.

Abandoned cars which were torched or riddled with bullet holes still litter the landscape of southern Israel.

After already loading dozens of corpses onto refrigerated trucks, Landau and fellow volunteers reached Beeri, a kibbutz of around 1,200 residents five kilometres (three miles) from Gaza.

"I felt that I'm falling apart, not only me, my whole crew," he recalled, after entering the first home and finding a dead woman.

"Her stomach was ripped open, a baby was there, still connected with the cord, and stabbed," said Landau.

The Zaka volunteer said he saw multiple civilians, including around 20 children, who had their hands tied behind their backs before being shot and torched.

"We saw some victims positioned that they were sexually abused," he added.

<h2>Stricken festival site</h2>

More than 100 people were killed in the kibbutz, while around 270 were left dead at the nearby Supernova music festival.

While the bodies of the revellers have been removed from the site, their belongings were left strewn across the dusty grass.

When an AFP journalist visited on Thursday, beanbags, artworks and a bag of energy drinks were among the possessions on the ground as soldiers walked by.

Blood splattered the inside of a car, not far from a sign detailing hiking routes through the forest.

Although Israel said it has retaken control of the border area, the army still reports firefights with holdout militants.

The military announced soldiers had "killed a terrorist" around a kibbutz a few kilometres away from the festival grounds on Thursday, soon after distant gunfire was heard from the site.

In response to the Hamas assault, Israel has so far hit Gaza with 6,000 bombs according to military figures.

The strikes have killed 1,417 Gazans, according to health officials in the Palestinian territory.

Confronting with the scale of violence, Landau said he doesn't "feel anything right now."

"We just take our feelings, with our job, and we separate it. And that's what we have to do," he said.

Hoffner had apparently died in her sleep on Sunday night, her close friend Joe Conant told AP news agency on Tuesday (Oct 10).

"She was indefatigable. She just kept going," he said, adding, "she was not someone who would take naps in the afternoon, or not show up for any function, dinner or anything else. She was always there, fully present. She kept going, always."

On October 1, Hoffner jumped off from a plane from 13,500 feet at Skydive Chicago in Ottawa, Illinois, 85 miles southwest of Chicago.

<h2>'Working to ensure her name is entered posthumously'&nbsp;</h2>

Conant said he was working through paperwork to ensure that Guinness World Records certifies Hoffner posthumously as the world's oldest skydiver, but he expects that will take some time.

Dr Shyamrao Wakode, dean in-charge of the Medical College claimed that the deceased were suffering from various ailments including snake bites, arsenic and phosphorus poisoning.

"Around 12 children died in the last 24 hours...12 adults also died due to various ailments (snake bites, arsenic and phosphorus poisoning etc.). Due to transfers of various staff, there was some difficulty for us...We were supposed to buy medicines from the Haffkine Institute but that also didn't happen....Also, patients come from far off to this hospital and there were many patients whose sanctioned budget also got disturbed..." he said.

Former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan, who hails from Nanded, said that besides these deaths, another 70 patients who were referred to the hospital from other private hospitals in Nanded district are 'critical'.

"Around 24 people's death has been reported at the Dr Shankarrao Chavan Medical College and Hospital and therefore I have come here and met the Dean. The situation is concerning and serious. The government should take this up and provide immediate help...Around 70 other people are critical. Replacement of a lot of nurses who were transferred has not been given,” Chavan told ANI news agency.

Later, he wrote on X, "Death toll continues in Nanded. 7 more patients unfortunately died in Government Medical College Hospital since yesterday. 4 children are also included in the dead. The state government should determine the responsibility."&nbsp;

The incident occurred in the afternoon on Sunday (Sept 24) in Pasir Ris Industrial Drive 1, when a steel stand that was supporting a cable drum gave way, the Ministry of Manpower said on Tuesday.

A cable drum is a round, cylindrical object used to carry wound-up wires and cables, reported The Straits Times.

The worker was taken to the Changi General Hospital, where he died of injuries, the officials said, adding that he was employed by Alliance E&amp;C.

Hong Hock Global, a construction and roadworks company occupying the site, has been ordered to stop all cable-laying work there.

"As a general safety measure, the cable drum and its supporting structure must be stable and secured during cabling works," the ministry said, adding that it is investigating the accident.

There have been at least 19 work-related deaths in Singapore so far in 2023.

In comparison, there were a total of 30 workplace fatalities in 2020, 37 in 2021 and 46 in 2022.

Senior Minister of State for Manpower Zaqy Mohamad said the maximum fine for breaches of certain workplace safety and health laws that could result in death or serious injury will be raised from SGD20,000 to SGD50,000 to further improve deterrence.&nbsp;

Chair of the Commission of Inquiry on Ukraine Erik Mose, speaking to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, said that his team had "collected further evidence indicating that the use of torture by Russian armed forces in areas under their control has been widespread and systematic".

The commission of Mose visited parts of Ukraine, which were held formerly by Russian forces, like Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions. It discovered that they committed torture mainly in detention centres which were operated by the Russian authorities.&nbsp;

Previously, the commission said that the violations committed by Russian forces in Ukraine, which include the use of torture, may include crimes against humanity.

Russia has denied targeting civilians in Ukraine and committing atrocities on them. Russia was given a chance at the council hearing to respond to the allegations, however, no Russian representative attended it.&nbsp;

A probe has been launched against a Seattle cop after bodycam footage showed him joking and laughing over the death of an Indian-origin woman who was killed by a police car in January this year.

In the clip that was released on Monday (Sept 11), officer Daniel Auderer can be heard joking that the student, Jaahnavi Kandula, had “limited value” and the city should “just write a check".

“She is dead,” Auderer says before bursting out laughing. “No, it’s a regular person,” he says, referring to Kandula, according to New York Post.

“Yeah, just write a check. 11,000 dollars. She was 26 anyway,” he said, misstating the victim’s age. “She had limited value.”

The video was released by the Seattle police department “in the interest of transparency”.

Kandula, a native of Andhra Pradesh, was struck and killed by Officer Kevin Dave, a colleague of Auderer, on January 23.

Auderer, who serves as the Seattle Police Guild’s vice president, further claims that he did not believe a criminal investigation was being conducted.

“I mean, he was going 50 mph. That’s not out of control. That’s not reckless for a trained driver,” Auderer said.

But a report released in June revealed that Dave was in fact driving 74 mph in a 25-mph zone while responding to a different “high-priority” call, local news outlet KIRO 7 reported.

The Seattle Community Police Commission (CPC) condemned the incident after the video was released, calling the conversation between Auderer and his colleague, "heartbreaking and shockingly insensitive."

''The people of Seattle deserve better from a police department that is charged with fostering trust with the community and ensuring public safety,'' the CPC said in a statement.

Meanwhile, the Seattle police department has said that the matter is being probed by the Police Accountability Office, and that it won’t make any statement until the probe concludes.

Jaahnavi arrived in Seattle in 2021 to receive a master’s degree, and was pursuing a Master of Science in Information Systems at the College of Engineering. She was set to graduate this December.

The police patrol, which was being driven at top speed, ran over her at the intersection of Dexter Avenue North and Thomas Street, Fox13 Seattle reported.

She was taken to Harborview Medical Center where she succumbed to the&nbsp;injuries sustained in the accident.
